he's out to lunch; poor instruction that didn't make much sense unless you'd had the lower-level class, which isn't required. focuses too much on artsy-fartsy graphics and not photography. i majored in print journalism to write and take photos, not design the shopper section.
Good prof. Very clear and explains all the Quark assignments. All of the notes come from lectures and he takes role, so go to class. Tests are not too hard, he grades fair. Interesting material if you like graphic design.
Farrand is Awesome! The class isn't that bad if you pay attention to the demos he does in class. He is nit-picky. Any small mistake will cost you your grade. Do the quark assignments ahead of time instead of waiting till the last minute and you'll be fine!
Good teacher. Knows what he's talking about. Tough grader, but it helps you out in the long run. I recommend him.

He's always really enthusiastic about what's he's doing, but he can grade tough.

Interesting class when youre actually in the lab designing but he its all subjective leaving your work open to much interpretation and he either loves it if your original and he sees you enjoy his class or hates it if he sees your just doing an assignment to get it done and over. He really wont care if you do everything right if he doesnt like your theme. He can be a real prick
Farrand is one of the best professors ive ever had. Just ask him a lot of questions and ask for help and hell basically tell you what to do. Hes so much fun and he really cares about his students! If you actually try in this class youll really love it!
Scott is really nice and helpful, as long as you actually put forth the effort. I knew nothing about graphic design, and now I can use many new programs and can do all sorts of things I could not do before the class. He grades a little tough, but if you put forth an effort and are creative, he will let some mistakes slide.
Farrand is a great professor. He really knows his stuff. There is a good bit out work to do outside of class, but if you're interested in graphic design/production, take this class because you learn so much! Don't buy the book. We literally never used it. It's optional.
Farrand is a good teacher. He knows his stuff very well. There's a lot of work to do for this class, but atleast it's interesting. He will help you all he can if you ask, but you have to ask. Take him if you can.
Farrand is a good teacher. He's funny and while there is alot of work to be done, overall it's easy and he will help you if you come to him. Don't wait until the last minute on assignments because you can keep taking work you've done and he'll tell you what to change to make a better grade. Two tests and both are very easy
OMG!! This is like the best professor like EVER!! His skillz are da'bomb, fo sheezy. You should like soooo take his class like fo reel.
WHAT A GREAT TEACHER! If you can take him for 364-do it! Esp if you aren't big on graphics to begin with. Really straight forward--attend class regularly though! Don't buy the book-just take good notes! Take the projects seriously and do them early cause he will critique them for u before the due date and tell u how to fix it to make an A!
Hands down, the best at the J school. His passion and experience seeps into his lectures. He is understanding if you have issues, and will help you as much as possible. Unlike Kornegay, Farrand puts student interests above his own. Last semester his dad died and his wife had heart surgery. We didn't even know until the last day.
Easily one of the best teachers I've had at USC. My only complaint about him is that he LOVES quark, which is outdated and therefore useless, but any prof. for this class will be like that. He is incredibly helpful and interesting, and even if you're not big into viscom he makes his class interesting and interactive.
Hands down he is an AMAZING teacher! If you have the chance to take him, do it! Very very helpful and keeps you interested!
He is by far the most enthusiastic teacher I've ever had. He makes the class extremely interesting and makes you believe that you will use what he teaches you later on in your career. I would definitely reccommend him to anyone. Extremely knowlegeable. His tests are fairly easy. Know to love Quark in this class or you will fail. Great class
Favorite teacher so far, loved going to class and actually learned interesting things regardless of if you are a viscom major. I'm a PR major and am dissapointed I won't have any more classes with him. If you have to take 368 take him, it might be a little more work but its really worth it
One of the most amazing teachers you'll ever take in college. He expects a lot out of you, but he makes you want to work for it. He's smart and enthusiastic about his students and his job. It's outrageously refreshing to have a teacher like this! He made me want to stay in school and complete a 2nd degree in VisCom after being an Ad major. So i did
I was a Vis Comm major entering J464 and Professor Farrand made me change that. His class was very tough for me. However, he is one of the most helpful, most experienced teachers I have ever had! His class is not for the inexperienced but he is always willing to help!
interesting assignments, good lecture, definitely learned alot about good design...
Professor Farrand was pretty good. He's personable and tries to make the lectures interesting. The assignments are somewhat tough, but interesting and help you learn the subject. I'd take him again. I hear he's the best of all the 364 professors.
great class discussions, it is refreshing to be in a class where the professor is passionate about what they do, will give input so you get the most out of your assignments......reviews for test are straight forward and very helpful....challenges you to tap into your creativity more, enjoyed the class...
farrand is awesome. his lectures are so interesting that even if attendance wasn't mandatory (which it is) i'd go to class every day. however, if you know you just flat out aren't creative, you're going to struggle with the projects. for the amount of time i spent in the mac lab it should have been 4 credits. but its worth it to take him
Probably one of my favorite teachers in the Vis Com department. He's very helpful on projects and assignments, and makes the class really fun and always encourages participation. Really fair in all aspects. I highly recommend you take this professor for Jour 364.
farrand made me like viscom so much more, he made it interesting and was always clear. show up on days when not many people are expected (late game days) and get extra credit. nice and helpful, he gives credit where credit is due and criticism. easy tests, difficult assignments if you're not good with computers. best 360 teach in j school
One of my favorite professors within the Visual Communications major! Farrand is extremely helpful and though he can be very harsh in his critiques he tells you how you can make it better. If you don't do well in this class then this major is not meant for you, and he'll let you know that too. Highly recommend him
Awesome professor! Farrand is so helpful and insightful. He taught me alot about my future profession and made me confident in the skills he taught me. I got an internship because of this class, take Farrand!
Farrand has been my favorite prof. since freshman year! I love the way he teaches. he is brilliant and will help you a lot. He knows what he is talking about so listen to him. Not an easy grader, but you will learn a lot! take him!!
GREAT PROFESSOR! I definitely recommend taking him. This class is very time consuming because paying attention to detail in your work is crucial. He gives great feedback (although it may be harsh) but it's for your own benefit. Class lectures def aren't boring! He treats you as if you were already working in the real world-- which I liked.
He is a hard teacher- you need to do all the in design projects early and show them to him and correct them and you will get a A. I suggest getting the free trial on indesign on your MacBook instead of going to the lab so you can work on the project at home. His test have nothing to do with the book. (all on the notes in class)
I've taken him for intro to vis com and this design class. He is a quirky/art-minded guy, so he has pretty high expectations of your work and its details. It's not an easy A. However, if you want to get better at design, take him. If you just want an easy grade, try someone else.
Not an easy A, but will help you improve greatly in Design. He will treat you like a colleague which I love. Show him your designs before turning them in. Comments on your work can be harsh at times, but this will help you improve. Definitely recommend taking Farrand!
If you have no prior knowledge of INdesign or other design technique class will be hard! You cannot pass the class without doing well on those assignments. Try to get them done before the deadline so that you can go to him for feedback to give him EXACTLY what he wants. Attendance is mandatory, tests come from notes that you must be in class to get
Not an easy A, but you will learn a lot. This class is a big time commitment, so be prepared to spend many hours in the lab in order to get a decent grade. He's a tough professor but a very smart man.
I love this guy. I'm a Viscom major... don't really like Viscom, but Farrand inspired me. He helped bring out my creative skills and helped me to find abilities I never knew I had. He's a great person - very tough class, but you will learn so much.
Farrand is my favorite. He's no joke as a professor and grades in extreme detail, but pushes you to put out professional-level work because he knows we can. Tough critic sometimes, but I'm a better designer because of him & seek his advice on my work all the time & he's always willing to give feedback. Not an easy A, but worth the work. Take him!!
He has been my absolute favorite teacher I have ever taken here! His class is a decent amount of work, but he gives you plenty of time to get it done and helps you all along the way. He truly cares about his students and has taught me so much! I would absolutely take him again and plan too! He is super funny as well.
Favorite professor ever. Great personality and a great professor. Super objective grader in a subjective major. Learned a lot of real world applicable skills. Cares more about what you learn than what grade you get. He's also a blast in germany, too.
There's technically attendance but he doesn't care if you don't go. If you're good at design or even if you like it, he'll love you. He taught me so much and definitely made my life easier in the long run! There's 3 or 4 big projects that you work on during class, no tests. Literally didn't turn in half of my final project and still got an A.
If you're not a artsy/creative person, avoid this class! InDesign is the backbone of this course. If you unaware of the program, learn and learn it fast. It's his way or no way. 4 InDesign lessons, 2 tests & 1 group project. He will help if he can, but will bash you if it's not up to his standards. Class wasn't benefical to a print journalism major
Mr. Farrand created the workbook for his Visual Communications class that involves using (AND BUYING) Adobe InDesign. Not only is that program expensive, but he grades the projects you turn it so tough, that it makes it nearly impossible to get a good grade. He makes students feel dumb for speaking out in class. Would not recommend him.
Farrand is a great guy. He's funny and great at what he does- you'll learn a lot. His lectures are a little all over the place sometimes, but if you show up and take notes, you'll do just fine. The class before the test, he'd always go over what was really important to know. The final project is designing a resume which was great for real life!
Prof. Farrand is very nit-picky about what he wants on your InDesign lesson. I will say he did make me think of how I need to be more visual with my major. The book is necessary (he created it)! I wouldn't take again, but I learned life lessons from him. InDesign lessons and 2 test. Lectures are everywhere, but you will need the notes.
Farrand was neither here nor there. Strange guy with an extreme imagination, so if you aren't creative his projects are kind of tough. But he is available outside of class & will provide feedback & give direction for you work. Tests are easy if you go to the review, take notes & study the handouts.
He cares about design and it really shows. He's a tough grader but he wants you to learn the right way. Book is needed (he wrote it!), it has instructions for all inDesign lessons. You don't have to buy inDesign, it's on the J School computers. I bought it just so I could work from home. Really great teacher. Study the worksheets and take notes!
Farrand CARES about what he does. Many people don't like him because he has a very clear idea of what he wants for projects, but I liked it because he gave very clear feedback and was always around to help. 100% get the book, you will need it. He checks attendance everyday. You have to work for an A, but it wasn't impossible to get.
Farrand is one of my favorite professors because he is good at what he does and is not hesitant to share his knowledge with his students. Although his critiques are harsh, I've become a much better designer because of it and it's all so worth it in the end. He is always open for questions and really wants his students to be great at what they do.
Farrand is a real gem of a Professor and a huge asset to any student who takes him while at USC. Not only does he provide education to visual communications, he also teaches his students how to be successful in their field of work. The class is hard and very design based (40 percent tests, 60 percent design). Hard class, good experience.
Its no holds barred in his class
Farrand is very specific with what he likes but he's a professional and what he likes is usually what's actually good. I see people in class get upset often but if you can't handle constructive criticism then vis com isn't the field for you anyway. Listen to him, you'll learn-- a lot. Easy to get an A if you try and don't skip too much class
Here's the thing with Farrand: he's tough. But even after receiving my first F on a project in his class, I still respected him. He genuinely cares about you and he knows the field. He will take a personal interest in you and help you succeed. There will be a lot of learning as well as trial and error but all of it makes you a better designer.
HARDEST PROF EVER. His attendance policy is signing in to class, so a lot of kids sign in and leave. He says he "rewards who comes to class and penalizes those who do not." You should STAY in class. Midterm and final are easy but all the Indesign projects are so hard. Doesn't go into detail with the software needed for this course. VERY HARD GRADER
I'm a public relations major but was required to take this class. He is a TOUGH grader, almost like he thinks everyone is going to be pros at indesign by the first day. He genuinely cares that you learn about indesign, but I wish he would be a little more lenient on the non-viscom people. Lectures were mostly really interesting and he can be funny
Farrand is a tough grader and professor but he actually cares about making you a better designer. Avoid him if you're not a viscom major but if you are, taking him is worth it. He'll make some discouraging comments and doesn't hold back in his grading, but it's intended to make you a much better designer. He means well, just expect a low grade
He is so tough if you want to spend 8+ hours on ONE assignment this is the class for you!! He loves to add tricks in the assignment to add extra time for you to comeplete them. Tests are very hard. Dont take this
Farrand is the best. He cares and he is really inspirational. If you want a professor that will believe you can do amazing things, take his class because he will remind you and inspire you. He can be hard on some people, but rightfully so. Just work hard and you will be really happy.
Farrand is one of the best professors I have had at USC. He is very knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches. He wrote his own indesign book with detailed steps on how to do the projects, so they are not hard if you follow his step-by-step instructions. His lectures are not bad, he's a funny guy! Take him over any other VSCOM professor.
Farrand is a nice man who evaluates most things very subjectively. His lively lectures were very easy to engage in, but not so easy to take notes on as he mostly referred to things as either "brilliant" or "terrible." I think his heart is in the right place, but I found it very difficult being a beginner.
I have taken two graphics classes with Farrand and have just not enjoyed either. He is definitely very knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about in terms of design, but he is a really tough and subjective grader and has kind of outdated taste. His critiques are helpful, but also unnecessarily embarrassing sometimes.
Farrand is clearly an expert in his field. He is not an easy A but he teaches you valuable skills and has lots of knowledge about the industry. He can be harsh but without his harsh feedback you cant improve. He is preparing his students for the real world.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Scott Farrand is talented period. I loved his class he does a good job of teaching us the technical side while also giving his own twist/philsophy. He also gives really thorough critiques which only is to help us be better designers. He also is super inspirational and helped me realize that I am going in the right direction.
Everybody in my class has an issue with Farrand. He undermines students and is extremely disrespectful. His ideas on graphic design are so outdated & the graphics he has us make are so ugly they make our stories look worse. I really don't understand why he is a part of senior semester since he rarely shows up anyways. Not at all available either.
Farrand waited until 4 days before the final project was due to give us the materials to start it and didn't respond to any emails during finals week, and he ended on a very unclear note so there were lots of questions. Grades very subjectively, and lectures are boring with no real notes. He just describes things as great, terrible, or crazy.
This class is relatively easy. He gets a lot of negative comments because people wait until the last minute to start his projects and consequently dont do well. I went to him for feedback on every project and received an A on all of them. His test are on paper and a lot of fill in the blank. Not terribly hard, but you need to study. Overall, good.
Farrand is very knowledgeable but does pick favorites when it comes to grading. If he doesn't like your piece, get ready for a bad grade. Can sometimes be rude when critiquing. That being said he certainly knows what he is doing and if you can handle some criticism, his class will teach you tons.
This class is an easy A if you have a general understanding of graphic design. Otherwise, you might struggle but not too much. Projects are very straightforward and he gives step-by-step details on how to complete them in the textbook. There are 2 tests that have general information from the lectures but they are very detailed. Overall pretty solid
Scott is mean to his students and only gets away with it because he has experience in his field. Hes never in class and weve had to wait hours to publish stories because hes rarely available. He legitimately makes me uncomfortable and makes inappropriate jokes. Its a shame this guy is a part of Senior Semester. Stay away if you can.
This is the most narcissistic professor that you could ever take. If you have the chance to take one of his study abroad classes, don't. He is unorganized, unprofessional, and he makes creepy comments towards every girl on the trip. He is not a good professor. Don't believe the other reviews. Do a different study abroad trip if you have the chance.
He is awesome!! Took him for information graphics and he is very respected in the field plus he has great advice from his experience 10/10
His grading can seem harsh at first, but if you do the projects on time and don't procrastinate, you will do fine. He can be a bit eccentric but he is a very knowledgeable about graphic design and genuinely wants you to do better. Overall a pretty good professor.
I was the only male in my class, and he told me to my face that I would do bad because I'm male and therefore less creative. Most every week he would ridicule me for no reason, and call me out in front of the class because he didn't like my work, insulting my projects, grading too hard based on his opinion rather than the assignment specifications.
Scott Farrand is one of the most interesting professors I've had, to say the least. He is very self-assured, to the point where most of his lectures are about how great he is and his own contributions to the field. However, he does genuinely give super helpful advice and feedback. Helped me become much better at design!
Farrand is extremely knowledgable and respected in the world of visual communications and design. His classes are fun and allow students to show their potential. Critiques can be harsh and rude. He is always happy to help out of class. If you don't put the work in, you will not receive a good grade. Farrand gives you what you put in!
By far the worst journalism professor I've ever had. He is very opinionated with his grading and made me feel like an idiot and that I shouldn't be a journalism major. Scott is rude and did not make me want to pursue this field at all. Don't take him.
Farrand was a teacher who knew a lot about the his field but most of the time was full of himself. Be ready to keep up with notes, the man goes way too fast. He always talks about himself and how he thinks he is higher up than everyone. The tests he makes are complex as well but be prepared to have bad lessons on what to do on adobe Indesign.
Scott is extremely full of himself. He really is a tough grader and his lectures aren't great either. I stopped going to his class because of this and am still passing. You have to buy a textbook from a 3rd party website that he wrote so I'm sure on top of getting money from our tuition he's getting some more for everyone that buys that book.
This professor is a very tough grader but he knows what he is talking about and is interesting. If you do not put in the work you will struggle. His office hours are extremely helpful so use them. His lectures are very fast. His tests are a lot of fill in the blank. Projects can take a while so dont procrastinate and you will be fine.
Really harsh grader. Tests are mostly fill-in-the-blank and mostly on things we barely covered. Makes creepy comments to girls. 0/10 would not take again.
Don't take him. Class is hard to pay attention in and he goes way to fast and then one small detail that you miss in your notes will end up being on the exam. As for the projects I feel like the grade you get is partially just based on his own opinion and not if you did the project correctly.
Professor Farrand is a tough but good professor. He will tell you if you did horrible but his word is valuable because he has so much experience in the design industry. If you can't take constructive criticism do not take him because you will get your feelings hurt. If you put in a lot of work, you will excel in his class and in the design world.
This man is the WORST teacher I have ever had. He was my professor abroad and he just about ruined the trip. He changed the schedule every day and did not meet with anyone at an allotted time. Messed up students' grades and then was unreachable to fix them. Made creepy comments to girls. Told the class "I'm smarter, richer and more famous than you"
I am the same student from the previous review. He was unusually cruel when reviewing projects and assigned another teacher to grade stuff and when we took her feedback he took off points for it. He made a girl cry in our group because of how ruthless he was during a project check in. My perfect attendance and days of work - I still got a B. BEWARE
Farrand was the most unorganized professor I have ever worked with in my entire life. He would tell us one thing about a project and the next day would look at us like we were crazy when we said what we discussed the day prior. Nothing is in writing, all communication is verbal, and this caused far too many problems. Grading is all subjective.
Farrand is the Jekyll and Hyde of the J School. Some days you'll think hes the worst and others you'll think he's a good professor. This is my 2nd time having him and he was more bearable this time. Grades his stuff pretty late in the sem. He does mean well and knows what hes talking about but the structure of things is all over the place.
Farrand is a bit of a legend amongst students- it's best to take him with a grain of salt. He can be a bit weird, but honestly, I found that it made the class more interesting. His tests are specific, so it's crucial to take detailed notes. Overall, I like Farrand. He is knowledgeable and genuinely wants his students to succeed.
I loved Dr Farrand's class, I think he is a really fair professor. Besides the fact you only get two unexcused absences, he is a relaxed grader and if you do the work and pay attention then your grade will be fine. The final grade is made up of about 5 projects and 2 exams, and exams require specific knowledge from the lectures, so take good notes!
This is my second time having this professor. I really did not want him again but he was the only one available. He is a tough grader. He will ramble on about things then put it on the test. In this class I have been ignored multiple times by him. He will tell you your work is wrong even thought it is a creative course. Don't take unless necessary.
Very disorganized and could never make his mind up when asking for feedback. When showing what we had so far for our group project it was always up in the air if he was going to like it or absolutely hate it. Would often be rude to students in front of the entire class. Just kinda mean.
