Absolutely hilarious! He will say anything and always has fun stories to share in class. A great prof who makes class interesting!
Teaches the foundations but also tries to open your mind to other possible ways of seeing and interpreting things. Uses knowledge of behind the scenes crazy shenanigans that you can use as hooks to remember unfamiliar material. He's a trip!
Awsome teacher. One of the only classes I attend to because of the stories I know Im gonna hear. Class isnt that hard because he makes you want to know what he is talking about. He also makes you want to know about him;)

Interesting guy
I am glad to note that I am not the only one who is completely in love with Professor Mattson. He was by far the best teacher I have ever had at this university. He does his best to accomodate, and is such an easy person to talk to.
Hey I’m a jock never had a philosophy course and this guy got me to know what epistemology & ontology (!!!) are. Professor, you’d be proud -- I talked about Foucaults analysis of power with my frat bros at a kegger!!!! HA!

It was no surprise to me when I saw on the news that Professor Mattson was named one of the most inspiring profs in Ontario and one of 4 at UoW. I've taken so many of his classes I am practically majoring in him. I never miss a class. Never had a prof that cared so much about students and teaching.
Professor Mattson is one of the best professors I've had at the university. I look forward to going to his class and enjoy his examples and videos. He makes the concept easier to understand when we can relate to them in interesting ways!

This guy is horrible....anybody who claims this guy can teach is out of their minds...he simply reads the text book in class and knows nothing about the topic... horrible..horrible...no other way to describe him!!! do NOT take a class with him...he is easy...BUT its not worth it!!!!TRUST ME!
Teaches with great enthusiasm. Went way out of his way to help me when I asked. Looking back, I can't believe how much I learned. The little journey Mattson took us on made my brain grow. As for the hater on here, you can prolly guess what grade s/he got. You get out what you put in. Do the work!
As a fourth year student, i can tell you that professor mattson is the best prof at the university. He is truly dedicated to his teaching and cares about each of his students. If you don't like him, it's probably because you actually have to come to class to do well.
My mother was dying of cancer & it felt like everything was falling apart.If you are having problems go see Professor Mattson right away!I still had to do the work, but he he gave me lots of advise & by the end I was able to up my grade.He was the most understanding & helpful of all my profs. If you read this Professor mattson, thank you SO much!!!
Nice guy but terrible prof. I asked for help and he referred me to his GA who could not answer my questions. Took a week to answer his emails and just read his power point notes. Lots of movies. VERY BORING
One of the most energetic & enthusiastic lecturers on campus. Uses great memorable examples. Never had any problem getting a hold of him after class, during office hours, 24 hours a day via instant messenger, or through email. If he just read form the text he would be truly amazing since it was closed on the table! (i.e. don't believe the hater)
I've been both a TA & Student of Prof Mattson and really enjoyed both and learned a lot. The proper procedure is to go to the TA who graded your exam first, then see the prof if you're not satisfied. Email is fine, but if you really need to see a prof, don't be lazy: go to their office hours IN PERSON! He gets literally gets hundreds of emails.

He is a very nice guy but VERY hard! he definitly goes overboard with the readings! like over 400 pages an exam to study and read from oh and lectures! thats a lot! if you have the time to read like crazy then take him! overall hes a good prof just piles on the work...
Took more than 2 weeks to get grades posted. Not that hard for a scantron. Rambles a lot, could be a 1 hour class, instead of 3 hours. Goes overboard with readings!! 12 chapters on a final exams plus previous material is overwhelming, considering the chapters are 50 pgs long.
2 wks? Grades were up the next class day as he promised (28th). We're going through the book 2 chs/wk. Pretty standard at a university level. Nothing extra. Maybe you should come to class--he's said 5 times that the final covers from the last exam on. He clearly knows a lot about the area. I find him really enthusiastic & entertaining for 8:30am.
He is a nice guy, but... he expects a lot out of students! over 400pages you are responsible for on the final.. thats a lot to read, study,and learn when you have 4 other classes! If you dont have a lot of time on your hand avoid him! The class average on the midterm (worth 50% of your mark) was 66% ouch! thats rough for a second year student!
I can't believe people are whining about the workload for this class. All of the marks are 100% multiple choice. You don't even need to go to class, just read the notes that he puts online and read the key terms in the textbook. This class is a joke if you have half a brain.

This professor is one of the worst professor's I have ever had in University. His tests are extremely hard and when the class average is in the 50's he doesn't find it necessary to curve the marks at all. LEARN HOW TO TEST!

Pretty standard multiple choice exam format and he curved the average up a step. Some people just harsh on prof's when they get a bad grade. Don't let it scare you off taking a class with Mattson. You'll learn a lot more than with other prof's, that's why we're at a university. Otherwise, just buy a good grade online & get a worthless degree!

He isn't easy, but he's passionate, enthusiastic, & I learned more than I have from anyone else. I always looked forward and made it to class! (Unusual for me.) I won't get the best grade, but my brain is a lot fuller. Not only can I now explain psych theory, but I can now also critique it. Very entertaining, incredibly engaging: Take him!

Prof Mattson is very enthusiastic and humorous (swears alot), but he is unclear about exams, makes you know info and then does not test on it, and makes your life confusing! Only take it if you want the challenge and a good laugh.
Learned alot, never missed class because he's a great lecturer, and he's always available (office hours, email, instant messenger) so there's no excuse not for not getting clarification. Obviously he can't test on everything, but he makes it pretty clear what will be on exams & plenty of practise with pre-exam assignments if you pay attn. Take him!
Great lectures. Learned info but also how to evaluate it critically (i.e., stage theories, asjustment & development) which gave me a deeper understanding. Not a prof for slackers. I like how he basically gives you exam questions beforehand in lectures, exam info handouts, and in pass fail assigments first. I'll never forget Albert Ellis!!!

He is a very entertaining lecturer who is vulgar when needed. He always finds a way to bring sex and a **** into the lecture. Watches TONS of movies, most for the entire length of the film - can be boring but hes always excited. Tests are easy multiple choice and tough but passable essays if you can BS well. He's better for Soc of Sex than P&A!
He is a a really entertaining and engaging prof. Best thing is that his classes go a little deeper than most and aren't just the same boring repetition I've gotten in the department, over and over. I really learned a lot of new information and perspectives. First class that I ever looked forward to going to.
Who knew there was so much to learn in this area? Very engaging & he's very open & approachable. Structured the course to encourage keeping up. I am glad I did! Learned a lot & had a good time all the while. I'm glad I got to take him and his class!
This prof expects ALOT from you. Assign's every wk that require hrs of reading, take-home midterms that require 3 essay q's. Plus, one major 14 pg paper. Movies every class that arent tested on. He expects online discussions or you will lose marks. This class is informative, although a unrealistic amount of work for taking 4 other classes.

so full of himself, thinks that his lecture great, but they are so boring, i couldn't find him interesting, gives mid term 50% and final 50%, u will curse everytime you are done with his exams, the text is not that hard but he adds journals that are so hard to understand, don't take him he is very unhelpful and waste of time
I really look forward to his lectures and have learned a lot more about critically evaluating psych in ways I had never even heard of before. Most of the articles have been pretty str8 forward. I reread the one that stumped me after he explained the main points of the article and it suddenly made sense. I feel like I am actually learning something!
Scott is hard. be sure to read all chapter- lectures aren't that important. Watch movies for M/C part of test. Needs to learn how to test properly. Grades should be higher.

Absolutely horrible. 50% Midterm, 50% Final. Always has multiple readings and movies plus regular text readings and lectures. 3 hour class- lectured for about 1 hour to 1 hour and 1/2 put a movie on then peaced out and left his classroom assistant to turn the movies off. We pay money to be in that class, total waste of money and time. Bell curved9%
Learned a lot both from him and the films he showed, totally relevant and kept class from being boring straight 3 hr lecture. Pretty standard testing format for a night course. Prepared me for higher level courses.

Pretty good lecturer and very knowledgeable on the topic. I liked the videos; they were relevant and 3 hours of straight lecturing would suck. I think everyone should take this class at some point in University, It's highly valuable. Grading was a bit rough, two 45% tests and 10% for discussion posts. It's a big class though I get it.
Scott is HARD. The MC questions are worded to throw you off. Know everything. If you studied from the lectures ONLY you probably failed. Stay for the films because he shows a LOT of them and test questions come from them. Write as much as you can for Essay section. Part marks are better than 0. The discussion points are EASY ten marks. Do them!
Great course, learned a lot, great lecturer, kept things interesting and with humour. Tests were not easy, but plenty of hints if you go to class. This was a retake after dropping it with a terrible prof before. Lucked out with Dr. Matson
LOVED PROFESSOR MATSON! He is probably my favorite professor so far at the U, he puts all his heart into the lecture and makes class interesting. Yes the midterm and final are 45/45 but seriously if you study and go to class paying attention its easy to score a +80 on the exam. Highly recommend.
He made a three hour class at 8am go by pretty fast with clear and intriguing lectures. He's witty as well and just seems like an overall cool guy. The tests honestly are not difficult, just do the readings and review beforehand. Examples from the lectures will be used. He has me wanting to take 46-240 next year just to have him as a prof again!

Good professor, but incredibly difficult. Lectures well, varies it up with videos/movies, encourages discussion. Study hard, though, or the exams will wreck you.
Really nice to have a smaller class with Mattson, where he could be more conversational. Very responsive with students and encourages discussion. everything was clearly laid out in his extremely comprehensive course outline, including assessment.Going to class is critical doing well on the exams. Difficult midterm, but he curved it to compensate.
In the four years I've gone to this university, no other professor has ever gone out of their way to tell me that I did a good job on a paper or an assignment, even though I am an A student. Not once. Not ever. Mattson not only noticed, but personally emailed me in both courses to congratulate and encourage me. The U needs more profs like him
Nice guy, tough class. You will read forever and you'll still wonder what he's trying to ask you on exams. Multiple choice are hard, and the essay questions are impossible.
Okay, this guy is awful. I understand that you are not going to get a wonderful professor for every single class you have. However, I don't like going to class to be read to. I knew how to read in Kindergarten, so chances are, I know what the slides are saying. You don't have to read them and ramble on about them pretending you know it. OMG. Bad.
You MUST read the textbook. And do the learning objectives. I did the learning objectives using the textbook and adding what was on the lecture notes. Short answer is fairly easy, they are usually on the syllabus (examples of questions). Multiple choice is a bit confusing but he's not as difficult as everyone says.
Really enjoying the class. Learning a lot. Once you realize he has a sarcastic sense of humour, pretty funny. Way detailed course outline but lays everything out. Had him for intro. Went to see him for study help this time. No one had ever taught me. Did what he said, scored in the top 20. Personally emailed congratulations. First time for both!
Mattson is an amazing prof! He has an intelligent sense of humour that any dork would love. Yes, he's tough, but he wants you to actually learn! He expects you to want to get a good grade and put the effort in. I've always written very professionally in my emails to him and have never waited long for a response (especially during his office hours.)
Had him for 3 of my classes and he is very fair. Went to office hours and regularly met him after class and he still didnt know my name. Do your participation on time and it will really boost your mark. Midterms are absolutely brutal, lots of reading with the articles but still came out with a good grade!
It's all about sex: anatomy, positions, STIs, gender roles, hetero, homo, pansexuality. Mid-term was essay multiple choice worth 45. Final 45. 10 for online discussion posts. Very funny prof. Very approachable after class during office hours. Responds to emails promptly. Everything is in the syllabus so read it before emailing. Read text!
He's a good professor and he went really in depth off of examples. The only thing that bugged me a lot was it was identical to the textbook. Yes it was fairly easy to study because your notes match exactly to the book but it got kind of boring. When he lectures sometimes he seems unprepared as he reads right off the slides.
I had Dr. Mattson for Sex and Gender and I can say that the class was generally a lot of work through out the semester, despite there being only one midterm and a final. There is a lot of reading to do so do not fall behind on that. Overall, he is fair but, his exams could be a little more easier.
I had this guy for 3 different classes, Dev Adult psych, Learning and Behaviour, and Sociology of sexualities and got an A+ in all of them, his test a rough but he always curves, and it's wonderful. His curves make all my low 80's into 90's you just gotta do better than the rest of the class and you are set!!!
Midterm and exam were brutal. Make sure to read the chapters multiple times because most of the multiple choice questions are very detailed. Essay questions are long and focus on powerpoint slides. Articles aren't very necessary to read. Stay for the movies! Discussion forums are very necessary and an easy 10%.
Rambles all through class and gets very off topic easily. Wont actually teach you what you need to know. You will watch movies every week, most times they're not related to the material. The tests are not that bad, if you study you will do fine. Biggest pet peeve, was that he would not answer emails, even important ones. Impossible to get ahold of
I loved that he mixed things up with media and clips, made Facebook less tempting. It was all totally relevant to the course, but maybe some people don't really pay attention. I think he said he had 900 students so email response might take a while, but he has an extremely detailed syllabus and I never had to wait to talk during his office hours
Hated this class. Makes you come to class with an in class assignment each lecture, then shows media clips or movies for 80% of the lecture. His slides are clustered and confusing, He made it very difficult to sit through a 3 hour night lecture. He thinks his class is the most important you have, get ready to spend a lot of time on reading.

Professor Mattson is an awesome teacher, but don't expect not to read! He's makes you work for the grade, but what did you expect, you're in university. The topics are always interesting, and movie questions pop up on exams for those who stick around to watch them. Great prof, I would recommend taking future classes with him if you can
If you're interested in the subject, attend class, and learn the material you will easily pass. People say the tests are tough but I didn't find them too hard. They cover a lot of info but if you studied what was taught in class you will do fine. Very clear speaker, ask questions in class and he will answer in detail. Funny, amusing, and easy-going
Dr. Mattson is fantastic. He does make you work for the grade but he really instills valuable knowledge into his students, provided they listen. Long lectures are out of his control (registrar decides on these things) so you really can't blame it on him, and he does a good job of breaking it up with relevant media pieces.
Knows the material well and tries his best to keep everyone engaged during the lectures. 3 hour classes are hard to pay attention no matter what. Regardless, he uses a lot of multi-media sources to fully communicate the course aspects to his students. Tests cover a lot of material - go to class and READ TEXTBOOK. Participation marks are KEY!
I absolutely loved him! He is a very kind professor, and makes the class interesting. The exams, however, was quite difficult. You have to really prepare for them. Overall, I thought he was great!

Dr. Mattson is one of the best professors I've had. His lectures are very interesting, he answers any questions you have, and will even stay over his office hours to help students. He is an extremely fair grader. Exams may be hard if one doesn't attend lectures or reads the text and slide, but I thought all his exams were very fair.
Took 115 with him and honestly thought he was a great teacher. a 3 hour class is tough no matter what and he made it enjoyable. Clearly has a passion for teaching and the subject matter. I would recommend him.
I had him for sex and gender and with 3 hour lectures once a week in the night time and found it very hard to sit through his class because i found it boring. Do not buy the textbook!!! When I took his exams I did not see any material from the textbook on there, it was all from his powerpoints and the articles he posted for us to read. Study hard!!
I cannot stand this man. He does not care for his students at all. His lectures are so boring, he makes excuses as to why he can't respond to emails in time etc. I had to retake his class with another prof and went from a D to an A because this prof actually taught the material. I would never take Mattson again, absolutely horrible!
He has good days but more bad. If you somehow are lucky to get a meeting with him he will give off this snobby attitude. You really have to work to get a decent grade in any of his classes. I'm sure he's a good person and all but I was not a fan of his teaching style at all. He needs to incorporate something other than constant videos.
In order to do well on the exam, YOU MUST go to class. Reading the text book is not sufficient enough because most of the material is straight from lecture. This was a tough class in my opinion. I received a "B", but that was with a lot of effort. He is an extremely tough grader, and takes forever to respond to emails.
I am an A student and I have no idea how i passed his class. This was brutal. I honestly wish I waited to see if there was another prof teaching this course. This completely botched my GPA. I would definitely never take him again.

He was always more than thrilled the several times I kept him late. Of course a prof expects you to come to class & do the readings. This isn't high school.

The exams are crazy tough. I felt like there was legit material on there I had never heard or seen before. Nice guy, but not my favorite prof to have.
Scott is tough. You really need to know your stuff. Yes, this isn't high school but my goodness some questions on his exams are virtually impossible. You can go into an exam feeling like you know everything, and literally come out of with a C or D. I have him this semester for adolescence (retake with him), and I am expecting the worst.
Cannot wait for this class to be over. I took a chance by perhaps taking summer courses. This may have been the worst decision of my life. I don't know if it's just the topic or him as a prof that is incredibly boring. No idea what my grade will be at the end of August.
Don't miss a class or else you're in trouble. He is basically the only prof to teach sex and gender, which is fine. However, I really did not enjoy the course to be honest. Exams like in his other classes are tough. He doesn't relate to any of the students concerns at all.

Really great prof! Super smart & funny. 10% of your grade an auto A+ if you show up & participate. Pay attn, take notes, do the readings, & you'll do fine on tests. If you have probs just go talk to him. super nice and helpful. After i saw him, did much better on the final. Tests are not imposs at all but you do have to try & learn. No coasting
Lectures felt like they would go on forever. The exams were almost impossible. Yes he does give credit for attendance, but in hindsight it does nothing for you. I would not recommend him in the future.
He also gave us 10% p/f on discussion posts and gave 3% bonus, so that was 23% of our grade that was in our control as an A+. I also got a personal email congratulating me on being the 21st highest score. No other prof has personally congratulated me before. More enthusiastic and interesting than most of the profs here, IMO

I have him right now. I did not do as well as I thought I would on the first exam to be honest. He seems like a nice individual, but his grades can be tough. He's alright, but I wouldn't take him again. Its just too late now to drop the course.
For an Intro to psych class, his tests are way harder than needed.
Prepare for the heavy and overloaded lectures. He does not post study guide for his exams. Be sure to talk to him in person if you needed help because he does not respond to students' email!
How do you not provide an exam study guide for a university based course? I expected a lot from him, and was truly disappointed with his teaching style. Try to take this class with someone else. He definitely does not respond to emails in any hurry.
Mature student-things have really changed. Dr. Mattson? So much easier than in my day. Very detailed course outline with outcomes, each lecture w/ clear learning objectives-a great study guide for exams-used those to make my ownbut Im an adult, dont expect others to do everything for me. Yes, he can be funny at times, but I did not find his class interesting at all. I'm generally an 80% and above student and received a C in this class. I'm sure he's a nice person, but I wouldn't take his class again.
I had two prfs for this class. Mattson took over. 1,000 times better. So much more energy, which made me go to class more. I learned a lot every time, but I take notes and stay off my phone.

I'm learning so much! A wealth of information is in his head. I've taken several classes with him. Very entertaining but it's amazing how he weaves everything together from all over the place to show the big picture. The more courses from him, the more the dots are connecting. I'm learning so much about psychology!
Mattson is one of the most enthusiastic prof.s I've had so far & knows so much about so many things. He's very accessible and always willing to stay behind and talk or during his office hours so far after every class with me and the others. I get the sense that he loves psych and is always willing to talk about it. He gets so excited about it!
I LOVE DR. MATTSON. His lectures are hilarious, he does go off topic a lot so note taking is hard and he gives a TON of reading but I love the class none the less. He also gives you a lot of participation marks. We had a take home midterm. He's pretty great.
I agree this guy is great! he helped me narrow my paper while he bounced around about some greek philosophers, behaviourists fighting with Freud, and the cog revolution starting with rats in trolly cars. He was so happy when I said I was kidding asking if it was cumulative (just cause his outline said this bugs him). Atleast he knew I read it lol

The exam format is ridiculous. The mix of multiple choice, short answer etc. is dumb in my opinion. We had the final last night and he was missing for nearly 45 minutes. I expect we will get these grades back in three weeks. I should have learned my lesson the first time I took his course.
I am currently taking this course now. I wish I had waited for another professor to teach this course. He is still unorganized as he was with intro psych. I would not recommend.
If you can try to take adolescence with another prof. I had to take this course during summer so I could have the pre req for fall and winter courses. He was awful again (had him for intro). Trust me when I say wait for another prof.
Awful. I took this course as it is a pre requisite for a course this fall. He was terrible. He comes off as very obnoxious. I know it was hot in the room but he also would sweat a considerable amount which was gross. The grading criteria for assignments was not clear. Grades were also late (which I head is his thing from other students)
If you have all the time in the world to read the notes on your own and the textbook then this is the class for you. I have never disliked attending a class as much as I dislike attending his class. He talks about absolute nonsense and makes you come to class just to get a password for an online assignment. Avoid taking a class with him if you can.
I have no idea why profs like him make attendance mandatory for a class this size. The entire password thing for extra credit might be the most useless waste of class time I have ever seen. Save your time and take this with someone else.

Awesome prof, really liked this course and teaching style. Chatty, goes off topic a bit but I didn't mind because I caught up with the material that way. Energetic and personable and always available to help if need be.

My criticism with him is what has already been discussed 1) the password extra credit is nonsense and 2) the amount of videos we watch are awful. He is a nice individual but his answer to most emails are directed towards graduate assistants who look to be tired from all the work they have to do.
Low key you can finesse the password assignments because the password is USUALLY based off of the key words in the lecture (and SOMETIMES he underlines or bolds the password in his lectures). The assignments, take home exam questions, and discussion posts really help you grab EASY marks!! However, the videos he shows in class are painfully boring!
I enjoyed his classes and found the topics to be interesting and he's very knowledgeable about a lot of areas. Also go to class because (a) that's the whole point of taking a class and learning, (b) tuition is expensive so make the most of your degree and (c) that's adulting. Grow up and stop whining and be grateful that you have this opportunity.
The participation for extra credit is ridiculous.
He's very passionate about the material and clearly intelligent. Definitely don't skip class! He packs a lot of material into his lectures. Super interesting stuff to learn about, and he conveys his enthusiasm to his students.

Dr. Mattson seems very passionate about the course, however, I found him to be very disorganized. We had a take home exam and two days before it was due, he realized that he hadn't taught an entire topic. He also shows a film every week/class, which I feel like is lazy teaching. He also has 3 take home exam questions and an actual M/C exam.

Lectures are boring, and he doesnt teach any new information. Most of the lecture time is used for outdated and terrible videos that he shows. Lazy prof who uses the same slides and videos from another course he taught. Makes you write 3 essays per exam. Makes you show up for a password. Dont waste your time taking his classes.
I pay thousands in tuition. Why am I being told it is mandatory to attend class to have a chance at extra credit? The videos are so bad, he takes a week to answer emails.
You need to go to class in order to receive the extra credit opportunities. The videos are so outdated and useless. He responds within a week to emails which is annoying. You can meet him during office hours if necessary. I would prefer not to take him again.

People complaining about and attacking a prof offering extra credit in over four different ways. That should be in the DSM under as Lack of Gratitude Disorder. Be sure to rip him apart for caring too much, too. I learned a lot from him. If he teaches nothing new, why was the class avg not 100%? Cause thats a bunch of Maybe come to class?
I learned you can kill time by using outdated videos for an entire semester. The department needs to look into this.
Rambles a lot in lectures.
We watch a 60 min movie every week - every week! There is nothing interesting about this class. The participation grades with the password are a complete joke. I've learned absolutely nothing the first month. Try and take this course with someone else.
He talks about the Placebo affect like it is the cure for cancer when really its just a sugar pill. I do not recommend taking this class with Dr Mattson.
Dr. Mattson is a great professor. He is passionate about his teaching. His classes are interesting. You must attend classes to get the password to access your homework. Attend the class, read the text, do your homework and you should be fine.

Doesn't answer emails and barely teaches. For our Tuesday Thursday classes, he taught on Tuesdays (which was mainly him veering way off topic from the curriculum) and Thursdays we watched movies, every single week. Very disappointed. If you want an easy A, this is the class for you. If you want to actually learn anything, don't take it.
Adolescence was hands down the worst course ever structured. An outdated movie every single week for participation points. How is this even allowed? I learned absolutely nothing in this class. What a waste of tuition money. Take this course with someone else.
He has been terrible since classes have gone online due to covid-19. Did not contact us until 7+ days after campus was shut down. Posted 3 weeks of lecture material in the last week of classes. NEVER replies to emails. Makes us watch outdated movies that do not supplement my learning whatsoever. Horrible all semester, not just during the pandemic.
This class was the biggest waste of money. There was no structure, no guidance, it became an absolute joke to be honest. The online learning has been a lost cause. He doesnt care, doesnt prepare, and basically has o motivation to do the job correctly. Take this course with someone else.
Bar none the most incompetent professor I had in my four years at Uwindsor. His lectures are dreadful and he makes you watch old and irrelevant movies in each class. Unreachable through email. Leaves to get Harvey's in the middle of class. Please don't take his class it's not worth it. Learn from my mistakes, I suffered so you don't have too.

since its online everything is rushed so it sucks because he expects so much work. Stupidly long videos ( at least 6 a week) to answer google forums worth barely anything. Doesnt answer questions you send him through email, long ass exams. Was multiple choice 3 sections and still took me 45 mins to do each section.

I'm thankful people recognize how bad he is, maybe explained 8 things from text/slides/lecs, lecs were all over the place and discussions were complete nonsense, he clearly did not know the material, was consistently late, final exam had info not in course, bad vid's, could write a book about him
Brutal. His lectures often went off-topic, consisted of a long-winded PowerPoint and videos that go over the definitions. His exams are all application-based, but he does not go into depth on applying the terms learned.
LONG lectures that often times went off-topic. He NEVER answers emails, and the few times he does they're one-worded and useless. He took 8 weeks to release paper marks worth 20% of our grade (he had TAs) and some people wrote the final exam not knowing how they did on them. He gave no exam review and left students hanging. Take a different prof.
EAs are ridiculously long and difficult and are only worth 0.5% each. Waste of time. The DPs are fine, they're also worth 0.5%. Lectures are all over the place, and the division of how much things are worth is just odd. 2nd paper worth 10% more than the final exam (30% vs. 20). Impossible to get a hold of and criteria for assignments is never clear
Lot of tedious (but easy) work (weekly DPs & participation assns) based on long videos. Claims to be 'so behind' in emails so he won't answer you if you send one. Midterm had specific questions from textbook, but wasn't terrible. Very slow at giving grades back - exam is in 3 days and idk what I have going in. Good students will still do well.

Professor Mattson is the type of professor that will hear you out under any circumstances. He is very easy going and understanding. He realizes the situations we are in and works in ways to make it easy on students. You get many opportunities to bump up your grade by writing little papers which you can easily score 100% on. 100000% recommend.
I was looking forward to taking Dr. Mattsons Health Psychology classes. However, throughout the time Ive been his student, I can never get a straight answer. Let me be more clear There are 2 GAs/TAs that work under him. I never know who is grading my things and no one is on the same page. What one person tells me, another one doesnt agree with.
Great prof! 3 assignments each week but they're all pretty easy and quick to complete. Exams are easy as long as you read the textbook, he's a test bank kind of prof. Exams also include a writing portion, nothing hard. Definitely would take again, easy way to get an A if you're looking for a psych credit! Hard to get in touch with though...
He hasn't reached out once throughout the entire 4 months of this semester and it's impossible to get ahold of him. He doesn't return classwork so you have no idea where you stand in the course until you get your final grade. Assignments are long, poorly explained, and pretty much pointless since he barely reads them.
Professor Mattson was amazing! He does take a while to respond to emails but he did explain to me that he has over 600 students, that's why he had 6 GA's. He was very accommodating with a few of the assignments that I had missed. He's a test bank kind of guy. If you're having trouble reaching him, I would reach out to a GA.

exams have nothing to do with what you learn. Final exam was worth 30%, 165 questions in 180 mins. the questions were not from lectures or textbook (besides like 30% of the test). Had him for asynch psych, was probably my least favourite class. Was nice in the beginning but it grew to be very boring and the lectures grew to be useless compared to the mandatory revel readings. DP and engagement assignments are easy marks, makes you watch 2 hour long video + 2 hr lecture + super long revel readings each week
He never replies to emails. He gives a lot of work, forces you to buy the Revel textbook to get 10% from Revel quizzes. His final was 165 multiple choices and only 180 mins long. Failed me by 49% and never responded. Had a technical issue and lost a full hour of exam time. Got 104/165 and asked for help but no response. Cant graduate on time now.
Sweet guy but long-winded to the point where nothing he says makes any sense. Previous reviews are right, makes you do a bunch of old barely relevant readings. Talks more about philosophy than psychology it's frustrating.
I liked Scott, does kind of ramble though. I ended with a 96 in health psychology --> it is a hard class (not a psych major). But if you study, you will do well. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Could give more time on the exams. Marks papers easy (depends on GA/TA)

Mattson seems like a very nice guy, but his lectures are horrid. Two lectures a week and the first one he barely makes it through a slide and just goes on rants about irrelevant things. Professor Mattson is a very nice guy, however, regarding his teaching methods, he often strays from the material. We never seem to finish slideshows, and not much is learned within the class - he posts slideshows so you could easily gain material from this alone.
Dr mattson is gay but kinda bad tho. But on the real his first exam was a huge awakening into the cruel world that is university. He never told us how hard it was going to be and that no matter what you study, it may never be enough. (He is gay btw)
This course is useless. Midterm is 100 MC, very specific application based questions. Passionate but insanely boring to listen to.
There are three assignments every week. Gotta do the quiz, then watch a documentary and answer questions, then answer more questions in one of his forums. I gave up on doing all of that. None of them prepare you for the exam. Also, his lectures had nothing to do with the course material. He just rambled on about anecdotal stuff and his childhood.
I made the mistake of choosing this class for an elective. Unless this is your major do not take this class. There is too much material to study. Due to my other courses, I found it impossible to review all the class lectures, all the necessary chapters from the textbook, and documentaries to prepare for the cumulative final exam. Way too much info

Gave 5ish minute breaks in 3 hour classes. 3 assignments a week, often including 1hr videos & reading 30 pages of a textbook. Misleading midterm where it felt like he was trying to trick you. Did give a slight grade boost, but that was the least he could do.

there is a crazy amount of content, but its because he wants you to have a rounded conceptual understanding. His curves don't stress he just wants you to really have a comprehensive understanding. You probably wont do as well as you want to on exams but short answers save you!
Very hard to sit through his lectures and I never got much out of them. It was hard to follow his thought process and decipher what was actual class material versus his own personal stories that weren't really necessary. His exams were tough and very long. He had a lot of other easy homework to help boost your mark, but it was quite time consuming.

He is disorganized and utilizes two textbooks, making the course heavily loaded. Labs are tedious and could be better used for learning. In general, we are actually learning from the textbook.

I like his personality, he is a really nice guy. I also love that he has more than just exams and papers to make up our final grades - discussion posts are an easy 20%. The only thing I have a complaint about is the exams, they are grammatically horrible and it makes it difficult to understand the questions properly.

Scott was a great person and had a great personality, but I personally did not take in much from the lectures. His exams were unpredictable with what was going to be on it so study ALL material. He does like to curve and give bonus marks so you should be fine. Do not stress as much as I stressed in this class because it will be fine. Trust me :)
Hes a funny and nice person but In terms of material for lectures he would veer off topic many many times and i felt i learnt nothing for 3 hours. Stopped attending lectures after 4 weeks. He assigned alot of readings and 40 minute videos. i would not reccommend taking his class
He teaches really well. A lot of people complain about his lecture materials are not good or irrelevant, but it is probably because they don't pay attention to him when he teaches. And he also shows great mercy for grading, the exams are reasonable except for one or two strange questions(he has 100 mutiple choices for midterm and 160 for final).
Exams are horrific. Lectures include him rambling about whatever is on his mind that day (topics may include global warming, cannibalism, his pet pigeon, and so much more!) semi funny but terrible prof. Anyone saying the info relates to course content is blatantly wrong. Avoid at all costs.
I had to attend all of the lectures to get passwords for weekly assignments but their content didn't correlate to what was on the exam. Frustrating. My grade was carried by self study, the curve, and weekly assignments, which were a free 20 percent, minus how time consuming they were. I relied very heavily on the textbook. Many failed the midterm.
I've only had him for a month and I am dumbfounded at how he has amassed any positive reviews. This guy goes on ridiculously long anecdotal tangents instead of teaching relevant class content, assigns way too many readings/videos, the DP's and EA's are ridiculously challenging for how little they are worth, and his final exam is cumulative. AVOID!

Dr. Mattson gets a lot of mixed reviews. Although he does go off-topic quite often during his lectures, you will notice over time that his rants are related to Psychology, Philosophy, and other similar topics. Personally, I found him quite funny. His marking is clear-cut and the EA assignments give you an easy 10% of your grade. Exams were fair.
Lectures can be a bit off-track, but the exams are reasonable if you stay engaged. Use unstuckstudy ai and the textbook to study - really helpful for prep.

I have no motivation to go to his class, and the odd time I decide to go, I end up leaving early due to him veering off topic or saying something inappropriate. No professional abilities at all. Sweat stains and misogyny on the first day was enough to drive me away from this man. Hours of the lecture are spent on single slides with misspelt words that he cannot pronounce while he rambles about his personal life. 3-6 Crash Course youtube videos to watch per week that teach the class better than him.
This professor gets mixed reviews. Humor alone doesn't make a good teacher. His extra assignments help, but another professor gave better deadlines and easier exams. Overall, he's okay, but enthusiasm isn't enough.

Dr. Mattson is... strange. He often goes off-topic about his personal life and makes uncomfortable jokes about sexual matters. Highly advise studying from the textbook due to the midterms being ripped directly from the "McGraw Hill" interactive feature. The paper was alright, but I got a low mark due to the TA not being able to find my sources.
he goes on side tangents for so long. when he's on these side tangents he takes forever to get to his point. four lecs in a ROW, he managed to yap away so much that we didn't get to the THIRD SLIDE of the 40 SLIDE presentation until we had 20 min left of class. stopped showing up to the lecs after. final exam was biology focused instead of psych.
I took bio, calc, physics, chem, and somehow psych was the hardest class? Lectures were impossible to understand, he went on random rants about whatever was on his mind that day. His lectures are useless for exam prep, because every question is pulled 1:1 from the textbook. For a cumulative final I sure wonder why 90% of it was from 2/8 chapters.
The exam was brutal, especially since the professor didn't teach properly. I had to teach myself everything, and the textbook was so long. The professor spent more time talking about his personal life than the material, and his jokes never made sense. If you're not a psychology major, don't take this class. AND I AM!
Mattson was a tough prof. He's a nice guy and can be funny sometimes, but overall not a quality prof. exams are very difficult. I highly recommend knowing terms and definitions well since his exam questions are just scenarios that you have to put a name to. You're also in for a lot of cat and pigeon talk. He definitely got his degree in yapology.

Scott is a very sweet guy, but his exams genuinely come out of know where. If you take his class I do recommend, doing ALL the weekly assessments and focus more on the textbook rather the power points! Midterm was not that bad but the final exam is what made my mark drop drastically. (152 Q)
Like someone else said, focus more on the textbook than anything. EVERYTHING is fair-game and cumulative. There is also no review. I would only recommend him for a 3-hour slot and not the 1 hour and 20 mins. If you do choose the 1 hour and 20 min slot, your midterm will most likely be in two parts which I know bothered many students.
i was literally wasting my time going to the lectures. he was a chill guy, but the lectures can just be taught at home and not worth going. the entire class struggled on the exams. i dont think id ever take this class ever ever again. i studied 4x harder on the second exam and only got 2% more than the first, so take that as you will.

Spends 2 1/2 hours saying useless info and then the last 30 min actually going through the slides. Assigned a major assignment by posting it and not explaining it in class. When I first came to the university I rated him as hard and boring. 3 years later taking another course with him, I realize that he is not the hardest, he challenges us but also speaks to our minds. He helps us do the unlearning unconsciously.The reason some students might say he is hard is because he is very academic, educated, and intellectual.

On top of it, the whole textbook is fairgame and exams are cumulative. it's also an elective course, not mandatory. the fact that theres more readings and effort being put into this class than actual mandatory courses is insane.

He's a bit out there in lectures. Sometimes he will go on off topic tangents. Attending class quickly became a waste of time because everything in the lesson could be learned from the textbook. The passwords for his assignments are often common facts or references from a video played in class (also available online). Overall pretty light course
The 3 hour class felt like 8 hours. The conversation would rarely stay on topic and felt like such a waste of time. You will check out so fast. I don't reccomend this professor unless its required. Tests were also very long.
If you cannot focus during a lecture do not take this class. If you can, I assure you it will be your favourite class. Prof. is extremely passionate and clearly an expert. His lectures feel like the funniest and most educational rant you've ever heard. Many small assignments make a portion of your grade totally in control. 10/10

He is very political, hard to reach outside of the classroom, and doesn't ever stay on topic so you are practically teaching yourself. There is no point in going to the class, you will teach more to yourself.

Honestly i should have listened to all the reviews i am actually changing my minior because of how horrbile this class was, the last exam was absolutely brutal he took the most irrelvant topics from each chapter and put it in the exam. This class brought my gpa down and was overall awful
I found this course poorly structured and frustrating. Lectures lacked clarity, slides were confusing, and I had to teach myself most of the material. Nearly 40% of my grade is still missing before the 20% weighted final I write tomorrow night. With no feedback and weak organization, success feels out of reach. I would not take this class again.
He acted like a child during the exam, causing disruption and causing us to struggle to focus, even when asked to quiet down by a student so we could maximize the time we had to complete. He stormed out, slamming the door and his things, and said we were disrespectful and he would talk when he wanted in his exam. He eventually left mid-exam.
Class is reasonable if you study. There are two exams (both 40%) and 20% is completion marks for weekly engagement and discussion posts. MC question part of exams was tough, but SA portion was much more doable. Lectures are somewhat engaging, but the prof is extremely unprofessional (ex. FINAL EXAM) and that is NOT acceptable for the money we pay.

saw that prof a total of 3 times: on the first day when i realized his lectures were a waste of time, the midterm, and the final. do the extra assignments and participant pool for 3% boost (dont procrastinate like i did, you'll need it after the final). his exams are insane, but you should do alright if you study the textbook
he is honestly very chill and fun and does his best to keep his lectures engaging, exams are not tough if you pay attention during lectures
