Rushes through complex material in an unorganized fashion. I doubt he prepares much. Very unflexble towards students with special needs (i.e. Jobs). Grade totally depends on student abscense regardless of testreults.
He is very thorough. His work may be intimidating to some, but if you keep up and ask him what you don't understand, he's there to help you. If you show dedication to his class(es), he's right along with you.
I took Astronomy a couple semesters ago. He was a REALLY good teacher. If you need help or have ?'s ask, he will help you out. A LOT of work, but there is so much to learn. I being a procrastinator did very poorly in his class. Keep up on the wor
This guy knows his stuff and teaches it well. I learned so much from him. (A little interest in learning about the universe on the students' part helps with this class)
He is truly one of the greatest college instructors I have ever had, perhaps the greatest thus far. He is indeed very thorough with course material, and is always ready and willing to help you succeed. I cannot ask for a better astronomy instructor.
It's not an easy class. There's a lot of work to succeed in his class. However, he's willing to help you to succeed not only in his class, but anything academic as well. His class lecture is interesting; he explains well and definitely one of the greatest teacher at Chabot.
Really nice guy and very passionate about the sky. I really enjoyed his class, but I will admit, it is pretty difficult.
Took his Astronomy class online. There is a lot or work and time needed to devot to this class but the teacher is helpful and there is no way a person shuold not pass the class.
ok this teacher has fun class...i learned alot in his class...but his test are so so hard...its like u thought u leaned the material but the test just bashes u down..other than extremely amounts of work and hard test its a good class
What's this crap about the class being hard? You get only 6 HW assignments for the WHOLE semester. The Mid term and Final, he already tells you what questions are going to be on there! Plus he's a great guy, and always willing to help you out.
I really liked him. He is a geek to the core, but very helpful and very smart.
great teacher. very clear in lectures, and gives a ton of memory serving devices for help in preparing for tests. hw due only once every couple weeks. gives midterm and final questions word for word to prepare for tests.
he is a good teacher, you will fall asleep a few times, my advice buy the cheat sheet in the book store, memorize those constalations and do your work and you'll get at least a B in this class.
He's cool and he never shows anger when I kid him about his white ibm stle shirt everyday. He's cool

Do all the work and you'll be fine. He's willing to help. Different kind of humor. Very very smart!
Made it very clear what he wanted. Gave out a study guide for the tests. He just wants to make sure that you know what You need to know. He is really nice, as long as you arent very annoying already. He is very passionate about the subject, and knows a lot about other things as well.
BEST TEACHER EVER! EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND UNDERSTANDING!
Scott is one of those rare individuals who was born to teach. He's tough but fair, always willing to help you out if you need it and has the super swanky geek thing going on.
i highly recommend his class. he is a FANTASTIC teacher. do the work, work hard and youll get a good grade. very smart person.
Scott's interests are of course mainly in the sciences, but he's got excellent knowledge and fascinating insights into many other areas. A good grade in his class is worth more to me than in any other teacher's. He doesn't make a class hard just to make your life difficult, but because he believes in being passionate and dedicated to learning.
Scott is a very level headed individual with enough wit and banter to entertain even those who are not inclined towards the sciences. He is extremely clear and concise with his expectations and the manner in which he teaches his course. By far, he is quite simply, the best instructor I have had in ages. Don't let the difficulty disuade you.
Excellent instructor. Class may be a bit hard, but I learned a whole lot more in this class than any of my classes I've ever taken in this school. If he teaches anymore classes that I need, I will definitely take it.
Very, very helpful and intelligent instructor. He gives lengthy homework assignments and online quizzes and tutorials every week, which are a pain in the rear but just do those and you'll pass. He is very passionate about astronomy and loves to hear students' comments. A great class, I learned SO much
Mr. Hildreth is one of those few teachers that is still passionate about his profession. He is very clear on assignments and explains exactly what is going to be on the test. There is plenty of homework to do but all of it is pretty easy, you just need to take the time to do it. He is a great teacher!! The best!
One of the most influential teachers at this school. Definitely reaches out to those who are looking for guidance in anything inside and outside of class. His lectures open minds and his homework assignments create debate. Mr. H puts the universe in perspective. Since taking this class my major has changed to science.
EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND KNOWS HIS STUFF! WEEKLY HW, BUT MAKES IT INTERESTING TO CAPTIVATE YOUR ATTENTION...STRONGLY RECCOMEND
I RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO TAKE THIS CLASS!Prof Hildreth is epitome of a great prof.! I admire and look up to him. This guy knows everything about anything! He's very open. You can tell he has a passion for teaching AND the subjects hes teaching. He should receive the TEACHER OF THE MILLENIUM AWARD! Youll come in knowing nothing and comeout knowing alot
Online class has a 250 word essay every week with two response to other students, one chapter test, and one web site quiz. two much word, but it's an ok class. should be worth 5 units instead of three
Class was not that hard but it wasnt easy. I took his class online but I heard the class in person is harder. But he is a really good teacher, probably the best Astronomy teacher at Chabot. Really knows his stuff and explains stuff in ways where the average person can understand. If you want an A its possible but expect to work your butt off.
I took this class online and was expecting a very tough class with a strict teacher. The subject is hard but the teacher made the content easy for the average person to understand. Prof is helpful if you ask for help, he goes above and beyond to help you understand. The online class is one of the easiest classes to navigate w/clear instruction.
Scott is so organized, personable, fair and very clear on the requirements of his class. It would be hard to fail his class as he makes Astronomy fun and interesting, even to me an Accounting Major!
He's really dope and helpful. All that you need to turn in even by the end of the semester, excluding the tests are already in the palms of your hands on the first week. I'm new to chabot, but he's really made it easy.
After taking this class I was more interested in Scienece and Astronomy. He gives A LOT of extra credit. So there is no way that you can fail the class. He was very helpful and knowledgable on the subject. I also loved how we could take the quizes twice and see what questions we got wrong. Over all this was a really fun class to take.
Easy class to take, but he's really hard on grading. He's very opinionated, if he knows what he wants to see in your answers. If he doesn't, then you'll get marked down for not mentioning it. My friend and I took the class, and 3/4 of the time we never received a perfect score. Just NEAR perfect.
He's so dorky and funny! Great teacher, cares about the material and his students. His class is not easy, or the most interesting, but he's the best you're gonna get when it's Astronomy we're talking about.
Awesome guy! Even though some of the labs were headache-inducing, his witty comments and great attitude get you through. He obviously cares about astronomy (and physics) as much as he does his students. Take extra time on the lab reviews to really think critically and discuss what you learned; it'll show in your final grade. Would take him again!
TAKE THIS CLASS!! After extensive experience at CC and CSUEB, Hildreth has proven beyond any doubt to be the most dedicated & skilled professor at either school. While the class can be challenging, it leaves you inspired & striving to do your best. With great humor & comprehensive understanding, he can convey ANY aspect clearly and articulately.
I took Prof. Hildreth for lab. He is the most passionate and helpful teacher I have had at Chabot. The class is not a piece of cake, but the work is very doable if you show up to class consistently and turn in weekly reviews that are a couple of paragraphs and does not take very long to do. He's got genuine concern to help students learn.Good guy.
Mr. Hildreth is the best teacher I've had in my life! The class is indeed hard, but a C in his class is better than an A with any other teacher. He is very knowledgable and so passionate about the subject that he actually made me love physics for the 1st time in my life! I learned ALOT in his class. if you want to learn physics, take Mr. Hildreth!
Take the lab if you can when you take the ASTRO class. It will make everything more relevent. This is a science class so it is hard. The subject is very interesting and so is Prof H. He is so passionate about his classes, you can't help but learn. Do the work & you will pass. In Fall 2010, the planetarium will be up again, take ASTRO for science.
To be honest, this teacher is VERY uptight about tedious little details. This class is not that easy or hard, but EXTREMELY time consuming. If you have other classes then i suggest you pick another astro teacher because he loves to constantly have you doing work. If you dont have to hate your life for a semester, dont take this class
This class is time-consuming, but if you are interested in astronomy, take it. Scott assigns weekly writing assignments, online tutorials, and quizzes. Midterm & final posted at the beginning of semester so you can study at will. Scott's an amazing teacher who will provide you all the resources you will ever need. Also, take lab if you can!
This was a class that made me remember how much I love science. If you just want to sit back and learn to gaze AND NAME the stars. Take this class. It's located in the chabot mini planetarium. Apart from that, he's a very entertaining prof who has a quirky way of making you pay attention. One of the many things i'll miss @ Chabot :)
Great prof, very caring. Response to very message and goes above and beyond tobe helpful.
30% of grade is weekly fluff writing assignments based more in philosophy than astronomy. midterm and final are all essay questions, graded subjectively. i never know what answer he's looking for. he asks a question, i answer, but in grading he'll ask why i didn't include details he never asked for. why doesn't he just tell us what he wants?
very hard teacher and the test are confusing and extremely random stay away
I am currently taking this class and it is very difficult. His test are very hard, if you spend a lot of time and i mean a lot of time on this class then you will probably be able to pass but if you cant then i would suggest take a different teacher because in his class you got to work hard. Overall very hard class would recommend different teacher
It was a very very hard class, barely passed.
I have taken Professor Hildreth's class twice. I did not have any knowledge of subject or solar system. It is a great class. Students have to read the material, prepare for test/quizzes. He is helpful, just ask and he can give you suggestions to improve. You have to put in the hard work for it to get a good grade, not the teacher.
HANDS DOWN the BEST Physics teacher at Chabot. if you want to learn physics, this is your professor. his quizzes/tests are hard but they are very fair, you will find that if you keep up with his lectures, do the homework, go to office hours, that you will do just fine in the class and get an A.
BEST TEACHER AT CHABOT! Passionate about the subject and it's infectious. Not an easy class, though! You need to read the book and do the online homework along with weekly written assignments. It's not easy subject matter, but it's worth it to learn. He pulls no punches and expects a great deal of you. Prepares you for university! TAKE HIS CLASS!
His class is HARD. It'll be the hardest class you've ever taken, even if you feel like you've taken hard classes before. BUT, Hildreth appreciates hard work, and it will be rewarded. Even if you're averaging D's on test, you could end up with a B or an A, just due to the amount of effort you put in. Besides, Hildreth's the best! :)
One of the hardest, most rewarding classes I have ever taken. You will work harder than ever and will receive low grades. Why take it? You will learn - about physics and more about what you want to do in the future. Professor Hildreth cares about his students. He believes in his students even when students don't believe in themselves.
A brilliant teacher! I highly recommend this class if you enjoy astronomy. He always makes time for his students after class & even before class. He doesn't have very many big hw assignments only 7 throughout the semester. Highly recommended to get MasteringAstro. It's a fun class. Teacher is very detailed. He gives the exam qs on the very 1st day
Definitely a hard class but totally worth it. Scott is VERY clear about how he wants HW assignments/discussions to be. You will spend amble time on the online HW but you also learn a ton. When you take this, you get to sit in the comfy seats in the awesome planetarium where you get to learn constellations! It's really super great.
intends to be good teacher, but present materials too fast to comprehend. when you leave lecture you feel like a zombie. exams 13ish problems! only genius can solve that many problems in 1 class. he good at office hours though.
Great teacher. Makes most of his lectures interesting to the best of his ability. He cares about all of his students and all of their different beliefs. There is a lot of work to do in this class but it is most often very interesting. If you want to learn interesting facts and do not mind doing some work take this class.
Took him for physics 4B, At the beginning of the class he made it so complicated, He's a hard grader. You better keep up with all the stuff in class because if u submit online hw 1 min late its already 50% off. Also his teaching speed is way too fast, he expects you to know the stuffalready. His test are very hard and long. AVOID TAKING THIS GUY
So his class is no joke when it comes to Physics. He is a very intelligent teacher who cares a lot about his students and never gives up on them. VERY hard tests, LOTS of Homework and A TON of studying. He will keep pushing you to try, which is what motivated everyone. Hardest and greatest teacher I've had so far
lectures feel rushed, concepts also rushed and not highlighted, he is very good at doing math on board. TONS of homework which is good but also time consuming. midterms have little room for error. class for people who want to test their gpa. good luck.
It was a pretty cool class IMO. You get to study the planets and most importantly the stars. There will be readings to cover and quizzes, It was really a fun class to be at. Once you enter the class he'll most likely be playing a song that references space which is cool (Train-Drops of Jupiter will be playing for sure). A good class to register.
Mr. Hildreth teaches in the planetarium which is hands down the coolest classroom at Chabot. He really tries his best to make sure you understand everything 100 percent, and goes out of his way for his students (his website has all lectures, assignments, calendar, everything all in one place. Talks fast but understandable. 9outof10 would recommend
My favorite teacher
I really had no interest in Astronomy. I just needed the credit to transfer. However, Scott made class interesting and you could tell that he was passionate about the material. The thing that turned me off was the massive amount of reading and online homework you had to complete every week.
His lecture class might be easy but his lab class is not that great. He WON'T help you when you have question. The only thing you can do is talk to your group and figure out by yourself, then why we need a teacher? And he expect too much in every lab report.
The first couple assignments I struggled with but was able to make it up by doing the numerous extra credit assignments that he gives. At the beginning of the semester on the syllabi he gave us the essay questions that are on the midterm and final. He makes science interesting even for those who aren't interested.
Scott Hildreth is the epitome of an Astronomer. If you want to take an interesting class that is guided by a teacher that really knows his material, take him. You have to earn your A as with anything in life. The essay homework he assigns throughout the semester really engraves the material in your brain so you have take home knowledge. Awesome!
Probably the best teacher I've ever had. His class is a lot of work, but in the end if you put in the time and do your best to *learn* the material you'll do well. Take if you are willing to work hard and learn a lot about Physics!!! I want to be just like him when I grow up.
Scott is an AMAZING professor. I recommend taking his lab class while taking regular astro because it makes things a lot easier. He is a professor and truly wants to see you succeed, and as long as you put in work and show that you want to pass, you will have no problems with him. Very nice and caring man; has a great sense of humor as well.
He's a cool teacher. There is some math involved, take astro 10 or 20 before astro 30, and when you're done with the lab you write a review/summary about it(the homework is due once a week). DON'T LEAVE CLASS EARLY, if you do tell him why you're leaving. The homework is 30 pts. No quizzes, and for the mid-term/final you draw the moon and the stars.
Over-complicated physics course. only 3 people out of about 60 students actually received an A. the exams were out right ridiculous and didn't reflect what we went over in class. lectures are ok but very fast paced. told some students to change their majors because HE didn't believe they would make it. I'm warning you, AVOID! TONS OF HOMEWORK
If you can survive this class, you can do anything. Most caring professor I've ever had, replied to an email I sent about a homework problem within 5 minutes... AT THREE AM. Will also electrify your passion for learning. Met one of my best friends in his class. This man is who I want to be when I grow up.
One of my all time favorite teachers! I took him last semester, and I have never met a more compassionate teacher. All our homework was online, and the corresponding quizzes weren't hard. Midterm and final were a little harder, but he grades more heavily on essay questions. Frequent short papers were assigned to keep us engaged. Recommend!
He was a really really good teacher and gave an extra credit section for each assignment and a whole additional assignment that could be turned in and boost your grade. The assignments were really easy to understand and took 10-35 minutes to do each. He gives the midterm and final essay prompts the first day of class so you can prepare.
His lectures are very good if you pay attention and study a little ahead. Any class with person sucks, lots of homework. I did not do most of the homework. I was busy studying the actually material. Recommend studying the book and bridging problems. If you understand the subject you will get over 40 on the midterms and that is enough for a C.
Scott is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He fully understands the subject matter, and understands how to help students not only comprehend it but also to love it the way he does. Combined with an amazing 360 planetarium, Scott makes this class a must-take.
Scott is for the students. He made me love Astronomy and gave me great knowledge. This course was awesome, he makes video lectures to allow a better understanding for online. Learning about Astronomy with, classmates, my family, and the professor; made it memorable and fun. We explore the Universe with a Professor with facts. Loved everything!
One of the hardest classes I've taken, but taught by the best teacher at Chabot. He doesn't just teach physics; he helps you get ready to excel at a four-year program. And the proof he is great came from a ton of past students who are now at Cal or Davis or SJSU, who came back to share they did succeed. Amazing dedication. Grades exams in 1 day!!
This was a great class, and Scott is a great teacher. He is very encouraging and engaging. Always answers questions, even questions not specifically related to class. This course has a lot of work, but if you stay organized, you'll be fine. Scott gives every opportunity for students to succeed. You'll want to take every class he offers!
Scott Hildreth is the best astronomy teacher here at Chabot. I took him in Fall of 2016, which was a year ago, but he made astronomy fun and enjoyable. We also used the old learning system instead of the new one, so the class was much easier with the old one. Take Astronomy with Scott Hildreth! You will learn a lot and have loads and loads of fun!!
Very tough teacher who gives a lot of homework and hard tests. Don't reccomend
Professor Hildreth was an amazing teacher. It was my first semester back after 6 years of not being in school and though his class was a bit challenging, his lectures are very engaging (Scott is hilarious). His lesson plans are all very interesting making it easy to learn. He is a very caring person and gives a lot of feedback. Loved the class!
He is a great professor. He is funny and entertaining. Lectures are interesting. The only thing I don't like about this class is we need to write the survey and write a paper about it.
I highly recommend taking his class. He recommends you buy the online version of the textbook as there are quizzes and other helpful tools that will help with midterm essay and final essay. You should go to class even if it's not mandatory because it is nice just to lean back in the chair and look up at the top of the planetarium.
Highly recommend Prof. Hildreth. Lectures are entertaining and very interesting. He is very passionate in Astronomy and is very knowledgeable. You need to attend class every time if you're aiming for an A. Follow his outline for reviews on his syllabus if you're struggling. He's very helpful and genuinely determined to assist you in the subject.
My absolute favorite professor. I've taken all of the astro classes offered and am hoping to take him for physics, despite the inevitable difficulty. He goes far out of his way to support you and sees your true potential when you put forth the effort and communicate with him. He's also incredibly honest and doesn't put up with less than your best.
Professor Hildreth is supportive and accessible outside of the class. Participation matters in this class. If you take this class online be prepared to do a few research based discussion boards throughout the semester and one chapter reading every week. He is a tough grader on the writing assignments so you need to put a good amount of effort.
I took Astro10 / Astro30 lab class simultaneously with him and had nothing but a positive experience. Tough subject but he always responds to his emails within the same day. For his lab class, he'll provide snacks for your group and even hot coco on cold nights. Very passionate about what he does and cares about his students. I highly recommend!!!
He is an awesome professor. He is super good about answering questions and giving feedback, as long as you ask.
Amazing instructor. He brings his love for teaching and hopes to press for you to truly learn something. He does give a good amount of homework but if you do the homework then the rest of the class becomes considerably easier. And stay on top of your lab reports.
Ahh he's such a wonderful person! He gives you so many options to getting the grade you want in his class. His lectures are amazing, though he spends most of class talking about other things. I went the "go for the A" route, so it was a LOT of work, but he's always so encouraging. I felt good about myself and my abilities. Take him! He's awesome!
Fantastic online experience. He has a clear weekly schedule and videos explaining information. He sends reminders to help you stay on top of workload. He does expect you to participate actively in discussions and respond to classmates. Learned a lot in a fun way. His topics were fun and challenging and paired well with the book.
Scott is amazing professor and passionate about subject. When he is lecturing, I could feel the vibe of learning more and more. He is always available and gets back to you as soon as possible. He is also heavy homework giver but all is fair as you are required to do work to know the subject.
Very great teacher who is very understanding. I love how Hes passionate about learning about planets and how the earth moves and mostly the moon phases! He doesnt give out so much homework which is good, and if he does he gives it to you that week and its not to till the next week. If you dont understand a concept or have questions message
Amazing teacher! Always positive and encouraging. Really wants to see students improve and always looks for way to help students as much as possible. Difficult class with tons of hw, but that's what makes it a good class. The harder the class the more you learn. He is very live in the classroom, and you can learn a lot from him.
Tough grader on tests. But good teacher overall
Dr. Hildreth is an amazing professor that truly cares about his work. His class will require two homework and a lab every week, no matter if there is a test or final. However, he is always willing to help. He understands the subject is incredibly difficult and takes practice. Take this course with other easy GE courses and you will finish with an A
I took Scott for 4A and 4B and couldnt ask for a better prof. His classes are hard but he understands that everyone struggles. Two midterms and a final. Midterms have test corrections which help A LOT. Lectures can be boring at times but he teaches the material very well. Fast at responding to emails and genuinely wants his students to succeed.
Lectures are pretty light, mostly activity-based, labs write-ups are the hardest part but still pretty easy.
What a great professor. I took him initially for Astronomy, and then for Physics 4A. For physics 4A, it was definitely a tough class but certainly manageable. Classes taught by Hildreth certainly prepare you for the difficulty of a 4-year university. I am currently at Cal Poly and if it wasn't for Scott I would not be here today.
Professor Scott is one of the best professors I've ever encountered. He is very passionate about science and physics. Physics4B is a very difficult subject, probably the hardest physics IMO. But, this professor makes the class worth it.
He's an amazing professor. Super passionate about the subject and very helpful towards students. The lectures were all really cool, especially since we had them in the planetarium.
Bro think he gilgamesh :skull:
Dude's a funny character. Loves to teach. Very inspirational and encourages students to do their very best. Assigns a good amount of homework but is very manageable and you will learn a lot. His best advice for our class was to treat community college as if we were at a top university. In his case UC Berkeley. Followed his advice and got accepted.
Took professor Hildreth over the spring and now at a 4 year university. To say that his teaching style prepared me for the jump from CC is an understatement. He really is passionate about his teaching and prepares all his students for the kind of workload they will receive at university. Highly recommend his class. Best physics professor there.
