Very cute, especially when he reads old english
Very rigid, very limiting on discussion topics, created an uncomfortable enviroment for some students.
He's very helpful, enthusiastic, and to top it off...he's pretty cute.
He is the best professor I've ever had in my life.
Muy Caliente!
Definitely knows his stuff and is very enthusiastic about the topics. Only one paper, 8-10 pages, you pick the topic. Tests were easy enough if you went to class and reviewed your notes. Very helpful and concerned about students learning.
Rather pompous, and in love with his own knowledge of English. More of a show off than a teacher.
Scott is indeed a tough instructor and he comes off as pompous simply because he knows his stuff. I enjoyed his classes and he will be a great professor once he's had a few years under his belt.
I had a great time in his class! However, my perspective may be a little skewed due to my passion for self-deprecation.
I admit, I spent much of the first three weeks of class repeating to myself, "I will not be intimidated. I will NOT let him intimidate me." I recognized, however, that I saw in him something that has always been valuable to me in a professor: a
Disciplined, well-read, inspires students to excel, fair, subject matter expert, objective, open-door policy, challenging, traditionalist approach; if you listen, you'll know the subject, too.
He's a great teacher, and you can always talk to him about anything. If you work hard on the end paper (there is only one) you'll do great. You must be willing to work though, its a challenging class with essay tests.

He is a very good and learned professor, and I would recommend his class to anyone. The tests, and the single paper are reasonable as long as you prepare for them. I fould him to be a bit intimidating, but he is very nice to look at.
He makes people cry--for real! If you want to pass a course then my advice is to not take DeGregorio!
Funny guy.
Good teacher, very knowledgeable, but he is constantly moving around, which is distracting. He is a pretty easy grader but you HAVE to read everything.
Tough man. I changed my major thanks to him. Good luck to anyone who decides to take his class. You'll have no ego left if you take him.

He expects a lot of work from his students. I have learned a tremendous amount. His tests are difficult in that you have to WRITE IN DETAIL. However, if you are confused or need help, he is more than willing to work with you. I find his lectures to be interesting, and most of the reading enjoyable
Degreg is a good professor. VERY CLEAR. Students know what is required on the single paper and all the tests because he explains it and does not appear to mind if it is vomited back up verbatim. He's a very learned man, nice sense of humor; it's just that he teaches old lit no one enjoys reading.
Very UNCLEAR. Fails to explain what he expects from you, even with the right answers, it's possible to fail an exam. If I were you I would NOT take him.
His class is one of the most ridiculous experiences I've ever had. I have always done very well throughout my academic career, but the fact that I had to worry about his class more than any 400-level is unbelievable. He is VERY UNCLEAR about what he wants.
I found DeGreg to be a great prof. I paid attention in class, and I do not understand what the complaints are about the lack of clarity or "pellucid" arguments. Was crystal to me. I've gotten A's on the tests and papers. V approachable man, v funny and helpful. Take him for comp 235, can't go wrong.
People who complain are stupid and forget that they're in college. It was a challenging class, espcially for it being only a 200-level class, but it was decent. But, you guys forgot to give him a hot rating! He and Bond...yummy.
I found this professor dull and rambuled on and on like he was into his own little world. He would laugh at things that made no sense to the class. This teacher just got to excited about things like Chaucer and Beouwulf, honestly who cares!
Nice guy. I really enjoyed the class. He is such a gifted teacher, he really makes you want to learn. I wish I could have spent more time just listening to him....My nurse is back to give me my meds....gotta go..:)
This professor is knowledgable, but you either have to be on medication or seeing a therapist to really appreciate the extent of his self aggrandizing psychosis. He reviews these ratings and will have this one erased; Stings eh scot?
different.
This is a great class, if you make time to do all the readings (heavy reading load, don't take as blowoff elective!) Prof. DeGregorio's a very interesting lecturer who really knows his stuff, and you're sure to learn a lot. Grade is determined by several tests and one big paper.
If I tried any harder in this class, I would have been driven to drink myself to death....and I still got an A-. From what I hear, an A- in any of his classes is like a Nobel Prize for English Lit. Phenomenal lecturer...the best. Just really, really f*cking hard!
Although he is quite knowledgable in his subject matter, the lectures come off as ego-centric and one-sided. He would benefit from being more open to opinions other than his own.
This was an extremely challenging course, yet well worth the time and tuition. He's difficult, yet not impossible, dedicated and enthusiastic. (Not bad on the eyes either) People that complain about him seem to forget this is a UNIVERSITY, you'll learn and grow a lot which is what I'M here for.
appears to be rude, to scare students. at the end of semester, i knowtest he's not realy bad, and he helped a lot of students pass the class even though they flunk the papers and exams. He Looks tuagh, but he's not really. take him, he is not realy bad especially if you participate in class.
This was the first time he taught this particular subject, and I think he did a great job. He seemed to have his favorites to speak in class, but he did allow everyone an opportunity to speak. He talks really fast and you have to pay attention. I found him to be an excellent teacher and a hottie.
He's not a bad teacher. He needs to learn from experience and address his shortcomings or he will never improve. He has potential.
Scott is a great professor. He's knowledgeable, an interesting lecturer, and willing to help if he's asked. He has high, but reasonable expectations and believes that all of his students are capable of reaching them. I appreciated his high expectations and his helpful comments. I encourage anyone, especially in English, to take Scott's classes.
1st impressions can deceive. Scott isn’t the egotistical, rude prof that some attest him to be. If you stop by during office hours, you’ll see these comments were made solely out of ignorance. Brilliant and extremely passionate about what he teaches, Scott has high expectations of students. If you need help, just ask and he’ll gladly assist you.
this teacher finds your weaknesses and then crucifies you for it. overall, disappointing.
This man has a reputation for being difficult, he is. But if you keep up you will learn a great deal. He is very smart and hyper, he talks fast and it's hard to take notes. You will learn so much...it is worth the hard work.
Very good teacher, and very nice, but he is difficult. He will not give easy grades so prepare to work
A lot of reaidng not intresting. very boring do not take
A great teacher! He talks a little fast, but if you can keep up with him he shows you excatly what he's talking about and doesn't leave room for you to be confused.
worked my butt off. went to see him all the time, did homework, came to class, did not explain things well. got lousy grade. why did he become prof. if i keep hearing so many bad things from other people?

The best English prof. @ UM-D!!! Very nice + helpful. Classes are always very interesting and informative. Exams are challenging yet fair; you'll actually feel like you've accomplished something if you do well on them. The people who whine about how tough his classes are idiots who probably shouldn't be English majors in the first place.
Ignore the blasphemous rumors. Scott is a great teacher. Yes, the work is challenging, but not impossible. If you're having trouble with anything, talk to him; he's always glad to help. He's clear about what he wants on exams & papers. Pay attention, keep up with the readings, ask questions, and you'll do fine. He's really very nice. Hot, too.
This guy is nice enough. Classes are all lecture, even if it seems like you're discussing (on a note, if you're not Christian, the material is going to bore the hell out of you). You do have to work in his class, but it's not impossible... just do the readings and study his website for exams, and keep in mind ENG235 is a 4 credit course.
I enjoyed the class, but he gave me a grade that I think was below what I deserved.
Scott was awesome. He seems very difficult in class, but that is partially because the material can be so daunting. If you go to him for help, you'll find that he isn't as uptight as he seems. When I took him, he actually gave us tours of the Ann Arbor library to find sources if we needed help. Seriously, it doesn't get more helpful than that.
He seems to enjoy making people feel uncomfortable, that's the way I felt when I had his class. I was the only non-english major and I managed to do fairly well, however I was not impressed with his condescending attitude.
He just jumps into lectures and goes really fast. He says he is there to help, but whenever I went to him, he was not helpful. I am an English major and his class actually made me rethink my major! I have taken better professors now and realize it was just him. I do NOT recommend him unless you are up for a huge challenge.
Great, Great, Great professor. Hands down, the most learned English professor at UMD. His lower level class gave me more insight than any other English teacher at UMD has. He makes you work, but you learn more than you will ever know. My first exam was not that great, I talked to him ONCE and scored in the high 90's on the next two.
I've been putting off his class for 5 years, cuz I heard he is a horrible professor. I actually think it's the oppoisite- he is one of the best. He's hard, and makes you work for your grade. But he is not impossible. He's willing to help, but is intimidating. You'll learn a lot! His vocabulary is very intense, so pay attention.
On exams he will take off a lot of points for a seemingly small offense. Beware of the definitions on exams, always explain more than you think you should. When he says papers should be free of errors he means it. He made me doubt myself and my abilities as a writer. The result was that I became paranoid. Likes to talk but doesn't like to listen
The best prof at UofM-D. Honestly, he is a pain because he is a rough grader and demands perfection, but you learn a great deal. Yes, he thinks he is always right, frankly, HE IS. SO be thankful for him.
he is the worst proff ever!!! he is boring and sitting through his class is impossible! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
Scott is very thorough and demanding, but very interesting for the most part. He seems like he's not very good with people, so his jokes will never be widely well received and most students are too afraid to approach him; but Scott is very helpful and extremely understanding if you just gather the courage to talk to him. He's better after that.
Also took 311-demanding prof, no doubt but the amount of material covered is well worth your tuition dollars. You might be bored but there's no doubt you'll learn.
One of the worst professors at UMD. Impatient with students' comments though he claims to encourage them. Misses or is late to class when he feels he has somewhere more important to be, and isn't afraid to share that with the class. Pompus, and irritating. Avoid if you can!
Most of the people who complain about Prof. DeGregorio, who's very nice, are bad writers who can't handle getting the grades that they deserve and/or people who are too lazy to keep up with the fairly formidable reading assignments for his classes. If you genuinely care about deepening your knowledge of literature, take him and you'll learn a lot.
Have to give my support for the guy. He will challenge you. However, if you are an english major(and know how to write), you will do well. If you have trouble speaking proper english, don't take him. Whoever said learning was easy.
DeGregorio has changed a lot recently. It may have been because of the bad reviews before, but he is alright now. This was a Chaucer class and we only had 2 papers and 2 tests, other homework was not graded. He never kept us long in class and was easy going. I think he is much better now although I didn't get the best grade...
Professor Degregorio is easily the most demanding member of the English faculty. The reading is formidable, his assignments are difficult, and he expects a lot from classroom discussion. But, you get what you pay for. He sets the bar very high, and if you meet it, you will learn a lot and become a better student. College isn't suppose to be easy.
Self righteous. He tells you one thing and this downs your grade for doing what he tells you. Very nitpicky. I loved the readings he chose but didn't care for his ego or the chip on his shoulder.
I don't really understand all the complaints, this is UofM, you are paying for a QUALITY education which means NOT coasting through. You're SUPPOSED to have to work hard, it's called LEARNING. Prof D'G is incredibly knowledgeable, and helpful if you go to him. Tough grader, but worth it, you'll learn a lot if you do the work. Geeky-hot.
He is demanding, he expects a lot, but this is the University of Michigan! I got an E on the 1st test, but then studied hard, got my stuff together, took notes, wrote a good paper and got a B in the class, I think that he respected me for being committed. I talked to him, told him why I screwed up, he was supportive and understanding! Great teacher
You learn about the "mean" professor in his Engl classes 235 and It's just really because if u didn't have anything like that in high school The class is really strange bec. of the language BUT once u get to the 405 class u notice that he is just about being a thorough teacher- less demanding BUT very very intelligent.
The worst professor I've had. Knowledgable but no human warmth. Arrogant, defensive, condescending. No clear grading practices?will mark down for minor grammer errors, but is not interested in what students are getting out of the class.I would never take anything he teaches again, even if it means going somewhere else to fulfill requirements.
DeGregorio is AWESOME!
Great professor! Knows his stuff. Only the stuff he talks about in class is on the exams. Took this class from 6-9 pm and he didn't make attendance mandatory, but if you didn't come to class you missed a lot of material because we only met once a week.
As long as you go to class and do the assigned readings and papers, the class is an easy A. He basically tells you what is going to be on the exam. If anyone fails this course its because they're lazy.
Awesome teacher! Knows everything about English, speaks Latin and Middle English too! He is extremely helpful and will offer to discuss your paper before you turn it in. Very fair grader, great discussions, and easy tests. Just read the material and participate in class and it's an A. Never had a prof. know so much about their subject before.
Even though the person below me thought the class was easy, I have to disagree. He grades really hard on his tests. I studied so hard for a test we had on poems (memorzing like 50 authors and titles) and ended up getting a 65 and i wrote 4 pages worth, front and back!! class is mandatory and if you miss even one class you'll get a progress report.
Arrogant but knowledgeable. Hard grader. When he tells you to see him before papers, do it- he's not very clear about his expectations unless you speak with him. ie. 5 page max means 5 pages no more no less. Must attend class- hes sensitive about that. I learned a lot in this course.
Extremely UNCLEAR as to what he wants on tests/papers. Hardest english grader there is at UofM. Period. Nice guy, great texts, awesome lecturer...but horrible for actual grades. Didn't get a single grade returned until 3 weeks before class ends! No quizzes, no grades for in class papers, so testing and grading policies hit you like an atom bomb.
Great teacher. Ive had him for three classes and I'll enroll in his classes again. All you have to do for an A is listen to his lectures and do the readings. Tests are predictable and papers are a breeze as long as you meet with him to discuss your topic.
A very good teacher, explains all the texts in great detail. Has note slides on internet and always says to not take notes...but do take notes! It will help a ton. Test structure is the same for every test and as long as your actually read you will be fine. Only two essays with one being the final. Great class!
Manageable. Lectures are long and boring. He uses up most of the hour. Book is mandatory or he snaps. Exams aren't predictable, they are tricky, long and stupid. Read the assigned readings and pay attention when he mentions quotes, they will most likely be on the exam. Paper isn't too difficult. DON'T SLEEP IN CLASS. sense of humor. recommend him.
In the syllabus it said there was a "heavy reading load" which scared me lol but it was not bad. Read, pay attention in class, and join in on class discussions. Decent class. Was boring at times.
Best professor I've had at UMD thus far. Very passionate and interesting in what he teaches. His tests are pretty easy, but he grades his papers a bit tougher. Recommend him highly.
I LOVE DEGREGORIO! I have taken two classes for a grade & received an A both times. This semester I am auditing a class of his. His papers are easy as well as his exams. Lectures are interesting but do the readings. Participate in every class for a better grade. Definitely a must take for any English major. Will definitely recommend and take again
Regurgitate what he says in class on the exams and you'll do fine. One paper (6-8 pages) and four exams. He expects you to attend class and volunteer, so do that. Fair grader, but seems to retract a bit from what I've learned being an English major, paper-writing-wise.
Don't take for a block class. This guy can talk for hours! Gave us a 5 min break during a 3 hour class and kept us over almost every night. 2 papers, 2 exams, and ten 1 pg responses to the readings. Very vague about what he wanted in our papers. Exams were crazy hard; but he made both take home after we begged. Class participation is a must.
I would not take this professor again. He knows the material very well but he is a hard grader, the lectures are very long and uninteresting, we had to read a book every single week and write a two page response and some weeks we would have big important papers to do on top of that. Do not take if you don't have a lot of time to put in.
A teacher I'd avoid like the plague, especially for Honors classes. His lectures are long and boring, and he gives no helpful feedback on papers. Essay topics are vague and open, expect your thesis to get shot down 20 times before he settles. Insists on seeing every student for their paper but is hardly in his office, will make you call him.
He is a very straightforward guy, giving you an exact timeline of the semester at the beginning of the semester that is super easy to follow. He grades well and gives you good reasons for why you got the grade you got. If you sit in the front, you will be called on when you raise your hand.
Love him! Take him if you're in the honors class. You'll never regret it. Just be ready to speak, and to write REALLY good papers. Hint: He's really hard on Grammar and logical theses! I had him for HONS 302 tho. Update the system, please!
Very picky with students and expects to set aside everything for his class
