Great prof, very willing to help and a great sense of humor. Be prepared to write fast, we took a LOT of notes, a whole notebook full for one quarter (the other person who said they only took 7 pages of notes must have slept through most of the class). He adds a lot to what is in the textbook, so it is well worth going to class for the extra info

I enjoyed this class. If you show up and do what's required, this class is definatly an easy 'A'. You do tend to take a lot of notes but he has them on overhead and explains them as people are writing.

Take Finnie! Great guy! Fairly easy class. Suggestions: copy overheads word for word and save them for the mid term and final. He tells you what to pay attention to before all T/F tests. Tests have mixed up wording. Read & Study! Remember- If part of a question is false it is all false. You'll do fine! I learned lots that I couldn't learn elsewhere

"Big Daddy" is an extremly laid back Professor. He makes his class fun, always makes you feel welcome and is always there for you.

Easiest 4.0 ever. Copy his notes word for word. Tells you how many T's and F's on his tests. Goes off on random tangents a lot, and sometimes forces his VERY democratic political views on you. I once asked why Af. Am's use the "n" word so much. Try it sometime, will waste an entire class period. .1 gpa bump for attending every class.

By far the best teacher and class I have had a EWU. His class is easy and he makes it fun. I laughed a lot. Only downside was that there were a lot of notes, but other than that it was a great class and book.

Same class as AAST 315. This is a "Why am I in college?" class. If you just want good grades and need the diversity credit, take this class. But if you want to learn something, just read the book and save yourself the tuition. He is a great guy, but this class was middle school easy.

Finnie is a great professor. The few negative comments he has received must be from while males with a chip on their shoulder. He does not press his views on others and makes class a comfortable forum for controversial discussions. Makes topics clear especially those that are more sensitive.

Took this Spring 2007 & got a 3.7. Make sure to show up the day before a quiz or test bc he lets u know what the quiz/test is going to be on. Lectures were kind of pointless & sometimes lots of notes. Didn't seem eager to really teach bc he's basically just reading the overhead notes. There are 2 assigned papers, just bs it. Easy class overall.

Loved the class and loved him as a teacher. He made it easy to get an easy grade-with his Big Daddy bonus and if you were there for every "card day" then you get .2 bump in your grade. Only 2 four-page papers but they're not hard. Just as long as you read for the quizzes and got the notes-the tests were pretty much a piece of cake.

What a great teacher! This class is a must for Eastern Students.

Provides clear slide shows, shows relevant and interesting movies, and has guest speakers that are also interesting.

I took this class as a honors credit/AAST214 The class in general was fairly simply, the material was interesting, and Dr. Finnie tried to make sure we had a good time. He always let us out early and would always go over the tests in detail the day before. For an honor credit all you had to do in addition tot he class was write a 4 page biography.

Dr. Finnie or "Big Daddy" is an excellent professor. He is passionate and he is well spoken. He teaches classes that are thought provoking and if you truly take the time to dive into the material it will enrich you as a person. I would highly recommend anything that he teaches, as I have taken several classes from him. All the teachers in the A

Such an easy class. Tests are a bit hard, all true/false based off the text, but he tells you what to study from the book and pretty much gives you the answers. Just watch out on wording! But yeah he gives you so much opportunity for extra credit, plus big daddy bump (.2 if you go to class), so it's hard not to 4.0

Big Daddy is a pro at teaching. He is very charasmatic, and has a sense of humor. One of the only people that can cover a broad history of a continent in one quarter successfully.

awesome. really, he can make a 2 1/2 hour class fly by- really knows what he's doin. doesn't try to screw your grade over or pull any fast ones, really looks out for your best intrests. laid back and funny. one of EWU's best profs for sure

Took this class online and it was okay. Lots of reading from class texts and then summarizing in papers, but it was pretty open and simple. The final exam is also fairly easy, just review the main points and people. Lots of positive feedback.

He's probably the EASIEST professor on campus as far as grades go. All of his students automatically get a 0.1 GPA bump and if if you have nearly perfect attendance, you get another 0.1 bump, known as the "Big Daddy Double Bump!!!" To top it off, he has some of the most enjoyable lectures I have ever had! I HIGHLY recommend any of his classes.

He is a boss! Take him for sure. He was rated the #1 teacher in the spokane area in the Inlander. Seriously the best prof i've ever had. Anyone can get a decent grade in his class, even if your half downie haha

He is the best professor I have had so far. I took his class because I couldn't handle Kieswetter's history class and I didn't want to murder my GPA right off the bat. He can go into little rants about christianity and his beliefs every once in a while, but its well worth it to take his class.

I took this class in 2009 and I got to say, he is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. I'm not one for African History, but he made the class enjoyable and worth while. I would take another class from him any day. I highly recommend him.

He was such a great prof! He always made class fun and loved what he taught. I enjoyed going to class and learning. His tests are T/F and they're kind of tricky so that was a little difficult but he's open to answering any questions and he is very helpful. As long as you read and come to class to take notes you'll do great. He was really great!

Dr. Finnie is an interesting instructor who is committed to student understanding of the material. If you take the online version of his HIST 216 course, be prepared for at least 25 pages of writing, but the videos, readings, and video lectures are cool. Dr. Finnie cares about comprehension, not grammar, and will help with understanding.

You're gonna love Finnie the person. Finnie the professor is a different story. He's an awesome guy, but not an overly impressive teacher. He's okay; only average in terms of teaching quality. He is very inconsistent about his own attendance, and his lectures don't correlate with the book. All that said, he's the coolest teacher I've had.

great teacher have taken two classes with him-the time flys by-interesting-learned a lot, he made the work seem easy because he is so engaging and does a great job teaching-to do well you must read the material carefully he prides himself on his tricky T&F tests

Learned a lot from this class without brutality. Class consisted of either taking notes from his PowerPoint presentation or watching a movie. His tests are all true or false questions. Cake walk. He has one writing assignment which is the most improtant thing in the class and is due mid-term. After that it's smooth sailing.

Finnie is a very fun guy. He has no problem explaining what he expects from his students and has no problem putting in the effort to make those students want to meet those expectations. He is very helpful and understanding. He had no problem letting me make up late quizzes. Attendance not required but most of his quizzes are based on his lectures.

Finnie is a super awesome guy, prefers texts messages and that you call him "Big Daddy" haha. He shows a lot of videos and likes to give bumps in GPA at the end of the quarter. Pretty much, as long as you put a decent amount of effort forth, you can get a 4.0.

Loved Dr. Finnie! His nickname is big Daddy because we are all his "kids". He makes class fun and I learned a lot. Watched a lot of videos that gave us a lot of information as well. If you don't do well on a test (which is probably just because you didn't take notes) he just says, "Hey! That okay! Just do the extra credit!" Doesn't get angry at all. Before we take test he goes through the the book and tells us what is going to be on the test. Best teacher ever!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Took this class online during the spring quarter. Was pretty time consuming for me. You write three essays every two weeks. Overall, I woudl recomend it. The TA was awesome, always giving good feedback and super speedy to answer your questions. The class itself was pretty interesting but I had internet problems when it came to accessing the videos!

Maybe Finnie's easy in person, but online was crazy hard. Every 10 day module I had to write 2800ish words in papers. I put in 12-15 hours hard work per module, and I'm usually the "do it in an hour before class" type. Didn't see much of Finnie, but great TA. I just took it for the requirement, but I ended up learning a ton of interesting stuff.

Dr. Finnie is a great African American History teacher. He's not a hard grader, but in order to pass this class you have to read your books and go over your notes for the reading quizzes & exams he gives. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you don't pick up handed back work he will mark you absent. He gets off track sometimes, but he's funny.

He is by far one of the Greatest and most memorable professors I have ever had the opportunity of being taught under. Hilarious joking humor, stays on topic for the most part, loves and has a passion for what he teaches. The only way not to pass his class with an A is to skip everyone. Extra credit opportunities are huge! Also he goes by Big Daddy

Awesome teacher!!! He knows how to joke around and makes class fun. His tests are easy. Almost never had homework and he's not strict when it comes to attendance. Also, you learn quite a bit about African American History. Definitely would want to be in his again.

He helps you out on tests and even the final, he will give you second chances, and he's just a really easy-going guy, that I feel like any student can talk to. He's super friendly and funny! He's a hilarious and fun teacher. He loves his job! He also knows his facts, and he presents history from different viewpoints. However, this quarter he was gone a lot. He does not directly pull information from the textbook in his lectures, but all the quizzes are based on the textbook. So the textbook is necessary. I would recommend him.

Big Daddy is one of the best teachers I've ever had. although he is often not in class (especially end of the year). He's pretty funny. And tells you exactly what is on the test. Although if you have the time to read the whole chapter it is highly recommended. He doesn't take daily attendance but through quizzes and in class assignments.

He's hilarious and an incredible teacher who's very passionate about the subject. Wasn't entirely interested in the subject but he made it easy by practically giving you what questions were on tests and quizzes. Reading to find the answers is important.

Professor Finnie's class was excellent. If you read, go to class, and pay attention to the lectures, you'll get an easy 4.0. He makes the topic entertaining, and gives a .2 boost to your grade if you show up to class. He assigns one big annotated bibliography, the rest of the quizes are all pretty easy.

If you have the opportunity, take any of Dr. Finnie's classes, he is one of the best professors at Eastern. He is so funny and tells stories rather than lectures. He is widely respected and often teaches around the world. The tests are very easy if you study for them. Very good to boost your GPA. I highly recommend.

If you have perfect attendance he will give you a "Big Daddy boost" which is a bump to your gpa. His teaching style just wasn't for me, but many others really enjoyed his class.

By far Dr. Finnie (BD) is my favorite professor from Eastern so far. His class is both eye opening and important to learn from. He is caring and understanding of student's personal lives. All his tests are relatively hard but I got either a B or C on just about everything and finnished with an A because he gives so much extra credit. DO YOUR ANNOTATED BIB AHEAD OF TIME AND IT WILL HELP YOUR GRADE A LOT!!

It was a very easy class to pass, honestly one of my favorites here at EWU. Taking another one of his classes.

Took his online class and it is very easy, three essays every two weeks but they are honestly all about the book and the videos that he assigns. There is no reason to get below an A.

He is considered one of the best professors on campus, and for good reason. He gives actual meaning to his lectures and encourages conversation in class, even if it the discussion is a bit off-topic. He told us to call him "Big Daddy" and gives TONS of extra credit. All quizes are true or false and the Midterm was multiple choice and true/false.

Great guy, taken him for the second quarter now, amazing both times. Make sure you actually read the chapters and you are more than golden.

This course was an easy 4.0, there were 2 assignments that were due every 2 weeks and there was a total of 9 discussions/short writing assignments. No tests, quizzes or final. I would not recommend the textbook because he provides all of the readings for you. Overall, this course was not challenging at all. If you need an extra 3 credit take this!

One of the best history teachers I've ever had. He taught me a lot and his class is not difficult. He made class fun to show up to and gives a lot of extra credit so there's no way you can fail. There's only one big assignment which is the annotated bibliography but once you complete that everything else is super easy. Wish I can take class again.

One of my favorite professors of all time. I spent the entire quarter making extremley controversial comments related to his lectures and challenged him on his views and he gave me extra credit because my comments ended up getting the class engaged in conversation because most people got angry. I love when a professor gives you freedom on comments

I took his AAST class a few quarters ago and I'm still convinced I imagined this man. That class was a fever dream. Our final was extra credit and watching him play the Beatles on guitar.

This man is amazing. He hands out extra credit points because of small things like his favorite teams winning or even it raining on test day.

Finnie had great lectures, super understanding about being able to buy the required readings, and truly cared for his students and would listen to the input they gave him about grading, extra credit, and test walkthroughs

Dr. Finnie was amazing. He was very kind, understanding, always gave extra credit, and never gave any surprises on tests. After each test he would go over them and give us an opportunity to get extra credit. He did screw up my grade by forgetting to fix something in the grade book, but other than that he's a great professor.

Dr. Finnie is an amazing professor, especially if this is one of your first college classes. He gives extra credit for almost every assignment and goes over every test and quiz before and after. There are no surprises on them either. Participate in class!! Answering his questions, and asking your own gets you a long way.

Overall, I absolutely loved Dr. Finnie. He was very hilarious when it came to giving his lectures and was accessible outside of class. He makes the whole class feel like a family and he will make sure you pass with at least a B.

He's one of (if not the) the best rated professor on here for EWU for a reason. You learn a lot, but he's nice, funny, patient, and everything you could want from a teacher. I had a rough quarter because of transportation issues but he's extremely friendly and accommodating- if you talk with him, you'll likely no reason to worry. Highly recommend.

Honestly, I had assumed I'd get a boring professor. I had been suggested to go to Finnie's classes specifically 'cause he was "hilarious," and he was. He jokes, goes serious, then jokes around, and sometimes he sings. I went to almost every event he had hosted out of class, he would always give out free food. He rewards participation generously.
