this is my second class with scott and he's still the best professor in the department. EXTREMELY helpful and layes out exactly what he wants you to know for exams. He makes class interesting and LOVES participation in discussion. GO TO CLASS and you won't need the book

Being that I'm not a philosophy major I thought the class was fairly difficult. The prof was very helpful though and made the material easily understood and interesting. The tests are all essays. Before the tests the essay questions that will be on the tests are given to the class as a study guide. Fun class.

If you have to take a Philosophy class, take it with this guy!! He is so cool, and he wants everyone to understand what he is talking about. Trust me, the class is not that bad, and I never thought I would have passed it with a B. Just make sure you come to class, he is pretty strict on attendance. Oh, and he's pretty hot too!!!!!

Great class! Dr. James is very careful about making sure everyone understands all topics in the course. He's a tough grader, but he's so thorough that the class average on our last test was a 93. I haven't taken a lot of philosophy classes, but I'm pretty sure he is the best. He's so enthusiastic and really gets into it. Not bad to look at either.

TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! as a basic studies, it is one of the most interesting and fun classes i've been to yet at UNCW. He know's not everyone's going to become a philosopher... and his teaching styles are great. I wanted to go to EVERY SINGLE class. He made everything interesting. Awesome teacher. Very enthusiastic about the subject at hand. Took him for PAR 115 and he made the topics easier to understand. I do not know how you could pass that class without going though, because his notes and discussion are very helpful. His emails are hilarious and provide great entertaniment. Never boring. Probably the best teacher I've ever had. You have to attend class for the notes, and he's a harsh grader. That said, you're going to learn, and more so, you're going to want to learn from him. I got an A- from him and worked fairly hard but I learned a lot. Gotta be "mature" enough to deal with language though, but you should.

I took his online class over the summer and he is still by far the best teacher I have ever had. He's so enthusiastic and does an awesome job of explaining everything. He is always available to help and answer any questions. I would highly recommend anyone take him, even if you don't have to take his class.

Scott James is an awesome professor! Attendance is mandatory, but he is so enthusiastic about the topics and there is never a dull moment in class. He covers most of the material in class, but reading the book definitely helps if you need a little more clarity on the ideas.

Scott made a seemingly boring summer online class excellent. His bioethics class is easily manageable, interesting, and not an overload of work. Excellent professor, and would certainly take him for another class in the future if I had the option.

Easily the best professor I have taken at UNCW so far. His classes are always incredibly interesting and even though he does have an attendance policy you don't end up wanting to miss his class. Overall I would say his classes are of medium to hard difficulty but his enthusiasm makes it really easy to learn. Also the readings aren't much.

He is such a great professor and his way of teaching really does help students stay on top of things. Gives out a study guide with prompts/vocab on it before every test and what's on the study guide is word for word on the test. Also go to class, he makes it fun and if you don't go you will miss a good amount of information you need to know.

James scott is an amazing teacher and his lectures feel like five minutes. He is very educated and inspirational and you actually want to listen to him. His test are on the articles you read weekly and he give you a very structured and short study guide. You know exactly what you need to know for the exam. If you listen and read you will get an A.

As a Christian I was hesitant to take ethics because it doesn't align much with what I believe but he made all the different perspectives so interesting. I looked forward to going! Awesome discussions, easy essay tests- you get the prompts before. And lots of extra credit for watching great movies.

I took him for both PAR 215 and 115 and really enjoyed both! He is very passionate and presents the material in a way that is engaging and fun! Both classes have really made me contemplate my own values and way of thinking. The tests are essays, but the potential prompts are given out before so there are no surprises.

TAKE THIS CLASS! You are required to go to class (2 absences but he is understanding) but you will WANT to go to class. He is an amazing lecturer and is very unbiased. The exams are comprised of a few essays but he gives you a list of essays ahead of time and they are word for word. Final is optional if you do well on the first two exams. Best prof

Arguably the best professor I have ever had. I was excited to go to class to hear his cinematic lectures and amazing powerpoints. He is brilliant, hilarious, unbiased and cherishes personal relationships with students. He met with us after class to have some drinks a few times. You will be so glad you had Dr. James (Scott) as a professor.

Dr. J is my favorite professor at UNCW yet! He is hilarious and his powerpoints are top notch. You will WANT to go to class. You probably shouldn't skip though, missing one class can make you miss an entire theory and it's a lot easier to grasp if you were there for the class. Dr. J is an awesome professor! I took this course over the second Summer session, and although it's quite fast paced, I learned a ton of information that I'll hold onto. He's very good at providing feedback on each submitted assignment, and can tell when you aren't fully understanding the concepts. BUT, he will help you to better understand !

Dr. James is by far my favorite professor at UNCW. He is so knowledgable yet so funny at the same time. His lectures really push you to think about life on a bigger scale. There are three exams in total with two essays each exam. It sounds daunting at first but he gives you all the prompts beforehand so there is no reason you couldnt get a 100.

Great professor, but very heavy on assignments. Two 6-page papers along with two 30-minute presentations on the textbook. The "final" was a 20-page paper summarizing the textbook from the class. Every day for class we had to submit one-page essays summarizing the readings.

Awesome teacher. Doesnt even feel like school in his class, it just feels like we are all having a conversation. Makes the material super easy to understand and is clearly connected to real life. If you have the chance, take a class with this professor.

Dr James is a terrific lecturer. His Powerpoints make learning clear and easy. He is abundantly clear what he expects on the exams (you are provided the exam questions before the exams). Dr. James makes the class interesting - I actually took his PAR115 (Ethics) class earlier and I switched my major to PAR because he was so great. Highly recommend.

Bioethics with Dr. James was very thought-provoking. The majority of the tests were essay format, so going to lectures and taking notes on the various ethical views are crucial. The only grades in the class were three tests and a final paper, but hes a fairly generous grader. He is available outside of class and is happy to answer questions.

Do not take if online. Covid-19 tests were horrendous and nothing could have prepared you for the timed portion. Discussion boards were fair. Material was difficult to understand once the lectures were online via Zoom. Good class in person. Bad class online.

All the tests were short long answer but he would give you a study guide of topics beforehand then choose a few from that list for the test. Take him 100%

If you aren't sure if you should take his class, 100% take it. I am so glad I chose bioethics to take care of one my university studies. He is so funny, seriously it lightens up the room. You will not be bored or uninterested. We talked a lot about thought experiments that challenge your morals. Only 3 exams, extra credit available.

He gives a study guide that is identical to the test so as long as you take decent notes you will get an A. This is really a amazing class and opened my mind up to a lot of different perspectives. This guy is amazing. His lectures feel like youre talking with a friend. He is so fascinating and fun. The only downside is that this class is deep. My brain finds it hard to comprehend the theories we discuss. It has nothing to do with him though. He also offered a lot of extra credit on the first exam!!!

Dr. Scott is truly the best professor on campus. He grades on three tests, participation, attendance, and one final paper that is very up to interpretation. He gives test study guides with possible prompts but you do have to study and truly understand to do well on tests. His lectures are SO entertaining and makes me want to be a philosophy major!!

Dr. James is a great prof he makes lectures very interesting and the class is super interactive. Attendance is graded but that can be easy padding for your grade. He does not put in any grades until the semester ends but you will have your test grades and the rest is just attendance. Don't bother reading the book he goes over it all in lectures!

NO HW only 3 article review for the entire semester. Reading everyday but it's not necessary. He will make the argument clear in class with examples. Encourage student to ask question and speak up from different views and aspects without pushing any biases against you. Mandatory attendance but you will love the class and attend willingly(like me).

I highly recommend taking PAR2115 with Dr. James. There are 3 units- abortion, genetic engineering, and active euthanasia. These topics are controversial but he approaches them from the view of philosophers and not his own views. Made me think critically about my own views. Pay attention and take good notes and you'll get an A. Engaging lectures.

Dr. J is easily one of the best philosophy professors I've had. He chooses the topics well and the assignments force you to think deeply about the material. Taking PAR 215 online over the summer was quite a lot of work, so expect to write a lot. Overall, this class was extremely rewarding and I would definitely take another class with Dr. J!

But he made class very interesting and engaging and is very clear what he is looking for on exams. His final is optional if you have a grade you are satisfied with and it is not hard to get a good grade as long as you pay attention.

Dr. James is awesome. If you just want an interesting class to take, he is the man. Even though I am not interested in philosophy he made it interesting. Attendance is mandatory and you don't have to study much if you just pay attention in class. The study guides he provides are the exact same questions for the exams. The textbook is not necessary.

Dr. James was amazing for Bioethics, very thoughtful discussions each class and was subjective when it came to controversial topics. Great lecturer, be ready to pay attention but it is worthwhile. If you are pursuing anything in medicine for undergrad or graduate school, take his class!

I had him for Leadership, and he was my favorite professor by far. Always wanted students to learn and seemed like he truly cared about what information he was giving his students. All lessons were well thought out and meant something important. Assignments are easy and mostly reflecting on yourself and others leadership styles. Hes also hilarious

Great professor, very sincere and funny. You will have to buy ChatGPT Plus for his "ethics bot," but I got by and only had to pay for 2 months of it because I had my card locked when it tried to bill me for the next month and let me use Plus after that for a while, so if you're worried about paying a lot for Plus, try that. Overall, easy class.
