AWFUL prof
honest down to earth and will help when approached
the guy talked to himself at the front of the class...
Talks very fast.
power trip is alli can say
Very unstructured, distracted, unclear, boring, unprepared, although the class material might be interesting to some. If you want to take a nap and get a D, take it with Allen! Yey!
Ok, so this class is not that hard, but.... His teaching method was absolutley horrible. His is disorganized, unprepaired, lazy. Mind you he is a very nice person, but how did he get a PhD?
while the class is somewhat interesting if you like psych, he lectures straight from the text, so if you like to read, you don't need to come to class
Great prof--very helpful. Course was well structured.
because he wrote the book there was no more clarity than the book
Scott is often a little hard to understand, and his class is challenging. He puts in a real honest effort though and is a good prof. Allan=cognition(more interesting) Tata=perceptual systems >>for cognition and perception
boring
He is a great prof, NOT AT ALL hard to understand, and very eager to clarify any misunderstandings. If you are willing to pay attention and put in at least a little bit of thought his class will be worth it.
This class was so boring I wanted to jab my eye out with my pen! This class has potential for some good lectures. Especially with the subliminal messages and visual illusions.
Dr. Allen has the quirkiest sense of humour I've ever seen in a prof before. You almost miss his jokes because he slips them in without you noticing. Some of the material is horrendously boring, but the stuff that is interesting, Dr. Allen makes REALLY interesting. Exams need a lot of studying effort to get the grade, but they're not impossible.
Egotistical jerk
This class was terrible. The lectures were boring and he spent to much time rambling than on the actual hard statistics. The textbook was aweful and there arent answers to the questions so you dont know if your doing them right. DO NOT take this class with Allen or Vokey.
tried very hard to keep things interesting and was very helpful...not saying they were interesting but he tried hard
Not consistent and if you ever taken another stats class forgett everythingyou have learnt because he is in hiw own world with bull**** answers
Dr. Allen expects a lot from his students. It is very difficult to get an A, but when you do get one at least you feel like you deserve it because you worked so damned hard for it. Scared to take Stats from him though. Overall, a decent prof who demands academic excellence.
He explains things in a way that even a non-mathematical person can understand. His lectures were not that interesting...but when is stats ever interesting. Take home tests give you the opportunity to be able to learn the stuff without extreem stress. Fair class, if you work you'll get the grade you want.
Great prof. He usually explains things well. Lectures are boring but he does try to make them as interesting as the material would allow. You recieve take home midterms and the final is open book. It is an easy class to get an A in if you pay attention in class.
Scott is a great prof. Very smart and funny guy, but subtle about it. Very nice, and helpful if you care enough to ask.
I love how Dr. Allen actually wants students to succeed. He tells you exactly what will be on the tests, spreads out assigments nicely and is super approachable. I've had some teachers who get mad when the class av is too high..he was totally fine with it. If you are willing to put a bit of work into his classes you will do just fine!
Dr. Allen explains material well, but when i approached him one on one he was less than helpful, I found him to be quite rude and instead of answering my question, reprimanding me for not asking during "class time". I also found some of the information he was lecturing in class was incorrect, overgeneralized, and at times quite ignorant.
I really like scott allen, he is funny and his class can be interesting if you actually pay attention. If not, then i guarantee you will be bored. But this class definitely makes you think.
Dr. Allen is an amazing prof! He wants his students to succeed. And he is always willing to help during his office hours. I've heard some bad things about him before, but I personally enjoyed having him as a prof. :)
Amazing professor. Made stats fun and easy to get a good mark.
I tried taking this course with another prof and dropped it before the first midterm because I knew I would fail. Frankly, I was terrified to take it again. I'm terrible at math and thought I would still do horrible, but I ended up with an A+. Scott's exams make it easy for the mathematically inept to do just as well as those who excel in math.
This class material is very boring. Scott Allen doesn't do slides, and sometimes he is even hard to hear because he doens't usually wear a microphone. Seems like a really nice guy just doens't bring anything to boring subject matter. Tests set up in a tricky true/false format.
Class lectures with Scott are so boring. He "tries" to show examples and whatnot but likely due to his voice, he still comes across as painfully boring. Also, he only required two tests during the semester, each worth 50%... Luckily all you really have to do is read the textbook.
Good Stuff:tries to explain things well in class, uses one class for questions and answers before each exam, relatively easy to approach, gave 5% extra for participating in research. BAD STUFF: really boring guy to listen to, very busy outside of the class, tricky true/false question. He tests your understanding more than anything else.
Allen is laid-back and interesting prof. I enjoyed the couple lectures he presented and his questions on the exam were pretty straight forward from his lecture and notes. I really enjoyed his Lepton example..
Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory. I found much of his material was pulled from the book rather than lectures. He's interesting however while he does so he doesn't wear a microphone or use slides... so it can be hard to pay attention. He's there for his students and will do anything he can to help them understand the material. Good prof!
Brilliant, high quality prof!
This course was not enjoyable. Only 2 tests at 50% each and they are comprised of misleading true/false questions. No slides or powerpoints posted. When I emailed the prof because I missed an A by literally 0.03% he never emailed me back and was rude in person. The entirety of this class is based on the coursepack so the scope is very limited.
He's a great guy, I'd love to go for a beer with him. Much of the material is perceptual illusions, so go to class with a strong stomach and lots of Tylenol / Advil. This class especially, you only get out of it what you put in it. Sit front row and talk. Tests were stupid though. I can't defend that, and no curving. I was 0.27% off an A- but no.
I love Allen. He is funny, engaging and helpful. I've taken 2 classes with him and definitely consider him my favorite prof at uofl. Easy tests, lots of laughs and nooo stress. take his class!
I really liked Allen as a professor. His lectures are interesting and engaging and his midterm's/final are a breeze. Go to class and this class is an easy A!
LOVE ALLEN! Methods and Stats was actually enjoyable because of him. My goal is to have a class with him every semester. Fair/easy tests if you attend class. He also takes your grades seriously and makes it easy for anyone to get a good grade. Solid prof. Pretty cute too ;)
Horrible prof. The guest speakers are pretty good but the exams are absolutely ridiculous. "multiple guess" style exams... whatever that means... with misleading information and asking about such specific useless information. Avoid if you can.
I took a number of classes with Dr. Allen, including a 4000 level independent study. He has high standards, but gives you the skills to meet those standards if you are willing to put in the effort. He really knows his stuff and is just a nice guy in general. I would recommend him for any psyc class! If you really listen to him, you'll be fine!
Scott is a great prof because he works hard to make the material interesting. His tests were awesome; His sense of humour keeps you going to even early classes. You have to study hard, but it's worth it.
only willing to help students during class time. If he even responds to your email to make an appt because you dont understand the material he makes you feel stupid, repeating the same thing he already said as if you cant hear correctly. He is not willing to remark work and will dock grades if you try and use another student as a reference.
Good course all together. He made the night class quite bearable, and take home midterms and open book tests were wonderful! Not a stressful class if you have a heavy course load!
He made methods and statistics an interesting and fair class. The midterms were take home and the final was open book. The class also made statistics interesting and showed how it can be applied.
Make sure if you take this class, take a basic stats class first to help understand the basic concepts. Scott made the lectures as interesting as possible but the material is dry. Found this class to be challenging despite it being take home midterms and open book final. Although I did learn quite a lot and I read medical articles differently.
I was surprised that Allen got poor reviews, I've found him to be a FANTASTIC prof so far, he's great at explaining the formulas and tries really hard to make class engaging. He's a great guy! I'm still in the middle of my semester so I haven't finished the class yet, but I have left every class thinking "I really should rate that guy he's great!"
Class had a different lecturer each day, some were very good while others were quite boring. The part of the class I disliked were the ambiguous tests. I did very well in the course but the testing could have been much more straightforward to test actual knowledge.
The class is easy if you can teach yourself and find other means for a textbook. The textbook he wrote is the one he uses and if you dont understand him, you wont understand the text. I used an alternate text, taught myself and received an A+. He is unapproachable and arrogant. Not happy when asked questions and does a pitiful job of explaining.
They call Statistics Sadistics for one reason and this guy is it. Figure things out on your own by looking through the text and reading it with a fine tooth comb. His explanations won't help, and he really does come off as not very helpful.
Write down everything he says.
There is a diff prof every class and it SUCKED! I hated this class so much because half the time the profs were either boring or just bad at teaching. There is no guidance for exams and the questions are worded really strange. If you show up and skim the chapter you'll do fine though. It's just painful...
Not very good. Mumbles and hard to hear. Notes are posted online so attending class is a waste of time. But it is an easy class. Do NOT buy the textbook.
Really great prof! Class material isn't all that interesting, but if you read his notes he posts online it's an easy A. As for the mumbling comments earlier, just sit closer to the front and you will be fine!
This is the most boring class I have ever taken. In this class, i have learned to sleep with my eyes open. it is terrible!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Very rude person.
He is not helpful at all
60% students dropped this class
Easy class. 3 exams only and each are worth a third of your mark and are all open book. Scott does a good job making a stats class interesting, if you attend class and do the homework it's easy to succeed in the class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PERSON
Make super smart friends in this class otherwise you're screwed. Or I would've been. He tries, but he's not too great at getting the point across. Anyways just go to class and take good notes because they come in handy on the take home midterms.
He as a person I'm sure would be a good teacher. Unfortunately, I took Statistics with him so I feel my opinion may be biased. This was the most brutal class I have EVER taken (I'm now in my 4th year). I don't know if a different instructor would have made this class easier.. but damn, if you gotta take this class.. good luck. All I gotta say.
I did not enjoy his class at all, maybe it's because I hate anything that involves calculation. He does not really explain anything. He jumps from one topic to the other. I would not encourage anyone to take this class with him.
He does not do a very good job explaining topics. This class is awful and he definitely does not help.
WORST PROF EVER FOR THIS CLASS. He is very unhelpful when you go to him for help, and he makes you feel bad about needing help with the way he responds to questions. He also messed up the grade weight for the final Spring semester, which caused me to get an F instead of the C I would have obtained had he weighted the exam properly. Do NOT recommend
This is a pretty interesting class. As long as you sit up front to hear better have your textbook which is a course pack this year don''t bother taking a note book. Everything you need is in the textbook. He works verbatim out of said book. As long as you pay attention to the readings and the lecture its fairly simple material. He tries.
Scott Allen is by far one of the greatest. Lectures are a little dry but Tests are well worded and easy enough if you put in a decent amount of effort. Would recommend him to anyone and everyone. Overall great guy
Good prof. He explains things really well and is an overall nice guy. One problem I have with him is his harsh grading style. You really have to work hard to get an ok mark in his class.
I found this a very manageable course to take. He wrote the textbook himself and it was easy and enjoyable to read. He goes over the textbook in class, so you can add notes as you go along. The test is multiple choice, no written portion. No papers or assignments. Study the textbook and there should be no surprises come exam time.
He is basically always willing to help. He will find a way to explain something differently if the class doesnt understand. Has a great sense of humour. Overall a great prof.
One of the WORST profs I've encountered here. Extremely monotone, boring, and unclear when teaching material. Skirts around questions or gives a completely unrelated answer. Passing is hard regardless of if you attend class or not. You'll eventually have to start teaching yourself everything, because he's that incomprehensible. Avoid if possible.
HORRIBLE prof to take this class with. He's horrible at giving you help; even though he says ask him for clarification whenever you need it. Even then, he passes it off to the TAs instead of doing it himself a majority of the time. Only benefit was take home, open book tests (MINUS the final). Avoid taking this course with him at ALL costs.
This prof is a really nice person, but has no idea how to teach. His lectures are dull and monotone. Also I found when I went to him for help he didn't really help me all that much. If you go to his classes and pay attention you always get the material you need.
He's a real tough grader. He can also be kind of inconsiderate. Wouldn't really recommend taking a class with him.
Actually a pretty good professor. Will actually respond to your e-mails and will try to help you. Class is interesting and quite funny but is also challenging. Class consists of two take home midterms and an open book final. Basically go to class, write clear notes and you won't have a problem. Definitely improved from previous comments! :)
Gives little help; we asked for clarity and got little in return. Kind of rude sometimes. Textbook and lectures aren't clear at all; his lectures are all over the place and he rambles a lot, making it very hard to understand or keep up with what is happening. I didn't enjoy his class at all.
Lectures are extremely boring and difficult to sit there. Take home midterms are nice but he is a hard marker and very precise. I did not appreciate his unsolicited opinion on very controversial topics that affect everyone's life (i.e: cancer.) If you disagree with him you are probably wrong, this is the mentality he has.
Bar none the worst professor I have experienced at U of L. Lectures were incredibly boring, dry, and unstructured. He is terrible at explaining concepts and problems. Would frequently get lost in his lectures resulting in him staring at the white board for minutes at a time. Easy A, but not worth putting up with this professor.
Made the class hard. On tests if it's not what he wants, you will not pass.
Amazing, informative, actually quite funny. Would love to have again !
Dr. Allen is an extremely smart man and is really nice. Incredibly interesting material and really makes you think. The text is cheap and easy to read, it's more like an interesting novel. There is a term paper that he lets you do by steps to break it down and 2 exams that are short answer that he helps you go over. Awesome class!
Super boring, monotoned, uninteresting. But great course if he didn't teach it.
Lectures are super long and sometimes boring, it's interesting material though. Exams are pretty easy as long as you do the readings and go to class.
Dr. Allen is a good prof, he attempts to make the material interesting, although it can be pretty dry at times. He is very helpful. The only complaint I have is that he mumbles a lot and doesn't speak very clear.
Scott is a great prof! The only issue sometimes was his mumbling, even when I sat in the front row. Some lectures are dry but not an extreme amount (every class will have dry lectures). The text is awesome, super cheap, written by him specifically for the class. Wish he would put everything he taught in it though. Last chapter was hard.
boring lecturer and he mumbles so you cannot hear him speak
Great class & great prof! Most of the material was easy enough to understand in class & if it wasn't, the textbook (written by him) clarified things. He made sure to give a heads up as to exam material/made the most of review classes. My only complaint is similar to other students: he does mumble. Other than that, I highly recommend his classes!
I don't know why everyone is hating on Dr Allen, man he is brilliant! His exams are very fair and easy if you bother to actually read his textbook which he wrote himself and therefore you don't need anything else. I enjoy taking this class with Dr Allen He is truly amazing Altough I can't help but think that he looks like a penguin in his suits
I took this thinking it would be a somewhat easy science GLER, but ended up being my least favourite class. I stopped going because I couldn't understand what he was saying, which made me tune out. I stayed in the class, because the textbook is written by him (which has an annoying amount of grammatical errors). I would not recommend taking it.
He does his best to make relatively dry material interesting in his lectures! His class isn't hard, if you just read and understand the textbook it's an easy A. You probably won't even have to attend class to do well if you read his textbook.
Your whole mark are from tests.
Second time taking a course with Professor Allen. A lot of reading required. Vokey and Allen did this course together. They both make you work for your grade. Attending class helped me better understand the readings and computer program (Rmarkdown). There was a title competition every week (night class) that was a fun touch. I did learn a lot.
Scott's an... interesting marker to say the least. He knows his material well, but is a dry lecturer and doesn't make an effort to engage students. He does offer bonus credits, so DO THEM. He's also very opinionated in regards to his marking style. 3 take home six question tests, given a week to do each. I'd take his classes again, but not this one
The class was okay, I think he could easily be a great professor if he just talked with a little more life in his voice and brought more energy to class.
Professor Allen is just okay. There are two midterms and one final. All of the material comes straight from the textbook. Going to class is useless if you read the text. He doesnt explain concepts well and his textbook is poorly written. All that being said, if you are a good student, you will do well in his classs.
Dr Allen is awesome! I don't understand why everyone is hating. Yes, 2030 can be hard, but what do expect? Put in a little effort! If you attend class and take notes you will be fine. He wrote the textbooks for his classes and they are very helpful if you take the time to look at them. He is very knowledgeable and there to help when you need it!
So incredibly passionate about what he does, it's great!!
Probably one of the best psych profs at the U of L. Though some lectures were boring, notes taken helped for the 3 take home exams. He is friendly, and replies to emails quick. However, I have taken a few stats courses, and his teaching of simple concepts are ridiculous. He made simple concepts complicated and confusing.
If you go to class and pay attention this is an easy course. Three take home tests which you're allowed to do basically anything to get the answers for besides copy someone else's work. Textbook is provided free online. Some lectures were a little bland but usually it was fairly interesting.
Dr. Allen really knows his stuff! The problem is, that he speaks to, and lectures to you like you also do. I recommend getting a tutor for this class (helped me amazingly) as I learned absolutely nothing from his classes. This is one of those classes that everything will go right over your head. Great and friendly guy though!
Scott really makes the topics interesting and I always looked forward to his classes. There are a lot of things said in lectures that are important in understanding the material in the book. He is hilarious, and for me he made the classes very enjoyable.
Easiest class I've ever taken. Spends several days going over simple concepts that can be learned in 5 minutes of study. Textbook for the entire lecture can be read in 3 hours and simply reading the textbook is enough to get an easy A+. Confuses himself on concepts and constantly repeats himself, and class is extremely boring.
Considering i am good at math and psych, I figured a psychology based stats class would rock my socks off. All he did was mumble, and use crazy methods to teach simple concepts. It was increasingly difficult to drag myself to class, and it was never clear to me what he wanted when tests came around. At least they are take home exams.
Dr. Allen is a nice person but he should not be a professor. Genuinely doesn't know what he's talking about and makes concepts that should be simple extremely difficult. He gets corrected by students at least 5 times a class. Just terrible. Avoid if you can.
I took this class a few years ago and found it applicable to the family life that I was in at the time. Very interesting and clear concepts to grasp, especially if you are interested. The class was not difficult and lectures were easy to understand. I still stop by his office to talk about other academic stuff and he always gives direct input!
For the most part he just reads straight from his textbook, so all you have to do is read over it before or in class. His tests can be worded pretty weird but they're normally just true/ false and matching. He takes a while explaining concepts but he goes into depth which may help if you don't understand.
Scott is a great prof and really wants people to understand the concepts. I enjoyed his class a lot and look forward to taking more with him. Concepts come easy to some, but not to others, which is why he emphasized a lot of topics because he seemed to want to make sure we were all on the same page.
If you want a professor who lectures from straight out of the textbook, Scott Allen is the guy for you. Hes great if your standard for learning is low, as he reads from paragraphs of the textbook that hes written, and overcomplicates concepts that shouldnt take more than a few sentences to explain. I am extremely disappointed in the class.
The exams are fairly easy to do provided you read the textbook and understand it. The lectures are pretty boring to attend, and you're probably better off just reading the textbook on your own.
Scott is a very smart prof and he knows what he talking about. Sometimes simple concepts were over-complicated in class, but his textbook helps make everything quite clear. Attendance is NOT mandatory as everything you need to know is in the text. This class is much harder than expected but if you do the readings, you will do fine. Not an easy A
Scott has been a great prof in the past, however this class was hard. He over complicated simple concepts and expected you to know every detail. His textbook is easy enough to understand, but the tests are so wordy, that even if you understood the text, you would fail. The last few chapters are hard, and the final is worth 40%! Boring lectures too
This class was a lot more difficult than expected. The material is very hard to understand and is not explained well in class. Don't expect an easy-A in this class! Final is worth 40% of our grade - luckily there is an option to receive up to 5% bonus marks in the class by participating in psych studies.
Although seems like a charismatic guy, visit his office and you will see that he is actually the most condescending person. tests are all true false which can go either way. he wrote the textbook so basically just memorize that cover to cover. I would not take this class unless mandatory. He struggles to explain basic concepts but won't admit it.
- The textbook is horribly written as it is full of grammatical errors. - He talks about stuff in class that aren't included in the textbook which will be on the tests. - His lectures are word for word from the textbook. - You are graded by 3 exams (30%, 30% & 40%). - I mean, he's the best psych prof at the uni, but he's not great.
I loved him! Sweet, super funny, fair. It was a great class
Prof Allen was great at explaining the classs topics by relating the material to real life scenarios. Sometimes the lectures were pretty boring, but as long as you took good notes you could ace the take home exams (the only form of grading)!
My 2nd class with him, I accidental took this class because when I registered I didn't pay attention to the names and didn't think his would show up again. Personality wise he is a nice person, but when it comes to email, asking question he's condescending or no reply. His textbook is a joke, makes no sense at all, he overcomplicates simple terms.
Dr. Allen is a good professor, he takes time to explain concepts, however he does tend to overcomplicate things, which in turn makes you study a lot harder for his courses. His lectures are hard to follow but if you read the textbook you will be okay! Tests are a strange layout and quite difficult!
Dr. Allen is an absolute staple in the department. He is so knowledgeable, and he makes classes funny and enjoyable. You can tell he loves what he does, and it really makes the classes interesting and enjoyable.
