great teacher for a subject like statistics. Makes it as clear as possible. You must study outside of class to do well.
very good professor for calculus. recommended!!!!

Very nice, easy going teacher. Extremely helpful, explains thoroughly. He doesn't trick you, or try to confuse.

Loved his class. Would take him for Math110, but..... going to math 130 so too bad. Great guy though.
Very nice person with a lot of patient, tests are not that hard, strongly recommended!!
Fantastic teacher. Very thorough and clear. Very helpful too. As long as you pay attention and do your homework, easy A for this class.
Took his class, had to drop, was extremely hard, seems as though he expects you to know your stuff before you attend the class, when he tries to explain stuff he confuses you more than helping, some stats class started with 40 kids, ended up with 19 or 20, if you're smart take his class if not dont!
Very easy.
the exams are easy, but there's a lot of homework. the lectures go by pretty quickly, so make sure you don't fall behind. he's also a moderately amusing guy.
he tries to help w/o your notice. easy teacher. go thru exams for u. u learn a lot n' also won't find it too hard
awesome teacher... he will go through every step of the problem so u can understand it.. his tests are well studied for since he gives u a duplicate-like study guide... awesome teacher.. very nice...
Mr. Guth is one of the best math teachers I have ever met. He goes step by step and gives plenty of examples for you to understand each chapter. Thanks to him, I love math, again. If you do the homework and study some, you should pass the class with no problems. He's a Great math teacher!!!
Very easy class if you attend. He covers everything thoroughly, not too much HW, goes over test material beforehand, makes everything understandable.
If you do the HW assigned, you will be fine.
worst math teacher ive taken. unclear, thinks from top of his head, comes in and seems to wing lectures. my notes were unorganized, and even 4.0 students dropped the class. did too much with maple, which doesn't help. DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER!
very great teacher, i was pretty good at math to begin with, so i fell a sleep here and there but for what i didn't understand he took care of me. a little geeky but a very warm person
He is a cross between Napoleon Dynamite (watch him lean and run across the class and you will see it) and Bob Sagget. He teaches as if you already knew everything, so when you are done laughing at him I would suggest you drop his class.
He doesn't know Linear Algebra. He skips important stuff and covers irrelevant topics instead. If this guy still teaches 285, transfer after 280
Guth is alright. If he was teaching 285, I would take him. If you are okay with studying on your own, this class should be a piece of cake. Lectures are not the best, but they're okay. If you don't understand something, just go to his office hours or ask him at the beginning of class.
Professor Guth is doing a good job. I like his explanations and he is really helpful and cares about his students
Math 280 is not easy, but if you have to take it, Professor Guth is a good choice. The class basically did okay, and was as interesting as could be expected.
very great teacher, i was pretty good at math to begin with, so i fell a sleep here and there but for what i didn't understand he took care of me. a little geeky but a very warm person
the leture is really important, he doesn't explain everything including things that's not going to be on the test :) funny and no quiz. great teacher overall.
Be aware! He often makes mistakes on lecture and test answers. Class is not easy with his mistakes and uncleared lectures. He skipps to many steps on math equations. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF 181 IS VERY IMPORTANT TO YOU.
whaat....null hypothesis...here come the nightmares again..ha ha..HE was a great teacher. I almost passed. but i'm reregistered to take it again...same teacher..I enjoyed the class. PS...you are not supposed to make personal comments...just rate the teacher..not what they look like...twits..have a nice day!
he's a very good teacher and whenevr you need help, he is always willing to help you out during the office hours. I recommend him because he is very thorough and answers any questions you may have.
Thanks professor Guth for teaching a great class. It was fun and I learned a lot.
Easy A. Just do all the practice tests and understand them. You will be fine.
I HATE Math but this guy made it bearable. Great Teacher!
Mr Guth is the best Math teacher I ever had!! He gives practice test before every test and the practice test is exactly the same format as on the test. As long as you pay attention and take good notes, an easy A you will get. I got an A 100% for the class.
To prepare for my Masters in Financial Engineering, I took Calc III class from prof. Guth. The class was very interesting and challeging. As a result of taking the course, I was more than adequately prepared for my FE coursework at CGU. This class was one of the better and more useful classes I have taken during my student years.
HE'S EASY GOING, WHICH IS GREAT. YOU DON'T FEEL ALL STRESSED ABOUT THE CLASS BECAUSE HE ISN'T STRICT OR HARSH. BASICALLY, STUDY AND DO ALL YOUR HOMEWORK.
He is a great teacher. If you pay attention during lecture and do the hw you will pass the class easy. Best math teacher i've had in a while
Very relaxed in lecture and open to student input. Homework is not a large part of your grade (15%) but it will definitely prepare you for the exams and the final. Make sure to complete his online practice exams which will also prepare you. Students who had trouble waited until the last minute to complete h.w. and study, he'll help you if you ask!
Sure, he gives practice tests and HW that prepare you for the exams, and he is easy going, but he talks in such complex language. He does not generate much interest in the subject, and he can be kind of smart-you-know-what. He takes 4ever to respond to e-mails and is never in his office! Try to take somebody else for honors, but he is not horrible!
this guy is great, he is very helpfull, and happy. he knows a lot about math, and is willing to go out of his way to help the students. GREAT!
excellent teacher, very helpfull and patience
oh man, worst maths professor i have ever had, taking too much time on answering homework questions, barely finish lecture (he taught 3 sections at the last day and take 10 min for final review).
I love him! he is just great. He really willingly helps students. He loves students. Whenvever you ask him, before the class or after the class or in the breaktime, he always willingly helps you. I felt that sometimes the lecture was very fast, but I think it is because there were so many things to cover in this semster. I just love him.
He was just fantastic! He really wants his students to do well so he will sit with you until you understand the concepts. He gives practice tests that are just like the exams. Whats best about his class is his sense of humor and we learn little historical facts about Statistics (they aren't on the test though).
best teacher ever, he helped me a lot. the class itself is hard but professor guth is always welling to help.
he is a really nice teacher, and he loves to curve exams. But, he gave u a lot of homework. Over all I really like his class and his teaching. I wish I had more class with him
GREAT TEACHER. ENOUGH SAID
Scott is the best! I hate math, and he was my favorite teacher from Mt. Sac. He wants everyone to do really well, and he's really approachable. Lot's of homework, but he's so nice.
Boring subject, great professor. Guth does what he can with the material. Class would be best if offered more than once a week. Any questions, he will answer them in spades. Would definitely take Guth again.
Good-hearted person. REALLY REALLY BAD AT TEACHING!!! Boring... 90% of the time he's lost and confuses you A LOT!!!
Prof. Guth is really nice. He is very helpful, and his lectures are good. I would recommend him to other students.
he is really nice and helpful. i would recommend him to other ppl.
Very helpful and fair. Explains material better then the book. Very nice and can be funny.
Just like everyone knows, he is a great professor. The class is easy, and tests are not bad. Very nice teacher!!!
HA! Now he can't complain abt hotness pts lol. Great teacher, he's very helpful.
He's cool to talk to. He's open to homework questions. Do the homework, work hard on the study guide, and you will do fine.
he has everything u want for a prof!! highly recommended!! clear, easy, willing to help and nice hand-writing... do the hw he assigns!! they are extremely helpful cuz the tests are 90% the same!! i will definitely take him for the rest of my all math classes if i can!!!
UNBELIEVABLE!! looks good in his tight shorts, great sense of humor and hopefully grades well:)Cuz i could use an A...but really he is a great prof and wants his students to do well. He is UNBELIEVABLY HELPFUL!
nice guy. pretty funny and easy going. although it didn't help that he was lost sometimes during the lecture.
Funny teacher and you gotta give the guy props for going up to Whistler BC and riding @ their world famous mountain bike park. He explains things well and has no problem helping with homework Q's. Sorta looks like a cross from Adam(Mythbusters) and Howdy Doody.
Math isn't such a great subject, but if you're gonna go through hell might as well have an awesome teacher. TAKE GUTH! =) Who wears short shorts!
I had to drop his class, he teaches using complex language. Theres easier ways to explain things but he tries to explain in it in the hardest way possible.
i had him for 181 and 280 and i would have took 285 (if he's teaching it) if i didn't have to transfer. an awesome teacher, people would come in and sit on the floor only to hope that someone would drop the class so they can be added.
Guth is a great professor! I took this class twice before and he cleared everything up. I passed his class with an A and I am absolutely horrible in math. his book costs less than $40 and he is willing to help when you need it. Use the book show up to class pay attention and do your homework. you will do great.AWESOME PROFESSOR
He uses complex words to explain the materials.I do not get it.Unrecommended!!!
Uses complex words like "average" and "standard deviation". Oops, sorry, it's a statistics class. Professor Guth was friendly and helpful.
The class is hard if you miss a class it is easy to fall behind. Guth only provides one example per section leaving the rest up to you. No extra credit! A lot of HW! Grades pretty hard.
Attending class is pointless. You end up having to teach yourself from the book.
I love Mr. Professor Guth. He teach extremely nice to me!
Scott is so nice. I appreciated his kindness and helpfulness. Math 71X was a great class also, and the textbook was a great price.
Terrible
I liked taking this class with Professor Guth. He is very clear and friendly. Do your homework and the practice tests and you'll do just fine.
Guth rocks! I love that guy!
Professor scott is great! he is extremely helpful and very understanding. He always tries to help you out when it comes to turning things in late or make up homeowrk.Hes also funny!he wrote the book and made it cheap too! Take him you wont regret it.
Hard class, but he's funny and approachable.
Highly recommend this man. He has a very friendly disposition and a great sense of humor. Tests are mostly study guide material (ie he doesn't pull questions out of his rear end).
This class is hard, you have to attend every class. Do ALL homework, study all pre tests for exams, every point matters in class towards your grade. Take lots of notes. First 2 tests are easy, but do as best as you can on both of tests, that will give you a little comfort for the 3rd test and the hardest final EVER.! Good Luck..!! STUDY, STUDY...!!!
WHat can I say, he can draw 3D drawings so well! I learned multiple integration the easy way because of his impeccable 3D drawings! Wait till' you see his spherical coordinates drawings! Plus, he's a straightforward, no nonsense professor. His exams are very fair and straightforward. Plus, he will gladly answer your questions in office hours.
Hes a good teacher. I haven't taken math in years and he was definitely helpful and test weren't too bad. A lot of homework from the book, can be tedious but if you actually do the hw especially the last few sections of a chapter you should get A's on the tests. Rock on Scott
Guth is a great professor and a really nice person. Very enjoyable class. Tests were fair and based on homework.
kind of fun and kind of easy, willing to help and grade fairly.Test are definitely not easy if you dnt study. Stick to the practice test and you will survive;Attendance is not required;Final exam are harder than other tests. He is an Apple fan.Overall this is not a hard class, I would recommend this if you are trying to get 6 honor courses.
He is a nice guy! His lessons are somewhat boring but he does try to make them fun. His class is not easy, but is not hard either. Just make sure you REALLY REALLY study the review tests he gives before every test.
Excellent Professor. He has a great sense of humor which helps you get through his evening lectures. He usually reviews homework problems prior to his new lectures so do your homework and ask questions!ALOT of homework, no quizzes, practice exams are VERY helpful, and his tests are straight forward.
I LOVE SCOTT!! Awesome teacher explains things so clear is very patient and truly cares about his students. The work is reasonable and he gives u alot of time to turn in. I highly recommend to anyone who is struggling he is a god scend! Ur the best Scott thank you so much!!
I enrolled in this course after having trouble in math 51, not only is this course extremely easy compared to math 51 but it covers math 51 and 71! once you pass 51, you're eligible for math 115 which is college level math and transferrable to all CSU's if you're a non-science or non-business major. Took him for FALL 2011 and I LOVED the class!
SCOTT IS AWESOME!! Amazing teacher. I am understanding math things i never have before. The work is reasonable and he expects it turned in by the next class, but if you dont he gives you more time. I highly recommend to anyone who is struggling with math!!
Amazing professor who really takes his time to help you out. His office hours ALWAYS had somebody in there bugging him. Definitely not an easy class, per se, but he does a great job explaining the material and keeping morale high ;). Three exams and a final, no quizzes, homework takes a long time but is necessary, just shy of 2% extra cred in all.
Scott Guth is an angel! I HATE math but I think because I never understood it. Thanks to to the help of Mr. Guth I understand and appreciate it. This man cares about his students and will make sure you know it too. If you struggle with math this is the place for you.
Scott is truly one of the best professors I have had. He helped me to completely understand math, when I was struggling before. If you have the opportunity to take the Statway program, do so. Highly Recommended!!
He's a very nice man that just wants to see his students succeed. I really appreciated his intelligence and modesty. He doesn't try to trick you with overly difficult problems on the exams and understands when you have an "off" day. Overall, I would recommend Scott.
Scott is a great professor. He is very helpful and willing to work with students who need additional help. Do not skip classes - you need to attend to truly do well in the class!
Best math professor I ever took and this is coming from a student who hates math. Really understanding and lenient. If I had the chance to take him again, I would.
Scott is awesome. My favorite professor. Very helpful, very nice, and very understanding.
Tests are very hard!!! I did every homework assignment and EVERY extra credit available despite all my effort, the professor still gave me a D when i was stuck between a D and C. DOES NOT CURVE TESTS.
He by far the best math teacher I have ever had in my lifeeeeee ! He's super chill and funny. The test was fairly challenging but as long as you do the homework, you should pass the tests ! HE's AWESOMEEEEEE
Great Professor very clear and precise on his notes and teaching. I never liked math but Guth changed all that around I actually felt I was learning math after every class. No tricks on exams very straight forward do HW and study you will be fine.
Professor Guth is very lay back gives lots of homework that sometimes is not covered in class. i would highly recommend for anyone who struggles with math. just show up take notes and do the homework, you will pass. my grade for his class "A"
He is very monotone. He gives way too much homework and it is very time consuming. He favors certain students. He has a sarcastic but very rude personality at times, but then can be very nice. Not the easiest class, but if you try your best you should pass.
Doesn't give enough examples that we can apply to the tests. I honestly didn't know what was going on until he passed out the study guide. He has audio notes and the answer keys to tests that are more helpful than his lecture. Tbh it isn't hard to pass and I deserved the grade I got because I missed several classes & did not do the work. Take him.
Prof. Scott is a really easy professor compared to any other 180 professor. Assigned a lot of textbook homework, but they're really helpful. Make sure to do them because most of the test questions come from there. Aside from that, the textbook questions are really helpful in general. NO quiz nor pop quiz. Very laid back and chill. Recommended!
Pros: Super helpful if you ask for help Clear explanations Pretty good at gauging abilities of the class overall Curves tests Gentle, funny personality Kinda hot in a Revenge of the Nerds-meets-Mr Rogers kinda way. Its a good thing. Con: Really really low energy in lectures. Be well caffeinated before class or you might not make it!
Awesome professor. Subject is boring. Agree he is low energy but still clear and hottt legs (he always wears shorts)
Took one of his early morning friday classes that was 3 hours long. If you're terrible at math like me and NOT a morning person, don't take him. I worked really hard in his class and even visited his office hours as much as I could and he still gave me a D even when I put in all my effort just to pass. He's nice but still won't pass you.
To get receive an A in his class, do the homework and utilize the study guides he makes available to you for test preparation. This will help you retain the subject well enough to help others in the future. Also, it will save you a lot of time (from studying) to pay attention in class because his lectures are very clearstraightforward.
I was afraid and thought I was terrible with math. this is your guy. he is clear, the homework is do-able and he uses awesome tech for his lectures. really enjoyed his class. he is terrific. it just sucks there is rude students or obnoxious but he sets them straight. #teamguth
Scott is an awesome teacher! The best math teacher I've ever had. If it weren't for him I would have never finished the math classes I needed on my own, so I basically owe him my degree. I'd highly recommend him if you struggle with math. There's a lot of homework, but he explains things so well that it's not really a big deal.
very intelligent and good teacher! Apple Fans!
Professor Guth was Amazing!!!!! Would highly recommend his class if you want to pass stats. Does give homework and expect you to do it. But gives a bunch of extra credit so do it!! His lectures are really long but always something new to learn. Test are not that easy but does curve on some occasions. He is always willing to help during office hours
To be frank, Guth is an extremely bland teacher; his lectures are long and detached. When asked for help, he typically uses math jargon to explain math jargon. His syllabus, however, is great and outlines every activity, homework and tests. His tests are very easy, minus the final, but that's curved. Homework is ridiculous and irrelevant.
He is as pretty tough professor if you slack off and skip days. Trust me do not skips days. You will fall behind A LOT. Trust me. The class is actually pretty fun once everyone gets comfortable with everyone else. This class can be very entertaining.
Pros: -clear assignment sheet -study guide -easy tests (minus final) Cons: -uninspired lectures -pretentious (we know you're smart but can you please explain in english) -gets annoyed with questions -easy lessons are made incredibly complicated -homework does not match up with what is taught in class -homework is long and ridiculous
Had for stats/alg. He's monotoned but as long as you show up to class, pay attention and do the homework on time as assigned it is a very easy class. I am "math challenged" and found this class easy. You go into groups most days, and can talk amongst your peers then, which is very helpful. If you ask clear questions he's very helpful.
Professor Guthrie cares very much that you understand the material. He ensues a family atmosphere. He is very patient and extends his time in and out of the classroom to answer one's enquires. Sorry, but you would be crazy to take someone else for Math110. Guth's class was fun. His humor is beyond description; he makes math feel like a breeze.
Professor Guth is really a gem. He does everything in groups, so it feels really comfortable and the class isn't boring. Be aware of a lot of homework, although he tries his best to go over everyone's questions. If you fall behind, you can catch up, but it will be a lot. If you miss a day, you will have a lot to catch up on. He is a very sweet man!
TAKE HIM TAKE HIM TAKE HIM!!!! Seriously, I am so bad at math but Professor Guth made it do-able. I took him for 70S and 110S and I got an A. Never thought I could get an A in Stats but I did!!! Tests are exactly like the study guide. Only three tests total. Homework is online, but he gives you plenty of time to complete it. AWESOME PROFESSOR!
Dude, this professor was cool! Had him for a 1 class-per-week. Lectures may be dry at times, but super duper understandable. A LOT of homework- yes, you need the book. Do not underestimate. Homework does help you understand the lessons more. He will ask for any help on the hw problems. Let him know! Tests were okay- gotta know your stuff!
He is awesome! passes out lots of packets every day and make sure you keep them, because they will help you on tests! He is really fun, but also has a lot of material to cover, so when he cracks down he really cracks down. He cares for his students and wants everyone to pass, as long as you care, and actually put in time to study and do hw
Guth is goofy and a decent guy, but he is VERY disorganized. Constantly forgetting things, takes a while to respond to emails, barely available during office hours, and does not really care. Laid back, LOTS of homework, pretty dry lectures, and the tests are manageable if you study. I do not recommend him for honors stats.
Scott is one of the most caring professors Ive ever had. He is respected by a lot of students and is a funny guy. He gives out homework packets daily, so dont be absent. He curves final grades, so if your someone who struggles with statistics, he will find ways to help you pass. Everyone got along. I would highly recommend taking him.
Professor Guth is a really nice professor that really wants you to succeed. He does not mind spending time helping you if you don't understand concepts. Definitely spend your time doing the homework and extra credit. Do the study guides for the tests will help you prepare a lot. Make sure you pay attention in class and listen to what he says.
Professor Scott is the best math teacher I ever had, his class is not easy there are two packages that he requires to do do in class and the rest of it it's homework plus the homework online. If you turn in the homework everyday and study the review exams you'll do fine and don't miss class. He really cares for his students.
Guth is a good guy, but teaching isn't his strong suit. He's very disorganized and his own math book has several issues, an example being some of the math problems have the wrong answer in the back of the book. He is also the only stats professor that makes you use a standard calculator, making problems harder and learning from others difficult.
Does all things in his power to help you pass!
Guth is the best. I would highly recommend him if you have trouble with math, because he teaches very clearly. Get your work done, and you'll be fine. I was working a lot while I was taking his class and still got a B. Fun class!
Professor Guth is great! Took him for 70 & 110S. Do the homework, really use the study guide, its basically the test and youll be good! Im horrible at math, HORRIBLE! But he taught math in a way I was able to understand. Thank you!
This guy is only there to collect a paycheck let me make that very clear. He does not care about his students. You are allowed to ask him questions during an exam, but his response is "I'm not going to help you with that." He is very forgetful and really no help at all. It is sad that he is the only professor available to teach this honors course.
lots of homework, does not teach just sits there.
avoid.
Please dont take this Professor for honors stats!! Very confusing lectures and even more confusing tests and homework. I wish I could drop this class but its too late, dont risk it, he cannot teach at all!! I have had to teach myself the material and thats not how it should be.. everybody is confused in that class
Scott is a nice/funny professor but sometimes his lectures will put you to sleep. You will get lots of homework packets and online quizzes which can make you fall behind easily if you don't keep up with them. His tests are exactly like the study guide.
Hes an excellent professor! if you hate math as much as I do, you won't hate it as much with this professor. Hes funny and overall fun class. He gives out hw every week and online hw for stats. The exams aren't as challenging if you are keeping up with the class.
I barely got through this class. Lectures are so hard to stay awake in. It sucks he is the only professor offered for honors. He prints out your notes for you and you just copy and fill in during lectures. He knows that stats is not the best subject and it shows, he is not passionate and just getting through it.
Awesome Teacher, helps you to learn, smart, funny
Extremely difficult class. Professor tends to overcomplicate things during the lecture. I was a percentage away from a C- and he still failed me.
Professor Guth was a real gem. His criteria was clearly taught and he always made sure his students understood. very helpful and cared if students needed extra help or what not. Each class consisted of a packet where he would help us do, and we would also do some of the in groups. Easy class due to his excellent teaching style. Highly recommend
You have to pay $90 for the course he makes us use. Lectures are long and hard to stay awake. Nice guy tho
Stresses the importance of concepts but spends too much time on concepts that he doesn't give us many examples to actually understand the concept. Doesn't pick homework questions carefully and just picks random questions in a pattern with some questions that aren't relevant. Test's are very easy though if you can self study. Lots of extra credit.
3 tests, 1 final. Not hard as long as you know the material No quiz His lectures are good if you know the material, and I found it confusing from time to time. Tons of homework, but helps you study and learn materials. Tons of extra credits.
Scott Guth is an incredible Professor! By no means is he perfect, but he teaches math like no other. Tests & homework are reasonable. I would highly recommend him if you are looking for a math class that isnt boring. He made me actually enjoy learning Algebra. His classes fill up fast, though, and for good reason. Take him if you can.
Three tests on criteria and a final, it does take a huge chunk of your grade but he provides a study guide for each test and as long as you go by that, you're good. No surprise or trick questions. There are physical packets and online work to do. Access to online course is under only $40, which is great! His style of teaching made me love stats.
Professor Guth is a great professor but gives too much assignment that it is hard to keep up with the course. Had trouble getting emails back from him. His assignments are clear but its overwhelming. Aiming for a C-
Gives a ton of hw. Average of about 50-70 problems a week. Highly recommend chegg or slader to help get it done and give you a good understanding. Really nice man. Never tested us on proofs which was absolutely amazing. Do the hw. It gives a good understanding of the material and prepares you well for exams
MATH280 Stupid Homework The professor literally assigned one third of the exercise in Stewart's Calculus book as homework. Each week, there are 50-70 problems to solve by hand. And the homework was due four times a semester. Each due would have nearly 200 problems to hand in. I've never seen math professor like this. Stupid.
He gives a lot of homework, so it will definitely feel like busy work at some point. Since Stats was easy, his lectures got really boring for me, so try to take stats asynchronous with someone else if you find it easy. The midterms for stats were super straightforward, but again it wouldn't be for everyone. You will like him as a person anyhow!
Requires you to purchase his own Stats book. Makes you do a TON of homework but it only counts as 15% of your grade. 3 midterms 20% of overall grade, and final is 25%. Doesn't answer emails, very inaccessible (even through the pandemic). If you struggle with algebra, don't take him. His stats class is VERY algebra-intensive. Worse class I've taken.
Amazing teacher. Really helps you understand and spends a lot of time going over homework and goes over everyones questions. Extends homework and does precise study guides to help with tests. I have always struggled when it came to math but this professor was amazing.
So the only problem I had with this class is that he makes you buy his textbook when really you dont need it at all so dont buy it. You will need to do homework but make sure not to do it last minute, he will give you 5 tries. Also make sure to study the study guides to pass examines which make most of your grades. He will give you extensions
Math is my worse subject ever & I received an A! STUDY. Go the the marc center for additional help, thats what helped me pass the class. As long as you understand the homework you should pass the mid terms. Do the practice homework, study the test reviews. He curves the midterms & and even drops a midterm, theres 3 + the final. Dont buy the book
Best Professor thus far! Professor Guth is amazing! His lectures are very clear, provides study guides that are very similar to exams, and gives extra credit if needed. He gives 3 exams plus final. Drops the lowest exam and is very flexible with Hw due dates. Dont need text book; packets are enough for tests! Take him, you wont regret it!
I took him for Elementary Statistics during the Winter and he is a great professor. He is very caring & understanding in the sense that he will extend due dates of any homework if you email him. He prints out the notes for every section and goes into detail during the lectures and how to solve the problems step by step. I definitely recommend him.
He does not "teach" you during lectures, he literally repeats what the textbook says, and do the examples on the textbook all over again. around 100 homework questions per week, 15-25 per chapter. Tests are hard too because you can barely understand his lecture. If possible, choose someone else.
Professor Scott gives study guides that really reflect his test, so study those. But I must warn you, HE ASSIGNS A LOT OF HW. I'm not joking, literally 40 - 60 math problems weekly. This class ate up so much of my time. Its a 5 unit class, but I had less hw in my other two engineering classes combined which is insane. Still a decent professor.
Please notice! Don't take his math 285. you won't learn anything. His lecture is totally useless. He is totally REPEATING the book during the lecture. You won't understand what he saying. I just attend his lecture a few times learned nothing then I dropped out. Please take other professors' math 260 +math 290! *HW: 100 questions /week
I know professor Guth is a smart guy, but he does not know how to teach. end of the story. I can understand every word he is saying, but I just cannot understand his lectures. Everything he teaches confuses students.
You have not thaught until they have learned. If you can't explain it simply then you don't know it well enough. The math department failed us by letting this guy teach calculus. He doesn't teach and expects you to know what you never learned in his class. He gives a lot of homework. Even the book he uses is outdated and confusing like him. Don't
Out of my three classes, which were physics, chem, and math, this class was by far the most difficult. He assigns a lot of homework and his lectures come from the textbook. However, the sheer amount of homework leads to easy tests, and he explains complex topics like no other professor. Highly recommend!
I don't know how this teacher gets 5 stars. I am not going to say too much. Stay away from this teacher. Too much homework, useless lectures, tough grader. Find a better teacher.
This professor makes struggling through higher level math not worth the stress. He assigns a lot of homework (which he grades according to accuracy), from a book you have to purchase, and it only amounts to 15% of the overall grade. Worst of all it does nothing for preparing you for the exams, which are littered with concepts he vaguely covers.
Professor Guth isn't horrible, unless you have taken calculus in high school and did well on it I would not recommend him. There's A TON of homework that you'll need to do, he is often generous if you don't complete it before the deadline but heck it's a lot of work. He does not do test drops so beware of it. Had to drop his class to save headaches
He barely teaches you anything you basically have to learn everything on your own. He doesn't have a good grasp over the material and he makes a LOT of mistakes during the lectures, but he still expects you to be genius on the day of the test. DONT TAKE HIM
Professor Guth enjoys and understand calculus. His lectures are organized and given with a sense of humor. His tests are easy and always related to the lectures. There is a lot of homework, but he only checks that you did them and does not care if they are incorrect.
Super caring and considerate professor. There was a lot of homework but his practice tests were very similar to the actual tests. Gave tons of extra credit and was very lenient with attendence. Would definitely take again.
What an amazing Professor! To be fair, when I took him this Fall 2022. I thought he was a bad professor cuz of the ratemyprofessor. Don't listen to the neg convo cuz it's probably people who didn't care taking that class. The test reviews are similar to the test but if the review is hard, he will make the test easier. Trust me! I ended up with A.
Worst professor I ever had, he lectures constantly bearly explaining the material, you blink in his class and you miss something. The homework takes for ever to complete.
Terrible. So much homework and he grades them by completion as if we don't have other classes going on. Would not recommend him unless you can dedicate your entire semester working on his class.
Prof Guth is an amazing lecturer. He provides you handouts to organize your notes. He does not assign a lot of HW and is always willing to push back the deadlines if you request him to do so. His tests are always straightforward, short, and open-notes. We had to rush through the last few chapters, but he did not include them on the final.
Love his energy, especially for an 8 am class where everyone is still half asleep. Assigns homework that isn't too difficult and is willing to push back deadlines if requested. Formulas are provided on tests. Only con is that I felt the lectures were heavy, but his notes help a lot while doing homework. Absolutely recommend this prof for stats!!
I loved this professor. He makes things easy to understand and provides a lot of help to students. He always pushes back homework deadlines so you have enough time. Each class period is just doing fill-in-the-blank notes which I loved. Attendance is part of your grade though, but I had a 69% in attendance and still ended with an 96% in the class.
Bro was bonkers straight up
If you wanna get railed from the backside with no vaseline from hw assignments, you should take this class. Shows one example from each section and moves on. He will just be a placeholder for this class that hands you exams. Depend on yourself to learn the material; textbook, youtube, etc.
He gave us some difficult question. One class's ave score is D, another class is C. Hope the exams can become more easier!!!
He is nice but TBH his class was boring, confusing, and unorganized. Didn't really learn anything. He also assigns irrelevant homework. About 650 problems for 16 weeks of class. Notes are posted online but are always late. If you want more anxiety and depression in your life take his class. It's broken that he has a 5/5.
Great Professor but assigns homework that is irrelevant to his class. He truely wants you to succeed. At Mt. Sac he is by far the best Math 181 teacher.
he is a nice professor. too many HW, you can't put all the time on the HW while taking other classes. and do more practice. If you ask him a question he will be nice to respond to you!
Nice person, but at least for me, his teaching style was absolutely horrible. He assigned so much homework that it was genuinely, physically impossible for me to complete all of it while juggling two other stem classes. Tests were fair, but lecture was boring and not helpful. Homework is graded on correctness, and consists of over 600 questions.
I love love this professor! He is so nice to everyone around the class! Around the end of the semester, he's going to give a progress report that's the final grade before the final exam. And he's very nice that he's gonna drop the lowest score of one of the exam! I'm happy that I took his class.
150-200 problem HW packets due before exams. Most of it is work that was not covered or will even be on the exam. His lectures are boring, and he is extremely vague with material that might appear on the exam which is annoying, when each exam is 20% of grade. If you can dedicate all your time to self teaching and pointless HW then take this course.
Scott Guth was a phenomenal Professor! I failed Stats my first time with a different Professor, but when I took it with Guth, my grade did a complete 180!!! Learning with him was so much easier. Study guides are just like exams and they're 20pts extra credit. For homework, he provides a video and you only have to spend < $25 on a calculator.
Math 280, Lots of HW, tradeoff for no quizzes. HW can be difficult and may include proofs. There is EC for HW. Grades weighted. Exams are like problems from the HW but they do contain atleast 1 proof question or potentially none. Final is basically practice final just gives you an idea of what to study. Prof is decent at teaching contents of class.
The professor assigns a ton of homework, but if you stay on top of it and use resources like unstuck study, you can get through the class. Lectures can be dry, so I recommend the textbook and YouTube for supplementary learning.
Lots of homework at times but it really helped practice what we were learning and he gives lots of extensions. He makes videos of all hws of questions straight from website. Study guides r exactly like the tests and he makes vids to explain it. He gives printed notes and goes into detail step by step with u and answers any questions along the way.
Gave lots of homework, but he gave extensions. His lectures assumed that students already understood the material, making it tough for beginners in calculus. Grades mostly came from tests, so even with a lot of homework, it didn't help much if you struggled on a test.
He provided notes for each lecture. He gave a reasonable amount of HW. Study Guides were very similar to the exams. He was also willing to extend some due dates. Overall 10/10 would take again.
Guth's Stats class is hard. However, he makes it easier to manage all the information that is being thrown at you. If you miss a class, it's hard to recover so he posts all of his recorded lectures on canvas. His study guides are very clear and you will see almost the exact same questions on the exam. Guth made stats less scary. 10/10 recommend.
I couldn't have asked for a better professor. If you have the opportunity take his class, take it. He clearly goes over the work (step by step). He does give a lot of homework, but it is exactly what you'll see on his exams. He provides youtube videos to follow for all of the homework as well. He is a great professor!
Believe me, as long as you follow the teacher's rules for this course, you will get a good score, and he will drop the lowest exam score. Worth again.
Great professor overall. Sad to see him retire, but couldn't have asked for a more fair and smart professor. Explained so many difficult topics well.
