if you do the readings and show up to class you will pass the class
Disorganization, arrogance, and ineptitude personified
No Comments
He is fun and has funny stories. He will explain well and there are only 4 2 page papers for the whole class. Extra credit too.
very helpful
Professor Andrews is pompous and arrogant. If you would like to take a class with a man that thinks he is always right, please take a class with this guy. Don't let the humorous exterior fool you. He is an actor playing the part of a hip professor.
Sounds like some people are bitter because they cant pass a class that is pretty clear on wha tis needed to pass. I think Andrews was a great teacher and if i had the chance I would take him again,

Provides online study questions. Relates material to today's world -- TV, movies, music, etc. Clearly likes his topic.
once you get the hang of the way he does things, it comes pretty easy. you can tell he is a super smart guy so he has a right to be a bit cocky about certain things. you have to come to class cause he gives quizes every day.
gotta do all the reading. he is looking for some mystery amazing answer on all his papers/essays that he never says in class and your grade will reflect such. lectures are good, and he is v nice and available for help but grades too hard for a 275.
P. Andrews is charming, smart, and engaging. His class was challenging and fun. Great teacher!
He puts study questions online, is VERY funny, and tells us exactly what he is looking for on tests. I loved him! But be warned: He can be a tough grader if you're not used to honors class, and you will not pass this class if you don't do all the reading.
Andrews is a good teacher with a fun sense of humor. I learned a lot in his class. However, he is a hard grader who is stingy with A's.
He is very nice and lectures are interesting. He has a great sense of humor...he is open minded...grades very hard...though very helpful...i recommend him to anyone...but you do gotta do the work..and the readings are enjoyable
w00t! Andrews gave me an A! He's funny, nice, and clear about what he wants. He tells you he's difficult. You HAVE to do the reading, you can't fake it with him. Be careful not to let your phone goes off in class. He'll answer it! Overall, I loved him.
It is easy to hate him becuase he is full of himself. But when you look at what you learned in his class at the end you will be amazed. He is really good. He knows what he is talking about. yes, he is a hard grader take him you will learn alot must read!
Tune him out and it'll be a good class
How could you learn anything if you tune him out?
He took points off for every thing he could think of but gave no meaningful help.
He is by far the worst teacher I ever had. He is full of himself, stingy with A's & does not help the person understand what he expects to see in their papers. I highly DO NOT recommend this teacher. Your garde will disappoint you.
The best professor I've come across in three years at CSUN. His literature classes are more thorough than all my other classes combined. One in particular has seriously changed my life.
Good speaker, but grades too hard...
Dr. Andrews is an awesome and very enthusiastic teacher. He knows his stuff well and he is willing to help with questions. Make sure u do the reading though. Lots of quizzes, but he gives you the questions beforehand.
I was not enthusiastic to study Native Am. Lit. but after taking the course, I was so pleased that I did. Andrews made the material interesting and relevant. He's insanely knowledgeable and surprisingly fun. You must be a competent college student to survive in his class--so stupid people stay away.
Exellent teacher who has made me a better student. I recommend this class if you're willing to read, think and be prepared enough to participate in class. He's difficult, but fair and will make you a better thinker.
Witty, Intelligent and overall enjoyable. He is extremely smart and able to relate anything back to pop culture- Is a tough grader, but is very clear and if funny. However he does like to talk alot about ****es.
Great class and Andrews helps the time go by fast. Was worried because it was a 3 hr. class but he has good stories and involves the whole class. Plus he gives out candy. Beware LOTS of reading involved but hey what do you expect in an English class 
Great Professor. Very approachable and accommodating to the needs of the students. Had 2 classes w/him and I wish I could take more. Lots of reading but it's not hard. Easy weekly quizzes if you do the reading. Lots of feed-back on papers which adds to the learning experience. Makes class fun.
professor andrews is funny, so class won't be boring. he makes the stories you read more interesting as he relates them to real life. he's also nice and helpful. and of course, incredibly smart.
Being "funny" does not make up for the ridiculous reasons he'll mark you down on papers and tests.
Seriously played with my head-does not like students who disagree with him. Vowed never to take him again. "A" students and good writers beware. Do not let him tell you that you do not know how to write. Got an A, but was disgusted with him. Loved the lit!
Very enjoyable teacher. Made the time fly by. One of the most approachable people at CSUN. Extremely helpful.
Im doing my readings for him now! The Lit is great and so are his lectures. I total treat to be taking this class. He's interesting and interested in his students. I think he's hott-even if he is a walking Dockers ad!
He is the best professor that I have taken at CSUN. He is not only very intellegent but cute in a nerdy kind of way. His classes are very entertaining and there is never a dull moment. I recomend him to all english majors. He makes you think about literature and question how you interpret it.
a good dude. kind of a tough grader, but it's hard to dislike him. drink with him if you get the chance.
Andrews is an utterly delightful professor who is a tough grader but very helpful in understanding texts. I have enjoyed every class I have taken with him, as he makes even a 3 hour class fly with his humor...and YES, if you get a chance, drink with the man!!! He loves Chili's!!!
Cool teacher, really fun, obviously enjoys teaching and helping students. Tough grader, but thats cool too- you get from the class what you put into it. Highly recommend!!
Stop reading about yourself Dr. Andrews. Go read a book or something.
Real Students take him! He is tough, but teaches will passion. Interesting class. Very funny at times. Andrews knows all there is to know about Amer. Lit so if you love Amer. Lit take his classess you will not regreat it. Who cares if he is somewhat full of himself. He has the right. Nice! Do read!
He's funny and teaches very clearly. He's a tough but fair grader. The subject matter in 312 is interesting. The femme fatales, moral ambiguity, and mise-en-scene work are all great. The papers he assigned for this class were the most enjoyable ones I did this semester. I recommend this class!
If you're interested in taking an excellent, brilliant and hysterical professor, take this class. He is truly one of the best professors ever! I learned so much about Native American wisdom and culture and Love Medicine is one of the best books I've ever read in my life.

Andrews is really sure what he wants to discuss. If you're not on board, be careful! If you don't approach all of your learning within the boundaries he's set, he can be downright rude in his responses during class, office hours, and on papers. All in all, he was knowledgable and seemed like he enjoyed most of his students, but I felt shut down.
What's up with the candy? I don't know he passes out that tupperware of caramels but it's really cool. Scott rocks! He had this grading system where you turn in journals for just 3 points and you knew how much everything you turned something in for an A. The final was turned in at Chili's over drinks! He's a lightweight and likes girly drinks.
Excellent professor, sets high standards but explains how to meet them. His classes are enjoyable and interesting. I wish I could have taken him for more but I'm done!

Not just a great teacher but opens your mind to be able to look not just at literature but life from a different perspective. Takes criticism and does not try to "****-Slap" you with his Doctorate degree. Changed my life. Thanks!!
Awesome teacher that truly cares and understands his students...
Very clear and applies lessons to modern life. Very funny!!

A lot of the teachers with poor reputations are more fair than him when it comes to grading. I came out of his class with nothing. If I learned one thing, it's that this could be the most overrated professor in the English dept.
Best professor in the department. Those complaining that he grades too hard might also complain about undies chaffing, and subsequently should switch back to diapers.
very good, fair professor. Not over-rated at all. you will walk away with a lot from this class as he makes you think! i really enjoyed this class as he also relates to the students and applies the readings to modern day life. if you want a good class, i would enroll in one of his.
Scott is one of those Professors that will leave an everlasting mark on you. His love for his field shines through. His lectures are interesting, enlightening, and stimulating. He parallels lit. to common experiences. He is a tough grader, but you will no doubt learn from his classes. I've had two. He is a cuter version of Billy Crystal.
He's a tough grader and the assignments are all essay. Midterm/final were take home as well. Very approachable & gives extra credit to help the grade. I didn't care too much for the material, but he made it interesting and the class wasn't boring. Although class is relaxed, he expects alot out of your assignments.
Don't believe the hype.
Excellent, intelligent and funny. Fairly tough grader.
dr. andrews is the most down to earth professor in the department. i am not obsessed with perfect grades like some of my peers, so if getting an A is a life or death situation for you, make sure you write your papers like a scholar. i am fortunate i got a B, the way i write my papers. but i enjoyed the class, he's an intelligent guy.
Andrews is a great professor. He is very challenging in his grading and likes a lot of participation. He is very approachable, available for questions before or after class and during his office hours. Answers emails quickly. Great teacher, but be prepared for a lot of work & assignments.
Ok, if you don't take anything out of his class, you probably weren't paying attention. Readings are fairly simple, quick. He provides study questions that really help spark in class decussion. He is very pro decussion and sometimes rants. Trys to get everyone involved. But do be warned, he has a somewhat cult like following of annoying women.
Good, but not great. I agree...don't believe the hype.
If you think clarity gets you into heaven, take this guy. GREAT for journalism or academic writing. On tests, he rewards crystal-clear writing only. You get A's if you just report the facts. His class is organized & he's reliable. Only chicks who are easily bored or have missing fathers could think he was sexy. He has eyes like the shark in "Jaws."
Ok professor...not great. Hard class.
So helpful. Very interesting, everything he says is clear and pertains to what the novels are about. Lots of popculture references. Hot in a nerdy kind of way.

Dont be taken in, he is not an EASY teacher! but he is FAIR which is just as important, he makes you think and wont hand you everything on a silver platter, you have to do the reading! There is no getting out of it, and you have to think and write about the study questions for weekly quizes.

Nice teacher, very clear. You are expected to do readings, but you learn a lot. Very funny...enjoyed going to class.

Covers a lot of material, but tries to explain it all. Exams are on material covered in class.
He rocks! True educator! Loved the class and loved the matterial we read. He will inspire you to read literature. He loves teaching and it shows. You will learn!!!! Must read all the readings and concentrate even though it might be hard because you stare at him all class session. He is one of the most coolest professors i ever had. Nice guy! cutie!
Great class! Learned a lot, read A LOT, quizzes weekly, 3 essay exams + 1 paper, not easy but rewarding when you've done well and learned something. Class is never boring. If you read, go to class, take every quiz and participate--you should pass the tests and the class.
He can be good, but do the reading or pay.
HIS LECTURES ARE INTERESTING. HE'LL CRACK JOKES ONCE IN A WHILE OR USE EXAMPLES THAT YOU CAN RELATE TO. YOU MUST DO THE READING AND TAKE GOOD NOTES IF YOU WANT TO PASS THIS CLASS.
Professor is very interesting but difficult to understand what he wants. Your essays will always be either to wordy or not wordy enough.
Omgz easiest class ever!
A very nice man. Extremely helpful. Tougher grader on papers BUT tells you what you he wants to see in your work..which helps in earning better grades with him. I have taken him twice and am taking him once more..in a class I am not even that interested in.
My absolute favorite professor I've ever had. He made me want to work harder. I never got the "A" I was looking for, but he really helped me step up my writing skills. He lets you know exactly what he's looking for in every bit of feedback he gives. His class is actually worth going to & is very interesting. I loved him.
Really cool guy. Very informative. Whether office hours or through email will do his best to explain whatever you need explained. The selected readings were entertaining as well as the lectures. As long as you write decent essays you'll get a good grade. He will mark you down for all grammar and punctuation mistakes...as he should.
I regret taking this prof. One of the hardest graders I have ever encountered. Loves to give C's B's and A's are rare. His 314 class is the worst I could go on about that class forver. In short don't take it. 355 isn't too bad minus the impossible high standards which he grades with but still it is passible. 314 on the otherhand STAY AWAY!
Easy to pass, hard to get an A. particular grader, though if you put the effort in and go to office hours you will get the A. He challanges you and is a really good teacher. Do the reading, participate, and go to office hours you will get a good grade. He had to grow on me, but in the end I liked him and felt i learned something.
Grades way too hard even with A quality papers.
He grades much too hard, he thinks a C is a perfectly good grade and explains you have to show him something new to get even a B on a paper. Also, he is pretty self absorbed. Otherwise it's not a bad class, just don't expect an A.
Great Professor! Like it was said before, you have to work to get an "A", but once you do, it is worth it. He definitely helped me improve my writing. Take this professor given the opportunity.
This class is all about interaction and sharing your own opinions. I appreciate this professor for being so open minded. There are response assignments for each book and a massive paper at the end. No exams. This class is all discussion. There's a lot of pressure on that last paper but he is very helpful and preps you for the challenge.
Very sweet man. Very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. Class time was insightful and informative. My only complaint is his unrealistic expectations for papers. There's thorough, and then there's what Prof. Andrews expects. I have received A's from notoriously more difficult professors than Andrews and I ended up with a B in his class.
If you are settling for less and choose to be lazy do not waste his time. This man will help you learn and grow, will be very honest and helpful as well.I am not the best writer yet somehow have received A's in previews classes. He has an eye for areas of improvement and makes himself available through office hours to help you grow and learn.justdoit
Dude is the bomb.com. He's freaking hilarious and his work is pretty easy. Just weekly readings and two essays. No final! He really helps you and tells you how to write an essay correctly! One of the best professors I've had. Take this class if you just wanna chill!
This teacher is so nit picky! Grades as harshly as a wild fire over dried up grass. Don't take this class unless you are able to write "perfect" essays because this teacher looks for perfection. I was very interested in this class, but now I regret ever taking it. Also, I feel this teacher is intimidating, at least towards me.
I took Native American Lit a few years ago and to this day, I am still using skills I learned in this class. He will make you work, but the work is worth the reward. I resented the low grades I was receiving on papers at the beginning of the semester, but I soon discovered that he was beyond willing to help during office hours. Excellent class!
Ok, so I have never rate anybody here but this prof is really not a fair grader. This was an elective and he expects too much from the essays he assigns, to start he is not even clear how this essays should be written, so you will know when you get back your poor grade. The material is great but it seems nearly impossible to even get an A.
I love professor Andrews! This class was pretty easy- a lot of reading, but it's all interesting! He made this class so interesting and really helped me learn a whole lot! He is hilarious, nice, and very understanding. He is a very brilliant man and definitely knows his stuff! I highly recommend this class and professor Andrews!
Excellent professor. Learned a lot. I'd take any course he teaches.
Dr. Andrews is an intelligent man with a big heart for what he teaches. The passion passes to his students. It is always a pleasure taking a class with a teacher who actually cares about the material.
This teacher is not helpful and will speak down to you if you ask questions. The material is not structured. He is a very hard grader and does not give good instructiondirection to his essays--he expects you to do all the work. He is pretentious and will proudly announce that the class average for large essays were 75%. So don't expect an A. Ever.
Professor Andrews is a fairly good professor. He grades harsh. It's hard to get an A. He is an intelligent, funny, and down to Earth person but it's sometimes hard to pinpoint exactly what he wants. No final. Two papers. Read all the assigned reading, it helps with your papers. Advice: Always ask questions no matter what, for clarity purposes.
Dr. Andrews is a highly intelligent, professional, and kind person. He encourages you to participate and challenges you. He's also very helpful and is willing to read very long papers in rough draft format. Andrews loves to learn and he loves to see other people learn. I would definitely take his class again. He's really there for his students
Dr. Andrews is an amazing teacher. He assigns interesting reading materials and is clear about what he expects from students. He assigns two essays, quite a few pop quizzes on the reading, one small partner project, and he gives opportunities for extra credit. Just make sure you show up to class and do the reading. Definitely recommend.
Such a nice and polite professor. He gives away all of the ideas for the essays that he assigns. There is no attendance. He is a little bit tough on grading but not the worst. I enjoy his sense of humor. Recommended.
Class is pretty easy as long as you do the reading. He's great at keeping you interested in the topic. He makes it fun and connects with every student. He's very clear and easy going.
This teacher is friendly and really loves story telling. He's genuine as a person, but as a teacher he's the most critical grader, and i don't say this lightly. I've recieved the worst grades i've ever recieved in my life in this class, and i've put in the time and energy he expects. Do what he asks of you and expect harsh results in the end.
It is true, he is too harsh of a grader. Expect a half or even full grade lower on his essays than you usually get in other classes. Its lame. He doesn't realize or care that this actually disincentivizes and demotivates. We are unpublished, undergrad students. Inaccurate and unrealistic. Other than that it is standard and straightforward.
I've taken his Eng 355, Eng 314, and Eng 378 classes at CSUN, and he's been a solid professor. Yes, he will grade you and your papers critically, but he frequently gives the opportunity for you to improve through constructive criticism and offering office visits. If you don't put the effort into papers, you'll take a hit. Otherwise, easy A.
Andrews is a cool person. His lectures are imbued with his charisma and passion for the course. But he seems to grade by publication standards which can be annoying. I hate writing essays under the instruction of someone who thinks there's such thing as a perfect essay. Despite his nitpicking, the assigned reading compensated for it. Great books!
He doesn't like to give out high grades! We also had pop quizzes pretty much every week so although he doesn't take attendance not going to class will definitely hurt your grade. He is otherwise a super cool guy but the class was a little on the boring side. Good luck getting through Black Elk Speaks.
Honestly, you show up, do the work, and stay on top of it and let me tell you that still would not be enough. Really disappointed because lectures do not help at all and you pretty much teach yourself.
At first I enrolled into his course with an open mind, despite what his ratings said. However, he is just an awful professor. You can try your hardest, and he will grade you based on what he feels you deserve. I truly have not learn anything from him nor his class. Sad to see he only grades based on quantity rather than quality. Disappointed.
This class was super easy and interesting. At the beginning of the year, he asked us what topics we would like to talk about and based lectures on those topics. He assigned readings but he never checked if you did them. Sometimes lectures would get a bit boring. Overall, the class was very interesting and the professor had a great sense of humor.
This professor will make you feel like you know nothing and are nothing. He openly complains about grading on his Twitter account (during a pandemic, no less, when people are lucky to have a source of income). Then he will try to lecture you about the invention of Thanksgiving. Thanks, but no thanks.
Professor Andrews is officially one of my favorites! He loves his subject matter and it's infectious. He's heavily involved in the American Indian Studies department--which I believe he's the head of--and in the American Indian community as well. He provides so much awesome information--you will learn. He's caring & intelligent. Definitely take him
The assigned books were boring. I dont understand his grading system on essays. He grades tough and I dont know what MLA format he follows that he is tough on the citing section of the paper. Lectures werent interesting either because the reading wasnt. I didnt learn anything from this class
Do not take this guy. I've never in all my years in college had any problems with any professors. Even the hardest professor's I have token I had not problem, but this professor just seems to like get a kick out of making things difficult. If you get an answer correct, he will still grade you a 0 if he feels you didn't say it properly. Worst.
Over the top lengthy assignments that were worth very few points. Extremely long readings which were meant to be "short stories." Harsh grader. I don't recommend this professor at all unless this is the only class you are taking all semester and have no job or anything else to do besides spend countless, endless hours only focusing on this class.
WORST PROFESSOR AT CSUN!!!! If you are bored with your life and want to be HARASSED, then this is the professor for you. He constantly harassed me by saying I was cheating when I definitely was not cheating for his one point assignments. He makes everything worth one point then writes a comment that is longer than you have even wrote to begin with
If I could rate below a 1, I would. I was beyond excited to take this class and that excitement was quickly tarnished. Gives the most VAGUE prompts for any type of assignment, only to give you extremely detailed feedback with more questions he didn't ask in the first place. DO NOT take this class unless you need to.
An A is not impossible for this class but it will not be easy because his feedback is not really clear(I made a dumb mistake costing me the A). The stories at the beginning of the semester are really interesting but hits a wall at Black Elk Speaks and Ceremony. If you're a good writer, you should not have trouble with this class.
Professor Andrews creates these false allegations, scenarios in his head that are erratic and off. Once he falsely accuses you of something. It's all downhill from there. He's extremely bias. It's either his way or highway and overall, there no room for your own thoughts. Overall, the biggest Asshole at CSUN. I don't recommend anyone take his class
Do NOT take this professor! In this course your thoughts and opinions are always invalid/wrong. The professor assigns very lengthy readings then assigns a you a very poorly written/vague question in which you have to answer in 150 words. Although this might sound very doable, the professor criticizes and rebukes your ENTIRE opinion/point made.
He wants papers written specifically to his liking with specific points HE finds important, leaving no room for personal opinion, and doesn't let you know what he's looking for until you start receiving poor grades and receiving his notes. He's unpleasant and not worth your time.
This professor is a tough grader. Even when you write an essay or assignment in your perspective it is wrong! Fellow classmates did poorly as well. He provides you with the work and expects you to provide an answer parallel to his. Would never take again!
I have a lot to say, but the character count is too short. That being said, I will keep this short and simple. I would rather shave my head and wax off my eyebrows than take this class again. Worst professor ever I do not recommend.
Professor Andrews has a very specific teaching style - if you engage with it, you can do well. Stay focused, read the materials, and use helpful study tools like unstuck AI along with the textbook. The workload is heavy, but it's manageable if you put in the effort.
Grading feels arbitrary because it's based on his extensive knowledge on the subject, not what you know from the readings. Even if you read the assigned texts, you must figure out what he wants you to say, which isn't an easy task. Some of his comments were rude when he graded and they didn't help me understand what he wanted, it was demeaning.
He is an established individual in Native American studies with a PH.D, so expect to be graded with high standards. I feel he could improve his teaching style by giving a criteria for the expectations desired from each assignment. He could provide examples of writing styles he expects the student to follow for better understanding of expectations.
Although Professor Andrews is insightful and knowledgeable about Indigenous and Native American literature/history, his teaching methods are quite baffling. He'll give specific prompts to an assignment and even when you answer the questions as instructed, he'll find something to critique in an unnecessary response. I don't recommend his class.
I think Dr. Scott Andrews is passionate about what he teaches, but he can do a better job at the way he teaches. You could answer the prompt as asked, but he will find an issue with your answer. He is a fair grader for the most part and I enjoyed the readings he assigned.
100% Awful
You can tell he's passionate and loves what he teaches but is a heavy grader. Always finds something to critique and takes off points. Slightest of ChatGPT he will report you
It's okay and provides you with the readings but the thing that he can improve on is feedback being more specific and he will give u the lowest grade possible, a zero instead of getting aleast some points for effort done. just for the smallest detail he's not fond on the assignments, you'll get a zero. I wouldn't recommend this course
Took him back in spring semester and honestly in one word, I don't recommend this professor if you're willing to pass his class, he seems to be bias and will try to find something to accuse you of something and fail you, don't bother taking this class. Please do yourself a favor and look for another professor if you want to succeed.
In one word “awful.”
REALLY DIFFICULT GRADER!! you can do everything right and not get 100%, DO NOT take him unless you are prepared for this class to take up all your time. Had to read and buy lots of books, he writes paragraphs on everything you did wrong and it is not easy to pass this class. Would not suggest.
Best believe this professor is actually who he is based on many other fellow students feedback, for your own sake and sanity I don't recommend you to take any course with this professor, there's many other professors at csun who are actually willing to help us succeed and are not bias against us students.
