He is like an amazing professor! We always do crazy demos involving him catching stuff on fire or blowing stuff up! He really enjoys his job and you can tell. Plus he has a very good sense of humor. He is very easy to approach and truly cares that you learn in his class. I really did enjoy his class.
best teacher ever! make sure you get him! he is hilarious, LOVES his job, does a fabulous job teaching and is just an all around great person to learn from!
He is a total chemistry nerd but expains it in simple terms. I enjoyed his class and found him very eager to help students. I would recommend this professor.
Prof. Burt is an amazing professor! He really knows his stuff and loves his job. He is alays willing to help if you need it. He does give points for days you are their but his class is enjoyable so it is easy to go.
Professor Burt is the best! He is so enthusiastic and just an overall great guy. He loves what he teaches and he brings that message across to his students. If you want a professor who is into demo labs and awesome ties, then he is the man for you!
He is very good at explaining things, but his tests got ridiculously hard as the semester went on. The work load was horrible and even though I did okay on the tests I got marked down random points from labs, iclicker quizzes, and online assignments. The assignments took about an hour and there were 4 due each week, even over thanksgiving break!
Such a nice guy. VERY willing to help and wants you to learn. But he is a RESEARCHER, not a PROFESSOR. His tests at first were easy. But mid semester, things got so so hard. I spent hours studying, going to all the reviews,go talk to him, and still get a D on the tests. THey were impossible-I did everything I could. TONS of homework all year.
He is a nice guy, and really smart, but the class was really pathetic. I pretty much taught myself the material, but still had to go to class for the iclicker quizzes. I kept getting marked off on stupid things that shouldn't matter. The tests seemed easy but then everyone does terrible and he doesn't curve it well. This class was a bad experience
His tests were IMPOSSIBLE! He was a great guy and was very likeable but he gave homework on the weekends and had very difficult and timewasting labs every week. His final was ridiculously hard.
Took him Fall 2008. Nice, but only taught the basics in class, and expected you to know much more advanced material for the exams. Labs were too difficult-- basically had the TA tell you what to write-- and not helpful. I would not recommend him!
He is a great person and seemed to genuinely care about the students. His lectures were dumb, I didn't learn a thing. I taught myself the course. You have to go to class only for the i-clickers which are dumb. The exams are impossible and are not close to what you do on the homework. He expects way too much on the exams. Skip chem 101 if possible!!
Such a nice and funny guy, but he has no idea how to teach chem. He got most of the inclass questions wrong-and has iClicker quizzes everyday that you have to attend class for. I had to teach myself the material because he doesn't explain it well and mastering chemistry is a joke. Hard tests/hard labs-especially for those who have never taken chem.
Dr. Burt is a wonderful chemistry teacher. 101 is essentially high school chemistry. I think people who say he's bad just have a tough time learning chemistry b/c their strengths are elsewhere. He'll help you on any occasion, I emailed him all the time. Stay on top of your work, go to class for i-clicker points, do the labs. It's totally doable
He's really one-track minded. If you don't understand what he's talking about, stop him and ask questions. He's very helpful, but his TA's are sometimes hard to understand. He offers tons of help, but it's not always the easiest way to understand. I learned best by reading the book.
This class was extremely boring but not all that hard. There was a ton of busy work and you have to attend the lectures, but the tests were similar to the homework. The final is given by the American Chemical Society and isn't like anything we'd ever done before. Plus you have only 55 minutes to do 60 questions. It stinks.
Easy - as an introductory class should be. Dr. Burt is a friendly guy who wants to get to know you and makes himself readily available to answer any questions or concerns you might have. I highly recommend this professor.
This was a good class but it did require lots of work. As long as you stay on top of each section you will do fine. Professor Burt is very nice and tries really hard to cover all the material. The class consists of exams, a final, iclicker quizes, and labs. If you just do your work you will do fine! And Prof. Burt is a great teacher.
I regret taking this class. Professor Burt expected us to come to class with the concepts already mastered. He was unclear about his expectations on quizzes and skimmed over the material. He clearly enjoys chemistry but does not lecture effectively. The TA was not helpful either.
Class was ridiculous. He was all over the place and made tons of errors while teaching and on exams. However, I took the class during spring term so it was super fast paced and this was his first time teaching the class. I would take someone else if possible.
Brother Scott is a good guy and teaches well. He loves to make things explode and i love listening to him say "mass". hilarious. BUT BE CAREFUL. you may think you know chemistry but the tests are killer for some reason. especially the final. other than that the class is cake.
I took this class my first semester in college and it stinks. Try to not take this class at all, and if you must take this class avoid taking this teacher. He expects you to put 15+ HOURS for his class alone in order to get an A -_- and he also makes his test so that the avg grade is a 70-75. AVOID IT! worst class of my semester.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Class is useless and tests do not represent what is In the book. Choose a different teacher!
He's a nice, nerdy guy who really does care about teaching--he always says he loves to have people ask him questions in office hours. However, his expectation is that most people will get C's, and he curves things that way. The tests are a lot harder than the homework. If you want to do well, be a chem genius or put in a LOT of time.
Chemistry is difficult. He writes the tests to be much harder than the standardized chemistry final. Weekly labs, but they are easy and you can drop two. His lectures can be confusing, but he has office hours. He is so helpful during office hours. If you take advantage of that time, I encourage taking from him. Class average is around a 75%
Professor Burt is great. Chemistry is a tough subject, but he's always willing to help you out. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OFFICE HOURS! He's way helpful and friendly if you go to him for help. Tests are difficult but doable and it's possible to score well if you're willing to study. If you take the homework and labs seriously they'll boost your grade.
He is a very funny, and nice, but his lectures are pointless. I had to teach my self out of the book. The labs are very easy, and the homework is not that difficult, but his exams are HORRIBLE!!!! Hard class!
This class was ridiculously hard for a 101 class. I took 2 years of chem in high school but wanted a refresher in college before 105. Even with my previous knowledge and continuing to study, the tests were over the top hard. The rest of the class is fairly easy, but the tests make up such a large percent that it is extremely difficult to suceed.
Nice guy, no doubt. A little quirky and likes to blow up balloons. His tests are hard, tells you that you need to know everything we've covered. Not clear explanations. If it wasn't for his TA, I would have had no hope. Try to find someone else, but if you can't, be prepared to work hard. Then again, maybe it's because I took it over the summer.
I took the class during summer and managed to do well. Nonetheless, It is all up to you to get the grade. He provides opportunities to learn and improve the grade. Don't rely on his teaching though.
Dr. Burt is as good as you're gonna get for Chem 105. I took the class during summer term and didn't fell like it was too overwhelming. However, if your not willing to hunker down with the text book and work extra practice problems don't expect to do well.
one of the worst professors i've had in my whole life. the average on his second test was 32% for the free response, and he laughed about it during class. He curves his grades but it doesn't quite help, you have to depend on yourself and understand everything by your own.
I highly recommend studying the material before class and getting a head start on mastering chemistry homework. He is very approachable and wants to help people succeed. His free response questions were pretty hard overall his tests were easy. I would take from him again
Dr. Burt is awesome and totally helpful. He is passionate about what he does, fun to impersonate and funny (intentionally and unintentionally). His lectures can be a little confusing at times but he is more than willing to help you. If you read the book and do the homework you will get an A. I would take this class again
Nice guy, very clear and easy to listen to. This was his very first time teaching 106, so he did pretty well if you take that fact into account. Exams are super easy, homework is long. Make sure you go to class and ask a lot of questions. Get a good TA!
Unless you are a chemistry genius or you have 20 hours a week to study for this class, this class is extremely difficult. He writes the tests expecting the average to be around 70%. The tests are impossible. The average on the second test was 50%! I know that chemistry classes are hard, but I guarantee you can find an easier one than Dr. Burt.
Professor Burt is an awesome teacher. His lectures are very clear and he clearing explains problems as he goes through them step by step. Tests aren't too bad and he is fair and will drop questions that everyone misses. Tests follow the homework so as long as you stay up to date on the homework you will be fine.
Took this class my first semester at BYU and it was horrible. His tests are ridiculously hard, I mean seriously, this is Chem 101! Don't take from his if at all possible.
Dr. Burt is one of the quirky professors here, so that makes the class fun. Stay on your toes though, as he is also one of the tricky ones as well. Be sure to read the exams Q's very carefully, and get a good mental concept for a principle, rather than working out specific problems when studying. Talk things out with people, that helped me a ton
Prof. Burt is one of the quirkier professors at BYU. He's very excited about chemistry and he loves the material he teaches. He's pretty flexible with grading. However, this class lives up to its reputation, it's not for the faint of heart and if you're not motivated you will struggle, no matter the professor you take it from.
Professor Burt is a great guy and a good professor, the only down side is the class he teaches. I enjoyed going to class to see him blow stuff up, but if you are going to take this class, get ready because it is going to be one of the hardest things you have ever done in your life.
Okay, so the class sucked. BUT, Scott Burt is the most wonderful teacher I've ever had. He has this little chuckle he does that just makes my day every time I hear it. He is a really nice guy, and you can tell he genuinely has a passion for what he is teaching which really affects this course. TAKE FROM HIM. HE IS GLORIOUS.
For Chem105, he drops your lowest midterm and averages the other two, so that was very nice. The tests are RIDICULOUSLY hard, but all of the Chem teachers have similar tests, so you can't avoid it. He is a great person who loves what he teaches! Take from him (if you HAVE to take chem)!
Dr. Burt is probably the most merciful chemistry teacher at BYU. He dropped the lowest test score, let us use a 3 x 5 note card on all of our tests and he curved the tests and even the final. His lectures were not necessarily amazing but they were good. He gave us many opportunities to succeed. HOWEVER, Chem 105 is not easy from any teacher.
Alright is essential vocabulary in his class. If you've already graduated from college chemistry or are Einstein then you might as well start praying now, because this class is for people who are that smart and have no social life. passing with an a, pfffffff, you have a better chance of finding gold.
Burt is a likeable guy, but be warned: Chemistry is not for the faint of heart. You have to put in effort.. A lot of effort. The 3 tests (drops one and averages the other two) and final were out of this world. He did give a nice curve at the end. Homework due every Wednesday. iClicker quizzes everyday in class.
I took him during summer term, which means covering a lot more material than normal. I had to spend quite a bit of time a week doing homework, reading and prepping for tests for his class, but his lectures and humor were fantastic. I always loved going to class. Apart from the tests, everything was practically participation. Would take him again.
Professor Burt was great. It is a chemistry class. It is going to be a lot of work. But his lectures and personality made the time go by fast. He made sure that we understood concepts before moving on, and I felt completely prepared for his tests and final. It's a lot of work, as all chemistry classes are, but I would definitely take him again.
Dr. Burt is a good teacher. Chem 106 will be hard no matter who you take it from. I found his lectures to be extremely boring, but with that said I find chemistry to be extremely boring. I thought he was very fair and went out of his way to help students. Good choice for any chemistry.
This was a really tough class, but I think it would've been that way no matter what professor I had. Reading assignments and homework for each class, with 4 tests and a final (lowest score is dropped), and you can use a 3x5 card. This class involves lots of math; I needed extra help to pass. Having a good understanding of 105 is critical as well.
Terrible teacher, take from someone else. If you ask a question in class expect to hear, "come talk to me in office hours, we need to get through these concepts."
Chem 106 is a difficult class if you don't try and put in the effort. If you do the reading, really understand the smart work homework, and study really well for his exams you will do well. If you don't have a good understanding of chem 105, this class will be difficult. The notecard he lets you take into exams is a life saver!!
I love Dr Burt! Slight curve to tests. Participation IClicker quizzes in class. He drops your lowest test score and replaces it with the average of your two higher scores. I bombed the first test and did well on the other two and still got an A. He gives a review before each test and the review slides are EXACTLY the test. Best 106 teacher for sure
Dr. Burt was a great teacher. I did okay in Chem 105 but I felt that Dr. Burt taught 106 really well and I was able to pull off an A. Attend lecture, do all the smartworks (I did them all in a study group), and go to the tutorial lab for questions. Chemistry is generally tough, but I think Dr. Burt made it as easy as it can be. I recommend him!
Dr. Burt is almost too smart to teach 106. He has a really hard time explaining things on a basic level so that everyone understands. A lot of time the examples he did in class were completely different that what we saw on the homework. 3 exams are only 20 MC and 7 FR questions so you have to be basically perfect. Nice guy, but very tough class.
Knows his stuff, not always super clear when he teaches tho. Often he would run out of class time and not get through all the material and expected you to learn it on your own or go to his office. There is always homework after each class period. Doable class if you study and keep up on the Homework
This class was really hard for me, but chemistry isn't my thing. Professor Burt is a nice guy, and his lectures clear, but he moves really fast and doesn't always go in-depth enough for me, I had to do a lot of catching up outside of class. You'll work your butt off for this class, and I wouldn't recommend skipping. Be prepared.
Professor Burt does a great job of preparing you for his tests, his in class reviews are very helpful. The online homework was extremely long and heavy at the beginning of the semester, but towards the end the number of problems got shorter. If you put the work in you will do well in this class.
Dr. Burt is great. He loves chemistry, and makes sure that you understand the WHY behind all the equations and concepts. I took the class during summer term so things moved laser-fast. The class is definitely hard, ESPECIALLY if you struggle with math. However it is very doable if you work hard; he's been my favorite chemistry teacher so far.
The guy is a genius. I took it during the summer so it was a little faster than usual, but definitely doable. You definitely work for your grade but Dr. Burt is very fair and has even offered plenty of extra credit. He is really good at explaining hard concepts, but you do have to study to really understand the concept on your own. I give him an A.
Dr. Burt is a great teacher. Not only is he good at what he does, he makes it fun to learn. He's super passionate about chemistry. The class is a little harder if you don't understand the math, but if you work hard and do the homework, you should do fine.
Professor Burt is a genius. Sometimes a little too smart for this class but he tries his best to dumb it down so we can understand. He is fast paced and expects you to stay up to date so don't get behind. Overall, he is a solid teacher but with some quirks. Put in the effort and you will do fine.
If you can, take 106 from someone else. For some reason, the homework for Burt seemed longer and harder than the homework from other professors. 6 midterms and a final. My one issue with his tests is that on the midterms there is a 2 hour time limit and the final there is a 3 (its 3x longer than the midterms). Its ridiculous.
Don't take Burts class. Very bad idea. Take it from Macedone. When I talked to students in Macedone they seemed to hate life a lot less than I did. Burt doesn't explain things well and thinks we know a lot more than we do. I did okay in Chem 105 and thought it would be about the same... wrong. I did significantly worse in this class. 0/10
Great teacher. We had 6 midterms and 1 final , but they were all pretty fair. Personally, I really liked having an exam every other week or so. It kept me on top of the material and each test covered less material than your typical 3 /4 midterm and 1 final chem class which helped me have more time to understand each concept a little more in depth.
Dr Burt is really good at teaching basic chemistry to all levels and making sure everyone is on the same page and understanding the material. The online homework is sometimes tedious, but it's manageable. I highly recommend this class for the general chem credit, especially if you took high school chemistry.
I found Dr. Burt's class to be extremely difficult for a basic level chemistry course. Dr. Burt's lectures were rushed and confusing and his explanations weren't much help. The tests are really hard and sometimes there are questions on them that we barely covered in class.
Hes more worried about getting through lecture than to explain things clearly/answer questions. Ask for help and hell basically tell you to do mastering chemistry, as if we arent already. Concepts arent crazy difficult but you pretty much have to teach yourself. Lectures mandatory but a waste of time. He does drop 1 of your 2 first midterms
Dr. Burt is super smart, and you can tell he wishes he could go more in depth in this class. He's really good at answering questions and preparing you for the weekly homework. He is also accessible outside of class and helpful with lab reports or assignments. Would take again.
Dr. Burt is one of my favorite chem professors. If you are deciding between him and Macedonia, take him! He is very clear on what concepts will be on the test, takes the time in class to explain concepts, gives extra credit opportunities as well. Chem 106 is like any other chemistry class you have to work for you grade but he is a great teacher!
Dr. Burt is an excellent professor. He clearly knows his stuff, but more importantly, he can explain it in an easy to understand way. He also makes it clear what will be on the test and what you will not need to know (until higher level classes). His lectures are amazing. 10/10 would recommend.
Tests are 70% of the grade and they are super hard. I took this during spring and some days i spent 12 hours straight on this class. The homework felt tedious as most of the concepts were pretty straight forward but it's a lot of work.
Professor Burt is an amazing professor. The class was tough with lots of homework but that is any Chem 105 class. Professor Burt was passionate about chem but he always stayed on topic during class and only talked about relevant information. He also has a good moral compass and he respects his students. I recommend Burt if you have to take Chem 105
Dr. Burt has been by far one of my favorite professors at BYU. He truly want his students to succeed and if you reach out to him he is more than willing to find ways to help you do well in the class. There is a lot of homework but it helps you know the concepts better for tests. I have learned a lot and definitely recommend taking his class!!
Dr. Burt is a great guy and obviously wants the best for his students. His lectures seemed a little rushed though and I ended up having to teach myself most of the content. He is very educated and knows his stuff but teaching it is a little bit harder to follow. Great guy though!
Dr. Burt is awesome. The class was hard, but it was also taken during the spring semester so everything was condensed. His lectures are engaging and he is fun! His interest and engagement during the lecture make it exciting. Tests are hard but if you do the practice tests and review with TAs you will be ok! Good luck!!
Dr. Burt is an NMR wizard, and he organizes the lecture portion of 455 in an incredibly effective way. He gives you the tools you need for homework, which prepares you well for exams. Collaboration with other students is encouraged. His lectures feel a bit rushed at times, but he's eager to chat about NMR outside of class you ever have questions.
Dr. Burt is the best science professor I've had at BYU. If you are a visual learner, take it from him. He uses slides and is very fair. Using Chegg will help you in this class lol, bc the class hw is on Smartworks. All of his tests this semester were online which was very convenient
Dr. Burt explained difficult concepts well, but this is chemistry! He recorded lectures, posted slides, and included many demonstrations. I don't know if he'll change his tests, but study groups outside recitation would've helped me so much! I hated the smartworks and getting penalized for each attempt.
This man is my favorite science professor that I have had at BYU. Gen Chem is obviously hard but his learning suite is extremely organized, his tests are based off of exactly what the TA review goes over, and he makes the class fun (lots of demos). Definitely would recommend doing the textbook reading before class, I think thats where I went wrong.
On the first day of class, Prof Burt walked in with a bowtie. Really great and funny, and gives lots of demos. The tests were a bit difficult and there was a lot of homework, but I ended up really enjoying the class. TA's were great and accessible outside of class. A lot of scores are also dropped, and you can miss a few lectures. Highly recommend.
I really liked him his lectures are fun. Lots of homework but it is really helpful and prepares you for the test. GO to your recitation it will be helpful.
Dr. Burt is one of the most flexible professors I've had. You can watch the lectures online from home or in person and get full attendance points. There is a lot of homework, much of which is tedious. Ultimately, the class is set up for you to succeed.
I really liked Dr. Burt's lectures! He had lots of demos that were super fun to watch! There was a lot of homework and the program was hard to work sometimes. Test's were so hard and I didn't use the TA's enough so that didn't help me. So I would take this class again but I would change my own study habits. Good class and professor!
Professor Burt was actually my favorite! He is very accommodating. The tests were not difficult if you went to the TA lab and did the homework. They were also online instead of the testing center which was super nice. He always had a different bow tie on and there were always such cool demos in class. Highly recommend taking this class from him!
Dr. Burt is a great professor. Records all lectures so you do not need to attend in-person. Dr. Burt will grant extensions on homework and excuse absences, very flexible and understanding! He does cool demos in class to keep the class engaged. Attend intersessions held by TAs, they will help you on exams. Shoutout to TA Shelby, he's the best!
This class is tough! But it's a college chem class so what do you expect. But Prof Burt is awesome! His lectures were always engaging and enjoyable. I enjoyed attending class. Lots of HW and lots of study but you'll be fine if you put in the effort.
This class was way harder than it need to be. I still don't understand why we had to take so many exams... 5 for the entire term! Class structure aside, there were a lot of technical issues. We had multiple instances where the study guide and practice exam covered the wrong topics. Even the Exams covered questions from the wrong unit!
