Instructor Alkire is very patient and polite, and he is good at grammar and lecture skills. Many native and ESL students like him. For example, his lecture is very clear and easy to understand. He lets the students understand their grammar problems

Mr. Alkire is the coolest teacher I've run into in this miserable school. His class discussions are interesting and keeps everyone involved. His assignments were easy and the books he assigned were current and not boring. Take his class it's pretty easy and so is he on the eyes! =)

Mr. Alkire is a teacher that should be cloned because he is the complete package. His class is interesting and a very organized teacher. He's dedicated, always emailing his students to keep them updated of lectures and assignments. Nobody fails his class because he is super kind! Take him and satisfaction is guaranteed. Oh, and he is HOT!!!

I can say that if you take his class you wouldn't regrade it. We had such a fun in his class that if he teaches Eng01b, then we could have take his class again. The discussion part is great,although sometime it can be boring too.He is very approachable teacher and has tremendous patience.

Very good teacher. One of the best I've had so far at SJCC. English is always challenging but he explains very what he's expecting in our assignment. Responds to emails very quickly so he is approachable. He makes learning fun!

Great teacher! learned alot from him. He is very calm and nice. Helps students alot when asked questions and speaks crystal clear. He is by far THE BEST ENGLISH TEACHER in the department. The best English teacher in San Jose City College! Very nice and kind with student. Gives quizs and three essays on the book. His classes are always full, so register early! Highly recommended to everyone who needs a good grade in English and wants to learn alot.

Took him Spring of 2010. Best English teacher in City College! He gives wonderful comments, returns papers promptly, and always smiles when answering questions! He assigns 3 essays on 3 different books, and quizzes on material, and research paper. Easy A and you learn a lot. Register ASAP, his classes fill fast and now you know why!

He's an easy teacher and very nice too. You will require to read The Godfather and In Cold Blood and write essays about it. It was super hard. If you're an essay person then u'll pass. If not, I recommend you take another teacher. You will need to do a research paper. Anyways he quires to write good essays in order to pass the class

pretty easy class. just go to class and read the books he assigns. quizzes are on books with a few in class essays and research paper. take for a fairly easy A. Alkire is a nice guy too so it makes the class much better too.

Fantastic professor! Took him over Summmer, and although it was fast-paced, it wasn't too unbearable. Loved his comments and enjoyed coming to class everyday - what more can you ask for in a teacher? He is very kind and cares about his students - thank you professor Alkire for making English so enjoyable! :)

Only three people got an A, understand early on what his wants, because if not he wont pass you. He would give me C's for my essays and on the midterm when someone else graded it I got an A-, was not happen with my grade. I got a B and I wanted to keep my 4.) status, other than that he is a nice teacher, just wished he didn't grade so harsh.

He's extremely nice! If you ever need help all you have to do is email & he'll get back to you ASAP. You'll read 3 books, which are really interesting, one research paper, 3 essays on the books, midterm, and final. I didn't think his grading was too hard, but the quizzes do require you to remember names >: (. Overall great teacher!

I wish I would have never taken him for ENG1A. While he is "nice" (as long as you talk to him f2f) he can be rude and insensitive w/his notes and emails, i.e. when he doesn't have to look you in the eye. FYI, for fall '10 only 2 people got A's, and he failed 8 of us out of 30.

This is a great teacher! He assigned very interesting books, but I guess for a lazy(stupid) person it'll be too much reading. He has discussion almost every single class,which I really like. If you deeply understand the books and if you can think you would easily pass this class. You need to write 5 essays and do a research paper. I recommend him!!

Great teacher!! He is the nicest teacher and so willing to help! He doesn't grade the essays hard but you probably should read the books he gives because then there is a quiz. Great teacher, and very helpful. Not a hard class if you don't mind English to start with.

The only homework is reading. You read three books. The Godfather, In Cold Blood, and Valley of the dolls and each class you will take a quiz on your readings. The quizes are super easy. After each book, you will write a 2.5-3 page essay. There is a midtern essay, a final essay and then you have a research paper. I LOVED this teacher. Take him.

sweet teacher. My only concern is that you don't learn anything. If you are not experienced with writing essays than do not take him. All we did was read 3 books.You have a quiz every class time. He is not very compromising with changing your grades. He is not as interested in telling you what you did wrong.I personally would not recommend him.

Good teacher. Three books as main material. Alot of quizes and essays. Gives handouts which are excellent, and once you read them they WILL help you in the class. Once you pay attention, ask questions if you need to and put in the effort needed you will do well. I did well, enjoyed his class and would recommend him.

Pretty awesome and caring teacher. Mostly read books and do a research term paper (every eng1a that I know of does this). However, most of the class was a book club meeting. Every class there was a quiz on the chapters you've read. kinda made it boring. very kind and cares very much about how you're doing in class.

Book Club - No Joke. 3 Books, must read. Essays are given with ample time to write but you must be able to work on your own. Research paper - Must do on your own. Warning: If you are not a strong writer on your own - do not take this class.

Lots of reading his selected books and writing. Instead of having you buy a textbook he hands out a binder with English hints. All English professors interpret your writing differently and may have some pet peeves. This teacher marked me down for using the word "persons" because he thought it sounds weird, yet it appears in his selected books.

Mr. Alkire is one of those teachers who gives his student an incredible and exciting experience. He is one of those instructor who i can take again and again because he makes the class interesting and fun. There's lots of scary quizzes but they don't seem to count for as much of your grade as you might think. If you struggle to remember little details in what you read this class will stress you out. He's super nice, tells good stories, and has good discussions but I can't say I learned anything in his class, nor did it improve my writing skills.

Took Eng 1A summer class. Read 3 interesting books & took daily quizzes on the reading. At the end of each book, we wrote an essay based on the book. One research paper due at the end of semester. It is a lot of work, but Mr. Alkire is very helpful, nice and patient. If you're a slacker you won't pass! If you put in the work you will learn a lot!

Mr. Alkire is great, he is helpful and patient. He gives interesting books to read, some are a little bit long but he gives the audios which is very helpful if you're eyes just get tired. the quizzes are easy if you just read the books and the papers are short. Interesting discussions, I recommend him for English 92, he's good.

I took his English 1A class 2 semester ago. I have to drop his class in the end. There was a lot of reading in his class. I stressed out and gave up :(. Anyway, he is a really nice person. Only take him if you want to read some cool books (probably one of the best book that I have ever read) and can remember every single detail once you read them.

One of the best English teachers that I have ever had! Mr. Alkire gave us a lot of work, however, his classes were always so interesting. He is really nice, helpful, and tells amazing stories. If he taught English 1C I would definitely enroll! If you are a slacker you definitely won't pass!

Professor Scott Alkire is respectable, knowledgeable and nice, he helps you improve your writing since all essays he gives many good feedbacks, exact instructions on how to write an essay. He makes English interesting with good books. His lectures are great, funny, helpful and interesting to listen to. The best English teacher. Highly recommended.

I definitely recommend his class to everyone who needs an easy english 1A class. His work is really easy and straight forward, essay are pretty simple and he doesn't ask for too much information. 10/10 recommend this class!

Professor Alkire is a really tough grader in my opinion! He is a great and caring professor though. We read three books in class, but the amount of ambiguous questions he asks off the reading for the quizzes are tricky and not all straight forward. You have to ask a LOT of questions in and out of class for the grades you want.

Took this course online and was fairly easy to understand and complete assignments with no issues. Some of the course reading is actually interesting and not boring. Essays aren't difficult and pretty easy. He also replies fairly quickly and is happy to answer any questions on the material. Overall I would recommend this professor.

Professor Alkire is a very nice and relaxed instructor. He can be very soft spoken and truly caring for the students and their grades. For ENG001A it's mainly reading a few books and taking weekly quizzes on what you have read. So it's best to keep up with your reading. Cool life stories will be provided as well. Have Fun!

I found the books valuable for understanding how to deal with people in business as well as enjoyed reading the Good-father. Also think that the practical writing assignments are not only useful but great for learning how to write in a very professional manner for business. Scott is by far the nicest Professor I have ever taken, and truly inspirational. He made the classroom feel like a community where we are a big family. I have never had a class where every single person interacted and felt comfortable before Scott. He is like a big uncle to you. His class are tough to do well but easy to pass

He is a great teacher with great books to read during the course. Testing is heavy, 10pt quiz every class based off novel. Essay reports after each novel. Final exams were very easy if you pay attention to the material. He is always there to help you become a great writer! I would take this course again, even though theres tons of reading.

He says all essays must be handwritten in class. First test class average was 6/20. He does those kind of tests where you have to match them so if you get one wrong you get multiple wrong.

Wow. this is the worst professor I have ever had. He's doesn't help students and too much quizzes in person. He makes too much paper with 8,000 word count all over the page. He forced us to use different book and papers on the assignment for the last minute. He wants us to write 50 pages of essay by making 10,000 or more word count.

This course became increasingly difficult to manage toward the end of the semester. Daily quizzes were assigned with little notice and minimal connection to in-class discussions. Limited explanation of the readings, whole thing felt self-directed without proper guidance. would not recommend this class to students who value proper direction.

I had to drop this class because I had to save it for next semester but I'm kinda glad I had to. I remember lots of reading like every day and quizzes like everyday. I remember reading an interesting book though. He's cool and okay too it was just definitely a lot. Quizzes were somewhat challenging. He even said he was quiz-based!!
