Easy going, reasonable guy, only a part time prof
No Comments
Knows his stuff, but does not know how to teach the material.
Helpful, wants you to pass, tries to make the class interesting but its is accounting afterall
Scot is a sexy ****. I can hardly concentrate when he gets involved with this material. My god Ladies hold on to your hearts. Otherwise, prof scot will run away with it. Damn, I passed this course but im taking it again just to be close to HIM.
fascinating & captivating
he's extremely attractive! cannot help falling in love with him...
Professor Laing is a part time professor. As such, he should be hard to get a hold of. He's not. Amazingly helpful, intelligent, and wants you to get a good grade. Take him for ACC 323. Avoid professor Bateman.
Great proff
Didn't screw anyone around and told everyone what was exactly on the exam. The course material itself is a total joke though.

Scotty made the class fun and interesting. He didn't teach straight from the book and if you had any questions he was always easily approachable. He would also always tell you what was on the midterm and the final, so if you read and atleast vaguely understood the material you will do fine.
he is one of the best profs i've ever seen.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. this guy could honestly not teach if his fat, mulleted, dirty crust-tached life depended on it.
good prof, wants everyone do well but you have to do the work and go to class to get the scoop on what's most important for tests, assignemnts. He doesn't teach right from the book - nice.
not sure why someone said that he was horrible I think he is one of the best profs I have had so far - the mid-term was long but that was not his fault! scaling helped the marks a bit more scaling would have been BETTER but The cordinator woudn't go for it!
ONE OF MY BEST PROF!JUST TELL YOU WHAT IS IMPORTENT!VERY HELPFUL IN THE EXAM!
If you can get over the fact that he wears the same clothes to every class he's pretty good. Gives 'alright' examples. But he tries his best to see you do well, tells what will be on the midterm/final. Very helpful and understanding one-on-one.
Great Prof- easy class- read the text book- gives you lots of hints and examples of what is on tests and finals. The final is not by him so it wont be as easy as he wants. Not alot of work in this class- easy B+- Very nice man.
Overall one of the best acct profs ive had. So approachable, and wants to see you do well. He doesnt have a lot of control over exams but tries his best to prepare you for them. This class overall is good, not so acct orintated but good stuff to know!
this prof taught this class as a summer session, it was his first time teaching the class during the fast paced summer schedule it was horrible. Class was 5:30 - 8:30 we were lucky to leave 8:00 and if he could have left at 7:00 he would have. Waste too much time talking about irrelevant things and was not very helpful, dont take him
Scott rocks because he'll be honest with you about what to expect for the final. Since the first day, he would always tell you what was important to remember and what wasn't...such a rarity when you are used to dealing with smug professors who could care less if you failed! AND he's sweet and cute...:D
Scott Laing is one of the worst professors i have ever had. He is VERY lazy and does not prepare for classes. He just comes in and stand up and talk about IRRELEVANT issues instead of teaching (e.g. Course Co-ordinator doesnt tell him what is on the final). I wouldnt wish my enemies to end up with Scott Laing.
he has no idea of teaching. they mark extremely hard and only short essays are on the midterm and final where you have to write it a way that appeals to them. dont be fooled the whole class is doing bad and we cant help ourselves because study hard just doesnt cut it for the class. the readings are boring and hard. dont take scott take bateman
HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!
terrible, he puts no effort into teaching, and hes very messy. However, he does give you class examples very similar to the final, so go to class..
AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
TERRIBLE! Very lazy in that he did not come to class with a prepared lecutre. Not even slides! It was evident that he was a part time prof and didn't actually care about teaching anything. He constantly stated he didn't know what was on the exams, he didn't make them. Translate-- don't ask me... I'm just here to make a little side cash!
incredible prof great person and very helpful - would recommend him for any course
Unfortunately some of the reviews here are accurate. He does not put enough effort into his class. He is a part-time teacher @ smu, and he is on the lazy side. He does not care about students doing well, and blames most of the course faults on the coordinator so he takes no responsibility. Go back to Dal.
I really enjoyed class with this professor. He was funny, personable and a very nice guy. In contrast what others say he does want you to do well and he will do a lot to get you where he wants you to be. I would take another class with this man in a heartbeat!
Mr. Laing is a nice man, but a terrible part-time teacher. He is friendly and easy to get along with, but if you want a good grade, take the course by a full-time prof @ SMU because scott is lazy and his board notes are terrible.
Awesome professor! very personable and easy to talk to. he wants everyone to do well and will give a lot of really good hints for mid-terms and finals. I would take another class with him anytime :)
Great proff, second time taking this class, he was very helpful and informative.Makes things easy to understand, clear and helpful about whats gonna be on exams and very fair when marking them. Highly recommended
he is the man, just go to calss and learn the problems he solve and always come to midterm and final review, he will tell you what exactly is going to be in the exam.. i got a high grade and he is a very fair marker and if you are doing poorly he will do what he can to get you out of the danger zone. avoid all professors and take Acct with him
He is a little lazy, but as long as you do the problems he does, you should be fine. Fair marker and tells you what will be on the exam.
Scott was the best prof I've ever had! Math isn't my strong suit and I hated accounting going into this class and came out with an interest in majoring in it. He wants each student to succeed. He gave questions for HW which were reviewed in each class. I am trying to take ACCT 2242 with him he is that good! Funny and nice guy too.
Scott Laing is an odd one, he kind of has two sides. As a teacher he kinda sucks, his notes are reeeeally bad and loves to pick on people in class, but as a guy hes awesome. He goes out of his way to help you with anything and with regards to the subject arguably one of the smartest profs at SMU
A good prof in the sense that he is helpful and is clear about what is on the midterm and final. But the board notes are very disorganized, and his style of teaching isn't great. He will do a problem and not show anyone how he got his answers and when we ask he replies " You guys should know this" ;;
Good guy but not such a great prof. He expects you to read each chapter, which is reasonable, but he expects you to be an expert after just reading the chapter. Rather than teaching and expanding on the book he just gives questions and expects that you will know how to solve them. If given the choice, I'd take this with someone else next time.
great prof , easy going and knowledgeable, take his class
I am a straight A+ or A student and have a C in his course. I would avoid him.
Terrible Prof, avoid at all costs! I am a straight A student. He doesn't teach well, using no power points or notes.Does questions from the back of chapters, but doesn't put an effort into teaching material. Asks people for answers, but since he doesn't work out questions in advance the answers shouted out are incorrect. Nice guy otherwise.
He does not know how to teach in my opinion and he makes material that is relatively easy very difficult by introducing his own methods which are very different from the book and ends up confusing students. He also hates questions and interrupts or cuts students off while they are asking a question by talking over them.
great guy! knows his stuff you need to work hard in his class to get a good grade but you learn alot! some people dont do the work and thwir grade suffers. enjoyed the class take him for any accounting class you can - great prof
Scott Laing... what a guy. If you posess the ability to read 40 pages chapter and regeritate every little detail when grilled and picked on in class, take him. If not, DO NOT!!! He's such a jerk in class, outside hes surpisingly nice, like a different guy. Would only recommend if you really enjoy accounting.
Worst prof ever. I'm a straight A student and found this class a complete waste of time. Comes to class with no lesson plan, no ppt, nothing but his phone which he checks periodically. Expects everyone to self teach themselves. Only cares about his dal students. Avoid him at all costs
Avoid at all costs he probably comes on here and rigs the ratings to lure unsuspecting students in because there is no way he can have such good ratings he actually sets you up to fail on purpose and hates questions.
He never told us the detail solution, when I ask question, he said read your book. All right, if I can do everything myself, why I need a teacher?
Awsome prof, very helpful and approachable. Good teaching style, very thorough examples in class and exams are just like assignment and in-class problems.
Scott Laing is hands down, the best Accounting prof at SMU!
Horrible prof! AVOID!!!!!!!!!! no lesson plan!!!!!..... expects you to be an expert after reading the book. Does not teach! Classes are not mandatory because you dont learn much. Have to teach yourself
Horrible prof! Difficult to pass, negative personality!
Scott is really an interesting pro. You'd better read the textbook before class, cause he will not talk about all the contexts and it's easier to follow him.
Best professor ever in accounting departments. He is so interesting and helpful. Willing to take his course if possible.
I don't know why there's so many bad ratings, of the 3 accounting profs I've had so far , he was the best. Taking another class with him now actually. There's quizzes but he'll tell you exactly when. Doesn't give any extra work than what he's required to in the curriculum.
this was the most fun class I've had so far. Prof Laing had lots of industry experience and we had lots of participation in class. if you dont come to class it woudl be hard to pass the class will take him again if I can
Really good accounting professor at SMU! Medium workload, easy to get along with! Pay attention to the theories and topics mentioned in class. Fair marker!
Probably the worst professor I've had at smu so far. He doesn't teach anything.. he expects the students to know all the answers and teach the class for him. For a lot of us its our first accounting class. He literally said "I like coming to class completely unprepared". Dont ask him questions either, he will just say "read the book".
He's a very nice guy to talk to outside of class, but he's not a good professor. He's never showed up to class prepared and he expects you to know everything despite this being the first accounting class for most students. His pop quizzes are tough and I ended up teaching myself the material as best as I could.
He's a solid guy, very friendly. His teaching style takes some getting used to. Once I taught myself some stuff, everything he taught in class made sense. He's usually unprepared, but goes through questions with you. Tends to pick on the students whose name he knows.
He's an okay professor he does the work in Excel instead of the board which makes it hard to follow. He does not want to talk after class sometimes. To be fair I paid him for the full hour. Sometimes he goes off topic. But take this class only if you are ready to do a lot of personal studying. But he can be a nice person as he gives grade generousl
NICE GUY! GREAT PROF WOULD TAKE AGAIN . WANTS YOU TO READ THEBOOK
Bit of an odd guy but nice enough. Hates being asked to repeat himself so make sure you pay attention. Textbook is absolutely mandatory if you want a good grade - his lectures can be super erratic and his examples can be hard to follow. But his exams not bad and he likes to drop hints on what to expect. Wouldn't mind having him again.
Super nice guy, his lectures are sometimes hard to follow with no real structure. Pop quizzes every few classes. Reading the textbook is crucial to understanding anything he is talking about. Once he learns your name he picks you to answer questions in class constantly.
he is an okay prof once you get past his arrogance and trust me theres a lot of it he's not that bad get ready to read he expects u to know and have read the chapters
He doesn't even teach you material, he just goes over some questions from the chapters and expects you to know every single thing about accounting, even though this is a beginner level course. The lectures have no real structure to them, and he repeats himself about reading the chapters constantly. I don't recommend.
amazing guy!! knows a lot about how businesses are run. ask him questions about business and he will tell you some interesting stories. take him
cool guy he gives good hints on what's gonna happen on midterms and exams he is easy going, but he also gives it to you how it is reading book takes you a long way his TA Rachel is also very nice and a fair marker
He is heavy on you reading the chapters in the textbook and knowing the content & how to use it, will most likely not hold your hand through doing it, so if you don't put in the work you will fail. Had him for financial & managerial accounting, tells you when there are quizzes as well as what is important and will be on the exams.
This professor has a very sarcastic way of teaching. He only will do practice questions in class, he expects you to be fimiliar with everything before class. Never tought anything. I would not recommend taking this course with Scott. this course is already hard enough as is. I spent lots of time and money for tutors to be able to pass the class.
Not really a good prof, if you are a person who benefits from going to class everyday and taking notes this prof isnt the prof for you. He Is terrible has the Im just here because I have to be attitude he WILL NOT do a single thing all class if no students tell him parts of a practice question. He really stood up and did nothing one class. Lol
This guy is the worst prof ever. Biggest jerk of all time. He got picked on as a child you can tell. He is lazy and makes the most snarky comments and laughs while he sucks on his water bottle. Amazing how he still has a job. Class isnt hard if you do Practice questions out of the book on your own
He's very funny, makes class interesting and fun. You can learn a lot from this guy. It's not an easy course but if you go to class and pay attention you will enjoy it. One of the best Profs I've ever had!
Honestly one of the worst profs I've ever had. He literally doesn't teach anything and just does the practice problems from the book in class. He's extremely arrogant and rude and has no problem just standing at the front of the class and skipping questions if no one knows the answers. If accounting isn't your thing, you'll probably need a tutor.
he is an awesome guy! not sure why there are some low ratings? if you go to class and do all of the work you will get a good grade. he makes sure you know whats on the tests. he gives the best reviews of any prof ive had. you should definitely take him!!
I got an F for the class and I was taking the class with many people who were doing it for a second time. Scott is arrogant and comes to class thinking you have read the entire textbook and if you have no idea whats going on hed rather move on to the next question because he thinks its out of laziness. He doesnt help if you give wrong answers.
nice guy very helpful during office hours
Easily the worst professor I've ever had and known as the worst accounting prof at smu. Do not take a class with him. His lectures are vague and he seems to do his best to make it unclear as to what you should be learning. Also seems to hate being asked questions. Nothing personal but he should not teach at smu. He gets a lot of bad feedback.
interesting lectures, made the midterm an easy A, definitely take him!
Its asynchronous so i dont know much about him personally. Be prepared for the course(regardless of prof) to have a 37 long answer midterm with only 2 hours to complete(literally class avg was a 51). He marks the assignments pretty easy, and posts lots of stuff to help you.
MIS is run by Bateman, Scott is just there for the show, essentially no feedback is ever given via midterms so you have no clear path to improving yourself for the final. This flows through the course and Bateman makes up an MOTC framework with no example questions or walk throughs to how to actually answer a question with this made-up framework.
DO NOT take this class with Scott unless you want to be falling asleep halfway through his lectures. Extremely vague prof , you will absolutely need to teach yourself the content. Don't bother watching the lectures as it is a complete waste of time.
Scott is a great prof and seems like a nice guy. the lectures were great but they were prerecorded. I would have rathered them live. definitely listen to the lectures for whats on the tests. I would recommend taking the class with him
An okay prof, would not take a class with him again. Recorded lectures were not helpful. Study the textbook yourself and practice the suggested exercises on Pearson. This will help a lot. He will stress to you that "time management is key". This means that for his midterms and finals, there will be more questions than normal (eg. the final was 11)
Prof Laing was amazing! course was easy A. the course was coordinated so he had to use the tests provided by the coordinator. I woudl have liked it better if the lectures weren't prerecorded but many Prorfs are doing the same these days. enjoyed the class immensely which is hard to do with most courses. Taake him!!
Pro: answers emails promptly, good hints on midterm/exam questions, exam questions are fair. Best described as a self-taught course. Pre-recorded lectures really don't do much. Essentially too busy with his other jobs to do actual office hours. Or will announce a different time for office hours each week 5 minutes before.
Weekly quizzes and practice Qs won't fully prepare you for the final. Solves practice Qs in class but doesn't explain the process. Expects you to read the book and know the material before class so he doesn't bother fully explaining it all. Always ends 75 min classes after about 40 mins. Prepare for self-taught course or take a different prof
Packs the exams from front to back and you barely have time to even think about the questions. He even acknowledges through an announcement he posts beforehand that you must know exactly what you're doing or it is unlikely that you'll finish. Just piles on to uni stress
What people need to understand about the 2241 and 2242 courses in general is that the book will only do so much, you MUST do the practice. He heavily emphasizes this but people still don't get it. The questions for the quizzes, midterm, and final are directly pulled from the practice. It's an easy A+ if you put in some work
He's not accessible outside of class. Everyone was afraid to ask questions bc he once answered "I mentioned that go back and watch the whole lecture again" when asked a fair question. Final was very hard (11 questions and barely enough time to finish). Slim pickings when it comes to acct profs at SMU, so it could have been worse tbh.
Scott tends to do a little quick overview in the class on the chapter before kind of rushing through the practice questions. Final was tough with some questions that were incredibly hard and somewhat different from what we'd seen. He is only ever available from Monday-Wednesday because he is busy at his cottage every other day. Try another teacher
You must do the practice exercises as these questions from pearsons ebook are used for quizzes, midterm and final. It's an easy A if you put some work in. He gave an extra quiz because a lot of people missed a quiz for a variety of reasons. He fidnt have to do that but wanted everyone to do well. Definitely take him!
He was an alright prof. He is only accessible Monday to Wednesday which is a bit annoying, but whatever, but when you ask a question he will tell you to watch all the lectures over to find the answer... He went over material quite quick and explained it as if he was explaining it to someone who has been in accoutning most of there life.
Great teacher overall
Prof. Laing was good natured, and it felt like he wanted students to do well. Do practice questions outside of class to prepare for tests, available in the online textbook.
Prof Laing was a nice guy. He seemed to want everyone to do well. I recommend taking him for accounting
Expects students to know everything before class, refused to answer questions, abruptly ended each 75min lecture after only 30. Lecture consisted of watching math being entered into excel without explanation. MyLab is mandatory for the course but doesn't explain. Prepare to teach yourself! Was not available outside of class and was not sympathetic.
He was an ok guy and tried to keep the class going even when he said it was getting harder for him to see things in the classroom so he moved it to online. too bad the exam had to be done on campus. Other than that I would recommend taking him
Prof Laing seems eager to help students succeed. Do the practice questions - they're key for the quizzes and exams. Unstuck AI was a big help for preparing, along with the online textbook resources.
Avoid his class lectures, but DO NOT MISS PRACTICE QUESTIONS. He really cares about learning. You need to practice a lot to do well in this course. The course includes quizzes, midterm, and final exam. Try to manage your time during the exam, as it is the biggest challenge.
