Excellent teacher! The class is pretty easy, and you learn a ton. It is about the best I can think of so take it! He gives 2 tests and a final, a short presentation that is really nothing, and a 10 pop-quizzes of which only 7 count. Just read and be fine
Brother Esplin is a great teacher. He makes the course really interesting and makes it easy to learn. His tests are easy as long as you pay attention in class and he is genuinely interested in finding answers to questions (related to the class or not).
He came and taught for Bro. Robinson and I was astounded! I enjoyed his lecture so much that I attended his 8 o'clock class even though I was never registered for it. He has a great love for the gospel and you leave his class feeling the same.
Great teacher, highly recommended. He lets you know exactly what will be on the tests- and you can present your point of view on questions you don't think were fair, etc. One of the best religion teachers I've had.
He is a very good religion teacher. The best I have had so far. Very spiritual, but makes you laugh too. The tests are pretty easy if you pay attention and read the assignments. Outside class assignments not hard at all. Highly Recommended
Class is all history, no doctrine. Tests are a cinch, quizzes are simple. Wouldn't reccomend Esplin if you prefer getting new or more info in class, if you prefer a spiritual class, or if you get bored by countless historical facts. You can definitely tell he just came from being a seminary teacher.
Best religion professor that I have ever had. He cares about his students, and has a great balance of history and doctrine. Grading is very fair. He tries to apply the D&C to college life and does a great job at it. If you're looking for a great D&C professor, Brother Esplin is the man.
Excellent teacher...very exciting
Very good teacher. Balances the church history with the teachings of the Doctrine and Covenants. Is very knowledgable and willing to help. Has a great sense of humor. The only downside is many times we skim through sections and don't really hit on doctrines. More information than spirituality. I would take any class from him.
Just remember to do your reading for the random quizzes. If you take notes on each section, person, and place at the exam review session and study the section names then you will ace the exam.
I really enjoyed this class! Esplin is a good lecturer and I learned a lot. The random quizzes were easy, but the tests were sometimes difficult. You know how vague the wording of questions from D&C tests can get!
Fantastic teacher. He makes it very clear what is on his tests, and the only other thing you need to do is an in-class presentation which really isn't much of a presentation at all. This is an easy course. Not hard to get an A
Wonderful teacher! Really helps you apply the scriptures to your life. If you do the reading at all you'll be fine on all of the in class quizzes. Not a tough class, definitely worth taking!
AMAZING!! loved the class! esplin is very interested in his students and helps them any way he can. quizzes was a piece of cake. doctrine and application was very insightful! take from him for sure!
This professor is more than great, he is wonderful! He goes out of the way to make sure that you understand. He also knows his scriptures, plus he can randomly recite church stories that relate to what he is teaching or whatever you ask of him. Great teacher I highly recommend him! Tests are pretty easy and quizes are nothing to worry about.
Bro. Esplin is great! He is like a great fountain of knowledge, and even humble about it! Very respectful and if you ask a question (even if you think it might be a dumb one) he will always make it seem valid and answer as best as he can. I really look up to him as a person and teacher.
Excellent individual and excellent teacher. An A is possible, but you'll have to work for it unless you're already very familiar with D&C. Don't expect to walk through the class easily, you can't. I do highly recommend him and his class.
Brother Esplin is a fabulous professor! He is great at applying principles from the scriptures to our lives, and teaching us to do the same. The tests and pop quizzes are pretty easy if you do the reading.
Show up to class, it's worth your time. Bro Esplin is really in tune with the spirit and has a genuine interest in making sure his students are succeeding in his class.
Easiest class ever. This is a religion class that won't hurt your GPA. Take him if his section is open.
He's is a good teacher. I had the night class and he made the quizzes really easy because he was worried that we weren't doing well. He was also really good about giving a study guide that acutally was helpful for the test. He was respectful when people in class asked dumb questions or made useless comments. If you can get in his class, do it.
I love this man! He is incredibly knowledgable but is still so humble. He's downright hilarious, but doesn't let that detract from the Spirit. He focuses on how the doctrine of the D&C can help us, which is nice. He really wants to help his students, too, so if you're having any trouble (in or out of class) just go talk to him! He's fantastic!
The class is really easy. Quizzes are based on if you read or not. His lectures are a little boring and he talks really fast and rambles on. A lot more history than doctrine.
I learned a lot from Brother Esplin and plan on taking the 2nd half of D&C from him as well. It was an easy class overall, but I really liked his style of teaching. Short quiz every class (I had him once a week), just do the reading. Also a one page essay, two midterms, and a final.
Bro Esplin is great. He class is really easy. The quizes basically just see if you did the reading, no tough details. Very few assignments, two midterms and a final. He gives study guides that are pretty good for the tests. His class is pretty good, He gives a lot of history but keeps it spiritual as well.
Easy class as long as you went, did the readings and took the quizzes. Requires a weekly journal that is EASY points. Tests were semi hard and he doesn't make them easy. When 1/2 of our class had A's on the first test, he purposely made the next two harder. Good teacher, easy assignments, don't worry.
Scott Esplin is awesome and he loves what he is teaching which makes it so enjoyable. He is funny and gets really excited while teaching. You should definately enroll in his class.
Brother Esplin is such an amazing professor! I learned a lot from his class, but his tests are semi-hard. Otherwise it is a really enjoyable class that I loved a lot!
Bro. Esplin is the man! He is a genius when it comes to church history and the Doctrine and Covenants. He brings amazing insights into every class and applies them to us. He is the best religion professor I've had at BYU! Take him!
Absolutely amazing teacher. He really tries to demonstrate the applicability D&C has to us right now. Very friendly and helpful. Study guides are perfect outlines for the test. Take this teacher you will learn so much!
Great Doctrine and Covenants teacher. Have 3 exams throughout the semester and one small project where you basically gather information on 1 section and tell the class about it on the day you cover that section. He really knows what he's talking about and is a great teacher covering both history and doctrine. Love the class would take again.
One thing that I have to mention in giving a review of Bro. Esplin, is that he is the most concerned and helpful teacher that I've ever had at BYU. He goes over the test as a whole class after and any questions that you have, he will answer them. He is concerned about individuals and tries to provide a spiritual environment. GREAT GUY AND TEACHER!
Amazing teacher! He's a great guy and really cares about the students and wants them to succeed outside of class as well.
Professor Esplin is a great man who dilligently prepares and teaches to the best of his ability. He truly cares about the needs of the students; sometimes he gets off on random stories, but they make the class interesting and lets just say that nothing can be predictable. I enjoy the spirit felt also.
Brother Esplin knows the D&C SO well! He knows the doctrine so well and answers all of the random questions that people throw at him and has quotes and scriptures off the wazoo to back him up! He's also a very straight forward teacher and will tell you exactly what's on the tests- word for word sometimes. You get graded on doing the daily readin
Great religion teacher. Does not teach his own opinions (or makes it very clear when he presents his own ideas, and does not hold you to them). Tests are multiple choice, based on objective historical background and what is actually in the text (again, not his opinion). Before each test, he gives out a study guide and goes over the material.
I don't want to say anything negative about other teachers, but brother Esplin is definetely the best religion professor at BYU. He is very knowlegable, he has the spirit in his class, and what's the most important thing - he truly cares of students. I enjoyed the class very much and highly recommend it to everyone.
Brother Esplin is such a good teacher! I learned so much and it wasn't even hard. I had never really appreciated the Doctrine and Covenants before, but I do now! I strongly recommend Brother Esplin.
Best religion teacher on campus! I loved the class and learned a ton. I would recommend Prof. Esplin for anyone to take. But sign up quick because his classes are always the first to fill up.
Brother Esplin is an amazing teacher. Being in his class is uplifting, I feel so enriched after every lesson. I learned more in his brief summary of the 1st half of the D&C then I did in my whole class devoted to that subject. He's great, you should take his class.
Incredible, incredible man! I loved this class, and Brother Esplin's style. He taught with the spirit, had minimal homework and never gave us busy work. His exams, and the class overall, was very easy if you actually went to class and paid attention--which wasn't hard to do because his lectures were always great!
great guy and all that jazz (he really is awesome) Issues: no possibility for EC. 94% A. So basically don't mess up on anything. It's really not that hard though. My only complaints is that he talks super fast. i can't blame him though, he knows everything EVER about the D and C.
The best teacher and class, period!!!
Brother Esplin was a very fair teacher. His class was designed for everyone to get at least a B, without taking up a ton of time. His lectures were fascinating and he was always willing to take extra time to help his students.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this class and Brother Esplin. Every class period is so interesting and although class is mandatory I always found myself wanting to go. The tests are simple and fair and as long as you pay attention in class you will do great. I would take any class from Esplin...he is FANTASTIC :-)
He is a GREAT teacher and the biggest sweetheart. if you come up to ask him for almost anything he will help you out. it is an easy A and there is one presentation but it is no big deal at all. one thought paper where everyone gets a 100% if you follow the guide lines. I learned so much and he makes the class very interesting. TAKE HIM!
Easy class. Takes no critical thought, as the assignments are very simple and the exams just test on how well you payed attention and took notes in class. I feel like I learned some interesting random factoids about church history but that's about it. Class would probably be better if the professor required some actual writing/thinking on exams.
Best religion professor I have ever had. Amazing teacher- spirit filled classes without any fake crying! He really is the sincerest and best professor I have ever had.
Took him Spring 2009. This guy has nailed how a religion class should be-- no giant packet, just interesting, applicable talks. Easy, intriguing, spiritual assignments. Understands what it's like to be a college student! Only some of his tests had questions that were out of the blue, but I always got A's anyways.
Brother Esplin was one of the most amazing teachers I have had at BYU. I looked forward to going to his class every day. He knows so much about D&C and he makes everything interesting and clear. His tests are not hard at all if you go to class and use the study guide he gives. Take D&C from him if you can-he is incredible and I'll miss his class
I enjoyed the lectures, and brother esplin is a good guy, but the tests were harder than they needed to be. he asks about a lot of specifics that you will never need or want to know unless you plan on teaching religion. the easiness rating for this professor is deceptively high.
Amazing teacher and amazing man. Awesome guy with high character and very humble. You can tell he truly loves what he teaches. I wouldn't call this class easy, you should study relatively hard, but every lecture he gave was very uplifting and enlightening.
his class is amazing. if you go to class and take good notes and study them you will do fine. he is one of my favorate religion teachers at byu so far. take his class you won't regret it.
He's a GREAT teacher. Loves what he's teaching and class is always a pleasure. I love that he doesn't teach from his slide show at all. Most interesting and engaging lectures I've ever had. Also, his tests are very straightforward. He tells you what will be on them and what to study. Only one essay. GET HIM if you can.
Brother Esplin is amazing. The end. Hands down my favorite class all semester. Very straightforward, very well-read, and a very fair grader, I always feel good after his class. He has a story for everything and knows how to blend humor and spirituality. Take this class!
He is one of my favorate religion teachers. His lectures and very interesting, and his tests are very straightforward,If you go to class, and study your notes you will do fine, loved his class, he is the best
I loved brother esplin class. His lectures were very engaging, does not he uses a powerpoint, but mostly for quotes and does not rush through the class period to get through every single powerpoint, test easy if go to class, one 5 page paper, but he is a fair grader and it is very eas, take him, he is the best!!!
Super Easy! I love this guy! You have a five page paper (but it's really easy). You also have about 10 quizzes over the course of the semester... so do the reading. Tests are easy if you just go to class (but if you study in the least bit you're guaranteeing yourself an A or A-).
first time teaching NT in a long time. still quite knowledgeable. I feel like I learned a lot and I enjoyed going to class. 4 papers and 3 tests (summer term), very fair. stays after to answer questions. I liked him. didn't love him for a few reasons (repeats himself a ton, a little hyperactive, sometimes a pushover) but I don't regret taking class
Brother Esplin Rocks!! He's such an awesome, nice guy who truly cares that all of his students should understand the material. If you're taking a religion, and you can get him, do it! He's pretty easy with the quizzes as long as you've done the reading, but study hard for the tests with the review he gives you!
He's the best! Teaches interesting doctrine, not the kind of teacher who makes you memorize useless dates and facts about church history. It sounds cheesy - but I loved the spirit he brought to class. Awesome quotes and stories. Take him if you can for D&C
He might think he know a lot about the D&C but in reality his main focus for the class is on the dates and time. His test are a lot harder than they need to be. To one class he said, "I hope some student fail so that I can give more A's." Obviously cares more about his teacher tenure than his students.
Brother Esplin is an excellent teacher. He really cares about the students and will take time to help you understand whatever is unclear to you. He tells you ahead of time what will be on the tests and really helps prepare you for them. He teaches both the history and doctrine, as both are important. I would recommend him to anyone.
I learned a lot in Esplin's class. He is way fun, engaging, and knows a lot. However, I struggled on his tests. I did the work I was supposed to and studied, but it felt like there was a lot of material not covered in class.
Brother Esplin is the best religion professor I have had thus far in my BYU experience. Attendance is mandatory (but it should be, shouldn't it?). You'll learn the history behind D&C, giving context to the revelations. Your testimony will be strengthened. You'll feel the Spirit without having it spoon-fed like in Seminary or EFY. Highly recommended
Old Testament. Easiest religion course I've ever taken. Attendance is mandatory and easy quizzes are given in class. No homework aside from reading and a journal entry once a week. 2 tests and a final with a very high class average (90ish). Nice guy and respectful of opinions different from his own, which is unique in the religion department.
he's a good professor. Tests had mostly easy questions but some q's felt like random details. I was surprised by how high test avg's were. This class didn't exactly rock my world but it was still good.
Great teacher. I really learned a lot in this class. Discussions were well organized but he wasn't afraid to stray from them to answer questions or go into more detail. Tests weren't too difficult-though there were some questions about specific details-all multiple choice.
Brother Esplin genuinely cares about his students. He will make himself available to you. He actually understands that this class won't be your top priority in life, and he knows how to teach the subject to college students. He tells you a lot of the exam questions in class if you just go. The class quizzes are once a week and are pretty easy.
Highly recommended! Not a difficult class but I still felt like I learned a lot. Very much enjoyed class periods. Course entails weekly readings/journal entries, 1 short paper (analyze one section), 2 tests and the final, all multiple choice. Excellent at leading and encouraging discussions. Full of interesting stories, relates doctrine to us.
Take D&C from him if you can! I loved coming to class and I learned so much about the D&C. He's very kind and willing to work with you on anything. It wasn't a hard class, but I still learned tons!
Bro. Esplin is an excellent teacher, answers questions respectfully and brings the Spirit into every lesson. Is a very captivating teacher. Highly recommended!
Excellent class. Brother Esplin really cares about his students. Tests are somewhat challenging, but I'd definitely recommend Bro Esplin.
I love Brother Esplin! I was unsure about taking the second half of the old testament but he made it come alive for me. I was excited to go to every class. All you have to do to get an A is attend every class, work through each study guide he gives you for exams and final (very easy), read before class and write two short essays. I learned a ton!
I loved Brother Esplin! He has a clear passion for the D&C and was able to share it very effectively. Class isn't too hard, just stay caught up on readings, study the study guide that he gives you, pay attention to when he says "If I asked you this on a test..." because those questions are always on the exam! Very good teacher.
Brother Esplin is great! The class isn't too hard at all, the tests are really straight-forward (as long as you went to class and know the study guides). He is really helpful and very personable and real. He really implemented the suggestions students had from the mid-course evaluation. Great combination of spiritual and academic knowledge of D&C.
My problem with this class is that instead of testing on doctrine he tested on facts ONLY (names, dates, etc.). It made reading the scriptures feel like homework. Although he's a very nice person and had some good lecture material, I got very little out of his class spiritually.
Brother Esplin is a nice guy, but I wasn't in love with his class. Even though there isn't a ton of homework, the tests are pretty hard and I spent tons of time studying for them, but got the worst grade of my semester in his class.
Im a Junior @ BYU and he hands down has been my favorite professor in every aspect. Loved the class. Wish he taught more classes. I recommend him to everyone!
My favorite religion professor at BYU. No busy work, but tests do test your knowledge (got around 90% on all three with about 2.5 hours studying for each). Fun, intelligent, helpful, caring, positive, spiritual.
Esplin is such a great professor! He knows the D&C like the back of his hand and really wants his students to do well. No useless memorization or busy work, just learning the history and stories in the book. He truly wants you to do well and is very understanding of student's crazy lives. Go to class, read and take notes, and you're good to go!!
Stellar! Knows what he is talking about. He is a motor mouth but has funny stories and insights to share. Tests are not bad at all, just really go through the study guide and listen to his obvious clues in class. Pop quizzes every week and only three tests. Weekly journal entries and some readings that aren't that helpful. TAKE FROM ESPLIN!
Brother Esplin is seriously THE BEST religion teacher I have ever encountered. He truly knows the material and loves what he does. He helps you succeed, understands that we are busy college students, and really brings the spirit to take. TAKE FROM ESPLIN!!!
Take Brother Esplin's class! I loved him. He has a love for the Doctrine & Covenants and is an excellent teacher. He is funny, and his lectures are always interesting. He grades easily and there is enough easy homework to boost your grade. If you attend class and listen, he will tell you lots of test answers. Study for the tests, though!!
He's the best! I learned so much in this class. I felt like I learned new things about the history that really helped, but more importantly I learned more about the doctrine in D&C, it was so great. He really cares about his students, and wants everyone to have their questions answered, and to do well. BEST.
I guess this class has changed. 1/3 of the class failed his midterm, and his study guides are vague/useless. He's a wonderful person, very understanding if you need to miss class, but tests are ridiculous. His midterm was the lowest grade I've ever received on a test in 4 years of college. Pick his brain, talk to him, but don't take his class.
Esplin understand what a religion class should look like at BYU. I learned so much but this class didn't take too much effort outside of class besides reading the D&C. He is funny, kind and insightful. I would definitely recommend Esplin!
Honestly this class was not my favorite, Professor esplin is a nice guy, just he does not teach that good. He was all over the place, and ask questions in class and no one would know what he was talking about. His tests are absolutely dumb. He tests you on worthless facts and on the correct wording of verses. I learned nothing from him.
Brother Esplin is by far my favorite religion professor at BYU. He is down to earth and definitely relatable. You do have to work for your grade. There is a quiz every class and some of the test questions can be challenging. The work is well worth it. If you are looking to really gain something from your religion class then Esplin is the guy.
I've completed the required religion credits and looking back over all the religion professors I had, Brother Esplin was honestly one of the best. He teaches out of sincerity and you definitely walk out of class feeling uplifted. He told awesome stories and applied the scriptures to each of us personally.
Brother Esplin changed the Doctrine & Covenants for me. This is one of my favorite religion classes I've ever taken.
Very dedicated and willing to work with his struggling students. Approachable and inspirational.
Dr. Esplin is the real deal. He is one of the cutest professors on campus, hands down. Never even had to read the scriptures in his class and i squeaked by with a 72%. Totally recommend the class to all RMs who don't want to study the gospel.... if you know what I mean. ;)
I loved this class. Prof. Esplin is one of my favorite Religion professors. If you show up and pay attention you should be fine. Great class
Quizzes and tests made up most of the grade. However, I really enjoyed taking from him! He was personable, kind, and cared a lot about the students! His lessons were focused more on the doctrine out of the scriptures and I feel like I learned a lot!
Brother Esplin is an amazing professor! Get ready for some in depth assignments but if you study and work hard, you'll pass with a great grade! He truly knows his stuff, ask anything and he knows the answer with a bunch of references to back his answers,
Lots of reading quizzes, but if you just do the reading you'll get 100s on all of them. 2 essays, graded fairly. He'll give you study guides for the tests (if you ask), and those are SUPER helpful. Test are very much lecture based, so go! Lectures are amazingly spiritual, while still teaching so much about church history. Take this class!
Bro. Esplin is such a nice man. The class isn't the most interesting, but it's about as easy as they come. There are reading quizzes once a week, two easy papers, and tests that aren't too difficult. Bro. Esplin really wants students to get the most out of the class, and is accommodating if you have any issues.
I felt like he made this class way harder and more boring than it should have been. He's a super sweet dude who loves the subject, but literally nobody cares and I fell asleep in the class more times than I want to admit. Very understanding tho, don't be afraid to ask for extensions or anything like that
Easiest religion class I have ever taken, but Esplin knows the material very well. I loved his lectures and learning about church history. He explains grading and assignments very well. Very lenient on grading and accommodating to student needs. Complete tests less than 30 mins; class average on tests low 90s.
Really good class. He's also extremely clear about what you need to do to get a good grade in the class.
Quizzes are easy and he prepares you well for tests. His class is pretty much how religion classes should be -- you need to read and be present, but it isn't difficult. Tests were worth 68% of the grade -- 20%/midterm*2 and 28% for the final -- but again, they were very reasonable.
He's a great professor, his lectures are amazing and I learned a lot! He's very understanding when you need extra help and is accommodating, and theres lots of reading but not much work.
Brother Esplin is a sweet professor and lectures were interesting. That being said I would NOT recommend this class. Tests are HARD and he looks for excruciating details. No personal application or spiritual uplift, just facts and history. Felt like I had to memorize historical background of all 76 sections for the final. NOT AN EASY A!!!!!
He is a caring man and knows a lot about religion. However, he talks really quickly and tends to skim over material. It was difficult for me to feel the spirit in his class because of the fast pace. The class includes a lot of reading, but it is all interesting material. The tests were difficult because there were SO MANY history questions.
You can tell he is really passionate about the history of the Church. Very focused lectures and always knows how to crack a few jokes in the middle. He even helped me answer some other deep doctrine questions that weren't even related to the class. Keep up with the reading assignments and take notes and you'll do just fine.
Brother Esplin is a wonderful human being. His class changed my life and strengthened my testimony a lot. His in-class quizzes were not difficult if you did the assigned reading (normally 12 D&C sections per class). His exams were also very straightforward and came straight from the reading and class discussion. He is amazing!!!
He is my favorite religion professor. His tests are straight forward, so you just have to know the material and you will do great. He doesn't try to make the class difficult at all but you learn a lot. He stays focused on what matters the most and only tests on what you learned in class. He also doesn't shy away from difficult topics.
I absolutely loved this class. Brother Esplin is so passionate about church history and can answer any questions you might have. He doesn't shy away from the difficult topics (polygamy, violence in early church history, etc.). He also was super understanding and helpful with accommodations and went out of his way to help me do well in his class.
A great professor. Very thoughtful and respectful lessons, he was always well prepared and open to any questions anyone asked. He spent a lot of time listening to questions and trying to make sure that they had their questions answered. Loved his class!!
The only issue with his class was the quizzes that you didn't know when they were going to happen. Had ten of them and at least one question always seemed pretty obscure. But, if you do the reading each time before class you'll be good. Tests are easy and straightforward. He trusts his students. He also talks really fast.
Prof. Esplin was my favorite religion professor. Dude is like a textbook. Ask him anything about that restoration that you're curios about. I went to his office once to ask a doctrinal/historical question and he was so nice. He supplied me with tons of academic resources that I had never read before. Average difficulty for a religion class.
Professor Esplin is amazing!! He is great at explaining the concepts of the class in a clear and entertaining way (often with examples and stories from his own life). Even though the math part of the class could be challenging (the actual math wasn't hard, there are just a lot of formulas to learn), the class was extremely helpful and fair.
Absolutely loved this class! I learned so much from Professor Esplin. We talked about difficult topics that are often overlooked in the Church which I really appreciated. Definitely would love to take another class from him in the future.
Kind man. Little bit of work when you take the course that is half online.
I learned so much in this class! This was my first religion class and I really enjoyed it. The homework can be a lot so make sure you don't fall behind! I missed an A- by one question on the final and he didn't give it to me :/
Followed the basic online restoration course pretty closely but with his own insights in lectures. Had some nice lectures and a great testimony. Some of the weekly work seemed a bit much to me for a 2 credit class but you are going to have the same assignments no matter who you take this class from
Very sweet guy, always willing to answer questions. My class was blended, so we met once a week, but as a result there was a lot of hw for a religion class. A little time consuming, but as long as you follow instructions, you'll be fine.
Professor Esplin is so awesome. He talks insanely fast, but he stops often during lectures to make sure everyone's on the same page. His lectures are very faith-promoting and informative, and he never avoided the uncomfortable parts of church history. Really solid and honest professor. Course work isn't bad at all, very fair for a religion class.
I took the canvas/in person combo and it wasn't my cup of tea. There is a ton of canvas reading, but the quality of lectures and the kindness of Bro Esplin made up for it. The lectures were very informative, but he didn't expect you to remember every date. He just wants you to learn more about the church's history and apply it to your life.
Prof. Esplin is genuinely a caring person and wants to help his students. However, the blended nature of this course made it difficult. We met once a week, and there he would reiterate a lot of what we learned in the online modules so it wasn't the most helpful. He really does know his stuff though! He can answer any question you throw his way.
Wasn't a fan of the blended course setup. Lectures felt like a speed through as fast as possible of what you read online the week before. The online assignments and readings are long, involving lots of D&C sections and conference talks. By only skimming the readings, I still got an A though. Hope to take an entirely in-person class with Esplin.
Taken as a blended course. Lots to read, but it was all interesting. He does a great job at diving into the "difficult" topics of church history. Very factual, unbiased, and faith promoting lectures. Willing to answer any questions. Pay attention to the learning objectives, the tests are straight from them! Great professor.
I took the blended restoration class, thinking that it would be less time-consuming because class is only once/wk and inspirational because it's taught by the dean. PSYCH! He expects you to spend 4+ hrs/wk on hw for a 2 credit class. The readings are useless rehashes of themselves. Class was super dry and he gave few participation opportunities.
The midterms are insanely difficult, with the given study guides and quizzes only covering about half if less of the content of the questions. Some quiz questions become modified from their original dialogue and require multiple choices to be selected when the original question only asked for one answer, making it impossible to properly prepare.
Loved Esplin. Awesome teacher, take from him if you have the chance. I looked forward to his lecture every week. But the blended class is not the way to go though, 4 hours of homework a week... If you just make sure to follow the learning outcomes you'll be fine for the tests though.
Great teacher for religion he really cared about the subject and made it possible for every student to get an A if they worked for it
Loved this professor! My testimony grew when learning about the more difficult topics of Church History because he did such a great job answering our questions and guiding us to sources. I took the blended class so I did a lot of reading but you can for sure succeed and I learned a lot doing my Restoration Project!
All this professor wants you to do is succeed. He is the sweetest Professor I've had at BYU so far. The class has 4 short reflection papers, 4 elective activities(picked from a list, he also allows you to choose your own if you ask him), a discussion post each time you have class, a final project, and other little assignments sprinkled in. Best one
Note: Grades don't really matter for UNIV as it is a pass/fail class. Professor Esplin is an amazing professor! He structured the class so that we would learn a new resource on campus each day and then have a spiritual lesson. He generally cares for every student and is willing to work through issues of academic or personal matters.
I took the independent study version of this course. While the layout and assignments are fairly easy to follow, the tests are super specific and hard. I would recommend searching up quizlets to help study for the quizzes and exams. Pay attention to every little detail in the readings because it will be on the test.
Great teacher, good lectures. His only flaw is way too much homework for a 2 credit class. The homework is definitely equal to a 3 credit class, maybe even a little more.
