UVSC is known for having horrible math teachers or great ones. This was my second time taking the class but it was SO much better. He really works with you and explains things clearly. If you have to take calc I strongly suggest taking it from him.
FINALLY I really enjoy learning math . He explains with much clarity. He goes over the homework to make sure you understand. You will understand exactly what will be covered in the exams. He keeps you intrested and laughing. I highly recommended him. Take if from me who hated math.
One of the best teachers I have ever had.
Math at UVSC is hard, but this teacher made it seem a lot easier. He even gave me some one on one time that really helped me on one of the test. I definetly recommend this guy.
This was my second time in 1050 and Scott helped me SO much! I finally passed the class. He took a lot of time making sure we understood the subject matter and then as we progressed in the subject, he incorporated all of that into future lessons. He can help you pass this awful class.
Understands where students are coming from. Very knowledgable about the subject. Sprinkles jokes during class to lighten it up, even stood almost on his head in the middle of class.
We were very lucky to get Dr. Lewis as our teacher for Calculus 3. He is not eccentric or arrogant at all and wants you to succeed. You may occasionally see a screwball thrown at you on a test but you'll find nothing you can't work out using the basics you cover in the homework and in class.
This is a hard class but Scott really helps you to understand what you are doing. He gives practice problems for the tests. He is one of the best math teachers at this school. I took this class 3 times and I passed his and understand it.
This is the second time that I've had to take this class. My 1st time around, I had the worst teacher who was very unfair. I knew the very 1st day of this class that he is one of the better math teachers at UVSC. You can tell that he really cares.
The best math teacher that I have ever had. Really helps students understand the math concepts being taught.
He was a very intersting guy. Always tryin to crack jocks. Good teacher and pretty easy tests.
Scott is the best math teacher on campus. He is excellent at explaining things. He gives great reviews. His tests are fair but he prepares you for them. He says funny little things all of the time, he is a funny guy. Best thing about him is that he speaks english.
My rating may be a little biased because I only had his class for two class periods. Why? On the second day of class one student asked a question about a problem in the book. Dr. Lewis spent most of the class period trying to solve the problem and in the end had to resort to help from his brand new students to solve it; not very impressive.
Very good teacher, very clear and concise. Won't pull any crap to try and confuse you on the exams. But more importantly, this guy is freaking halarious. You never know what he will do next.
Very good Math Teacher. He knows his stuff and doesn't mind spending time on problems if you don't understand. He makes it clear what will be on tests; homework isn't bad; and gives clear concise examples in class. Highly recommend him as a teacher. You must come to class in order to pass! His lectures help tremendously!!
I've seen bad math teachers, and he's not bad, but he's not the most fantastic either. I'd say he's average.
Hands down, the best math teacher at UVSC!! No one can do it like Dr. L. Math 1100 is a hard class no mater who you take it from. If you wan't to learn something and have a pass-able class take from the Dr. If you do the Home work you will be fine. He gives great test reviews. His humor is a little crazy but you will learn to love it.
Dr Lewis is the best math teacher you're going to find so pick up one of his classes! Don't get me wrong, the math is tough, but he's a good teacher. He's well rounded, teaches well, and has a little fun while he's at it. You can't go wrong with this guy.
I give him the chili pepper because he desires one. This class was my only guaranteed A for the semester. Show up, do ALL the homework, and do the test review problems and you will be prepared. Not saying it is easy but anyone can pass with a B or better from him if you put in the time and effort.
Maybe I'm dumb but I got tricked with his tests. I think I look into things to much but he did a great job teaching and working with the class to make sure everyone knows what they need to pass. I am taking him again for stats.
Just because you know math doesn't mean you can teach it. It's sad, but Lewis is the best UVSC has to offer for this class.
Yet another class where if you go every time, do the homework, and do the review questions he gives you, you will be successful. I can't say I was that diligent but he was a great teacher and really cared about making sure students understood the material. If you have to take 1050, take it from him.
He's cool, a little boring.
Great Teacher. Does a great job explaining the concepts, so it's not all about memorizing formulas. Willing to go over any homework problems and make sure concept is understood. Do your homework, past tests WEBCT for reviewing. Very fair in grading, gives partial credit for knowing the concept.
He is one of those professors who knows what he/she does.
He is extremely helpful, knowledgable and always willing to work with you to make sure you understand. I HATE math and i have had to take it several times. He is the teacher that has helped me pass. Although he is very monotone and can never seem to make eye contact.
Great teacher. He will push you, but he will also help you. Has a very good knowledge of material.
Dr. Lewis is awesome! He motivates you to keep going, especially when you need it the most. All his review materials for quiz's are just like the quiz's themselves, he just mixes them up a little. But love how he wants you to succeed. He's cheesey, but funny! And his mid-terms/finals aren't with the department. They from him. Which is a lot better.
Fun teacher. Kept the class interesting. Did not move on before we understood material. Reviews for test very helpful. Has a cheesy sense of humor, but very enjoyable. I would recommend Professor Lewis.
Teacher did not teach at all. Try teaching, it is what you are getting paid for.
Has a very cheesy sense of humor, which a couple times helped me learn things. About half way through the semester I wanted to fall asleep during class each day, though. The tests are alright, and make sure you do the homework before each quiz. It helps. Overall only an alright teacher.
Knowledgable and willing to help you, tries to make class fun, explains things really slow so you can understand everything, only quizess every ch. about 5-8 questions, good reviews in blackboard. There will be a mid. and final.
Hard class but helpful teacher. He is very fair with his grading. He gives extra credit but you have to do it at the beginning and middle of the semester. Don't cry to him at the end and beg for extra points b/c he won't give it. He is VERY APPROACHABLE and tries to help the class understand. Good teacher!
Scott is a great teacher. He really makes the math class decent. He let us do extra credit and a writing project for points. He is really good at explaining concepts. He is really goofy too. Take math from him.
I've taken calc before so this was a review. You only hand in some homework. Scott tries to be funny and is easy to talk to and is willing to work with students. homework amount is reasonable if you stay caught up. uses blackboard & always responds to emails. Honor projects were fun too and I learned something by doing them.
dr. lewis is a great teacher. attend as much class as possible even though it isn't mandatory. If you do the homework and do the review problems he gives then there is no reason that you shouldn't get an A on his tests. Good lectures, good tests, and very helpful after class. Not a hard course for math minded students.
Great teacher, the class was hybrid so there was no textbook, all online lectures through Thinkwell. All the teacher was there for was to make sure we were doing our homework so that we could pass tests. Quiz in class every day, test after every chapter but the tests were very fair and easy to Ace if you did your homework. Highly recommend him!
Online, hybrid class. All class lectures were online. Dr. Lewis reviewed each week and then gave a quiz over materials that we were suppose to cover. Test at the end of each chapter. He was very helpful and fun. Very approachable.
Scott wasn't a horrible teacher, but I don't think he was qualified to teach this course. I often had to correct his mistakes and it was obvious he didn't know the textbook well. It was frustrating, and I don't feel as though taking this course helped qualifiy me to teach math in an elementary setting. I had to learn on my own.
Great teacher! Go to class and keep up with homework and you should do well. He is very clear in class and lets you replace your lowest test score with the final if higher.
Very difficult class. I did all the homework, and the review questions and then found that the test questions were designed to trick you. Felt very unfair. A basically nice man, until he felt that you were not "smart" in math, and then he was very condescending. One of the worst experiences of my UVU career.
great professor. generous grader and teaches well. funny and very nice guy. when he gives the class a hard time for something its all in good spirits, he just likes to tease. i'm very happy i took him. worked hard and I got a B. any calc class will be tough so study hard, turn in all the homework and you'll be fine
I've had this guy for two semesters now and I absolutely love the way he runs his classes. He's super sensitive to students' needs and very organized and fair. The only issue I had was with his tests. They can be pretty tricky, but if you really know the material you should do well.
Dr. Lewis is a very nice guy, but this class just sucks. Come to class, and listen to him write down what's already in the book. I asked if he knew of any resources outside of his office hours for help, and he just said no. Disappointed...
He's very clear when he explains the problems on the board, but the examples he give are far simpler than the ones in the homework, forcing you to spend all of your free time in the math lab struggling to figure things out. Also, he only grades about 2/3 of the homework assignments even though you're required to do all of them... very frustrating.
I am a A student. This class is incredibley hard and the teacher makes it even harder. He doesn't care AT ALL about the students. If you ask a question in class he will make you feel dumb (or at least try to). His test are VERY HARD! I promise you will regret taking this class trust me! He seems really nice at first but its a fake! DONT TAKE HIM!!
Lewis is a great person, but the subject is just a tough subject. His jokes and calm personality help you while in the class, but once you are out, you find that the questions are much harder. He is a great teacher though and willing to help those who fall behind. I would definitely take this from him again .
Keep in mind this was a senior class. He was unprofessional and he always had mistakes during his lectures, he didn't expound the concepts enough for us to expect the HUGE level of detail that he expected from us on the tests!!! He compares your grades with other students, if someone did an amazing proof or project, then you are out of luck.
4 tests + final. Gives reviews-must study. Gives partial credit so write down anything. Tests are pretty tough. A lot of equations to memorize. Doesn't curve. Random attendance questions. Good class if you put in the work. Final is the hardest - nothing is off limits. Had an A throughout the year then final dropped me to a B.
Professor Lewis is a fantastic professor who really cares about his student. He's willing to help on the homework and, if you come early and he is there, he may even answer your questions in class. His lectures are mostly things from the book, so you can learn everything in the book. Tests require you to understand the material deeply, though.
Online Class lots of videos on Launchpad. Homework wasn't terrible, but includes videos which were required. 4 units tests + a comprehensive final and lowest unit test was dropped, as well as like 3 lowest homeworks. Class was curved, I had a 91% and got an A. Seemed fair, but I didn't have much interaction with him, kind of did my own thing.
It was an online math class, so there's not a lot of interaction with the professor unless you ask him questions. There are videos online for all the teaching and I just used those, I didn't need the textbook at all. He's pretty responsive.
He is super nice!! At the beginning of every class he goes over questions from the homework. He does an attendance quiz everyday, it's just one question from the last lecture. He drops the lowest exam score. If you do the homework and go to class you'll do fine on the exam. The final is comprehensive, save all reviews and tests to study.
Pretty standard online class. Watch videos and do homework online. It's not too bad as long as you stay on top of it. 4 chapter exams plus a final. He drops your lowest test grade, and 3 of your lowest homeworks. All tests were in the testing center, and heavily weighted. Final was worth 25% and all other exams were worth 55% of your grade.
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Scott gives a TON of work, four midterms to be exact, aside from the all of the homework, videos and quizzes he gives out. His final is comprehensive, and it sucks. I studied my butt off, even hired a personal tutor. Avoid this class if you can, or if you are really bad at math.
Stats online was the best choice I've ever made. Lewis has videos available on webassign that teaches you everything you need to know - questions on the homework come straight from the text. He's not pleasant so if you need to reach out to him for anything, he'll probably give you attitude. His class is easy though and his tests are more than fair.
Professor Scott is kind and open to student input. Each section has a 5-10 question quiz. Gives 4 midterms (drops the lowest score) and a comprehensive final. Even if you get an answer wrong, you may get partial credit for showing your work. For the final, study the midterm keys and reviews---he might use a question from a midterm on the final!
I had a good time in this class and I had a lot of fun. A lot of this class was preparing proofs and then presenting them in class so, if you skip too many lectures and don't know what's going on you definitely won't pass. If you want to watch something great ask Dr. Lewis about his circus trick involving exponential. You'll have a good laugh.
This was suppose to be a face to face class, but turned online due to covid. It was awful. His lectures consist of him reading straight from the book, I don't know many people who learn math that way, but I don't. Lots of homework with little feedback.
I have no idea what this professor is like in real life, and that's the problem. Lots of reviewers say that they enjoy his face to face classes and that he does a good job, however I have him during Covid, and it hasn't been pleasant. The "lectures" are just pre recorded YT vids pasted onto canvas, and they are utterly terrible. Its a harsh class
This class feels like a joke. I have learned nothing all semester other than to not care because there is no hope of improvement. He makes you do 20 homework questions per section and only grades 5 on a m/c quiz. His tests have no multiple choice and look nothing like the examples or homework. He posts other people's lecture videos to "teach".
I had read so many amazing reviews about this professor, and was excited to take him. But holy cow, this class is the worst. He literally just posts YouTube videos for each section. I've had to teach myself everything. So, if you are looking for a class where you have to teach yourself all of the material, this professor is for you!
I took his class as a first block course and it was extremely difficult. I am sure it would be an easier class if it was a full semester course. The thing I really disliked about the professor is a lack of communication, he told us what the assignments were but he rarely posted a video of himself explaining the concepts.
At LEAST 108 relevant formulas to memorize, no info on which ones to review on final whatsoever, only resources are videos of him or others reading from the textbook. I'm actually disgusted by this class- it discourages learning and encourages memorization that will vanish as soon as the test is over. I love math- this class almost ruined that.
Professor Lewis is a great professor. In many ways, he values your learning of the material more than he does the letter grade itself. He is more than generous on exams, just make sure that, if nothing else, you write out the entire problem (even if you don't know how to solve it). PARTIAL CREDIT PEOPLE!!! He is a good person who truly cares.
Explains things pretty clearly and is willing to work with you. Tests count for majority of your grade so youll want to study a good amount
Dr. Lewis is very accommodating. I wasn't the best student, some of the subjects just got lost on me, so I often spent time in his office asking questions. He was really nice about it and gave me good examples that helped me improve. I really liked the way he taught, too.
Math 1060 class was online. Dr. Lewis prepared all kinds of resources to help us learn the material. If we had any questions, all we had to do was set up an appointment to talk to him. He gives partial credit on tests. He'd tell you where you went wrong, which was really helped you learn from your mistakes for future assignments and tests.
Nice guy, his teaching can be confusing although. He gives your partial credit on homework and tests which is nice. Definitely have to put in work to get the grade you want.
Scott Lewis is good at teaching in a way that you can understand. The homework can feel really long but is reasonable. He tries so hard at being funny but just isn't, cringe jokes.
Chill guy. Gives partial credit to every problem you try.
Pretty chill. His lectures weren't the most interesting; he didn't really interact with the class all that much. If you want a deeper understanding of the material you'll have to do it yourself
Professor Lewis knows what he's talking about. He's super smart. but, sometimes he misses the easy steps because he assumes we know it, for me, that was hard, but for other it may not be. A lot of homework, but you'll only turn in half of them, but still do them all to get good test scores. Show up daily, missing class is missing whole sections.
Math is a difficult subject, but I really loved prof Lewis! He made a not so fun subject more enjoyable. I was able to do better than I thought as well! Does sometimes pre assume you already know how to do some steps prior to bigger problem, which was a little difficult at times. Only one extra credit opportunity so don't count on it.
Professor lewis has a deep knowledge of math and easily communicates it to you. I am taking him again for every math class possible. He's great just do your homework.
Math is my weakness. Whenever I take math in my semester before I go to that class, I will be like o men; it's math again, or o crap, here we go again. But attending Professor Scott Lewis's math didn't feel like that. If only he teaches calculus this summer, I would take his class again. He is very easy to approach and his willingness to help
Professor Lewis is awesome. Coming from a math major, the course Foundations of Analysis that was taught by him was amazing! He is willing to work with his students, and is always willing to help. This class was proof based, and I never was nervous or intimidated because of the great classroom environment he created. I think he is funny too!
He's willing to work with students who are struggling and is very accessible outside class. He cares about students. Will warn you that you won't enjoy MATH 1080 if you hate tests. Grade breakdown of section I was in: Attendance 5% Homework 15% Exams 60% Final 20%. Overall he is a good guy and good professor. Would recommend for the most part
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! AT ALL! All he does is talk and rush through problems. You ask a question and he will tell you "I will get back to you" and never answer you. He goes SO FAST through math problems and will not go into depth. If you struggle with math (like myself) you will have to teach yourself or go to the math lab and SI for hours!
the class/material itself sucks, but he is a great teacher and does a good job teaching a tough subject. if you can get out of taking this class I would, but if you have to take it then hes a good teacher to take it from
I'm not sure if it's the professor or the course, but the structure of this course was an absolute train wreck. No expectations, and no clarity or direction on how to succeed in this course. I'm spending each unit reading the textbook for hours and teaching myself everything. DO NOT recommend. Also doesn't accept late work, which is the worst.
Don't take this professor for online courses. His lectures don't cover everything on the homework, he skips important steps in between concepts, the examples that he uploads only address a fraction of what you are going to see on the homework. Trig is hard, I don't think it had to be this hard.
I can't speak to this professor's professionalism or communication in an in-person course, but the online course he moderated was an AWFUL experience. He's petty and rude in emails and doesn't try to teach. I've had to fight for my grade and for him to follow correct grading procedures because he was not following the course's syllabus. Terrible.
The class was very involved, attendance frequently required. You had to present at *least* once a week, and you rely on other students' proofs come exam time which I disliked. All feedback was verbal and hard to track down when others did their proofs wrong. Real stickler on grading and will dock points frequently over very minor things.
