GREAT prof. i actually learn something in his class! he's super nice and understanding. the only prof. I like this semester!
Very good professor!! I really liked him! He really wants you to do well if you tell him your having a problem with doing the homework on time he understands. He tells you exactly what to expect on the exams. There are take home practice tests that are a big part of your exam grade. Which helped alottt. I hated math and he made me appreciate it.
He is a great professor. He knows the material very well and he knows how to explain it. He grades very fairly. he goes very fast on his lectures and you must make sure you follow him. When students ask him the same questions twice, sometimes he gets irritated, but he undestands students after all.I pesonally think he has a good future at Hunter.
Great teacher, very clear, and very fair. I'm glad I got into his math 125 this semester.
all i have to say is that he is an AWESOME Professor and person. His lessons are crystal clear, and better than any math professor in hunter to my knowledge. If you are thinking of taking him, don't think DO IT! his classes fill up real quick. He is very understanding in anything that you ask as long as your requests aren't completely ridiculous.
Best math professor in hunter! So glad he moved here from the west coast. He definitely is a great help with anything you ask of him. Responds to emails almost immediately. Not a boring teacher, has a sense of humor. Calculus the subject is just hard it self but he is a great teacher. I have taken him 2 semesters and don't regret it. TAKE HIM!
Literally the best professor I've had at Hunter. Calculus is a hard subject but he makes you understand it, plus he is very lenient as well. He explains the material thoroughly so that you can understand it, he gives practice tests before the actual tests so you know what's on the exam. Overall this professor is great and I would def recommend him.
AMAZING PROFESSOR,his course content is very organized and this is something I really appreciate. When you email him he responds asap. He is very clear when he is teaching, CRYSTAL CLEAR, and that is definitely a plus as certain topics in math can be hard to grasp at first. He is far from boring, his little jokes help too. a very fair grader.TAKEHIM
He is a very good teacher. But he is extremely fast and doesn't appreciate having to repeat himself. His class is a lot of work but the payoff is huge. His class was continuously ahead of the others. He is also very funny, and very sarcastic but truly cares and it shows through his snarkyness.
GREAT prof, and so clear and helpful. I hated precalculus and calculus in high school, but now I've gotten two A's in a row and really feel like I understand it. Some of the material is hard and there's a lot to cover but Scott makes it totally doable for any one. Take him!
Amazing professor, just do the H.W and you will get a good grade in that class. Can't be anymore simpler.
He's an awesome professor! Calculus is a hard topic but he manages to explain things clearly. He might breeze by things so a lot of studying needs to be done on your own. Take him if you want to have a good understanding of calculus!
GREAT PROFESSOR! He is not by any means hard, because he would tell you exam problem difficulty, and even outline every exam! He is sarcastic and really cares about the students' grades! I really want him to teach calc 2-3-and Vector but unfortunately hes only reserved for calculus... USE HIM WELL!
The best!! I never would've gotten through Precalculus or Calculus without him.
The best professor. Ever. He makes the textbook obsolete. He is a genius and an excellent educator, and he teaches with the student in mind. He takes great care to prepare the student for his exams. He has a gift for explaining the material, and his level of organization is astounding. I wouldn't dream of taking a math class with anyone else
The easiness rating comes from his great ability to explain the material and organization which ALL the other Calc teachers @ Hunter lack. The text is completely useless. Go to class, do the HW, go the PS, and utilize the lab tutors and you will do fine.
Great professor! really cares for his students and is very responsible! calculus has never been a better experience
Scott is the nicest professor but very stern. He is very helpful and i hated math prior to this class and ended up with an A-. There are 4 exams and a final which counts as two exams and he drops the lowest score.
He doesn't thoroughly explain the material and just expects you to know things beforehand. If you ask a question he gets mad. His humor sucks and I just didn't like him. He thinks he's funny but he's just boring. Utilize the problem sessions, the textbook, and tutoring labs if you want to pass. And do the homework.
AMAZING prof! Take notes, do homework! He curves, very lenient. At the beginning, I thought I would have gotten a B in the course, but I ended up getting an A (due to all the generous curves!) wooooo. Only bad thing is he can pick up speeed... and that will confuse you a bit.
Prof Gentile made Precalculus a much better experience than I was expecting. He's very clear, helpful and organized, and always lets you know exactly what to expect. Come to class, do the homework, and you'll have no problems. I want to take him for Calculus too if I can get into his class.
He likes to make 3 points very evident throughout the semester: (A) He must speed through and cover the required material, so 1-2 questions tick him off (B) "Go to tutoring" (C) and he loves to refer to his reviews on here ... like cmon man, anwsering a few questions won't hurt vs shooing us off to tutoring
clear, funny, and he really cares that you do well. I never got so much out of a math class before. listen to his advice and you'll do fine. take him!
THE BEST, period. I had calculus twice before and FINALLY feel like I got it!
He is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He thoroughly goes through the chapters;even teaching you things you don't need to know just so you can benefit from it. He is very organized; follows the syllabus 100%. Before each exam, he gives a review sheet which looks similar to the test. Pay attention in class, do hw, and you will be fine.
150 isn't that hard of a course, but if you are taking it at Hunter, hope that you registered for Gentile's section. He is passionate about the subject.U se the DMLC if you need help. Textbook is pretty useless, but you need the online homework code. Do all your homework. Tests are fair. If he's stressed though, be prepared to learn on your own.
I think he's the best calc professor!! Take him, you wont regret it. But do the questions in the back of the book
Definitely one of the hottest professors at Hunter, but that's not all. He is a wonderful professor who sincerely cares about the subject he teaches, and he takes the class very seriously. It is a difficult class, but he is always more than willing to help a student in need. I've never had a better teacher than him. His looks are a bonus! ;)
Being this the second time I took calc I can definitely say Gentile made all the difference. His way of breaking down complex topics and simplifying them really made things better. He cares about his students and is considerate. There are times where he might rush a bit and be unclear. I highly recommend him!
the best math teacher i've ever had by far! very doable workload, fair tests, and he gives partial credit
He is the best math prof in Hunter, no doubt about that. Prior to taking his class, I read the review over here and I was not disappointed. I had 5 hour gap between my class because I really wanted to take his class.Trust me, it was worth it. He is the first teacher I've ever met who tries to make you understand math & he has a great sense of humor
Took him for hybrid summer session. It was 6 weeks, 2x/week , 2 exams, online HW & quizzes. Aced the class after failing it twice with 2 other professors. Rushed alot and didn't really like answering questions since we had very little time, but he still taught well. He's one of the few Calc professors at Hunter w/ good reviews for a reason. Take him
The hybrid class meets once a week so if your not a quick learner don't take it cause Gentile goes through the sections pretty quick. Hw and quizzes are mandatory. The first exam is a lot easier than the second. Meanwhile, the final is hard (Good Luck). Calculus is not easy, be prepared to put in a lot of time and you will pass. Pro txtbk is free!
HW's and Quizzes are just a diversion to keep you from preparing for his exams. Stick to the free textbook and lecture notes, the rest is just a smoke screen, but it's mandatory..
He is a pair prof. take a note and practice a lot using the note and online homework. also the text book would help you a lot. go to him during the office hour, he is good
The best math teacher. Very rushed pace. Exams are light. HW/online quizzes are purposely made killller. His philosophy is "you learn math by doing, not on tests." (he's right) HW/quizzes are insanely difficult and time consuming. I once spent 8 hours on one quiz. Usually spent 2 hours on hw. Though plenty of extra credit. Helpful teacher, however.
Great teacher. Explains the material very clearly. He wants you learn.
He's amazing, yes he's fast but he is clear. Come to class! Tests are totally fair & he is funny. He doesn't like stupid questions but still answers. Go to Dociani if you need help. HW is due a week after he finishes a unit. He is passionate and if you're good at math and go to class you'll get a minimum of A- Btw this was my first time taking calc
A girl from my class told me the first day of class the S. Gentile is the best math professor at hunter.. and she was absolutely right. He is VERY clear, LOVES his subject, LOVES his job, is a very cool guy and one of the MOST helpful professors I ever had especially when it does to a stressful class like calculus.
He is a real educator. He takes his career seriously which benefits his students tremendously. He is outstanding at what he does and one of the best professors overall. He motivates students, builds their confidence and presents the material in a way that is pretty much completely understandable. He is available for all questions during office hrs
This is a professor that takes Calculus and deconstructs it in a way that makes it manageable to grasp the first or second time around. Clear, concise, and generous with his tests, he's the cream of the crop when it comes to professors. If you want him to explain something in detail, you'll have to visit him during office hours, but it's worth it.
He is an absolutely amazing professor, you really cannot ask for anyone better. TAKE HIM. Although remember that the class material itself is relatively difficult, and he gives you all the opportunity and material to learn it!
He is absolutely one of the best math professors Hunter has. While the material was difficult (as any calculus course would be), he made his expectations and the material very clear. He doesn't focus on tests that punish you, so much as reward you for what you know. His office hours are also great if you have any questions.
He really is a fantastic professor. He knows what he's talking about, and helps you understand the material. He gives you multiple chances to bump up your grade, helping you get an A in the class. I would definitely recommend taking him.
The best math teacher I've had by far! I had to drop calc last time because I couldn't understand it at all but even with a huge class Prof. Gentile made it totally clear. It's still a hard class but totally doable. Take him!
One of the best and most knowledgeable professor of Calculus. Very clear, knows the subject crystal clear and delivers it well to the students. Perfectionist, and wants his students to do extremely well. It's still calculus, so you will have to work for it, but I highly recommend taking his class, you won't regret it!
awesome calc teacher! come to class , study all the notes, do the homework and you'll be fine. his lectures are clear and really help prepare you for his exams
just take notes and pay attention in class and you'll do really well. He will really help you prepare for calc 2
I really enjoyed his class and he is a GEM of a person. He gets down to business as-soon-as he walks in the classroom and was always helpful. He will solely test you on what he teaches you--something many professor cannot seem to do. Beware of that departmental final though! For a minute, I wondered if they gave me the wrong exam. Go figure.
Definitely the BEST lecturer at Math Department from Hunter! Every single second of his class is worth your focus, effort and of course, your tuition fees! Almost thought of switching my major to Math just to take him again in the future! He was THAT fantastic! Take good notes, review them, practice the examples from textbook - you'll be good!
I went into this class with little to no knowledge from calculus 1. That being said, he made the transition smooth and doable, it's a hard class because it's more advanced math. But honestly I think this professor was MORE than fair when grading exams, and was VERY considerate. He's also an absolutely AMAZING lecturer, do yourself the honor please.
He teaches so mechanically and it's like watching the textbook talking without the option of a replay button. I understand there are many topics to cover, but answering few questions wouldn't hurt I suppose.
The clearest math teacher I ever had! I never understood trig in high school but now I get it and feel like I'm ready for calculus.
BEST MATH TEACHER! His lectures are crystal clear and he tests you exactly based on what he teaches. He provides practice exams and EC opportunities for all 4 exams, and curves the last hardest exam. If you don't do well its truly your fault for not studying because he does everything to help you. Not the easiest A, but definitely achievable.
Probably the best math professor at Hunter! Wish he taught more courses! He conveys the material clearly and he is very helpful if anyone asks for it.
Without a doubt the best professor in the math department at Hunter. His tests are very similar to the problems he works through in class, and he does a thorough job in his explanations. He's very fair and respectful to students as long as you treat him the same.
Never actually met the professor but this class is very easy. I took this online and the lessons and homework are very thorough and prepare you for the quizzes and tests very well. You get unlimited tries on homework and 3 tries on tests and quizzes which make it easy to get a good grade. As long as you do you work you should have no problem.
He's a great teacher, great personality. The exams got the worst in me though.
For a Hybrid class, he was a great professor when we did meet once a week. He knows what he's doing. He is organized and strict on grading yet lenient and very understanding. I do not recommend a hybrid class to anyone taking calculus for the first time.
Scott is one of the best professors at Hunter. I took Calc1 with a different prof. and he was horrible so I switched to his class. Class is not an easy A but totally doable, especially if you want to understand the material or need it for other classes. He makes his tests in a way that reflect the final to prepare you and is a very lenient grader.
If it was possible, I always would have taken his class for the rest of my college years for any kind of math course. His explanation and tests are clear. He also offers a lot of extra credits.
He is the best Calc professor that Hunter has! He curves the tests by a fair amount of points, online homework on every section, 3 tests and one final. His explanations are so clear! You really learn a lot from him! Attendance isn't mandatory technically but you need to go to class to understand the material because the textbook is confusing
HIS IN-CLASS EXAMS NOTHING LIKE THE FINAL, THE FINAL SAVES YOUR GRADE AS IT COUNTS AS DOUBLE MAKE SURE TO GET 100'S ON IN-CLASS EXAMS AND PERFECT SCORE ON FINAL AND GET PERFECT HW AVERAGE!!!
Scott Gentile is the best Math Professor! Clear lectures and fair exams and grades very generously. He doesn't make the final exam but his tests are similar to help you prepare. The common final is brutal so take his advice and work hard to get good grades during the semester. You can def get an A or B if you listen to him and take good notes!
took this class online and it's pretty easy. homework and quizzes are online, 3 attempts on each quiz and he keeps the best score. the final is easy if you study the practice questions
I previously failed calc with another prof. so this class was very surprising. Prof. Scott explained the concepts that made sense to me. The class only met once a week so we only had 2 midterms, 6 online quizzes(based on HW) that made up the third midterm grade, and the department final. He does everything to give you the best grade possible.
Never take this professor for Math 102. I had him and all he did was read off the PowerPoints that he posted on MyMathLab. The quizzes and tests are based off material thats provided on MyMathLab, and some of the material dont appear on the PowerPoints he reads off of in class, so you have to figure the questions out yourself. Somewhat boring.
I'm terrible at math but I loved this class! It's mostly stuff you can actually use like investing. Prof Gentile tells you exactly what you need to know for every test, gives lots of practice problems and chances to get a good grade. Four chapter tests, midterm that counts x2 and final x3, but he drops the TWO lowest grades. Take him
Best calc professor ever
I needed a math class to graduate and took this one because it was online so you don't have to come to class. mr. gentile give you lots of flexibility and chances to get a good grade. the homework and videos really help you prepare for the quizzes. Definitely recommend it if you need math 102
Easily one of the few STEM professors at Hunter who genuinely cares about getting the best possible grade for students.
Calculus was one of the hardest math classes I've ever taken and it would've been more difficult if Professor Gentile was not my professor. I took a hybrid class and we only met once a week so you have a lot of time to study. Two major tests, 1 final that counts as 2 tests. Lowest gets dropped. Do all the homework too because it adds up.
I took him for Math150 last semester too. If he was teaching the entire Maths curriculum I am sure that I would choose Maths as my major. Come to class everyday , take notes, practice and make sure to do all the homework and get 100% that way you are assured to at least a C. The tests are straight forward and you are allowed a cheat sheet.
Makes a hard class doable
WONDERFUL MATH PROFESSOR!! Honestly one of the, if not THE best professor to teach calculus. It is my third time taking this class, and the way he teaches helped me immensely in finally understanding the concepts and the WHY of calculus. Even though the style of the class is a bit trying if you're not ready to work on your own, he's amazing.
Definitely overrated but still a good professor. His exams are pretty tough but he gives some good lectures. He's not a magician. Pretty much the same applies to him that it does to 95% of other math professors. If you are good at math, you'll do great and if you are bad at math, you'll continue being bad at math. His review sheets don't help much.
Wants you to do well and makes it possible. Never thought I'd get through Calc but I did
Honestly, an amazing professor. Explains concepts so clearly and makes things really understandable. 10/10 would recommend.
He tries his best to help you pass. Gives so much extra credit. If you have previous knowledge of calculus, this class will be a breeze.
Liked this class more than I thought I would. He makes it easy to understand. Three tests and a final.
Final is really important to make sure to do really well in that, no matter what.
Best choice for calc if you can get into his section
Best professor at Hunter. He is not only understanding but also very knowledgeable. Since this is a hybrid class, it would be good if you either know pre-calc well or are capable of teaching yourself. Attend his lectures to know strategies and tricks to apply the concepts. Otherwise, do well on the first exam and the final (to balance your grade)
Very knowledgeable, understanding, reasonable , and funny. Was a pleasure taking his class.
Scott Gentile is a great professor. He makes the class easy to learn and understand. I took Matrix Algebra with him and his exams were exactly like the homework and review problems he gives you before the exam. Take him for any math class you can find!
Took him in 2011. He was an amazing teacher. You don't need to read the book at all as long as you pay attention in his classes. He has a unique ability to make math easy, and is interesting to listen to. He's sassy but passionate about teaching and will work hard to help you learn. I thought his exams were fair.
He is one of the best math professors at Hunter. Please take him for calc 150 and you wont regret. He curves the grade towards the end of the class. Also one exam counts as 4 online quizzes which are easy.
BEST math prof at Hunter! I've taken MATH150 3 times, but I actually learned and understand calc from his amazing lectures. He's perfect with time management, doesn't go too slow or fast. 5 exams, drops lowest, & online HW. He's also really hilarious! Given you put in the work & pay attention, expect at least a B! Wish he taught science too lol
I am glad that I happened to take this class with professor Gentile during quarantine. While other classes had easy quizzes instead of real exams, we still had to take challenging but doable exams which made me actually learn calculus.
When taking the class you can tell that Prof. Gentile wants his students to succeed. During the quarantine he gave great feedback and encouragement for us to do well. Most of the class ended up getting As. Wish I would have taken calc with him sooner, the content is still difficult but his lectures/online videos are great. BEST TEACHER AT HUNTER!!
HE is AN INCREDIBLE PROFESSOR. MAKES concepts so easy, truely a gem. Very understanding and accommodating. The only reason I was able to get through CAL was with his positive attitude.
I don't even know if I'm allowed to review him since he technically never taught me. His online course consisted entirely of Khan Academy videos... it sure was fun to pay $1.5k to access a course that's already available for free online. I don't doubt he's a great teacher, but I didn't get to experience that in "his" online class.
I was worried about taking Calculus over the summer but Professor Gentile got me through it. He's always available and very helpful.
He is one of the best calculus professor at Hunter. if you get a chance please take him. He was so considerate during the covid-19 situation and made everything easier. Only attended his class for 6 weeks before everything went online but his lectures were amazing and I understood everything.
Professor Gentile always reminded the students of the work they had to do but didn't have office hours before the pandemic but always responded to emails. If there was an error with the computer or a glitch he can somethings send an annoyed email but overall he is an okay professor.
I was worried about taking this class online but professor gentile was always available, gave great explanations and made it doable. Definitely take him if you can. HIs classes fill up fast.
Good class, not too much work
Professor Gentile is the best. So attentive and helpful during the pandemic. I wish he was teaching Cal 2.
Professor Gentile helps whenever you need it and is very flexible. This is the best class for completing the math requirement.
Just trust me and take him for Calc 1. Curves slightly and easy to reach out to. Guaranteed A- or above.
I was lucky enough to have him for 2 of my math classes at hunter and he is truly an incredible professor who actually cares if you learn stuff. he is an easy grader and even if he were a hard grader, he makes the material so digestible it wouldn't matter.
He was like the only person who acknowledged the pandemic and outside responsibilities students have. Easy to talk to, replied to emails within a few hours even on weekends, able to explain things very well. Multiple attempts on quizzes and exams (except final). There isn't a single reason why you should not take him.
He is the one to take for any math class, just take him! You will not going to be regret! Trust me!!
Took an asynchronous class but the work is super easy and he gives lots of materials, he's also so timely with emails and communicates amazingly! The grading is all on Lumen so you never have to guess what you are going to get
Take this class if math is not your strong suit! It is SUPER clear, organized and has so many examples provided that you can use for all of the assignments. I'm so glad i took this as my math credit.
Math will never be my strong suit, and I will always have a strong dislike for it. However, if you need to take a math course, PLEASE take this one. Everything was quick and easy to complete, not stressful at all. Professor Gentile was always accessible and caring, and never assigned a lot. This class is an easy A, even if math isn't for you.
Took his async fully, online class, for an EZ elective during the summer. The grading criteria were super clear. We used Lumen; there were 6 modules - 30% HW, 30% Chap Test, 30% two midterms, & 10% Final Exam. He allows multiple attempts for almost everything except the final. He also gave us 4 late passes. Super lenient and straightforward prof.
Super easy course. Fully online. Super nice. He emails you when things are due a few days before. You have 3 tries on the quizzes and multiple tries on the homework. The final even had more than 3 attempts. No attendance required. Never met on zoom. The final even allows u to have a cheat sheet (one paper, 2 sides). learn from lumen vids
THE GOAT. If you suck at math take him, he's your guardian angel, your saving grace. Explains every topic so smoothly and goes the extra mile. Cracks a silly joke every now and then too. Exams reflect the homework and he gives exam review sheets. Zero complaints. He makes a hard subject as comprehensible as it can be.
Amazing professor. He is caring. His lectures are great. Make sure to do the review paper that he gives because the test will be very much like it. He tells you what will be on the test and on the test its exactly like it. Gives extra credit on the test.
Best professor ever. Go to office hours if you don't understand something! He's more than willing to help you out with anything you do not understand. He gives extra credit on exams, and his review exams are very helpful! I wish he taught Calculus 2 but I definitely feel prepared for what's to come
Really easy class if you're looking to fulfill your math credit, the teacher is lenient and gives extra credit opportunities. The final test was 15 questions and you get to bring a double sided note sheet. Just try to stay on top of assignments or else it will pile up. You can do lots ahead of time!
final in person, need at least 55% to pass course. entire class is done on lumen with reasonable deadlines. 5 late passes. might be opportunity to redo assignments, one chance of extra credit given for first assignment early completion. just be ready to dedicate some time to the assignments and learning the material. cheat sheet for final allowed
So this professor is really sweet and wants you to do good but I honestly learned nothing from the class. There were many chances given for extra credit so definitely take advantage of everything given. Exams were 85% but still better than other classes where it was 90%.
Does provide extra credit but tests heavy
I barely went to class because it was not useful at all. I mostly had to learn everything on my own. the tests and homework were difficult.
Gentile was a slightly harsh grader. While his exams were fair, with content we went over in class or on homework problems, he would put tricky things on the exam, or take one too many points over silly errors. However, his teaching style was great. This was an easy course, and he made content clear. He was always available outside of class.
Great, caring, and very clear professor. Gives review sheets before each exam and is always available to answer questions. Take him if you can get into his class.
I recently had to choose one of this teacher who lacks the ability to transmit knowledge in a pedagogical manner. The teacher lacks skills or even interest in the subject they are trying to teach us.
Gentile is the best. This was my second time taking Calculus and now I feel like I get it.
I'm not sure where to start. The fact that I'm writing a review mid-semester speaks for itself. This class is stressful and, honestly, not worth it. Avoid his classes!!!
Very clear and flexible online class. Multiple attempts at the tests and you only have to come to campus for the final. Prof. Gentile is available to answer questions every day. Highly recommend!
Great class, not much work or stress and no surprises.
scot genftile is best and always kept the class interested!
great online class with no pop quizzes or any other surprises. scott's very flexible and understanding and an easy grader. definitely take any of his classes if you can get in. they fill up fast!
Gentile's the best choice for Calc by far. Wish he taught 155.
The GOAT - trust me, just take him.
Study. I cannot stress that enough. Tests are 90% of your grade, and it can be really easy to fall behind in this class. Go to lectures, study for hours, do homework.
soctt gentfile is very nice and knowledgeable however he's not that good as a professor. I have missed one homework and he doesn't allow remakes. Responds to emails fast but just gives one sentence responses.
He responds to emails quickly but only give one sentence. He was not good at all in helping me when I had issues I needed to address with them. The criteria for the class is clear and as long as you do good on the hw, quizzes, and pass the final you'll be fine. All you need is at least 55% on the final which is in person to pass the class.
This class was online asynchronous, so I did not have direct interaction with him. However, the class was not hard at all, and he gave us a lot of extensions. As long as you watch the videos and the lessons you will pass the course. The final is only 10% of the class, and you are allowed a cheat sheet. I totally recommend him.
Was asynchronous but he was very helpful when I needed him.
My background is not in math and I think that was pretty clear in class, but Professor Gentile was still more than helpful, understanding, and explanatory. Would 100% recommend.
Challenging course, but Professor Gentile explains concepts clearly. Attend lectures, study hard, and utilize resources like the free textbook and tools like Unstuck study for study prep. Worth taking to learn Calc well.
He replies to emails extremely quickly.
Class was async, but he emailed to remind students of deadlines and would check in very frequently. He sporadically gives extra credit to those who complete assignments at least a day in advance. Final is open-notes. Easiest A+ of my life, and I hate math.
He is ok. I do not like that he gives us a lot of homework.
His hws were very easy and you don't need to spend that much that to be able to learn the topics. And It was also very nice of him to remind us of the deadlines of the Hws.
