nice guy, take really good notes, regurgitate for test
i have never had a more condescending, arrogant professor...he is awful
designs tests so students cannot do well
Take good notes and memorize them. If you miss class, get the notes!
Just study notes no need for book, nice guy
he's so nice! hes really clear on everything, tests are exactly from the notes
ROCK CLASS..... not soo bad
Will help if willing to work. Slackers rated badly. They can kiss my....
he is so great!!...this class is awesome...everyone should take it!
Great teacher, very helpful
Hard tests but you can do it if willing to work. For a rock class - not so bad
the first tests are hard, but if you take good notes you should be ok. no attendance policy, nice guy, just learn the notes.
Awesome class. You learn so much cool stuff. You don't need the book, you can just study the notes. Just try and it'll be easy
This guy is cool. An young professor that acts young and is friends with his students is cool. Anyone that says bad things about him is probably dumb and they had a negative attitude coming in. Favors girls? Um...No. Great Prof., hard class, interesti
Very enthusiastic! Knows his geology...sometimes dry material though. Tries to make it exciting.
Great guy, enthusiastic, funny, easy to talk to, real life examples in work, extremely helpful and willing to work with you, tests aren't too bad - read a little, take good notes, go to class, and participate!
one of top three profs in geology department. connects with students, always willing to help. perfect organization, for once a professor who plans his lectures thouroughly. take all his courses, he's the man. blaze on scotty
Scott Eaton is one of those professors that makes dry subjects somewhat interesting...attempts to make students understand using objects such as slinkies. Definately worth taking!!
Coolest professor. He makes the subject really interesting and keeps the class laughing all the time. If you need to take a science take this class, he's very helpful.
Hes nice but notes are too general compared to what is on test. Too much effort needed for a gened class.
Lab tests are utter hell!!! Tests are easy if you go to class...Wouldn't recommend unless you have no other options for gen-ed science
Amazing guy, makes geology fun and tests are fair, just go to class, get the notes, and study them before tests. Lab on the other hand is rough, really have to study for that and teach yourself. Eaton is great, hard not to like the guy!
Dr. Eaton is a great guy, very enthusiastic about the subject matter. Tests can be pretty specific but its straight from the class notes, so just go to class and you should do fine. If you are going to take this class, I recommend Eaton.
I'm terrible at science and so far I have an A. THe tests are wicked easy if you're responsible and study your stuff. You should have a thourough knowledge of the material before dreaming of getting an A. He's funny in a dry, nerdy sort of way. He makes studying rocks kind of interesting.
dr. E is awesome, totally adorable. he really wants you to understand the material, super helpful and really nice. i would recommend him to anyone, even if you suck at science. just go to class and take notes (test are from notes) lab tests can be hard, go to study sessions
great professor and a great class. eaton makes the information really easy to understand. tests are strictly from notes and are very fair- don't use the textbook at all. lab tests are a bit harder, but you just have to study for them more. overall a GREAT class - take it if you can!
my fav class, great prof. who really makes it interesting and if you go to class it's easy. you dont really have to read. tests based on notes, but do take the time to study they can be difficult. no hw, labs are easy and fun. take the class you'll enjoy it!
Difficult class but dr. eaton made it really good and easy to learn. most stuff is takehome, but on honor code... the lecture notes give all the answers pretty much though. i learned a lot in this class
Nice buns!! Expect to be a college student, not a slacker. This applies to ALL classes.
It was fun studying cracks and rocks with Dr. Eaton.
I must be honest: I switched my major because of Eaton. My warning would be DO NOT miss any field labs! I missed a weekend lab b/c I was a bridesmaid in my dad's wedding. Penalty: write a 12 page annotated bibiography on his dissertation!
So nice, you'll think he's joking. The gentlest person in the world.keeps class interesting, the material just requires a lot of memorization.don't bother with the textbook, the notes are more than thorough enough, and the powerpoints are onlilne.the lab tests are difficult, but the t.a.'s, review sessions, and the office hours are extremely helpful
Best teacher I've had so far. Lecture is always interesting and his enthusiasm towards the subject definitely is apparent. He is eager to help and is very understanding as long as you talk to him about it. I wouldn't advise missing class as you go over a lot of information during lecture, but it's interesting and he's quite entertaining.
Eaton is a great teacher and a nice person. Go to Hydro class, review your notes, take advantage of office hours, and ask questions if you don't understand - do this, and you'll do well. He has a way of knowing how to communicate the material so that students can get it...take his class!!
Dr. Eaton is one intelligent guy, with a clear passion for the subject. He is extremely helpful, and make an attempt to get to know him - it will help you in the long run. Although attendance isn't mandatory, try your best to be in class on a regular basis - a lot of material is covered. Don't bother with the textbook. The guy's a fratstar.
Easiest lab and he actually makes it interesting. If you miss class or just don't pay attention the study sessions are enough to get an A on the test. Also he's dreamy so that helps
Fantastic teacher. Such a cutie and really is passionate about geology. He doesn't take attendance but go to class, listen and take notes and you'll get an A. His tests come directly from what he talks about in class. Don't bother buying the textbook, mines still in the plastic and I got an A.
Eaton is a fantastic teacher and has an obvious love for the subject, but his tests are harder than you would expect. Go to class and write down everything he says. 2 tests and a final, don't bother buying the textbook
Easily one of the best Geology professors I've had so far in college. He makes the material easy to learn and understand, he's understanding, and the nicest guy you could ever meet. I went through a lot this semester and he helped me with all the homework and helped prepare me for the tests. Just go to class and read the book and you'll be fine.
GREAT professor! Class was rather slow, hardly went into detail at all. Could have done more and done it much faster. BUT, he's great about helping you do more if you want to. However, THIS IS NOT JUST A GENED! This is the PREREQ for geology majors. SO, if you're taking it for the gened, go take GSCI. He does much better with more majors in class.
Very nice guy, completely approachable. Encourages questions, and is always helpful. Passionate about Geology. His tests were annoying, don't take them lightly. Attendance is not mandatory, but he will give pop quizzes occasionally to encourage you to show up.
Dr. Eaton is one of the most wonderful professors I've ever had. He is very nice, and it is very clear what material is needed for the tests. I am an Earth Science major, so it was required that I take this class. If you go to all of the classes, pay attention, and study your notes you will be just fine!
Eaton is a great teacher, he really tries to bring in humor to the subject of rocks. He's really good at explaining things and will always be willing to work with you if you have to miss a class or arrive late.
Awesome professor, he really loves his subject and tries his best to keep students engaged in class. Tests can be tough. Do go to his classes because they will help you a lot as you will never need the book.
Prof. Eaton's class keeps you entertained with quite interesting facts, but tests are hard. He gives several pop quizzes, but does not take attendance. There were zero homework assignments for the year. His lectures are needed so you can understand the Powerpoints, because they only have a few works and pictures. *I did not take him for lab.
Eaton makes a dry subject fun and interesting. His lectures can be pretty boring but overall he's a really cool guy. If you can take him for your lab too, do it. He's a semi easy grader so if you show up and take notes you'll be good.
Makes lectures very entertaining and interesting. Overall great professor and great guy.
Dr. Eaton is one of the nicest people. He's an amazing professor. Very clear in his explanations and easy to understand.
Really nice guy and really passionate about geology. He makes lectures fun and interesting. Tests can be tough because there are fill in the blank sections but if you study a few hours the night before you should be fine. The lab portion of the class should also help. The textbook isnt required.
The first test is to walk around the room and label a ton of different kinds of rocks and different things about them. I did bad on that exam. The second one was significantly easier. There are in-class assignments and two tests. Dr. Eaton is great, though. Super nice and helpful. This class also has TA's to help you if he is busy.
He takes Gen Eds a little bit too serious, definitely teaches for his geology major students.
Eaton is such a sweet guy. He's really willing to help whenever he can. His assignments in lab were kind of annoying and time consuming though. He doesn't really explain things well for non geology majors, which is frustrating if that stuff doesn't come to you naturally.
Eaton is probably the coolest professor I have had yet at JMU. The guy went to JMU himself back in the day so he's not some boring professor. He canceled class a lot which was awesome. Tests aren't easy, but they aren't bad. He gave out about 8 pop quizzes, and drops the lowest one. If you want an A in this class you gotta work it.
Great guy, just don't use your phone in there and watch out for pop quizzes. They are pretty easy though and always a few questions dealing with the most recent material.
Lots of lengthy, time-consuming in-class assignments, but they prepare you for the two tests that you'll have. First test was walking around the room and labeling/answering questions about a ton of different rocks. Around 80 questions. Second test was significantly harder for me: a thick packet of questions about EVERYTHING else we learned + math.
Not an approachable professor at all. No one feels comfortable asking questions in class because it is always followed by a insulting comment about your ability to learn. Makes things way too complicated and always directs things at his "engineering and geol" students leaving out the majority of the class. Awful class awful teaching style.
Scott Eaton is a nice guy, but I wouldn't take him for a gen ed. You have to put in SO MUCH WORK just to get a solid B. His tests are extremely lecture heavy and specific. So if you doze off for even a second, you'd probably get 5 points off your test.
Dr. Eaton is a great person, not my favorite professor though. Lectures are very boring and the exact same all semester. You miss class, you completely ruin your chances on doing well for that section of the test because his powerpoints are the LEAST helpful thing ever. Theres more pictures of him from the 1990s than useful information.
Not an easy class, but take GOOD notes and study a lot for each of the tests. All short answer, but he gives a lot of partial credit. The average test grade is in the lower C range. If you miss class and try to read powerpoints, good luck. They're basically just pictures of his friends. Field trips can be really awesome, but DRESS TO GET DIRTY/WET!
Dr. Eaton provides critical leadership and has a gift for effective mentorship. He possesses a proven record of successful experience both in and out of the classroom. As such he is demanding, yet fair which means he expects his students to come with the proper attitude for learning and professionalism one would expect within the workforce.
We had 3 tests and some small pop quizzes; these are easy if youve been paying attention and are straight from the notes. Hes very accommodating. When class shifted online, he did a great job of recording lectures and having webEx meetings to discuss any questions. He has great lectures, but you have to pay close attention and take good notes.
One of the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are formatted in a way that makes the material easy to learn. Interesting/practical labs. More so than other professors, he focuses on what this material will be used for post-graduation i.e job related things.
Really cares about the material. Easy coursework. Do the writing assignments and you will get at least a B. Quizzes are fantastic and easy to do. Lots of extra credit. Literally nothing bad to say. If you can't get an A in this class, you can't get an A in any class. You learn a lot and it doesn't take too much time. You can put vids at 2x speed.
Dr. Eaton was an incredible teacher. Although I wasn't a geology major or minor student, I learned so much by interacting with him a bunch during field trips and even outside of class. He is extremely knowledgable and an invaluable resource. If you don't understand, ask a question, the fear of feeling dumb is holding you back from truly thriving.
Took this class over summer 4 week session. A good amount of work for each topic but very straightforward. Even online labs were easy to understand and tests were right from the notes. Definitely doable online. Professor Eaton is a really nice guy and definitely enjoys teaching geology.
Great prof. Is understandable and trys to make it easy on you, especially when other classes are getting tough. He is great and trys to have fun in class.
Amazing and knowledgeable professor. He makes his lectures easy to understand and is great at teaching in a very personal way where it can be somewhat of a conversational style lecture. Tests are brutal and detailed. He makes sure you know and understand the information in every possible way. You will have to study and earn your grade.
I took Dr. Eaton's class for a one week lab credit during the Winter 2021 session and it could not have been a better experience. He perfectly explains how to do everything and is incredibly patient no matter the problem, and is possibly the most level-headed professor I've met. His voice is also very calm and soothing, can't recommend enough.
I took the same one week course as the person right below and I agree 100% with everything they said. He is the most helpful and caring professor I have had at JMU. Any problem you have he will solve it no matter how long it takes. He wants everyone to do well!
Look, Dr. Eaton is a caring, intelligent and helpful professor. To him, students are not just names on an attendance sheet. Dr. Eaton wants to see everyone succeed. Like a true Eagle Scout, when I made mistakes he never patronized, instead, he offered a helping hand. Go to class; his lectures me be dry but his dad jokes never miss. Thanks, Dr. E
Dr.E is very organized and considerate professor. This course was challenging due to excel, Google earth, and uscgs water website used for data due to using it for the first time. We had 1-2 assignments per day in the one week course. The good thing is he gives extra credit so if you do the work and ask questions you will pass. Also no tests.
We used Excel, Google Earth, and USGS for assignments. No tests or quizzes. Dr. E def cares for his students but I wish he answered questions more clearly bc some assignment directions were a little difficult to follow imo. There was some math involved but nothing too bad. He also gave us extra credit. Not a tough grader - he gives partial credit.
His lectures were interesting however slides werent too helpful. He is soft spoken, but engage in class and ask questions. He is sweet and funny. He is passionate about JMU and geology. Talks a lot about his research. His exams and quizzes are very very specific. Exams are fill in the blank, matching.. Def study the material to do well on exams.
Scott is a nice person but he takes this class way too seriously. If you miss a class youll fail the exam, his powerpoints arent good at all and you have to take GOOD notes in class to do decent in his class. I got a c+ which is ridiculous for a Gen-ed. He never answers emails and isn't flexible at all. His exams are horrible.
Funny guy who's clearly passionate about his subject. Make sure to go to the TA review sessions for the lab exams- those are important
He just gets it
Eaton is such a great guy. He really wants students to succeed and does what he can to help us understand the material. It is an easy lab, but you do have to try to get good grades. The weekly assignments are simple enough, but the tests require studying and going to his review sessions. You work with a partner for the whole semester.
Dr Eaton is an incredible professor. I don't think I've ever had a professor that cares as much about his students as he does. The soils class is definitely difficult, but it isn't impossible and he is always available for help outside of class. If you have the opportunity to take a class with him, DO IT :)
I've taken 3 classes with this man and each time has been incredible. He is a great lecturer, but the slides are vague so make sure to write down what he says. He is very kind and applies things to the real world well. It is take him if you can - you won't regret it.
Professor tries to make it as difficult as possible for you to do well. Would not recommend to anyone just trying to get gen ed credit. Class is only based on lecture and your own note-taking. If you miss class, there is no way to catch up because notes posted on canvas are "purposely written to make no sense unless you were in class taking notes".
If you're looking for an easy gen-ed to take, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Dr. Eaton never answered my questions clearly and would instead reply with rhetorical questions (which was not slightly helpful). He acted like every student in there was a Geology major and did not care to make the material more understandable. TAs are the only reason I passed.
I felt as though prof. eatons professional skills were lacking. He would have an attitude with his students, was unclear about what was going to be on exams, and was not the most helpful when you would ask questions, often times getting annoyed when one was asked. I relied on the TAs for the entirety of this class as they seemed to be more helpful.
He looks very nice and approachable but that is far from the truth. Makes fun of students when asking questions, goes on life tangents, must be in class to know topics for exam. Would give negative stars if I could. Throws temper tantrums with any class disruption. Would rather fight a polar bear than take this class again.
If you're looking for a fair and supportive professor, Scott is not the one. Instead of having a learning environment, they seem more focused on making students' lives as difficult as possible. He nitpicks over everything, and he seems to enjoy calling students out for there mistakes in class and does nothing to help. Worst professor I've had.
Professor Eaton explains things clearly and answers questions during lecture with as much details as needed. I think the only issue is how test-heavy this course is. He grades tests very strictly and the tests can be difficult. My recommendation, go to every lecture and take plenty of notes. Overall, Id say he's a pretty good professor.
Dr. Eaton takes pride in his lectures to embarrass students and question their listening ability when they ask clarifying questions. He seems offended that students would take his class for a gen ed and enjoys taking it out on his classes. He gives constant pop quizzes and takes several weeks to grade 45-question short-answer tests.
I personally didn't find Dr. Eaton to be unbearable like some of the other reviews. You HAVE to show up, though. If you don't, the slides have no words on them, and you'll have no idea what's going on. The tests are challenging, but are honestly based off what he says during lecture. If people are skipping, he'll institute pop quizzes.
His exams are lecture heavy and usually any format. His lectures are usually boring and if you talk or use your phone, you receive a yellow/red card as a warning. He takes the class too seriously and doesn't tolerate absences. He went from take home online quizzes to pop quizzes because no one showed up to class as he had no attendance policy.
His lectures are awful and boring, but you have to go to them because his slides are completely useless. If people don't come to class he'll start having pop quizzes out of spite. Acts like this is a major class and not a gen ed. This is reflected on the tests which are way tougher than normal gen eds. Most of your grade is just the tests as well.
Big thing is show up to class, he likes to find ways to make it harder for people who skip class. Slides are vague but if you listen to what he says and take decent notes you should be fine. He is pretty strict about no phones/talking too loud during lectures. But overall he seems like a good dude who likes teaching the class.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. His exams are impossible and he treats the class like a major class instead of a gen ed. He starts by giving online take home quizzes, then randomly switches to in class pop quizzes. Never take this class unless you love learning about rocks.
He's a nice guy, but doesn't check his emails so talk to him in person. You can skip class but if you do it too much he starts doing surprise quizzes and you'll start getting zeros. You really have to pay attention to his lectures and take good notes (specifically on the names of structures) because the tests are very detailed.
Exams are a huge part of your grade. If you go to the lectures and take diligent notes and ask questions, and study at least a couple of days before exams, you'll be fine. Don't try to be slick around him, because I saw him take two people's exams off their desk in the middle of class over the semester.
For someone who preaches about being proffesional and reliable, Dr. Eaton will wait until the last possible minute to grade projects and other assignments. He isn't mean but he can definitely come off as deragatory and demeaning if you aren't the exact type of student he expects you to be. If you're a geo major you'll be fine.
