One of the best!!
Excellent professor.
Scott is the best CIS teacher I had. He's super smart and an awesome teacher!!
One of the best profs in the CS/CIS dept.
He is the best CS teacher at the university and his classes are generally enjoyable.
Great teacher. His tests are realistic, instead of going for the little details that we dont need to know anyway, and he is always helpful when there are questions about programing.
The best professor SVSU CIS/CS Dept ever has had. Really helpful and very smart. Knows what he is talking about. I would love to have more classess with him. Thanks Scott for being there.
He TEACHES WITH CLARITY, GETS TO THE POINT, AND HELPS OUT ANYTIME unlike other CS teachers who ramble on, or try to be tough, with no objectives. We could learn online, or from books, but this guy WILL TEACH YOU YOUR MONEYS WORTH PERIOD.
if Scott James teaches any class, take it whether its required or not. you'll learn a ton and deffinately get your moneys worth. Its even worth delaying graduation in order to take a James class instead of one of the other professors, IMHO.
I've taken about 4 classes with this guy, and I intend on taking a few more. We actually learn real-life stuff. He doesn't just read out of the book. He assigns projects that are worth our time to do since they are reusable in the real world. A+++++++
I've had Professor James for a few classes and he's the best one that I've had BY FAR. This guy is so helpful and makes classes fun. I highly recommend him. I wish I could've had him for everyone of my classes!
If you want easy, he is the man. I personally can get more reading a book.
One of the best professors I've had. I've now graduated and have a job in the field applying what he taught us. One of the most intelligent persons I've run into. You won't be sorry by taking one of his classes.
I graduated from SVSU in 2003 and Prof. James was by far my favorite teacher throughout my time there. He's such a smart man and I always learned more then just syntax from him. His classes are difficult enough but he is a pretty easy grader if you get y
Best Prof @ SVSU
Amazing prof. with alot of industry experiance which is reflected in the course work.
Great professor in my life
The best professor at CSIS department in SVSU. I found a job in the industry after I graduated and I am using 95% of everything that he's taught me. If I could take all CS and CIS classes with him I would. There is no poing ot having a CSIS department at SVSU if he leaves knowing the level of the rest of the guys compared to his. He's the man!
Best prof in either CS/CIS departments. Very knowledgeable a great teacher. Learn a lot about networking but be ready for a lot of work.
Dr. James is probably the most intelligent and interesting people I think i've ever met. Its an honor just to be taught by him. No need for text books, he pretty much can write his own.
Professor James is SVSU's best CS/CIS teacher. If you have a chance to take him or another professor, choose him. He has "required" books but they are not needed. He is the man.
Best in the CS/CIS dept. hands down.
His tests are hard on the hands but its worth the arthritis you'll develop later.
Best CIS/CS professor there is. Take all of his classes that you can you will learn a lot from him.
Take every class you can with Dr. James. Very knowledgeable and a great teacher. You will learn a ton.
Dr. James, hands down, the best teacher in the department. Always willing to help - take every class you can with him. All tests are essay but if you show you know the info he gives you credit. Also, don't buy any books, you wont need them - he uses his open through power point and Word docs.
Best instructor in the department by far! Real world experience, knows the content inside and out. Very clear and organized content.
Best instructor in the department by far! Real world experience, knows the content inside and out. Very clear and organized content. Great preparation for CIS 422
Dr.James is one of the BEST professor you'll ever have in your academic career. He will teach you from the real world prespective, theory as well as practical. Take any CIS class the you can and you'll not regret. You'll learn a tons of stuff. I wish i can have in for my Grad. School.
He is by far one of the best professors in the department, if not the best. He is clear about what he wants you to do and expects you to do high quality work. Wish I would have had him for every class.
Great teacher, great man. Make's SVSU worth it.
Great teacher, great guy. SVSU sucks and I never would of went there if it wasn't for this one teacher.
Best professor that I had in college! So knowledgeable and helpful. Be prepared to work hard. You will learn lots and all of it applies!
Took and Independent study course with him. On the syllabus he sent to me he never put his grading scale on there. SVSU's standard grading scale is 93%+ is an A. Dr. James requires a 95% for an A and I had no knowledge of this scale until my final grade was posted on my transcript. I missed a 95% by 2 total points and ended with a 94.6%.
I took James for the first half of the senior capstone and it was amazing. The guy knows his stuff. I wasn't really sure why I took this major when I had to get through all the programming. I now know what I want to do for my career and I feel very prepared becuase of him. Best prof I had at SVSU
Took 486 at the same time as 422 -- the prof is amazing. I learned things about databases that I didn't even know could be done. The semester project is long and tough, but you get so much out of it. I think about coding completly different now. Thanks Dr. James for another great class!
i'm back in James' classes this semester and just like last semester, he's awesome. Great lectures, good organization. Get ready to learn. i wish more professors in the department could be like him. Best prof i had the whole time i've been at SVSU. Take his classes, work hard and prepare to learn alot. i wish i'd had all my classes with him!
Have never had this professor before. Wish all profs were this good. Actually feel like I'm getting my money's worth out of his classes. So glad I have sveral more with him!
Good class, just wish the material was more modern.
Best teacher at SVSU and ONE SPICY DISH.
Really enjoyed this class! I thought I knew all about how to build software and stuff and after this class realized I know how to program but not everything else that has to be done. He has a ton of information that he shares from his industry experience. Can't wait for the second half of the class in the winter! Awesome prof!!!!
Dr James is the best professor in CSIS! He knows so much about industry and although some stuff is slightly outdated, you learn so much. He will do so much for you if you put in the work. You will want to cry after exams because they are essay questions but nonetheless they aren't too difficult, just a lot of writing. Go to class! Pop quizzes!
The best programming course I have taken at SVSU yet! James' examples were so good and I learned a ton. We had a textbook, but he wrote like 700 pages of detailed notes and code. I will take him for every class I can -- wish he taught them all.
Awesome class! Best online class I have taken -- so organized and I always knew what was expected. Wrote own detailed notes that made the homework easy as long as you read the notes and practice what's in them. Greatly enjoyed the class -- just wish he taught CS courses and capstone. Lucky CIS students!
Wrote his own 800page book. I learned tons about .NET and VB. I feel like I really grew in this class -- I wasn't sure I was much of a programmer before. His assignments were tough, but I sure learned alot. Best professor I've ever had at SVSU. Looking forward to many more classes with him. Take for every class you can if you want to learn.
James is the real deal. He's worked in industry, he's taught, he's a hella good programmer. If it wasn't for his classes, I wouldn't have stayed at SVSU. Get ready to work hard in the capstone, but also get ready for an amazing experience. Scott is the man! Best prof in department and probably the university.
It's not that I don't like him as a person, but his lectures are long ramblings, sometimes trailing off into unrelated topics. His lecture notes are like written like his ramblings. I learned more out of class on the material than in, and I did fairly well, but I could not listen to him for too long. Smart guy, though.
I've taken almost every professor in the CSIS department at SVSU, and Scott James is by far the best that I've had. His exams and assignments are focused on understanding. They are challenging, but his students do well anyway because he's such a good professor. His lectures are engaging and his assignments and exams feel satisfying to complete.
Da Real MVP
God I wish James could teach every single class in the department. There's a lot to learn from this man. Everything he teaches is useful and important. Treat his assignments like you're making and selling a product, because giving him low effort work means you'll likely fail. Get serious or switch your major. Best prof. in the CS/IS department.
I've had James for lots of classes in the CIS major and he's the best. If you want to learn and are willing to work hard, you'll walk away learning so much. If you're looking to coast, look elsewhere. He's been in industry and knows what's relevant and what's not. He actually teaches, and teaches you what you're going to need out there.
Excellent professor. Very organized and quick to respond especially in an online class. You do have to work, but you'll learn lots.
James hates the Software industry with a passion and tries to pass that passion on to you. Be prepared to rethink your major while you receive lectures from a holier than thou arrogant old timer who wants you to be just as miserable as he was in his job!
In 421 - don't know what the negative review was about. James is awesome! He's got a lot of industry experience and knows what's important and what's not. There's a lot of people butt hurt because he destroyed their first program. It was on them because he just showed how assumptions are bad when building software.
Took him for capstone. He expects every one of his students to remember every last fact from every class they have taken. If not you're considered a waste of time. Good luck with his homework which tries to "teach you a lesson" by being overly complex, arduous and unnecessarily time consuming
Dr James is the best professor ever. Anyone who attends SVSU should take any class by him. To put it bluntly, this guy knows his things.
I started out not liking this class and the way James teaches but along the way I have realy started to respect him. He does have a lot of knowledge that he passes along and it wasn't until toward the end of the class that I could see how it all fit together. Excellent professor, excellent class. I can say I have learned alot.
Very interesting class! The first I had with Dr. Scott James and I am looking forward to several more. I have him for CIS 311 next semester. He is one of the best professors I have ever head.
Best professor at SVSU! He teaches so many useful things. I just had him for the first half of my capstone classes and again he taught so well! Awesome, awesome, aweseom professor! There are others in the department that should learn from him how to teach
First class where I have felt challenged! Love the programs even though they are tough. A lot of people in here are coasting and not doing well. He wrote like 700 pages of notes and they are very complete. People just don't bother reading them or actual think about the material. Looking forward to more classes with Dr. James.
Dr. James is the best professor at Saginaw Valley. Just finished the capstone and even with the Covid-19 issues, he still delivered an amazing class and an amazing capstone experience. I'm going to miss not having him for any more classes! Best prof ever!
James is the reason to get your degree from SVSU. He is the best prof in the department and is super smart. Without him teaching the capstones, I don't think my degree would have been worthwhile. Take every class of his that you can!
Able to explain anything and takes time during plentiful office hours to speak with students and point them in the right direction. Knows his stuff and uses all original code and lecture notes. Wrote his own book!!! Tough as heck but you'll learn your stuff for sure! Don't miss class and pay attention. Tons of information stuffed into lectures.
Great class, great prof. Wish we used a newer kernel but understand why he did what he did. I learned so much and I feel pretty competent in Linux now. I plan on continuing on with the textbook as he suggested after the class was over. Best prof in the CSIS department. Looking forward to the capstone classes with him.
Dr. James is a wonderful professor and really explains topics in-depth. While at times lectures can be lengthy, they are for your benefit. One of the best professors at this university. This class specifically is a difficult one to grasp and can be quite abstract. Dr. James does a wonderful job of explaining the topics this class covers.
At first I had mixed feelings about him and did not like him at all. But later in the semester and after taking other classes with him I started to understand his teaching methods and actually see what a good professor he is. None of other classes thought me what Dr. James did. He is funny and cares for his students, as well as his field. The best
He and Avishek are the best profs at SVSU. I learned so much in the capstone and about software engineering. Thanks Scott! Take every class you can with him - you won't be sorry!
I learned so much in this class! Yes, I had to work hard and James is a picky grader but it's only because he's trying to make us do better jobs in writing good code. I would recommend him for any class. Wish I had him for all my classes. Great prof and I'm looking forward to more classes with him in the future.
CIS 311 is challenging, not because the programs are hard, but because James wants you to code better. James actually teaches you good practices. These practices may seem annoying at first, but applying them to your everyday code is a lifesaver. Listen to his lectures, ask questions, use office hours, and be active and you will make it through.
James is everything that a capstone teacher should be. He gives good lectures about pertinent information and assigns work that makes sure you understand it. At least for 421, he was not a particularly hard grader. The first assignment is meant to scare you into turning in good work, but in reality he wants you to pass because he wants you in 471.
CIS 311 was a hard class at the beginning but got easier. The layout was odd because you stopped having homework after your first exam two months in. The exams were tough, but that's because James wanted you to know your stuff. He is a caring professor and will help you with scheduling or any other issue you are having.
This is a challenging class. You learn Assembly, which is confusing itself. James explains it clearly but you have to pay attention and ask questions throughout the class. Attendance is optional, but if enough people are absent he will assign a pop quiz (Easy 5 points). You do homework until the halfway through the semester, then its exams only.
My mans expects everyone to be a professional software programmer, dismisses questions he thinks “we should already know” instead of just answering them, and treats his students like trash. He’s better than some of the other professors here but he needs to take some CBD and chill out
James ensures you are prepared for the world before graduating from CSIS. He is tough and thorough. High expectations. You really learn how to be a programmer from his courses, especially CIS311 and Capstone. Start homework when assigned and ask questions! Gives dummy pop quizzes when attendance is low instead of requiring it. Only emails 9-5.
This class is tough, but expands your knowledge on programming dramatically. We had a total of 10 assignments, with a midterm and a final. Messing up on one of the assignments can really screw you in the long run so be mindful of that. This class is very time consuming but doable. I managed it along 3 other programming classes. Time management=key
Professor James is a caring and up front guy. He wants you to succeed however, grading can be over the top. No rubric to follow with lots of points being marked off of small redundant errors. He wants you to do well, but expects you to know everything about other classes taken and can sometimes demean you for not knowing what he asks.
James is the best professor in the department. Other people complained about 311, but James just wants us to be ready for the capstone and industry. People whine about not remembering things from previous classes -- um, isn't that the point of taking classes is to learn (AND REMEMBER) stuff? Homework is time consuming, but you learn so much!!!!
I wish Dr. James taught more CS classes besides the capstones. I loved his classes and learned so much. The capstone classes were tough, but manageable as long as you carved out time for them. I had some group members who didn't really pull their weight, but there's not much James could do about that. Make sure you keep James!
First things first, don't expect your grade to be rounded to the next no matter what, its a non-negotiable for him. Second taking this as spring class means you only have a limited number of assignments, mess up on one or two and your grade is doomed.
Great professor! I learned a lot of things that I am using at my job right now. Wish I could have had him for every class I've taken at SVSU. He is tough and the exams and feasibility study are a lot of work, but worth it. James is great! You won't be sorry taking any of his classes if you actually want to learn something. See you in 424!
He is a very experienced or I can say very talented Professor. Love his teaching style. Nothing more to say about him.
Scott James is the man! I had him for several classes in my degree and he helped me land my job. Very smart, very talented. You work, but it is worth it! Take him for every class you can get him for.
Dr. James is a tough grader but excellent at teaching. His cs 345 class is like drinking from a fire-hose of information that is blasting at you, making it challenging to absorb everything sometimes. However, he's very caring and offers great support when you're struggling. If you're willing to put in the effort, you'll learn a lot from him!
He has a bit of an ego and thinks of himself as a "tough professor." He spends half the class talking about old software projects and doesn't care nearly as much about what he teaches as he does having you engrossed about his past
James is a very good prof! His classes are well though out and we learned a lot of new material that hadn't been seen before. The professor has a background in industry and so he brings in stories from past projects. I really like the way the group capstone projects work and would highly recommend him! Super nice guy who cares!
Great professor - very interestng class with a lot of information. I enjoyed it and look forward to taking his C# class next semester!
The capstone classes are tough, but James does a great job! You work hard but learn alot. Best professors in the department are James and Rahman. Take them for every CS and CIS class you can if you want to learn. James is great to talk to about your resume and he knows a bunch of people who hire SVSU grads.
Really good guy who knows his stuff! I heard about the capstone software engineering project and I was scared to be honest. James does a great job presenting the material and as long as you put the effort in with your group, you'll do fine. I have learned lots and actually use what he's taught at work. He does give quizzes if too many people miss.
Top prof in the CS dept! He is very smart, has industry experience and actually cares that you learn. He's a good lecturer and his stories are interesting. I enjoyed going to class. He helped me get my job as a software engineer. I cannot thank him enough for his effort! He made my CS degree come together. So glad he teaches the capstones.
Best prof in CSIS dept. He is super smart, cares about you learning and wants you to do well. He will meet outside of class and talk about any problems your having, look your resume over and provide career advice. He helped me land my job and I can't say enough good things about him. Thank you Scott for a great experience!
