Hard class but easy grading policy. Nice guy but seems too busy to approach.
His grading policy was pretty hard, but thats because his quizzes are extremely hard. he often gets off topic during his lectures and then has the nerve to base his essays and quizzes on his lectures!

Merlino is maddening - it's like trying to learn logic (which isn't easy or intuitively understood) from a 7th grader on meth. He's talks way fast, paces, constructs examples that make no sense...but-easy grading policy and an ass worth staring at for 75 minutes, and that's gotta be worth something!
Um, I thought I needed this class. I didn't. It was extremely vague and confusing and his essay assignments are completely absurd. His grading scale is even crazier. A 2 out of 10 is a C? BWAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHHAHAAHHAA What?????? Anyway, take this course if you like utter confusion!
very engaging, likes to teach and play devil's advocate when discussing philosophy - i definitely recommend him!
Merlino would be a really good teacher if he understood any of the material he was teaching.
Merlino is a good teacher overall. Yes, he talks real fast and does go off topic, but the class is really interesting for the most part. His quizes are really really hard, and the assignments can be difficult too. He likes to pretend that he never offers extra credit, but trust me...he does.
The worst class I ever took. I think you'd have to be a phil. major to even stay awake.
This guy is thoughtful and clever. He really pushes your buttons and makes you leave the class feeling a bit of an activist. You can't leave being stupid either, unless you try. This class got me interested in my current career goal of cognitive sciences, so expect deep thinking.
Professor Merlino could be more prepared for class lecture, but his grading policies rock!
I hated him! When i first met him i thought he was hot, then he opened his mouth. Can't keep track of what he is saying, or trying to say. Grades confusing and harsh, assignments are confusing and really hard! He's really opinionated and lets that show, he often shot people down in class too.
Umm on of the most straighforward teachers I've ever had...hated the class but liked his grading scale....easier to get a better grade.
He has the most awesome grading scale in the world! Like somebody else said: 5/10 is a B! I can't comment on his lectures or his clairty because I had an online version of the class, so I never had to meet w/ him. The quizes were online so they wen't that bad. There was only one or two assignments and that was it.
Instructor gets people to talk by asking hard questions, and encourages disagreements. Challenging class, hard quizzes, but fun sometime. Grades are fair but hard to get a A I think.
The guy is competent, enthusiastic, straight-up and pushes people to discuss topics in class. Not easy but not that hard, just follow instructions and you can pass. i recommend him.
I thought he was pretty rude sometimes, but he wasnt really that bad, I just didnt like the class. I think the class would have been more interesting if more people had talked and participated, he really tried to get people involved but didnt have much success. class was based off 5 online quizzes which you could take twice, got a B w/o trying
He is very hyper, jumps around the topic so much that it is extremely difficult to stay focused. Topic itself already very challenging and he made it even more confusing. Grading scale is weird, but not bad. Quizzes are extremely difficult. Beware of this class/teacher!!
Goes through some hard material and gives good examples. Makes the guidelines on expectations clear so the people that can't figure it out should go back to junior college. Also- he's got the best body in the phil dept, kind of looks CIA or army...
This class was fun and interesting at the beginning of the semester but eventually became boring. The amount of notes greatly drops after the first few weeks, and he puts most notes and all handouts/extra info on his sac CT page. The only assignments in the class are 5 online quizzes that are spread out over the semester. Need book, don't need to g
try to avoid this teacher if you can. nice guy & really funny sometimes but very difficult. class itself is hard & he makes it more complicated. quizzes have nothing to do with what you "learn" in class (lectures don't make any sense) & are hard, same with 2 papers. book & new scientist is unnecessary. I had no idea what was going on and got a B-
He's not extremely bad, but his quizzes get very wordy and confusing. online quizzes are good because he gives you 2 tries for each one. Overall, very easy to pass if a little effort is given
Lectures are all over the place, but informative and helpful for quiz. Sometimes I thought that there was a voice in his head that he was responding to. Didn't read much of the book. Just make sure to take the OPEN BOOK quizzes. Quizzes cover the material, but are on WebCT for "review" for the next one.
I got a B in this class, and I totally forgot to do the midterm, so if you're into Philosophy and can remember lectures enough to answer quiz questions, you can easily get an A in his class. People think he's scary or imposing, but I don't understand why. He plays devil's advocate a bit, which is nice, and he knows his stuff!
It helps to have some interest to stay afloat in this class. Passionate, sometimes a little confusing (but how can logic be taught simply?), but very informative and involved. Teaches effectively and does not seem personally content with simply lecturing and throwing you on your own.
This teach seemed super hard at first. The quizzes were ridiculous. But toward the end it becomes easier and an A is actually very possible. So I don't regret taking this class. I suggest to work with a friend it will increase your chances for a good grade!
Prof. Merlino had nothing worth listening to. I guess it's easy to teach philosophy when you can speak BS and always answer a question with a question. He constantly contradicts his own logic, and when called on it, he claims "we have to move on". Basically, he just doesn't understand true philosophy.
lectures are unprepared and very disjointed. he is always contradicting himself or changing rules to get the 'upperhand.' in arguments. promotes stupid responses and uses them to go off on long, unrelated tangents. if you really want to get something from this class, take another teacher.
Dr. Merlino is a great teacher. He really wants you to learn the subject and apply it in everyday situations.
Very fair class. Treats all students equally. Easy to get an A: read his handouts, take notes in class, follow his directions, and study. He is very clear on what he wants and what you should be getting out of the class. Seems extremely hard at first and while the subject matter is complicated, it's taught well and he is very fair. Recommended.
Class turned out to be more interesting than I thought. I liked the debate back and forth. Melrino usually takes the opposite side of an argument and makes you disagree. I think this bugs some people but it made me think. Tests were easy, just read the book.
Of course many of u might agree that philosophy is boring.. That is why i rarely attended his class. My reason for that is that his grading rubric is the best in the entire university! All you have to do is read the book, take your quizzes on time. About 13 quizzes per semester and 1 final. Only 13 questions, also online. Recommended for phil4!
Extremely knowledgeable, charming, charismatic, and entertaining; EXCELLENT professor. The subject is difficult but his grading scale is ridiculously fair: you can get a C with 40% of the total points. It's incomprehensible how anyone couldn't do well, even with minimal effort. Also, surprised not to see a "hot" pepper because he certainty is!
At first he seems like a hard teacher but he isn't. His grading scale is extremely fair. Makes it pretty hard to fail the class. 3 un- announced quizzes and 3 online. Helps to take all of them. I missed 1 test and still got a B-. There is a lot of discussion and debate in the class, which is entertaining and helps you understand the material.
He is awesome! I failed a test (like literally F--) and I got an A in the course. His grading scale rocks and I agree he is pretty hot ;D
Easy, you cant fail
Nice guy, but class material (almost all online) was a bit disorganized. Course work was a few in-class and online quizzes. His grading method is a bit much, makes it pretty much impossible to fail.
He was very unorganized and didn't lecture at all. All the learning is self-taught from the book.
Merlino is a terrible professor. However, he has no homework and your grade is entirely made up of 13 ONLINE quizzes. Quizzes are fairly easy with the textbook. I went to class twice the entire semester and received a 12/13 on the final and a B in the class. NOT an easy A, but definitely very easy to pass. He's got one of the best grading scales.
He is one of the worst teachers at CSUS. Does not teach you anything, you are expected to teach yourself from the book. If you ask a question, he will explode and tell you to figure it out b/c he 'can't help'. The only thing that saved my ass was his grading scale. He grades on a crazy curve. I probably only passed 3 quizes, but still got a B. +
Unorganized, unclear, and VERY unhelpful. He expects you to teach yourself from the book, and when you ask him questions about the materiel he is no help at all. He is a non negotiable professor.
The WORST teacher at CSUS! His lectures make no sense. He Won't allow media versions of the book. and when I went to him for help to understand the material, he told me I put myself in the "situation". Hard to fail the class but save your money, if Philosophy really interests you like I was interested before meeting him, TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!
Terrible professor. Subjective grading and convoluted material and terrible presentation made this class a nightmare, and 4 pop quizzes are the majority of your grade. Goes off on tangents and talks in circles. Books "required" but never needed.
Teacher was not helpful during lectures at all. Did not answer questions clearly. Class was so boring and bland that it was hard not to fall asleep. Only thing that went into your grade were 13 quizzes that were online. One of the worst professors I've ever had.
I think the best way I can put this would be to quote my friend, "He's a teacher that doesn't really understand how to teach or communicate."
I really liked his class. He can get a bit sidetracked on lectures, bit that's every philosophy professor.. be sure to take detailed notes and do all the readings. 4 pop quizzes, but he gives you the possible questions at the beginning of the semester! I learned a lot about science and how to think critically about scientific evidence.
If you like a class that follows a syllabus exactly and has set timelines for assignments, this is not for you. If you want an interesting lecturer with thought provoking class material this is for you. Not an easy grader but the curve helps alot. Texts used briefly.
A very difficult class and the lectures are not clear.
Half hybrid class. Must attend class for in class quizzes and also take quizzes online. Those are basically your grades. 100/200 = a C! Best grading rubric ever. Confusing prof though.
Professor Merlino is one of those very rare professors that actually care. He tries his hardest to be unbiased and provides only the most relevant examples for class discussions. Extremely knowledgeable! I don't understand the negative reviews at all.
His class is supper easy! Tons of extra credit, it is really hard not to get an A. I took it as a GE, but if phil is you major he is a very passionate professor who tries his best to clarify the topic and his lectures are pretty entertaining..
I took Merlino for epistemology. Great experience, overall. He can act a little scatter-brained from time-to-time, but he is always organized and ready to go. Very interesting guy who knows his stuff. You don't have to attend every class to get an A, but you should just for the discussions alone. Easy A if you read the book and participate.
Terrible, you wont understand what he says. You can pass his weekly quizzes by teaching yourself and reading the book. You dont have to go to class. Just get 7's or more and you will be fine.
This was a hybrid class. There's 10 online quizzes & an in class quiz every week & he takes questions from the textbook on the quiz. He's SO confusing. BUT his grading system is really good! The class is 200 points and he just adds however many points you get on quizzes. I understood absolutely nothing in this class & with zero effort I got an A.
Please read the assignments and reading at home.... They will be on the test! Not what he lectures in class! OR YOU WILL FAIl! his class lectures are nothing to the test. What's on his lecture is only to help you with your term paper! YOUR TERM PAPER. If you are confuse do more readings, and talk to him, he is a cool dude, and love to speak
Professor Merlino is awesome. I struggled a bit in the beginning of the semester, but after I started going to his office hours and doing the readings before class my grade shot up. I went from a C to an A in the class easily. Pretty much if you put in work then you'll get a good grade.
Took this as a hybrid coarse so attendence was pretty much mandatory. Weekly quizzes in class that were easy and could be discussed with other students and also weekly quizzes online that were fairly easy. Most of the time i was pretty confused, but his grading system makes it so you dont have to understand whats going on to pass the class.
This class was weird. He makes no sense and his lectures are strange and confusing. All 4 essay quizzes and the midterm and final were NOT based on lectures from class. He posts these study questions on videos and supplement reading--all tests are based on that. I showed up to class only for essay quizzes and got the easiest A of the whole semester
Took this as a hybrid course. Easy in-class quizzes. All of our tests were taken online. It was difficult at times to understand his lectures; he tends to jump from topic to topic. He gives grades according to a clear point system. And he's helpful in the sense that he makes chapter summaries available. Extra credit opportunities available.
Easiest professor! Attendance is mandatory since theres a quiz every class meeting, took a hybrid class so I would only attend on mondays! Quizzes are super easy, his lectures were somewhat confusing but the questions were pretty straight forward. Online test every week due on fridays! You get 5 tries for every test and even for the final.
The tests are online and you can take them more than once. Can be sorta confusing in terms of explaining, but he uses examples to explain most things. Participation is mandatory in the sense that we take an in-class clicker quiz every week. Pretty chill for a professor.
Easy A, only 230 points for an A. In class clicker test every week and one online test every week 10 questions and you get 5 tries! There are a lot of points offered so theres no way to fail.
Hybrid class. Has a set grading scale. Need to get 230 point to get an A. I got that even without the final which was 50 points. 10 point online quizzes ever week. Get 5 tries per quiz. In class clicker quizzes ever class period. Get to consult people around you for quiz. Overall easy class. Need to know the topics for online quiz.
Super easy class. Just read the book and his blog online and study, you'll be fine. Grading is a point based system so i only needed 230 points for an A. I easily passed with a 245 with little to no effort. I just had to read and go to class. Tests online include 5 attempts so use them to your advantage. I RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR!
I took his online class. At first it is very intimidating because there is a ton of assigned reading and videos. But not to worry once you get a hang of his style you will do well. The online blogs are fairly straight forward and worth roughly half your grade. The online tests are the tough part, but you can retake it 5 times. No joke.
He has in class clicker tests so you must attend class to get points, once you reach 250 you have an A in the class. Easy A if you actually put in effort and attend class. Overall he is a good professor he just over explains everything. Was a hybrid class so we only met once a week and we had weekly readings. Would recommend.
There are in-class clicker tests, weekly online tests, and one online final. He overly explains concepts and doesn't expect much from you. He would go over what he assigned extensively in class. He grades by a threshold point system. You have to reach a certain number of points for a grade. Easy A if you put the effort and show up to class.
Tests online were very difficult.
Prof. Merlino was cool. He talks a little too fast, but it's because there's so much information to know. But honestly, just show up for class. There are clicker tests at each meeting but they aren't that bad if you do the readings. His final saved my grade! Its an overall easy class, and he admits he gives more points than necessary. EASYYYYY
Ugh! This class was the only one open for upper division GE's and I regret it. A more appropriate name for the class is "Pretentious Arguments Against Religion." The reading and videos are miserably boring and useless in real life. He claims he wants to see you understand the concept but then asks detailed questions on what specific people say.
Super easy! It was a hybrid class so we met once a week to do an online clicker test and the rest of the assignments are online. His powerpoints and handouts are super helpful you don't even need the book! Would recommend! The grading scale is great too!
I took his critical thinking class and it was alright. Sometimes he would ramble and then say "forget what I said thats for another day." His class relied heavily on clicker tests so its mandatory to be in class because there are NO RETAKES. We used a textbook(he preferred eBooks) and used it all the time. Overall, he's a funny guy but he rambles.
i mean the class was fair, but he makes you work for your grade. His lectures are heavy and he takes really fast sometimes going off on a tangent. Over all the class was pretty straight forward, just show up the class after reviewing the previous lecture and skimming the reading.
I took this class to overlap a GE course and upper-division requirement. Attendance is not mandatory but it helps you with the quizzes. He posts everything online and doesn't like people to take notes in class because he rather has them participate and listen. His grading criteria is simple.
Do not miss class because there will be a quiz every class lecture. Sometimes goes off on a tangent. Very easy to talk to and funny. You have homework but it is not graded. Must buy online clickers to take in class quizzes. The in class quizzes take up the whole lecture period.
This is my first semester at CSUS as a transfer. I took this as an upper division GE. All classes were fine, but this one. It was the hardest class bc his examples were all over the place, and lectures very scatter brained. Essays were based on online work not IN. Tests were so tricky with very similar questions as the next.
Easy class, 7 quizzes and 7 discussion boards including a response and reply of a classmate as well. NO TESTS. Keep up with the modules and do your readings for an A.
Pretty easy class if you do all the work and readings on time. Very clear grading criteria and not a tough grader at all!
Enjoyed his class. He often rambles off a bit but overall, his lectures and examples are good. I found his class to be fun and interesting. His class was an online class, and meet once a week for lectures. He also does in class clicker tests, but those are easy if you do the work. His class does need a textbook, but he advises to just get the PDF.
Book not necessary. Posts all study info to pass on SacCT (slides, vocab, etc). Graded by weekly online HW (10 multiple choice questions) and 1 final (10 MC ?s like HW). 5 retries for all HW and final. No reason not to get an A. Counts high B+ (like 87%) as an A in final grade. Very friendly in class + will explain to the few who don't understand
TAKE THIS CLASS. Seriously. It's so easy. And it counts as a graduation requirement. Definitely the easiest class I've ever taken at Sac State. 10/10
I took PHIL131 online with Merlino, easiest class I've ever taken. 7 quizzes, and 7 discussions and that's it. Quizlet. Just put some thought into the discussions. Super easy A, I recommend highly!
He has a quiz every class at different times, so don't skip. I never used the textbook. Be sure to do every assignment because every point counts. His lectures jump around a lot and he seems like he's frazzled 24/7 but he's a nice guy. No makeups for anything. You can google all answers to online tests. He likes when people participate.
7 discussion questions, 7 quizzes for the whole semester that you can take up to 5 times. He is super cool has a blog page that goes through most of the discussion questions. quizlet is your friend !!! don't buy the textbook. debates are super long and dry but you don't have to watch them all. gives you at least 2 weeks for each discussion/quiz
Love this class! I think he takes it easy on students so we'll be openminded and more likely to learn and grow instead of stressing out about grades. He does provide a lot of optional reading (you can choose how hard you want to work in his class). The bad reviews are probably from students offended by the material, which is not Merlino's fault.
Very easy online course. Merlino responded quickly with questions. I don't usually like online classes, but this was a pretty good experience. His video slideshows are very easy to watch and follow along with. He includes much more detail than you need to learn for the tests.
The subject matter is difficult, but the class is easy. 7 quizzes and 7 discussions. You get five attempts at every quiz. Take every attempt because lots of the questions make an appearance on the next unit's quiz - they are all cumulative. The only effort really required is to actually do the reading and watch the videos. But it's very doable.
This class is a fairly easy A especially for an online course. The content is somewhat hard to grasp but the overall workload was lax. 7 quiz + 7 discussion posts. Grading is very strict so make sure you set reminders to do assignments ON TIME. Overall I personally put minimal effort into the class roughly 0-3 hours/week and received an A
The class is improperly named Phil of Religion, should be called Phil of Atheism, it's just an atheistic brainwashing attempt. Nothing valuable in this class. Discussion questions heavily biased. The class is ridiculously easy, should not be an university level class, but a second grade!
You have the decision to show up or not but be prepared for the in-class quiz. There is a quiz that you can take within 2 weeks and you have 5 tries. Quiz is 20 questions. The final is the same thing but each question is worth 3 points. Prof was nice & caring. I enjoyed coming to his class. He also gets off topic but thats what makes his class fun
Online course w/ heavy content. He allows 2 weeks to review a LOT of info for 7 discussions and 6 quizzes (can take up to 3 times for the best score). Very helpful in his responses. Stay on top of timelines and reading. Quizlet helped somewhat with quizzes but you need to be familiar with the reading. Not an easy A, but doable.
Took Phil of Sci. Learned a lot, but online multi choice ques. are deliberately tricky. It's supposed to test comprehension, but the framing of the answers led to overthink & self-doubt. He gives 3 tries, but it's hardly helpful when confusing. A lot of interesting content to sift through, but can be daunting for tests. Don't use a slow comp.
Before going into this class, there's so much you won't like, especially the readings. They are hard to understand since most of them are old, literary works of philosophers and scholars. I didn't learn anything. Wrote lots of baloney in discussion posts. Quizzes were hard. The final is cumulative. Prepare to use your brain to the extreme!!
Easy online class. The subject is kind of weird. I feel like it's more of a class to prove how religion is unnecessary or whatsoever. But I only took this class to get credit, so I careless. The quizzes are straightforward, it seems hard but it's repetitive questions, so pay attention or search it on Quizlet for answers.
You have 7 quizzes that are based on the readings, but you get 5 attempts on, in class quiz every week, which halfway through the semester he lets you work in groups, and final at the end of the semester. The in class quizzes are based on what he lectures on and the reading vocab. Grades are based on how many points you get total not percentage.
Easy-ish online class. Your grade consists of ONLY weekly discussion boards and quizzes. No papers or exams!!! You can tell Professor Merlino knows how to run an online course. He even has a separate blog for further interaction with his students. Discussion questions take some thinking, but overall straightforward if you read the material.
Easiest online class to take especially during COVID. He responds to emails quickly. Easiest UD GE. Dont bother buying the book because you dont need it. Questions from the exam is also from videos he has on his modules.
Good upper division class that really gets you thinking about religion. Only 7 discussions and 6 quizzes. He gives you a lot of material to prepare for the quizzes and gives you 3 attempts
He's on an ok guy, it's just the material is soooo boring, if you don't like philosophy don't bother. He is lenient in grading which is nice and he tries his best to keep the class alive. if you're making this an elective, just don't you will just waste brain cells. If you like philosophy go for it,
Prof. Merlino was not my favorite. His class is somewhat unorganized which made it confusing. Each class there is always a quiz on the chapters you should have read before class and he goes over some examples and doesn't really lecture. All tests are on canvas; chapter tests, midterm and final. Your grade is based off of all points earned
I don't know what he's like in person, but being a professor in the middle of a pandemic, he could've been a tiny bit more approachable and given some extra credit and not just expected us to work our lives around his class.
Class is super easy. Easy A. I do recommend watching the lectures.
3 essays, two MC exams, discussions every week. discussions weren't towards our grade though so that's annoying (if you miss more than 3 discussions, he deducts it from your grade). read the textbook because that's what your last essay will be on. this class was annoying bc he's so unorganized. lots of reading; this was more like self-study btw
