one of the best teachers I've had in three years of school...
Take this teacher at all cost.
Hands down the best programming teacher there is at GVSU, very funny & friendly
Very good Prof. He works hard to keep the entire class interested.
Good teaching skills/if you don't want to learn: may God have mercy on your soul
This man is brilliant, yet connects with students. One of my best profs yet.
Do what you have to to get in his class. Best CS/IS Prof there is!!
doesn't know the language enough to teach it. doesn't offer much help.
Scott is the man!! He really connects with his students and makes class fun.
Wish he'd slow down and actually teach, leaves you in the dust...

262 is hard.... but this guy makes it as easy as it can be... great teacher!!!!
Don't get him for Graphics. Friendly but stubborn.Thinks arrays start at 1!
Great CS prof. Does lots of in-class demos that help.
VERY hard tests to my opinion, but he knows the stuff, unlike the rest of profs
I did not like his tests, the rest if ok.
Very funny
yes, 262 is hard but he gives you the knowledge to make it on your own. awesome!
He will not just give you the answers, encourages you to think it out.
Best CS Prof around. Take him at all costs
ask the right questions, he will answer them, otherwise you are on your own

Run very fast! Don't take you will be sorry.
Dedicated and concerned, however all tests are poorly designed and very difficul
Everything's Good, EXCEPT essay questions on CS exam??? SHAME SHAME
I think he does an excellent job of explaining concepts. Very understanding
assumes the students are advanced, fair otherwise, very passionate, hard tests
he's fun but i would recommend more examples/ less theory. not the best/worst
Good Teacher, blinks alot but knows his stuff

Graphics is an AWESOME class. Fun no matter who teaches. Very good with explaining concepts. projects are fun (but long). I agree with previous comment. Essay question on CS EXAM? shame shame. bull !@#$ing on exam will not get you a good grade
Fun class. Not easy. Knows his stuff, maybe too well. Wierd exams, though.

The tests sucked, and he didn't want to help girls. He is very ****.
Really good teaching style, asked us how WE wanted to be assessed, so we had no final! Take this class, its the best one I've every taken, really fun.
He is by far one of the best profs i have had. he is hard grader, but you learn so much. he doesn't ****-foot around with the basic java stuff, that's why 162 is a prereq.
Awesome teacher, he is the best in the world! He is funny, and clear. I highly reccomend him.
Excellent professor. You can tell he's really interested in teaching, the material, and the students' well-being. Really nice guy, very reasonable, and comes up with great "surprises" and incentives when it comes to grading. It can be really hard class if you're not a geek, but he makes it bearable.
He is a good eacher and is interested in student learning. He does a good job of using humor within the lectures. Not a lot of lectures. Assignments are straight forward and clear. Very reasonable grader.
"Program is frustrating" -- Scott Grissom. That pretty much says it all. He knows a lot about Java, but you're pretty much on your own if you get stuck in his class. Better than a lot of other profs at this school though. My advice: avoid 162 if not a major.
Grissom is tough but fair. He makes you work hard for your grade, which turns some people off to him. Overall, he is an excellent professor who is interested in his students doing well. BTW, Ohio State sucks!
Quality Prof. overall. Makes class enjoyable and has a great sense of humor. He is willing to give help if you just ask or email. As long as you write down what he writes on the board it really isn't too bad. I love this stuff so it was a great class for me and wasn't too difficult. I would recommend him whether you like this stuff or not.
Not the easiest prof, not the funnest class, but he prepares you well for 163.
Easily one of my favorite professors. Kept me interested through the entire semester and I only wish he taught more CS classes. Would highly recommend him to any student who takes 162. He is quick in responding to emails and willing to work with you after class. GREAT prof
Very picky about grading and the way you right code. Not the easiest but not the hardest teacher in the world.
Explains the concepts very well in discussion. Lets you figure things out by yourself in lab so you'll have to work hard. His tests can be tricky and sometimes slightly too hard. The tests are also very hard to finish within the time limits given.
I did very much enjoy taking this class with Scott Grissom, Michigan professor of the year 2008. Expect to put in a lot of work, but have a lot of fun in class. He's always willing to extend due dates or lessed the work load at the end of the semester. You should definitely take this class with Scott Grissom, Michigan professor of the year 2008.
Very good professor. Just had him for CS 162, the intro course, and he does an excellent job of explaining a very difficult subject to learn at first. His expectations are a little high but his willingness to help makes up for it. I have had a lot of professors in the past in other schools and easily one of the best. Really cares about teaching.
Anybody interested in going into CS or CIS should definitely take CIS 162 with Grissom. He's passionate about teaching and always explains concepts very well. Just make sure you understand the concepts before attempting projects. He does answer questions in class though so don't be afraid to ask.
Awesome!!
Tries very hard to make class fun/enjoyable. Seems to be fair across skill levels of students. Puts in extra time (meeting students on the weekend) to help out with projects
Tough class. Professor Grissom expects a lot and grades tough. Exams are hard. Study, make sure you understand the concepts, and attend class! Take advantage of office hours!
the class is naturally a hard class and there is a lot expected but he is very helpful and tries to make class fun!
This guy is awesome. He makes you want to come class and read what's assigned afterwords. He turns something that can be difficult and boring like code into something fun and pretty east.
Pretty cool guy, never makes any jumps in logic and keeps class fun and interesting with humor and the use of clickers (Which he provides)
Expects you to teach yourself from the book, which by the way isn't clear. Spent most of time googling solutions to projects.
Expects you to self teach from the book a lot. Exams were hand written code and very difficult. Offered after class help sessions for projects that were very very helpful!
He was visiting Canterbury Uni for a semester. He taught us nothing, relied on the textbook and Youtube tutorials, and simply provided TopHat quizzes in class to check if we had read the book. The questions were specific to the book, rather than the topic area. He calls this 'peer instruction' but doesn't augment it with actual lectures.
So let me start out by saying Grissom is no pushover. His class is hard. His tests are harder. His projects are not always clear. Now for the good. He will bend over backward to help during office hours. He will use his own free time to come in and help with projects. No other teacher Ive had at GV puts the effort in that Grissom does for his class
I couldn't have asked for a better professor to introduce me to coding. He made java simple and he sparked my passion for coding. For Halloween he dressed up and did magic tricks. Tests were tough since they were handwritten code and the labs were just online exercises. Take if you want to learn.
The projects will take a lot of time and troubleshooting. An easy way to lose points is to not adhere to GVSU's java style, so make sure your comments and indentation is correct before submitting. The online textbook participation counts for like 5%, I stupidly stopped about half-way through and would've had a A- if I didn't
This is a fairly difficult class. It seems like there are two things always going on, projects and textbook, and they don't always support each other. Prof Grissom is very demanding in his requirements, but grades fairly and is extremely helpful, coming in on his off time to help with projects, even on Sundays. He tries to make the class fun.
Professor Grissom was an extremely available professor who truly cares about how his students do.
He is an absolute awesome professor. I learned so much in this class. He cares so much about your grade and is so willing to help in anyway he can. He is very humorous about the subjects that he teaches.
Scott's an overall great professor! He is really funny and likes to make you laugh. All the assignments are on Top Hat or Code org. Don't worry about this being hard. He lets you be very creative and wants you to succeed. There is one paper and it is super easy. I think there are two group projects and many partner assignments but overall it's fun.
Attendance is mandatory. Tests are quite challenging. This class in particular was extremely boring and a waste of time. They should have kept it a one credit course.
The hardest part about this class was convincing myself to show up. Honestly just a complete waste of everyone's time and money, especially now that its 3 credits. With that being said, Scott did his best at polishing this turd of a class.
I would have to disagree with the other postings regarding CIS 290. Yes it sucks the class is worth 3 credits now, but that is out of his control and he did a good job making class funny and entertaining for the content required. Although there were definitely a lot of assignments, he was a fair grader and accessible outside of class.
He does a pretty decent job with CIS290 despite how pointless the class is. 290 was really a mix of computing history readings and learning common sense in the work place. If you have an internship already or something in the CIS field this class will seem extremely useless. Also, he is pretty poor with emails, sometimes taking days to respond.
The class itself isn't always very interesting, the main topics being computer ethics and history, along with learning about internships. Professor Grissom himself is very enthusiastic, and could've easily made the class miserable. His class discussions are usually entertaining, however he does call on random students occasionally.
Grissom is a great prof. He can be intimidating sometimes but I would definitely take a class with him again. He's enthusiastic about topics and this makes the class way more enjoyable. I actually think the class content was interesting but that's imo. Some class discussion topics aren't in the notes but they're on the quizzes so go to class lol
The professor is enthusiastic when teaching. The class was interactive as there were polls in between the lectures. I liked how I could build and practice my professional identity by writing resumes and interacting with employers. The exams weren't too bad, but I overstudied for them. There was a lot of reading with quizzes at the end of the week.
I think the class is pretty useful, but I do believe that the exams are pretty pointless, Professor Grissom is not a tough grader, so if u don't bs the homework too much and spend like a couple of hours studying for each exam, you will end up with an A, also attendance is mandatory
I'll get the annoying stuff out of the way first, he tended to nickel and dime you over points on small assignments that didn't really matter, which make getting a perfect grade difficult. Attendance is also graded. On the flip side, he was very entertaining, and managed to make almost everyone participate in his class through 'anonymous' surveys.
The class is not difficult but pointless. He seems quite arrogant and pretentious, and I did not enjoy his teaching or him as a person very much. It's not the end of the world to have him but I would take someone over him every time. Does not know how to connect with students and does not understand how to teach effectively.
Nice enough guy, class was not particularly difficult but also not particularly helpful. Basically just a lot of discussion of hypothetical situations mixed in with rote memorization of computing history. Several important out-of-class events make up big portion of the grade.
Prof. Grissom is a nice guy, he truly cares about the class and is very passionate when teaching it. A lot of the stuff in this class is pointless and a complete waste of time but he does a good job at polishing it. Tests can be very difficult if you don't study since you are tested on useless facts and cases that are somewhat irrelevant.
Grissom is genuinely a nice guy. It seems like he actually cares about what is going on with his students outside of class, especially in terms of whether or not they are getting internships. However, you will not get an A in this class for half-hearted assignments. You can pass this class without doing any reading but don't expect an A.
the first half of the class is very good at preparing you in finding and completing an internship. homework is all meaningful, building resumes, interviews skills, evaluator pitch etc. the other half of the class is not as interesting history of computing is ok but ethics, court cases, professional responsibly can be boring.
This professor made extra time for our projects and even offered office hours on Sundays when he could tell our class was stressed. He truly cares if you learn in his class and will take the time to give you extra help; When he is grading you it's extremely clear about what is being graded, all in all such a great professor definitely take him.
Besides the fact its a horrible class and should be removed altogether, prof g has a terrible ego and grandiose ideas of why the class was important. Barely did any studying, passed with A-, had pop quizzes to force attendance, and made students memorize stuff about his personal life that he would put on the tests. zero worth to this class.
Good professor. I have him online, he's a very easy grader, if you do the readings and activities before class lectures he covers what you should have read in Zybook to solidify what was covered in the book. He finds creative ways for people to participate since it's online it's harder to stay focused but I enjoyed this class.
he teaches python. group work every class, acadly quizzes also, group work heavy, he does all of these things to encourage attendance and to make sure you paid attention in his lectures. 3 projects which is a big part of your grade, he gave extensions for them and offered help on sundays so he was very accommodating. pretty easy grader
He was a nice guy, it's his exams that messed me up. Exams were very hard, trick questions and lots of questions were obscure Python stuff from Zybook that was only briefly mentioned. You need to get at least a 60% on all 3 exams to pass the class, you could get 100% on everything else but still fail the class if you are bad at exams be careful
Good professor. Not a fan of his cold-calling style, but he knew his stuff and was a fair grader. Be ready to read, as you're going to be assigned weekly ZyBook activities/readings. 3 written exams, 1 lab exam, and 3 projects - be ready to really sit down and apply what you learn in readings/lectures. Excellent course for beginner programmers.
First off I want to say that Professor Grissom knows his way around coding and will give you very helpful hints for code. He uses acadly(app for quizzes and attendance), will cold-call on a lot of people every lecture. He grades really well and fare. I recommend that you take him for this course. He is definitely a funny and interesting guy.
Very experienced and an extremely kind professor who makes sure each individual understands the content
I actually liked his style of teaching and calling random people, forces you to pay attention if you need something like that. He uses acadly for quizes and to take attendance. 3 paper exams and 3 projects. CIS162 is Python, so if you know another coding language like JavaScript or something, you're gonna have to learn Python...
