Obnoxious!

He's hilariously enlightening
If he could clearly explain concepts to the non-scientifically minded (everyone who takes Phy S 100) as well as he could tell jokes, then he'd be much better. First I was confused, then disinterested, then asleep, then absent. He tries his best though.
Bergeson is clearly doing time in this class. Humorous and good with object lessons, but can't seem to answer a lecture question with anything other than sarcasm. Expect to rely heavily on lab T.A.s to clarify concepts.
Only answers to the name Bruce and calls everyone in the class Bruce. Always starts class with a joke. Funniest teacher I've had. OK teacher.
A nice guy with a lot of sarcasm. Don't ask a question in class because he'll make you look dumb. Very helpful and friendly if you call him at home, almost like he's a different person. The tests were dumb. Only a nerd could get an A.
Bruce is the best! I guess if you're not scientifically minded, he might not be the best, but he makes class way fun! He's very passionate about his objects lessons and blows stuff up. Come on, that's cool. I looked forward to lectures every day.
this guy is great! for one thing, he looks like freaking steve kerr...but honestly, he knows his stuff and i've never seen anyone have so much fun teaching a class. what a hoot!
His lectures are quite animated so he is easy to listen to. His sarcasm bothers some, but I was fine with it. He is average at explaining concepts.
He's a great teacher--very entertaining! His lectures are fun and helpful. Make sure you keep up on the reading to get the most out of class. The class isn't too bad if you have taken physics and chemistry in highschool. He does a ok job of explaining, but TA's are a big help if you are confused.
Great teacher! Science can be boring if you don't have someone make it fun. Prof. Bergeson did just that: his lectures, the demonstrations, and the jokes make class truly enjoyable. He takes hard material and does his best to help you understand. Don't rely on TAs: they are inadequately prepared.
I hate science and was dreading this class, but I love going to it now! He loves the subject and gets totally excited about it, it's awesome! Also very entertaining!
Good class. Nice ratio of serious and fun stuff. Tests make sense. And the atmosphere in class and labs does not make you stressed out.
He is awesome! I always thought it would be hard to stay awake during science lectures, but he is hilarious so it was easy! I loved how he explained everything and tried to bring experiments in whenever he could.
This guy is the only reason I made it through PS100. Seriously, I looked forward to going to lecture every day - attendance wasn't required but I wouldn't miss it for the world. He made potentially monotonous subjects riveting. Simply hilarious too - absolutely love him.
Hilarious teacher! He entertains you, but also explains the concepts very clearly. I loved him. Also, he is very helpful if you go to him about valid concerns with the test. You have to take Physical Science from Bro. Bergeson!
Very engaging and light-hearted discussions. Tries to keep the heavy material light. Hilarious! Lot's of cool in-class experiments.
He is such a funny man and really knows the subject well. He has lots of really fun experiments and is always cracking jokes. He makes the subject seem less dull and really follows closely with the textbook. The tests are from the textbook and take good notes on his slideshows and go to the TA review sessions for the tests they are really helpful
bergeson is great but the class sucks. what he goes over in class has nothing to do with the tests. the tests are tricky and require to be able to apply information to weird questions. go to the ta test reviews and they help with the tests a lot. bergeson makes the class as interesting as it can be.
Class set up well. Ta's are cool and helpfull. assignments are easy and done in lab. EZ points. Daily quizzes are easy too. FUN. Prof is funny and cool. tests are short. Book practice quizzes have lots of errors, but they have it online to practice which is helpful at times. To get an A thru B- take this class from him.
Bruce is the coolest guy ever. hilarious, amazing, probably the best science teacher i have ever had. i hate science (even after taking his class) but he makes it funny and worthwhile.
I hate science but he made me laugh every lecture. I wish I didn't have to earn a grade in that class because I didn't do so well because it's a hard class. But I do recommend this teacher
I really really like this professor, even though I hated the class. Like American Heritage, Physical Science tests, etc are prepared by a board or something like that. He couldn't help how hard it was. He was truly entertaining and interesting, though.
physical science 100 is not a hard class. read the text book, all the tests are the same.. despite the professor. but this guy is hilarious. he makes the chemistry unit very entertaining. take him. you'll enjoy at least part of the class.
He is the best teacher EVER!! So funny and nice. I REALLY enjoyed this class. All or most of the information is in the book, so I guess class is not mandatory, but it is very entertaining. He has a great sense of humor and loves telling stories. Sometimes off topic, but always fun. STRONGLY RECCOMEND!!
Bruce = the bomb.com. Seriously his classes were entertainment, i didn't even realize how much i was learning until i sat down and thought about it. Bruce is also really fair, if you really deserve points back on a test and make a case for yourself, he'll probably give them back to you. DEFINITELY take Bergeson, LOVED his class and learned a ton!
This class would have been unbearable with a boring teacher. Bergeson is hilarious and usually gets across most of the material. I recommend him.
I hate physics. I hate it. But this teacher was fabulous, helped me understand (though the TA was kind of an idiot) and I came out with a decent grade and a better understanding of science, and I actually ENJOYED the experience.
Bruce (Prof. Bergeson) is so funny! there is no way to fall asleep in cladss or find it boring! the class and material are hard but TA study sessions are available and helpful for the tests. going to the homework lab is an easy way to get points too and reading the chapter before class is a good idea. overall a fun, great class!
uh, i don't recommend taking this class from bergeson. he's a nice guy but sometimes he's so worried about being funny that he doesn't explain anything having to do with science. the only way i understood anything was by reading the book or asking the TA.
My favorite teacher at BYU! He is hilarious, fun, understanding, approachable, and really clear about the subjects. The TAs are really helpful, but you also need to read the textbook. Overall though, this class was amazing! Definitely take it from Bergeson!
This class gave a good overview of physical science. Reading through the textbook and going to the lectures, I have often thought - "oh, now I get what the heck we were talking about in high school chemistry!" Bergeson is a great professor! So enthusiastic, like a little kid in love with science - his energy is contagious.
Best teacher ever!! Take any class you can from him. He's very funny; I love him! Before going to his class, I wasn't even very interested in science, but now I love it, and I've actually developed an interest in learning.
Bruce is awesome!!! I loved going to his class. He teaches really well. Textbook use just depends on how well you understand the concepts. Go the reviews before the tests they help a lot. Take notes in class and study them before tests. There are iclicker quizzes every day so attendance is kind of important. It was a great class though, I loved it!
Bergeson is an amazing teacher! He is always so enthusiastic about every topic. i-clicker quizzes everyday, [though he pretty much gives you the answers]so attendance is pretty important. The tests are not easy, and require a lot of studying time-but they are do-able. Go to the TA reviews-they help so much. Definitely take him, i loved him!
Way funny teacher. Tells a joke every class period. Has slides for every class, but does not provide them on blackboard unless you ask specifically. The class itself is hard, but he makes it enjoyable and fun
Funny guy. If you have to endure one science class, make it with Bergeson. He makes it worth your while.
Dr. Bergeson is a really funny guy. Clearly teaches stuff right out of the textbook. Labs do very little, but you get all your homework finished together, so it's worth going. Review sessions help a lot.
He is an awesome guy! Just attend the lectures and pay careful attention, this is the most helpful. I rarely read from the book and I received a good grade. A bunch of test questions come from the lab so make sure you attend them.
Way fun Teacher! Take the class from him, no doubt! A HELPFUL THING TO GET AN "A". GO BACK AND LOOK OVER YOUR TESTS!!! I found on the final that a number of the questions were ones we had already been tested on, and could have known the answer had i looked over my exams afterwards.
He was an amazing teacher! I dislike science but even I felt enthused after leaving his class. He's very funny and energetic. He keeps your attention through the class and is very clear. Highly recommend taking any class from him!
Hard class, but possible. Any problems with it are NOT Bergeson. Keeps the class laughing out loud all the time. If you are into physics or need physics GE, Bergeson is obviously the way to go.
he is really an awesome teacher and a helpful friend. his classes are filled with knowledge, fun and lot of dramas. nobody wants to miss his class. you can learn a lot of concepts with full of entertainment from his class.
Professor Bergeson is awesome! He's one of the funniest guys you will ever meet! He keeps you interested and entertained in class with lots of jokes and examples. If you aren't good at learning from the book this might not be the class for you, but if you pay attention and do your reading its great. The tests are reasonable! I scored 75-95%!!
Prof. Bergeson is fantastic! His class was amazing. He would do what the students wanted to do, and do plenty of example problems. It's a difficult class, but he made it as enjoyable as he could. Lectures always had some kind of experiment, and he always had quizzes online where you could ask question anonymously and he would answer.
He's hilarious.
Absolutely Hillarious. He's like a version 2.0 of Bill Nye the Science Guy! The class is hard, but he makes it enjoyable. Go to class every day, or your grade will regret it. He was very fair in grading, and wrote good tests for the most part.
He was very energetic and seemed to be everywhere at once. I felt he was hard to follow. There is a decent amount of work- 5-6 multi step problems before each lecture. The tests were about the strange exceptions talked about once and not the general rules. Don't spend the money to buy the textbook.
Hard Class. Study Often. I recommend Ross Spencer, but both are okay. Seriously, study and look over old tests right after you take the test (when it is handed back). Good Luck!
Great professor, good and easy class. Has lots of fun labs and demos. He tells lots of funny stories but still teaches the material great
Funny guy, but is not the best at teaching the material. He has to throw in a joke at least every 5 minutes. And if he didn't I think he would explode. The homework is irritating and hard to understand. The tests are difficult. All in all I would recommend someone else.
Bergeson is HILARIOUS! The class is difficult and there is a lot of work invovled, but I learned a LOT. I always looked forward to going to class, it's just so enjoyable.
Bergeson has got to be one of my favorite professors at BYU. He's funny, charismatic, and a great teacher. His class isn't easy, but it is possible if you do the work. He made me laugh every day in class. I looked forward to class!
he has a wacky personality, but it definitely keeps you awake. he's really good at explaining things if you go to ask for help outside of class, and he was really helpful. the class itself was really hard, but you can tell how passionate about physics he is. i'd like to take more classes from him.
I loved this class! Dr. Bergeson is hilarious and keeps the class entertained the entire time. Everyone I knew loved attending his lectures. This class is hard, but extremely doable. I had never taken a physics class before, but if you work hard and put in the effort, there's no reason why you shouldn't get at least a B.
Dr. Bergeson has to be the most hilarious professor on campus. His class was super fun because he would keep the whole class laughing the whole time. The labs were boring though, and his tests were SO HARD. If you take from Dr. B, definitely keep up on the reading and the homework. Great professor, tough class.
Dr. Bergeson is a very funny teach, but I felt that his lectures were lacking. He would always have some awesome visual example which keeps you coming to class, but I felt I learned much more from the TA's If you are reading, doing homework, and completing labs its not to bad. The homework isn't hard just takes alot of time. TA's were VERY helpful.
Physics is not my best subject, but his entertainment keeps me coming to class. He tries to help us get good grades, but it's still physics. If you need a teacher that will keep you awake, take his class.
Scott is thoroughly entertaining. He quotes movies and teases about making his class spiritual. Part way through the semester he made an extra effort to spend time after class to help the whole class with the homework. Tests are doable. Nothing that you hadn't already done in class or in homework set. Read ahead and bring your i-clicker!
He is genuinely one of the best professors that I've ever had at BYU. He knows what it means to teach.
Good teacher. Explained concepts well. Stayed a lecture behind the homework, so that was hard, but worth it because knowing how to do the homework helps a lot with the tests. Overall I thought he class was really easy and Dr. Bergeson made it very fun. A lot of time in class that's not very productive, though.
Funny Funny teacher! Dr. Bergeson is hilarious, he teaches all the concepts extremely well. His stories are so funny, but he applies them to the idea being taught-which allows you to remember it easier. He teaches everything extremely well, I've learned this class's concepts before, but I would say that Dr. Bergeson does the best job explaining.
Great Professor! Easily my favorite class of the semester. Made physics entertaining. You have to work hard in this class, but you'll have EVERY opportunity to succeed. He is very helpful. Most of the homework he does for you on the board if you ask him to. Great professor.
Best Professor ever!I tried to convince my friends to come to class with me just because it is so entertaining. He will help you with homework problems in class.Test have problems similar to those in class or on homework but give yourself lots of time in the testing center.I considered switching my major just so i could take another class from him.
This guy is the best teacher ever. He is hilarious, he teaches the concepts clearly, and he is SO willing to help. He asked for questions at the beginning of each class period and would work through homework if we asked for it. GREAT TEACHER! Take it from him!
Awesome Professor
LET'S BE CLEAR. The class is hard. Tests are hard (the teacher admits it). He spends time with videos and jokes. He could use more time to teach. His explanations are good. You should visit with him personally. IF YOU STUDY HARD on your own, you will pass the class. Don't rely on others but on your own efforts practicing. He does care about you.
Bergeson is hilarious and very animated about his subject. However, this is a calculus-based physics class, and it is difficult. Tests are part multiple-choice and part free response. The final is all multiple choice concept questions.
Dr. Bergeson's class is like seeing a stand-up comedy show everyday! He's hilarious, but also so excited about Physics! It's hard not to love physics after his class. Hard class, but he's a great professor and his lectures are very effective.
The material for this class is hard, but Dr Bergeson does a great job of explaining and demonstrating the subject matter. Very approachable and willing to help. study hard on your own, ask lots of questions and you will do well in this class
Very entertaining, yet informative class. Hardest part of the class was the multiple choice portion of the tests. Take advantage of the TA lab, reviews, and practice tests! Final was easier than the midterms, partly because you got to take an equations sheet in with you.
Dr. Bergeson is a very funny guy that makes lectures very entertaining and fun to attend. However, he's not a very good lecturer, and even though I loved the guy, I didn't go to class to watch YouTube videos.
I loved Prof. Bergeson. He made every lecture entertaining and enjoyable and rewarded us with points for reading the textbook.
Nice Guy. Most people I talked to agreed that they didn't learn much from class. You're only allowed to miss 6 classes. There is a 50 minute lab once a week. 4 midterms and a 100 question final. All very challenging. Go to the TA reviews and read the book (but study more what the TAs tell you to study).
The class itself was a joke but Dr. Bergeson is not a very good teacher. He is easily distracted, and did not explain concepts very well. I only went to class for the clickers, and spent my class time doing the assigned homework, because I got more out of it than by actually paying attention. Easy A, but I didn't learn much physics.
The topics are difficult but the homework and exams are very manageable. Dr. Bergeson is hilarious and very entertaining. I actually stayed awake unlike in my physics 105 class with Colton. Exams usually have 11 MC (1 extra cred) and 3 free response (with a few parts each). Homework takes an hour or less on average and are usually plug and chug.
Makes class more confusing than needs to be. I did better than in 105, but that is because the material itself is easier I think. He also has easier exams than I had in 105. However, I felt equally as unprepared. He keeps you engaged if you want to be but he goes off on a lot of tangents to joke around.
Great if you want to be entertained, but not if you want to actually learn physics. Be prepared to do a lot of learning on your own.
AMAZING teacher, perhaps one of the best, at least in terms of fairness. Incredibly for a Physics class, the tests were not mind-bendingly confusing--if you could do the homework you could do the tests. Hilarious and inspirational. The concepts, however, I felt were not explained very well to someone just learning this stuff.
Lecture is entertaining and he does cool demos .He makes u read a dumb book as part of your homework. U dont need the textbook Homework is hard, and so are the tests, but he lets you take an entire sheet of paper into the testing center. He doesnt curve the tests, but the grading scale is crazy curved. A hard class, but Bergeson is the best option
Go to class, he's hilarious!. Physics is not my strong point but I managed to get a pretty good grade in the class because it has a set curve. There are tons of opportunities for help if you're struggling. Pretty good teacher
Dr. Bergeson is the best physics professor! He will make you work a bit for an A, but come on it is physics! As far as grading goes he is one of the most fair teachers I have ever met. If you know how to do all the homework you will do fine on the tests! If you are looking to take physics at BYU take it from this guy!
I am terrible at Physics (I got a B- in Physics 105 from Hess) but I got an A in this class, and it was one of the most accomplishing grades I have ever achieved. He is hilarious and lectures will keep you entertained. I spent almost every day in the physics tutor lab and it paid off. Lectures are only mandatory for attendance (iClicker points).
Dr. Bergeson is amazing! His lectures are entertaining as well as helpful. His tests are pretty tough though, they can have tricky questions, but mostly because they're not very many questions so if you miss a few you end up with a B or C on the test, which ends up dropping your grade. (95+ is an A).
He's honestly such a sweet guy and genuinely cares about his students, however his tests get more and more difficult as the semester goes on and he seems to be teaching less and less relevant material. Be prepared to do a lot of the learning on your own.
Dr. B is very funny, lectures are entertaining. The material is pretty straight forward, but test (one about every two weeks) can be tough. The homework is primarily calculation based, but tests are mostly conceptual. Don't expect any curve or extra credit. Overall, Dr. is a good professor.
I clickers, homework every night, test every two weeks, assigned readings that have nothing to do with physics besides justifying his teaching schedule. But he is really passionate. Imagine Vlad the Impaler for gym trainer. You're gonna get results but gonna but it's gonna hurt! You're taking this class because you have to. Don't take Vlad.
Dr. Bergeson is a great professor and lecturer. It was in a large class but still individualized it by letting students ask questions and help with examples. The lectures are based on enhancing the textbook reading, so if you read the book, you'll be great.
Professor Bergeson is an entertaining lecturer and his class is set up to help you succeed at physics. You will have to learn some of the material yourself as not everything is covered in lecture. Go to the TA lab if you are stuck
Physical Science is known as a hard course, but taking it from Professor Bergeson made things clearer. Definitely go to a lab because your TA could save your bacon if you don't understand a concept because the 4 midterms rely on concepts that can be applied to different situations Get the book and keep up on readings so things make sense in lecture
Solid fella. Science made entertaining!
I loved him. He requires 95% for an A, but that's because his teaching style makes it so possible. No curve. He has 8 short quizzes (sometimes in groups) rather than large tests, a few short homeworks per week, and iClicker questions in class that are participation-based. Does everything he knows how in order to help his students truly learn.
Dr. Bergeson is a fantastic professor, he is able to teach difficult subjects in a gripping way. He cares about his students and knew a substantial amount by name (in a class with 100 students). Lectures are interesting, and despite first appearance, the vigorous testing and homework schedule is actually very manageable.
Good if you are prepared to take responsibility for your learning and review a lot outside of class
I dreaded Physical Science before the semester started; I never would have guessed it would end up being my favorite class! I really appreciate how this class broadened my understanding of science and how the material was clear, but also challenged my mind. I learned a lot, I laughed a lot (like, a LOT), and I'm really going to miss this class.
Definitely take physics from him, he actually cares about the students and does everything he can to make sure you learn. He also cares about your grade so he doesn't punish you for not knowing how to do everything and gives you several chances to learn. The tests aren't hard just study and do the homework and you'll get a good grade
A great professor for a great class! If you do all the work and study sufficiently for the test, it's an easy A. Dr. Bergeson is really good and explaining things and making lecture interesting.
Dr. Bergeson is the best professor I've ever had. He's goofy and eccentric and keeps his lectures entertaining, and somehow learned almost all of the names of every student in each of his 150 student classrooms. He teaches the material simply, and tests on what he's taught us in class - nothing came as a surprise, ever. Very accessible.
This class kept me going through the physics major. He made it so fun, and helped us all to understand so well. He cares about his students so thoroughly, and works so hard to help his students want to learn and succeed.
Taking Physics 105 from anyone else would be a mistake.
Physics is a really hard course because of the department. I don't usually rate my professors, but even though this class was so hard for me, cuz I'm no physics major, he really is one of the greatest professors. He cares about his students. He's brillant He's definitely worth taking the class from. He'll put in extra time outside of lecture!!
Whether or not you like him will depend on your style. Dr. B gives a lot of hw and tests frequently. This is actually helpful because you get a lot of opportunities to make corrections to your grade. 7 or 8 tests total, 3 of which are in class with a group. He talks a lot and often doesn't finish lecture, so prepare to spend time in the TA help lab
He's a very quirky and fun professor. He teaches very simply and clearly and is well liked by the students. He makes science fun and interesting. His tests are based on understanding the main concepts and ideas and so you don't have to memorize huge equations or formulas.
He is super funny and actually does make science interesting. It was an easy grade for me as long as you show up to lecture and do your homework.
I love Professor Bergeson! He's always funny, and having his class early really sets my day off on the right foot. I love to be around his optimistic personality. He makes sure that people understand, and even when we don't get things he knows that things can be tricky. His class really isn't that demanding. Just make sure you read the textbook.
Dr. Bergeson is so kind to his students--you can tell he loves what he does. Lots of tests in 105. We basically took a short midterm every two weeks, which was nice because a single test wouldn't tank your grade. Engaging lectures and really nice lecture slides for studying. His tests are all super fair and I thought his final was very reasonable.
Phys Sci 100 Lots of reading and online hw (sometimes hard but you can resubmit answers until you get them right w/o it affecting your grade). Dr. Bergeson does a great job of making class entertaining. If your final test grade is better than your class grade it will replace it. (i.e. 99% on final exam 99% course grade).
He's a great guy and his lectures are very entertaining with lots of demonstrations, but he doesn't cover test material very well. If you have a good TA and go to the reviews, you can do well on the tests and easily pass all of the homework.
He has so much energy that you sometimes feel like he is a game show host
Super funny Professor. Really cares for his students even though it's a huge class. The tests are pretty hard, final sucked but if you study hard you'll get an A.
Bergeson is always peppy and excited to teach. I think he had more energy then all of his students combined. He gave great lectures that really helped me understand the concepts and made class engaging so that we all learned better. I loved how often he tied the gospel into his lectures.
Obviously, this class is relatively universally presented, so the grading criteria is irrelevant as it is no different from any other professor who teaches this class. That being said, Bergeson is a great lecturer and does a lot in class to drive home principles with examples, practice questions and group discussions.
Dr. B is by far my favorite professor yet at BYU! He learned everyone's names in a lecture of about 300 students, and often greeted us by name. He gives plenty of time for questions, explains very clearly, and he's hilarious. There's one chapter of reading before each lecture, along with a reading quiz that you can re-take as many times as needed.
Dr. Bergeson is great! He is so funny and makes class very entertaining. You take an in-class iclicker quiz every day so attendance is mandatory. I really struggled in this class. I did all the reading quizzes before class and I studied very hard for the tests but got a C. Although this class was extremely hard, Dr. Bergeson was a great professor!!
I chose to take PHSCS 105 from him because he seemed to have good reviews. However, that was a huge mistake. The reading and his lectures never match. The homework isn't ever based off anything he goes over in lecture so you basically have to figure it out yourself. Don't take it from him. He doesn't do enough examples in class to prepare you.
There are a million exams in this class, but every physics 105 class has that many. Dr. Bergeson is a goofy guy who tries his best to help you understand the material. I've really enjoyed taking this class from him, because I feel like I know why physics is important in real life.
I'm not a fan of Physics but this class has been pretty good. There is a test about every two weeks which was kind of scary at first but ended up being super helpful towards the end. He's really good at being available to help you figure things out, he even has an hour before class where you can show up and he and several TA's will help you out.
I didn't have the brightest experience with Dr. B. Granted, physics was a hard topic for me. I felt if I had never gone to class, I would have gotten the same grade. But class is mandatory. I felt like I taught myself everything. He gives tests like every other week which didn't leave much time to let stuff settle. I wouldn't take him again.
Dr. Bergeson is the single most enthusiastic and loving professor I've ever had. Sure, physics is difficult. It always has been and always will. But Bergeson makes it worth it. His lectures are full of group discussions, practices, and awesome experiments. Please take him. He will literally make you a better person.
Incredibly enthusiastic and exuberant and excited to be teaching Physics. The definition of passionate. His entire class is structured to make sure you learn the material as much as possible, so 2 hw/week, a test every 2/3 weeks, which is a lot, but is so good for actually learning the huge amount of material you cover in class. Fantastic class.
He's the most genuine and likable guy. If you need to take physics, I couldn't imagine a better professor for the job. His homework is difficult, but many of the questions have online explanations, and once you understand them, a lot of things start to click. He has 7 midterms which actually is a good thing, as none have too much weight.
Nice guy, clearly cares a lot about students and about teaching well. Spends a significant amount of time teaching learning theory in class. Had 7 tests, but they were smaller and didn't destroy your grade if you failed one or two. Very energetic, lots of demos.
Quite the class. Made science interesting.
Dr. Bergeson is a great teacher. He is super inspirational and very funny. I used to not like science until I took this class... he made it come alive.
He is amazing! You have to work to make a good grade, but he teaches so that every student can understand and apply principles. He cares about each student and wants to help you succeed.
I have never really loved Science, but because of Dr. Bergeson, this was my favorite class! He is very genuine in his care for you, and is very considerate with student questions, and always tries to fully answer your questions. We had a substitute one day, and I realized how great Dr. Bergeson really was! He's the best!
I did not like Physical Science, but Dr. Bergeson is so sincere and funny, it's hard to dislike him as a professor. There's a lot of work required for this class but that's not his fault because it's a big gen ed class. Lectures were entertaining and I never fell asleep so that's good. He loves what he does and you can tell. Great guy
Even though I hate science, it was kind of sad leaving this class because Professor Bergeson made his lectures entertaining and engaging! If you put in the work and effort, you can definitely get an A. I recommend him!
Physical Science is mandatory for everyone not going into a science major. Professor Bergeson was such an amazing teacher and taught what was on the tests for every section. Even if you do not like science he was funny and interactive. It is possible to get an A just read the textbook. Anyone who gives a lower rating just did not put in the work.
Dr. Bergeson was a fun professor. He is a total goof and enjoys teaching almost too much. He is really good at teaching the material we need to know. Overall, this class is standardized by the school to be extremely easy no matter who you take it from. I would highly recommend taking it from Dr. Bergeson.
I loved Dr. Bergeson but dreaded the class in general. If you have to take it, take it from him. The lectures are so entertaining. However, you really need to read the book. So much is left out of the lectures. He gave us a list of topics on the final that went in order of the questions, so you know exactly what to study.
I am not a science person, but this class was my favorite because of Prof. Bergeson! He is amazing and you can tell he truly loves science. His lectures are engaging and he is just awesome and I loved coming to class. The class was not crazy hard. I found that the PHYS100 lab really helped because you can go ask questions. HW reading is not too long
Professor Bergeson is an amazing teacher and he really cares about each student. I always felt like I was going to succeed in this class because he and all of the TA's wanted us to. There are so many resources available to do well in this class. He was hilarious and made the class so fun to go to. I really learned in his class and highly recommend.
I was feeling not excited but not sad about taking this class but professor Bergeson made me want to come to class each day. Go to class and go to your lab each week and you will do great in the class. They understand each student and have every resource to help them!
Super nice guy. There are always in-class quizzes. I never read the textbook because we went over every chapter in lecture. I just googled the answers for the reading quizzes and there were tons of quizlets to help you. Easy class, just a lot of homework. Make sure you go to the lab because the TAs give you all the answers for the HW.
Professor Bergeson is one of the kindest professor I have had. He takes the time to memorize all his students' names despite haveing very large classes. He also takes adequate time to answer students' questions and concerns. His focus is helping you do well in the course, on the tests, and to better understand science in all it's glory. Take him!
Professor Bergeson truly cared about his students, but overall your grade is really in the hands of your TA. Make sure to go to your lab each week because that is where you get help for your homework. There are tests very frequently so try your best but if you don't do so hot on a couple its okay. There are in class quizzes for every lecture!
LOVED this class! This is an across the boards science class, with physics, chemistry, and some biology. I really enjoyed my time in this class overall. Prof Bergeson is hilarious! His classes are truly a joy to be in. Not sure how he could improve, whatever I didn't get it was for a lack of effort on my part.
He has so many students there's no way he can connect with them all but that doesn't mean he doesn't try. Make sure you read the textbook and watch the PS100 chapter summaries on YouTube. I really struggled in this class because I'm really bad at studying. Study and you'll be fine. The labs are super helpful. Make sure to go to those.
He is SO FUNNY and such a great teacher!! You read a chapter from the book and take a quiz before each class. Show up, do the work, and you will do well. Prof. Bergeson specifically teaches with the Spirit and is really passionate about the subject.
I am not a fan of physical science but Dr. Bergeson was a great teacher!! His lectures were clear, interesting, and full of enthusiasm. Tests were not too difficult if you study well. The textbook readings can be rough but definitely are helpful/necessary to do well in the class. Overall, great teacher! Would def recommend.
Professor Bergeson does everything he can to make his enthusiasm infectious and is pretty funny about it. He answers questions clearly. The grading for the class is pretty standardized throughout all the professors and a lot depends on the luck of the draw for which TA you get. This man made me like science! Take it from him!
Bergeson was hands down my favorite professor! He makes lectures entertaining and he is extremely funny, and I actually looked forward to going to his class. He knows everyone by name and is more than willing to work with you with any questions. Lots of tests but lets you take in a note sheet and answers are straight out of homework questions
Dr. Bergeson is one of my favorite teachers. You can tell he likes teaching, what he's teaching, and who he's teaching. He builds time into class for question-asking, which is really nice in a physics type class. He's definitely a Chaotic Good and it makes the class so much fun! I'm definitely sad that Corona forced us into an online class.
Taken online. His enthusiasm is through the roof, but exams are unforgiving and take 64% of your grade. Be prepared to fail some 6-question exams because of errors as small as missed signs.
Hands down the best teacher I have had at BYU so far. He is super enthusiastic, seems to actually like his job, and always makes this super cool, but also funny test examples for physics pre-class homework and lectures. Teaches super simply too. There' tests every two weeks so you don't have to cram everything you learn from 8 weeks for one test.
Physics is a difficult subject, and you shouldn't expect to get a good grade without sufficient work on your part, but Dr Bergeson's teaching is top notch. His enthusiasm is infectious, he explains concepts clearly, and he inspires you to actually master the material. He is also very accessible, and has setup his course to optimize learning.
He didn't give a lot of example that we can cover but we are doing some stupid breaking room sessions with TA.. Definitely they also didn't give a lot of examples not sure about others but at least mine was. BUT DURING THE TEST HE GAVES US A BRAND NEW CASES THAT WE NEVER TALKED ABOUT AT ALL AND EACH QUESTION TAKES ABOUT 10 PERCENT OF THE TEST GRADE
7 midterms, worth half your grade, the last one doesn't even open up until the last day of class. That is right, we have a midterm the last day of class. You can tell he cares about the class and what he is teaching, but I feel like there is a large disconnect between what he teaches and most of the midterm questions.
He's just a bad teacher. I took this class from a different professor, night and day difference. His test format is brutal, questions can be ambiguous, he doesn't drop anything, and he's just plain confusing. Pick a different teacher, any teacher.
He cares about Physics and is always excited to teach. You can hear how much he loves what he does. That being said, the grading is ridiculous. Tests are hard, and no credit given if any mistake is made in a problem, even if you're off by a sign, you lose all the credit, which is usually 10-15% of the test score.
Bergeson is a great teacher and is really good at teaching complicated concepts in a simple way. He's funny and good at engaging with the class. That said, the grading is insane and super picky. There's almost no margin of error for mistakes and the A cutoff is a 94 with no curve. Great class, but be prepared to work for your grade.
I'm being a bit harsh. However, lectures were hard for to understand. The readings that are required for credit are also very complex (a waste of time). The tests are difficult, but at least this semester we could use notes/textbooks/resources. Homework also takes a very long time. I would advise taking the class from someone else if you can.
The homework format was really nice - 5 chances to get the question right, 2 chances for full credit, and it didn't take too long to finish. The tests were open-note but brutal: only 9 questions, so if you missed 1, your grade dropped by over a letter. His lectures were good and he answered questions but he didn't always explain things.
Bergeson is such a great guy and professor. Always super kind and wants to help students. Online textbook can be useful but often goes beyond scope of class so dont worry about a lot of the textbook reading. Usually covers textbook material in lectures/videos. HW&tests are short and open note but can be hard. He's great but class can be hard.
Took it this semester when this class is taught online. This class is horrible where it consists of tons of hws and 7 mid-terms plus one final. The last mid-term is on the last day of the semester. Dr. Bergeson is not lenient in terms of grading. No extra credits, no curves, and no dropping grades. Please don't take it from him.
Professor Bergeson is an unbelievably caring and righteous guy. No doubt, he is one of the best people I've met. He isn't great at explaining difficult concepts, though. My friends and I all feel like we learned the material totally on our own. Lots of confusing homework that he doesn't explain during class. Open book tests.
Dr. Bergeson is among the best BYU has to offer. Seriously amazing person, great teacher and very passionate. As for the class, there is a test every other week, which was tough, but all open note, open internet (but not open google the exact question or video of someone solving a similar question), but timed. Tough class. Take it from Bergeson.
Dr. Bergeson is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Lectures were unorganized and hard to follow rendering them useless. The test are hard, be prepared to fail them. Points on the test are usually full credit or no credit. I breezed through physics in high school yet I would not have passed this class without my TA... he should've taught...
Physics 121 was a hard class. It didn't seem so bad at first but it's just non-stop. There's a test every 2 weeks. Prepare to fail a test because the tests ask for specific values and nothing else. So even if you did most of the work correctly, if you mess up once, you lose all the points for that question. He's a really nice guy though.
Physics 121 was hard, but Professor Bergeson was great. He obviously loves what he does! His lectures and assignments were clear, but I found that I needed extra practice to really understand the material and do well on tests. There were a lot of small parts to the grade and a test every other week, so stay organized and get help when you need it!
Don't let the other positive reviews fool you; Bergeson is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Want to take 7 midterms (yes, no joke, 7 midterms) and a final that are worth 65% of your grade? Want a professor who doesn't give any points back/curve the class even though the average on the final was a 62%? Then take this class from him. Absolutely ridiculous
You think Bergeson is nice and cares about his students, but at the end of the semester you realize he doesn't. The average on the final was a little over 60%, yet he refused to give any points back, bump grades, etc. I think that poor final score is a reflection on his teaching, but instead of making things right he literally did nothing.
This is a hard class with a lot of homework, 7 tests throughout the term, and a final, but all the tests are open book and open note, at least for BYU's zoom era. Bergeson is very cheerful and enthusiastic and makes lectures interesting. He's a great guy and if you put in the time and use all of the resources he gives you, you can get a good grade.
Dr. Bergeson is the funnest and most patient professor I've had. My physics life has completely changed. Among such a huge class, he cares about the individual. Be aware that the textbook is difficult to read, especially if you've forgotten calculus. The class is also very test-heavy and conceptual.
At the end of every test you have a place to write if a question wasnt clear. If you make a good case, Prof Bergeson will give the point back to you. Annoyingly, (tho this mightve been because the class was online) he had the tendency to talk to us like Dora. Like for prerecorded lectures he would ask a question and then pretend we answered.
Dr. Bergeson is incredibly kind and patient. I advise all to read the syllabus carefully. Many of the poor ratings are obviously from individuals who did not read the syllabus; it clearly addresses the things they are angry about. This class is very test heavy and you must study hard to do well. Dr. Bergeson is an amazing person and professor.
Professor B is a funny guy and a real character. Tests were open note open internet for us but were by no means easy. One thing I loved was that there were TA hours until 9 pm most nights, he's got all the shifts covered.
I like him as a person, but his teaching style does not work for an online class. He would rarely explain the concepts we needed to know and just do examples instead. He would go through the examples so quickly that no one would have the chance to ask questions. With 500 people in the class, even the army of TA's wasn't enough to get help ever.
He's a great guy and it's fun to watch his lectures because he clearly loves the subject. The many midterms were rough though. Each test had 8 questions worth 5 pts no matter how many parts they had. They're all straight answer, so you don't get points for work. He doesn't curve the grades, but he has lenient set grading brackets.
Lectures were very helpful and you get time with the TA at the end of class which is very nice. Tests were fairly difficult and didn't have too many questions though meaning one mistake and your score drops. Prof Bergeson is a nice guy but seemed to not understand students actually have scholarships riding on their grades saying "it's just a grade"
Prof Bergeson is a great guy and loves what he does but his teaching is geared towards those who already have a knowledge of physics. The tests are very hard and so is the homework. I often met with TA's and I was very accountable and in charge of my learning. I'm not a freshman who's 18 and just came out of highschool. This is a hard class.
He is a really fun professor during his lectures and the homework isn't bad at all. I was a bit annoyed because this class was still required even though I took AP physics and ended up learning almost nothing new during this class. Also, You have to attend class because he has in-person quizzes that expire at the end of class.
I loved Professor Bergeson's class! His lectures were always very funny and he really respects the students and always listens and answers questions well. On occasion, there would be a homework question that we hadn't talked about in class, so make sure to do the homework before TA hours end so you can get help if you need it.
Professor Bergeson was hilarious. I was not looking forward to taking this class, but Professor Bergeson made me look forward to coming every lecture. Material is easy and the tests aren't hard. If you took science classes in high school you should have already heard everything you will be taught in this class before.
Prof Bergeson is a super nice guy and his lectures are pretty good. This is a difficult class, and he gives a lot of exams (7 midterms plus a final) so just beware of that.
Hard class but great guy. If you have the chance to take it from him, it's definitely worth it
There are a ton of exams, but it sounds like other professors do the same thing for this class (it might be a standard in the department). However, Bergeson is really nice and funny and usually makes lectures a lot more entertaining than they would have been. If you can take it from him, I would recommend it.
This is a hard class no matter who you take it from! Dr. Bergeson clearly loves physics and his lectures are enjoyable. He does a lot of practice examples in class and makes them easy to understand. There's a place on tests where you can write assumptions you made if you were confused. This gives you a chance to get points back.
Don't be fooled by all the positive reviews. Literally everything I learned in this class was from TAs or myself. The textbook is useless, and the homework problems are always WAY harder than what he does in class. I still did really well, but it had nothing to do with him. Lots of jokes and concepts and not much actual practice in class.
Dr. Bergeson is hilarious and very passionate about physics. There are a lot of exams, but the homework prepares you for them really well, so as long as you stay on top of that, they're pretty easy. His lectures are very helpful as well.
This class is a joke. Dr. Bergeson does not care about you or your grade in his class. He has too many students to care. If you do not study 20 hours a week for this class you will not be successful. Get ready to do homework problems for 3+ hours with friends or in the TA labs and make sure to do tons of problems out of the book on top of the hmwk.
Class is a waste of time. He teaches the in a way that makes problems way more difficult than they need to be. Use the textbook and khan academy and you will do so much better. The sucky part is that you still have to go to class because of the i clickers. Go but dont pay attention and you will do better.
This was a hard hard class. I tried my best and worked on the homework for hours and I studied so hard and my best was a C+. They don't care about your success and make things a lot harder than they need to be.
The class is going to be hard regardless of the professor, but he does a good job. There are a lot of tests but it helps balance out the effect that each test has on your grade so I actually kind of liked it. Sometimes the homework seems impossible but overall the class is good.
Dr. Bergeson is really fun and cares a lot for his students. His way of teaching makes difficult topics really easy to understand. He is also so knowledgeable, truly an overall awesome professor.
There was hardly any connection between the tests, homework, and in-class examples. You could understand the physics concepts really well and still fail the math parts of the test because they were nothing like what we did in class. He thought he was way funnier than he was. He did team-teach this semester so would walk around and answer questions.
Great class and an enthusiastic professor. If you pay attention and do the homework the tests are super easy. The only part I didn't enjoy was mandatory attendance.
He is probably the most enthusiastic teacher I have ever had. The homework really does prepare you for the tests. If you go over all the questions from the hw for every test (only like 15 questions) you'll do just fine. He is an awesome teacher.
He's a really nice and fun guy and tries to make lectures interesting. But there is a big gap between the lecture material and what you are expected to know on homeworks and in the test. Wouldn't have survived without the physics TA lab. Tests were fair though.
This class is rough! My mind is not geared towards physics at all so getting through an exam every 2 weeks definitely took its toll on me. Thankfully the class itself was curved (at least when I took it during covid). Professor Bergeson was fun and definitely engaging in class, which made things better.
dr bergeson is a nice guy and I actually really enjoyed this class (especially that they had us read the book about learning and the class reflected the principles in the book). He teaches you physics but hopes that you take more than just that away from the class. My only complaint is that the homeworks were way harder than the in-class problems
I took AP Physics three years ago in high school, and this class was like an easy-breezy review. Doctor Bergeson is hilarious, and he reminds me really strongly of Danny Elfman, just with his mannerisms and the way he talks. As an Oingo Boingo fan, this made his lectures especially engaging.
If you've taken AP Physics 1 or some other physics class like it, this class should be easy. If not, this class may be a challenge for you. I really like that you don't have to go to the testing center to take exams.
Bergeson's lecture style is very entertaining, but can sometimes feel like a waste of time. Two homework assignments were due each week, and a test every other week. Take this class if you want a fun time, especially if you aren't a physics major but need the class.
Professor Bergeson is undisputedly one of the funniest professors on campus. He's super goofy, energetic, and makes every lecture fun and interesting. Physics can be rough, but professor Bergeson does a magnificent job at explaining physics concepts in a clear manner. I also love his short motivational speeches at the beginning of every class.
He is a personality in and of himself, which I love because it wakes me up during his class. I've never had the thought of skipping his class (because the lecture itself makes my day better). The homework is a bit difficult(and I took physics in hs), but that's expected because it's physics(and I sometimes mix up numbers). His tests are kinda hard.
He is a nice guy, but his teaching is all solving problems without explanation. The HW is very wordy and unclear, and is not ever covered in class. Tests are every other week and with little time.
Professor Bergeson is great at teaching physics in a way that helps students understand. His class is set up for maximum success and his grading rubrics are clear. The class is hard, but because of the topic. You will spend a lot of time on this class, but you will also learn a lot.
The lectures alone weren't enough for this class. I had to do a lot of background work in the textbook and extra practice to get the grade I did. Prof Bergeson does a pretty decent job of teaching this hard subject but class time alone wasn't enough to get a high grade. Sometimes his answers to questions were a little lacking.
Incredible professor, one of the best I've ever had. Unbelievably hilarious, intelligent and good at answering questions, inspirational, and kind. Recognized me walking one time on campus (I was in a 400 person class with him for reference) and stopped and talked to me. Absolute gem of a teacher.
Most positive reviews here come from people who had AP physics in high school, meaning they didn't need to learn anything. I did, and this class was nothing short of torture. HW, lectures, and tests were largely unrelated, making a 95% A (???) outside of your control. He likes numbers more, so here are our open note test averages: 82% 80% 62% 57%
I had never taken a dedicated physics class in high school or college before taking this class, but I felt that the pace and content was fair. Dr Bergeson is very generous with the tests, allowing you to use a page of notes with whatever you want written on it, so if you prepare properly for them, you can do well. Plus, physics is really cool :)
Dr. Bergeson is an incredibly intelligent and hilarious professor. Physics 121 is a tough class so be prepared for a solid work load and studying hard for the tests. The key to success is the TA labs. The homeworks were really tough for me to do by myself and the TAs helped me learn the content and do well on my HWs (which is 21% of your grade).
I have really mixed feelings about professor Bergeson and his physics class. He's a solid teacher and knows how to explain the class material well, but his grading philosophy is so just so questionable. 95% is an A in the class and he doesn't curve anything, even the final which had an average of 65%. And the final is worth 14% of your grade.
I seem to be the significant outlier but I really hated my time in his class. He's nice, funny, and energetic and I can tell he cares about making it fun, but he simply DOESN'T TEACH the core concepts in his class. He just goes over practice problems and it's 100% up to you and the TAs to succeed. If you're not familiar with physics, good luck.
The class itself is hard but Bergeson goes over a few practice problems in order for you to get the basic idea of the lecture. you really need to study and practice the problems in order to get a good grade.
Professor Bergeson keeps his lectures really entertaining even when the content is complex. I took Physics 121 with him. I never took a physics class in high school so getting through this class was tough for me. His lectures were super helpful and the homework is collaborative so if you pay attention and work hard you can get a good grade.
Dr. Bergeson really cares about his students beyond just his class. The course is very organized and he tries to do everything he can to help you be successful. The physics department imposes a 95 as the minimum for an A, but it is doable. Doing the homework is super helpful and probably is the most important way to prepare in addition to lecture
Dr. Bergeson is wildly intelligent, that's a given. I think, however, he loses the ability to properly go over the steps needed to complete problems in his lectures. He constantly told my class to "assume the lotus position" and that everything would be okay. He was not a strong communicator and I felt like my TA even struggled to understand him.
Dr. Bergeson did good enough teaching the easier concepts early in the semester, but got gradually worse as the semester went on and got harder. He shares great life lessons in class and has a strong testimony. The textbook is useless, might as well be written in a foreign language. He tests frequently and each test gets harder as you go.
I loved Dr. Bergeson! 121 was a tough class, and there were a lot of students. I think he did a great job in his capacity. He cared a lot about the content and he was pretty good about answering questions. Lectures stayed on track. Grades were almost entirely online, which was pretty nice. Also used iClickers in class for attendance.
I had never taken a physics class before last semester so going into this class I was pretty nervous, but Dr. Bergeson made learning physics manageable and even fun. He has a great teaching style and moves at a reasonable pace in class. Though the class was difficult at times, Dr. Bergeson made doing well in this class attainable.
He is an amazing professor, extremely entertaining and cares a lot about students. If physics is not fresh on your mind or you didn't take it in high school like me, the key is spending extra time on the pre-class exercises and really learning the material on your own before class to avoid being confused when he goes over practice problems in class
Dr.Bergeson is a very intelligent man, but it works against him in this case. Taking a relatively entry-level physics class from him was one of the most brutal things I've experienced so far. He isn't good at explaining simple things and tends to over-complicate the process leaving you in the dust. This class was unnecessarily hard.
7 midterms, each worth 8% of your final grade. Take notes during lectures, and don't expect everything on the homework to be covered during class. Super entertaining class though. It's a great day for science!
Bergeson is a pretty intelligent guy, which does go against him in this class a bit, and makes it difficult for him to explain physics in simple terms. Also, the textbook isn't too helpful, BUT the physics lab and preclass exercises are extremely helpful. Put in the time to keep up and you'll do ok.
Dr. Bergeson has entertaining lectures and is a great guy! He cares about the students and has a strong testimony. There are many small tests throughout the semester, and each question is worth about 1% of your grade. If you do all of the assignments and prepare for the tests, you should be fine. Just make sure you really understand the concepts!
If this is your first physics class or you didn't do AP Physics in high school it's pretty dang tough. There were 7 midterms and a final, with a variety of in-class, testing center, and online. The homework is also a lot tougher than any of the test in my opinion. Go to the physics lab in the Eyring Center.
Dr. Bergeson is amazing! Enthusiastic, funny, and he really cares about the individual student even in a class of 100+ people. He gets a little distracted sometimes but not very often. The material itself is VERY difficult. Textbook is hard to understand and there are exams every other week. The exams also make up a huge portion of your grade.
As someone who didn't take AP Physics, was only taking this class to fulfill a major requirement, and doesn't like physics in general, I hated this class. There was a test every week which led to constant stress. Dr. Bergeson basically didn't teach (I had to have my roommate who had Della Corte teach this class to me), and he got on my nerves.
Big class in the MARB. Not my favorite. Bergeson was not terrible, though. He's not the best at explaining things but the material isn't that bad and the tests were always easier than the homework. Almost every class has an iclicker quiz for credit which I don't like but I guess it forced me to attend class. He is a funny guy and a great person.
One of the hardest classes i've taken at BYU, especially because I hadn't taken physics previously. If you do all the homeworks and pre-class exercises you should be set up pretty well for the test, but sometimes he puts questions on there you've never seen before. Hard class that requires a lot of time but you should do well if you put in the work
Bergeson's class is no walk in the park, but putting in the work pays off. The material is challenging, but he's an enthusiastic lecturer. Utilize the physics lab, pre-class exercises, and tools like Unstuck ai to ace the frequent exams. Tough but rewarding.
The majority of your grade comes from the dizzying number of quizzes and exams spread through the class - they were nearly weekly sometimes. The textbook is a slog and often feels useless, but some things are very important. The boundary for an A was set to 95%, which felt unnecessary given the difficulty. Lower grades are easier, B- is in the 70s
Dr. Bergeson is energetic and passionate about physics. He can get on tangents, so just hope that you don't have guys in your class who have taken physics before who ask confusing questions. This was my first ever physics class, and it was tough. Lecture is just practice problems, so you NEED to do the readings+homeworks. 6 midterms and a final.
Crazy amount of midterms. He is not open to other types of learning (gives us no other options to learn the material other than the textbook). Make sure to take advantage of the physics lab.
Am I writing a review years later because I'm still salty? Yes, yes I am. Tests are a huge chunk of your grade, and are multiple choice, like 7 questions, no partial credit - miss 1 question you got a B on that test. Gave us a big lecture about how grades don't matter or define you, then was inflexible on grading, the hypocrisy was infuriating.
Honestly, this class is kind of hard, but it's definitely doable. Dr. Bergeson is a good professor but he's fast and does not explain much. I think it would be good if he slowed down and realized that a lot of people have never taken physics before this. He looks a lot like Bill Nye
