Very helpful, nice, easy going, easy to talk to and will try his best to help you pass. His assign book and short storys are interesting, so I read them all. Keep in mind I hate to read!!! So if you want to pass take this class. I recommend you to take him. He's an A+++ teacher, I would take him again if he would teach Eng 1A or 1B.

Easy class, if you stinked at writing before..you will be a better writer if you take this class. Do read "The Godfather" but the readings in the book are not important. Pay attention to his writing techniques, they will help. Barely any homework after the first month. He is super cool and an extremely understanding human being.

The first day he had everyone fill out a questionnaire so that he could pair students up with similar personalities together so that our class would get to know each other better. His purpose is to help students understand the material. No homework except you must read two books, which were enjoyable.

Very easy class. Limited number of absences you can have, I suggest you take advantage of it and use it on days when you don't feel like going to his class since it's so easy, and sometimes his lectures are boring. As the other reviewers say, he is very soft spoken, almost fragile actually! If you want an easy class, Alkire's the way to go!

Take this class, the only way to fail this class is by not showing up and not reading the assignments. You will need to read the assigned books and get 70% average to pass and have a good portfolio but he choses really interesting books (The Godfather and In Cold Blood) and you have 3 essays, its' hard to fail

He is a great teacher! You can tell he really enjoys what he does. The books he has us read are very interesting. (In Cold Blood, The Godfather, and Valley of the Dolls). He has quizzes on the books and a couple of in class essays. Only hw was the reading and one research paper. If you had a bad grade on essays at first he can help you improve.

He is a very kind and polite gentleman who will gladly hear and answer questions. Just make sure to attend class for the daily quizzes. Oh and don't read late at night because the In Cold Blood can get to be a dry read.

I'm very sorry for the person who wrote the comment below. I guess that person is not doing well in the class because he or she does not have a solid foundation in English grammar and vocabulary. However, claiming his or her failure on the other is not a good behavior. If he or she could not handle too many classes, he or she should not do so.

Nicest professor ever, he genuinely cares about his students. The syllabus is in his course reader which is cheap, along with the other required texts. Yes this is a reading and writing class so be prepared to do so, and if you do the assigned homework and show up for class an A+ is attainable!

Hands down one of the kindest and best professors I've had at SJSU. All you have to do is read the books assigned and do the assignments. Only 2 books were assigned and most of them were read in class. Very easy going, workload is not hard at all, will help you if you need it and ask for it. Put the slightest bit of effort and you will get an A EZ

You read weekly and answer quizzes on the book. Assigns 3 throughout the semester, all easy, all meant to learn aspects of business in a not-so-typical way. First book was The Godfather, which was great. Otherwise youll do typical business workshop writing assignments, a few minor ones and a couple larger 1500 word ones later. Easy!

Great professor! He always answers my emails and provides lots of helpful feedback. Even though it's an online class, he invites all students to meet with him in person for additional feedback from him to improve their writing. If you put enough effort and time into this class, you will learn a lot and improve your writing skills (and easy A)

Honestly the nicest professor I've had at SJSU (I transferred here from a CC). He assigns books to read (3 books) which were all very good and beneficial, quizzes on the readings. Pretty simple quizzes if you read, but can be difficult if you didn't. 3 essays and the final (not a hard grader at all). Overall great and super nice professor.

Daily reading quizzes that aren't too difficult at all just gotta read the material. Professor Alkire is super responsive to students and is always open to feedback. Laidback, easy class if you don't mind taking a bunch of quizzes. Final was a written paper that also wasn't too difficult.

Three selected books for this class are The Godfather, Mark My Words, and HBR Guide to Better Business Writing. They are great books. However, the reading assignments were a bit challenging if you want to get all the questions right all the time. You may need to read the assigned chapters more than once and pay attention to specific details.

He's always been so helpful. Very responsive. He answered all the questions in class and via email. A lot of homework but totally doable. I feel he taught us a lot besides just English. There were a lot of great lessons. His lectures are also great. Straight to the points and informative.

Mr.Alkire was very kind and accessible outside of class to clear any doubts regarding essays and improving writing skills. The essay topics were very interesting. We read "A History of Knowledge" which was very interesting as its a great book about critical thinking. He provided a helpful study guide for the class. Highly recommended!

I took online class, never got full score, the professor is super sweet! :D Reads writing carefully, extensive comments, grades in depth. Deadlines differ for each assignment. 2 Writings >1500 words & 3 Essays ~400 words. Final: essay >750 words OR multiple-choice exam on 5 readings. Students can pick up the physically marked copies for review.

There is a Discipline Investigation where you interview someone in your desired career field to learn about an industry and practice networking skills. There is a presentation at the end to reflect on the takeaways and insights you gained from the person you interviewed. It is a very beneficial project with a significant weight in the gradebook.

You need to keep up with the readings.Class is straightforward with the syllabus.If you do all your assignments you should be in good hands.

Professor Alkire is caring and sharing good practical videos and books to students. As English is my second language, I enjoyed his class because I learned a lot vocabularies through reading books. I also learned critical reading and writing through his LLD 100WB. I got an A- and recommend students to take his class.

I am still taking his class. I would say the work load is not bad at all. Very manageable so far; he allows homework extension for Chinese/Lunar New Year (Crucial person issue). He does read your paper and give feedback.

Professor Alkire's LLD100WB class is manageable with his acceptance of late work. He provides helpful feedback on essays and uses AI to grade papers, though scoring can be harsh. Unstuck AI proved a useful study tool alongside the required readings.

I enjoyed taking LLD100WB with professor Alkire. He always had interesting things to discuss during class and the readings were fairly interesting. He's easily accessible outside class and gives good feedback. Only thing I did not care for was his use of AI to grade papers. AI tends to give too harsh and nit-picky feedback.

Took this course fully online and the professor was very nice! The course work is not hard and the course load was very light, it mainly consisted of 800 word essays. He is tough grader and marks points off for small errors such as misspelling, punctuation errors, etc so make sure to double check your work and follow the prompts throughly!

We spent the semester waiting for the next assignment to be posted, as he didn't include them on the syllabus. He is a strict grader and will mark you off for the smallest spelling or grammatical errors. I'm pretty sure he uses AI to grade our papers, so that is probably why he's so strict. Although he does offer makeup essays which are helpful.

Pretty chill and lenient about turning things a little later. His grading criteria for essays are clear, if you follow the structure you're fine. HOWEVER, super nit picky about small things even if they aren't reoccurring. Don't take him if you have other options imo

I enjoyed my time with professor alkire and was super happy with taking his class in the fall. Extremely kind and very interesting class discussions that made me want to show up to class. He does a makeup day for those who miss classes as well. The hardest thing was he's very picky about grading so follow the rubric to a T.

Easy to approach. Took his online 100wb class and there's around 1-2 essay each month. However, he does not require you to write long essay, the essay is mostly 700 require word and 1-2 essay has a 1700 word requirement. The topic is also not too hard, as long as you put in some effort, you should be fine.
