Funny guy!! Makes class a blast.. Kinda reminds me of David Spade
Great Guy, definitely reminds me of David Spade, makes any English class a blast, very knowledgeable and helpful.
Oh how I adored him! Great teacher. Also decided after 103 to take him for 104. Too bad he doesn't teach more, cause I'd take him again. Really entertaining yet a really solid teacher.
He's Awesome!
he is really smart, and very nice. his humor is very refreshing also. Very laid back professor and class!
He is nice and intelligent, but i think he hids behind his vocabulary in an attempt to mask his inscurity in his class. Also, he references seual topics alot which is refreshign adn humorous but a little unsettling. Overall he is a good guy
he grades kind of tough though, it's hard to get an a in his class..
Very helpful, open to help students outside of class, very funny and sarcastic
He's good overall...but sometimes his assignments that he doesn't have handouts for are a little vague. Which can result in a large majority of the class doing the assigment wrong and then they are unable to participate in the discussions during class.

he is a real funny guy yet tough too. papers are hard and it is hard to get an A. His assignments though are worth while and i feel as though i have learned alot.
I LEARNED A LOT BUT HARD GRADER..REALLY FUNNY..COOL CLASS.. REMINDS ME OF DAVID SPADE
He assigns too much busy work in addition to writing the papers, but I guess it shows in your writing. Your success in his class will depend on how good a writer you already are, he can be a tough grader, but very fair.
Markwell is a very cool teacher. His grading isn't too tough because I've always felt myself to be a crappy writer, yet attained an A on the first paper. Very funny, and keeps the class alive. He kinda' resembles Michael J. Fox (with blonde hair). Stoner&
hard, but fair grader. sooo funny. great class atmosphere. really helped out my thought process in writing. and hot.
sarcastic and funny as hell. great attitude towards his students. very helpful and offers great feedback. also, nice to stare at.
i hate writing, always felt i wasnt at writing papers but he helped me out a lot. very funny.
Hard grader, and a lot of busy work. Gets mad if you don't speak up in class and if you don't turn in a paper or assignment.
He's a really good teacher. Funny as hell too. Hard grader though, but if you don't do well on an assignment he doesn't make you feel bad about it. I get C's on papers and this was the first time I didnt feel bad about it. Looks&acts alot like MichaelJFox
Markwell is hot and smart. I enjoyed his class and he doesn't grade that harshly unless you turn in a crappy paper. His voice sounds exactly like Micheal J Fox but Markwell is smarter and hotter.
Markwell is one of the best Eng teachers at DePaul. His grading is not that bad.I never spoke in class but my writing was great and I still ended up with an A.Funny but does require you to show up in class.I would take him again.

Markwell does an awesome job in his class. He is funny and entertaining while teaching you. He can be a tough grader, but he is always fair. As long as you do the work, everything is great. He is VERY good motivating you during debates
Markwell has a cool personality but is really tough when it comes to grades. He's also an attendence Nazi. He's very funny though. So I have to give him credit for that.
Markwell is a very funny guy, he makes class fun BUT he is really conceited. He thinks too much of himself. Tough grader, expects a lot from students but he's a fair grader. All in all, I like his class, its fun and time goes by quickly.

Full of himself, over-steps boundaries a lot (makes inappropriate jokes), gives a lot of assignments. He's a decent grader-but you have to work to get an "a"- which is funny cuz it's english 104...not some crazy advanced class. I think he was made fun of a lot as a kid-he's taking it out us in his later years. He tries too much to be the "cool" guy
This guy was pretty cool overall sucky thing is that compared to my other eng classes, I had to work my ass off and I got a B. Point is that if you want an A in Eng you need to really revolve ur life around eng cause he is not an easy teacher at all.Although he is cool I like classes where I can do and ok job and get an A,unlike this class too hard
THis professor thinks h'es cool. His favorate band is the killers, he's kinda cocky, very funny, jokes around alot, sometimes unclear on assignments. Overall he's kina cool; and a cutie.
dude i took this guy's class and i just do not understand why people say they like him soo much. three of my friends had this professor and said he was great i definatly disagree. stay away from this professor. HE IS SO FULL OF HIMSELF AND THINKS HE'S THE S**T. I WANTED TO DIE IN HIS CLASS EVERYDAY!!!! Stay away he is TERRIBLE!
Funny guy and makes you think about different things. I see how he challenges some. Those who have a problem with him clearly have an agenda and seemingly can't spell anyway (see below). Great teacher.
A great teacher. Very funny and smart. My favorite teacher from DePaul!
Despite the mixed reviews, I think that if you can handle an instructor that considers you an equal, and refuses to "kid handle" you - then you would probably enjoy him. He's funny and self assured, and a great teacher. He is also not afraid to level with students and be blatently honest, which, can be a rarity. Try him! You'll learn something!
He is a very intelligent man, and makes things fun.
No. Don't do it. The only people that enjoyed this class, are faking it because they're so scared of him and are still sucking up to this guy. His jokes are not funny; they are offensive. His remarks make me question how he is a professor. No matter how many times you revise, there will ALWAYS be something wrong in your paper.
Not too hard if you know what he is looking for. He jokes around a lot, which is great! Makes the class VERY enjoyable. He is extremely helpful and willing to make an effort. Lots of homework, but it's simple stuff, nothing that takes more then 15 mins before class! (except for the papers) Take him, he's an awesome prof! Strict on attendence.
A good guy, down to earth, but always takes potshots at Bush and other conservatives at any given chance. Other than that gripe, he's enjoyable and has good humor. Readings he chooses are fun and well picked, but the topics he wants you to understand can be broad and vague. I did not enjoy the class because the writing style needed is odd.
I agree with the guy who said that anyone who liked this man is faking it. I was in his course last year; he spat out stupid jokes, gave overwhelming assignments, had a HUGE ego, was very unhelpful and generally viewed that whatever he said was gold and the rest was rubbish. He stated that he had his cell phone on "only for my agent."
This guy is great. The assignments were compelling and the papers were pretty hard. If you do the work, participate in class, and put lots the time into the papers, you will have no problems in this class. His lectures in class are very broad. He doesn't spoon-feed you concepts, nor does he hold your hand through the course. Fun guy. Good class.
If your skills are not centered around composition and philosophy, then of course you're going to hate English teachers. The man is not arrogant, he does not have an agenda, he is not insulting, and he is damn good at his job, which is to TEACH RHETORIC. It is not to help you have a nice GPA, you have to do that on your own. The man is fair.
Is a decent teacher i guess... He makes you earn you grade and participation is major here... do not expect anything easy...
He is a somewhat obnoxious indivdual that can be humorous as well. Participation is major here so it is very important that you show up to class everyday. Do not except anything easy here...
If you are laid back and have a good sense of humor you will like him, but if you are uptight and get offended easily you probably aren't going to like Markwell. I thought he was funny as hell and made class interesting. However, he is not an easy grader.
very very obnoxious... kinda picks favorites...
He's good ! at first, he may looks a lil bit scary with his course material.. but his jokes really made a difference(although sometime it's a lil bit too much) and very2 helpful outside / inside the classroom.. I reccomend u to take his class
Go to class everyday and do NOT get on his bad side! He picks favorites and is a wannabe actor who thinks his bad jokes amuse the class. Not an easy grader and grades with his moods. Made a rude comment to me about smelling like cigs. A**hole
This guy is flipping amazing. You actually LEARN in this class and improve your writing skills. Its not a blow off class and its not impossible. Just make sure you invest time into your papers and it will be awesome. Hes very helpful and is willing to take the time to talk with you. I took him twice.
Smart/funny teacher, he can be demanding at times but you will leave his class knowing your****. I worked for an A, but got a B+, still his grading is fair.
He is a very funny man. His jokes are very riskee. He made me laugh while learning ENGLISH! He was well informed and he is entertaning while he teaches.
he is really good. i hated him the first couple of weeks, but he grew on me. he cares a lot about you learning. he does pick favorites, but he does this based on who will talk in class. AND, if he makes fun of you, just make fun of him back, he appreciates it.
He is a fantastic professor. Take it from someone whose first language is not English. I am not a strong writer either and he went out of his way to help me. He's funny and compared to other professors his assignments are not as long or as many. If you're not into sarcasm then do not take him. He kept me awake after coming from Eco and religion.
A lot of people think that he's really outrageous, but I think that's only if you're used to conservative teaching. You write solely on one topic a year, it gets a little redundant but it's helpful to learn different forms of persuasion. Semi-difficult grader, I tried my best for an A but I got a B+ instead.
great professor! runs a fun class and some of the assignments are enjoyable. will help you with papers and responds to e-mails very quickly. not afraid to speak his mind. very blunt but if you put the effort into the class, it will pay off.
Don't take Markwell. I am an A student and despite meeting with him to discuss how to improve my work, I only pulled off a B+ in his class. He was no help when I met with him. He is arrogant and is clearly teaching freshman to feel cool & they don't question him or point out his many flaws. I'm confused that he was rated hot...he's not at all.
Awesome dude, just a tough class. Don't expect to get a good grade in the class either, because he doesn't seem to grade higher than a b+. Still a really cool guy.
I completed all the assignments, tried to get feedback to improve my work (Markwell is vague and inarticulate), attended most classes, and walked out with a B+, having learned very little. I felt that the class was a waste of time and Markwell's lectures and tangents mostly just revolved around his desperation for approval.
There is a distinct line between sarcasm and being condescending and obnoxious. Professor Markwell crosses that line on a fairly regular basis. If you enjoy learning concepts of argument that you should have been taught in middle and high school, then by all means take this class. Since I was transferring, I dropped this class. You should too.
There are lots of sections of this class. I highly recommend avoiding Markwell. You will dread going to class and hearing him use the fact that you are a captive audience to be his soundboard for lame jokes and male chauvinist remarks. I should have followed the instinct to drop him after the first class session.
The dry humor cracks me up, although some peopled don't get it sometimes. He is a good teacher, but you need to ask questions or else he will keep going. He knows what he is doing.
The man knows rhetoric and will pound it into you. His class was challenging, I carried a ton away from it. Take this class if you actually want to learn from WRD 104. Don't take it if you can't handle being the butt of a joke, hard work and a smart professor.
Markwell is overall a really helpful professor and will answer any question you have. He is always willing to set up a meeting and is clear when explaining things. He expects a lot out of you but I feel that after discussing other WRD classes with friends, you will take the most out of his class.
He's really full of himself and rude. From talking to others who had different professors, Markwell made us do more work than what they had to do. However, he actually kind of knows what he's talking about compared to some other wrd professors
Prof. Markwell is great! The comments here don't do him justice. He knows what he's talking about and plus he's HILARIOUS! I would definetly take him again. The textbook we used was Exploring Languages. So don't bother buying the others until WRD 104.
He is such an ass, he makes it a big deal if you email him and ask for help. He never answers your question directly, and makes everything confusing. Overall he just is not helpful at all
Markwell is great. Don't listen to anyone telling you otherwise. He actually makes you work for yourself and won't spoon feed you. Plus, he's freakin HILARIOUS! Take him if you can.
He's a good teacher, but I found him extraordinarily arrogant. He was always talking about the generation he teaches being the least literate and how incredibly inept he thought we were. He generalized everyone to fit his notion of young people. He needs to find a new profession if he hates younger generations, frankly.
I'm a transfer student that had to take WRD 103 as a junior. I figured the class would be easy, and it was, but I fear for the freshman who come into this class and have to deal with an ill-prepared professor. He often loosely described the assignments in class and you could only guess what he would actually grade them on. Doesn't use D2L.
Professor Markwell is an awesome professor. He is definitely not an easy, and makes you work hard for an A, but if you put in actual effort you will do well. He is very sarcastic, and isn't shy about his political beliefs but I loved that. It made the class much more interesting. Come to class ready to work and you'll be fine. AND DON'T BE LATE.
I enjoy having Professor Markwell. He's really good at forming interesting discussions in class and makes it less boring. He's not the easiest grader, but he's also not extremely difficult either. Overall I enjoyed his class.
Scott is a cool person to talk to, he has no reservations on what he'll say. Homework: not hard but you must earn your grade. He also doesnt give out alot. The only real pain is the reading quizzes, which were my bane of the class. Basically: not a class you can BS but if you try even slightly you'll do fine.
Worst professor I have had so far. Attendance is mandatory (that includes lateness). Reading quizzes are awful. He isn't very helpful and doesn't reply to emails. Obnoxious and kind of rude. I'm an A student but this class was dreadful.
Quite possibly the very worst class I've taken at DePaul. The instructor is very arrogant and rude. For example, this session the entire class was seniors and day one he said (a direct quote) "Your all seniors so I can pretty much assign whatever I want and you have to do it since you can't afford to fail or retake this class". Don't take him.
He is funny, but he's really rude and dry, so you have to be able to handle his personality. He'll call you out for every wrong thing you say, and challenge every argument. Doesn't hand out As; you must work hard for them. Very arrogant and full of himself, but he's not sensitive so you can voice your emotions. Didn't LOVE him, but he wasn't awful
Markwell is very passionate about what he teaches. He is always eager to help his students, but he is not afraid to be critical of poor work. He likes people who speak up in class. I would recommend him highly for someone who likes English and writing.
Good professor. Fair grader. Doesn't assign busy work. Can be a bit snarky at times but I would recommend him for WRD 103 and WRD 104.
I really enjoyed Markwell's class. If you do what he asks of you you'll do fine. Just make sure to actually read the few reading assignments he gives.
Professor Markwell was very unclear about most of the assignments and was unclear about what his expectations of us were
Markwell is unclear about most things-- assignments, grading criteria, etc. he is willing to meet with you one on one to discuss any questions you have, but communicating with him is one of the most frustrating encounters I've had at DePaul. He is not friendly or funny in a way that I appreciated. Overall I just found him very frustrating.
He is always there to talk to you! If you're conservative though, don't take him. He's a very liberal guy and he'll make that clear to you very early. Overall though, a great teacher!
I learned a lot from this class, but I definitely had to work for it. Markwell is very liberal and says what hes thinking so be prepared for that. Help is definitely there when you ask for it. Luckily there are no quizzes or tests.
I took Markwell for 103 and 104, and was honestly disappointed in 104. He is a great professor but was lacking in clarity and energy this quarter. I still would recommend him though.
Professor Markwell is really funny in a completely sarcastic and sometimes condescending way. He is arrogant, but I really enjoyed listening to his lectures. There were no quizzes and he graded the essays with extreme lenience. If you're not a snarky liberal or don't have thick skin, you may not enjoy his lectures too much.
Professor Markwell was hilarious and engaging, but his sense of humor and bluntness are not for everyone. He may seem intimidating at first, but he's actually really nice and helpful. He made me a better writer!
He's a good choice if you are passionate about writing. He gives great feedback and actually edits your work thoughtfully. However, if you do not enjoy writing, avoid this class. He assigns much more homework than most WRD professors and grades fairly difficult. Also, he is very liberal and will share his views, so far rights should avoid.
Markwell is the man. Most of the kids who didn't like him were used to following extremely rigid coursework and having every expectation down on a rubric. He certainly may come off as a bit condescending but I think it's a bit more of a dry sarcasm. I'd say our political views were pretty contrasted yet we seemed to get along swimmingly.
I have nothing nice to say about him. Scott is a rude, optioned, horrible teacher. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He wholeheartedly believes that he knows everything and if you doubt him you will get called out in class. Please say yourself the nightmare and do not take his class.
Markwell gives great feedback! Definitely go to his office hours and talk to him about what you can do better, because it will help. Markwell is also hilarious! He pulls in current events into class, which I personally love. Markwell is a liberal and he doesn't hide it, so if you aren't into that I would avoid taking his class.
Markwell is a very knowledgeable professor. My writing greatly improved while I was in his classes - I took him for both WRD103 and WRD104. He is openly liberal, so if you are as well, you'll love the class. Putting political views aside, he is funny and provides a lot of insight on everything he teaches. Definitely take advantage of office hours!
Professor Markwell does not stay on topic, changes the syllubus often, he goes on many tangents that do not apply to the subject matter. He is not available during office hours, and hard to get ahold of (email/phone). He is crass and disrepsectful towards students.
I felt like this course was appropriately challenging. The focus is obviously on writing and rhetoric, so it's very paper-heavy. There's an outstanding amount of freedom with the writing assignments so it's easy to get confused sometimes, but I always ended up getting A/Bs. It's a big change from H.S. with everything being vague. Final is easy pts
Markwell is a funny guy, but he takes up class time unnecessarily. If there is time left over in class, he'll just fill up the time talking about something that isn't due for weeks. Gives lots of feedback on papers, but the feedback is not clear. I was never sure what his expectations are for papers. He's not bad, but I wouldn't take him again.
I never knew what Markwell wanted out of students papers. Something was always wrong and its like you could never impress him. Also, when someone says something in class, he quickly talks over them and it makes you regret trying to talk. He is also just rude to students and the class drags. Also you do not need the textbooks he tells you to get.
Professor Markwell is an elitist who has absolutely no respect for his students. In discussion Markwell interrupts his students, often to just finish their thought for them. He grades paper on his own opinion on the topic, rather than how well the paper is written and if it fits the prompt. If you like basic respect, AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.
I'm not sure how Prof. Markwell teaches in a classroom, but it is a nightmare when online due to COVID. His instructions are unclear and he spends class time focusing on the wrong things. We would have several papers to write and he would give us an entire lecture about font usage. He seems pretentious and brings politics into the classroom often.
He aight.
Don't take this professor, created a very disrespectful environment. He is extremely boring by nature, and talks at you the entire time. Make examples out of people's trauma and does not understand pronouns. Interesting experience as a wrd 104 professor.
Professor Markwell knew everyone by name and made a connection with his students. He holds a high standard from the start of of the quarter. Markwell gives good feedback and was often open for office hours to throughly talk through a grade. I would definitely take this course again.
Professor Markwell was one of the best professors I'd had the first quarter and first time at DePaul. He's got a great attitude and a humorous demeanor when giving his lectures. Work load was pretty easy, you usually get one essay a week that (depending on your schedule) would be explained and 'given out' on Monday, and be due the following Monday.
Bro avoid him, he is rude and passive aggressive and makes weird comments for literally no reason. He thinks he knows everything but he barely understands half the stuff he's teaching. He's one of those profs who's like "I wrote this part of the textbook so I should know" and he's so annoying. His lectures are also so boring.
Do not take a course with this professor. He is very arrogant and unhelpful. He doesn't explain assignments well or sometimes at all. He likes to call out people to pick on and is very annoying to get ahold of outside of class. He often goes on tangents unrelated to course material and assigns advertising work in WRD 104. Don't take his class, man.
he seemed to be extremely biased during lectures, and at times would make unnecessarily weird comments about things like race, gender, and age that always made me uncomfortable. when students tried to argue respectfully against his claims he would quickly shut down the topic and urge the class to save their thoughts as he disagreed with them.
Prof Markwell is not that bad at all. He gives one essay at least every week with clear instructions and gives good feedback on drafts for you to fix on the final version of your paper. He also does a 1 on 1 meeting with you in the middle of the quarter to review your progress and what you can improve on. Great guy!!
Very lecture heavy, but he made some really memorable thoughtful comments and dry humor jokes. Lots of writing that overlaps with each other, though has a lot of freedom in subject matter + is very clear about what he wants in a paper. Would take him again, though not sure with how much work I had for it.
I would not take WRD 103 with him. You don't learn much because he expects you to know everything already. His feedback is often not helpful and quite snarky. He is chill as a person but not ideal as a professor. He also loves to overcomplicate instructions for no reason.
