Bro. Martin is a new edition to the BYU-I Psychology department, and a welcome one at that. If you're looking for a professor who is passionate and knowledgable on the topics he teaches about, then look no further. Like any good professor, he will expect you to show up and to do the work. He is very helpful and make the time for his students.
He joined BYU-I in Fall 2014, so as any new teacher with some teaching experience there're a lot of things I'm sure he was excited to incorporate, but with that great enthusiasm came a little disorganization in the course, & a little more lecturing than guided discussion. I'm sure within a couple more semesters he'll get his groove. GREAT TEACHER!
Taking this teacher for this class would be a huge mistake. He is extremely unorganized. His expectations are unclear and expects you to know exactly what he expects.
Scott is very passionate about his work, and is very dedicated to his teaching career and students. He has a lot to offer and is more than willing to help out where needed. Yes, his class will require hard work, but it definitely is worth it. Fantastic for a new professor here at BYU-I. He has a lot to offer!
Weekly quizzes pulled from the book (easy). Group in class work that counts toward grade (from book & data collected as group) ; doesn't tell you when you will be doing them so coming to class is important if you want an A. Difficult grader on your Research Project Proposal but VERY willing to help you do better. Infectious passion for this subject
This class is frustrating. If you want to understand an assignment you have to read his mind. And he'll dock your grade for things that you never knew you had to do and he never told the class to do. He also acts like his class is the only class you're taking. He gives a ton of homework. He also doesn't teach. You do classwork and read thechapter.
If you can avoid the class do it! Your new professor is your textbook. Brother Martin will occasionally explain concepts and ideas, but he'll do it after you complete a major assignment on the subject. Any instructions or help that he gives will be so vague that it's really just useless. He'll also change the assignment hours before it's due.
I literally don't know why there's so many bad reviews because Bro Martin is a cool dude cuz first of all he's young, he's funny, he's helpful, his assignments are easy it's just busy work, hes just awesome.
I'm not sure what the point of this class was. There is literally zero organization. If you ask a question about the material, he dances around the answer as if he doesn't know the material. Assignments are just busy work and have no point. There isn't any curriculum. Thankfully there aren't any test because there's no way to know what to study.
One of the worst teachers ever at giving clear instructions and being helpful. Because he was too specific with previous classes (according to him) he's decided to be so vague that the instructions really don't mean anything or provide help, and then he grades you using very specific criteria. He's a great guy, but he really shouldn't be a teacher.
Brother Martin was really cool. He was always willing to help us and he gave very specific instructions on iLearn for every single assignment even if it was just busywork and we got out of class early a lot. It was the best.
His biggest issue is that his instructions can be confusing. He either provides too much instruction, or too little. He tries to be fair because of that though, and is very fair with grading. If you go to class and do the work, you can get an A easily. He is also always willing to talk to a student for as long as they may need.
Scott Martin is so unbelievably kind. He can be a little vague and scattered, but I chalk that up to him being super young and new to the university. He is always willing to help and make your class experience wonderful. He is so genuine and invested in his students. He loves group work and gives a lot of busy work, but class is fun and enjoyable.
He's pretty cool, you just really have to go to class to get a good grade. And there is class work. DOn't miss class because it will hurt your grade
Brother Martin is so kind. He also looks like the spawn of Superman and Keanu Reeves. This class was enjoyable and I would recommend Brother Martin to anyone wanting to take this course. If you go to class and do your homework/reading this class will be easy for you. It prepared me really well for Experiencing Research.
Bro. Martin is a champ! He is young and full of energy. This class is a bit hard to grasp everything perfectly because of how much material is covered but it is a vital foundation for Psych majors. It is not hard to get a good grade though. Martin is very smart and very willing to help. Tests and quizzes are all online. You need access to SPSS.
Great teacher! He's young and vibrant! He is willing to help you if you put forth your part. Make sure to read lots of research journals, go to class because he'll usually give homework and may not show up on I-Learn. He really just wants to help. He might go off on a tangent but that's ok. You WILL do good if you just do what he asks. Not hard
I don't know what those haters are talking about. If you failed 221, you will struggle, but that's your fault. If he's "vague," it's cause you already learned it in 221. Be a grown up and learn to work and use your resources, not be spoon feed an A. If any improvement is needed, it's the students, not him, that needs improvement.
Brother Martin is really willing to help if you are willing to ask. The nature of research methods makes it a difficult class. I wouldn't want any other professor to teach this class. He is really patient and willing to work with you. Go to class, do your homework, and ASK QUESTIONS!!!! Brother Martin is a great teacher.
Research methods isn't the most interesting class, but necessary formal Psych majors. I would say Brother Martin did an adequate job teaching all of the necessary concepts and he would take time to explain anything you had questions about. Somewhat disorganized in that oftentimes I wasn't sure what content to focus on in the chapters.
Brother Martin is very energetic and enthusiastic about research. He helps you understand the material. There is lot expected of each student, so be accountable for your own work. You do need to put in work for this class, but I enjoyed it very much. He tries new things, some of them work, some of them don't, but he has a good attitude every day.
Brother Martin is an awesome teacher and truly explains everything to you regarding what is expected. HOWEVER, this class is difficult and you MUST work for your grade. I have a high A, but it did not come easy. If you work hard, and go to him where needed, you will find you will excel in this class! I would take from him again!
Bro Martin is a very caring Professor, he takes an interest in the students and wants them to be successful. It's a hard class, with a lot of work, he does NOT give grades away! He is a talker and you can get a lost in the circularity. But if you do the work, if you ask for help, you will do alright! DON'T WAIT TIL END OF SEMESTER TO GET HELP!
Overall, great course, and Bro Martin is a great guy. However, it's fairly apparent that he is a relatively new teacher. There were many instances where announcements were unexpected (felt like he was adlibbing the course as he went in some cases). Take careful notes-you will be expected to remember many announcement without any additional warning!
This is a really good class, but is definitely not an easy grade. You have to really work to get a good grade. You get the grade that you want. You need to be in class to get a clearer explanation as well as get tips for the final. The finals and paper are tough, so be prepared to work.
Brother Martin was super helpful. He explains things really well and makes this course fun even though it is a research statistics class. He also answers your questions until you understand the material as well as replying to emails very quickly.
Great guy, very helpful teacher. Really enjoyed him, although I do not like research methods at all. The class itself is pretty fast paced and fairly difficult.
Brother Martin is passionate about what he teaches and knows his material. He does go off on tangents sometimes. The class is fast paced and a little difficult. However, he is always willing to answer any questions and meet with students outside of class.
He does a wonderful job giving you feedback and is more than willing to help you if you go in. He does assign homework that we sometimes didn't have any knowledge about until 2 days before the assignment was due. He wants us to do well in this class and tries to prepare you for grad school. He take a long time to score your papers.
Scott Martin was extremely helpful this semester. He worked with my schedule to meet with me even though he was so busy. He is really a helpful (but tough) teacher and I really respect him. If he would not have taken time to meet with me outside of class, my research proposal would have been awful.
Brother Martin knows what he is talking about but if you do ask for questions be specific he can be really confusing if you dont.
The class is a rough one, no matter what. You'll have to work hard if you want a good grade and if you want to understand. But, Bro. Martin is incredible helpful. He wants his students to succeed and will do everything in his power to help you to do so - you MUST do your part though. It is impossible to just slide by in this class.
Brother Martin is a great teacher, he is helpful and answers question thoroughly. If you put in the time and effort you will succeed in the class. There are a lot of assignments and at the beginning of the semester, I thought it was busy work and kinda annoying but at the end of the semester you will see these assignments truly help you!
Brother Martin is a really nice guy, he is a good teacher but can be a bit confusing. He talks a lot and what could be a simple explanation turns into a long lecture. There is a lot of material to cover in very little time, so I felt a bit sorry for him, and for us (students), we could've used some more practice activities.
Brother Martin is very knowledgeable about the subject. He tries to make things a lot more simple by explaining in class and having class assignments for practice which makes things a lot easier. He is very easy going and is willing to help you out whenever you need it. The course is difficult but you learn a ton!
He can go a little overboard on explaining things from time to time, but he just wants everyone to understand. It is a difficult course, but he understands the extremely well. He's very enthusiastic, and made the class worth coming to. I didn't like researching anything before this class, but he helped me have a better attitude about it.
He's a great teacher but you have to stay aware of things that are due. You also have to come to class prepared with the reading because you will get called on. You can tell he wants his students to succeed.
Brother Martins class consist of a lot of homework that is very helpful, so do it! He also requires you to write a paper that is due at the end of the semester, which is hard so make sure to get as much help as you can for this paper. There are two finals an application exam and multiple choice. Both exams are not easy but manageable.
he is very good at explaining any question that you might have. the only thing that i didn't like about the class, is that there is just too much work. this class should be a 4 credit class with the amount of work that we do.
Brother Martin's class was filled with work. Expect to be doing a lot of work and have a lot of homework. He is a very helpful teacher and is enthusiastic about what he is teaching and it shows. Go into this class willing to put forth A LOT of time and you will do well.
Brother Martin knows a lot about statistics, he has done a lot of work in the field of research. While I liked taking the course from Brother Martin I found it difficult at times to keep up with the course work. There is a lot of material to cover, at times I felt like I was taking two courses. An SPSS course and a research proposal class.
Brother Martin's class is not very hard. As long as you focus on the material in the textbook, you will be fine. Takes a lot of time going over a review of the homework. Class is almost pointless if you understand the homework as all it is is mostly a review.
Moves through material quickly so be ready to understand or ask questions.
Brother Martin is there to help if you ask for it. There is a need to set time aside to try and understand the material, however, if you put forth the required time then you should be fine. Show up to class, pay attention, don't fall asleep, and ask him questions!
Scott Martin is an incredibly intelligent, witty, and quick paced professor. He tends to over-explain course material and key concepts, but that can be very beneficial for students. If you're looking for someone who will significantly contribute to your education and help to prepare you for future courses as well as your career, then he's your man.
You will probably have to take this class because it's required, but if you ever have to take it from anyone, Brother Martin is the man. He is so enthusiastic about research and really cares about his students. This is known for not being an easy or enjoyable class, but it is possible to get an A. Do your homework and take advantage of the tutors.
the tests are hard but that is because we spent all semester learning these things so it should be something you're aware of. i am just not good at data analysis. he gives good feedback on the paper. you should be in class because we do grade some of our homework assignments ourselves in class.
Brother Martin is very helpful. You will have a great experience in this class if you actually care to learn. I would attribute most of the negative experiences I had in the class to the course structure rather than Brother Martin's teaching. However, be aware that the man loves to talk which being an introvert made it tough. Great professor IMO.
This class is not a walk in the park. It is demanding and time consuming. Some of the concepts can be hard to grasp, but Brother Martin will work with anyone that asks for it. He is always ready and willing to work and help the students be successful. I would not take this class from anyone, but Brother Martin.
The book helps greatly with the final and all the assignments. Expect brief, clear-cut answers with little overemphasis.
He is really helpful and cares a lot that you understand and know how to do well on your assignments. Sometimes he gets carried away and he can be long-winded, but overall a very enjoyable course.
There is so much work for this class. Make sure you don't fall behind. Not a lot of feedback on projects.
Brother Martin is a decent teacher. He didn't grade assignments until near the end of the semester. The subject was a little dry, but he made it interesting enough. Tons of assignments, but you do learn a lot.
Bro Martin is AWESOME. The class included one big paper that was worked on little by little throughout the semester and a final. You don't need to know SPSS (I only used excel) but it is helpful to know the basics. He is super helpful. The only con is that he doesn't explain the research paper in class, just online. The TA will help though.
Brother Martin is an amazing teacher. He is easy going, he cares about you and he will share personal stories/testimony that relate to the gospel. He is easy going and is funny. I would definitely suggest taking his classes!
Bro. Martin is an awesome teacher and a cool guy. He is very smart and kind. His class is organized well on ilearn. Attendance is not mandatory but there are often assignments that you can only receive credit for in class. This is not a difficult class and he does a great job making it interesting. Tests are open book online. I learned a lot.
You will have scheduled 3 question quizzes when you start a new chapter. We have class discussions. He is an amazing teacher who genuinely cares about the students. You will have articles to analyze but the work load is not a lot, the quizzes are not hard if you read, and exams are open book. He is fantastic, willing to help if you miss something.
This class was one of the hardest you will take within the Psych major, this is not because of the material. The class was unorganized, lectures were uninformative and majority of your learning was from the tutors and textbook. Don't expect feed back or answers to any questions in class or otherwise.
He is a TOUGH grader. That said you learn SO much from him. The principles you learn in this class are widely applicable to other classes. If you struggle with something talk to him before its due and he will work with you. He genuinely cares about his students. Prioritize your time and you'll do fine.
If you like seeing your grades in I-Learn don't take his class. Grades were entered slower than a snail. Example, my midterm was not graded by the time I submitted my final. There is a paper that with worth a large portion of your grade and I felt unprepared to write it. Expectations were often unclear. I won't be taking another class from him.
He is my favorite professor, I've taken 3 classes from him so far. That being said pysch302 is a difficult class. He is not a "bad" teacher due to content being hard, he is passionate about helping everyone. He is always available outside class/has tutors. I can't say enough about him, he is a great person and genuinely cares about our success.
This was Bro Martin's first semester teaching 370, taking over from Bro Lowry, so the exams are in Bro Lowry's style. Exams are very extensive, but Bro Martin was amazing at preparing and guiding in what you should focus on. There are "Objectives" that you need to answer for each chapter, do them well" Very helpful to study them for exams.
Brother Martin truly cares about his students. He makes you think outside of the box & he makes you actually learn the material. If you work hard you won't be disappointed. Open books on exams and quizzes. He is one of my favorite professors. He can be slow at grading, but he always makes it up on his end. He really tries to be fair to everyone.
The class wasn't the hardest as far as concepts, but it was a lot of work. There was a lot of different things going on and he didn't always explain them in class. He is a nice enough person, but not always the best at explaining. It's up to you to figure out what is going on in the class and don't expect a lot of feedback.
Brother Martin is an amazing person and teacher. His class is tough and he's a hard grader but he will take the time to help you understand the material.
This class is not particularly difficult. It has lots of busy work, but if you participate, read, and do the outside project then you'll do well. The teacher is very spiritual and inspiring for everyday. He cares about his students individually. But he does not grade quickly.
PYCH370 is a tough class. If you can't teach yourself, avoid this class. Do the learning objectives and DO THEM WELL they are your grade (tests come straight off LO). When I took it it was his first time teaching it so the class lecture was rough. It can only get better though. He is understanding and tries to help you if you put forth the effort.
Brother Martin is a teacher who believes in BUSY WORK. He genuinely has good ideas and objectives, but struggles transferring that from his mind to his class. He's hard to meet with, takes forever to grade, and changes the syllabus a lot. However, he cares SO much about the class and a spiritual environment. His stories/rants are funny, too!
He is the best! Super funny and while he can go on 45 minute rants, there is always a message and he means well. He teaches you what you need to know and connects with the gospel and how you, yourself can improve. The biggest project is the My Life project but he lays everything out for you. Do the reading, do your work and you should be good.
Had a great time in the class. Make sure you listen carefully to class lectures he teaches a lot of things by just talking to the class
Brother Martin is an awesome human being. He cares so much about his students, and if you put in the effort you will learn. The only this that really bothered me was that he talks too much during lecture almost to the point that we don't get through all the information, go over on class time, and it confuses people more. He is great though.
Brother Martin is amazing! He's very lenient with his grades and is very inspirational. Attendance isn't mandatory but you will definitely want to go for quizzes and instructions. His tests are take-home but they really make you think. Sometimes his test questions are a little confusing but if you ask him questions he is very helpful.
Brother martin is a great teacher! I thought I would hate this class because statistics was not my favorite but he really made everything super easy to understand. He takes the time to answer everyone's question before we take our quizzes. The test are not necessarily exams because they aren't multiply choice but you will know how to do everything.
Brother Martin really knows and cares the material he teaches. Very passionate about what he does and can relate the topics to real-world applications. Sometimes he gets off topic and goes off on tangents, but he's pretty funny. Sometimes he doesn't get through everything he wants to during lecture, but then again he teaches people, not lessons.
He is the nicest, most caring, and real teacher! He honestly wants everyone to succeed in his class. He gives Application Demonstrations instead of multiple choice testing center exams, which I loved because it made me fully understand the material. There is ZERO group work (!!!), but there is always the option to work with others. He's amazing! :)
The course is hard but, overall it is an extremely good professor that will work with you to get your grade up. However, he doesn't accept late work so you will need to stay on top of your work if you really want to get a decent grade.
Brother Martin is a great guy who cares about his students and is available outside of class for discussion. However, in class he often gets off topic and while these stories can be fun, I felt I didn't need to be very attentive to the lecture, even though I did because the information was important to the tests and the papers.
Best Professor I've ever taken a class from. He's extremely knowledgeable about the subject, seeing as he has a Doctorate in Survey Methodology, and does can excellent job explaining concepts in great detail. This can sometimes rub people the wrong way but it never bothered me. If you're genuinely interested in the subject you'll do well!
He is a great teacher. Very enthusiastic about the class. There is a lot of information, so make sure to pay attention to the lectures. But this class is very useful.
Brother Martin is very knowledgable in statistics and he is good at teaching simply and helping the students understand the material. The tests are take home and the were difficult but the tutors are amazing and I would recommend taking advantage of going to the tutoring center if you struggle to understand. I definitely recommend this class.
Brother Martin's in class lectures are the best part of this class. His positivity is contagious and it can't help but make you excited to learn about statistics. The course is difficult but if you can find a good group of friends it really takes the load off a little bit. Be prepared to work and study though. Don't be afraid to ask him for help!
I think he really knows his stuff and loves his topic. He can rant a little and get off topic or distracted by students that don't get it. But again he can take a complicated stats idea and explain to the dumbest of us, like really make it clear but for those of us who get it can be repatitive.
Brother Martin is pretty awesome. He's passionate and fun, but in Psych 302 he got off-topic a lot and doesn't seem to have a lot of control over his class. My class was pretty disorganized, but I've heard he's better in the other classes he teaches. He's a tough grader and he doesn't communicate expectations very well, especially for papers, etc.
He is so nice and genuine. I ended up getting an A in the class but I attended class, met with a study group, and met with him outside of class. He is disorganized which drove me CRAZY and the course wasn't set up very well online so I never knew where to find the material which was frustrating. You can use notes on all tests so take good notes!
I really enjoyed this class. Brother Martin is really enjoyable to listen to. If you are willing to work and try you will learn a lot of things. Brother Martin is also really good to work with and meet with students outside of class if you are confused. This class is a bit disorganized. Some assignments are hard to find, and gets he distracted.
Bro Martin is a good guy and he really wants to help the students. But this course is disorganized, and the teaching method is similar. There are multiple objectives to this class that have a lot of potential, but most of my time was spent wondering what assignments I have to do rather than having meaningful learning experiences. Very disorganized.
I think Brother Martin is an awesome person, but he goes on tangents which makes things more confusing at times. I do advise taking this class as a lecture, but if you do, I would go talk to the TA's and tutors a lot so that you can have a clear understanding.
He is really fun and easy going and always willing to help. Sometimes his explanations are not as succinct as other professors, but he does teach very simply and its fun listening to him. I enjoyed learning from him and the course itself wasnt that hard conceptually.
This class does not need to be difficult, but the organization of the course and communication of the professor made it difficult. Everyone in our class was constantly confused about due dates. Worst of all, the expectations and requirements of how to get an A on each assignment were very unclear, so ability and effort did not count as it should.
Brother Martin is a great teacher. He is very knowledgeable about his information and knows his stuff. This class is hard, to do well you need to be in class so you can get the notes. The assignments are too bad at the beginning but get really heavy towards the end. Make sure the assignment dates are accurate on I-learn.
This instructor cares about the students and the course material. He always gives feedback.
Scott Martin is the reason why I enjoyed this class. Make no mistake that Research Methods is tough, quite tough. Read the book, and ask questions. Brother Martin is a great teacher; he is very passionate about what he does and knows his stuff. He may not always seem invested in you because he's so busy, but he does care about. His. Students.
Brother Martin is a fantastic teacher who really cares about the subject matter. He makes sure everyone is comfortable with each section being taught before moving on, which is great but it can waste quite a bit of class time. His assignment structure can be a bit confusing but he'll clarify anything if you just ask him.
I really enjoyed this class because of the discussions in class. This class will prepare you for real-world applications regarding research methods.
There are daily quizzes on the readings, he goes over the readings and answers any questions before we take the quiz. The two major tests are the midterm and final Brother Martin gives you all the things you need to be prepared and practice assignments to help you. The research project is time consuming but the writing tutors provided are helpful.
He's an awesome teacher. If you come to class and turn in all assignments you will receive a good grade. He does a good job of engaging all his students in the classroom.
Professor Martin is an awesome teacher. His enthusiasm keeps you entertained and engaged in the course. He is always willing to help you understand the material and is willing to work with you on your grade. This can be a difficult class if you struggle with stats like myself, but Professor Martin makes it doable.
I came into this class not liking research. I'm leaving this class now and I'm starting to actually enjoy research, Martin made class enjoyable. He is good on grading you get about 50% just for trying on a quesiton, and if you are somewhat right, you get 85% right, he's a nice grader. Ask him for research experience, youll need it for grad school.
Brother Martin is a great professor because hes willing to help you when you acitvely ask for help. The class itself would be hard when you are not prepared (it is a college class) , so prepare for it and get the help you need, you will the grade you want.
This class was not easy, you HAVE to stay up to date on all of the assignments and there is no room for late work... However, Brother Martin is a very good teacher. It isn't hard to want to go to class and if you put in the work he will help you understand the material and pass the class.
He is a fantastic person. I have rarely met a professor that is so caring and open to his students. You will love this professor. On the other hand, he doesn't explain things very well at all. He really wants his students to understand the material, but in doing so, he totally over-explains, and makes it even more confusing. We also run out of time
He does go on tangents sometimes they are long but for the most part it keeps the class more about just the material. Tests actual make you learn. Not just multiple choice. Actually feel like I can use this stuff. Harder class though.
Man so Brother Martin is an absolute champ. The material for the course was hefty- no doubt about it, but he made the material digestible and understandable. There were times where I'd be doing the assignments and feel a bit overwhelmed, but going to class ALWAYS helped me feel more confident, happy, and aware. His teaching style is great! The man!
Brother Martin helps you to understand the real world application of this course. Though there are a few big assignments at the end of the semester, the way that Bro Martin organizes the course ensures you are working on assignments all semester. Also, he is always finding ways to give extra credit so make sure to attend class!
Brother Martin: optimism, work ethic, great humor. Caring. Relatable. Super knowledgeable and explains things clearly. His tests do not require you to memorize tons of stuff, they see how you are able to apply what you know, which really worked for me. The workload at the end of semester is pretty heavy fyi. Any questions you have he will answer!
I love Brother Martin! I feel like his class is very clear. I learned very well in his class, because it was not based around memorization and testing, but rather around application. Brother Martin teaches thoroughly how to apply data and overall his class if very enjoyable. His class is the perfect mixture of learning and entertainment!
I love the enthusiasm he has for helping students. The class organization stressed me out. It gets changed a lot of it is hard to stay on top of deadlines. No late work is accepted. His answers to questions are very long, you'll need people to help you take good notes if you're not good at following long lectures. He is very willing to talk & help
I usually have a hard time with stuff like research because of the way my brain works, but he really teaches to the one person who may not understand. In other words, he explains things in great detail. This may frustrate you if you understand and are ready to move on, but for me this is why I was able to learn and actually become excited.
Research methods was a dense class but Brother Martin was a good teacher. He makes an effort to adapt his teaching styles to what students say they need.
Decently nice guy but he tends to unnecessarily over complicate the simplest of things... and the class seems to go on forever.
This course is difficult. Brother Martin does a wonderful job making it understandable and fun. I would definatly take this course again from brother Martin. Get ready to work.
It was a very good course. It was the first semester not using excel, so some parts were kind of disorganized, but I imagined that it will be better next semester. I also got really stressed at the end of the semester because everything is due after midterm. He cares a lot and is willing to help you.
Brother Martin is a great professor, really knows his stuff and will stop and helps answer your questions. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Stay ahead of the assignments and make sure you try working on your midterm as soon as you can and the final application demonstration.
This class didnchallenge me. It is fast paced and feels like one is in English and stats class at the same time. Besides that, I really enjoyed the practice and the research application that was implemented. Ask questions that will keep the class on track. Study really hard for the exams especially on excel and the Jasp software.
Great personality and teaching style. I Missed class too many times and that will take a chunk out of my grade. Make sure you attend class. He's willing to help outside of class.
Lots of students hate the course because they don't have the best attitude about it. To be honest, I had that attitude myself. But Brother Martin helped me to actually like statistics which I didn't think I would say. The material is difficult, but if you put the work in you will learn a lot.
Loved the teacher, he cares for his students and he makes research simple and fun, but the class is a little unorganized and it's hard to know what grade you really have in the class until the very end.
There were times that I wish that requirements would have been more clear for assignments. In addition to that, there is a lot of work required for this class so be prepared to stay busy. There are only two tests but he gives you plenty of time to take them and he lets you do corrections on the midterm.
This is a hard class; but he genuinely cares about his students. He has taken time out of his day to help me figure out some issues; with the course. If you are having issues just go and talk to him. This class makes you work for a good grade; and it is possible to get one. There were some issues with assignments but he works to fix any issues.
The course material is very difficult and work-intensive, but Brother Martin does a good job making the material understandable and enjoyable. If you have taken a statistics course before this class, the workload and material should be bearable. If you have not, I would highly advise doing that before taking his research methods class.
Psych 302 is a very difficult class. When you write your Research Paper drafts it is not uncommon to not know what exactly you're supposed to be writing about, so it would be nice to have some more explanation about that. HOWEVER! Brother Martin is a fantastic teacher. He really cares about his students, and he will do whatever he can to help you.
Brother Martin is a very nice guy, very kind, very caring. He always wants to be helpful - he responds to emails and talks after class to answer my questions. The material is difficult, you need to show up to class and take notes or you will struggle.
He is great as a teacher and loves his class and students. He does not accept late work at all. You need to keep up on the homework or you will not do well. He requires a lot of out of class homework that takes up much time.
Brother Martin is a really great person, he loves the subject, and he really wants you to succeed. With that in mind, this class is hard. It seems hard to relate the textbook related homework to the major class assignment homework. If you are not interested in research then this class will feel like being dragged through the streets in a swimsuit.
Brother Martin is a good person and easy to get along with. The class itself is jam packed with work because you have to cover so much in 14 short weeks. It is fast-paced through the whole semester. It is manageable if you take his advice of looking ahead two weeks in advance. Because it's fastpaced, Brother Martin sometimes bounces around too much
Brother Martin is a fantastic teacher and truly cares about the students. My only concern is that we spent a lot of time talking about what we were going to do in class and not enough time actually doing it. However, when we do get to the material, his instruction is useful and engaging. Take time to talk to him outside of class and you'll do fine.
Brother Martin works with his students and makes class fun. He had a lot of difficult assignments to work through, but he understands that and helps students through the process. Make sure you take notes in class, and do the assignments. He advises students to look up and prepare for homework 2 weeks in advance because there are schedules to keep.
Brother Martin is very caring about the student. He is a little unorganized and can take a long time to grade things in class. This class is a difficult course to understand but Brother Martin teaches very well. He knows his stuff
There are not that many assignments, but the assignments you do have are really hard and take a long period of time. It is all graded very difficulty and you will not know how you are doing in the class until the semester is over.
Almost every class period we had to read a chapter out of the book and then answer some questions and had a quiz over that chapter. There was a lot of research, like finding research articles, and trying to comprehend the material was slightly difficult. Even though it was difficult, Brother Martin did his best to explain the material to us.
The class is fast paced but there are plenty of resources to help you. He is very willing to meet out of class and help you. He is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the topic. Great teacher but you need to apply yourself in the class.
Brother Martin is very helpful and wants you to succeed. The class was interesting and he did a good job at helping us learn more about research. I think the class could have been better by spacing out more of the work. There was not very much work the first half and then it got slammmed the second half. More guidance on papers would have nice too
He is a very kind and respected man! Though, this course is really difficult mainly because it's just confusing. Brother Martin is energetic, but drags his lectures out and makes things more complicated in explanations. Not too much work throughout the semester, but the midterm and final work load is very overwhelming. Be prepared to teach yourself
Brother Martin is very passionate about statistics and has lots of knowledge on the subject. Because of that, he can move rather quickly, though he does his best to explain things multiple ways. Work for class is weighted heavily to the end of the semester, with very little to do at the beginning. Instructions are sometimes difficult to understand.
Professor Martin is an excellent teacher. Sometimes he can talk quickly as he gets excited about a certain topic in the lecture, but his skill at teaching, and his ability to personalize lessons to each class really is a refreshing turn for the better.
I enjoyed the class a lot. Bro. Martin does have a passion and may get off topic, but he can be straight forward with teaching. Very well in explaining, and will answer with any question you give him. SO, come prepared to class, and you will learn.
Brother Martin knows his stuff. However, he loves to lecture and goes very quickly through the material. He rushes through things and assumes we know or remember the material. When a question is asked it isn't always answered. He's energetic and fun and is extremely smart. It's difficult to keep up though. His instructions aren't very clear.
Going to use a lot of APA citation but its a great class.
Cares a lot about the class and wants to make sure students understand whats going on. Occasionally over-explains, which soaks up class time, but he means well and it does get the point across. Sets clear expectations for assignments and due dates, responds quickly to emails. Also, looks like a cross between Josh Brolin and Sam from Supernatural .
Brother Martin has a great capacity to work with the individual both inside and outside of class. He has a passion and enthusiasm that made me more motivated to learn the material. He is kind and caring towards the students. The only criticisms that I have are he may keep you overtime a few minutes and he goes on tangents. Please reduce tangents
Bro. Martin loves what he does. There is no questioning that. Research is his thing. The problem with class is that he gets so excited about the solution that he gets lost on the way there. It could be because it was a transition semester, but the way he did everything online was pretty rough. It was hard to know exactly what to do.
You can tell that Brother Martin genuinely loves what he is talking about, which is great. But, I feel that he makes things more confusing than they should be from when/how assignments are due and explaining things regarding what we're learning in class. Also, the grade book doesn't show you your actual current grade is so it made it frustrating.
Brother Martin is a great guy! I enjoyed him as a person. However, his class felt very disorganized. The final assignment was hard understand what was expected.
Brother Martin is an overall good teacher, he is really passionate about the class. It shouldn't be t too bad if you come to class and stay caught up with the assignments. He requires a lot of participation.
He is really excited about the material and wants you to learn it. Sometimes he gets so excited that he explains things so thoroughly that it becomes confusing, but he means well. Make sure you show up to class, really helps you understand the content. Much better option than taking the class online.
He's a good teacher and teaches the material really well. He was willing to meet with me in person and explain more in detail what I wasn't understanding. A great teacher that makes the material enjoyable and I would definitely take him as a professor again.
so the one thing is you have to pay attention on how to do things its importnat that you understand teh concept or you will get lost.
There is a lot of work in this class, come prepared to work through the homework that was assigned. Don't stress too bad, Bro. Martin is very good at explaining every detail that you need to know, he makes this class fun and makes you want to learn. He is very helpful and understanding. He is very understanding, just don't miss a deadline.
This is the second class I've taken from Brother Martin, and I have no regrets! I love his teaching style -- he makes sure that you understand why the material is applicable for you, there's lots of in class discussion, and the tests and assignments are designed in a way that you actually use what you know, which is great. Definitely take his class
This class was pretty difficult for me, but I think it was a fair amount of work given that it is a college level course. That being said, sometimes he went a bit fast for me, and I couldn't mentally keep up until I was pretty confused. He was enthusiastic about the subject, but sometimes went too fast. It's a pretty difficult college class.
It's good information to learn and the professor is good at clarifying info, but he makes you work for it.
Brother Martin is a very good teacher that cares a lot about his students. He works hard to clarify concepts and is good at simplifying those concepts. The class is not easy but Bro Martin made it a little more enjoyable. The last two weeks of the semester are insane! Way to much work IMO but if you start early enough you should be good.
Bro Martin is a nice guy, really passionate about the subject matter & helps you to be excited about it as he knows that some students may find it "boring". If you miss more than 2 or 3 times you will be behind and may miss valuable attendance quizzes. He doesn't accept late work, which is understandable but was hard for me as I missed some things.
One phrase: G.O.A.T.
Brother Martin is a good guy. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. I felt like he was pretty disorganized though and that this class wasn't a priority to him. He doesn't give feedback on assignments. Most of his grades are completion grades which are nice, but you never really know how much material you actually know. Nice guy.
Nice guy, but very unorganized and confusing. Even with hour and half long classes, he rarely actually taught or had us practice what we needed to know for the tests. Didn't go over 1/3 of the material with us in class, so we were required to go to an hour of tutoring for a few weeks to learn how to write the final paper. Didn't respond to emails.
Brother Martin is awesome! He teaches a difficult required class for the Psychology department, but does everything he can to help students succeed.
Have you ever asked your dad a homework question and he just dumped every random thing he's ever learned on you and it all goes over your head? That's what taking a class from Pro. Martin is like. I took a Light and Sound class from him, which isn't his usual element. Luckily it's his last time teaching this course. Maybe he's better at psychology!
Experience Research is a good but hard class due to the study you have to conduct in groups and then present at the RCW. A lot of readings to do like annotative bibliographies, but I do think Brother Martin is Amazing especially since he took the class at the last moment so that more student could get in due to it being mandatory for graduation.
Bro Martin is pretty great! He no longer teaches this course, from what I hear, but he did a good job helping us understand the concepts. He's friendly and helpful and knows what he's talking about.
Please watch the videos he put up. A lot of your questions can be answered if you watch those videos. Think before you ask questions. Maybe all those questions you ask are all in the textbook and the videos. Don't waste everyone's time because you don't bother watching videos. Hard class so that means you have to work hard.
First, I wanna say bless this mans heart. He means well. This class made me understand you can cry from being angry. Class was mandatory, though I learned practically nothing in class. Though he knows what he is talking about, he doesn't know how to teach. Mandatory tutor meetings, even though it seems I knew the most at these - huge problem.
Attendance extra credit. ADD style lectures. He kept saying how there wasn't enough time to do everything because spring semester is shorter than any other semester, then takes up class time ranting... He seems as though he has taken too much on his plate - he spends half of class outlining what we want to learn instead of having a lesson plan
Really nice, willing to work with you, I just had to put in double the effort into this class than I should have had to. If he hadn't make attendance mandatory I would give a way higher score, but it felt like he was wasting our time.
He is always giving helpful feedback and giving you opportunities to correct mistakes - (I learned from this-not from his lectures). His teaching style OUTSIDE the classroom is amazing - he SHOULD BE an online teacher for this course. Provides all the learning material online, so you can learn outside of class. Fun teacher, just distracted easily
He's awesome. Class is more based on you doing the reading and then asking any questions you have and he explains things different ways so it's easier to understand. If you don't do the reading, yikes. He gives study guides and his tests are challenging (but so is physics which he was kinda having to teach) but I learned a lot from him. Solid guy.
Bro. Martin is a genius, but what I detested was how he could never keep a train of thought. He rambles about nothing for the entire period and keeps you after class to tell you the "important things he forgot". Tests are absurd and his methods don't work. I wasn't learning the concepts; I was floundering how to memorize a bunch of facts to pass.
Professor Martin is one of my favourite teachers at BYUI. He genuinely cares about his students, is enthused about what he teaches, is approachable, and understanding. I would definitely take another class from him again.
Brother Martin was extremely passionate about the subject and it made it fun to learn from him. The one thing I would say is that he added participation grades at the end of the semester, without most of us knowing. You have to go to class, even though its not mandatory. The homework was usually not too hard, 3 days a week. Overall, a great class.
He cares about his students and is willing to work with you if you'll work with him. He can go off on tangents at times because he loves the subjects so much. He is willing to use class time to answer any questions you have. You could skip class, but I wouldn't recommend it because he sometimes does in-class assignments that are points.
There are a lot of quizzes every week and short papers due once a week. Fun professor, only that his lectures are boring and he rambles a lot. So if you like a professor that stays on topic he is not for you. If you like a professor who is fun and spontanize and just a great time all around, he is for you. Tests are in testing center.
Although attendance is not exactly required every few weeks he gives an in class assignment that will be account for attendance so you might as well go. Hes such a great teacher! He really works hard so that everyone will succeed. Please take him if you can!!
Very unorganized. Wont know accurate grade until after the class is over. Tests on stuff taught in his other class which as a transfer student sucked for me. Also sucks for people who just came back to college. Talks about his personal life. Spends the whole hour and a half class talking nonsense. Doesnt go over anything so your confused.
I loved his tests for this class - especially because he lets you redo some problems to get some points back (helped me correct things I didn't understand). He was really smart and understanding, but he doesn't focus very well, which is frustrating. But his classes are super chill, but most learning takes place outside the classroom.
He will have 57 different grades in the gradebook by the end of the 14 week semester. On top of all the assignments, he does not accept late grades. Point being that this class takes A LOT of time. Lastly, if you do not like to participate in class, for whatever reason, he forces people to participate in class even if they do not want to.
Brother Martin has a lot of personality. He really cares about his students and wants them to understand the material. Unfortunately, that causes him to over-explain things, which often made it more confusing. He also focuses on theory in class and then tests for application. If you take initiative and are good with computers, you should be fine.
Although attendance isnt exactly required some random days hell have you do an assignment that you have to turn in that counts as attendance. Hes hilarious and super awesome to work with. If you put in the work and effort youll do great in his class!
Brother Martin is a really chill guy. Easy homework and quizzes. You have to go to class for short essays on certain days.
Great at answering questions and gives good lectures. He can't focus as long, so he goes off on tangents, which is fine, unless he's trying to explain something important. His exams are hard, but he gives them back so you can do corrections, which is really helpful. If you don't understand something, see the tutor early!
I loved how Brother Martin formatted his classes. He expected that you read the chapter and then he would guide the lecture by what we needed. He always asked what questions we had and would then teach to that. His ability to teach extemporaneously shows how great of a teacher he is
This is the best Research Methods course. Brother Martin has assignements from the chapter but he doesn't have your traditional tests. He does two data demonstrations where you get a couple days to manipulate, clean, and present findings from a data set. He prepares you well for it and it helped me learn so much more than a mulitple choise test!
Brother Martin is the best! The whole class is a research project all the way from identifying the project through a poster presentation and research paper. This is very doable. He treats it like a job, so you do the work until you understand and it is sufficient. You final grade is way more about completion and adequacy than about a final grade
Honestly the worst professor I have had at BYUI. He is so disorganized and his lectures make zero sense. The material was actually fairly simple and easy to learn if you just researched it alone. His teaching will only confuse you. Highly disorganized. Nice guy though.
While it was probably the easiest class I've taken, all of your work happened in like the last two weeks of class. We did practically nothing all semester, and then has presentations, a paper, and the final project all due within a couple days of each other. He had a hard time focusing on this class, and it showed at the end of the semester.
Brother Martin is awesome! His class is somewhat difficult, but if you attend the lectures and take notes you will do well. He prepares you really well for the exams and really wants to help you succeed. His lectures are interesting and he knows what he is talking about.
Brother Martin is kind. Horrible at giving a clear outline of expectations necessary for hw. I got an A but still dont have anything good to say. I taught myself everything
Over explains things to the point where it's just not helpful. he will literally beat the dead horse to the point of uselessness. the worst part of the class was the reading assignments. he makes you read a chapter and answer the chapter questions at the end and it takes HOURS. Basically, you teach yourself everything.
Brother Martin is really entertaining, but sometimes it is hard to follow his lectures. His material is great, but if you aren't actively engaged throughout all of class you'll find that you've probably missed something important. So long as you do the required coursework it's not too bad and he's really fun to have as a professor.
He is really excited about the topic so he tends to talk fast and go on tangents. He is happy to answer any and all questions (even if they barely relate to the lesson). Utilize the tutor center. It saved me.
Great class. Bro Martin is very passionate about what he teaches which means he goes off on tangents, but it keeps the class interesting and exciting. Super chill guy to talk to after class. He is always trying to help his students whether that be breaking down teaching material or giving extra credit.
He is one of the best teachers at BYUI. I absolutely love him. He makes class really fun and expalin things really well. The absolute best!
His lectures are scattered and not easy to understand. He also seems disorganized in his approach to teaching. However, he does have good knowledge of the subject.
Brother Martin is pretty good as a professor; I'd suggest taking Research Methods online instead--I've heard it's easier. This class was hard and I didn't enjoy it a ton but it's required. Brother Martin is as good as any.
Brother Martin is a great guy! Since you will have to take research methods from him because he's the only teacher in the psych department that teaches it, you need to know He gets off topic a lot and is very wordy with his explanations. Also read the directions in assignments VERY CAREFULLY or you'll be confused.
Brother Martin is a distracted fellow. I really like him and I find him fairly engaging, but he will go off for like 30 minutes explaining a simple concept, and will completely forget to teach something entirely different that shows up on the homework later with "as discussed in class". lol. He's super nice, just hard to follow sometimes.
I found his class to be better than what people are saying here. Everything is resubmittable multiple times for up to a week after the TA has graded it, but my biggest pet peeve was the TA because he was always behind on grading and then we couldnt resubmit, but overall, just follow the video tutorials, go to class, tutoring, and you'll be fine.
Helping and caring professional. I would absolutely love to take another class from him.
I have never met someone who believes that they possess so much knowledge and that others don't. Going to class has no point, and homework is made to take as much of your time as possible, long and unnecessary. He seems like he'd be an okay guy outside of school except he would think he's be right about everything
Not a fan of teachers who try to trick students and make them stumble, so they can "grow". Does not care about students grade but claims that he does as he lets you resubmit assignments after they have been graded, however they aren't graded for 3-4 weeks and it is hard to remember what the assignment even was.
Brother Martin is great at explaining the class materials and concepts and cares about his student's success! Has a lot of helpful resources for you to use and review at any time.
Hated the class, but loved the professor. Having someone who is passionate about the content really makes or breaks a class you don't want to take. He is clear in his explanations and willing to explain again and again. The only problem I had was he can be a little long-winded, but other than that he was great. You can't pass w/o coming in person.
Professor Martin will not baby you. But he also won't answer any of your questions clearly. I found this class to be easier until the last few weeks of the semester where you are doing a research paper, poster, and presentation all at once so be prepared. He takes a long time to grade things. He's a great person but I'm not awed by his teaching.
This is the worst class I have taken in my 5 semesters here. Brother Martin is condescending and unhelpful, and will not answer your questions. He tries to sound hyper-intelligent but makes no sense in his lectures. I am typically an all-A (1 or 2 Bs) student who works hard for my grade, and it was a huge struggle to keep an A- in this class. 0/5
Dr. Martin is very smart and knowledgeable about the subjects of this class, but this just means that he explains everything he can, and it can feel like getting hit by a wall of information. A lot of the information he shares is irrelevant to the homework or projects, so its hard to tell whats important for the class, and what's important to him.
He genuinely wants to help you in the class and with understanding the material. He might stress you out while trying to prepare you for the tests, but while they're difficult, they're completely doable.
Brother Martin did a fine job from my experience. His instructions were unclear at times and getting good grades on assignments was tough, but not necessarily his fault given it was a research methods class. Lectures in class were pretty much just what is in the videos.
Brother Martin is a great teacher and does provide amazing insight into the world of research. While his lectures can be a bit long they are extremely insightful. Only negative was grading was very behind by the end of the semester. Other than that I recommend Brother Martin, just be attentive and take lots of good notes.
I loved Bro Martin's class so much! The content was interesting and I enjoyed his class a lot. There were quite a few assignments but he went over them if anyone had questions. He explained the concepts thoroughly and really does want you to succeed. If you take his class, take advantage of the extra credit and resubmissions.
Firstly, if you haven't taken 302 with martin in person, don't take his class. Martin acts like he has no time for you, grades like he has no time for you, and shows up to class late like he has no time for it. He is condescending and rude to select students, and very arrogant. His lack of empathy made this class very emotionally taxing.
He is a tough cookie; he expects you to do stuff on your own. This is NOTHING like a normal psych class, he treats it like a HIGH level class; you'll be in a group and doing a research project all semester. I heard the other professors are easier, so maybe take this one from them instead. If you took his Research Methods class, you'll be okay tho.
Not helpful, condescending, goes off on tangents and was very behind. Would not take from him again ever. Made a very confusing class even more confusing.
The material was fine, I struggled with the teacher. He puts all the materials online and would just make class a discussion. He wasn't clear when answering questions and would go on tangents a lot, I was in person, but was also made aware he purposefully made his online class harder. Wouldn't suggest.
Brother Martin's class was engaging, though he can be long-winded at times. He genuinely cares about student success and provides helpful resources, including video tutorials and opportunities for resubmission. Unstuckstudy ai proved useful for study prep alongside the textbook.
Great teacher and makes it really interesting to learn even if you are not a psychology major.
I've taken classes and worked with Brother Martin. He's fun to talk to and very knowledgeable but often goes on tangents, gives vague guidance, and lacks humility. He held us to a 'no excuses' standard at times (which he would fail as a teacher). He rarely admitted fault, making collaboration difficult. Great guy outside the classroom.
Brother Martin really knows his stuff, and that's easy to see! His teaching style was difficult for me though. You are expected to figure out the assignments largely on your own, while class time is spent listening to lectures that are often just over everyone's head. Tutoring was helpful.
He is a nice and fun guy but his assignments are hard to understand and he doesn't really teach much in class. He gets off track easily. He's open outside of class for appointments, and he only sometimes gives direct answers to questions. I think this is the hardest class in the psych dept, partly due to of the material and partly due to Bro Martin
Brother Martin was super lecture-heavy but just rambled the whole time. We never actually talked about any of the readings we did that week, and then when it was time for a test, he would say we should have listened during lectures. His test are so freaking hard and confusing so good luck!
He is a good man, but I think his teaching style could be more organized. He always told us what he wants to go through in each class, but he NEVER really go through. He expects students to ask him questions but he answers questions like he has no time for you. I basically live in the tutoring center for the semester I took his class.
The class is all lectures which are incoherent and unhelpful, so I went to tutoring every chance I got. I called this class my coding class because you use a complicated coding program. Assignments usually took 7+ hours to complete and grading was harsh. Brother Martin is a great guy but not the best teacher. I would recommend taking it online.
This class was absolutely horrendous. Professor Martin is probably a great guy, but is not a good teacher. He would say if we listened to lectures we would do great, but all he does is rant and not answer questions. I only learned things in tutoring. I went twice and week and it's the reason I passed. He was quite condescending and unhelpful.
Brother Martin was really good! He was very clear and prepared us well for the exams. I really enjoyed his class and I would take it again
Brother Martin seems like a great guy, but he is not a good teacher. His assignments are confusing. He really needs a lesson plan for classes, because he talks about nothing and goes on tangents. He barely teaches, and you are going to be teaching yourself. Unfortunately, no one else teaches this class. Go to tutoring, and attend open lab.
This class was very scattered. Grades were constantly behind and honestly never knew where I stood in that class. R studio was confusing and in class there wasn't much help! There was a few classes where I thought coming to class was pointless besides the attendance grade. Would recommend taking it from someone else.
Honestly, he is a tougher grader, and the tests aren't something you can just wing. He shows you what isn't acceptable, and it is a lot. However, I think that he cares a whole lot about his students. Just take good notes and get a tutor you really aren't getting it. The lectures are fun to be in, and he makes funny comments. He was behind on grades
Pro. Martin is not effective at teaching R nor stats. He does not explain the material, and is a really specific grader. It was an awful experience to be in his class, I learned absolutely nothing and simply depended on my notes (all tests and HW are open notes) with no retention of the material due to his lack of explanations and textbook readings
Brother Martin is a great guy, and a great teacher. I really like how he explains things. It made the class so much easier for me. Beware if you aren't tech-savvy, though, because most of this course revolves around knowing how to use "R Studio", which is a whole lot of coding and processing errors. I really, really struggled with it.
