There are some pros to taking class from Mr. Johnson. He will throw out commonly missed questions on exams and there will always be extra time on due dates. However, for a computer class, he has never used the computer to teach. As far as teaching I've learned about Sudan and the War of 1812, not much about computers. Be prepared to teach yourself
Last two are obviously two failing students who are getting back at a good professor. Good passionate professor who explains technology well. Follows the book. Tests are a little hard (which explains the two failing students). Attendance taken. SAM software is tricky, but once you get the hang of it is not too bad.
Maybe its better in other classes, but the class I am attending is a complete mess. I agree with the first two comments, he teaches nothing. I have made an A on every test and assignment by the way. But I had to learn all of the material on my own, and could have been just as productive in an online course.
Great professor. Lectures don't help for the tests even though he goes into more detail than book. Read and take good notes over chapters for tests. Usually has study guides. STUDY. GET 100s ON LABS, you have 5 tries so it's easy and they help a lot! Discussions are easy, labs just take some time but help your grade. Takes attendance. A so far.
Know key terms and acronyms. Mandatory attendance. You will pass if you study vocab and understand how they kind of work. He reads all of his emails so good on him for that. Decent load of homework but not unbearable. Make sure to be on top of online assignments.
must take this class if you self study. Reopens the assignments but doesn't explain how to do them in first place, cuz they are due way in advance before he teaches them. HW requires free softwares but they are either old or never work and he doesn't know about them. teaches history more than networking, very disorganized
To be fair this class isn't a breeze. If you have a basic understanding of how a network should work maybe, but if not then its going to be rough. I'll make a point that he makes a boring subject over network (which honestly has very few interesting topics in my opinion seem engaging. Book is used for homework and lectures, but doesn't use PPT
His lectures are a waste of time, but participation is a part of the grade. He always talks about different things in class and you rarely learn anything subject-based after the lectures. So, you will have to read or watch videos in order to understand the material. HW assignments are not very hard, but can be confusing.
Lectures are for attendance grade problem is he just goes off on personal stories/anecdotes most of the time, and covers vocabs from the book. Weekly lab and assignments/discussions due (which seem pretty unnecessary). He is still nice though. Midterm and final which can be aced if you study and memorize the terms he gives in the review from book.
Attendance is required but class usually gets out early. Tests aren't based on lectures, book only. Test reviews are good. Memorize all the terms on the review and you'll pass them. Homework can be hard and lacking instruction. He's a little harsh on homework grading as well. Overall nice guy and an easy class
His lectures consisted of life stories and very little information pertained to what was going to be on the test. While the lab assignments were pretty straightforward, make sure to get the highest grade possible (you get 5 attempts). Other assignments were graded strictly bc not automated. The tests are made by him and can be worded weirdly...
he makes it hard to make an A but easy for a B. Too many trick questions designed to trip up students. He lectures off of nothing no powerpoints or anything. SAM is the software for homework which is very picky. He is not very helpful and doesnt like to help through email either.. overall doesnt seem like a helpful professor and attendance req!
He is a good professor nice guy test aren't difficult if you read the textbook. He gives you a review sheet with all the things on the exam. His Homework is what makes him a really bad professor. I mean get ready to do the worlds dumbest hw assignments. So pointless and hard to search up he just wants to waste your time.
Professor Johnson seems to really care about his students. He sometimes goes off book but usually it's to stress points about getting into the networking field. Sometimes we watched videos. He has a ton of contract work so he definitely knows his stuff. If you can look up terms in the textbook and live with his goofiness it can be a fun class.
He takes attendance as a grade, yet never talks about anything to do with computers. He talks about politics way more than he should and even said global warming isn't real and scientists lie...
Where to begin, never used a computer or went over how to do the SAM stuff, his lectures are pointless and end up being about extreme right wing politics(nothing wrong w/ being on either side of the political spectrum unless youre an extremist)and random incorrect facts. Exams are poorly written, and doesnt notify you when thing are due.
Prof. Johnson undoubtedly has the knowledge to lecture his classes. The classes are monologues of him explaining key terms and some of his personal anecdotes. Exams are poorly formulated and you need to read the question multiple times to understand what is asked. The essays and SAM assignments help boost the grade back up.
If attendance was not counted, I would have never gone to class. His lectures are very long, boring summaries of the textbook. He writes the tests himself and words the questions/answers in a way that is meant to trick students, which I think is a poor way of testing the material. Read textbook/take notes and do HW well/on time to get an A.
Great professor, His lectures didnt include powerpoints but he explained everything you needed to know quite well. He has a lot of experience and is really nice
Professor Johnson is great because his lectures are very structured. He'll highlight important topics from the book + tell you what'll be on the exam. It's important that you read too though, because it's a lot of info in the class to retain. Clear reviews for the test are given too. If you try at least a little, you'll definitely pass.
This guy so damn boring, his voice is monotone, he does not make the material exciting to learn about. He likes to brag about his past work experience multiple times for no reason when nobody asked. I dreaded having to go to his class every time I had it because I knew it was going to be boring. Don't take class unless you have trouble sleeping.
He has weekly homework's and they are tedious, its all just busy work with mostly no relationship to what he teaches. He goes off topic a lot narrating the same stories over and over again. The speed of lectures is fast and doesn't write much on the board, everything is verbal.
Good guy, okay professor, 3 tests + cumulative final exam, straight from the textbook, no curve, no electronics allowed in classroom, weekly homework assignments, attendance taken as a grade (4%), lectures can be long-winded stories but they do help you understand difficult concepts, provides exam reviews covering 70% of topics on the exam
I was skeptical to take his class because of these reviews, but he actually is a really good teacher. The only thing that bothered me is that when he lectured, he had no PowerPoints or slides to look at, he just spoke. Hes a really nice genuine guy, and he cares about his students. He has study guides with everything you need to know.
YOU MUST READ THE TEXTBOOK. If you want to get an A, READING THE TEXTBOOK is required. If you are interested in getting a B, you do not have to read the textbook. Attendance takes a little bit, but I recommend you to attend the class.
thanks for having 4 exams and the review for every one, I can get an A. He knows a lot of stuffs. Ask questions if you don't understand, he will answer all of them. Every week has at least 2-3 homework but those are just for you to understand the marital better, which save some time for studying exam. Exam are book cture based. No extra credit.
I had to retake his class again because I didn't realize I needed it lol. But the second time around, I got the hang of it. Attendance is mandatory. Do the SAMs and discussion posts. Read the textbook to understand things better. Lecture is boring because he doesn't use visual aids. He's caring though, and wants you to do well in life.
He's a smart individual and definitely knows his material. The problem is, he doesn't use power points and doesn't let you take notes via anything digital. Don't miss any classes. For the Intro class be ready to assignments weekly and computer modules that require extensive use of google if you don't know how to use Microsoft Office apps.
This class is a lot. I took the online version and he really does expect you to read a chapter a week and the chapters are quite long. If you take this class i recommend taking notes on the chapter prior to the lecture and annotating them during the lecture. Its a lot of work and he talks for a long time the entire lecture feels long.
He does nothing to really help his students. He reads the book, and you teach yourself. He is pretty dry, but seems cool. Dont expect him to be much help though. UTA has a lot of mediocre professors, if you are looking to major in info systems I recommend finding a different university.
He was a little boring throughout his lectures but he included a lot of real-life examples to help keep you engaged.
I wish Scott Johnson's online courses were better, his lectures were hard to follow on teams due to no slides. The class is very test heavy at 17.5% per exam, with 4 exams. for a total of 70% of the grade. If you take from Scott Johnson, study up on the term/definition on Quizlet. Make terms/def for everything on his study guide and bold in thebook
This is the easiest class i ever found considering my other subjects. The course is hard but professor made it easy by providing very easy questions in exam. Take this class if you want an easy A.
Do not take him!! He gives no extra credit and no exams will be dropped at the end of the semester. He watches everyone one by one take the exam through lockdown browser. He will reopen the discussion boards and the SAM assignment at the end of the semester which you only get 5 tries in total. Thats the only way you can improve your grade.
His lectures were not engaging. He didn't do much to help his students out. However, he did reopen some assignments at the end of the semester, which was sort of helpful. The tests are a little unorganized, which confused me at times.
I had him for online fall 2020 and he was alright. He weighs heavily on exams and you must read the textbook for anything above a C. He gives good study guides for reviews but I recommend reading the chapters and then finding a quizlet or making one that covers his study guide.
He is okay at best. He does indeed know his content and clearly understands the topics well, however, he cannot portray that knowledge to save his life. Lectures consist of him bragging about how smart he is; emails with him are very passive-aggressive and he talks down to you. Tests are worded confusingly with the intent to confuse students.
This professor is not approachable at all and comes out as very rude when asking for his help. His lectures are so boring and feel eternal mainly because all he does is talk about himself and doesn't actually teach. He also makes the exams very tricky and doesn't let you review the questions you got wrong. Do NOT take him!!!
Dont even bother with him. He expects you to learn everything on your own no type of teaching.
He is so all over the place and his tests are convoluted that they can hurt your grade hard. I had to essentially teach myself the subject while he did not explain anything in lectures and just talked about his own personal experiences. If you value your GPA, do not take
His lectures do not help at all and his study guides just consist of a list of vocabulary words. However, on his tests, many of those vocabulary words you were supposed to study become conceptual questions, while some are tricky vocabulary questions. His assignments have nothing to do with the exams and are there to just waste your time.
Some exam question are lecture based, so might wanna attend them even though they can get off topic. No makeup exams and doesn't drop any lab assignments. Did give a one day grace to makeup missing assignments for 20% penalty. Final exam is 20% of your grade
If you don't mind long lectures with lots of useless information in between, you'll be fine. Work isn't hard. Listen to the lectures because he sneaks a lot of info in that isn't in the book. He also talks about himself A LOT! Lots of trick questions on exams the way they are worded. Just listen to the lectures and study the notes accurately.
Avoid taking his class if you can, has specific projects and gives easier ones to macbook users and harder ones to those with windows (fo labs). So rude and very strong opinionated doesnt really care if you have questions you will always be wrong or dumb.
Professor Johnson lectures throughout his classes and he talks about his pass experiences which relates to his lectures. He is a nice teacher and wants the best for his students. Be ready to read because the book is required and helps with tests. Homework is assigned every week. But the tests are worth more than homework.
Professor Johnson is very enthusiastic to teach about technology. He can get lost on track sometimes, but that just shows how he tries to connect personal stories to the lesson. His attendance is mandatory, (online choice as well), exams were super easy if you read the book. Homework assignments took some time but were graded very lightly.
This prof has a lot of knowledge but gets easily carried away by telling personal stories. Exams come firstly from the lectures so you have to be in person. Exam answer choices are very similar and questions are poorly worded. There are a lot of assignments, but the forums are graded leniently.
Do what you can to avoid taking one of his classes. He talks down to you without realizing, flips the lecture into talking about himself or his 500 past jobs, homework has nothing to do with the lectures, and he isnt even good at lecturing. He just reads off a paper he prints out and cant even give a definition without going on a ton of tangents.
Gives a study guide for the exam, but it feels like it doesn't matter as some questions are worded poorly. If you're lucky he will have meetings over teams so you don't have to sit through this class. HW is also just a lot of busy work.
Hes a great professor, GO TO CLASS! he teaches everything and explains it well. His lectures can seem boring but if you are taking good notes any paying attention it is super doable. Ask questions! he responds fast, clearly read all assignment instructions and youll do great. He had study guides that are amazing, USE THEM!
He can drift off of lectures sometimes cause he gets lost in his stories, but other than that, he knows what he is talking about/lectures are easy to endure. There are a lot of assignments which were very vague, but they are graded lightly, so as long as you try, you usually get all the points. Study the acronyms and you will pass this class!
You can get an A on tests if you read the book and make notes from the book based on his study guides. TBH I learned better from just reading the book than his lectures but to each their own. Mandatory attendance was annoying considering the tangents he goes on. Overall: good professor, emails you back, knows his stuff, easy HW (3 assignments/wk).
Wish he had powerpoints or something to help go along his lectures. His lectures were fine, but he does go on these random tangents every so often, some visuals to help keep us on track would be much appreciated. Also he is very adamant about not wanting you to use your iPad Pro/Laptops in class to take notes.

He's not the worse, you get homework assignments every week you have to complete, but he's definitely someone who likes to hear himself talk and is very full of himself. He never uses slides in his lectures, just constant talking (which at times he's forgetful and repetitive).Take notes in his lectures and read chapter summaries for exams.
Lectures are long, always likes to talk than to listen and be considerate that a student tried. Only one to decide what's difficult and what is not for the assignments rather than changing opinion based on student reviews. Take notes, be a book work and you'll score high.
Lots of tangents and side stories, many repeated multiple times. I started taking notes just of his side stories and filled a whole page with bullet points. His reviews are accurate to his test. Attendance is required and the homework is pretty easy but tedious and time-consuming. He's very annoyed about screens in class and doesn't any use slides.
Lectures are extremely confusing because he often gets off topic and talks himself into circles. Often brings up that there's information on the test that you won't find in the textbook so you really do have to attend every lecture. especially because he WILL NOT try to help you outand he covers a LOT of information each chapter. very hard.
He's not terrible, but he OFTEN goes on random talks about things that have nothing to do with what he's teaching about. There were things that he said would be on the exams that aren't so please be aware of this. He has no extra credit oppurtunities. Overall I don't reccommend taking his class, the homework assignments are super long/confusing.
If you can take someone else, PLEASE do. He WILL TALK YOUR EARS off about random topics or he will go on these talks about himself and how great he is. You have three assignments due at the end of each week and most of the time have unclear directions. You will do fine on the exams if you study his reviews.
Takes attendance. Exams are hard, sometimes conceptual, sometimes vocabulary. Study Quizlets! Lots of homework, it's time consuming but easy grades. Lectures are a beating, talks about God, life stories and unrelated rants. "No electronics in class" required INSY class and he is the only one that teaches it. Study and you'll pass.
I took a five week session from this summer. He does go off topic sometimes but he means well so he can help students. Assignments were graded by the TA, textbook and study guides helped tremendously for exams. Questions straight from the review,textbook. Definitely not a hard class as long as you put in the effort and take the time to study.
I took a 5 week summer course and it was pretty fun. The professor recently changed up the curriculum this summer and had our class test it. The tests were very easy if you come to lectures, as he points out what will be on the exam. The lectures themselves were interesting though they were two hours long. Overall, easy A+ if you are an INSY major
One of the easiest classes for INSY majors. I took his 5-week course during summer. While the professor can go off topic at some points, the professor really does care about his students and respond fast via email. The exam reviews are clear and would point out what is going to be on every exam the class prior. Definitely recommend.
His lectures are very long and boring. He goes off-topic and the study guides he posts are not helpful for the exam for the most part. 50-question exams, no extra credit nor curves. Most of the time you have three assignments per week. He allows no technology therefore be prepared to take notes by hand. Attendance is mandatory and he's strict.
This teacher talks way too much about his several jobs he had and how he basically invented so many things we use now. He talks way too fast and doesn't give us time to write down all of the notes. I would never take him again! Worst professor, he needs to retire now.
I don't think this professor is terrible. He does brag about things he did but that is expected of old people tbh. I find his stories interesting and informative sometimes. His class is exam heavy 70% of the grade is towards exams but if you attend and take notes you will be fine. You have 2 assignments and a discussion every week. Would recommend
This course isn't supposed to be as difficult as he makes it. His exam questions are tricky. Lots of work...2-3 labs, assignments due every Saturday. Exams on paper. Attendance is Mandatory.
Not as bad as a professor as people make him out to be. The assigned HW quizzes are easy and take less than 10 mins, SAM Lab HW were tricky, but if you're technologically capable they are not impossible. Exams can be worded weird but it's all vocab based so it's easy as long as you listen in class and skim through the book's definitions.
Summer 5 week course, really easy work, hw assignments, labs and activity were due everyday but on a 16 week course id imagine they are due per week. His exams are very vocab based and are based on his lectures since he tells you what will be on the exam. He can get off topic sometimes but overall great proffesor with lots of experience.
Really great professor, he is always available outside class, explains the course work really well, he does tend to talk about his life a lot but it usually has something to do with whatever we're learning, gives a grace day to redo any assignment you missed, as for the exams just take notes in class and you should make at least an 80
This has been one of the worst college experiences I have had. The man is an grading nazi. He flags everything. I do not recommend taking classes with him.
Horrid professor. Gives worthless study guides, falsely acuses students of cheating (and ignores their emails afterwards), and incredibly difficult tests I strongly recommend you take another professor's INSY class.
Be careful with taking this class. There is a lot of accusing of cheating in the class when there is not.
This is not a professional class with the structure it needs and there are to many false allegations of cheating. This is the worst class I have had out of my 4 years at uta.
Johnson is quick to accuse students of cheating without evidence, creating a stressful and distrustful environment. Instead of offering support, they seem more focused on policing students. This heartless attitude makes the class feel more like a trap than a learning opportunity.

Simply the worst professor that I've taken during all my years at UTA. He accuses you of cheating without any form of clear evidence and explanation. I would steer clear and advise you to take another professor for ease of mind
Took the online course. It is a self-taught course which is to be expected from it being online. However, I was falsely accused of cheating and reported to the Academic conduct without any explanation. One of the most unpleasant experience I have with this college as to date.
The Professor is hands-off and assigns lot of busy work every week, would not recommend this class if you value your time. Exams have trick questions that you may get wrong if you're not careful. Does provide one day to turn in all missing assignments for full credit, so it's not too bad, just don't let your missing work pile up over the semester.
It was bad...If you have to take this class, there are better. Be ready to get a pile of work each week, exam reviews that don't help you, and exams with questions that don't even make sense half the time. Also don't be surprised if you get falsely reported for cheating. Why make a basics course extremely hard and then don't teach right?
Prof. Johnson was a mid professor. He's very old school and writes on the board to lecture. He says that there is no laptops/IPads allowed but if you sit in the very back row, you'll be fine. He does have like 2-3 assignments due per week but they're pretty simple, just tedious. Tests are okay, just study the study guide and use Quizlet. :)
probably the easiest insy class i've taken so far. he has a lot of bad reviews, but he's actually a great professor. he only writes on the board, but following along isn't that bad and exams are pretty easy. he said electronics are only for the back row, but everyone pretty much uses it anywhere. he also ends class about 20 min early everyday.
AMAZING professor!! By FAR, one of the BEST at UTA. The lectures are information heavy, so get ready to take notes. If you pay attention in the lectures, you will pass easily. There is a review given out to help guide your studies. I took this professor for the following course because of how great he is! He has a lot of field experience.

TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! He is the best! Extremely knowledgeable about all the topics he covers. He wants the best for all his students that want to learn. Pay close attention to the lectures as that is what is covered on the exam. There are fun assignments such as Wireshark that you get to learn how to use and understand.
Took this as an online class and have not had a great time, you need to read the textbook, go through the powerpoint and watch the lectures if you don't have very much prior computer knowledge. Refuses to give extra credit and does not work with students hardly at all. If you have the time and can really put in the work you may do good.
Not sure why he has many bad reviews. Honestly the best and easiest INSY professor so far. Provides a review for each exam. Just show up to class and take notes, you'll be fine. I put minimal effort and got a B+. Overall provided a good balance between assignments. Not too many but not too few. Would take again.

Tenured, constantly brags about himself and how many cheaters he busted, and WILL TAKE HIS TIME TO NICKPICK ON EVERYONE'S RECORDED TEST VIDEO. Do not take lol. Project every week that takes about 2 hours to complete. Discussion and quizes once a week pretty easy but projects are so tidious and difficult. Exams are nothing like the study guides they ask you questions in the most complicated way possible.
I don't know what these crybabies in RMP are crying about. I took professor Johnson's class and his lectures are amazing. He literally gives what will be on the test over his lectures. His lectures are also funny and he gives information on how it relates to real life. The projects every week are insanely easy. Would take him again. 10/10.
I think students complain about the workload because they don't know that the other professors assign the same projects. The assignments using Microsoft Office apps can be time-consuming, and Mr.Johnson doesn't offer help with them. However, you can figure it out on your own. Your success really depends on the effort you put in, just as he says.
Prof. Johnson is a very knowledgeable teacher. His lectures are interesting and he usually gives real life examples. The textbook is required to access the homework so keep that in mind. However the homework in the textbook is kind of outdated. Easy pace for a summer class, BUT he tends to rant and show his political biases in class quite often.
Surprised to see such a low rating. Super easy summer class but lots of homework (fairly easy) because of how short the class is. Wrote notes by hand and studied 15-30 minutes each exam. He's very knowledgeable and if I could go back, I would still take him. He gives a list of what to study for, so I'm not sure how people didn't do well lol...
I'm convinced that he is only caring about his ratings now. Doesn't change the kind of person he was and the permanent negative impact that he caused to numerous prior students. If you're giving a high rating, consider yourself to have been lucky. It's a front.
This class was not too difficult but he does assign a lot of homework, its not hard but the projects are time consuming and he doesn't offer much help with them. He gives a study guide for all the exams but if you want more than a B I would read the textbook too. He often talks about a lot of things that don't really pertain to the class work.
First day of class all he could do is talk about him being a millionaire, and how he's only here to help students. I asked him for help and he refused; I also asked for his office hours and no reply. I legit have no idea why he's even here, just wasting everyone's time. He just wants to brag. Scott also has a serious trauma dumping problem.
Don't take unless you hate yourself. Nobody wants him here, including staff. He needs to retire.
