I AM NOT GREAT AT MATH, BUT HE MADE MATH INTERESTING AND YEAH HE TALKS ABOUT SURFING BUT HE ALWAYS IS WILL TO EXTEND A HELPING HAND TO HIS STUDENTS. HIS TEST ARE JUST LIKE THE LECTURES IF YOU STUDY YOU WILL DEFINATELY PASS HIS CLASS. I WILL ABSOLUTELY TAKE HIM AGAIN.

Great teacher! Very fun class. As long as you show up you'll pass. Homework is optional, just a few tests, and he grades whatever way he can to ensure you get a good grade. Highly recommended

proffesor is great. Never get behind and you will get a good grade. Tests are a bit hard.

Test are hard&tricky even if you dont miss a class. Uses bell curve only, B students are screwed for any curve or extra points. You can tell he enjoys teaching does make the class interesting, very helpful.No study guides, he says study notes from lectures however there a few test questions not covered. Only three students had"A" going into final.

I had prof. Flax for two classes. Stats was much easier he gave review sheets that were similar to the tests. One of the best profs. I have had. He is insane, but a gift to the teaching community. He did give some trick questions but who cares college is not easy. Definitely take this guy.

I really enjoyed his class. He makes learning math fun. He cracks jokes. I like the way he explains problems. He makes sure you get it. He is very helpful and always there to help. I am taking him again this summer for another math class.

Prof. Flax is the man. funniest prof ive had, made learning easy and fun. im not exactly the math type but his tutelage has caused me to become more interested in math in general. i wish i could take him again. seriously take him. one of the highest quality profs ive ever had.

I am taking him now. He is an awesome teacher; makes learning fun and is very helpful. You will hear a lot of comments about surfing. Take notes on everything he writes. Not hard just thorough, covers all material on test. Study notes. He gives proof for why things are done the way they are. Ex:why -1 x-1 = 1 doesnt say because that is how its done

Great teacher. He's very funny & laid back. I was always in his office or he would meet me in math lab to go over questions. He teaches so that you understand why, not just, that's the way it is. I suck so bad at math & the class wasn't easy, you do have to study & go to lab, but I got a B out of his class. Scott rocks!

Awesome professor. Really cool with students. No homework was due except take home quizes. He goes slightly fast. This is because he has to. But I learned a lot in his class because of his teaching style. If you are into surfing he will love you. Tests are difficult, but passable.

I enjoyed this class and the professor very much. The class enviroment is fun, he is a nice guy. Explains things well. I was horrible at math in highschool, but understood Professor Flaxx. To do well on his exams, you really have to go back to your notes. Take good notes. I would recommend him.

I dont know what some of these people were on when they took Prof. Flax. He is really cool. Graded EVERYTHING on a huge curve. Did talk about surfing a lot, but expects you to work hard. If you wanna miss a day or two, drop out of school. He is a fun professor, explains everything quickly but still explains everything. Great math professor.

Professor Flax is a great professor. He does talk about surfing alot but it is what he enjoys away from his job. I took him twice for college algebra, he is thorough and some people do not like that but he is a great professor. I have had him 3 semesters and am taking him next semester too. Definately recommend.

Highly recomended. Give him a day or two and he will make you laugh and learn at the same time. A question or two may be tricky on his test but you will be well prepared for it. Has concern for students success. Very fair in grading, enjoys surfing and has lot of respect for his mother in law.

Very cool professor, but NOT EASY. He seems very laid back, but is really a stickler underneath it all. That said, he is very fair in grading. Be careful, the first test was a shock! The laid back surfer was gone, and the gestapo had arrived! Very nerve-wracking. Make sure you read the questions! He'll try to trick you!

This prof. is funny and cute and very kind. I did not pass his class, but there were extenuating circumstances. He encouraged me to withdraw due to an injury I had, but I tried to stick it out. Then he encouraged me to appeal for a late W which I am going to do. I would have taken him again but he didn't teach MAC1105 in the summer evenings.

Although math in general is hard for me and I get sick every time I am handed at test. Professor Flax makes it very understandable. He loves surfing but I think that he loves teaching just as much as surfing. Even if he wouldn't admit it. Great professor. My third time taking him.

If you come to class and take notes, most likely it is a guaranteed passing. I hate anything that has to do with math. He makes it understandable and if you are having difficulties he would make sure not to move on with his lesson until everyone in his class understand. You also must have a sense of humor and don't take his jokes personal.

I took this class without any math background. I was nervous about taking math. Dont listen to anyone who rates him poorly. Mr Flax is an outstanding professor. He just doesnt take highschool Bull S&%$. He has a great sense of humor. Flax is willing to help you out if you ask him.

Cool teacher! His sense of humor makes class a lot of fun, but he does know when to be serious. He explains everything & is always willing to help outside of class. Come to class & you shouldn't have a problem. He does lots of examples to help you understand. He gives you plenty of notice on tests and quizzes! Would take him again if I could!

He is a very entertaining person and makes learning fun. he tries and related everything to more realistic factors so you will have a better understading. You do HAVE to read, and study what is writen. Test are easy if you do read and study. Loved every min in his class and would take him for any math class again.

He doesnt care about attendence but if you miss a day you miss important info. A great teacher...algebra is a hard subject and he is very good at teaching it. If you need any help he is always there. You have to study to make a good grade. Overall I found the class interesting. He is also a very fair grader.

Elem Stats: Take any of his classes. He's really bright. Teaches from his head, not the text. You can tell he loves the subject--passionate about teaching. If I didn't get something, he'd come up with a different WAY to explain it. Ya gotta practice what you learn in class with the homework...but it's that way for most math classes.

I understood math for the first time. I am an older student returning and prof. Flax explained everything where I understood. I also gained confidence that I could do well in other classes. Mega chill professor, i have taken trig with a professor before him and got lost 3 weeks in. Willing to help although sometimes he gets a little frustrated if he thinks your not doing your part, i would have taken him for all my maths had i known he was such a good professor, HIGHLY recommended

I just had him this semester, awesome teacher. I attended almost every class because it was FUN to go! Regardless of what others say, I liked hearing about surfing! Math for 3 hours would have been very dull. He held study sessions for us and was great with breaking down what we were learning. I would definitely reccomend him!

First off, I hate Math & am absolutely terrible at it, but I earned a very high A in Flax's Stats class. I'm really unsure why some people said he was unclear and hard to follow. I had no problem following him. I've never been able to find a "GOOD" Math professor, but I finally found one.

Funny and full of jokes. gives every student a nick name in class. really good teacher. he knows his stuff and makes sure you understand it too. i will take him again for any math. if you are nice to him you will do well. surfing and math are the only things he cares about.

Made class fun. Learned more than any other prof. Keeps you engaged the entire time. I miss his class this semester.

I can see how MANY students can think how Mr. Flax is attractive; to me he looks like Tarzan. His three loves are Gypsy, his siamese kitten, surfing, and math, and he obsesses over all three. If you can't read poor handwriting, DON'T TAKE HIM; his handwriting's just as bad as a doctor's (or worse). Otherwise, he is AMAZING. He's really helpful!

I loved this professor. He was funny and kept our learning environment fun. I was not doing so well in the class at first, but ended up with an A at the end of the semester. It is not easy material, though, so you will have to put in some effort. He went out of his way to help and even had study days at Starbucks where you could get help from him.

Flaxx is a chill surfer dude and the class isn't hard at all. He easily gets side tracked and is really funny! There are 4 tests and a final. He assigns HW you dont ever have to turn in. Study and do HW probs before the test and anybody can pass!

Prof. Flax is really cool. He could be a stand up comedian if he wanted to. He teaches math contrary to how the book teaches it..but that made it MUCH easier for me to understand. His tests are pretty hard but he grades them VERY fairly. He's much more concerned that you know the general process. If your answer isn't exactly right, you get credit.

great professor, i've taken him for multiple math classes. makes class fun and jokes around alot, but gets to the point. doesn't use the mymathlab b/s, he actually teaches you everything you need to know himself. tests are based on what you learn in class. attendance is important. DO NOT even TOUCH your cellphone in class. that pisses him off

Took him for trig. Very funny guy, and goes through all the homework. Slow to grade though. While he is funny, he isn't always 100% clear on what he is teaching. He is also very forgetful. Test are all based off problems from the book. four test, a final and two quizzes.

This course quite challenging. Mandatory for student to study each day, use notes from board for tests. Prof Flax was humorous. Tests were fairly difficult, he was adamant about students not using their cell phone (he would freak if he even saw one). Professor Flax was approachable for answering questions. I would recommend him to another student.

Tests were difficult, but I looked forward to class every day- he's a fun professor. He will humiliate you if you are late and a male, so be careful.

I tried taking Stats twice before professor flax. He is an amazing teacher, if you show up to class take good notes you will pass with an A. He hands out reviews prior to the test and the test are basically the same questions on the review. Very easy take him for any math class you need!

Very easy going, don't care if you come to class or not. But of course if you don't come then you won't know the subject.If you study the note in class, the test are very similar. Make sure you have your CELL PHONE on vibrate, or else there will be trouble. Other than that, he is one of the coolest professor I ever had. Will take him again for sure

I've taken him for trig, stat, and pre-calc. By far the best math teacher ever. He makes it so easy to learn and is hilarious. If you struggle with math, take him. You will have no problems as long as you take notes and pay attention every class, you will get an A.

Unorthodox in both looks and method, I was disturbed at first but I've not had a better math teacher in YEARS. Pay attention, do your homework, ask questions, be willing to share your snacks and you'll do fine. Don't let his anecdotes or 'ethics' lectures freak you out. He will meet you half way, but don't expect a free ride.

Hilarious guy. Don't be a guy and be late. No cellphones. Bring your calculator for all tests. I didn't buy a graphing calc and did good. I had one with basic functions. HW and study guides help you pass the tests. Easy going class, feel free to ask questions. I'm taking him again in fall for calc!

For a subject I didn't want to learn, this was the best professor possible. He is smart and passionate about math and teaching. He is hilarious (if you are offended by him you should grow up, and he is also very serious about your success. He expects you to be an adult, so expect to work like one.

I took Professor Flax for MGF1107 as well as Statistics. He is hands down, one of the best, if not THE best, math teachers I have ever encountered. I cannot recommend taking Professor Flax enough for any math course you need to take.

Professor Flax genuinely loves Math, loves to teach and wants you to succeed. He will keep making up examples until everyone understands and he's extremely consistent in his teaching technique. If I had more math classes to take I'd sign up for him again in a heartbeat.

Professor Flax is a great professor who truly loves math and wants to see all of his students succeed! I was intimidated by the course, but, he made class fun and interesting. He made the course easy to understand and was very helpful when things weren't quite so clear. I highly recommend Professor Flax.

Flax is the man. If you plan on taking him for an easy A and to joke around, he will make your life hard. Honestly he is a LOT nicer to girls than guys. But guys can earn a nice reputation with him you just have to try hard. Do NOT take this class if you plan on taking time off. You can't make test up without a doctor's note or if someone dies.

He's HILARIOUS and wacky. Always willing to help. He is nicer to girls but he just picks on guys in a joking manner, he's never rude. His sense of humor is refreshing when you're in a class that would otherwise be dull. I suck at math but I leave class understanding it, I just always have to study for the tests to make a good grade (only 4 tests).

Very funny & laid back. Writes EVERYTHING from lectures on board & tests heavily correlated w/lectures. I would've gotten A if I grasped the 3rd test better. 4 tests=90% (cannot make up so BE THERE)& easy group project=10%. If you're a point away, you get it.. easy grader on tests too. 2 dif grading methods to ensure highest grade possible

This is one of the greatest professor's to ever walk FSCJ's campus. My mom took him a few years ago and highly recommended him. I was lucky enough to get in his class before it filled up and it was the greatest thing to happen to my GPA. He's hilarious and makes class enjoyable. Just don't take your phone out, he will make you cry

I'm currently taking this class & SUCK at any kind of math in general, however Flax has a way of explaining the material and ensures everyone understands before he moves on! 4 tests, no graded homework, an easy A for anyone. Amazing professor, one of my favorite college level math professors. He's very clear, and patient, always making sure everyone is on the same page. Not very strict with homework but assigns regularly. How you do in this class is all dependent on you. He's willing to move mountains with you as long as you come to class & follow his rules.

I have personally taken 32 classes at fscj and he is by far one of the best, if not the best professor I have ever had. At first, you think this guy is kidding the way he carries himself and jokes around. Then, out of nowhere you begin to understand his humor and realize he just may be a genius. Wonderful professor, laughed for an entire semester!

Excellent math instructor. If you are willing to put in the work you will excel in his class. He does not hand out A grade's but will set you up for success and always stays behind to help.

Scott Flax is great! He makes his lectures interesting for the class by putting humor into them. There are 4 exams and lowest is dropped at the end of the term. Also, there are some quizzes that take home and some that due on the day of the exam, which you will turn. Easy class if want to pass by showing up and doing the work. Take this class!

Professor Flax was one of a kind! His test are made up from the problems he wrights on the board. So take great notes and study them. He cracks a lot of jokes and keeps the class conversation interesting. I will take him again for a higher math class if available.

i took this class for trigonometry and he was amazing. i really suck at math and if i could get a high B then so could you. when he says the homework helps trust me it helps. 4 test and 5 quizzes which are easy btw you do it as a group. the test were fine except the third. at the end of the days he's really cool and you would enjoy this class.

Flax is hilarious and makes class entertaining. He talks a lot about surfing. At the same time, he's quite strict about tardiness, missing class, cell phones and grading. He definitely cares for students and has a passion for the subject matter. Show up to class, do the optional homework and study guides and ask for help if you need it.

Great professor! Very clear lectures. Take notes, come to class, & study. You will pass if you put in the work (DONT BE LAZY) miss a couple classes you will fail. Mr. Flax gave 4 grades the whole semester all of which were test. He's laid back, funny and easy to understand. If you've got to take this class he is a great choice!

He's funny, goofy, & LOVES to talk about surfing but he takes complicated info & simplifies it in a way that you can digest it. Missing class is ROUGH because the text & other info will not be broken down with the same ease as his explanation. 4 tests 90% of your grade (will drop highest & lowest if it helps you) & a simple group project is 10%

Prof Flax was AMAZING! I dont see how anyone who takes him could NOT give him a high score. He's hilarious and down to earth. He breaks down the material in a way that anyone could understand. Professor Flax is AMAZING! I do not go to FSCJ but I am taking this course during summer to receive credit. I was initially scared to take the course but I now enjoy going to class, yes I said enjoy! I have never struggled with math but the hard topics he breaks down and makes it easy to understand, and he is HILARIOUS. 110% recommend him!

Professor Flax is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is really good at explaining the material and he will not move on in his lectures until everyone understands what he is talking about. He made calculus easy and the class fun. I have not finished the class yet but I will most likely be receiving an A, I usually do horrible at math.

Flax is so chill. Surfer dude for sure. Go to his class and you will pass. You feel like you don't do much in his class, but you actually learn a lot. He's good at making class fun and making it go by quickly (partially because hes so funny and talks about the most random things). He doesn't care whether or not you show up but I would (its math...)

This man is the real deal. He disarms you with humor, and calms any anxiety, fear, or self-doubt you may have with his laid back, down to earth demeanor, approachability & willingness to help you. He's fair, but not a pushover. Do the hw, ask questions, & you will pass. I struggle with anxiety, & I would take him again in a heartbeat If I could.

Do not have your cell phone on in class. He will deduct points from your next test.

Professor Flax gives amazing lectures and will really make sure you understand the material before he moves on to the next topic. There are four tests and a group project, and he will do everything he can to make sure you succeed. There is no mandatory homework, but he always gives practice problems and reviews for the tests.

He is very clever, fair, easy going, and highly responsive. He sets about month long due dates in between assignments and exams and will allow these tests to be done at home without proctoring. He makes sure you show the work so you cannot cheat using google. Learn from this class it is truly beneficial in everyday life unlike most math classes

If math is hard for you take this teacher. Took this course instead of College algebra and I do not regret it at all. We had 15 homework assignments, and four teast all based off of your notes from class. He explains everything VERY well. He's intelligent and mathematically inclined so he can teach the class the best ways to learn a topic.

I took Mr. Flax for Explorations in Mathematics (MGF 1107) & Elementary Statistics (STA 2023). These were my first two college classes, and I would take him again a thousand times. If you find a negative comment here is because they want a class where they don't have to do anything lol. This is the first math professor that is actually easy to understand and motivates you to attend to classes. You never get bored with him and that's difficult to accomplish in a math class!

Professor Flax is great explaining Math concepts. I struggle in Math, but his style of teaching helps you relax. He tells humor throughout the lecture and it really doesn't impact learning, but makes it fun. I like that he gives his students his full support and all he ask is that you come to class and no cellphones. Great professor!

I feel like you either love Flax or you hate him. He doesn't click with everyone. He is a little unorganized but he's a great teacher if you don't love math. He is good at explaining concepts, and he's a funny guy albeit a little repetitive. Homework is optional and tests weigh heavily. It's manageable and has no busy work.

Calc is a very hard class in itself, however, Prof Flax made it enjoyable unlike other math classes I've taken. This was the first "virtual" class we did (due to COVID), and participation was expected. The tests are majority of the grade so it is important to ensure you're paying attention along the way. Otherwise, it was a fun class to take!

One thing I can say about this teacher is that it was very amazing he gave us extra points because of the Covid-19. Very great lecture he gave all of us I really enjoyed the class.

I love Dr. Flax! Extremely nice and caring and allows you to work ahead. Assigns homework and makes exams based off the homework, just different numbers. Responds to emails readily and definitely answers your questions. He also subbed for my stats class once and was awesome at teaching the content! Superb professor!

You are able to work on your own pace however you still have deadlines. Assignments are clear and one low test score is dropped. I made a C due to being out due to Covid and not completing earlier assignments. Stay focus and on task and this is an easy A class.

If you go to every lecture, you will most likely be able to pass with an A or B. Professor Flax makes learning calculus real easy. Homework is right what you should expect from a math course. This was definitely one of my favorite maths classes that I have taken.

I was a bit nervous before starting this class as Calculus has a reputation for being hard. However, Professor Flax is the most laid back surfer dude that just happens to do math and makes it look easy. Breaks it down and explains each step with multiple examples, none of that "you guys should have learned this in high school".

Extremely helpful and willing to work with students. Generous with grades as long as work as shown. Responds promptly to email and will stay with students after lectures if they have something to discuss.

Made a three hour calculus class enjoyable (entertaining). He explained the material in a very clear manner.

I commented below, but wanted to add another comment. Two tests were given in MyMathLab and two tests were take home tests. Prof. Flax is a very light grader and gives a lot of partial credit. I preferred the take home tests over MML.

I took the online class and it was easy. Five tests and the lowest test score gets dropped. I always received an immediate response when I asked for help. Great teacher.

His notes are often relatable(the examples given) and very clear for studying. By test day could naturally solve problems without overthinking and doubting. Math lab is a joke compared to in person!

I've always disliked taking math courses, but Dr. Flax is honestly one of the very best instructors I've ever had. He is extremely knowledgeable and engages all of the students. I only wish he was teaching MGF 1107 so that I can enjoy his teaching for another semester.

Prof Flax is a cool sufer vibe professor, if you attend class then you will pass, he explains things differently and in my opinion easier than my mathlab, if you do his work the way mymathlab wants and not how he teaches, you will struggle in the exams. Tells you which questions type will be on the test, only 4 exams and optional final. take him!

This was a really difficult class, but I do believe he really cares about teaching in a way students will learn. Some hw assignments for every chapter but majority of grade was the (4) exams, and optional final.

I've struggled in math classes all of my life thanks to a mix of ADHD and dyscalculia. This was the first time that I understood every single lecture I sat in on. Prof. Flax will go out of his way to teach you not just the 'how' but the 'why' of statistics so that you fully understand the work you're doing. Patient, funny, charming, 10/10.

Great professor. I had to withdraw from Trig the first time I took it due to utter confusion. Prof Flax helped me get a 95 through his entertaining and efficient lectures. Homework is not too tough and he will take off any problems he didnt cover. Drops the lowest exam or averages your highest and lowest for final grade. Opt final. Best prof here

Took this class as my last math in A.A. MyMathLab is all you will use, and the homework prepares you for the test. Did not need the professor for anything all semester. You can work at your own pace as the assignments are available day 1. Only negative is 3 tests made up for 66% of the class.

I took Scott Flax for the Calculus for Business class. He teaches very well, very clear, goes over things multiple times and is always asking if there are any questions, makes sure to clarify everything. The homework is on MyMathLab, but all the tests are in person and there will be nothing on the test that he did not actually teach in the class.

If you're bad at math, take his class. Prof. Flax truly makes math easy to understand and genuinely cares about how well you grasp the material. He jokes alot which makes time fly during lectures. The homework and tests were easy as long as you don't miss lectures, and his grading criteria is very clear. I def recommend!

Really great professor! The one thing I don't like is he tends to get off track easily. When that happens, it takes a little bit for him to get back on track. While attendance is not mandatory, it is recommended. He may even boost your grade at the end of the semester if you attend every class. It is very clear that he wants you to succeed.

He cares about his students and wants to ensure that everyone understands the questions for the test. There are 4 tests which are not too difficult if you take good notes. If you do better on the final, it will replace your lowest test grade.

Professor Flax is awesome. Super great sense of humor, there is never a dull moment in class with him. Doesn't go super in-depth on topics, but makes sure you understand them. Medium workload. My main complaint is that his written tests have many mistakes in them and are different from the practice tests provided.

If you struggle with math like me, please beware of taking it online! I survived by the skin of my teeth. I reached out to him a few times and he was extremely helpful. He drops the lowest test score out of 3, then averages the 2. It's worth 65% of your grade. It's survivable to take online but do so at your own risk! I wish I took it in person.

Great professor, I did online mgf and if I hadn't previously taken mgf and had good notes, I would have had a hard time, you just login and do the work, but he drops lowest test which is a big help. Definitely recommend this of all general math's, it's like little bits off the topics. Take the test reviews, a big help.

Do yourself a favor and take his class in person! His teaching methods are clear and easy to follow, and the workload is very manageable. There are four tests (if you practice with the homework, the tests aren't hard). The final is optional if you're happy with your grade.

I took this class with him a couple years ago, but till this day I still think back about the topics and concepts I learned from him that have helped me tremendously in this current semester while taking stats 2. I took him with friends while in high school and he created a encouraging, funny learning environment, I can't remember ever being bored.
