Avoid if at all possible. He makes the first half of the semester impossible and every quiz is pretty much a guaranteed failure. Towards the end of the semester he began to lighten up but quizzes were still impossible bc of relentless grading. If you miss class you probably won't pass

a little helpful, but grades harshly taking points off here and there for small things. gives a quiz each week so attending class is important. Can be a smartass and is a grad student so it could be that his attitude depends on how things are going for him in school. Not too bad compared to other TAs but dont expect an A

Terrible. If you get this guy withdraw asap! i had a class of 36 people. 6 made a C or higher. Only 2 girls made As. 26 people failed. Do not let this guy mess up your GPA and get another teacher.

not completely easy, he give quizzes pretty much each class period & in order to do well on them it's important to review things that he has covered before hand. Can be a smartass but really wants to be helpful in the long run

ok first off you have a quiz every friday and you have to right a research paper but the material is not that hard. He checks attendence by a sheet passed around and i missed a day but i still did good on the quiz if you had a good mathematical teacher in high school then he should not be that hard

He is not a good math teacher at all. Plan on not getting a single one of your questions answered with a real answer because 99 percent of the time he does not know the answer. In all of my friends math 111 classes they very rarely have homework and we regularly have 50 to 60 problems. Quiz every friday and he is very RUDE!!!

He's an OK dude, and not very easy to push over. Knows his stuff, you'll definitely leave knowing more than you did coming in. Only problem is that he assigns a research paper and frequent quizzes too!

This was awful. I had him at 8am mwf. It really isnt that hard but he is bad at teaching. his quizzes are terrible and he grades really hard. the paper isnt bad. the tests multi choice are hard. the exam is all that you go over in class it was pretty easy. avoid if possible but if you cant get ready to study a lot.

Math was always my best subject until I took his class. Even though it's algebra, I got a C in there because he's too confusing. He isn't a very good teacher and assigns absolutely TOO much homework on WileyPlus. Don't take him. But if you do, don't even purchase the book. I paid $115 for it, and we NEVER used it. Buy the WileyPlus code.

Not the best MATH 170 teacher to take,many others are much easier and much more helpful.Didn't use the book at all but used the WebAssign that came with it every week. Homework due weekly, quiz EVERY Friday.Tests are tricky and he is often pretty unhelpful with giving any points back, even when it's obviously his fault.Had to work to keep grade up.

Most of these ratings are unfair. I find his homework reinforces his teaching, and multiple times he's spent the majority of class going over homework problems people SHOULD go to his office hours for. He really knows his stuff, and has fun comments and a great personality.

I was a math wiz, keyword: was. He counted off if you did not show every single detail of work. I had NEVER made anything but A's, barely escaped with a C. Made students cry, told students they needed therapy, and never EVER was ANY help. He knows his stuff, but if you want an A, take anyone but him.

HW every week and a quiz almost every week. Attendance mandatory. He's a funny guy though and really explains the material well. Most of the reviews below whine about him, but that's because he doesn't just give out free grades. HW takes time, and you need to actually study for the tests. Would recommend to other students.

Dr. Dunn is quirky. He is great for Calc 1 if you took some form of calc in high school. If not, he does not explain concepts and theories as well as he could so if you had never seen material before it would be confusing. He spends a lot of time proving things that you will never need unless you are a math major. Easy to pass: pay attention& study

He is not very good at teaching. He doesn't relate anything you learn to the book we are supposed to use, however he gives a ridiculous amount of homework that all reflects what is in the book. Doing some of the homework assignments made me want to drop out of school and his class has single handedly ruined my GPA.

So many homework assignments. Answers questions with more questions. Really gotta grind it out if you want to stay with it in this class. Takes forever to grade exams. Even if your answer is right if your work isn't perfect he will take off points.

Even though I got A's in all of my past math classes, I was barely able to pass this class. He is an extremely tough grader, doesn't answer questions clearly, and was disrespectful to students. He assigns lots of work, which I would not mind except the work does not reflect questions on exams. I honestly regret taking his class.

This was a really tough class. I would not recommend it anyone. Dr. Dunn was extremely sarcastic and unapproachable. He was not easy to go up to and ask questions. Often times made me feel very dumb. The test, quizzes, and homework were not the issue. I had a problem with his personality.

I hate math & I'm glad I had Dunn. It's a tough class and I had to work HARD for my A, but he walks through each section that will be on the test and his questions are fair, never "Where did this come from?" He IS picky about the way you show your work. He is kinda intimidating, but his sarcasm makes class more fun. Weekly quizzes and lots of HW.

Not bad. Prof. Dunn likes to challenge his students, and to him challenge means questioning you when you take that leap to participate in class and answer a question. "The probability is .41" "Are you sure?" He is good at explaining and is very helpful, especially if you participate. He isn't mean and will try his best to help you understand.

DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is unnecessarily rude and does not seem to care if you succeed or not. He often asks if anyone has questions and then complains about answering them while making fun of the student who asked. If you do end up having to take him, the textbook is unnecessary but you have to buy the access code for hw. Requires participation.

Mr Dunn is the most unhelpful and arrogant teacher I have ever dealt with. I thoroughly enjoyed my Math 122 class last semester and dreaded coming to this class every day. He teaches his own methods then expects you to know the hybrid of those and that of the textbook creating great confusion among students. He is not a nice personteacher.

Dr. Dunn is a cool person, but not a good teacher at all. He expects you to pick up on complicated concepts almost immediately, and ridicules students who do not manage to do so. His derision in class kept students from asking questions or seeking help, because he was so rude and unfriendly. His tests are very difficult, and he's a hard grader.

This man has caused me to lose all of my respect for USC's math department. My two prior professors were excellent and I had hoped that he would be as well. I was wrong. He tries very hard to be hip and fit in with the students, but he cannot and I wish he would stop trying. He's very condescending and rude and will not answer any questions.

Great professor! He's definitely a tough grader, and he's definitely a very detailed person; little mistakes will cost a lot. But, you will really learn the material and actually understand what's going on. He's always willing to help, gives extra credit, and weighs everything fairly. He's a funny guy, and is willing to negotiate grading.

Dr. Dunn is a great teacher because he tries to make the class very fair to all students. He also does an amazing job of explaining the material. There is quite a bit of homework in his class, but it was very helpful to have the practice and his tests are taken from the homework as well. I would highly recommend taking his class.

The notes he gives in class don't always correspond with the online homework i.e. some vocabulary words are left out, or the formulas have to be inputed different

The one thing I really don't like is how he teaches by just doing in class problems, instead of taking real notes and then practicing. Online homework isn't difficult and there are some online quizzes, pop quizzes.

He does attempt to teach the material and succeeds in telling you how to do things, but does it through making you memorize proofs and do problems instead of straightforwardly. He took so much time to do HW problems that we never took notes at times. He was willing to adjust grading scale and fix things. OK guy overall but a struggle to get that A.

Dunn's hard and will make you work for your grade, but he is a good teacher. He is not super personable, but his lectures are really great. He explains it in a way that will really help you. An A is definitely attainable, just don't assume it. You will leave his class with a good foundation and understanding of math and that's what's important.

Very unhelpful when it came to preparing for his test. Mostly wanted to get through his agenda rather than answer some questions students had. Overall it was a very confusing class and I would avoid Dr. Dunn in the future.

Would not recommend taking this professor for math 170. He's an extremely picky and tough grader that seems to enjoy tripping students up with hard test questions. Gives a ridiculous amount of hard homework and doesn't give any extra credit or curves. He also isn't very helpful when you ask questions. I definitely wouldn't take his class again.

DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is a horrible prof who assigns a ton of hw and has at least one quiz every weekend, and by a ton of homework I mean over 100 problems weekly. He also makes his tests way harder than they need to be. I always get As and barley got a B in his class. He will tear your GPA and love of math apart. He is also rude and condescending.

Dr. Dunn is the worst teacher I have had since attending USC. He is rude, arrogant, and does not care about the students he teaches. He doesn't give study guides, does give a ton of homework, and the tests are extremely unlike what we did in class and what we did on the homework. Very rude during office hours as well. Don't take him.

Dunn is the reason I am a math major. It was the hardest class I've ever taken, but he took the time to make sure we all understood everything. He does cover proofs, unlike the other honors prof, but that actually really helped. He's hilarious and easy going, and office hours are great. I totally recommend.

Dr. Dunn is great. He really loves math and is overall just a cool guy. He doesn't spoon feed you the material, but if you ask questions he will take the time to explain it until you get it. He is a VERY tough grader on tests by only giving some partial credit. For those thinking about it, I do NOT recommend taking 142 during the summer.

Dr. Dunn's teaching style encourages his students to try to figure out concepts by themselves, which may work for some but was not great for me. He gives weekly quizzes which I appreciated. TONS of online homework (graded by completion). Tests are pretty tough but he grades fairly. Oh, and get ready to memorize some proofs :/

Dr. Dunn. He is not my favorite professor. He can be arrogant and rude. He expects students to pick up on topics immediately, barely explains at all and makes fun of those who ask questions. The homework is one way, the quizzes are another and the tests are another so you don't know what to expect. I hated this class.

Many professors are very knowledgeable and are able to abstract information to basic levels for students to understand. Dunn is not that kind of professor. He really expects you to understand super fast and does not explain things well. I got an A, but with lots of work. If you love calc A LOT this is your class; if not, I'd suggest another prof.

Dr. Dunn is amazing. He is super funny and incredibly smart. His class is definitely tough, but you really learn a lot if you put the work in. He is a great professor and super approachable outside the classroom. If you like Math I would strongly recommend taking his class. You have to go to class, but he is so great that you won't want to skip.

Scott Dunn did not make math 122 easy and this is the only class I have ever had to drop. He doesnt really make the material clear and his tests dont really match the lectures because he is not thorough in lecture, but is on tests and quizzes. The wiley plus is required, and will help if you do it, but I felt like i was teaching myself.

He lectures fast, it's difficult to pick up concepts and understand the material that quickly if you've never had calculus before. He teaches proofs, which is difficult. His tests are difficult, because you nee to understand the concepts. Quizzes are ok, they get easier as time goes. The homework is irrelevant, it's a lot of work for no reason.

I think Dr. Dunn was very good at explaining difficult concepts in Calculus. I think he's a really funny guy, but his class is definitely tough. Tons of online homework, I never got it all done . Also very tough grader on tests. Even though I ended up with a B, I feel like I really learned a lot in his class and will be well prepared for Calc 2.

Very hard professor. He doesn't care about his students what so ever. He is only there to show that he is smarter than everyone. Definitely do not take him if possible. The WORST professor I have had at Carolina. Very hard grader on test that don't reflect any of his lectures. You will have to teach the material to yourself. Some professors have a the gift of teaching, they are able to inspire and advance the knowledge of their students. This was not Dr. Dunn, he over complicated simple topics and gave no direction for tests. For my final Dr. Dunn told use "It would be cumulative and less than a hundred questions." I would not recommend taking this incompetent teacher

If you are looking for an easy A, I would reconsider taking this class with Dr. Dunn. If you do the work, go to tutoring, make study groups, and see Dr. Dunn during office hours, it's possible. Get ready to memorize some proofs and spend a few hours per week doing the online homework.

He does not care much for his students, their success, or whether they master (much less understand the material). He knows what he's teaching but goes VERY quickly and is not super approachable nor accessible if one asks for clarification. Thankfully, most everyone does poorly in his class so it was "curved"at the end. I would NOT recommend.

Only teacher who makes you do proofs for everything. Tests are way harder than classwork. He puts note outlines online, its easier to print them out and take notes on them. Much clearer and better than copying it all down.

Prof Dunn is probably the WORST professor I have had here at USC. He is snarky, rude and makes fun of you if you ask a question. He will put you on the spot in front of everyone. The tests are impossible even if you spend countless nights in the library studying your butt off. Its like he wants to see students fail. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!

He definitely makes you rock for your grade but he sets you up with a good foundation for Calc 2. Th only thing I did not enjoy were the proofs. If proofs don't help you learn, you may want to look at other professors. He does give lots of extra credit opportunities that really boost your grade and is very accessible outside of class.

I ignored the Rate My Professor ratings and I wish I wouldn't have. Overall, very poor teaching style. I had a friend who took the same class with a diff. professor and had no problem understanding concepts that I was struggling with due to Dr. Dunn's vague and confusing exams. It seems like he tries to trip you up. I would not recommend at all.

This class was by far the hardest math class I have ever taken. Very focused on proofs and the conceptual side of math but it makes the topics hard to understand because we didn't go over much application and had barely any practice with problems in class. The only practice we got was online homework that didn't correspond well with the test.

Dr. Dunn created a list of several mathematical "mistakes" unrelated to this class. He informed us that if on any quiz or even an exam, we forget and make these mistakes, he will just give us a zero on it. Period. I already hated math to begin with, and this prof. has caused me to be very insecure. He acts like we are dumb when we don't understand

Prof. Dunn is a good teacher. However, he can have sassy attitude that you have to get used to. If you pay attention in class and actually do the homework you can do well in this class. He likes when you write out justifications for answers. He asks a lot of hard questions in class and will just sit in silence until someone answers.

Dunn is much better than the reviews make him seem. He starts out the semester pretty tough but if you participate in class and work hard to be sure you understand the material, he's pretty reasonable. I ended with an A in the class and it was definitely not impossible. He can be a bit sassy but you'll get used to it.

Honestly, Dr. Dunn is a great professor. Everything he does if for a specific reason. Since this class if for Education majors, he tries to relate it as much as he can to the classroom. The class takes a LOT of hard work, but he does as much as he can to help you succeed. His personality takes getting used to, but overall great professor.

There are clearly people on here rating Dr Dunn who have never even taken one of his classes before. Dunn is an absolutely fantastic professor whose teaching style keeps students engaged and always gets work back in a timely manner. He grades fairly and keeps tests reasonably short and to the point. Show up, asks questions, and you'll do well.

Grades work timely and explains things in an understandable way (at least to me). The only thing is that he has a bad attitude sometimes -- he is very sassy. He wants his students to succeed but then again does not care about a student's personal life. DOESN'T allow for makeup quizzes/tests no matter the circumstance. Quizzes every week (Fridays).

Dr. Dunn was overall a good professor. His personality and style of teaching takes getting used to. He wants you to succeed. He can be a tough grader. I am not a math person at all, but thank goodness for the professor! It took me some time to get used to his lectures, but I caught on, and he goes through and makes sure everyone understands the material. The tests also aren't nearly as hard as you think they would be. It's exactly what you learn in class.

Great professor. Seriously one of the most fun math classes I've had, and when I left I feel like I know the subject. Spends a lot of time on visualization which really helped. HW was online and not that bad. Graded fairly with opportunity for extra credit here and there.

Dr. Scott seems sarcastic, but he cares a lot about his students. The 1st quiz is to meet with him so he can learn about you. His exams are moderately difficult but possible, and he gives several opportunities to help your grade, including homework, quizzes, and extra credit. He even let our class do test corrections for half back on one exam.

Dr Dunn is easy to get along with and it is obvious he loves what he does. He prepares you well for exams and his notes are digital which is nice. Homework is on mymathlab, which is just a nonsense program to begin with and he will not round your final grade. otherwise no complaints.

He was funny but didn't really take charge of the class. There was a lot of online homework but it helped for the weekly quizzes. The tests were sort of hit or miss but he honestly has your best interest and cares about the students. He wasn't the best at explaining things if you didn't understand and relied too much on students to help each other.

Dunn is relatively a good math professor. He taught me Discrete Math which became a hard class for me. He has weekly quizzes and homework so you have to keep up or your grade will fall. Online textbook required. No test or quizzes are multiple choice.

Dr. Dunn definitely knows his stuff. The class was super difficult, don't take him if you're looking for an easy A. He focuses a lot on theorems and proofs. He tries to get the class to work together to answer questions, rather than him answering them directly. He definitely wants you to understand the concepts. Do the practice problems, they help.

The greatest math teacher I have ever had. He makes you avoid rote memorization by just doing the small things and work that other teachers skip. You won't get through the quizzes by memorizing how to answer a specific question, however you will absolutely understand how to approach every single question if you listen and do the notes. Discrete math is not math-it's logic. Do the homework multiple times, re-work problems until you actually understand how to do them. Every question on the tests came from previous homework & quizzes( occur every week). DO THE HOMEWORK (it'll help you or hurt you). PAY ATTENTION to the first lesson, you need a good foundation, or you'll struggle.

Dr. Dunn was the best calc teacher I've had so far. He likes to have students help other students before he steps in to help, so make friends in class. He really wants his students to succeed, and can be tough, but he means well. He's also pretty chill, and understanding about missing class as long as you have a valid excuse. 10/10 would recommend

I took 374 with another professor and failed it. Conversely, I aced it with Dunn. Grades homework but also goes over it in class so it's actually very helpful. Has you partner up so you can talk through things with them in class, I thought it would suck but it was useful. Actually teaches you concepts himself rather than throwing a book at you.

I've taken both this class and the Discrete Mathematics class, both of them are quite similar in teaching style. Basically, if you learn more from just reading a textbook than doing tons of examples, this class will NOT be good for you. If, however, you get the most out of doing lots of examples with feedback, Dunn's classes are incredible.

Strange teaching style; small group discussion (isn't very useful, especially when discussing new material none of us are familiar with). Teaches proofs and expects you to memorize; covers some topics deeply that make up little of the exam (and the opposite, too). Weekly quizzes 2-3 questions 10 pts. Test corrections allowed when class did poorly.

Dr. Dunn's class was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. His lectures are beyond confusing, as he tends to focus more on theory as opposed to working examples. Dr. Dunn makes something hard like Calc 2 bearable. If you don't go to class, you won't do well. It's hard, but he works through a lot of problems and makes the patterns noticeable. This class was so hard and I hated it, but I'm glad Dunn was my prof. He is so good at explaining difficult concepts and he makes class interesting. There were weekly quizzes that weren't too hard and multiple exams. He's very lenient with grading, drops multiple assignments, and offers extra credit. If you need to take Calc II, take him.

I kind of hated this class, but Dunn is a good professor. It was not an easy A, and he wants you to figure out the math on your own before he explains it. Dr. Dunn has a great personality that doesn't make you dread going to his class. Because attendance is mandatory. His teaching style is showing each lesson on the board and doing a bunch of sample problems. he is also very by the book (in university rules standards).

Scott Dunn was a nice guy who genuinely seemed like he enjoys his job but his way of teaching was extremely confusing and unhelpful. Attendance was mandatory so I would often completely tune him out and teach myself the material. Mr. Dunn is a really chill professor and he makes the class interesting which is unheard of in a Calc class. You have a little over a week for every homework assignment and it can be turned in late but with a penalty. Tests are kinda hard but he reviews the whole class before. Just don't take it at 6:00 pm, worst mistake I've ever made.

Dunn is hands down my favorite prof. He somehow keeps you entertained while teaching you calculus and he is very laid back. He allows you to makeup any test or quiz you missed at the end of the year and posts your tests with a marked up pdf. The final is all questions from past tests. He is really bad at answering emails though.

Dunn was a good professor just boring. I took his class at 4:25 on Tuesday, Thursday and wanted to fall asleep. He posts all the notes on Blackboard after class and livestreams. He passes around an attendance sheet every day. Dunn also encourages class participation and if you or your class doesn't want to talk, he will wait until someone does.

I honestly don't understand the bad reviews. I took Dr. Dunn for Math 111 and Math 122 and we was my favorite math professor ever. The tests are all questions from the homework with different numbers, and he provides 10 points extra credit on every test. He won't try to mess you up. I barely studied for tests and was exempt from both finals.

Good professor! Had him for Math 111 and 122. He asks for class participation and will wait for students to answer questions. Homework for each chapter done in a week is due every Tuesday (normally 3 assignments). Homework is harder than lecture but reflects what you'll be tested on. I struggle with math a lot as it tends to be my hardest subject. He didn't offer any office hours, didn't explain things well and made them more difficult. If I have one thing to tell you, its to NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!! I studied so much and there would be trick questions and stuff we never even learned on the exam. Participation matters! He teaches based on how much the class asks questions. There were 2-4 Wiley + assignments/week and 13 quizzes. Lowest 3 quizzes were dropped. There were 3 exams and a final, the exams were decently hard and not always like the homework. However, the final will replace your lowest exam grade; he does want you to pass!

Honestly, he isn't the worst professor, but I didn't like his teaching style. He would have other students in class do practice problems, which would make the material more confusing. He only takes the 10 highest quiz scores and swaps your lowest test grade with the final exam grade. He is a funny guy and does want you to pass.
