Very hard, but rewarding

hands down, the best teacher I ever had
he cares alot about the students and he does a great job covering the material. Plus he's HOT
He is completely fair the entire semester. His expectations are made clear at the beginning. It is not difficult to learn the material; he is very clear and concise. Plus... he is very easy on the eyes!!!
I think he is great. Theory is dry with anyone, but the assignments keep you reading and he pulls everything together. You know exactly what you have to do.
The course is no joke. You have to read and pay attention. He does what he can as far as keepin the lecture from being boring, but it's Theory. He is very helpful if you ask and does great clearing up the books.
He turns a boring, difficult subject into one that is interesting and understandable. He definately has a way of relating the subject to everyday life. He relates to his students and makes the lectures fun. He is also easy to talk and very intelligent.
Seemed like he'd be difficult at first, but was incredibly fair on tests! Made theory fun!
He was a cool teacher, he will help you, if you need the help. He makes the subject "understandable"! Take him if you can!
Thought his class was going to be difficult but it was actually interesting because he made you think for yourself. I enjoyed the class and think his type of teaching should be used more often.
who cares about the material. he's just so dreamy!
He makes theory very understandable, and i thought the way he presents theory is great. And if you needs clarity, he defiently helps the student. It definetly stimulate the mind for me, and it doesn't hurt that he's so cute.
easy grader on the written papers but his tests are hard!
I am suprised that he has gotten as good of rateings as he has, I did well in his class but hes a bad teacher he always answers your questions with "I dont know, you tell me" or "well, what do you think". Its like well, if I knew I wouldnt be asking! Not approachable tough readings hard tests bland.
Great teacher - makes you think instead of forcing his opinion on you which is a good thing- 4 papers - 3 tests - take notes and its an easy a or b
Studied my ass off in this class, but I only got a C. Boo.
He's a good teacher, probably the best in theory behind boyns. Maybe the best in general behind boyns and godard. If he was more dedicated to his students, he'd probably be the teacher he wants to be. He's still worth taking at this point, but hasn't quite hit his full stride yet. Good guy.
funny guy. MUST TAKE NOTES! i'd say overall it was a hard class. 4 tests + 3 essays. tests were pretty hard, so were essays. I'm a B student, and i worked my ass off and i got a B-. i dont like how he has his assistants (students who r wannabe teachers) grade some of the essays

He is great. Considering what I have heard about the other Theory 1 profs, he is the one to take. He's not easy but not hard. He gives you the grade u deserve. Definetely go to class b/c if u don't you'll be lost. If you go to class there is no reason why u shouldn't get an A. His test ?'s come from seminar questions..study those-Plus he's HOT
Great Prof. Fun, and I learned a lot. Mine was a grad class, seminar, and he was very personable and knew what he was talking about.
I don't know what class these other people were in but he sucked! Everyone in my class disliked him. graded odd. You think you did well, you really didn't. I'm just glad the class is over!
Bad teacher....don't take him. Only explains after papers are due and after tests. Wouldn't recommend him for this class. He's unclear and expects his students to be as smart as him--THEORISTS.
Dr. A is very intelliget & a excellent professor. He is tough on grading but he will go over exams before giving it & he is very willing to go over term papers indivdually before they are due. He can be a bit "cocky" but he is an excellent lecturer. He also co-authored the text, so you only have to buy 1 textbook. It is not impossible to get "A".
He'll try and scare you the first day or so, but he's not bad at all, he actually has a sense of humor. Is willing to answer questions constantly, go ahead ask! Study seminar questions, you'll see versions of them on the exams.
he was great! It's been years since i've had him. The class seemed intimidating, but in retrospect, it wasn't so bad. Overall, a great proffesor. Aced both classes!
This professor was very bad. He is all over the place and makes the subject hard. He goes over in class. I wouldnt recomend him. He is cocky and there is no interaction with students during his lectures.
Great! He makes a subject that could be very boring and hard interesting. He's ALWAYS willing to answer questions. Just go to class and pay attention. You'll know what is going to be on the test because he'll lecture on it more than once.
After two oddly difficult exams, the final was relatively easy. His class is a lot of fun if you don't mind just kicking back and arguing with fellow classmates for an hour or so.
One of the best professors I've ever had!! He is straightforward and very knowledgeable. He welcomes questions and participation, and reviews for exams thoroughly. You have to make sure you ask what you need clarity for when reviewing for the midterm and final. Also, a few quizzes which are not difficult if you review the night b4. Loved the class.
This class was very difficult. There is a lot of reading, and I mean a lot!!! The professor is rude and has favorites in class. He had bad explanations that left me even more confused. I really dreaded this class, and I should have dropped when I had the chance. Tough grader, tough personality. Stay away if you can! I regret having taken the class.
I agree with the viewer below me. He was totally not a fair grader and was very rude. I went to class all the time, took notes, reviewed them, and still didn't do well. He was not good at clarifying anything. I barely managed to pass. You're better off taking someone else.
i wonder how many people who liked this professor got a c. i would be willing to bet alot. he likes the sound of his own voice. my mother died during the semester and was in the hospital for a week and i had to deal with a funeral . he gave me no slack. he is a prick. question him about flaws in these theorys he wont like it.
Real tool! His voice so doesn't go with his appearance. He is not understanding at all! I wouldn't recommend him for any class! I write pretty darn good essays and the tool failed me? UGH!
Very professional instructor and very knowledgeable. It IS a difficult class, and he stresses the importance of staying consistent. I've learned a lot from this instructor by actively listening in lecture and reading the material. He may come off rude at first but really is a pretty cool guy to talk to if you need help, clarification, or whatnot
Great class...you will definitely learn alot in this class...you have to come to class and attend the labs...the class will be very difficult if you don't...Overall he is a pretty cool guy, but hard grader...if you come to class and take notes you will do fine...
NOT a hard grader- so i guess people lied. I missed about 3 classes, and also bombed all 3 quizzes. I got a B+. Just show up to every seminar and maybe like one lecture a week. You DO need the book so buy it. I thought it was a hard class the whole time- but I guess I was wrong since i got a good grade. He's not hot at all! He's very egotistical.
GOOD TEACHER LOVED THIS CLASS SUPER EASY
i dont know what these people are talking about hes great! hes a nice guy and has a sense of humor. his text his really hard to understand but if u ask him to explain it its much easier and he is always willing to help.
GREAT PROFFESOR!!! Cares about his students, takes his time until things are clear for you. Quizzes are straight from the book. Test are the quizzes and some other questions. Ask questions he will answer them. Completely recommend him!
He was a fair teacher. He usually returned assignments on time and they were usually easy, it wasmostly reading. He doesn't always answer your question, rather he rambles on on another subject.
Grades really hard! does not realte to his students . hard to understand. Thinks he is a higher class status than everyone else
This professor is a complete elitist and makes no effort to assist his students. His is an egotist who loves the sound of his own voice, even if it is off subject. He rambles on how most students at CSUN cannot write and have no cultural capital. He grades really hard; if you value your GPA, take someone else...anyone is better than this guy!
All right, this professor is one of those rare ones, especially at our department. He's tough, no lie there, but it's good medicine for anyone who's driven to enter grad, law or any other professional school. He expects much, but it's well worth it. My colleagues had trouble with variables such as jobs, but if you want to be educated, he's it.
Worst Professor I've ever had by far. Thinks of himself higher than others. Focuses on making himself look smart rather than helping his students understand what he is teaching..
One of the best teachers at CSUN! He knows his stuff and yes he does expect a lot from you but it is worth it! you will actually learn something. Just attend class, take good notes and READ and you'll do just fine :)
a lot of people i know had a hard time with this class but i found it to be easy as long as you go to the seminars and do the homework. lecture attendance is not mandatory. do well on the quizzes and you won't need to rely on the tests for a good grade. visit his office hours and he will give you points. but quizzes & hw are key so do well on those
great professor. Great at getting you to understand. You must read and take notes in order to do well. Grades depend mostly on quizzes and tests. If you dont read or are lazy you will fail, PERIOD. I got an A.
If you're brilliant, you're gold.
This professor is haughty.Thinks he is heads above everyone. Not helpful at all. Wants everyone to read his mind, literally, as if his thoughts are the only ones that matter. Run! Drop while you can! I feel sorry for anyone who must take him.
Intelligent man but really difficult. Hes kind of rude. He doesnt like anyone else opinion. he encourage students to ask questions but then he'll bash on them for not completely understanding the concept. Reading is difficult since he wrote the text, he'll teach the text. If you dont understand that youre screw.
He is a smart man, but thinks too highly of himself. He makes the class harder than it really is and makes no sense. The book he uses is written by him and is as confusing as him. I would avoid him and never again will I take his class.
There is a midterm, final, and 3 quizzes. He assigns 10 two-page writing assignments. Its a hard course. You need to attend lecture and take good notes. Even then, he is a hard grader. Many found it difficult. If I could have, i would have chosen a different instructor.
This professor is extremely boring and goes around in circles when he talks about anything. He just makes the material more confusing than it has to be. The book is easier to follow (and it's written by him!) I don't recommend.
I love this class! Not only was I able to understand the theoretical proposition that I couldn't understand before, but I was able to learn something new about society today. He is not egotistical whatsoever, he's actually quite helpful. He challenges the classroom by thinking outside the box, which people may find as egotistical.
I would NOT recommend this professor at all. If you get a chance to take this with anyone, and I mean ANYONE else, take it! Reading material is absurd, his student assistant grades harshly & marks you down for any mistake. I personally hated this class. The material was interesting but I will never take him again or recommend him to anyone I like.
Readings are difficult (took me forever to read because they're beyond boring), but he explains it in class. Tests are short. Easiest things are the quizzes. You HAVE TO take notes/pay attention/ATTEMPT to read to understand concepts. He's a nice guy if you aren't an annoying person. Material is interesting, but NOPE. Wouldn't recommend.
I took him for soc 368 and i DO NOT recomend him . He is very confusing and not clear in any lectures. Hes all over the place and does not care about his students, hes very rude as well. He makes you write a 2 pg essay about confusing readings and does not care about you understanding the material, but is extremely focused on grammar.
Great professor! Very helpful and clear on what he is saying. If you pay attention you will learn what the theorist is saying. If you do not then you will not pass. He answers all your questions and focuses on the main points
This Professor is not easy and is not hard, you must attend class and do the reading as well as taking notes. Ask questions! Do all the papers and do good on quizzes and at least one exam and you'll pass the class.
I really enjoyed Dr. Appelrouth's class because he connects the dots between theory and what is happening in our world today. I don't entirely agree with his grading. I missed class once, turned in all assignments and still managed to get a C. He grades papers based on his perspective and focuses more on grammarsentence structure than content.
Professor Appelrouth became my all time favorite professor. NO, his class is not easy; but why are you going to school if you want things handed to you? You do not learn that way. There is a heavy workload, but it does not feel unbearable because the topics are interesting and he explains them clearly. You will only fail if you want to fail.
Professor Appelrouth's class is quite challenging but it's possible to get a good grade if you read the material thoroughly, he's a tough grader on exams as well as the essays. He's looking to see that you comprehend the material and don't just memorize it. I would recommend his class if you're ready to do lots of heavy reading and writing.
Looking back I think the main thing that I disliked about this professor was the way that he made you feel both in class and via email. He zapped my confidence and made me question whether or not I belonged in higher education. After I graduated I realized the deeply negative impact he had on me.
If you have any other option, just go with the other option. His lectures consists of him reading from his own book, for a whole 2 hours. You discussing the material with him is way different than doing it on paper. It does not matter if you understand the material, it is how you write it and basically get graded on how you write (not the material)
It has been roughly one year since I took this class and felt it was important to return to rate my professor and provide the people, with guidance. This instructor does not care about your understanding for theories and has no clear guidelines of what he expects from your papers. Prepare to be left feeling ridiculed and dumb. Good luck!
This class is really challenging, but not nearly as bad as I though t it would be based on these reviews. The professor is really passionate about theory, and expects you to work hard and keep up with the readings. He's really nice if you do the work! He also has a sense of humor and likes when students ask for help.
I worked so hard in this class to get an A. I did all the assignments and did well on the tests. My group even saw how much effort I put into the class and I walked out with a C in the class. His lectures put you to sleep because he likes to hear himself talk. The book is difficult to understand. It was a 5 hr class and he maybe let us take a 10min
So my writing was not the best when it came to writing essays and I fell like that impact my grade A lot, but also the fact that I didn't read . He is very smart and wants everyone to learn. For him letter grades do not count if you did not get anything out of the class, which I agree 100%. Take this class but be prepared to work hard for an A.
He takes pride in his work, hence the book for the class, he is the coauthor. he is tough, he doesn't care unless you show you care. visit him in office hours, if you show interest, he will too. make sure you group up with people you trust otherwise that can impact your grade. if you want to be challenged, he's the way to go.
I took his soc 468 class. Overall, my experience is not bad at all, there is a lot of readings but the way he divided the readings it really helps to understand the material and each reading has a quiz. There are total of 7 group seminars and individuals but individuals are not grading based. Two In home essay exams, mid term and final.
He seemed a little intimidating at first. But wow it was a great class. There are weekly readings and his lectures go into depth about each one, he won't stop talking until you really understand. He's hilarious and can take jokes. Go to class or else you won't really know the concepts. I would've gotten a better grade if I didn't slack off
He's funny but a tough grader. I got A's in all of my classes except this one, the one I worked the hardest for. Even though he doesn't grade on attendance you kinda need to attend every lecture and read each assigned reading. The class had two tests which consisted of multiple choice and full essay questions, as well as quizzes & group quizzes.
Dr. Appelrouth can be very intimidating. He wrote the textbook, he knows his stuff, and it's a tough class. However, he is an amazing Professor and you will do well so long as you keep up with the readings and ASK QUESTIONS!! If you don't understand the material, let him know, and he'll explain it in a different way or provide you will examples.
One midterm, one final. Does not really give you a clear study guide, so you really have to read more than what you are assigned. Also gives quizzes here and there.
Don't get me wrong, he's a good teacher. I just feel like he should've been a bit more helpful with his students especially since this isn't a class you should take online and there is a pandemic going on. He goes on and on about things but doesn't necessarily pinpoint what you actually need to know. Doesn't care about his students enough.
If you love reading then by all means take his class, if you're like me who doesn't enjoy reading text books please take someone else. He expects you to read and know the material from the book. 1 midterm and 1 final. A quiz almost every week & 2 pub quizzes. He doesn't give study guides and expects you to memorize every theorist work.
Worst professor I've ever had. Couldn't care less about students. Lectures are just him reading passages from his own textbook. He's the type to brag about students failing his class because it's overly and unnecessarily difficult. He does not care about you or your grade. Take someone -- literally anyone -- else.
He was the only professor that ever gave me an F in my life. No other teacher has ever given me that grade. Despite the fact that I actually pushed myself in the second half of the semester to try to raise my grade. Also, just because you are more educated, does not give you the right to ridicule your students, like you ridiculed me. Dont take!
He seems passionate when teaching and really wants his students to learn, but his feedback wasn't very helpful & he needs to fix his grading scale as well. My class only had 3 (group) assignments in which 2-3pts each made the difference between letter grades. I constantly worried if I'd even pass no matter how hard I tried. No extra credit either.
Does not give a good break during the class, terrible teacher. My entire class had complains. Do not waste your time with him.
Rude. He picked on me for no reason on my first day just because, I quit the same day.
If you find yourself stuck with Appelrouth... I got an A without reading, barely attending class, doing mediocre on the quizzes/midterm but passing the Final, 2 Essays and pub quizzes with a near perfect score. so PASSING IS POSSIBLE IF YOU ACTUALLY TRY . If you don't understand use youtube, that's how I passed and learned the material!!
He is very knowledgeable in theory but he is condescending when giving feedback or when asking for help. I struggled in this class and in my entire undergrad experience, I have never had a B. If you get stuck with him, while you are reading the book, write a couple of paragraphs of what you read. It will help out with comprehension and exams.
I would definitely find another professor unless you like being judged by your questions/responses. He wrote the book so he's very self-centered in how he teaches. You really have to pay attention and understand everything to get a good passing grade.
This professor is extremely rude, uncaring, and a brutal grader. There is a quiz beginning of every week on material he has not lectured on " to make sure we do the reading ahead of class". The mid term and final are absolutely brutal with no study guide and extremely vague. There is absolutely no room error. He failed more than half the class.
For your own sanity do not take this professor. No matter how hard I worked for my grade it didn't matter because he is an extremely tough grader and when you asked questions he would just belittle you and answer your question with another question. -1/10
Read material, pay attention in class (take notes) & participate. This professor is tough, but you should be ok if you read syllabus, do the work, & form a study group ASAP. He is available during office hours. If you show that you want to learn, he'll work with you; contrary to an earlier post, he will work w/people with disabilities (I'm DHH).
Dr. Appelrouth is an amazing professor. You can tell he is extremely passionate about the subject! He get a bad rap, but if you go to class and listen to him lecture, read and study, you will get an A easily! I highly recommend him!
Definitely was super intimated by the reviews before taking this course, but Professor Applerouth has been one of my favorite professors. Make sure to read the textbook, quizzes every week (most have extra credit on them), and lectures are based off the readings. He was a super easy professor to approach. I recommend finding a study buddy.
dont listen to bad reviews!reading checks 5-6 q's but most have extra credit.find a study buddy/group & youll be fine.he wants u to ask questions and engage in the lectures!intimidating at first but he opens up & is very nice. powerpoints aren't posted online so def show up. he makes theory interesting esp for a longer class. seriously my fav guy!
He is honestly a good professor he is just intimidating and hard to warm up to at first. He is very sarcastic and will call you out which makes him unsettling, but passing his class is up to you and whether or not you want to do the weekly readings and go to class.
He is funny and passionate about theory. He quizzes you on the readings assigned that week to ensure that you did the reading. Then he lectures about the reading because if he taught it first it would be "too easy". If this system works for you then take him. He also does not tell you exactly what will be on the quizzes or tests.
Don't take this professor. All he does is ramble, his PowerPoints are 90% quotes from his textbook, and he's not a good teacher. Some of the quizzes are stuff we learned after we took it. He is passionate on his subject but it does not translate well. Plus if you don't read the textbook with its long chapters good luck passing the class.
do not, I repeat do NOT take him unless you are asking to fail. Out of 39 students only 2 received an A for this course. This class is soley based on exams and weekly quizzes. Don't even bother him about extra credit because he won't give you any.
I remember him saying the n word in front of the entire class. He said it during an example that was (clearly) irrelevant to theory. I was scared to say something At graduation, I stood alongside others who took his course during different times than I did, and one group shared the exact story. VERY uncomfortable. He is promotes microaggresion.
I agree with everyone else that he's intimidating at first but he genuinely wants you to understand the material and will clarify any questions (if you're shy, you can always ask after class). You definitely have to put in the work by doing the readings and coming to class. Extra credit on quizzes sometimes and plenty on the 2 group quizzes we had.
He is pretty chill. I wished he would give assignments where we can get more in depth of the material. Instead we read his own book and expects us to know everything. He would give quizzes before going over it in lecture. Does not give extra credit but only in the quizzes. All he does is yap in class and it is hard to focus.
Save yourself and don't take this professor , he's nice but he's tough his class is stressful if theory doesn't come easy for you and he overcomplicates everything . His midterm and final is BRUTAL.
He's very passionate on the subject but I did have a hard time trying to pass this class. There is NO extra credit and no homework. Your grade is made up from mini quizzes, the midterm, and final. If you miss class constantly you'll miss out on a lot of information!!! Lots of reading as well if you don't read the book you won't pass his class!
A key aspect to Appelrouth's teaching style is that he does not hand feed his students, you will have to put in effort outside the classroom. If you are not willing or cannot dedicate time to this course, you will have a very difficult time. Make sure to do all the readings and visit his office hours, he is willing to help if you ask!
I should have listened to the reviews ! ): ........................... HARD 100000000/10
Professor Appelrouth can be intimidating at first, but he's passionate about the subject. Stay on top of the readings, participate in class, and use resources like unstuck ai to prep - you'll do well. He's tough but fair, and makes the material engaging.
Great class filled with thought provoking discussions on the readings. If you don't keep up with readings, you will not get much out of it because he feeds off student engagement. Exams were difficult, especially the short responses, but he provides helpful feedback. This class confirmed my choice to switch to a Sociology major was the correct one.
