Does not explain to students, Asked for help and did not get it. Class was boring and people were walking out. Has a I'm smarter than you attitude and isn't afraid to show it. Kept staring at the hot girls in front. never had a teacher this horrible. Didn't use the textbook once, waste of money
Beyond the WORST teacher I have ever had! He's a jerk, does not help at all, and grades based on "his" beliefs and research. doesnt go by the book in anyway and only "his" opinion is right!
I Like him! He is young and FIRED UP! Keeps my attention and I'm sure if it's a legitimate "grown up" request for help you'll get it! :)
Thumbs up on the energy level. Good class :)
I did not like this professor at all. I took his U.S. History class and everything had a liberal bias. He exuded an "I'm-smarter-than-you" attitude and he wasn't very helpful or friendly. The work load is manageable as long as you don't mind writing papers. The mid-term and final are essays, so make sure you study a lot.
don't listen to these other people, this professor was great, but if you're a dumb*** when it comes to academics, don't take this class because it takes real effort to pass. he makes jokes throughout the lecture to keep it from being boring. i'd recommend it.
Despite what a lot of people say, i thoroughly enjoyed this class. The teacher made a sometimes boring subject pretty interesting, and he does tell pretty funny jokes (sometimes). The workload can be hard because it is all essay work, but if you try hard and pay attention, this is a worthwhile class that you will actually get something out of.
He was a great teacher. Entertaining. Even though I didn't have to be in class, he made me want to go to class. It was a fun class. =]
Prof. Keys was a GREAT teacher. He was very enthusiastic about teaching and very sarcastic, which made the class fun and interesting. I'd definitely recommend taking his classes. The work load is pretty intense. He expects a lot and the majority of his work is in essay form. Worth it, though.
I worked extremely hard in this class & got As on all my assignments but he never gives 100%. He grades really unfairly and it is really hard to get a good grade even if you know the material really well
The teacher really loves this subject and is very enthusiastic. There is a lot of homework. You have to read two 400pg books, the textbook-with homework, two online assignments, two midterms, which are two essays each, and the final, which is 4 essays in 2 hours. The essays come from lectures.
I hated history till I took his class. He's really entertaining and you'll never get bored in his class. He makes the material easy to understand.
Professor Keys was great. The class was interesting and entertaining. There was a lot of reading, but it was manageable. Highly recommend this professor.
A lot of work, but well worth it! Discussion board post and lecture every week. Gives you the opportunity to improve your grade by answering questions he has. Great professor!!!!
This class is pretty hard because you're left to interpret events in history and their relation to each other. He was very helpful when I needed help and gave great feedback. I haven't taken a history class that gives an in-depth view of history in an engaging and interesting way that this class does. It's not dry and all about dates and battles.
If you are looking for an easy A for a history class, do not take Mr. Keys. As an online course it requires much more dedication than any other online class. I found it ridiculous to happen to spend more time studying for this class than Microbiology.
Attendance not being mandatory, Keys was a stickler on attendance making the class extremely unenjoyable. He didn't explain anything clearly and I had a terrible time in this class. I won't recommend anyone to take this class. Every paper we did was graded as if it was a English paper.
He lectures so much, and they tend to get uninteresting. He was a very difficult grader. Teachers like him forget they're teaching at community colleges and not at UC's.
Very comical that Mr Keys teaches his history course as if it's a 5 unit course at Yale, when it's a 3 unit course at a sister campus for a community college. Poor grader, makes errors on things turned in online and lectures get extremely played out after the first couple weeks due to the dreaded "death by powerpoint." I would not recommend him.
Try to avoid taking his class. He gives you tons of homework and is never happy with what you turn in. Does not grade fairly. Horrible instructor!!!
Ok I have never considered dropping a class before but I considered dropping this class multiple times. I think he forgets this is a 3 unit course and not a 5 unit course. The grade was made up of 2 tests the final and midterm each worth 200 points. 8-10 page essay and 2 BORING books to read and discuss in class. Overall I did not like this class.
If you love history this is the professor for you as he really knows his stuff and you will digest most of the material. But keep in mind there is a ton of material, power points, 3 hour long midterm and final, along with a very vague assignment called the newspaper which is very time consuming with little assignment criteria as how to construct.
Professor Keys is very knowledgeable and passionate about History. His lectures are amazing ! you wont fall a sleep, I love the way he teaches the class. Homework seems to be a lot but the way he distributed doable. I recommend Professor Keys for History 111 you will learn History.
This was a nice class, however the amount of material used was a little challenging to get through. There are almost 2 12 hour long narrated Power Points, on top of Text book reading, and that is often accompanied by a half hour video. He is very thorough and but he will help if you ask. Tough grader, but good professor.
professor keys is very intelligent, funny and kind. i like him a lot. he has a good heart.
I ignored the negative comments and taken him during Summer 2015. He is very hilarious, nice, passionate about History, and very respectful of his students. He also makes sure that if you'll understand. As long you come to class, and shows effort that you do the work. He will pass you. By far one of my favorite teachers at MSJC.
Professor keys in two words is hilarious and passionate. He is one of the best teachers I've ever had and always made coming to class exciting. His class requires a good amount of effort and he's not lenient on late work but he's so helpful and will give you good feedback. Great teacher and class.
Lots of opportunity for extra credit to make up for the fact that any late work will be annihilated. Otherwise a decent learning experience from a competent scholar. Homework is par the course, you study you pass.
Teaches class based on powerpoint. Pretty good professor, but get ready for work that is worth a bunch. He's also a tough grader, but its college..
Awesome professor! Took him for HIS-111, and I can definitely say that he's a great professor that knows what he's talking about. He admires the subject that he teaches, which only makes his lectures much more enjoyable.
You'll need 2-5 hours a week to sit down and listen to the voice narrated lectures for that weeks topic. You write a discussion board each week on that material. There's a final 6-page essay but you have all semester to work on it so it's really easy. This class is a lot of work but he makes it engaging and I feel I actually learned so much
There are weekly power point lectures that you must watch, but he narrates them and really seems passionate about his subject. I learned so much about history from this class! His discussion board posts are harder than other classes I've taken, but if you take the time to answer them you'll do fine. There is one big paper due at the end of semester
Honestly Mr. Keys is one of the greatest professors I've ever had! I took his 8 week course so the work load was a little lighter but he is so funny and makes learning about something I wasn't passionate about fun! He is personable and talks to the students in a good way and isn't scary or intimidating. Take him and you won't be disappointed!
I love this professor. He knows what he is talking about and helps you will all the material. This is a three credit class and he treats it as if it is a five. You are required to read two books in one semester and be ready to take notes. He is a great teacher just gives too much work.
Professor Scott is an awesome teacher! I learned a lot in his class. I took his online course and I really liked it. You have to watch his narrated power points presentations and answer on the discussion board two questions he asks every week. Also, he gives extra credit assignments. The book was very cheap. The class is not so easy but is worth it
Professor Keys is passionate about what he does. Although His classes are full of lectures from beginning to end and your only graded on a few things . If you want to take a class that you never have to show up to besides your book discussions and the final week this class is for you . I do suggest you talk Keys if you really love history .
Keys is a solid choice for any history class. He really cares more about teaching the material and making it fun and accessible than assigning a ton of busy work. Tests are online and are accompanied by two book discussions and a final paper. Definitely not hard and he gives you a ton of time. I hope he gets a permanent position at MSJC.
I've never learned more from an online class than I have from Mr. Keys' class. His passion for history really pours out of his lectures. I was actually looking forward to the lecture each week, just to continue the story. His class is not easy and his discussion questions are designed to make you think critically about the material. 10/10 !
The online class is as good as actually going. He has narrated lectures and a variety of educational media. This is definitely not a boring course. Be sure to take notes of all films and lectures, you will need them for your discussion boards.
Prof Keys is an amazing instructor. He voice narrates his ppt lectures and they are quite helpful. Take good notes for the discussion boards and exams. His tests are open book, if taking it online, but they are timed. So, do a quick review on notes before taking the exam. His love for History exudes from him. It was really an enjoyable experience
Mr. Keys has some pretty good jokes when going through lectures. I was able to tell that he loves teaching and what he is teaching. Although I didn't get a very high grade, I would take the course again because he expects perfect work and won't give a high grade purely because it was done. He is a great professor and would highly recommend.
I took this class & he is not very good at helping with questions. He gives a lot of reading and lectures are normally a few videos plus him for over an hr. If you ask a question the answers are open-ended. he always asks for more elaboration. one good thing is with more elaboration he gives you a chance to earn more points.
I practically A'ced the class but I missed one assignment, one of the book reviews, I thought it wouldn't affect me I mean I've A'ced all the quizzes, book report(there's two) pretty much I set my self up to pass with an A easily then I forgot to do one of the book reports cause I didn't feel like it and dropped my grade to a C. Class is easy tho.
What do I say about this guy? Best PROF ever! He takes my breath away and moreso, he knows his stuff. His sense of humor is the greatest (cant help but laugh a ton). But what I would like to say is that, he might grade tough but he makes you work for it. Currently at a C. But, I would so take him again. PS. I hope he gets a permanent position.
Very open and is always willing to help you out, easy work as long as you stay on top of it, would definitely recommend him!
For the summer class, lectures are very important, though they weren't boring because he always had jokes to liven them up. There were 3 written assignments to do, I'd just recommend getting them done early that way they're not a nuisance. Quizzes aren't exactly hard but aren't an easy 100%, so reading/notes are important. Great teacher overall!
Great professor. Offers extra credit. Each week, there is a discussion area with a prompt regarding the week's contents. Simple, self-explanatory,and over-all a great course. He creates YouTube videos where he does he hour long lectures (he's not monotonous and tries to make the lecture interactive).
Great professor---I learned a lot and only had to write one essay and do three reading assignments. The quizzes aren't really that hard either as long as you read the book. Plus, this guy is FUNNY. I laughed throughout the entire semester. And he also answers emails within 1-6 minutes---even on a Saturday. Would definitely take him again if I could
Unless you are a history major and want to work really hard for a history class, DON'T TAKE HIM... The quizes' questions are complicated... and for the writing assignments he will be looking for small grammar mistakes... This teacher knows his stuff and his lectures are interesting but he makes students work harder than necessary for a Gen ed class
Professor Keys is a bit picky when it comes to grading but as long as you take his feedback and improve the next time, you should be fine. He is passionate & you do have to work for your grade. Though history wasnt my favorite subject, I found this class to be extremely interesting and genuinely enjoyed the essays we had to read/write about.
whatever you do dont take him. For someone who encourages students to not miss a day in class he doesnt give attendace points. He also doesnt put the powerpoint slides on canvas because he wants students to go to class. He does not give a study guied. The textbook is hard to read and his feedback is bad. Instead of helping he makes u feel dumb.
This is a Prof. who clearly cares about what he teaches, and doesn't stop at just giving basic facts. A highly participatory online class, and I felt myself and my views being challenged the entire time-- which is exactly what you need from a history class. Approachable, grades fair, easy work, easy A. Just write long for discussions. Nice guy!
Great Professor! Youll LEARN 4-sure! Awesome jokes and funny guy-makes lectures super interesting! Don't miss class. 6 Online quizzes based on lectures/txtbook. Lots of READING so be ready! 3 writing assignments and final essay on civil war. Grading: Make an effortPassing the class. No effortBetter luck next time. Thats fair dont you think?
Alot of Discussion board every week it was manageable considering I took three classes and I still manage to pass with an A I would highly recommend this professor his really nice and wants his students to succeed in his class .
The summer class was really easy even though the quiz was tricky he offered 40 points extra credit which gave me a 104 percent in the class. Just go to class and try on the homework assignments and you should be fine.
Research ?'s: Describe, Explain, Assess, Cite! Tons of Reading & MEMORIZE ur Notes, Mid-Term & Final TIMED, LOTS of Videos & Lect. Cram all that in a Disc. Board + Responses +2 PP Proj REQ. 1 pg X-Cred3 pts! He docked pts on main paper IF I did X-Cred, I stopped to keep my 30/30. University level work, For History Majors. He's Picky! 0 Late Wrk!
All 5 tests are based off lectures more than reading/notes. I passed all with 20/30 (D) because I ditched a lot. The first 4 are online but timed & the final was open book. All 4 primary sources passed with a C due to strict requirements. My final project got an A allowing me to pass with a high B. BTW fast grader! Grades always posted same day!
This class was awesome! Youll pass if you do the homework and come to lectures. Tests were a little hard but if you are good and remembering material you wont have a problem. However tests are online which is nice so you can get comfy and relax before taking. Homework was easy and not too much of it! Really good lectures! Super entertaining!
Dont be afraid to ask for help with an assignment, he will gladly help you and is accessible outside the classroom. Pay attention to the reading and lectures, put in effort & youll pass. Hes exact on grading, If your paper deserves an A+ itll get an A+, if your paper deserves a F- itll get an F-. Overall a funny, and dedicated professor!
This professor is definitely passionate about his work. My issue is that he expects you to write a full article every 3 days, all based off information outside of his teaching. You are ultimately your own professor, and he just grades.
I am currently on my second class with Professor Keys and he is by far the best professor Ive had so far. His assignment s are engaging and really help you learn the material. If youre not a history major this class can seem difficult but just try your best and ask for help when you need it youll be fine. He grades everything right away as well
He is consistent with his due dates and lectures. He responds quickly to emails and notifies us when he is not going to be available. We have to write a 2 page summary every week on our lectures that is NOT HARD at all. I love the consistency and how everything is due on sundays. Funny bad dad jokes during lectures as well.
As for online class, each week we wrote a 2 page summary on the two in-depth lectures every Tuesday and Thursday. Lectures are super clear and 1 hour in length. He's super funny and the lectures never seem to get boring, just make sure to stay on top of watching/being there or else you will fall behind. Feedback is also great.
Prof. Keys is a great teacher! Every week there is a discussion board that you need to reply to. As long as your replies are detailed and interact with every source he will give you a good grade. There was a couple of quizzes and a paper. He gives you all the material you need, no hidden stuff. Lectures are short yet cover all the important stuff.
Online (free) textbook and youtube videos serve as the resources every week. Generally 3-8 chapters of reading and 3-8 videos (5-30 minutes, depending) every week. Take notes on these sources and compile a textbox essay-style reflection using quotes/paraphrase from every source. Usually completed class in 1-3 days (4-5hrs/day). Occasional quiz/test
Professor Keys is awesome! I would highly recommend any of his courses. His lectures are great, he is funny, and has a real passion of history. Two source papers were required for his class, and only four quizzes, including the final. For weekly homework, there is a two page summary of two lectures and a reading summary. Very awesome guy!
He is such a great professor and you will enjoy the lectures. He is the definition dad jokes but he's so sweet and passionate about it. The tests aren't easy but they're not hard either. Two papers and he gives you the material so easy. One assignment per week, lecture summary and 5 text questions, super do-able. Great class, highly recommend.
Not a difficult class at all! Just be ready to come up with 5 questions based off the textbook and COMPREHENSIVE lecture summaries. It gets really tedious as the weeks go by, especially with how nit-picky he is about everything. Two primary source papers with no big exams, just quizzes he makes himself.
Prof Scott's lectures are excellent. He has a true passion for the subject and is very insightful. He does an excellent job helping you connect the dots. Work load is pretty light and his reading assignments are very enjoyable.
Professor Keys was a great teacher. He gave out a lot of information in his lectures and was very knowledgeable about the subject matter.
He labels his class as "online anytime", but does zoom lectures Tuesday and Thursday which means lectures aren't available until then. Grades extremely hard on the papers and content quizzes. Rather than focussing on the history aspect(which is also graded wrongfully meticulous)he leaves several grammar comments as if grading as an English class.
Get ready to work EXTRA hard for your grade.Keys makes section quizzes very difficult. Short answer quiz questions must be 4-8 crafted sentences,it will turn into more. He is quite the petty grader. Be ready to read 20+pgs from the big book in addition to articles. He makes you turn in made up questions from the readings and grades those hard too.
I found his assignment material to be very lazy (on his part) and at times tedious. He will have you write a paper every week and write your own quiz questions, rather than making them himself. That said he is a very quick grader, though it can seem to be nit-picky at times. It was truly a love-hate relationship being his student this semester.
Professor Keys gives an incredible amount of homework, but this was because I took his summer course. We had to write 4.5-page minimum summaries along with questions we had to make up ourselves for pop quizzes. So, he basically did nothing while we did ll the work. Besides that, he is a very lenient grader and gives easy A's.
I took his online class in the summer, theres only one homework assignment each week that is 15 questions + summaries (its not hard, i finished each assignment in a day or two) there arent any tests rather than the final at the end of the semester. He also allows improvement on your hw and lets you fix your mistakes. Would def take again
I took his online any time class. His lectures contained a lot of information about the subject, and he included videos to make them more interesting. You have to write a small paper every week on the lecture material so if writing is not your thing this might not be a good class for you. Quizzes are difficult but manageable if you study hard.
He does not know how to grade. He will mark you down 30 points on a 70-point assignment for missing a sentence. 0/10 do not take his class you will have a hard time unless he likes you.
I Loved his class, I would jump at the opportunity to take one of his courses again. He is passionate and clear. He is a very fair grader. You have to like dad jokes.
This is an online anytime course I took. He did optional live meetings twice a week. I preferred this. He is funny and passionate about the lessons which make it fun and easy to learn. If I could have him as all my professors I would. Professor Keys discussions are on point with the lectures and chapters from that week.
He had optional online lectures and uploaded the videos of them to canvas, which you need to watch or be there because his quizzes are straight from them. He's very entertaining even with sensitive topics and makes learning enjoyable. The final projects and midterms are all from reading material so be prepared to read throughout the semester.
Professor Keys is an exceptional lecturer who is well versed in his field, can provide several insightful external recourses, and welcomes discourse in regards to various aspects of social and historical topics. He is very approachable, and if you love dad jokes, he's your guy. I'd take any one of his classes again.
Not many assignments but he is a bit of a tough grader. Just make sure to follow the homework instructions on assignments and you should be fine.
Professor Keys is amazing! I'm a high school student taking a dual-enrollment program, and this class was the perfect difficulty. Whenever I submitted something, he got back to me quickly with clear feedback. He kept his lectures engaging. There is a good deal of writing, so be ready! (My grade is 98.24 right now, I'm almost done with the course)
Easy to get along with, responds almost unbelievably quickly on any day of the week, and is always there to help. Optional lectures but you must go back and watch them if you want any chance at passing the exams, as they pull directly from the lectures. Exams are tough and once every 2 weeks.
Professor Keys had great, funny lectures. Weekly discussion posts based on two live lectures (recorded for those who can't attend). Free textbook, weekly reading assignments. Accepts late work but not without taking points off so avoid doing so. I enjoyed this class but I also love history so if you're not too into it maybe consider other options.
kind of a hard teacher but I remember that he gave me full points instead of half points on an essay I turned in 2 days late because it was just that good. bro was a real one fr
Unless you're a Historian yourself, good luck taking this class. Severely nit picky and explains history in a way only someone with a lot of experience would understand. Makes you write 15 multiple-choice questions to create quizzes and weekly questions aren't allowed to be answered in your own words with how you understood the material.
He is a funny professor when it comes to his lectures but when it comes to how he grades I feel it is very picky. He takes lots of points off of something small and when it comes to the discussion board it feels like I am writing an essay not a discussion and he is very picky with that as well. I don't recommend taking his class.
I loved Keys. He takes time to work with students. Requested a meeting when he saw my grade slipping and helped me raise it. He's charismatic, funny, and teaches the subject well. Not big on history dates, mainly stories. Gives extra credit. Would take again if needed. Oh, and it was accelerated, so hard, but fair.
This class has a lot of reading, videos and lectures (normal for a history class). Hated his testing structure/format- they're based off other student's reading(had to make 15 multiple choice questions for each module) and a lot the question/answers were not clear. Students can still do well. Easy to communicate with.
Prof. Keys is an engaging lecturer but he requires students to write test questions every week based on the readings, which are used in the tests you take. Also, he requires weekly discussion board posts that are literally 5-7 paragraph essays. He wants citations, a clear thesis, supporting paragraphs, etc. More writing than my English class
I liked Professor Keys. He's engaging, seems like he truly does care about your success and work. He's quick to grade and respond as well. Although, it felt like he couldn't give an 100%. I would put so much effort into a discussion for it to have 5 points marked off. Be prepared to write a lot and read. Took the 6 week summer course and I'm glad.
Professor Keys, really was an awesome professor. He truly does care about his students. Made this class easy.
The workload is extreme, and I feel like this professor never gave out full credit, always docking points for nothing. The exams are multiple choice and multiple essay prompts, which he gives low grades on. I feel like he definitely uses AI to grade essays, no way he's writing essay long comments on the assignment within 10 minutes of turning it in
Worst professor ever. Couldn't pay me to take him ever again. Uses chatGPT to grade students. Is NOT understanding if you have family emergencies, but then will delay grading due to his own family emergency. Will nitpick and is a petty grader; on one of my assignments, I got points knocked for things that didn't make sense. Don't take him
Good class, you can tell he cares. Each week is a discussion post with two short (400 words each) essay responses. He wants them pretty detailed. Not too bad but you gotta work for a good grade
I truly enjoyed Professor Keys' class, it reignited my passion for history. He introduced a deeper, often overlooked perspective on California history, expanding my knowledge and helping me make meaningful personal connections. Thank you for the engaging lectures and guidance that strengthened my writing.
