He is awesome, very helpfull, funny, enthusiastic, D best

He is arrogant and has to be right, even when he is not right. As long as you Play the game (which is a direct quote from him) you will do well. He definetly knows the English language.
You will learn a lot from Scott and you will have use of that knowledge for the rest of your life.
Honesly,I do not like writing, but Scott showed my the beauty of English language.
One of the best teachers I had in my life, and I had a lot... Scott taught me to love reading and the English language!
One of the best teachers I've ever had. very organized, helpful and funny. You will learn A LOT!! Take his class!!
The paper was handed to him a week before it was due. Asked for a critique was told it was fine. The grade given was D . Not helpful
fake extra credit!!don't trust him !!
I really like the way he teach. He teaches everything slow and clear. Full of humor, a professional professor.
Tough but u can learn
enjoyed his class alot though sometimes i get scared by his emotions! would still encourage everyone to take his class!

good professor, too much writing.

Very fun and open minded teacher! He is very fair and you will learn a lot!!!
He's kind of a hard teacher, you really have to work to get an A, but a good teacher, nice guy too.
He is a cool guy...
excellent professor. knowledgable and thorough. a tad moody at times, but I highly recommend his class.
Best English instrutor to help you understand what a real essay in college or university. Extremely helpful top-ten-tips handout helps student to sucess in english writing. Stronly recommand.
best of the best eng 1a teacher..requires hard work..very helpful...u'll learn a lot from him...i strongly recommend those of u who really want to learn english to take this class..but dun take this if u dont want to study.

Very hard to get an A....but he is really a good teacher
He's an excellent teacher and I completely agree with his ethics. If you don't come to class in ANY OTHER class, you get dropped too. He makes you think and not everyone likes that. He has the same amount of writing as all of the other ENGL 1A classes.
A lot of reading. It was hard for me. However, he is nice and helpful. I have learned a lot from him.
Excellent professor. I get the sense he actually cares about the subject he is teaching. His course is no push over but he is willing to help clarify how you can improve. Highly recommended.
Tough and harsh!!!! Does not judge student fairly.
He is great!!! The best teacher you can have!!!!
Very helpful and impressive teaching! I named my car after him because of my enthusiasm for his classes. However, he is very picky on grammar. Don't take his class if you have problems with grammar or an international student. I failed once only for gramm
NOT TO BRAG, BUT I HAD A $#^TTY ATTENDANCE RECORD, YET KEPT UP ON ALL THE 4 ESSAYS AND 2 WRITING EXAMS AND STILL GOT A STRAIGHT A! IS NOT DIFFICULT TO ACHEIVE AN A IF YOU WORK AT IT. note: FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS ON GRAMMAR, PUNCTUATION, AND ESSAY LAYOUT!
Lankford by far is the EASIEST english teacher that I have ever taken. Of course, I did all the work on time too.
I aggree whole heartedly with the previous 2 ratings; Doc Scott was a very easy teacher for me as well. His curriculum is very straightforward and he pampers the heck out of his students in hopes that they attain that much coveted "A". I did i

I took the fill series from him and had a great time. Classes are an informal discussion of the work that allow for various opinions to be put forth. Most importantly he is willing to be proven wrong in these discussions. And you'l get an A if you want.
He is a great teacher and I learned a lot from him. You have have weekly readings and weekly tests (also three essays). Never the less I would recomend him to anyone.
Very nice professor, always willing to help, clear, and organize. Highly Recommended
My favorite professor at Foothill AND Williams :) This guy is the greatest, truly. If you put in any effort at all and show him that you give a damn, he'll spend whole afternoons helping you with any problem you bring to him, be it academic or personal.
Not just another liberal, he'll actually let you express your opinions even if you don't agree with him which rare among professors. Class isn't a cakewalk but will always help you no matter what and will actually take the time to help you. Great person
Very biased when it comes to international students. Took his class to try to improve my english, but got shot down because my english is not good to start with???? Don't ever take his class, maybe he doesn't like foreign students.
One of the best teachers I've had at Foothill! He chooses great books for the class that make you think and are interesting! He mainly lectures in class and has in-class essays, but they help you to prepare for the tests and essays! He's hard, but worth it
He'll do everything to help you get an A! He's reasonable, helpful, and clear. I got a B but still highly recommend him!
Not recommended.
Scott is a great teacher. He is very helpful and cool. His weekly in-class essays will teach you how to write.
He's only helpful to certain students. If you are an international student, do NOT take his class. He seems to like the local students more as they share a common background/culture. Didn't learn anything from his class. I wouldn't recommend it.
the previous post is ****. mr. lankford grades fairly, if u made a point u got an A, even if u cannot contribute in class u can still get A, nth related to cultural bkground n stuff
Very energetic and enthusiastic about his curriculum. A lot of work, but I definately felt that my writing improved tremendously. A bit of a grammar-nazi, so international students beware.
When I took him he put up several examples of class essays by intnat'l students after each essay. Isn't prejudiced against anybdy, but seems to discreetly try to push his liberal homosexual philosophy through the assigned readings. But this doesn't detract from his merit as an ENG professor though.
It's true! If you're an international student and your english is average, never ever ever take his class. He expects international student to write like a professinal book writer! He isn't prejudiced or anything. He's just too strict.
Great class! Lankford is an amazing teacher and the books he assigns are fantastic. If you have any trouble with an assignment, Lankford is always ready to help. Don't worry, international students, he's great!
Wonderful, Helpful professor. Great, interesting content in class. Enjoyed class, taking Eng1b in winter.
great teacher- took for eng 1a and 1b....highly recommended
Fun class...only took a seminar with him but he was genuinely interested in the students. The guy helped out as soon as I asked. Pretty darn nice.
I don't know where people are getting the int'l students thing, he's been helpful to all the int'l students that I know. He's a tough grader, but if you know you're stuff, you'll do well.
he is a great teacher. has a high standard of grading, but you'll learn a lot. highly recomended
The material Lankford has you read is contemporary, informative and rewarding. He thoroughly briefs you on what he plans to grade you on, give you helpful writing tips, and is very interested in helping his students. He doesn't grade that hard--make sure you attend class and read. You'll do fine.
I took English 1A almost two years ago and it was great. He's a very knowledgeable and helpful teacher.English is not my first language, but I did my best and succeeded in this class. So,int'l students, don't be afraid to take his class.Trust me,you'll be thankful later.
Decent teacher. Fantastic material. Class more difficult than Engl1A so be prepared.
AMAZING teacher! Prof. Lankford is one of the most compassionate, inspiring, energetic, helpful and facinating teachers I have ever had. He changed my life. If you have a chance to take his class, do.
Great professor. He's quite demanding, but it's worth all the effort. He's really a motivating and helpful professor. He's a great professor in many ways, and he really respect other people's opinions.
BEST ENGLISH TEACHER EVER! I came out of that class with an enlightened perspective on English.
Excellent teacher! His top ten tips are a gold mine. Makes the writing process much easier to understand.
He is a really good teacher. Always willing to help students get through the class. Very clear on all assignments. Lots of in class essays but they are not too bad. I reccomend him for everyone who needs to take English 1A and 1B.
I had fears that Eng 1b would be a killer in comparison to Eng 1a. Boy was I wrong because his choice of books and essay topics were awesome and I learned more than just enhancing my english/writing skills. The weekly essay tests assisted in solidifying a strong foundation for my writing techniques. Lankford is an awesome teacher!!
Best teacher EVER!!! Really opened my eyes not only to important global issues, but also to easy tools that guarantee success as a writer. His handout packet is the best thing I've ever had to purchase for a class. I used it all throughout 1B. Quick Access was a waste though. He makes MLA so easy! Allows rewrite oppurtunities. AWESOME!!!
the BEST prof.,I took both 1A and 1Bn with him learned a LOT, inspired to be a great writer.

Easy A.
I really loved this class. He picks really interesting subject matter and goes out of his way to make sure that you feel good about your writings. He even lets you rewrite papers that you didn't do well on. He is very smart and doesn't rely on just one students genious like some english teachers do. He really tries to engage teh whole class.
Insightful, really goes above and beyond to show you the various meanings of language. I haven't had him for very long, but its easy to see that he genuinely cares about all of his student succeeding. If you do the reading, and ask questions when you aren't sure, you shouldn't have a problem doing well.
He's a great teacher! One of the best in Foothill... Do not miss your chance to take his class. Also, he uses a point system which gives you a lot of flexibility regarding assignments and tests. Highly recommended.
Excellent teacher, he definitely improved my essay writing skills. I feel I am so much better now. And he is a very nice grade too. Also he was a rewrite policy on his three take home essays that let you earn back up to 20 points each which is very helpfull in getting an A.
He is the greatest English teacher
Scott was probably one of the few teachers that helped improve my writing. He encourages you in writing. Focus and participate in class--it'll help you more than you think. 3 essays, 3 books, can rewrite all. Do NOT be tardy for his class! Lectures are interesting and fun. TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO LEARN AND GET A GOOD GRADE.
I also had him for ENGL 48 A and ENGL 34. Very inconsistent grader (a complaint by many students in the classes). Frequent last-minute syllabus changes. Twice confused assignments on midterm/finals, thus asked questions pertaining to wrong writers (i.e. ones he hadn't assigned for that particular test). Lots of blah blah, not so much textual work.
He is the greatest English teacher I have ever met! A funny guy who understands his students. As an ESL student, my writing skills have greatly improved over the past 3 months in his class. He has his own way to teach English. His Top Ten Tips are very very very helpful! If you want to improve your wiriting skills, take him! No mid-term. No final. 3 take home essays and some in-class.
It's pretty ridiculous that he based a class around his own book and then made it sound like he's and equivalent to a Stanford professor. He's nice and sympathetic but very full of himself. I didn't really learn anything in his class, except about Scott Lankford.
Dr. Lankford is an excellent instructor. He discusses things that he's familiar with (i.e. his own studies) but it makes things more interesting. Would you rather read strictly from a text or hear about how it's applied to the real world? His grading is fair and he encourages students not only to think for themselves, but also to speak up, too!
He was great in American Literature. I also took several other classes from him and he was consistently attentive and interested in the success of his students. I think that he is misunderstood. People probably take his politics (and perhaps sexual identity) personally and are a bit offended by one or the other. He is a great instructor.
He is HILARIOUS!
Very helpful professor. Lots of reading and writing. Expects well written papers. Very available if you need him.
we're about to finish up the quater and i felt that he was a good teacher. had 3essays total (take home) and at least one in class essay each week. i mean its college, suck it up. he's really helpful, wish i had him in high school becuase writing would've been so much more easier for me. wish that he taught eng 1b next quater.
Hilarious. Talented. Kind. Caring. Please take him if you want to change the course of your college education. Please stay away if you are lazy and looking for an easy ride into English 1B. This guy deserves the best students they are. I loved every class; I learned so much; and he is the best teacher I ever had.
I have yet to see someone who doesn't like Scott. He's helpful and he'll get you through whatever you need. He might seem intimidating at first, but when you get to know him he's a great help. My writing has definitely improved. If you take him for 1A be prepared to sit through a lot of technicalities and not too much discussion about the reading.
Excellent teacher, competent and dedicated. Motivated and and truly wants the students to succeed. Very helpful and approachable during office hours, too. You may or may not like his personality (kind of bubbly), but he's definitely a great teacher and knows his subject thoroughly. Highly recommended teacher and class.
Good Teacher! I was never bored in his class. There was a good ammount of work in the class so be prepared
Lankford is a superb teacher and the only way to fail his class is by not coming in. oh and to those of you who thinks he isn't hot, go to foothill.edu to find pictures from a few years ago *puts on ear muffs to protect against fangirl screams*
He is good at teaching but he is a horrible person! He learned who everyone is in the last couple of weeks (he wouldn't remember anything!). He lost my essay and blamed me for it. If you like a teacher who is one-on-one don't take Lankford. He doesn't teach because he likes to help students...
Prof. Lankford is one of the best English teachers at Foothill College. I highly recommend anyone, particularly ESL students, take Prof. Lankford's English 1A class. He is very helpful and he gives me clear instructions on essay writing. I should have rewrite three essays to earn extra credit. As one English professor and a writing tutor said, "Dr
He is honest, but tactful about your standing in class. You just have to read a lot and turn in all of your work. Excellent professor I ever had. I learned so much being in his English 48A class this fall. Plan on taking him again for English 48B.
Awsome professor who is realy helpful and clear. Follow the directions and you will do well.
Fairly good teacher- definitely one of the batter ones at Foothill, though that's not saying much. There was a ton of reading but it still a doable amount, and the books were interesting. He gives everyone an opportunity to get an A with his rewrites and extra credit. Only thing i didn't like was that we didn't get much discussion done in class.
hard grader. his grading gets harder and harder. but he's an execellent teacher.
Great teacher. Strict on essays and grammar problems.
a little too personal with his class
A wonder teacher, he has a passion for english and is very helpful with how to do research and find sources for papers. Tough but fair on assignments but worth taking. Probably one of the best english teachers at Foothill.
Great and easy teacher!!! not really hard. he's a fair grader!! i really enjoyed his class.
i would have to say he is a great teacher. him and i had alot of one on one time. if you know what i mean ;P
I did not enjoy this clas are at all! I found it hard to sit there and listen to him talk at me. Class was really a drag to go to.
great teacher!!he is rali a passionate personalizer and great explainer!!too little class discussion and his grading is very tough!! if you want an A, try to pick wolterbeek! but taking his class is a wonderful experience!
you need to have really good english in order to get an A in his class...you got inclass essays every week and if you cannot write an essay with zero grammar mistakes, dun take him or your grade will be B
Fab teacher;Enthusiastic & funny;won't allow class to get tangentier:-)Tries to address everyone's needs;Talks a lot but NEEDS to;slips important info into lectures so pay attention!Assigned 5 books, daily short pop quizzes, weekly essay exams w/option to take them online, 3 lrgr essays, & rewrite opportunities;2 busy to be friends outside class :-
he's great professor..but don't expect to get high grades if you think you're not hardworking enough
The only downside to Scott is he expects you to rewrite (a lot), keeps your attendance in check (daily quiz, weekly test), & usually he lectures too much about the same thing. However, he is willing to help, has lots of extra credit, lets you fix things, & is fair if you show interest and put in effort into the class. Different books every quarter!
Very clear on what he wants. The books are pop and easy to read, as far as eng1a is concerned. He often tends to give the same lecture 2 or 3 times in a row, but based on the other student's grades, it seems most of the class didn't quite grasp what he was saying the first time around. Minor grammatical issues do not bring your grade down much.
Great professor! Interesting lecture and very helpful. The books are popular and fun too. He wants new ideas and creativity. His class is a little bit hard because u do need to do many efforts. However, he u can persist and do what u need to do, u will get success.
Scott teaches extremely well. This class was the hardest class I ever took because English is not my first language and I am more of an engineer by nature. He sets his standard very high but teaches you all you need to get there, and cheers you on while you get there. I used to suck at writing, now I love it. And he is also the nicest person!
Scott is a superb teacher with a high standard, who gears you up for university and academic writing. Anything but boring. Scott is outstanding in that his primary concern is teaching his students, while most professors are concerned with testing their students. He will show you exactly how to do what he expects. His grades are fair.
Although the work load of this class is quite heavy, I learn a lot in this class. I would say resilience is the key to get an A in this class. Go for it!
He is an amazing teacher makes everything fun and interesting to learn. Helps you in every way he can to write A papers. Great Professor and you can tell he loves what he does.
Excellent teacher. Cares about students, is funny and makes learning fun. Demands lots of students, but offers plenty of support so that you can meet his demands. Makes you feel like you are smart and worth a million dollars! Take his class, work hard, ask questions when you don't know what he's talking about and you'll learn lots.
Superb professor, funny, sometimes "overacts" to get students' attention, so that you remember what he says about the mistakes you made. Strict, high demands, but clearly tells students what he wants, instructions and expectations are always high but clear for his class. Scott is very helpful, and really cares about his students.I Love him!
Excellent teacher! I really enjoyed his in class discussions and his book selections. Very demanding, but straight forward and crystal clear. Reading quiz every day for the first 5 min of class. In-class essay every Friday. If you put in the work, an A is achievable. If you slack off, the small quiz points add up.
This is a professor who loves teaching. He implores students to ask for help, responds quickly to emails, and is always excited in class. Hands down, the best teacher I ever had. Thank you Scott.
It might sound a bit cliche, but he really is the best professor I have met in Foothill so far! Prior to taking his class, I was a little bit intimidated by it as the class seemed to be demanding. However, he helped me along the way in my efforts to make an A possible! I learned so much from him and you would also never regret taking his class!
This teacher is ok. Sometimes he goes off on a tangent on explaining what we're suppose to be doing, which can be really boring to listen to. I can tell he likes his job but when he has 200 students to grade it's hard to get a full feedback on our writing when there is something wrong. It would be nicer to know how to improve our writing.
his class is a really great class. i learned a lot from it.
LOVE Scott! I've never learned so much in an English class without being bored. He is very helpful and really does care about his students. He makes it impossible to fail his class. I wish I could have him as my English teacher every quarter!
I generally loathe English, but I loved Lankford's class (I took it last year). He chose interesting readings, explained what he was looking for, and was very helpful (and approachable). Make sure you show up on time every day for the reading quizzes (don't worry, they are pretty simple). I really hope to get an English teacher like him again.
He's a great person and his class is potentially life-changing.
His class was definitely not easy, but not as tough as you might imagine because he was always there to help you. His amazing teaching assistant was very encouraging and really tried to help you succeed. Overall the best class I have taken at Foothill so far!
I loved Lankford's class. I absolutely recommend taking his class if possible. He is really easy to talk to and is very helpful when it comes to writing essays. The books were for the most part pretty good. Just make sure you show up on time and don't miss the quizzes because believe it or no they do add up and they will hurt your grade.
Very engaging class, and attendance is mandatory. Interesting reading books. Overall fair class.
Great teacher. Offers a lot of extra credit and ways to get back points. DO IT. its so worth it. He is a great teacher. Really funny. I hope you take him :)
Give this class your all and you will strive. Scott gives the best advice and by far the best feedback after completing any piece of work. If you don't put in the effort, however, I don't know what to tell you. English classes take up a lot of time and effort, but that translates into knowledge, and maybe even character; you never lose character
Great teacher. Passionate about subject and a lot of fun. If you don't get a good grade on your essays, you can rewrite them and raise your grade by 10%. He has in class writing tests, but there are replacement tests, so you can raise your grade, or use them to replace missed tests. Got an A. Highly recommend him!
Overall a very good teacher if you can stand him talking about himself a lot and his degrees and books haha.
One of the best professor's on campus in my opinion. His assignment's do take time and his grading isn't the easiest, but he will transform the average student into brilliant writer's if his guidelines are followed. After taking 1A with him, I passed 1B with ease. Highly recommended.
Great Professor. Easy going, pretty chill class as long you do your work. Even if you slack, there are plenty of make-up tests and essay re-dos that can boost up your grade.
Extremely helpful in learning how to write, research and persevere in a college setting. Very open to helping those who need it, insightful lectures and group collaboration. There is a lot of work involved yet if you listen to him and do what he teaches then you will know how to write for the rest of college. Highly recommended
BEST English teacher Ever! He is clear of what he expects on all assignments. I highly recommend him. You know from advance what your homework's will be and what the future essay's will be about.
He's an amazing teacher! I enjoyed his lectures, teaching style, and his assignments. I highly recommend him if you have good work ethics and want a well-deserved grade.
Scott assigns some really controversial topics that many don't enjoy reading. Enforces his beliefs in his readings a little too strongly and doesn't allow for student discussion because of his constant interruptions or comments. Interfering figure
Love, love, love Lankford. He isn't easy, but he will teach you how to write. Best professor I've had.
Scott is an interesting character who is VERY qualified to teach, and he will remind you of this by mentioning his Stanford Ph.D every day. He lectures for the full 2 hours and loves to hear himself talk. He rarely gives A's, and insists that everyone do rewrites. Wastes tons of class time and is very dull. I made no improvements as a writer.
He is really smart and is a great writer but he does not let the students voice their opinions. The entire class is filled with Scott talking and when a student attempts to speak up he seems uninterested. He also makes negative remarks about the way Foothill students are in comparison to students at Stanford and Berkley.
One of the best teacher I ever had.. after taking his class you will realize that before you did not know how to write and that's what makes him an excellent teacher.. 3 big essays that you can re-write and increase your grade by 10 percent.. quiz every three week but can re-take a quiz 2 times. Attendance counts for percent of your grade. easy A
Scott's class will change your style of writing. He is funny, intelligent and helpful. His experience as a teacher and Ex-dean makes him a valuable asset for students of the english language. You will not regret taking his class, but don't expect an easy A. He will make you work for it and if you do, you will get an A.
Prof. Scott is really cool. He can seem stuck up and grumpy a once in a while but he is so passionate about his subject. Yeah, he mentions Stanford and how he's written books but the things you learn in this class will go far beyond anything you learned in a previous english class. He really teaches you to write well and he's a super helpful prof.
Scott is a good teacher and I have become a better writer through taking his class but he is one of the weirdest people I have ever met. He talks about himself, how good he is at skiing/playing the guitar, and about the books he is writing all the time, but if you can just ignore him during his rants about himself you'll be fine.
Scott is one of the best professors I have ever had. It is obvious he knows what he's doing and how to push his students to their limit. If you really want to improve your english skills, take his class. He assigns books that are super challenging yet inspiring. I like him so much and hope we'll cross paths again professor! P.s: he's so funnnyyyyy
He assigns an average amount of reading but the material is all very interesting. His class is very organized and sticks to the syllabus. His lectures are entertaining and he is very approachable. Office hours are really helpful.
I like Scott! But, most of the assignments are very hard to accomplish b/c his directions are very ambiguous and unclear. If you work hard, come to office hours/get help, you'll do good but this class is by no means easy. All the books he assigned were supper hard to follow along. Overall I was just really confused :/
Some other reviews said he is unclear and ambiguous. I'm not sure who they were taking, but that is NOT Scott. He tells you exactly everything you need to do and when it's due. He even has this thing called "Top Ten Tips" where you can find almost anything you might be confused about while writing an essay. He is 100% committed to all his classes.
Great professor! The books that he picks for us to read are really engaging and gets you thinking. Highly recommend him!
Wonderful professor. Would highly recommend to anyone. Very passionate about the subject. Very inspirational. He makes himself as available as possible for office hours and essay feedback. Organized course work. Don't be late. Don't eat in class. Don't use your phones.
Scott is a great professor, but he tends to push his opinions onto his students. So I would suggest you only take his class if you are interested or passionate about climate change and have the same political views as him. He can also be condescending at times, which makes it hard to feel comfortable speaking up in class.
This class heavily revolves around climate change so, if it's not something you're interested in or interested in learning about don't take the class.
If you need to take an 8am, take it with Scott. You will definitely stay awake the whole time. There's a lot of reading and you'll need to show up to class knowing what you're talking about (but you could probably get away w staying silent sometimes). He seems like such a tough prof but just do your work and listen to his feedback. That's it, dude.
Dr. Scott really cares for his students. He's an entertaining guy. There's lots of reading, and almost every class, he assigns everyone to be in a group to present what they have learned in the assigned reading. Sounds kinda dreadful, but it's not bad at all so don't worry. His grading for essays are very fair, and gives feedback for rough drafts.
Exceptional professor with huge interest in climate change. His Honors classes, of course, will require about double the amount of papers the usual English class does. No deadlines for all essays; you can submit all papers on the last day of the quarter. Tells a lot of (often dry) jokes, but sometimes so cheesy that they become funny.
Best and most influential teacher I've ever had. Take his classes. Yes, it's work, but it's well worth it. Great lectures, super helpful resources (he has Top Ten Tips for basically everything, so you always know exactly what to do if you actually look at them.) Don't procrastinate on the papers and you'll be fine. I had him for 1AH, 1BH, and 1CH.
I would definitely recommend taking Professor Lankford's classes if you have a strong interest in Climate Change. Taking his classes has improved my English writing skills tremendously. Very accessible outside of class and extremely clear grading criteria for the essays (full page one thesis).
Scott is an amazing professor. I have never really liked English but he made it bearable. For Honors, he assigns 3 essays and in class quizzes every week, but he is quite generous with his grading if you follow his criterias. I still use his teachings when I write papers for my other class and they truly helped. He is the best!
Nice guy, funny lectures and the deadlines of his papers are all in the end of the quarter, which is kinda a bad thing since a lot of students procrastinate and end up rushing towards the end and giving poor papers.A good advice would be go to his office hours to ask for advices and write the papers earlier in the quarter. He allows rewrites.
Really good professor who cares a lot about his students, but his class is quite challenging. The book we started reading the first day of class was the most difficult book I've ever read. But it is not difficult to do well in the class. Scott does not grade too harshlyeven giving 100% on writing assignmentsand allowing for rewrites.
Prof. Lankford was great for Children's Lit. His feedback is always clear and he gives students the opportunity to always be engaged. This class is fun, and easy. I took it for summer quarter at Foothill and I felt like maybe I wouldn't be able to handle it; however, he made it easy and while fast paced, not impossible. Totally recommend!
Very hands-off in his honors courses, bc it's honors. He doesn't hand hold you so the class is more like a discussion group and he's the mentor, there for help if needed. Everything is due at the end of the qtr (procrastinators beware) and attendance isn't mandatory. He teaches you techniques but not how to write. Prior knowledge is crucial.
He is so nice for allowing re-writes. Do all of your essays before Week 11. Just do it. You'll want the chances to re-write.
Good teacher
Best English teacher I ever had! You have to make efforts to get a good grade, but he really cares about each student and want everyone to succeed! And he makes hilarious jokes!
Genuinely enthusiastic about english! Centers everything around climate change, however. 3 major essays and a final project due at the very end of the quarter, allows rewrites so don't procrastinate. Optional weekly essays as well. The workload is manageable, so don't be scared, and his grading isn't hard. Really enjoyed his class.
Boring and require a lot of works than others...
For this class as long as you do the 3 essays and 1 of the 4 optional tests each month, you will pass. He is not a hard grader and does care about what he teachers, he can get carried away with the lectures though but he does give 3 breaks. Very funny as well.
Every week, 2 (25 points each) journals ( 50 points) and one test. You can skip 8 journals or 4 tests in order to pass. ( 200 points). Also there is 200 points extra credit. (1000/1200). He will provide books online so no need to buy all his 6 books. (out of them you will read one or two chapters then move on to the next book). Highly recommand
A great teacher who is very thorough and easily accessible. However, he is a difficult grader and tends to knock points if the essay is not done EXACTLY as he said. Understandably. If you're looking for an easy A, this is NOT the class.
just do the rewrites. do them. also, you're going to have to suffer some passive aggressiveness.
Cares a lot about his subject but is bad at talking to students. Either very repetitive or skims through important material super fast. It's really up to you to do the reading and write papers on your own. Gets way too in-your-face about anything he doesn't like. Unpleasant experience to say the least.
Great professor overall. Amazing essay and MLA help. Group work in class. Is very helpful. Would definitely take classes with him again if he wasn't teaching only about climate change.
Absolutely one of the most caring and devoted professors I have ever had in my entire life -- he truly made an effort to educate his students and make his class entertaining. There is a lot of reading and essays, but this class helps prepare you for the workload when you transfer. Don't be put off by the negative reviews, take this class!
Pros: - Easy to get an A if you're pretty good at writing. - 6% extra credit (through essay re writes) and an additional 1.8% if you never skip class. Cons: - Not an English class. You write essays solely on climate change and writing skills take the back seat. Feedback points out flaws but does nothing to improve quality of your writing.
One of the best english teachers/professors I have ever had. It was actually very difficult for me to fall asleep in his class because he was actually interesting and the stuff he lectured about/said was interesting, which is a good thing. As long as you read what you're supposed to and come to class to understand the material you'll do pretty well
BEST TEACHER EVER DON'T @ ME. Yes, he talks a lot. Yes, he gets side tracked a lot. Yes, he jokes around a lot. He is so helpful and responsive. Answers emails very quickly and is always ready to provide feedback on the essays. No midterms or finals, just 3 big essays and a project. Don't skip class cause he gives attendance points every meeting.
Pros: Clearly cares deeply about what he teaches, gives great clear feedback. Cons: He grades pretty harshly. All of the reading is on climate change. Every single book (with one exception), essay, everything is about climate change. That is all we learned about in a writing/reading comprehension class. This is why I wouldn't take his class again.
Why don't you be a professor at STANFORD?
Scott is a passionate professor but his class is more centered around climate change than it is about English. He speaks brusquely at times but this is something you'll get used to over time. Overall you can definitely do well in the class if you put enough effort, but I would not go as far as to say that I've had a net positive experience.
Scott's lecture brought me attention and laugh bc he could be funny sometime. The modules and assignments are given in very clear instruction, and he gave detailed feedback on all my papers. Follow his instruction, you will get a good grade. A very kindness professor who even brought his own fireplace to the classroom due to the cold days.
Scott is truly an exceptional teacher. His book choices are the perfect amount of difficult for this type of class (Kuhn will scare the pants off of you at first but stick it out, it will change your life). He will demand your very best when it comes to essays but gives great feedback and is easy to work with outside of class. Take this class!
Dr. Scott Lankford is the best professor i have had the privilege of taking. He really cares about the subjects he teaches and he really cares about his students He responds to emails and messages through canvas within a day or less. He's an easy grader if it's obvious you've read the material. I wish i needed more classes he offers. I'll miss him.
One of the best teachers I've had at Foothill. Scott wants you to work hard but gives clear grading criteria and offers re-writes with a full grade bump for all essays. He's also a passionate, involved lecturer and cares a lot about his students. You will need to work hard, but if you do you can easily get an A and it will be worth it.
Great Professor. Interesting content that is very important nowadays. Do not skip his lectures and follow instructions and you will get an A. Very flexible homework, you will have a choice what to write and what to read during the whole quarter)) almost no late policy and you can resubmit your work. Strongly recommended English 1A and 1B.
He is hands down the best professor at Foothill! take him, you'll definitely learn a lot. There is reading everyday and he expects you to come prepared since there are group activities most days. There are three essays, as long as you tried, you will pass. For an A, come to class prepared and on time and participate in class regularly is the key.
Best English Teacher I've ever had. I took 1A online. He gives detailed feedback for every essays , so you know what was wrong for the point deductions. He even gives you opportunities to rewrite your essays. If you rewrite & submit, he gives you extra 20 points(up to). He is the teacher who encourage you to be better, not just the grader!!!
I am so glad I took Scott as my first English prof in college. He cares about his students and is always willing to give you lots of feedback. Attendance is absolutely mandatory, even if you submit homework but you're not there you don't get credit for homework. However, class time is spent wisely and its all useful for essays. You won't regret it.
I cannot put up with his condescending attitude. He cares about himself ONLY and his "own interest" and doesn't care about his students.
He is the worst professor at Foothill College.
He cares about his student's success and is understanding. If you miss a class, A you wont get credit for the notes due for that day and B you won't miss much because he mainly focuses on getting people prepared for anything due in his class. His late penalty is also -1 every day that passes which isn't bad.
Scott is alright. His workload is rough in the beginning (60-100 pages per week) for the first four weeks of the quarter, and the workload becomes increasingly lighter towards the end of the quarter. However, I really disliked Scott's persona and his snarky and half-comedy-half-mean responses. Personal gripe I guess.
This is the second class I have taken with Scotthe's the best college professor I've ever had. He gives out so much extra credit it's insane, he is extremely smart/knows what he's talking about and he is all around super caring and funny. His classes are early in the morning but so worth it. I never had a bad day with him. You won't regret it!
Scott is one of the BEST professors I've ever had. He might be brash and gets side-tracked at times, but he really cares about his students and is very friendly! Although the material was tough, he helps us get through it by doing discussions in groups every lesson. He allows rewrites for all the major tests and essays, just do them! And take him!!
Dr. Scott really cares for his students' lives and academic careers. Children's Literature was a lot more work than I thought it would be but it was still an enjoyable class. The structure of the class is very easy every week: reading, 300-word journal, 300-word discussion, and 500-word test. A bit of work but if you put in the effort, it's an A.
Work heavy, but Dr. Scott cares. 3 novels required. Each week there are: 2 page-by-page outline sections (page summaries), 1 class discussion, 1 test essay (small essay). Each book will have a major essay due, but only 2 of 3 essays are required. Lastly, 1 final essay. (Total: 10 tests, 2 essays, 1 final) Tons of Extra Credit & Feedback offered.
Dr. Lankford is amazing. He is really lenient on late work, gives amazing and clear feedback, gives students the chance to resubmit assignments for full credit, and gives extra credit opportunities. The readings can be challenging but it is an honors course. Highly recommend taking his class.
This class is very heavy in the first month and lighter later. He is a little bit mean when gives you comments. I do not like it.
Dr. Scott was a such a great teacher. He really challenges your critical thinking skills and gives good feedback. There's a lot of reading and short essay due weekly, with 2 major essays. As long as you put the work in and follow the rubric you'll be fine. He's very lenient on grading.
attend his office hours! I really appreciate his willingness to help to clear up small little things here and there. He offered our class extra credit and I did most of it which really helped my grade. The work can feel like a lot at times, but I did take his honors course which is to be expected. Overall a really nice experience.
You can redo literally everything so you should get the grade you want. Easy grader on top of that IMO. First unit a little heavy, and then much lighter after that. Every week: 2 page-by-page summaries, one discussion, and one short essay--not that much work to be honest. Offers a ton of extra credit. Only 2 big essays, 1 is optional. Good choice.
WHY IS THIS CLASS SO HOMEWORK HEAVY. I FEEL LIKE IM DROWNING IN NEW ASSIGNMENTS EVERY DAY. STOP ASSIGNING SO MUCH ITS RUINING MY MENTAL HEALTH AND I HAVE OTHER CLASSES TO WORRY ABT TOO
Dr. Scott is amazing! You could turn in the work on the last day if you wanted to. You are able to fix and resubmit assignments. Do the assigned readings and extra credit and you can get an A.
Dr. Lankford is a cool professor. He does assign a fair amount of work, but he is lax about due dates. He gives plenty of time to complete work; the only real due date is by the end of the quarter. The entire quarter is laid out and the work from week to week is the same. I got an A- overall despite B's on both of my Big Essays (extra credit).
Lots of assignments, but can all be turned in until the last day of the quarter. The assignments aren't usually difficult but there's a lot. Dr. Lankford really cares about his students, don't be afraid to reach out if you are struggling in his class. The books we read are diverse and not the usual "american classics". Really enjoyed his class.
