Although Mandia is not easy, he deserves to be the highest rated professor!!!
Great Teacher! Prof. Mandia is very helpful. He encourages his students to use their brains, not just memorize something. Prof. Mandia is always available if one needs extra help. Either through the computer or during his office hours.
Cool Funny Prof,Not an easy class, but if you want a good challege, take this prof,Dont expect any gifts in grades from him.If you want a good grade you have to do it the old fasion way, earn it....He gives you all the resources you need from his website.
GREATEST teacher I've ever taken in my long academic career (I have my MA now.) Entertaining, brilliant, helpful, challenging, technologically savvy and the consummate professional. All teachers should emulate this man!
this is not an easy class, but the professor is one of the best i've ever had. you have to work for your grade, but you actually learn something in the end.
Prof. Mandia is great! The class isn't a piece of cake and although I didn't get the best grade in the class, I learned a lot. He's so great and professional but youthful he made me excited to go my 8am weather class!!
my whole suffolk career i never really payed much attention in class, i'd write 1 or 2 good papers and just get by. i didnt get the best grade in this class but i can tell u a lot from what i learned in this class. mandia rocked!!
By far the greatest, I took his intro weather class three years ago at suffolk and I can still tell you about what I learned in his class. If you put in the effort and be vocal about what you don't understand you'll be fine prob. get an A too!
Excellent teacher. Intersting, simple class if you put in a little effort. Hands on weather forecasting was great, and he made it very simple.

Best Prof. I have ever had. Learned a lot, and I didn't mind working my butt of in his class for the A. All three groups beat him in forcasting that semester too!
Wonderful Teacher. My 2 1/2 years at SCCC I never had a better teacher. Was a lot of fun even though it was a tough class. A very fair grader. You have to work for your grade and you HAVE to know how to spell. Loved going to class!
This was one of my favorite classes ever, and I hate science. Don't listen to people who tell you not to take his class, it might be work, but you'll learn and have a lot of fun! Prof. Mandia is funny as hell, too!!! (P.S. do the website)
very hard class. need to do a lot of work. but he is the best professor i have ever had. he challenges you and is a nice guy. very funny, and will help you to no end. its hard but its worth it
a great teacher. I really loved taking weather with him and recommend it to anyone who needs a science class. The class really isnt as hard as it seems because he makes it so interesting. hes really great.
All of the above comments are true. Take Prof. Mandia, you will have an unbelievable experience
The best class that i have ever taken in science related areas. He is just a great guy, there is a lot of work but if you take the time needed there is an A awaiting! TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE XTRA CREDIT! ask about the dog collar insident. very funny!
the class was very hard but he's a good teacher. He tells a lot of jokes that are not really that funny but they still make you laugh. He grades really hard too spelling counts !!!!!! in a science class . But take him youll enjoy his class
I don't get how anyone can complain about spelling counting. So what if it's a science class? You should know how to spell at this stage of your life! By the way, Mandia is great.
He's a great teacher and acts like a real person- he tells funny stories and keeps you interested. The class can be a lot of work, but it's very interesting and informative. Definitely a good class to take if you need a science. He's a great guy!
The class is hard. I have at 3.8 GPA and his tests are extremly detailed and no extra credit at all. He grades hard too.
Ok, there is the key word..."Introduction" to Weather!!!!! He was the WORST professor I have EVER had!!!!! He acts like he is Mr. Big Shot in class, and that everyone is beneath his level. I worked my ass off in that class and he totally knew I was struggling, and did NOTHING to help whatsoever. DO NOT take him if you can avoid it, take astronomy.
Professor Mandia is the best Professor I have had at SCCC. His class is challenging, however, he makes the material extremely interesting and is willing to help anyone who puts forth the effort. If you have a problem, go to him - he is very open. He is a great guy and definitely DOES NOT talk down to the class. He just wants to make you better.
I took his class over the summer, and it was so much fun! The class itself is a little hard, but if you actually study you'll do well! the class was so much fun I miss it. def one of my faves.

im taking this class right now, he is very funny and a great teacher. he knows his stuff. but he is extremely hard. he takes off for grammitcal errors(which sucks). he gives a certain amount of time to take a quiz/test/forecasting. he does like to ramble off into stories, thats kind of cool.
he was the best proffessor i have had a SCCC, he's a tough teacher but a great teacher, i really learned alot in his class and it was fun!!!
By far the WORST professor I have ever taken at SCCC. I've never failed a class before this one. This is not an introduction class. He expects you to know everything. He's extremely arrogant and rude. Tests are IMPOSSIBLE. He grades grammar, includes essays in every test&tests are all fill-in b/c he "doesn't believe in multiple choice"DON'T take him
There is a problem with this guy. Poor teacher and a bad attitude. Steer clear.

He is a poor professor. I didn't enjoy the class and he was unclear.
the guy is an ****. he thinks he knows everything. its called intro to weather for a reason. he thinks everyone should know what he knows. DO NOT TAKE HIM AVOID THE CLASS!!!!
Entertaining, intelligent, challenging, FAIR & helpful with high standards. Previous raters are obviously moronic bird brains who don't know what college is all about. Their scores are simply retribution for obvious failure in the course.
terrible experience and i got a B
This guy is a total *** whole (spelled wrong so my post wont be deleted). I took a class in weather and this guy teaches web design. If I wanted that I would have take a web design class. Plus, this guy has not one oz of aesthetic ability. All his sites look very mechanical and all pretty much the same. Dont walk away from this guy, RUN!
Interesting, way easier than bio or chem, easy(er)A A very nice guy 2
i dont understand how anybody can say anything bad about professor mandia. hes a great guy, great sense of humor, and definately helps you with everything.he's clear with everything he does. one of my favorite professors. i wasnt to intrested in weather before taking this class, and now its one of my favorties!

I typically don't post to these things but it is obvious some raters before me are just dumb students who don't like Prof. Mandia because he actually makes you think. This is COLLEGE - not kindergarten. He is very funny, helps students all of the time, and has everything you need posted on his Web site. You don't even need to buy a text!

Great guy, good class. subaru sux like Red sux jk.

hot pepper in ralph machio's salad
Overly pretentious, assumes everyone is following him, makes assignments/tasks/lectures exceptionally more completed than they need to be. He is also not a fair grader, but is a huge fan of himself. Why; I'm not quite so sure.
good teacher, trys to keep class entertaining, packs in some extra work at the end of the semester, no txt book just a small packet not expensive at all, little homework, need to study for tests. fair grader.
really nice guy but tough course. you really need to study hard for the last few tests. make sure you understand how to do the forecasts and do the homework!
rough class but he is very helpful and is fair across the board also i'm learning alot not just science but alot of interesting stuff

A very fair professor. Hard grader, nice guy.
OK first off to all the people who are bashing Mr. M its not his fault you cant pass a college class. All because he grades you like a college student should dont hate all over him. Not many teacher will make a actual useful website for their students to use. And he is very open in his conversations which saves the class from 3 hours of monotony
Fair, funny. Great teacher, master of the analogy to help students understand topics. Will not answer questions day of the test.
Very hard grader but also tries to make it as easy as possible. I am not a good science student and I am not failing every test. You just have to study hard and ask questions. Good teacher overall.
Has high standards. Grades grammar and spelling, but we're college students, You should know how to spell and form a sentence. Have to study and pay attention,No getting around that. Gives you essay question before the test. No textbook. Very interesting, funny and knows his stuff. Very fair. Tough grader! You have to study!
very hard teacher. Hard to understand the topic
I would not recommend taking this class. You have to be extremely intellegent to take this class. Everything has to be perfect in this class there is no room for error and the material is very unclear. The tests are unbearbale to do and if you are not a genius in this course you will fail. I would not advise students to take this course.
Mandia's awesome! Very fun class, isn't the easiest, but he explains the notes very thoroughly which makes it easier to understand.NEED to study to pass.Always avail for extra help.Fair grader.Your always aware of where your standing with your grades. My fav course this sem. Labs are so much fun, you'll never want to be absent! GO YO WEATHA!! :)
Just had him for 8 week summer class. He can be a bit picky with certain grading, but he also gives fair warning of this before hand. I ended up with a C for the class, and to be honest, i feel thats exactly what i deserved. talks alot bout unrelated school topics, but who really complains about that, keeps class interesting, an You must study
great prof. uses a ton of helpful/amusing analogies, tells jokes, makes class interesting & will help you if you have problems. tests are a little tough, knowing a lot of science prior is an advantage, but if you do the homework packets you should be okay. he managed to make a 4 and a half hour night class tolerable, that says something :)
Outstanding professor, I highly recommended! Nice guy, always upbeat. He is a master of analogies; this really helped with understanding the subject at hand. The tests and quizzes were a little challenging, but fair. Doing the homework packets and utilizing the extra help notes from his website is highly recommended and helpful.
Good professor. He is a rough grader, but fair. Pretty good about keeping attention in a relatively dull class. He goes on tangents alot.
what an extremely arrogant stuck up man. he thinks hes gods gift to the world. from day one he was already giving me that nasty look. i work hard keep quiet and mind my own business. i love weather itself but somehow he has this talent for complicating the whole class. i never saw a teacher with his grading system. its absurd.
I would not recommend this teacher to anyone. The tests are very hard. I learned more about the teachers life then anything in this weather class.
Avoid if possible. He puts too much time into his website and not enough in teaching the material on it. His tangents can be unbearable. Sometimes it seemed we only had 30 minutes for notes. He made it very difficult to learn, and offered very little help. He just doesn't seem to care about seeing his students succeed.
For an Intro class Mandia took it way to seriously and his grading was completely absurd. I mean he was really nice funny guy, and tried to help as much as he could, but he was a little on the arrogant side. Although, I must say he did have tho most random and interesting facts.
Professor Mandia is a really nice man that teaches his subject well. He expects proper grammar on tests, which makes sense at this level. He also gives detailed notes on his websites that you can study from and all answers will be there or in his homework. As long as you do the work, you will not just pass, but excel in his course.
In my opinion the comments below which use the word "arrogant" are sopt-on. Arrogance sums it up. The best way for me to describe my experience with this guy is Woof Woof--what a dog of a person and course of experience. Arrogance--yes--thats it
Prof Mandia is great. All of his lessons are interesting and he is very helpful. If you apply yourself and study his study guides online, you will do well. He expects college level grammer and correct spelling, which is acceptable since you are in college! He gives tons of opportunities for extra credit and extra help. Plus, he makes the lab fun!!!
okay, first of all, he is a fantastic professor! Yes, he does care about grammar and spelling, but every college professor should, you're not in high school. He makes his lessons & labs very fun & exciting and gives you plenty of chances to gain extra points! He expects his students to work hard, but every professor should. He's awesome :)
i do not see how some of these ratings are positive. of course if youre good at the class youre gonna give him a fantastic rating. either that or theres a lot of suck ups on here. so for those who are opening thier mouths about others posting negatively just remember that unlike yourself, people do have a hard time with the class and this man
I had professor Mandia over the summer 2009. Before I had his class I thought 4 1/2 hours in a science class! But it turn out not to be bad at all. Professor Mandia was an entertaining teacher, although talking non stop in every class about the Yankees or Tiger Woods was extremely annoying!! I paid to learn, not know what the Yankees score is.
Fun Class
Scott Mandia is a great guy with a real passion for what he does, and who he is. He creates and controls a productive, comfortable & fun learning environment. He is inspiring, which is an important quality way too many teachers lack. He does a great job to prepare his students to get the grades they want. Also has a great sense of humor.
He gave me an A and I'd give him one too! He's the best teacher I ever had at Suffolk. He explains everything and uses a website with links to extra help and answers all of your questions. He is helpful and passionate about his job. His tests are not easy, so you have to put in some effort, but it's not unreasonable. I recommend taking his class
Unclear, unhelpfull, yuk...
he is great at what he does but i took intro to meteorology w him and it was much harder to understand than i would think. you really need to study and understand the material to get a decent grade. alot of the people in my class studied like crazy but still kept failing quizes and tests. don't take it if you aren't interested in the subject!
if your not a science major and dont need this class dont even bother, 99% of the time he is talking about his kids or dumb ways to make bets off your friends. There is no inbetween with this professor and NO such thing as multipule choice. Its his way or no way. I DO NOT recommend this teacher at all !!
He should not be teaching he is more like a scientist then a teacher. your expected to know everything already by the way he teaches things. Constantly falls off topic, but then he expects to you have understood all of his material taught. He does not seem very interested in actually helping you pass. Don't take him if you don't have to!
Unfortunately I have to agree with the poor ratings. He's a nice guy but a scatter brain when teaching which makes it hard to follow him. Tests are extremely hard and no extra help. Just a class web page he made with extra help notes? How about earning that salary and stop the global warming rants?! Avoid this guy or you're going to need a W slip!
I found him to be extremely helpful. His style is straightforward. The websites covers EVERYTHING on his exams. He expects to you study. This is college, so that shouldn't be a problem. I got an A in this class.
Ok, Mandia is awesome! I think I got about 40 extra credit points just for going to like two after school seminars. Gives so much extra credit and your grade is what you get. The notes are exactly what is on the test! Know his mission statement for bonus points! Talks about sports and is entertaining. I walked away knowing the adiabatic proce
You know the old saying, if don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all"? Enough said. Avoid this guy if you can, the negative ratings/comments here are pretty accurate so read those to get an idea of this nightmare. "High Standards Inspires Superior Results"? I agree but too bad he doesn't follow that when instructing a class.
Mandia is one of the oddest people ever but VERY understanding. He's a good guy def has favorites. Go to his class and study his extra help online and everythings word for word. NO HOMEWORK. but doesn't believe in multiple choice so everythings short answer. If you do good in labs you can get alot of x cred for final.
Great Teacher
One of the most intelligent teachers I have ever had, very nice to his students and makes the class fun
Utterly boring and useless. This professor thinks he teaches at Harvard or something. Not only are the concepts hard, his teaching style is hard to follow. Do NOT take his MET 101. Worst teacher I've ever had and I'm on my 3rd year
Tests are extremely hard. This is suppose to be a class for non science major but he teaches it as if it was a science class at YALE. He's arrogant and boring. Every minute is torture. Never take this professor.
Very nice man.Tries to be funny sometimes, he knows his stuff, has some oppinions about climate change, the class would have been easier if I studied more often, he pretty much hands us the material and it's our responsability to learn it! I look forward to going to this class every time, since he is the most lively teacher I had this semester!
Tests are extremely difficult. An obviously insecure professor who is an unfair grader. Never take any of his classes, unless you like depression.
Absolutely arrogant. To the point of being annoying. A complete scatter brain, and yes a very insecure professor. People! please avoid him. For your sake.
His class was very straight foward and I'm willing to bet that the people complaining weren't willing to put in the work. He basically spoon feeds you the information on his website- all you need to do is study. Yes, he expects good grammar and spelling, but you're in college. Just study and stop complaining! This guy was great, in my opinion.
useless and arrogant
Class was ridiculously hard even when studying as much as humanly possible thanks for screwing up my GPA definatly take this professor if you love working your hardest for no reason at all
Take it from me. I have a 4.0 GPA and i work very hard in ALL my classes. And yet this class is the most senseless and ridiculous class i've ever had. The professor is boring and arrogant. He grades you on grammar, last time I checked this was a sci class for non science majors. Not to mention he's too in to himself. Save yourself the pain
Extremely difficult to understand and very unclear with his thoughts. He goes off topic too much, talking about senseless things. His class is a complete nightmare.
Everyone complaining is just lazy!!!!Like someone else said he spoon feeds you the information! There isn't even a textbook for this class, he made his own chapters and printed them out with fill in the blank answers as homework.VERY EASY.Info is straight forward,he's very funny and EXTREMELY NICE!He makes the labs a competition for extra points.
In every class there is always people that do well, regardless of difficulty. Theres no denying that he is easy on certain aspects. However I for one will agree with the MAJORITY of complaints. He's a unfair, and a complete scatter brain.
arrogant and self-important. not nearly as well informed on climate change as he thinks. he should take a teaching course & maybe a refresher on being humble. he reviews this site and removes unpleasant reviews, so i doubt this posting will stay very long.
Extremely difficult, sets the bar high to match his mission statement. No mult. choice tests, hard to pass because everything is short answer. I think he's unfair b/c he takes points off for grammar. It's SCIENCE not Eng, this can bring your grade down dramatically. HE thinks everyone's edu. is at his level. My advice take a different science cours
If you're looking for an easy science class, keep searching. This professor is very difficult, no multiple choice EVERY test and quiz are short answer, so if you didn't study you're screwed. But he's funny and nice and gives SO many extra credit oppurtunities, and more than willing to help in office hours. Nice guy, not an easy professor though.
I did very well in this class. However, that had nothing to do with Mandia. He is terrible & self-important. He talks about his climate change research (non-existent)& his accomplishments. He has given a few lectures and done a few interviews, but he never says or presents anything new....just repeats the work of others. HE WILL REMOVE THIS POST!!
Mandia is a great guy, he is funny and loves to joke around. the class is fun, labs are fun also. Much better than any other science class for sure. Extra credit is always available. You do have to study so don't think it will be easy. But all these bad comments are not true. Mandia is GREAT
Really nice funny guy who wants his students to do well, but a little too smart for his own good. He doesn't realize its a science class for non majors. Its a good class just be prepared to have to put the hard work in
Great teacher, really nice. Gives lots of extra credit, helps a lot. Really funny, and interesting. He is the King of cheesy jokes, but good teaching methods.
If you must satisfy a science credit, take someone else. Mandia's class is very hard. I have a different professor now and i can see how difficult Mandia really is.
Great professor. If you do the homework and pay attention, you'll be fine. He's very understanding and will help you out if needed. Group work is fun and he let us compete for extra credit.
He doesn't do multiple choice tests. The material is very easy if you study. I was the type that never had to study and got A's and B's but it didn't work in his class. He makes the class interesting, and he is very helpful if you need help. If you are really interested in meteorology take his class. If not then you will not do well.
prof. Mandia is extremely smart and passionate about his field as well spreading his knowledge. He expects much from his students so test are and he is an even harder grader. You may feel that your grades are harsh but you will amazed on how much you learn about the world around you.
GREAT professor. very helpful and passionate. definitely worth the 8am class
Prof. Mandia was on the ball. He came prepared each and every day to teach not only about climate change, but how it was going to affect each one of our lives. He showed a genuine interest in not only the material, but also for us as students. Treated everybody with respect, and got respect in return. As mentioned, his class is worth getting up for.
Prof. Mandia is without a doubt the greatest science teacher I've ever had. He is always prepared for class, he has numerous resources available for students if they need help. Wether it be online notes or a one on one meeting. His visual examples make difficult concepts very easy to understand. Also he is a great joke teller.
Great professor, was a hard grader but everything was simple and straight forward. I would take his class again! :)
If you need a science credit I would take a different class. He's an awesome guy very funny, but his class is very difficult. All his test are written out no multiple choice.
Great professor. Average grade but my own fault. If you need a science credit take one or both of his courses. HE IS NOT AN EASY A PROFESSOR! You MUST do the work, but you WILL become a better student after his class. He challenges you to do better. That's what makes a real professor.I have become a science major because of him.
He truly believes that he is the greatest and most insightful scientist of all time! Oh my goodness is he WRONG! Avoid this self-important dolt!
Most ridiculous class i've ever taken. He thinks everyone is a scientist, and english major. He also believes his class is the only one you are taking. Be prepared for a term paper, and a summary article every week. non-multiple choice question tests. No work you ever do will ever be good enough so be prepared to get a low grade in-definently.
hardest professor I've ever had. very hard grader. tests aren't that bad but they are short answer and your answer is never good enough. takes points off for grammar which affects your grade dramatically. i wish i never took him. definitely recomend not taking this professor
He's gorgeous to look at but man is a tough grader. Currently failing his class but I like him as a person... As a teacher not so much.I was told that this would be an easy class from my counselor, so wrong. May the odds ever be in your favor.
Stop complaining! You will only fail the course simply if you do not study and do not ask questions. This man is passionate about what he is teaching and wants to share it with his students. He encourages questions AND extra credit. I'll admit the tests can be difficult, but not if you take good notes and study. Piece of cake, wonderful professor.
Does not teach well at all. It feels as if he expects you to know as much as he does about climate change/weather before even entering the class. A large majority of the notes are vague and even if you attempt to ask questions you are made to feel ignorant, and explanations leave you feeling more lost then when you started.
If you think college is something that shouldn't be challenging don't take this course. If you want to learn something and are up for putting in the effort you should take this course. I guarantee the people complaining did not pay attention in class and did not put in the time for studying. I consider him to be an above average professor.
He should go back to school and learn how to teach.I study all the time and still don't grasp what he wants us to know AVOID THIS CLASS AND MET103
Best professor I've EVER had. Takes points off for grammar? It's a college class-if you don't like that, get out.Not a lot of work if you plan ahead. He's incredibly passionate, and it made me more excited about the topics.Would recommend this class to anybody looking for either a science credit, or to enhance their understanding of climate science.
AVOID this class the odds are against you and he thinks he is the bees knees. Every test is short answer and he is a rough grader. Study hours for tests and still can't grasp the details, he can't teach in a way to relate to the students and he thinks he is teaching to scientists.
It's a college-level course. The workload is appropriate with that. Show up to class and put the effort in you'll do fine. If this is your first year of college I would suggest staying away but if not you should be able to handle it. He is very smart and knowledgable, and he cares about what he's talking about. Very nice guy.
He's a good teacher who wants to make sure you understand what you are learning and not just memorize a simple yes/no or true/false answer. All of his tests were short answer except one was a fill in the blank. It was a challenge for me but if you take the time and study you will do fine. Plus he gives quite a bit of extra credits.
It is NOT an easy A so if you want one don't waste your time. He is very helpful and insightful. He wants students to do well. I started the class trying to decide if I wanted to major in meteorology. I came out of his class knowing more than I could have imagined. Study hard you'll do well. If I could take his class again I would. He is great.
I dont understand what all the hubbub is about. He's a great guy and i actually learned a lot from this class. Very straight forward tests, and he's into what he does so he knows what he's talking about. This was one of the few classes i actually looked forward to go to. Just study!
Horrible professor. Nothing taught is whats on the test. Global warming freak all he talks about is the interviews he does. Tests are harder than what I took in Physics.
The professor is very knowledgeable in his field of expertise. After this class, you will learn how hard forecasting weather can be. The labs are difficult at times. The quizzes are somewhat hard. No homework check, but still do the homework it will help on the quizzes.
Do not take this class if your just trying to take an easy elective. It is not an easy A, his tests are difficult all short answer, dont get me wrong he knows a lot but hes too serious about this elective based class.
The material is not easy but does give a lot of extra credit opportntiy. Quizes are the hardest part.
I liked meteorology before I took this class, but I really did not like this prof. at all. He is very self-important, confused, confusing and rather boring. I learned the material on my own. Thanks to him, I am no longer interested in meteorology!
Not a good professor. Extremely difficult. Expects you to know grammar on the test or else it will hurt your grade even if you the answer to the correct, you have to remember the exact answer. For crying out loud this isnt english class. dont take this professor.
Professor Mandia is a brilliant man, and very funny. He knows a lot about global climate change and weather. His tests are all short answer but its not difficult if you take the time to study. It's not the easiest class in the world, but if you put in the footwork an A is possible. Overall great teacher
Study the quizzes and tests and you will do well on Mid Term and Final. Labs take some group effort but the competition is fun. Professor is very approachable and wants you to actually learn the science behind weather and forecasting. If your committed to doing well, the recipe for success is clear in this class. Textbook is $25. Mandia is the man.
The worst teacher I have ever had. He does not teach you anything in class because he is too busy showing you his twitter and talking about sports and his kids. The notes he gives don't tell you anything because they are all the same graphs and videos of John Stewart. He is the most unfair grader I have ever had. Avoid at all costs.
Do not take him! He is the worst teacher ever, gives way too much papers, you do a paper every two weeks from the start till end. His tests are hard as can be and do not relate to notes what so ever. All he does is talk about his twitter and his life, he is unfair and doesn't even care if your failing, or even try to help you. I regret taking him.
He seems like a nice guy but most of class time is spent on forcasting and all you get is a few bonus points on the final if you do well. He's teat are unnecessarily hard and he takes off points for the littlest things. Don't take his class- it's not worth it. A lot of work for barely any pay off.
This is a very hard class and a very hard subject. Although the material and his tests are hard, he is a fair grader and gives many extra credit opportunities. If you give this class time and patience you can pass or even get an A. He is also very helpful and will give any student as much help as they need. He is very passionate about his work.
I'm an art major and just took his class to fill in my lab science requirement. I had low expectations, but wow! He was great. His notes and lectures were VERY clear, and he taught everything that we were tested on. A lot of my class failed because they didn't pay attention. He puts his lectures online too and I used that and my notes to study.
Just dont take him
He gives very all essay tests. Does not tell you what to study. Very hard grader. I do not suggest taking him
After experiencing Professor Mandia this previous semester, I was genuinely shocked by his below average rating. He is a highly intelligent, thorough and great guy. It's an easy A if you apply yourself and follow the directions. His class tackled controversial subjects in unbiased ways and presented strictly facts.A really great teacher!
He is a very nice guy. I hate to write this but he was not a great professor. There is no multiple choice and he grades very harshly. Very kind harder and seems to care, but most of the class was doing bad. I don't advise you to take him.
Professor Mandia is a great teacher. He comes off as a little pompous but is a really nice guy. He expects you to work hard for your grade, and it shows on his exams. You need to be ABSOLUTELY specific in your work to show him you know the material. Definitely not a good choice if you want to coast through and get an easy A.
The worst professor I ever come across. His class is an elective class, yet he acts like its a major one. Assigns a lot of work. Your papers he grades as if he's a english teacher. Short answers on the test, yet he wants you to write a paragraph basically and takes points off if you miss 1 thing on the question- EVEN THOUGH ITS CORRECT. STAY AWAY!!
Horrible Professor. I wish I read his reviews before taking this elective class. Not worth the 3 credits or your time. Tests are graded unfairly, forget a rubric and he will not accept your homeworks or term paper. AND, if you staple your paper incorrectly to him because he's OCD, points are taken off. Like really?
DON'T TAKE HIM. Very self-important. His quizzes contain no multiple choice, just short answer, and he grades the harshest I've ever seen, even harsher than English professors. All he does for the most part is talk about his personal life. The counselors think he is great, as I was told to take him. What a huge mistake! Stay Clear!
This is an elective for non sci majors but the prof. acts otherwise. Very hard class, and grader. Prof. talks about himself more than any1 I know. He mentions not 2 listen or believe the reviews on this site, do listen!! I wish I read these prior 2 taking his course. And, get ready 2 wait until class ends.. he makes you wait till the very last 2nd!
Mandia is a nice guy. His class is extremely difficult, but not impossible. He gives opportunity for success by dropping the lowest quiz grade, and offering up to 40 points of extra credit on quizzes. His quizzes are very difficult and he is a really harsh grader. All of his notes are online, you definitely need to devote a lot of time to his class
I will be brief and direct; AVOID THIS GUY.
I am not rating this because I didn't do well and am being spiteful. I blame 50 of my bad grade on myself and 50 on him. He wastes the beginning of class going off topic. He talks about his "success" way to much. He doesn't teach but reads from slides. He must expect that you came to SCCC only taking his class and not 4 other classes. Poor Teacher.
He was the greatest! Many office hours and he will preview HW and term papers before they are due to improve the grade. Very passionate about climate change and funny. Yes, he is a tough grader but exams are short answer and mult choice and you can skip 2 short answers. Bad reviews likely from students not showing or texting in class. Lots of them.
Knows what he's talking about, and knows how to explain it well. Sometimes gets distracted and goes off-topic, but it's always interesting and he's got a good sense of humor. Very reasonable; willing and able to see both sides of various issues, except human-caused climate change. There isn't any debating to be done about proven scientific fact.
Professor Mandia's MET101 class wasn't the easiest but he gives students lots of opportunities to do well. His quizzes fall into the tough but fair category. He adequately covers all the information that will appear on them (quizzes are only 15% of the grade anyway) He is also really willing to help you do well, just put in some effort.
Very interesting course, very clear presentation of course material. Fair grading of all quizzes and tests. If you attend classes you should have no problem comprehending material. Professor provides motivation along with an interesting plethora of material.
Mandia is a professional in every sense of the word, he was never late for class, his demeanor and appearance was at all times well above the standard of other instructors at SCCC. His classes are more about the work YOU do. He is very precise but he is also exceedingly fair, you get what you earn in life get used to it. I would take him again.
Good luck if you take this Professor in any class. I've never encounter a Professor who is so full of himself, seems to enjoy people doing poorly, unfair, and lectures are insanely boring. Half my class failed the tests!!!! I wouldn't be surprised if he was writing the positive rates on this site.
Mandia demonstrates excellent clarity and intonation when he speaks. However his notes aren't sufficient for doing well on the exams. He expects you to know the material from your engagement in the class; which would be fine if the test questions weren't so specific. He addresses this and has no intentions of changing. Not an easy A.
Awful class. I worked hard to get a passing grade. He seems like he enjoys students struggling, doesn't cut them a break. Def, a hard class.
Horrible professor. He is so full of himself and he enjoys people failing. His classes are elective classes, not required. Every single test is short answer and he thinks he is an English professor. Grades extremely unfair, and only talks his kids and his social life. Probably pays the counslers to promote him, because they said he was amazing.
Professor Mandia is hilarious if get his puns. some students start keeping a tally and ranked how funny/ rediculus his puns were. Exams are short answer. just undersand how i happens and done. All lecture notes are available online and all I did was study his power points and I got an A.
Professor Mandia is a good professor. If you need a good three credit science course I would recommend his Meteorology 103 class. He is has very clear guidelines and rules for his papers and the amount of tests you take will depend upon how many of the chapters he is able to cover in a semester.
Excellent teacher, clear criteria to follow for a well-deserved A. Don't pull any BS in terms of attendance, sit close to the front away from your phone and you'll do fine. The class is incredibly interesting and could even be inspiring depending on who you are. You're paying for it so pay the guy the respect to hear what he has to tell you.
Worst Professor i have ever had, awful grader, thinks he his the best thing since sliced bread and uses up a lot of time in class talking about his personal life and then rushing through the lectures. AVOID HIM it will be the best thing you never do
Had Mandia spring 2016. the class was ok, I just did not like the guy. He seems pretty impressed with himself, & that is a major turn-off. I think he is adequate, he is not the worst prof. I've ever had, but I would not suggest you take him. He certainly enjoys speaking about himself, so if you are into that type of thing, maybe you will like him
Im an art major and had to take a science class, and i honestly loved Mandia. he was so chill, and a very fair grader. if youre not a science person, its gonna be a hard class, but he basically hands everything to you. just pay attention and take notes.
Prof mandia is a very nice guy and gives you plenty of opportunities to pass. Just listen and do the home work and you will pass
Don't take him. His classes are horrible. No multiple choice on tests, only short answer. The toughest grader I've ever stumbled across in my life. And he very full of himself. If you want to pass, don't take his classes!
Not an easy class. Gives a paper every 2 weeks from start to end. Doesn't teach but reads slides. Gives short answer tests, and your answers are never enough-he takes points off for grammar. If you want an easy A, definitely don't take. But if you like a prof. that talks about himself a lot then take his class.
Had him for climate change. He knows exactly what he is talking about. Uses PowerPoints for each lecture. No need for textbook which is a plus. Gives four homework assignments which help boost grade and a term paper. Tests are fair and cover exactly what is said in lecture.
One of the smartest professors at Suffolk!
Professor Mandia is the best professor I've ever had. Extremely passionate about what he does which makes the class interesting and informative. He is an amazing professor and a great person who is always willing to answer questions. He is the reason why I am now majoring in Envirnmental Science. Definitely take his class if you have the chance!
Absolutely a terrible teachers, 8 short answer questions on every test and the whole course depends on them. He DOESNT GIVE A REVIEW SHEET so youre basically guessing what you think might be on the test from his 100 page lecture notes that he tells you to print out every week. This guy is horrible 18 out of 30 kids got a 60 or lower on the last T.
This class was interesting but Prof Mandia makes you work hard for your grade. His tests consists of eight short answer questions, makes you do six and twenty multiple choice questions. Gives these homework assignments to help boost your grades; but the man gets sidetracked very easily and brags about himself a lot.
To sum it all up, save yourself the pain and DON'T TAKE THIS MAN!!!
Worst professor I have ever had.
I took Mandia's class a couple of years ago. After reading the reviews here I was hesitant but after taking the course I can say he was a great professor. If you read like you're supposed to and study, you'll definitely do well. He cares, and encouraged me when I was nervous about the class. I recommend taking his class, to see for yourself.
i hated this guy. kinda rude, doesn't really care for his students or their success his homeworks okay, but he's very tough with grading and rips you apart when it comes to them. i really never fully grasped the gist of the class because the classes were cancelled a lot because of weather. very opinionated, doesn't simplify his words.
I took this class because it was the only science class that didn't require a lab Mandia made the class very interesting with his lectures. I had failed the first two lecture tests but was determined to get through the class. He was happy to set time aside during his office hours to help. Follow his power points, ASK QUESTIONS, and you'll be fine.
I DON'T recommend this professor!! Very confusing class.
Professor Mandia might have been one of the worst professors I've ever had. I took MET 103 for the second five-week summer session at sccc. He's the harshest grader and instead of correcting you; he just says "no" and rolls his eyes. Also, he spends way too much time boasting about himself. Don't take him.
Professor Mandia will not like you if you challenge him. He thinks he's right about everything. Hates religion and talks too much politics. Overall not a good professor. Would not take him again.
Professor Mandia is too opinionated and doesn't care too much about what his students think. There are no review sheets for exams. His tests don't exactly match with power point slides. Too much useless information for his exams.
Global climate change is something I was interested in before taking this class. Professor Mandia is a really tough grader, provides no review sheets, and his power point slides have too many distracting graphics that aren't useful to study for exams. I don't recommend him for future students.
I was going to give him backstage Halsey tickets for his wife, him, and two children but he passed me with a D.
having signed up to take a class from this professor remains one of my biggest regret ever. I will never take any class with him again, would rather take that class at a different school and bring it to Suffolk if he were to be the only option at Suffolk.
This was easily the best course I've taken at SCCC and Prof. Mandia is the reason why. I will not say it is an easy course, it is not. Its a 4-credit fully online Lab course. However, Prof Mandia, offers tutoring sessions, and it very responsive to emails anytime of day and weekends. I would highly recommended this course.
I used to be extremely interested in the topic of climate change, until Mandia took all the joy out of it. He is not good at lecturing but that's all he does. His slides have WAY too much information and too vaugue. Combined with his lectures, textbook, and 5 hours of studying(seriously), I still ended up with a C on the test. DO NOT RECCOMEND.
A great professor and person in general! His lectures are very interesting, and he makes the material applicable to our everyday lives. I highly recommend this class! There is a bit of work though--3 homework projects that are due throughout the semester, but they're given at the beginning of the year so you have plenty of time!
Awesome professor. Really cares for his students and wants them to succeed. You do have to work for your grade, so dont be lazy, but overall great teacher. I would take him again
Not a pleasant experience at all.
I took this class excited to learn about the topic. It was the worst choice i have ever made. I would never take this class again. He doesnt really help you understand the mistakes you made, and doesnt help you out much at all.
Do not take this class!!!! He gave me a 0 for working together with another student on a HW when he never said that we could not. When I asked him if there was any sort of extra credit I could do to help me get rid of the 0 he just shut me down with a hard no. Easily the worst teacher Ive ever taken
Easily one of my favorite professors. He makes class fun(despite the fact that the topic of climate change can be depressing). The entire semester is online, so you can start homework weeks early. He always has office hours and notifies students if they change. He is a tough grader, but if you do the work and study, you can easily pull an A or B.
I dont understand these reviews. Professor mandia is a very chill and layed back professor. There is 5 tests but he gives review sheets and will answer any questions you have for 10 minutes before the test! Cool guy, cares about what he does. I look forward to his class everyday
I dont understand why there are so many negative reviews about him. Tests are very easy if you study like youre supposed to, and he is more than willing to help if you go to his office hours with questions. Its college so he isnt going to chase after you. Just dont expect to pass by being on your phone all class.
Mandia is a very passionate guy about his subject, but it often blinds him into being unfair. He puts way too much weight on the homework assignments, which if you miss more then one instant fail. He also gives very hard exams, and WILL NOT wait the extra 5 min to let you finish it even if it's the difference between passing, and failing.
Mandia takes great pride in what he teaches. With that said, he is a great professor. He does give short answer exams, but is not out to get you. If you study, the exams can be very easy. For those that decide to party and not study, dont say he gave you the grade. You earn your grade based on effort.
Honors climate change was a very interesting class. You will have to work for your grade but it isn't that hard. Around 5 homework's and 5 tests graded evenly. One cumulative final that is made up of all previous test multiple choice questions. Short answer for tests are given months in adv. Mandia is a very good prof and answers all questions.
Okay so let me start off by saying professor Mandia is literally my favorite professor at SCC. He actually made me become aware of the environment and its concern. His class, along with numerous other class members that agree, was so much fun! Not only did he make the material so fun by cracking us up with his fun jokes. I highly recommended 100%
I usually get A's in all my classes but this one was a B+ because I had trouble understanding his lectures. No book needed, read and re-read his lectures, post in discussion if you need help/he responds! Tests and exam are based off lectures and previous quizzes. I would take him again, I just needed to re-read and focus more.
teaching method is basically a bunch of slideshows that youre supposed to memorize for a test. i learned absolutely nothing. hes pretty serious about attendance too i was allowed one absence. also if you plan on studying or doing homework with someone, dont because hell call it plagiarism and fail you.
If your a meteorology Major take this Professor. Really knows what hes talking about and makes thing simpler to understand. Homework is not necessary and labs are fun and are not too difficult.
Mandia turned out to be my favorite professor this semester and Im really sad I dont have him next semester. Hes always trying to lighten the mood with funny jokes and Kahoot! quizzes. His lectures are always fun and he does not grade harshly. Its easy to do well if you do your work and pay attention. You will not regret taking his class!
Prof Mandia is not only an amazing teacher but is an amazing person. He truly cares for his students and sitting before such an intelligent person was truly inspirational. His homework and tests are easy because he ensures everyone understands the topic. He has an h-index of 4 ;) ,btw. Warning, everyday starts with a dad joke so be warned haha
Asked him at the beginning if the semester if he would be willing to work with me as i am not a good student, never asked for handouts just extra credits. He said yes and never followed through. Also he spends more time showing the class his twitter beef about climate change instead of actually teaching. If u want someone who teaches, its not him
Overall, a pretty mediocre professor. His lectures were pretty dull and every lab was the same. He wouldn't really help out anyone in the class and would get annoyed if you did ask a question. His quizzes and tests are pretty tough too. Even with heavy studying, i could just barely get a B on them. Avoid this guy
Prof. Mandia's online use of Blackboard is exceptional. This was definitely a hard class, but his teaching model is amazing. Every other week you have a discussion and a quiz and on the opposite week you have a lab. He is very clear with directions and all you need is in his lectures. Book was req, helped with extra reading but minimal use. A++
This professor is very harsh and not helpful to students. Uninspiring. Would not recommend or take him ever again.
Wow this professor is utterly horrible. He does not care about his students and he is extremely tough with his grading. Never again!
More interested in bragging about his Twitter account than in his students' needs; zero-tolerance policy re: late assignments, does not care what the circumstances are; 1 late due to family emergency, wouldn't accept work, resulted in final A being a B . Probably got picked on a lot as a kid and is trying to make up to his ego for it. Skip him.
GREAT PROFESSOR, he made time to address ALL MY QUESTIONS. Class was ALL online & did not require heavy reading. You get the grade you work for not a class to wait till last minute to do the work. Discussion participation is a MUST, but if you follow his rubrics you are def getting an A. Labs were a bit harder than quizzes. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
The professor put a lot of effort to enliven the information by making it fun & funny. Don't expect to breeze through his courses, effort to understand the material is a must but follow all the instructions & examples he provides and you'll do fine. He gives a lot of input on all work submitted and genuinely cares for his craft and students!
I really enjoyed this professor and the course. Very few assignments that truly get you thinking! Very fair guy as well. I definitely recommend!
With professor Mandia you definitely need to pay attention to his grading criteria because he knows exactly what he wants written. Timed exams and bi-weekly scientist research writings.
The professor is a heavy grader, will give out hard quizzes (even for online classes), and is very harsh on any mistakes that you may have made on labs. Online discussion boards are not engaging as it follows a same formula and word count every week. No matter how hard you try it's never enough with this professor and it's frustrating. Don't do it
I'm really not sure why Prof. Mandia has so many bad reviews on here. MET103 was really interesting. I left his class able to say I actually learned something. He's well respected in his field but managed to make the material easy to understand. There were 6 exams, including the final, and 4 homework assignments. He's a really nice & likable guy.
Professor Mandia is a nice person, very little assignments. The class is sad but important, slightly political but nothing insane. Class isnt required, all lectures are online. The class was fine, a little uncomfortable at times, he would go on tangents.
Decided to take this class in the summer thinking it would be easy, it was the hardest class ever. Too many assignments not enough time. Lots of videos and notes but none of the information is on the tests. Labs were very difficult and time consuming. The class was asynchronous and the professor was unhelpful. No extra credit assignments.
Professor Mandia is engaged in his class. He provides his students with the opportunity to achieve high grades. He is very responsive to requests for guidance. He works diligently to ensure his students have an enlightening semester. He invests more effort into his work than he expects of his students. I recommend selecting his Meteorology course.
I thought he was a pretty good professor, but the only downside is he is a pretty tough grader and there are a decent amount of assignments. Doable though
Professor Mandia is an approachable, caring, and engaged professor. Introduction to Meteorology was my favorite course because he made it enlightening and fun. He created his (FREE) curriculum! His lectures are interesting, interactive, and enjoyable. To succeed, read and follow his instructions. Study the lectures and quizzes to finish strong.
Best teacher I have ever known. I would take his classes a million times if I could. As long as you do the work and follow along you will be successful in his class. If you are struggling he would be more then happy to work with you.
For you're sake, don't take his class online, in person he may be much better, but it has been nothing but a headache. Labs are ridiculously hard, time-consuming, and involving for someone who knows little to nothing. Super tough grader, will knock points for anything you can think of/he can find. Super conceited and just overbearing in every way
All work is online even in person classes. He is a quirky and a funny caring guy. Lectures can be dry sometimes but his personality makes up for it. Overall an easy course if you stay on top of the work and material. Not sure why he has so many bad ratings as he is a great professor. Would definitely suggest taking him for Met 101 if possible!
Took Mandia for a science credit to graduate and arguably one of the worst professors I've had. Make sure you do the assignments before the due date but far enough in advance to not have points taken off! That's right, he will take points off for your timing even if you've submitted it on time. Never take this guy please!!
Professor Mandia has been an amazing professor. I took him first for Global Climate Change and now for MET 101. I am a history major, and I had a big gap between High School and College. He works with you. Makes himself available for questions and if you do an in-person class, he opens it with jokes. If you do the work, you will get an A.
Starts every class with dad jokes which I loved. Easy group work, a lot of assignments but 2 weeks to complete and he will proofread and give feedback if you ask. I definitely recommend checking because he's a super tough grader. Tests are online but reviews in class for them and they're pretty easy. Overall cool guy who cares about his subject.
Hardest class I have ever taken but Professor Mandia would always be available via email and even did a live Zoom meeting to help us great. Great and caring Professor!
Prof Mandia is a quirky, caring instructor who makes even dry topics engaging. While assignments can be time-consuming, staying on top of the work pays off. I found unstuckstudy ai and the free course materials really helpful for acing this class.
Does not lecture or give notes in class AT ALL. Classes consist of group busywork quickly glazed over in the last 10 minutes. Not worth showing up because he does not actually teach anything while you're there, even though it's an entirely in-person class. Difficult tests and harsh grading. You will regret taking the course. Drop while you can
Just be aware that MET 202 is less environmental and more political. I'd say he's a pretty good professor, but if you want to learn more about climate change, don't take his course.
VERY harsh grader. You will not pass this class if your work is not incredible. He can be difficult to deal with at times, but he is not mean or rude. He does not give good feedback, which is something he should do more. You need to focus, take notes, and pay attention or you will fail this class.
My forecasts are better than the tv . Thanks to having high standards for us .
Extremely smart man and very understanding. Can seem cocky, but I think he knows that he's very smart. He's funny and entertaining, but doesn't give great feedback. He takes your word when you say you don't need help, so unless you deliberately ask him for help, he will not review. Doesn't teach in class, you must do the readings at home prior.
