He was very good at teaching and lecturing.
Super super nice guy, but it can feel like a heavy workload.
There wasn't a single day that we were not laughing hysterically at Brother Howells jokes. I feel so prepared for my Mission now, and I could not recommend this class enough!
Brother Howell is a great teacher! He has so much knowledge on missions and I learned so much from him! I feel so much more prepared for my mission. There is a lot of reading and assignments, but nothing too hard.
He's great
Very spiritually strengthening and engaging. Workload was a decent amount, but nothing crazy. Just make sure to stay up to date on everything.
He awesome and gives you lots of helpful resources that will help you on a mission. Totally worth the taking.
Brother Howell really makes sure that you are aware of the resources available to prepare as a missionary. The classes themselves are pretty chill. Be prepared to do role plays with a group and to do service!
Brother Howell is a very good teacher and very knowledgeable. Make sure to attend class and do all the homework and the class is not hard to get a good grade in!
Brother Howell is a great guy and I learned so much in mission prep. Although there was a lot of reading, I felt like it wasn't busy work or too crazy for the class.
A very good teacher who definetly follows the Spirit in his class. However, because of this sometimes lectures are not very structured and we do not always get through the important things. I also took him during the summer term though so everything was a little condensed.
This class will prepare you for a mission if you let it. Put in the work and the resources and knowledge Brother Howell will provide you with will bless your life whether you serve a mission or not.
As long as you get your work done, this is an easy class. Often graded by the honor system.
Professor Howell's Mission Prep class was one of the most impactful courses I have taken. He created a great environment where the Spirit could be felt and truly cares for each students. There is a good amount of reading and small weekly assignments. I left class feeling well prepared. I highly recommend talking this course!
If you keep up with the work, it won't be hard at all
Very good teacher. All you need to do is show up for class.
He's a great teacher, and the coarseload isn't too bad. Just make sure you stay on top of your highlighting and notes and you'll be all good.
Brother Howell is a great teacher! He really cares about his students and truly desires that everyone succeed. Please take his class it will change your perspective!
He was a great professor and I loved his class.
I loved this professor and you can tell he wants the best for all his students
He's a nice, funny, spiritual guy but he his pretty strict on attendance, tardies, participation and then he does give homework on Sunday.
Pretty easy if you do all your work on time.
Brother Howell is an excellent teacher who has amazing passion for missionary work! He does an excellent job communicating expectations and teaching concepts. Make sure you do all of the readings and homework assignments on time or early and you will get an A.
Such a fire professor, overall great man of God and amazing class!
He was great. He was able to get to know and connect with all of us.
Brother Howell and this class were completely awesome.
Scott Howell Genuinely cared for our class. We weren't the most locked in however when he spoke, it came from the spirit and you could tell he really wanted the best for us.
Good teacher enjoyed the class but was much more work outside of class then I was expecting.
He truly is the nicest ever and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students.
The class was super easy. A few assignments a week. Mandatory attendance (25% of grade). Rest of grading was easy assignments. A lot of the class is graded by you, on your honor. This class is really chill. No tests. You need a Preach My Gospel and Adjusting to Missionary Life (physical copies). You also use Gospel Library a lot. Grading is chill.
Haven't even finished the course and felt the need to get on here and warn future students about how much busy work this class has. The professor is a nice guy, but the dude makes you download maybe 10 apps for the course, and you have to take notes for EVERYTHING. There's a few assignments due every other day. No structure in this class at all.
Professor Howell is an amazing professor! I had him for Mission Prep and highly recommend his class. You learn practical tips for your mission, know what to expect in the field. There are no exams, quizzes, or finals which is super nice. The weekly schedule is consistent making it easy to stay on track.
He is awesome. Lots of busy work that is basically self graded (Ex. did you do the reading this week yes or no). You make it as hard or as easy as you want and you choose what you get out of it. You get what you put it but he is awesome. He def loves what he's doing and gives you so many good resources for your mission.
Full of energy and engages well with students!
I loved Brother Howell's mission prep class! Every morning I was uplifted and motivated to be the best missionary possible. All the assignments we had to do are definitely going to benefit me when I'm a missionary. The assignments were easy but super helpful. Take this class!!!!
I genuinely love Brother Howell! He has made me so flipping excited to serve the Lord, and his class is super easy. You just get the homework done and listen in class, then you'll have an A! He is the best and you can tell he seriously loves the gospel and missionary work!
I cannot recommend taking mission prep with Brother Howell enough. This was easily my favorite class this semester because of how it made me feel every day.
I loved brother Howell!!! He was an amazing teacher! Participation is important (but shouldn't we be participating anyways??), and attendance is mandatory. But this class was so much fun!! Brother Howell is so so kind, and he is willing to work with students to help them succeed in his class.
Scott Howell is the best!! He is hilarious, and very sweet. Class is fun and helps you prepare very well for a mission. He gives you so many resources that you can use on your mission. Super helpful and an easy and entertaining class. Loved it. Assignments were not hard. Some took longer, but all were helpful in preparing for a mission.
He is actually amazing! Not that much work each week, and it's graded really easily. Attendance is worth 25 percent of your grade, so if you go and do the work, you'll get an A!
Amazing professor. Great pacing and work load. Great preparation for missionary work.
He was amazing! I loved how he taught mission prep because it was not only spiritual, but also helped me logistically. I truly feel prepared to go on a mission because of this class.
Brother Howell is great! There is a lot of work that might seem like busy work, but is very beneficial if you are serious about going on a mission. There are a lot of assignments that introduce helpful resources. Keep up on the assignments and you should be fine.
Great class, the professor really knows a lot about the mission field. This class is seriously so great if you're planning on serving a mission, or if you're on the fence on whether or not you should serve.
Professor Howell is a very kind and caring person who teaches very well. I would definitely recommend taking a class from him.
He gives us a LOT of assignments, that's the biggest thing. But with everything considered, these assignments are pretty small, so it's like a little at a time. This class isn't exactly hard because there aren't any exams, and some of these assignments are pretty enjoyable to do.
Incredibly easy class. Lots of extra credit. An A is 95%, but that's super easy to get. Very easy grader. Most things are on your honor, so you get out of the class what you put in. Attendance is mandatory, but he drops 3 classes. Very nice professor.
Scott Howell is the best! He is so funny and you can tell he cares about each and every one of us!
Professor Howell's class really does effectively prepare you as a missionary. He brings in a lot of guest speakers and people from various backgrounds of missionaries that will come and speak and give insights into different parts of your mission. HW is read PMG, AML, BOM, Gratitude Journal, Mark Scriptures (CLA), make up the bulk of your grade.
He's super nice and has a genuine love for his students. This class is all about being more familiar with mission materials and becoming familiar with learning about the gospel and how to share it. It's all about tips and logistics which can be a little overwhelming. But it helps you gain confidence and excitement to serve!
Professor Howell was the best teacher I could have had for Mission Prep! He clearly explained what was important as a missionary and what we can do now to prepare for a mission. His assignments are always very easy and his classes are engaging. I would definitely recommend!
Brother Howell's mission prep class is amazing! I feel so much more confident about my mission because of what I participated in and learned in this class!
Best professor ever! Actually watch the safety zone videos and make sure to read/annotate preach my gospel. It feels annoying to do those assignments sometimes but that's the stuff that has helped me feel so much more prepared for my mission.
Love him and his class! As long as you go to class, you'll be fine!
He is amazing. You can tell he really cares about his students and puts a lot of effort into the class. His teaching style was clear and assignments, though slightly repetitive, never felt unnecessary.
I absolutely LOVED this class. Brother Howell is extremely caring and so fun to listen to. You can tell he really wants his students to succeed both in the class, and even more out in the mission field. As long as you keep up with reading PMG, AML, and the scriptures you will do very well in this class!
Professor Howell's mission prep class has prepared me well for a mission. I learned a lot from this class and it strengthened my testimony as well. It is easy to get an A as long as you do all the work he asks of you. There is a lot of work but it is all very helpful in preparing for a mission and in just strengthening your testimony in general.
Brother Howell is a great professor and he genuinely cares about the well being of his students. If you just do your work and stay on top of things, you will do great in the class. There isn't much homework, and the lectures are fun! I would take notes just because it benefits you, not because they are required.
Scott Howell is an amazing teacher. I loved his class. There are lots of small assignments, but they are easy to complete. It is a very helpful, low-stress class.
Brother Howell is the best mission prep teacher at BYU, he is so amazing. There are 3-4 small assignments due each week, they are fairly easy and don't take too much time. This class and teacher definitely helped prepare me to serve a mission.
I really enjoyed being in his mission prep class. There is a fair amount of work, but it all feels very relevant to serving a mission, and it's graded based on completion. Brother Howell's lectures are engaging, and he's super kind!
Brother Howell is just the best! He truly gives so much information concerning missions, and is successful in making all of his students prepared and excited to serve and do the Lord's work!
It was a great class. The professor is a very nice guy. His lectures were always very interesting and relevant. He genuinely cares about his students and wants everyone to pass.
Brother Howell is the nicest, most sincere, and funny guy. He genuinely cares for us. I finished all of my assignments a month before the class ended. Highly Recommend.
Assignment heavy but all of it was necessary. Very good professor, I felt very prepared.
I took REL 130 (mission prep). He is very knowledgeable and sweet! I learned lot of things that I wouldn't have imagined I would need to know before a mission. He has prepared me well and I am grateful! There were many assignments with reading that took time, but it prepared me! I am amazed by his ability to bring the spirit into the classroom!
Brother Howell is an amazing teacher. He is super caring of all of his students and really loves the missionaries. His lectures are amazing and this course will help you be super prepared and ready for your mission!
I absolutely love Brother Howell!! I look forward to coming to class every day, and it never feels like a burden to come. He is so caring, and knows what he's doing! I've felt the Spirit so strong multiple times over the course of the semester, and would recommend this class to everyone!
Scott Howell is an amazing professor and is really passionate about missionary work. I felt like this class did not have busy work and everything we did and learned in it was very beneficial. He really cares about all his students and it makes the class so impactful.
Super easy work, we taught lessons to each other 3 times over the semester and it was really fun. Served missionaries dinner at the MTC which was a really cool opportunity. Love Brother Howell, it took me a second to love his class but I got there.
Professor Howell was an amazing teacher! Decent amount of assignments due but none of them are hard so it's very manageable. You can tell he loves mission work and really cares about the class he teaches. Would definitely recommend.
I love Brother Howell! He is so passionate about the Gospel and missionaries. There aren't any tests and the assignments are super manageable. It is easy to get a grade. Totally recommend him as a professor!
He is a great professor with easy assignments. I think he is very insightful, and I loved hearing all of his wisdom about serving a mission.
This professor was really boring, but super easy. If you are looking for a class that is super easy, and you just need the credit, this is the class. He teaches like how a you would think a slideshow would if it was a person. So warning boring.
Professor Howell is an amazing professor! I enjoyed his class and it strengthen my knowledge about Christ like charity and overall strengthen my testimony. I learned a lot from this class and I can't wait to serve a mission!
Brother Howell is a good teacher who loves his students and it's easy to see how much he cares for them. He loves what he teaches, and he teaches it well. It's not hard, but you still learn a lot.
Brother Howell was invaluable in helping me become ready for my mission! I am so grateful for what I learned in this class.
Prof. Howell knows how to set up a class that makes you work and gain the benefits from your work. I appreciate his priorites in the materials he teaches and openness about experiences and testimonies gained through each concept or material we study! Be open to what he has to offer and it will be useful! Very kind and enthusiastic professor!
I loved taking Mission Prep from Professor Howell! While there is a decent amount of homework, including annotating Preach My Gospel and Adjusting to Missionary Life, it is broken up reasonably so you're never overloaded. If you do your work, you'll do well. Almost everything is a completion grade, but it's still worth it to try and put effort.
Brother Howell is an amazing teacher and very loving towards his students. He does an amazing job preparing students to serve missions. There is a fair amount of assignments, but they are all very applicable to missionary work.
Professor Howell is really nice and cares about every student! This class does help prepare you for a mission, however, it did have a lot of work that went with it and a lot of reading. Overall, pretty easy A if you do all the assignments with any effort, just expect the assignments and readings to take a while.
Brother Howell is the best! He knows exactly what future missionaries need, and I feel much more prepared now than I did at the beginning of this semester. You get what you put into the class, but I loved it and would highly recommend him as a professor!!
He is literally the best! definitely my favorite professor. he is hilarious and you can see his passion and love for missions and missionaries. He is so wise and helped me SO much with my preparation for my mission. I highly highly recommend taking his mission prep class- he is amazing!
There was nothing about this course that was particularly awful, but the course load was way too heavy. The assignments were enjoyable at times, but half were just busy work. I would recommend Brother Howell if you want to invest more time in your mission prep, but if you are looking for a simpler course, then I would recommend someone else.
Brother Howell is the perfect professor for this class! He's had so much experience with missionaries, and just knows exactly what future missionaries need to know before serving. The course itself had a bit more work than I was expecting (which wasn't a lot), but Howell does an amazing job at giving it to you in manageable pieces.
Great professor, would take him again! Limited out of class work but it is all useful (not any busy work) He gives us so many resources, he cares!
There are attendance quizzes and in-class reflections each class. There aren't any tests and the main assignments are reading and marking Preach My Gospel and Adjusting to Missionary Life. Super easy assignments and he's a pretty nice guy.
This class was kind of useful for my mission, but honestly felt like a waste class. There was an in-class reflection every class that made it hard to actually sit back and learn. He also isn't very organized and jumps around teaching about random topics; I felt like I learned almost nothing. You can tell that he cares for his students though!
Brother Howell makes this class easy because he is focused more on us becoming great missionaries than testing us. He is very knowledgeable and I loved learning from him. I absolutely recommend him, he is the best.
Professer Howell is such a kind and respectable person. He cares a lot about missionary work. Class is easy.
Awesome teacher! He cares so much for all his students, and wants them to succeed.
I absolutely LOVED this class and Brother Howell is amazing! I feel so much more prepared to serve a mission now.
He is one of the best religion professors out there, where he would help me to become a better missionary.
Professor Howell is a great professor who is very passionate about missions and serving the Lord! Every class he takes attendance and there is a in class relfection that has questions that go hand in hand with the lecture so you do have to go pretty much every class, but he is super kind and the homework is manageable.
Brother Howell's lectures are easy to understand and include all the answers to the daily quizzes throughout the lecture. Lectures are not just for preparing for a mission, but to prepare you for the rest of your life. There are many reading assignments, but he breaks them down into manageable sizes and gives you plenty of time to get it all done.
There is consistent homework of reading PMG, AML, and watching Safety Zone videos, but it is all good stuff and given in bite-sized amounts throughout the semester. Brother Howell is awesome and very kind and enthusiastic for his students!
Professor Howell is a great teacher for missionary prep! He used to be a Missionary President at the MTC and in other locations, I believe, so he has great experience, stories, connections, and information on what it means to be a missionary! Definitely prepare for lots of homework outside of class! It is all valuable for being a missionary though!
Professor Howell is an awesome professor. He has been a mission president and is now a branch president at the MTC. He has a lot of great advice for those who plan on serving missions. Even if you aren't thinking about a mission, it's a great class to take and it will increase your spiritually.
Professor Howell really knows how to prepare missionaries for the field. I know a lot more resources and skills that will be essential for my mission. 10/10 Plus the course was really easy, and I didn't cheat any of it.
Professor Howell is a great professor and genuinely cares about his students. His class has helped me prepare for my mission and I would definitely recommend it to anyone preparing for a mission. We had a couple of assignments each week but they were all pretty easy and we didn't have any test.
I loved Brother Howell! Attendance is mandatory, but it's worth it! There is a bit of homework, but it's really just reading PMG, AML, and watching safety zone videos. There are also Come Unto Christ assignments, which take a little under an hour, but there are only one a week. No tests/essays, super helpful, I would recommend this class to anyone!
This class was super helpful to get familiar with things before leaving on a mission.
Overall, I thought that this mission prep class was pretty good. Most of the assignments were good and useful, like reading preach my gospel and adjusting to missionary life. However, it did feel like there was a lot of assignments and sometimes it felt a little like busy work. Also keep in mind that attendance is mandatory.
Brother Howell is a wonderful teacher! It is very obvious that he cares about each and every one of his students and cares about making a connection with each of his students. He is super understanding and is willing to work with students who are absent, and provide alternate assignments. His testimony shines so bright and he is so kind.
Brother Howell is passionate about what he teaches. He loves his subject and wants everyone to do the work.
Brother Howell is such an amazing teacher! He is very caring of the students. There is a decent amount of reading, as we read the whole Preach MY Gospel, but it was very helpful in my preparation for my mission.
Brother Howell was AMAZING!! I feel so excited and prepared to serve a mission because of his class. Attendance is mandatory and you will read the entire preach my gospel but it is so worth it. He is so kind and genuinely loves his students. I definitely recommend taking this class!
Good course for preparing for your mission. You can tell Brother Howell really cares!
Great teacher! Helped me prepare for my mission! Wish I could take this class again from him!
Brother Howell is a phenomenal professor! He's very engaging and passionate about what he teaches, and his lectures are hilarious. This course requires you to read all of PMG and Adjusting to Missionary Life, but it is broken up into very manageable sections. Amazing information, and would highly recommend taking this course from Brother Howell!
Professor Howell is a great guy and really cares about his students. My class was pretty quiet but I could see this class being fun if the class engaged more. There was more work then I expected but nothing crazy.
Super fun teacher, will work with you if you need help. Loved his lectures. Very fun professor, definitely recommend.
really nice and fun guy. The class had a lot more homework and classwork than I expected so this class would be great if you are wanting to invest some time and intent into doing all the work that's meant to help prepare you for a mission.
Brother Howell is so awesome I'd definitely recommend taking mission prep from him!
Brother Howell has an obvious passion for this course and for missionary work. He is willing to accommodate and work with you. I highly recommend taking any course from Brother Scott Howell!!
Good class for learning about missions and not too much work! Definitely recommend Brother Howell, he was an amazing professor and really brought class to life.
This is an intense class on homework; it should really be a 3-credit class. But Professor Howell is an amazing teacher. He is super inspirational and gives lots of good advice that is applicable to your actual mission, and also provides you with a lot of good resources that you can use on your mission.
It's a quiz in class he gives you the answers to if you pay attention, easy to follow along. The homework is mainly just reading Preach My Gospel and Adjusting to Missionary Life
I loved this class so much. Brother Howell is amazing and really made me want to go to class everyday. I feel way more prepared for my mission!
Professor Howell is a good teacher who makes the class easy and simple. There are in-class quizzes that are easy to follow along with. Sometimes it feels like he packs too much into one class period.
he prepares you very well to be a missionary. he helps you become very familiar with preach my gospel and so many other missionary materials. yes there are a few assignments a week but they don't take very long and they are very beneficial to feel prepared for the mission. he brought in many people to share their experiences as a missionary.
He really prepares you to use preach my gospel and other missionary resources.
He is actually the best! He's so kind, funny, and truly cares about his students. His classes are not hard, you just have to actually attend class and then keep up on Preach My Gospel and that's really about it! I thoroughly enjoyed this class and truly feel it will help me on my mission.
Brother Howell is a great person to learn from about missionary work. He has had incredible experiences with missions and missionary work and was great at teaching. There was a good amount of reading and homework and things outside of class. Not HARD, just a lot to stay on top of! Getting a good grade is not hard just stay on top of the work
Brother Howell is very caring and obviously passionate about missionary work. He wants his students to be effective missionaries and dedicated disciples of Jesus Christ. He taught a lot of great tools to use as a missionary. I definitely recommend taking his mission prep class.
I am about to leave on my mission and the class helped me gain a deep understanding. My favorite part was all the scriptures we tagged. There are a lot of assignments, but they are small and easy to do. I never got a grade low than an A on any of them. He does expect attendance in every class, but most religion teachers do. Take freshmen year!
This class had a lot of canvas assignments, but it's super easy to get ahead so you don't have to be stressed for busy weeks.
Very organized and very willing to help.
You can tell he loves the gospel and wants you to be as prepared as possible for going out on a mission! Sometimes a lot of his homework feels like busy work, but it can be done fast, and he is an easy grader. Overall, take this class; it is great for a mission, and the professor cares about your success!
I found his lectures and lessons engaging. I don't personally care for the way he does classwork, though. There are so many assignments that the work becomes a box to check instead of helpful prep work.
He was fun to listen to and engaging. Taught a lot about missions are really got you ready. Feels almost like your in the MTC
This class was so helpful for preparing for my mission! All of the assignments were things that were helpful and I didn't feel like there was any busy work. Brother Howell really cares about his students and he loves missionary work!
I loved Professor Howell's class! The assignments and readings are very reasonable. I loved the way he taught and feel way better prepared for my mission because of this class.
Brother Howell is great! There's a good amount of assignments every week, but they aren't hard.
Honestly just the most genuine guy on the planet. Can't recommend him enough.
It was a lot of learning out of Preach my Gospel for homework, but it was very manageable. I have never felt so prepared for my mission. I feel ready to leave.
This was a great class! You do have a lot to read and do, but it helps you know the best things you can do as a missionary.
- Attendance is in a code that is a good chunk of your grade, so come to class -No final exam - Most of he material is participation-based - a lot of surveys - service activities
He's an awesome teacher who loves his work and loves his students. I'd love to take another class from him.
Brother Howell is the sweetest teacher! He always comes very cheerful and you can tell that he speaks from the heart. He genuinely cares about his students, and it is super easy to do well in the class if you show up to class and do the assignments. Most of them are surveys, so it's about spirituality rather than what he thinks is right.
Professor Howell is the best person to take for mission prep. He cares so much about his students and is so funny. This class is a decent amount of “busy work”, but if you do it all it does really prepare you to serve a mission. Nothing is very difficult, just do your work and go to class and you'll get a great grade.
Not a bad class at all. Most of the work was very easy, just took time, and it is clear that Professor Howell cares a ton about missionaries and preparing his students to become missionaries.
Brother Howell is such a great teacher and genuinely cares for his students. If you do the work, you'll get an A and be much more prepared for a mission and life of service! 10/10 recommend!
He is very helpful and impactful when learning about how to serve and prepare for a mission.
I loved brother howell's mission prep class. It had so much amazing resources for me to use while i prepare to serve a mission. He gives many assignments, but they are so easy and very reflective and rewarding. I think I will 100% be better prepared for my mission because of this class!
This class was not hard and Brother Howell was awesome. You do a lot of assignments outside of class but they aren't hard. As long as you go to class and read your Preach My Gospel you will be fine.
Brother Howell is the best. This class is super fun but also helpful for preparing for a mission. There is a decent amount of out of class work.
He is the goat
Professor Howell is great at teaching course material, however, his classes are a little homework heavy so be prepared for assignments every week. I really enjoyed how he teaches the subject with passion and shows sincere care for his students.
He was an awesome professor and was an amazing person I learned so much from him!
The class has a high workload but if you're truly trying to get the most out of it then it will be very rewarding. There are no tests, just attendance and a ton of assignments. Brother Howell is guided by the spirit and I would 100% take his class again.
Brother Howell teaches you how to become the kind of missionary the Lord needs. Confident in the doctrine, and genuinely loving toward every person you meet. I leave every week more excited, more prepared, and way more in love with the Savior and His work. If you get Brother Howell for mission prep, you've basically won the lottery.
This professor was very spiritual and helpful when I had issues, but I thought the professor made the class too work heavy.
I was always excited to go to his class. There is a decent amount of work, but the work is easy, spiritually uplifting, and very helpful in preparing you for a mission.
Great guy and professor, the class isn't hard but there is a good amount of homework and readings.
The professor has put alot of time and effort into perfecting this course and it shows! The lectures are super engaging and I can relate all of the concepts he teaches to myself. Highly reccomend!
Be aware. An A is an extremely high percentage
This class was awesome! Every week, assignments are due at the same time, so as long as you're doing them, it's easy!
He was fun to listen to in lectures. To some people it might seem like a lot of homework but it's manageable. He had a lot of good insight, including tagging Christlike Attribute scriptures in the Gospel Library which I intend to use on and after the mission.
Brother Howell is the best! The class is very low - stress with no midterms.
Hands down, one of my favorite professors is super nice and cares for all his students
I really enjoyed this class and thought it was great for preparing for a mission. It is a decent amount of homework mostly on annotating PMG, but it isn't anything super hard. Overall, I really enjoyed this class and am excited to be able to translate it into my mission.
i really liked his teaching style but it was a little hard to always get the attendance code at the start of class sometimes. other than that i absolutely loved taking this class and i learned so much
Before I took this class, I didn't know a lot about the life of a missionary, and I didn't really have a plan for serving a mission. But Brother Howell definitely changed my thoughts to really let me think about going on a mission in the future. The work for this class is a little bit more than I thought, but I enjoyed every time.
Prof. Howell is a really nice guy, and I can tell that he cares about this subject. However, most of the work feels like busywork rather than anything meaningful, and there is a lot of it.
The class overall was actually nice to learn about, but it was a lot of busy work, which felt unnecessary. Also, the teacher felt like there was only one right answer, and you couldn't have any differing opinions. Nice teacher, just some days I did not want to be there and was extremely bored.
Brother Howell was a great mission prep teacher and I feel better prepared going into my mission. We read Preach my Gospel every week and had a good amount of busy work, but it seemed helpful. I would recommend this class if you're considering serving a mission of any kind!
I loved Brother Howell! He was an amazing teacher and I loved this class! I would definitely take this again!
I love him! He is so awesome and after his class I feel so prepared for my mission!
I like how he teaches. He has a slideshow for every class and an in-class reflection to accompany it to make sure that you are paying attention. This format helped me learn effectively and be more engaged
Best mission preparation I've ever done! He has You doing many different kinds of assignments but they are all so helpful and meaningful.
Loved Brother Howell. Mission prep class was a highlight of the semester! He has a genuine care for his students, and his testimony is powerful. He also focuses on a lot of practical aspects of missionary work I didn't know, not just the spiritual. He does assign some busy work, including annotating all of PMG, but it's throughout the semester.
Brother Howell is a great professor and this class truly helped me feel more prepared to serve my mission. You read preach my gospel almost every week so you become pretty familiar with the content.
I loved having a class from Brother Howell, he was someone that was very personable even outside of class. For my first religion class at BYU it was a great experience especially with no tests, the class was very easy, and it felt like I could focus more on the spiritual aspect of the class rather than the academic aspect.
Brother Howell is the best teacher at BYU! He cares so deeply and is passionate about missionary work. His class changed my life and helped me become a better person and disciple of christ. If you are going to take mission prep, take it from him!
Good professor!
Professor Howell is amazing!! I highly recommend him, I loved how we talked about all the different ways you can share the gospel with others. He is a caring person and you can tell he LOVES what he teaches. There are multiple assignments a week, they're not difficult they just can take some time so it is important to stay on top of everything.
Professor Howell is a pretty good professor! The course has a lot of busywork, but other than that, this course was pretty enjoyable.
Professor Howell is an amazing teacher. I loved his mission prep class. All of his assignments are helpful to prepare and have a point. His grading is super clear. He has helped me grow my testimony so much, and got me excited to serve a mission. I highly recommend this class. No mid terms, only assignments. we read from PMG and AML.
Brother Howell definitely cares about his students. He is an amazing mission prep teacher and has helped me better prepare for a mission. The assignment were never really "assignments" but rather a check in to keep you on track for your mission prep (all things you should have been doing but having it be graded actually made me do it). LOVE HIM!
Professor Howells' curriculum and lessons convinced me to serve a mission. He is a very kind, considerate, energetic, and hilarious teacher who absolutely makes the class engaging and worthwhile for his students. The class has a pretty solid amount of work, but is going to be the easiest course to get an A on, so long as you do things on time.
He gives good lectures and the homework is very manageable. Assignments are due at 10:30 at night but are normally only 15-30 minutes long.
I loved professor Howell's class! Sometimes his assignments felt like busy work, but once you get out in the mission field you'll be thankful you took his class! He knows much missionary work and has a deep love for his students. He is funny, light hearted, and passionate. I learned a lot about missionary work from his lectures and guest speakers!
SO grateful I took this class from him!! The PMG readings are sometimes tough to do but I know it will help me out in the mission field. He made me so much better prepared and excited to serve a mission! I don't think any of it was busy work. He also brings in past/present missionaries and it's nice to hear their experiences too!!
It was really helpful to prepare for my mission, and is really easy if you keep up with the reading. you have to read the whole PMG but it is really useful and learned a lot.
I loved Professor Howell! I learned so much in this class and it honestly wasn't hard at all. You only have a couple assignments each week and they prepared me so much for my mission. I think everyone should take this class if they are thinking about a mission!
Professor Howell is a great teacher. This class is pretty easy all of the assignments are on canvas. There's usually homework every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. It's an easy A as long as you go to class and do the homework's. The homework's are not very hard.
Recently served as a mission president and currently a branch president in the Provo MTC, so very up to date on mission standards and best practices. Assignments are simple and on consistent schedule. Does great job of actually preparing you for a mission. I regret taking the once a week night class as it was mostly flex kids who didn't participate
I absolutely loved Brother Howell's class! He is so caring and really wants the best for all his students! I would 100% take his class again! I absolutely loved how his lessons were set up each day. He is a really easy grader and really wants all his. students to be the best missionaries they can be! He is just the best!
Scott Howell is a phenomenal teacher, human being, and Disciple of Jesus Christ. He loves us and loves our Savior so much! If you are taking a missionary prep class, you've GOT to take from him. He has made me so excited to go and serve in Dallas Texas East in 41 days!
He was very engaging and the assignments weren't very hard. Going to class matters but it is worth it to go!
Brother Howell was great! He is super nice and caring. He is also great at putting people into students into some on-the-spot situations that will definitely help people in the mission field.
Instead of teaching to help understand the doctrine and missionary work, Brother Howell focused the entire class on filling out the class review on canvas. There were no deep conversations about the gospel and roles as missionaries in the church. A lot of the learning that you will do is outside of class as you read preach my gospel.
Great guy, mission prep class felt useless
I loved taking Mission Prep from Brother Howell! He was so kind and caring. He truly wants us all to be the best missionaries we can be. The courseload was about right for a 2-credit religion class, and all of the homework had the clear purpose of helping us become better prepared for our mission. Would take again in a heartbeat!
I loved this class; it was my favorite class this semester. Brother Howell tells you how long each assignment will take. I feel very prepared for my mission. Don't be late to class or turn stuff in late because there is a late penalty. I clicked yes for the textbook because you need a physical Preach My Gospel and Adjusting to missionary life.
Great class! Lots of reading, but I loved the professor!
He is such a wonderful man, and all the homework was stuff I should have been doing to prepare for the mission anyway! I felt so uplifted after every class.
He is the best teacher I have ever had. I always left his class feeling inspired and he has such a love for missionaries and missionary work.
Brother Howell is an awesome professor who truly cares about your education. This course has definitely helped me further my understanding of the Gospel and has influenced my preparation for serving a mission.
He is so amazing!! He genuinely cares about all his students and wants everyone to succeed. The material is really light, there's a little homework due Monday night, PMG due on Tuesday, and a video to watch on Thursday.
Prof Howell's class was the best! There were weekly PMG readings and videos with one big(ish) assignment a week. Not hard at all, a lot of it was self graded, and actually beneficial for future missionaries! Loved the lectures!
Brother Howell has such a genuine love for all of his students. He wants to see them all go out into the world and make it a better place. He is very down-to-earth, humble, and fun. The homework assignments were all engaging and beneficial. His life experience is perfect for what he teaches.
valuable to the human race and is a loving and caring nice fellow.
Brother Howell was amazing!! He made me so excited to serve a mission and I learned about so many helpful resources in his class. There are a lot of assignments, but none feel like busy work. I can see how each of them taught me important information for being a missionary and a disciple of Christ.
Professor Howell is the best! His class is fun and low-stress and I never had to worry about it. As long as you stay on top of readings and the small assignments, you will do great! Attendance is part of your grade so it is mandatory but class is fun. Easy class to get an A in!
Very nice guy who genuinely cares about his students and missionary work. He really wants his class to help people :) The only problem I had was that he was sometimes a little difficult to reach via email, so I would recommend in person communication or utilizing his phone number that he puts out. Additionally, attendance is pretty much mandatory.
Brother Howell was the best mission prep professor! He genuinely cares about each of his students and wants the best for you and prepares you to be the best missionary you can be. I feel so prepared to serve and have nothing negative to say, you should 100% take his class.
Brother Howell is amazing; he made the lessons fun and very inspiring.
While this mission prep course workload is definitely a little heavier than others, I felt like it really helped prepare us to be future missionaries.
He was very helpful in prepping students for their missions. He genuinely cares about his students and makes class very engaging.
Brother Howell loves all his students and wants them to succeed as missionaries. It is a bit work heavy but all the assignments were very easy and there are no tests. All in all pretty easy A!
Professor Howell was truly such a incredible teacher if you are taking mission prep YOU HAVE TO GET HIM!!! His work is so easy very manageable, and his classes are SOOOO engaging he always has something so amazing to teach or show in class lots of guest speakers which are my favorite! Learned such incredible things for my mission!
Brother Howell was such a good professor to learn from while getting ready for my mission! We did have homework every class, but it was all very easy and straightforward. It is very clear that he loves the Lord, the gospel, and every missionary. He loves teaching this class!
Brother Howell was a great professor. I feel so prepared to serve my mission after taking this class. He's been very involved in the missionary world so he knows what he's talking about. There's usually 5-6 assignments per week but nothing too challenging.
He really does prepare you for all things about missions which was great. However, he didn't take a lot of interest in getting to know the students and his online canvas section was messy and all over the place. Get ready to read and annotate all of Preach My Gospel by the end of the semester. Overall, not a bad class.
Brother Howell is an amazing Mission prep teacher! he genuinely cares about his students and wants us to succeed. The class really helped me to prepare for my mission. Also it is a super easy class as long as you show up to class, read your PMG, and do the easy online assignments. there are No tests! Take Mission prep from Bro. Howell!!
Brother Howell is truly one of the best. He teaches with such happiness and light, and I would definitely take his class again. Mission prep helped me so much in preparing for my mission and I'm so glad I took it!
I feel so prepared for a mission after taking this course!! Brother Howell is GREAT! He is very kind and eager to answer any questions if you talk to him after class. There is quite a bit of homework, but it isn't challenging and is straightforward. I would 100% recommend whether you're trying to decide if you want to serve or already have a call!
This class was awesome!! All you have to do is the assignments and show up to class. The assignments are a decent amount of reading because you have to read Preach My Gospel and Adjusting to Missionary Life, but all that is part of preparing to serve a Mission. A piece of advice, don't push off the reports until the end of the semester.
he made very clear the amount of time different assignments would take and what was expected which was really helpful
Brother Howell's a great teacher and the Spirit is always in his class.
I thought that Professor Howell's mission prep class (REL 130) was a great way to prepare for my mission. This class helped expose me to important materials like Preach My Gospel, Adjusting to Missionary Life, as well as Church websites and apps. This class was really easy and just required some reading outside of class.
I love Brother Howell! This class really helped me see what serving a mission would be like. It is a lot of PMG reading and things like that but if you keep up with it it isn't bad. It is also a lot on your honor if you did the assignments or not. No tests or anything, a few group zooms. Overall an easy and great class!
He is a wonderful teacher who really does care about what and who he is teaching. He made me not just prepared, but excited to serve a mission, and taught me a lot about what it means to be the best kind of member of the church you can be. Luv ya.
Professor Howell is probably the best mission prep teacher at BYU. He doesn't give busy work and the assignments will help you develop skills for the mission. But stay on top of due dates because he doesn't always make them clear.
Brother Howell is easily one of the top three most spiritually motivated people I have had the pleasure to meet in person. I cannot recommend this class enough.
Brother Howell is an amazing teacher. He truly cares about each one of his students. I also feel so much more prepared to serve my mission. The resources and tips he gives us and we learn about are extremely helpful. There's no tests, and consistent assignments every week so nothing is a surprise. Amazing class!
He's not everyone's cup of tea but he was a good professor imo
This professor is great; one of my favorite religion classes I have taken is Mission prep, and I am not going on a mission. Class is engaging, and he is very funny, not a ton of homework assigned, just some reading that will put you in good habits and readying/ learning things you will actually use outside of class.
Professor Howell is an amazing professor! The class didn't have many assignments, just reading from PMG, AML, and a weekly assignment due on Mondays. He truly cared for everyone in the class and helped prepare you for the mission!
I LOVED taking mission prep with brother Howell! Even if you don't have a desire or are unsure about serving a mission I would still recommend taking the class. Brother Howell is so good about inviting the spirit into class and I always left class feeling good. Its an easy A as long as you complete the assignments.
I love Br. Howell! He is very knowledgeable about missions and he gave a lot of great insight. It is a great class to help prepare for your mission! He cares about all his students deeply. Sometimes the class feels a little bit like busy work but it's super easy. I feel confident that I can go out on a mission prepared now!
Howell was 100% the best teacher Ive had in my entire life! I left every lecture feeling inspired and full of joy. I would often feel the spirit. If you have the opportunity to take mission prep with him do it! I hope to take a class with him again in the future or be a TA for him. I am going to miss this class so much.
I loved Brother Howell's class!! He always brought so much energy and joy with him! I learned so much and feel so much more prepared for my mission. There was more homework than I expected, but overall it wasn't too bad.
Brother Howell is funny and educated about missions. Homework can take a bit of time, but it was all helpful and meaningful. If you're unsure about serving a mission, this class is helpful in learning more about missionary life, rules, and lessons.
Scott Howell is an amazing teacher to take Mission Prep from. He has been a mission president once and is now a branch president at the MTC so he knows a lot about missionaries and how to help you succeed. He cares a lot about us. Lectures can be a little random but always good. No tests BUT TONS OF HOMEWORK. things due at wierd times in the week.
Brother Howell is so awesome! You can tell he really loves his students and wants us to succeed. His class is fun and light-hearted, and is full of knowledge and content. This course isn't difficult, but I will say that he has quite a bit of homework that's due throughout the week, but if you are good at staying on top of things, then it is easy!
I could tell that he really cared about every student in the class. There were no tests and most of the homework was self graded.
Most of your grade is from the readings in PMG and AML, and they are extremely reasonable. Your scripture library will become so useful if you mark and tag the scriptures as laid out in the assignments. One of the nicest and most understanding professors on campus.
Great caring teacher, but a lot of coursework.
Brother Howell is an amazing professor. You can tell he really cares about all his students. He keeps the class fun and entertaining, but I also still learned a lot from this class.
Brother Howell is a great teacher. Could really feel the impact from his classes. Feel more ready than ever to go on my mission.
Brother Howell is a great teacher! He's super caring and I enjoyed his class. There is a lot of reading and annotating but it's manageable if you stay on top of it.
Professor Howell loves when people talk in class. He also cracks some jokes, so he is quite endearing to have as a professor. He's always wanting to make sure everyone understands the material, and he absolutely loves when people share their talents to the class.
I LOVED this class! Brother Howell is the best! He really helps you to feel so prepared for your mission! The work is very manageable and all useful for a mission!!
He's awesome!! Very genuine and he cares!
Bro Howell is the kindest guy. He has a joy about missionaries os like no other. I have learned a lot from this class. Yeah it feels like a lot of reading at times from PMG, AML, and scriptures, but also if you are taking Mission Prep at BYU then you are at thinking about a mission, therefore you will be doing all of this anyway.
There were a lot of readings from Preach My Gospel but he did a really good job at spacing them out so it didn't feel too overwhelming. He doesn't cover things from the readings in class so make sure to do all the outside assignments! I learned a lot of practical knowledge and it didn't feel like he was just giving us busy work.
This class was awesome, specifically because Scott Howell is amazing. He and the class itself are very spiritual. You get a lot of "homework", but the homework is just preach my gospel study or watching videos. It truly prepares you for the mission, despite it seeming like "busy work" on the surface. Also, no tests or exams is a huge bonus.
I LOVE BROTHER HOWELL. If you are looking for the best way to prep for a mission take a class from him. He has busy work for sure but in the end I'm grateful for every assignment I did.
I loved him, and I definitely feel more prepared to go on my mission! I would 100% take him again if I could! He's engaging, funny, spiritual, knows what he's talking about, and just great!
He is an amazing teacher! He really prepared me to go out and serve the lord!
Brother Howell is a fantastic teacher!! He has so much experience with missionaries and has clearly spent a lot of time figuring out the best way to prepare future missionaries. His assignments are clear and easy to keep up with and grading is fair. Attendance is required, and each class is so great! He loves his students and is a joy to work with!
I love this class, it was my favorite religion class of the semester. If you are thinking about a mission, I highly recommend this teacher. He really knows how missions work, and shows that he cares for his students.
Scott Howell is the NICEST guy I have ever met. He cares so much about his students and really loves everyone he teaches. he has prepared me to serve and I am so thankful for him.
I loved mission prep with Brother Howell! I would definitely recommend him to anyone!
Good Class
Professor Howell loves his job and you can tell. This class was so uplifting and taught so many helfpul missionary tools.
Mission Prep was an amazing class and Professor Howell teaches it in a great way. He definitely knows what he is talking about and has so many resources available to bring on a mission. I feel way more prepared to serve after taking this class.
If you are going on a mission, TAKE THIS CLASS!!! This class was so helpful and had me so much more confident going on a mission. There is no busy work and every assignment and reading is relevant and helpful to you going on a mission. Brother Howell is so kind and loves his job. I learned so much that is so helpful!
Brother Howell was a great teacher and a very great guy. His class has you annotate all of Preach My Gospel, which was a little time consuming at times but not too bad. He does a good job of exposing you to tons of materials that will be useful on your mission as well as showing how they are important. Would take again.
I love Professor Howell!! He was extremely passionate about missions and has made me so excited to serve a mission. You can also tell how much he genuinely cares about all of his students and wants each of them to be the best missionaries possible. There is a lot of in-depth work in Preach My Gospel, but that is so worth it. I love this class!
Very high energy professor, which was daunting as an introverted person. Really gets you out of your shell in anticipation of missionary work though.
He is the best if your taking mission prep take it with him
Brother Howell is the best! He is so inspiring and wants everyone to be fully prepared to serve missions. He is so happy all the time and his class is a great environment to be in. The only downside is there's a good amount of busywork but it will help you out on your mission if you plan to serve one! Take brother Howell's class!
Brother Howell was one of my favorite professors this semester! This class was pretty easy and I think if you got a bad grade it's your own fault. His class was super helpful and I am positive that all the assignments we did are going to be so nice on the mission. You can just feel how much he truly loves all his students in this class.
Genuinely such a kind and understanding Professor, he's really open to questions and helping you out with any questions you have about the course.
Very easy class. Just do all your assignments and go to class. He is very kind and caring and will help you a lot to prepare for a mission.
Brother Howell is the best! He is not old fashioned because he focuses a lot on how missionaries can use technology to share the gospel. He knows lots of incredible resources and is very aware of the struggles of mission work because of his experience as a mission president. It has helped me prepare more for my mission and he'll help you too!
Brother Howell was a great mission prep teacher! I can tell that he really cares about his students and wants to help them be great missionaries. He has so much great insight that will be useful on the mission. The course is not very hard, but you will have to dedicate some time to it and there are assignments every week.
He's a great professor. Attend and complete in class reflections, and complete your assignments, and your grade will be fine. This class is what you make it.
Brother Howell was a great Mission Prep teacher! He had great insight and his love for missionary work is infectious!
Bro. Howell really cares. His wife is awesome too, she teaches a lecture. I think this is a great class for prospective missionaries. He had recent converts in his classes talk to the class whenever he could which was sweet. Homework only took 2-3 hours per week. It motivated me to study PMG which was great. No exams or papers.
Awesome guy, he really cares and does everything based on feedback he got from missionaries from his class.
An amazing teacher! Super engaging and organized. ZERO! tests! but impactful assignments that will be helpful in the mission field.
Pretty good teacher. Much more work than I was expecting for a mission prep class, but lots of it seems like valid stuff to be learning/reading in order to prepare. Some assignments felt unnecessary or like busy work, though. Oftentimes felt like a lecture class, and I think it could've been more interactive.
love this class and teacher
Super nice teacher, he really loves the students. Lot's of work though. Late work is heavily penalized. You cannot skip class because the attendance is so heavily weighted.
Professor Howell cares a lot about his students and makes it easy to get an A. His classes are lecture-based with several easy online assignments. His lectures introduce so many new resources that I can use in the future as a missionary, and I also like that he brought in guest speakers!
Bro Howell is great, chill older guy that really prepares you for your mission.
Professor Howell is great at inviting the Spirit. His lectures are always about how to become a better missionary, and he teaches a lot about how to spread the gospel online as a missionary.
This was the best class to take, especially as I was preparing to go on a mission. I learned so much about the gospel and mission preparation, and I now feel completely prepared to enter the field. Brother Howell is a super great teacher and I would definitely recommend taking his class!
Brother Howell is awesome! I would take this class over and over. It's such a good preparation for your mission. The assignments you do now will save you time in the MTC. He helps you learn how to teach lessons and how to use PMG (which you will read all of). Highly recommend!
Professor Howell was very caring about all of us! This class helped me get excited and ready for my mission!!
He is fine. The class is not hard. Just do the assignments when they are assigned.
Very well structured and paced class, good at preparing for your mission.
Brother Howell is such a wonderful professor. He has a strong testimony and is also an excellent teacher. His class is very engaging, and he often invites different speakers to share their conversion stories and past experiences. If you plan to serve a mission, this is a great class to take. It's also one of the easiest religion classes at BYU.
He was super nice, and I felt like he was really good at trying to prepare you for a mission. Lots of scriptures and reading through preach my gospel
Brother Howell is an amazing mission prep teacher! He always brings the Spirit into each class. He has really helped to increase my desire and excitement to serve a mission. There is a bit of reading, but it is all worth it. He has helped me to feel more confident and prepared to serve.
I loved Brother Howell. This class really helped me feel prepared for my mission, more than I thought a class like this could.
Sometimes gives a little bit of busy work but nothing too bad
You'll feel so much more prepared tfor your mission than you were before you have take Brother Howell's class!!!
His lectures in each class are beneficial and inspiring!
great teacher!!
Professor Howell is a fantastic teacher! He made mission prep my favorite class this semester. He brings a fun energy to his class, and he truly loves and cares about his students. There is a decent amount of work, but it's all going to be quite helpful for the mission. He pushes us to be amazing missionaries. Highly recommend him as a teacher!
He teaches the material very well, if you get the work done on time you'll do great in this class. I turned in some assignments late and that's why my grade went down a bit but otherwise everything was good.
Kind of a lot of work for a 2 credit but it's good mission prep material.
Brother Howell is an amazing teacher! You can tell he cares a lot about what he teaches and is very knowledgeable on the subject. I can guarantee that you will learn something new in his class. There is a large amount of weekly homework, but it is on a set schedule so the homework is easy to anticipate and is rarely surprising.
Great class! Brother Howell cares about his students. He always made sure we were taken care of. We became familiar with a lot of campus resources which helped me a lot over my first semester of college. I loved attending the devotionals.
