Best teacher on campus. Makes class fun while teaching. Great personality, great teaching skills, and very helpful. Tests are challenging, but review sheets are great.
Scott is an excellent, great teacher - Lecture wise, personality wise, and he truly cares about his students' sucess. His class is not only an excellent learning experience, but I look forward to each class because he makes learning Biology FUN!
DO NOT take this teacher online. Very unhelpful, procrastinates with posting assignments, we were all a nervous wreck. Many mistakes on study guide (things on there 2 and 3 times, misspelled, etc.), basically expects you to teach yourself. We got another teacher a week into the class to take over the class - need I say more?
AWESOME!! Need I say more?
Herber has tied for my favorite teacher at BCC. His class was very easy and he was very helpful. Personality-wise, he is outstanding. He showed some great videos that reinforce the concepts and his study guides were invaluable.
Scott Herber made Microbiology fun, easy, and interesting. He's an awsome teacher. He gives great reviews to study by and normally gives a curb so he makes getting a decent grade possible with a very hard subject. Would highly recommend him. On top on everything else, he's a really cool dude!
Great instuctor, helps prepare you for testing very well.
Excellent professor, took his class for both Bio and Micro. I'm about to enter RN school and still utilitizing notes and what I learned through Mr. Herber. Highly recommend him to anyway who truly wants to expand their knowledge.
I wouldn't let my kids stand under the cooling mist at the zoo today because I don't want them to get Legionnaire's Disease. My husband has been complaining about our house smelling of bleach and I'm pretty sure the water out of the tap is unsafe to drink. In other words, I learned a lot in Scott Herber's microbiology class.
GREAT TEACHER! the labs were a joke, 20 min class of just asking him for the answers. he does a great job of expaining the material. the lectures were just movies, and the class before the tests he gives a word for word whats on the test. great guy, great teacher, no dought id take him again if i needed too.
Mr. Herb makes a very hard subject seem like a breeze. Test's are not easy, but he gives a curve allowing for a good grade. Labs are extremely easy, and no one fails the lab final. He has an awesome personality and cool attitude. Strongly recommend!
Scott is a great teacher. I've taken Biology, Micro, Anatomy and Phys with him. I hated science classes before getting him as a teacher. He makes learning interesting and gets everyone to participate in class. Very upbeat and overall awesome teacher!!!!!!
Herber definitely knows his stuff. He makes the material interesting and funny. The tests can be hard but if you attend class and pay attention, he'll make sure you're prepared for them. His class is definitely better than a kick in the balls.
The stuff you learn is complicated but if you study for the test you'll do fine. He grades on a curve so that helps. Hes real cool and you'll pass as long as you try.
Herber is the best teacher! he's very laid back. I used to hate bio because i nearly failed in HS but he makes it easy and fun. Some of the stuff is hard but he provides outlines to follow and lab days are easy. He answers all of the question you have.and he curves all the tests BOTTOMLINE: GREAT TEACHER TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!!!
I was not really satisfied w/ Mr. Herber's class. It was sort of an A for effort class. Myself & the majority of class didn't do well on tests(even after he curved every single one), but still received an A in class. I don't feel that I learned much.He didn't seem to want to be bothered w/ questions, esp in lab.I wouldn't take him again.
Take Scott Herber if at all possible! He is fair; easy to approach; provides enjoyable lecture; and is really a fun guy! Tests are ez if you study your study guide. Scott if you are reading this you make learning fun- thanks again. I will be a better nurse because of your class. Your class was my favorite this past semester!
Herber's class is easy. He goes through Powerpoints which he provides for you and he gives you study guide for tests. However I don't feel he explains what you are learning in terms easy to understand. He is a cool guy. In this class you memorize not learn.
I plan on going for a degree in biology so it was very important to me to create a strong foundation. Mr Herber was exactly what I needed. He is incredibly knowledgeable about his field and helped me fully understand how get the best lab results/data/conclusions. Thanks to Herber I feel confident about my higher level bio classes.
This guy knows his stuff and he has fun teaching. Interaction with students is highly encouraged and inevitably leads to a deeper understanding of the material presented. I wouldn't say that he is an 'easy' professor, but would definitely say that he is a great professor.
Have taken classes at University level. Compares as follows high level knowledge of subject, current and relevant materials used for learning, readily available to answer questions without being condescending, challenging and fair. If you do the work, your grade will reflect. If an award could be given for most interesting lecture he'd win
Mr. Herber.... Hmmm where to start? By far the best professor I have had so far. He makes class fun and is always available for questions and extra help. Labs are always exciting and I looked forward to attending his class every week. If you have to take Biology or Microbiology he is a must!
Prof. Herber is very knowledgeable and helpful in Lab Class. Online he posted all of the info I needed and answered all of my questions. So I would definitely recommend Prof. Herber.
I am not a science person but Mr. Herber is a great teacher. He was always friendly and willing to help. I took his Hybrid class this semester and he gave us the EXACT questions with the answers that we needed to study for his test. Granted, you have about 400 Qu's to memorize and then he uses only 100 of them but it's a help!
Good teacher that makes what could be a really hard class enjoyable. You have to work hard but he gives you everything you need to do well. Mr. Herber is approachable and the classroom rappor is always fun.
Scott Herber's class is very easy as long as you do the work. I took his HYBRID class and got an A. The class is more of an independent learning style. He literally gives you EVERYTHING you need to pass the class and is always available for questions. If you need to be spoon feed while learning this is NOT the class for you.
I took Professor Herber for Micro Biology and WOW was it great! He is a practical teacher that will do anything for his students to succeed. I learned a lot in his class and feel very comfortable with the material. My favorite part of his instructional methods was he actually had a personality and made class fun! I HIGHLY recommend you take him!!!
Great if you want to learn nothing and waste time. Not great if you actually want to learn something. Easily swayed by students to take open book tests. Very unorganized course as well.
Herber has an easy-going laid-back style and is genuinely interested in his students. He has a personality that is generally fun but could be off-putting to some. He made a hard course passable even though the material was very difficult. However, to get the most out of Micro you have to do more than just get a B, go the extra mile for an A!
Mr. Herber is a good teacher and very down to earth. The material is difficult but Herber does a good job of breaking it down and explaining it. He is very forgiving when grading and offers extra credit. Highly recommend taking him for any biology course.
best teacher ive ever had! all you have to do is pay attention. NO HOMEWORK OR PAPERS! only the occasional quiz/test (very easy to prepare for) i highly recommend him
I LOVE PROFESSOR HERBERT I LEARNED ALOT IN A FUN WAY. HE WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH..STUDY HIS NOTES / QUIZ. DON'T MISS HIS LABS OR YOU WILL BE LOST.I WISH ALL THE PROFESSORS WERE LIKE HIM.
Not a good teacher. Doesn't teach. Doesn't write his own tests, he gets them online and so the questions don't match the textbook. Grades on curves instead of helping students learn. I would not take him again.
Yes he post his test online, but it is up to you to do the work. He does that so you have time to review them. This teacher makes class interesting and for my dynamic personality it fit great. Make sure you go to the labs they are very important. This teacher is by far awesome and a great teacher. I would take him again. :)
He was very funny. Must go to lab to get a good grade but if you do, you will ace lab. Do the journal readings early, if you do them you will get an A. Offers extra credit. Gives study guide but make sure you find ALL the answers for them and study them. Also memorize answers for optional online quizzes. Where his test questions come from.
This class is fun. You have to work hard to learn the material. You can't get away easy on this one. You must study the book. Mr. Herber gives lectures in such a cool way, with lots of interesting and entertaining stories. He is very encouraging and ready to help. I recommend this class to all serious, hardworking students.
Taking him now For Micro and he is hilarious. Makes class fun and is super supportive when you have questions. The practice quizzes are on your test with additional ones he adds but he tells you what to study. Learning a great deal!
I took him for Oceanography and i think he is great. He is super funny and the class was super easy. I'm not sure about his other classes but if you take non majors Oceanography with him it's simple.
Herber was a great professor. He is passionate about his work which makes the class more interested in the topic. When you need help is there to give it to you. He offers a lot of extra credit. His tests arent difficult if you study and listen to his hints. I reccomend him to all having to take Microbiology or any other class with him!!!!
Tends to have long but usually entertaining side-tracked discussions with students. This just keeps the class from getting boring. That and his breezily casual style. He treats everyone like adults but will not pick up your slack, especially in the lab.
Mr. Herber is an excellent teacher. He wants you to understand the material and helps whenever. Looked forward going to his class.
Micro Biology Herber will give you best info in during his lecture, he will spend the lab on his cell phone tTHE ENTIRE CLASS! he does not walk around or offer help. you are allowed to work with others at your table during lab. my class was excited about this class and learning, unfortunately he is not a great teacher. very disappointed.
I took oceanography with professor Herber and it was a SUPER easy course!!!! Didn't use the textbook much but still received an A. It was a summer class and was pretty much powerpoint lectures and tests!
Very difficult class. He teaches almost like he expects everyone to know it like he does. I managed to pass because he curves all of his tests because everyone does so poorly. The final he gave everyone a 117%. Very likeable guy but terrible teacher, sorry.
Had him for microbiology and the class was fairly easy plus he is very knowledgeable. As long as you study the quiz reviews for the exams and pay attention in class, you'll have no problem passing it with an A. He also offers 100 points extra credit, equivalent to one test grade. However, he can get off-topic easily.
I took Micro & BIO1 with Herber. Highly recommend him for any subject, he is awesome and makes class super entertaining. Sure he makes you work for your grade, but if you do everything he asks you will certainly pass. I plan on taking him online for, marine biology this upcoming semester, and am kind of bummed its only offered online! :) patty
He is very intuned with what he is talking about but unless you know the terms you may not understand or follow with what he is saying. He is very cool and laid back but also takes his class seriously. Study the reviews and read the chapters and you will pass his class. He curves tests so just try to be the smartest kid in the class! :)
lecture was found to be very interesting. BUT, in lab he sits behind his desk PLAYING on his PHONE! Not even paying attention to any of the class. He NEVER came around checking on any lab experiments, or offering assistance. You are pretty much on your own in the lab. i was very disappointed with the class.
This professor is awesome! I heard a lot of negative things about him but he turned out to be one of my favorite professors. His tests are difficult but he curves and if you study the practice quizzes you will be fine. He offers a lot of extra credit too. If you pay attention and do what he says, youll have no problem passing with an A.
You have to read a chapter and take a test once a week. There are discussion boards every few weeks, but they are only for attendance purposes. Don't expect him to email you back fast though. The midterm and final were just the 8 previous quizzes before that. So, those are pretty easy, and they are both proctored. There are 2 extra credit chapters.
Biology was never my strongest subject, but Mr. Herber really helped! Make sure you do the quizzes as you go over the chapters (even though they're due by end of semester, the quiz questions are on the test). Take notes & again know the quiz questions! Gives reviews before tests, with actual questions from test. Curves tests, he's a super cool guy.
Herber is amazing. Even though Biology is a boring subject he tried to make the lectures interesting (even though they were super long). The labs were fun and he made the class easy to follow. They're were no surprises on the tests and he's just an overall cool guy. I would take him again in a heart beat!
One of the easiest teachers that I have ever had. He offers 100 points of extra credit (almost equivalent to one test). Don't really need the book, I didn't get it and got an A. He is an awesome guy, not that good at teaching. The only issue is that I learned absolutely nothing from this class that will benefit my future academic career.
Overall, Easy class but was kind of a joke. Labs were nonsense and he wasn't helpful. Cool guy though, he tries to make lectures fun. I feel like i didn't learn much and the test were extremely tough and on things we didn't cover but they were graded on a curve. I think he's a great person to hang out with but an ok professor.
Very awesome professor, one of the best. Relaxed learning makes you learn more. Clear expectations and not too much workload. Very interesting class.
He gives big curves on his test there hard but the curves will help u out big time.
Great instructor, very clear as to what he expects of you. The labs feels like your being thrown to the wolves, but he'll help if you ask; but don't expect him to hold you by the hand. He gives a full letter grade worth of extra credit, but if you stay on top of your work and study for the tests you won't need it. Tests are difficult, be prepared.
Hes the best teacher ever. Not just at EFSC ever. We had one student in my class who drove from Vero. His tests are hard but he gives you a huge curve. If your taking biology especially if your at the Melbourne Campus take his class.
Yay for curves, man this guy crazy curves. Easy class as long as you put in the effort to study for the exams. Lab is fantastic, straightforward and kinda fun in a gross way. I would take a class he teaches again.
I am currently taking his online Epidemiology class. Mr. Herber assigns discussion boards and homework right from the beginning. Early on I was thinking of dropping, but I'm glad I stayed. He expects you to write scientifically, which prepares you for graduate courses. If you take him for Epi be ready to work for your grade. Great class overall.
Taking Mr. Herber for the bachelors class. The Emerging Disease class is very interesting. This class is structured differently as he applies real world aspects to lectures. As a professor he seems very knowledgeable, and he his experienced in his field. Mr. Herber also has a good sense of humor. Only complaint is waiting for posted grades.
1 quiz each week (2 chances) and a proctored midterm and final-both of which are just the questions from the quizzes, so very easy to prepare for. Overall, great easy class!
Very straight forward, self-driven class. Stay up with the quizzes and study for the midterm and final and you will do great.
I have Micro & BIO 1 before with professor Herbert. Highly recommend him for any subject, he is awesome and makes class easy and entertaining. my first language is spanish but this professor have the method easy to teach. thanks Mr Scott H.
Self-directed course. He seems to be a very busy man and doesn't provide very much feedback (I took his class online). Study for the midterm and final (one proctored), complete quizzes and a handful of discussions and you will do fine.
Mr. herber knows his stuff and is a good enthusiastic teacher. has the best stories and is not afraid to be real. gives extra credit opportunities, and gives an outline of a study guide for the test, HOWEVER all of the tests are EXTREAMLY hard, but he grades on massive curve so you can still make a decent grade. Lab is super gross, but fun!
Great teacher, he wants you to be prepared for an occupation in biology. He expects you to know the material like the back of your hand. Read the book and record the quizzes as you take them because they will be helpful for the exams. Hint Hint. But just have fun in learning and have a passion for this field and you will be fine.
Professor Herber knows his stuff. I took his hybrid class. All the notes and chapter quizzes were online as well as the lab quizzes. They are super easy, you get two chances to answer them correctly, which helps you get an A on every one. The one day a week that we were in the class, we did labs. He mostly was just there to supervise.
Professor Herber makes it easy to pass. He makes the classes fun, as well as labs you do. His lectures may seem long, but he makes them entertaining and memorable. I used to hate taking any science class. Until I took this professor. He will help you pass this class, tells you what to study for the tests, and I would definitely recommend. 10/10 :)
Professor Herber is an excellent instructor. I took his online Oceanography course over 12 weeks and it was easy. Every week students were required to read a chapter, post in the discussion board (no replies to other students were necessary) and take a quiz. I was able to manage the workload just fine while taking 3 other classes and volunteering.
Took him online for oceanography. Very easy A. The class is more of a work at your own pace type, no DB's, just quizzes (that you can take twice) and the proctored exams are EXACTLY the quizzes you do. Just study them and you'll do fine.
I took Professor Herber for an online class that required a lot of material. Even though it was time consuming, he was really considerate and understanding. I struggled turning things on in time but he doesn't penalize us for that. Easy class, but a LOTTTT of work.
Agree with the positive feedback above. Great person and teacher, wants his students to succeed. He likes to say he won't, "Spoon feed students the information." So I can see where some say he sits back in lab. He wants you to have a chance to figure things out on your own, but is more than happy to help you figure things out. Highly recommended!!!
A really likable guy... he is straightforward and intelligent. No complaints. Take him.
Great professor. Makes you work hard for a grade. But it's worth it. You learn the skills you need through the labs for your unknown bacteria. So PAY ATTENTION. Tests are hard! Study quizzes at end of the chapters in the textbook. He does offer extra credit which can bump you up a letter grade
Mr. Herber is awesome! During the semester, there was a power outage the day of my final and he offered to let me come to his office and take it. He really wants you to succeed. My only caution is that you don't become lax with the discussions. He really wants to pick your brain and that's what will boost your grade the most even more than quizzes.
Herber is awesome for microbio! If you like laboratories and hands-on stuff then you'll love this class. Lectures are really interesting and engaging. Downside, you pretty much have to attend all the labs because the techniques you learn are critical to the final lab practical which is 30% of your grade. I never skipped because I loved this class.
Awesome teacher!!! Highly recommend
Funny guy, lots of off topic (awkward topic choices) in lecture. Easy A, hard exams given but they are majorly curved. Don't expect to actually learn anything you may need for your degree or other classes. Likes to sit back and play on the phone throughout lab so don't expect much help there. No hand holding, or teaching really for that matter.
His quizzes (1-2/week) drove me INSANE. They are full of inexplicable errors that he won't even fix. The same exact questions are on the tests, but the errors might be different or there might be new ones. 1-2 message boards/week. 3 tests. He WON'T respond to emails or fix his errors, but he might consider giving some credit back. Still got an A.
Second time having Prof. Herber, excellent in lecture and uses examples of real world issues to instruct. Some say "off topic" at times, but it's all related. Nice, funny, understanding. LAB: he does not hold your hand, one must do the work and understand exactly what is going on or you will struggle when it comes to the bacterial unknown.
Professor Herber is extremely real. He is not going to sugar coat ANYTHING for you. He does not take attendance but let me be clear in saying if you do not show up to lab you will not pass this class. Unknown is worth 30% of your grade. If you pay attention in lab, make notes in lab, and follow instructions precisely the unknown will not be hard.
Lots of reading needed outside of the textbook; doesn't always get back with you when sent an email request; GREAT chance to retake quizzes online (you get two chances); midterm and final questions are usually directly taken from the quizzes taken online which is most helpful. Lots and lots of videos to watch but they are very helpful.
Professor Herber is extremely knowledgable and enjoys passing on his vast knowledge and experience to his students. His teaching style is practical and down to earth and lab is very hands on and a lot of fun. His tests are difficult but he gives ample opportunity for extra credit. I loved this class and would take Professor Herber again!
If you need Microbiology take it with this teacher!!!! All of the tests are at home and gives a week to do them. Doesn't take attendance but I highly recommend going to class not only because it's interesting but you WILL NOT pass your unknown bacteria lab final if you don't show up and learn the labs. Can't say enough positive things about him.
You read a chapter, take a quiz then discussion board of 300-500 words. Midterm and Final are proctored, no notes. The questions are from the quizzes, study the quizzes and you'll be good. Lots of videos to watch too which was interesting and made it easier to understand some of the chapters.
This professor in person is more cool than anything else but his online class is a struggle, assignments are oddly laid out and the work is stupid at times. His grading on APA is excruciatingly huge taking around 10 points off for slightly small mistakes that not even the writing center noticed.
Professor Herber is amazing. He is human and understands that life happens. That being said, expect to work and participate to pass the course. He is not a hand holder, but wants his students to succeed. I would definitely take him again and would highly recommend him to anyone taking one of his courses.
I had had a lot of answers that had typos, it took him a while but at the last minute he gave me all the points for them. It really changed my grade. He doesn't answer you very fast but just be patient and eventually he'll respond. The proctor exams are exactly what is on the quizzes, it makes it really easy.
I was excited for Oceanography. I didn't get to learn this in high school which made online was a little harder. I still gathered a lot of information and loved the discussion boards. Even though I didn't respond to what everyone else wrote, it was nice to see what they pulled out of the chapters. I emailed him a couple times and he responded.
Make sure you read ALL the chapters of each section you are going to take a exam on. If you do this, you will pass the exam portion with a breeze. Pay attention in lab LOL Overall hilarious stories to go with the topic of each lecture and he is always available outside and after class!
I took him in a face to face, but you should take him as a hybrid. Just show up to lab and all the lectures will be online. The good thing about a hybrid is that the reviews he gives will be almost word for word with the tests you do.
I thought he was a wonderful professor. I would take him again. He is very understanding and answers questions thoroughly. He expects you to learn in this class (DUH!) and he uses the textbook for the tests. He is very accommodating (can take tests early if need to miss class) he also offers extra credit. Easy class to pass-IF YOU PUT THE WORK IN!
Professor Herber is a wonderful, real person. He is very accessible outside of class and has a good outlook on life and education. He is very smart and expects you to TRY in labs. His testing methods are a bit odd but if you actively ask questions, show effort, try everything in labs he is more than willing to help you with anything.
This has been my favorite online class I have ever taken and I don't even care about Anatomy and Physiology. It is the same thing every week- 1 to 2 500 word discussion posts based on chapter and then 1 to 2 quizzes. All of the Exams are taken word for word from the quizzes. As long as you do the work, you will get an A. AND he lets you work ahead.
Since I took this class online, I online got to speak with prof. herber via canvas, and the few times I did he seemed kinda rude. But the class was pretty easy, just tedious with a 300-500 word discussion board each week. tests were all online, and the exams were just the questions and answers from the previous tests in that section
Herber is very knowledgeable but can be arrogant. He is fair and the hybrid is all hands on lab which I liked. I did not like his attitude towards people if he was asked for help. No reason to be rude since as an instructor, he should be there to instruct.
I took a hybrid class & basically taught myself everything. We stopped having lectures, just had lab. He sits on his phone in lab, won't hold your hand but will answer questions if you ask. Go to lab or you won't pass the unknown bacteria. 4 tests, each 15% of your grade + homework. Take him if you want an easy grader. Overall I'd take someone else
I took a 16 week hybrid and it was the easiest-most fun class ever! Exams are all online except for the final, you can easily get 100% on all of the online exams. You learn everything you need to know for the unknown lab which is 30% of your overall grade. You will only struggle if you dont show up for lab or expect to be helped. Hes great!
Great professor! Offers a lot of extra credit and more times than not he let's the exams be open-book. Don't worry too much about the lab final because you will be well prepared for it. His lectures are never boring because he knows the topics very well and he tells a lot of stories to go along with them. He also curves the exams.
AND caring, inspirational, accessible outside of class, gives A+ feedback. Great help to my future. EARNED department chair role of Melbourne campus - well, duh. BC hes the best!!! Straightforward/passionate/setting you up for SUCCESS. REIGNITED my passion towards a future medical career. HERBER GIVES MORE THAN A CLASS, HES THE BEST!!!!!!!!
Professor Herber was fantastic. This way by far my favorite class Ive taken so far. I honestly looked forward to it! He explained things thoroughly but he sure to ask questions if you dont understand them. We mainly met in the lab but our tests were all online. If you do the bookwork and actually turn it in youre guaranteed to get an A.
DO NOT DO IT ONLINE! We write at least 500 words per week plus quizzes. Most are found you know where! It's only the second week and I'm stressed! Apparently he's good in person but do not do it online! This week alone we have 1000 words to write! I didn't even do this in my English classes. Don't listen to the other reviews.
Professor Herber is the reason I finally know what my passion in the healthcare field is. His class provided so many components in which to use critical thinking, and the experiments with the various specimens were incredible. I just wish he taught more of the bachelor's classes.
I took his microbiology class online because of covid and its one of the easiest A's I've gotten, and I do not like science!
I took Anatomy and human physiology and had a good experience. I maintained an A throughout the course. Weekly there was around two discussions to complete along with a quiz. There's alot of writing weekly (500-1000 words) but i just got my answers from the textbook and rephrased it. Its an easy A if you stay on top of things bc the work isn't hard
If it wasn't required I would have dropped the class (and I have never dropped a class). He is very rude, and every single one of his assignments have the wrong due date. When I told him they were wrong he said it was my own fault not his. He also assigns about 1000 words a week, and a 10 page research paper, which he never taught us how to write.
Easy class, gives you notes, pretty easy assignments. There was a good amount of work
worked out in the end, but did not feel expectations always clear. asked questions about lab final exam and responded "don't worry about it". lots of quizlet answers available. he's ok.
