He's a very good teacher. The reading is not absolutely necessary because the test is straight from the outline, although the reading is very interesting. He answers all questions and has a strong background in the law.
Great professor. I take his UNO class. He's super involved and cares about his students.
Professor Nolan is one of the most professional instructors I have ever had. He not only brings a unique style of teaching, but also is also incredibly organized and straightforward with his expectations. If you are thinking about law school, then I highly recommend taking one of his courses.
Professor Nolan is a great professor to have both inside and outside of the classroom. He really wants to see his students succeed: he is great about giving advice about law school, asking about how he's doing, etc. Definitely take him if you're interested in law school. Lectures can be repetitive and exams can be overly specific, but an A is doable
Professor Nolan was my first introduction to PoliSci at Tulane... and it was a GREAT one! He was helpful & overall incredibly clear. He offered up to 5 points of extra credit in the class -- which I didnt need to get an A but did anyways. His tests were fair as long as you read the material. An overall hilarious guy. Long live Dumbeldore & Gandalf!
He is the reason I decided to go to law school. He answers questions in a timely matter and doesn't care about how many you ask. He has a solid law background and can answer questions that go beyond textbook material. He tells you exactly what will be on the test in his notes and lecture. He may talk about himself too much though.
Professor Nolan is easily one of the best professors I've ever had at Tulane. He's extremely intelligent, willing to help all of his students, welcomes different opinions, and is very funny during class. I never didn't want to go to class, it was and still is always a pleasure to attend.
He's a really great professor who has a really interesting background in law. Genuinely cares about his students. Super intelligent.
Super kind professor. The class was the absolute easiest thing ever considering all tests were online and open note. Couldn't be simpler but was also enjoyable.
I took Prof. Nolan Criminal Justice. He really went out of his way to help me with planning for law school and an internship. He has a lot of legal experience and used a lot of examples from the real world. He really went out of his way to explain both side of every political issue and is more moderate than most of my professors at Tulane.
I started law school last week. I am already ahead by a lot b/c Prof Nolan taught Con Law like a preview law school. I did not truly appreciated how much I learned in his Con Law until this week. It's a lot of reading and he will make you talk in class but it's worth it. Doing extra credit case briefs moved me from B+ to A-. Thank you Prof Nolan!
After a family crisis + I came back to school a wreck he set aside time to tutor me on what I missed + gave an extension on a paper + told me that "a personal tragedy won't set you back in my class and I will get you back on track" 100% nicest thing anyones ever done for me here. A+ for kindness. Smart + funny, too. Will take again!
Mr Nolan gave us a lecture in class about how to get into law school that taught me more in a that one lecture than some professors taught me in a whle semester. He teaches con law and criminal system and I plan on taking both. He does talk very fast so if you dont read before class you can be lost in his lectures but will repeat if you ask him.
Super nice dude, kinda easy class. 3 homework short essays, 3 tests, 1 long research paper. The law and courts are definitely his thing like if u want to go to law school he will def help. I agree with person below that he talks fast but its ok bc he posts his notes and slides on Bb. You can tell he cares about his students.
By far the best professor I've ever had at Tulane. Hilarious, articulate, helpful, caring and so so much more--could rant on forever about him. If you have the opportunity to take a class with him, DO IT! I promise you won't regret it. Hands down the best professor I've ever had.
Professor Nolan is definitely one of the best professors I have had at Tulane and made me wish I was a Poli Sci major instead of minor so I could take more of his classes. He cares so much & will go out of his way to help w law school and gives v specific paper feedback, etc. alsoinvolves great, well-thought out stories to keep lectures interesting
Professor Nolan is one of the most genuine caring professors I have ever had at Tulane. He is so understanding and really wants all of his students to succeed. And on top of that, he is such a fun person and gives amazing lectures. Also always really wonderful to have LGBT profs as an LGBT student. Thank you Professor Nolan!
Professor Nolan is one of the best professors I have had at this school. He genuinely loves what he teaches and can instill that drive into his students with ease. He goes out of his way to help you if you don't understand the material, and has taught valuable lessons about how to prepare for a future in law.
Professor Nolan is great! His class is interesting and an A is very achievable. He is fair and super helpful, especially if you're looking for guidance with regards to law school admissions. 10/10 would take again and again and again.
Professor Nolan is one of my all time favorite teachers. He is so smart and interesting and cares so much about the topic and his students. He made me interested in the material.
I took Prof Nolan's AmGov, Courts, and now Con Law class. I know I would not have gotten into law school without his pre-law advice. Great lectures but he does move very quickly and calls on people a lot to answer questions about cases. His exams are long but they are actually fun because he asks you to think like a lawyer and judge.
Cannot recommend this class or professor highly enough. He's reasonable but not a pushover and you will truly learn a ton of information from his class. Great guy, cares a ton about his students and wants to give them every chance to succeed while still pushing them. Get ready to take exams at home and submit case briefs weekly. Do the reading!
Professor Nolan is the best professor I have ever had. I never wanted to miss class because all of his lectures were so interesting and engaging. He tells you exactly what is going to be on the tests and all of the tests are take-home/online therefore you can use your notes and the textbook and whatever else you need. All in all wonderful professor
Great professor! Writes great reccomendations for law schools. Not too hard but you learn a lot.
Professor Nolan exemplifies what all Professors should be. The material is challenging however, he is passionate about not only the subject matter, but also ensuring that students grasp the material to the best of their abilities. Therefore, once students do their part of the work ProfNolan assists students in achieving to the best of their ability
Had Nolan for Criminal Justice and I will always try to take his classes in the future. Such an amazing person and a really caring professor. We had 2 papers (one 5 page and one 10 page) and 3 exams (all online and open note). One of the only classes where I really felt like I learned valuable info without extremely stressing over doing well.
I am a recent graduate who had many great professors at Tulane. Professor Nolan is EASILY one of the best professors on campus. Accordingly, I took two of his classes. Professor Nolan's level of passion is top notch, and he is extremely knowledgeable. He wrote me an excellent law school recommendation, and helped me throughout the entire process!
Nolan is an outstanding, inspirational, charismatic, knowledgable professor, and caring mentor. I took his "Courts and Politics" course, and it is the primary reason I plan on attending law school. Students enrolled in his courses are in for an amazing experience with one of the top legal minds at Tulane University.
I've taken Courts and Politics, ConLaw, and Criminal Justice with Prof. Nolan. He gives great lectures that he works hard to make fun it and interesting. He does take-home tests that let you be creative in your answers; I thought the tests were fun. He'll prep you for law school well too, and writes beautiful letters of recommendation. Favorite.
Nolan is by far the most personable, kind, funny, and genuine professor I've ever had. His classes are a riot and he's great at making complex legal subjects totally understandable. He has different styles for his different classes, but I recommend all of them if you have the chance. He will make time for his students outside of class.
Fantastic Teacher! Funny, intelligent, engaging and a very reasonable grader. Attendance is mandatory but if you have any interest in courts and politics going to class should hardly be a burden.
I got into 4 of the 6 law schools I applied to with financial aid at every school. I would never have been able to pull it off without Prof. Nolan's help. I liked his Constitutional Law course the best but his Courts and Criminal Justice courses are great too. Funny and caring. If you want to get on his good side talk about Thomas Jefferson.
Does his best to make his lectures enjoyable, tests are online and open book, easy A.
Scott Nolan is probably my favorite professor of all time at Tulane. His class was incredibly engaging, even when he would lecture during classes. In addition, he has so much experience with law/law school. He offered incredible pre-law adviser, actually better than any of the Tulane Pre-Law Advisors could offer. TAKE HIS CLASSES.
Probably the best professor I've ever had at Tulane. If you have the chance to take the class, 100% worth it. All tests are online, grading criteria is extremely clear, and Professor Nolan makes all the class information very interesting and easy to learn. He is also very available outside of class if you have any questions. GREAT professor!
I enjoyed criminal justice a lot but you do not need the textbook to do well in this class I was able to pass all the exams just downloading his slides and going to class plus taking notes. The exams are very long and timed but taken online and you can use your notes and slides.
I just got into Georgetown law school because of professor Nolan helping me with my apps. His criminal law class was my favorite and I really liked his LGBT and courts and law class. His exams are very very long but he posts slides online and gives you a lot of time to write your answers. You can tell he really cares about his students.
Favorite professor here who helped me get into Emory law school. :-) You don't need the book for courts just use his posted slides and go to class but if he assigns a journal article you have to read it. He did 3 long tests, 3 short papers, 1 long paper that makes you write like a lawyer in four hypothetical cases.
Scott is the best! He is super enthusiastic about the class material which makes the content really interesting. There are 4 tests and weekly assignments but overall not that hard. Just go to class and listen and you will do fine. Highly recommend Prof Nolan!
This course is not really about politics it's more about math and doing research. I wasn't expecting all the math we had to do. There are quizzes and homework and a very long final paper. Lots of work but you can tell he works very hard to make sure everyone learns the material. Overall boring course material but great professor.
Professor Nolan is my favorite professor at Tulane. His lectures are super interesting because he often ties in his personal and professional experiences to material from class that never fail to entertain. Additionally, he is super accessible outside class and really wants students to succeed. Must take his class, especially if interested in law
Amazing amazing amazing wouldnt have taken anyone else for scopes. Class was hard but he really makes it the best it can be just a lot of work on weekend and paper isnt bad bc he guides you all the way. Gives opportunities to get points back for kids who need cant wait to take him again hes hilarious, smart, and the best in the department
Prof. Nolan is an amazing person, and he tries his hardest to make the lectures interesting. However, I did not learn a lot in his class and thought there was a lot of bugs work.
Professor Nolan is a wonderful lecturer and advisor. Aside from being incredibly approachable and insightful for all legal inquiries, he utilizes interesting personal anecdotes to supplement the sometimes dull course material. He also gives helpful hints for upcoming exams and papers in class. Must take this course if you're interested in the law.
Only teacher you should take for Scopes. Hilarious and super eager to get to know his students and help them succeed, manages to make Scopes as painless as possible. You definitely have to do the work, but he helps you every step of the way.
BY FAR my fav prof @ Tulane. AMAZING lectures, hilarious guy, super knowledgeable with great research and awesome real life experience. Is a wonderful resource for polisci and prelaw. If you show up, pay attention, and do the homework you will get a good grade but you will also really absorb the info without too much effort. 100/100 would recc.
Nolan is the funniest professor I have had. He evidently cares for all students and just wants each student to pass. With such a difficult topic, he makes the class easy and breaks down the required research paper sentence by sentence. As long as you do what he asks, you will definitely get an A.
Easily my favorite professor at Tulane. Wonderful guy who cares about each and every one of his students. He makes the info accessible and will put in extra time to make sure you're getting it. You don't necessarily have to be in class, but I recommend it because it makes everything so much easier. Want to take more of his classes in the future!
Professor Nolan is the only prof you should take for Scopes. He makes the class manageable and, sometimes, even enjoyable. Homework or a quiz, open notes, due every Sunday, and a final 30 page paper that's essentially fill in the blank from an outline he gives. 10/10 would recommend
I was excited to get up in the morning just to see Prof Nolan. He clearly loves the law and I could listen to talk about cases all day. He was serious at times and funny at times. I would say he's light on the reading but moves fast in class and he gives extra credit but you may not need it. He also gives you his slides!
I apologized to him the second class after walking in late and he apologized to me for how boring the material was. The absolute dullest class but Nolan makes it not suck. Easy to skip class but super smart and sarcastic lectures that are only 50 min so why would you want to. Such a nice guy, you can tell he genuinely cares about his students.
I know without a doubt I got into law school because of Prof Nolan. Go to his office hours for advice. He's so sweet and smart. This semester is my 4th class with him and he always gives us an average amount of reading but his lectures are amazing plus he hands out assignments early and his exams are fun if you like acting like a lawyer or judge.
Professor Nolan is one of my favorite professors at Tulane. He is the reason I am a Political Science major and I take as many of his classes as I can. He makes lectures fun and engaging and is always willing to help. Also, he writes killer letters of recommendation. Cannot say enough good about Professor Nolan; take his class!
Professor Nolan is probably the best prof I've had at Tulane. He tells hilarious stories about himself that relate to the topic and has so much legal knowledge it's insane. Currently in two of his classes, definitely going to take more.
Every time I'm in this dudes class I want to be a lawyer and then I leave and I'm like wait I'm a public health major. He's my favorite professor I've had so far. You can tell he really loves what he teaches.
This is my third course with Dr. Nolan. I absolutely love his classes. He is a great resource for law school guidance and his office hours are a blast. The lectures are fun and interesting. Take his courses when you can!
Nolan is my absolute favorite professor at Tulane. I'm not concentrating in American politics for my PoliSci degree but every other class I have for polisci I have taken with him. Hilarious, tells fun stories, really cares about students, makes you feel smart. I know I'll get into law school because of him. So happy he's full time now!!
The professor I miss most this semester is Prof Nolan, his class was my favorite. NOw that we online students his online Canvas class is the most organized off all my professors and he's not taking points off for late work so I can go at my own pace, thank god.
Prof Nolan is the GOAT literally. His class is super fun and engaging even if you don't wanna go to law school. Although, if you do he is super helpful in getting you there. Take him if you get the chance. Papers are graded easily so if you can get your tier 2 writing with him do it.
I never write reviews but Professor Nolan is unlike any professor I have ever had in my entire academic experience. He cares about his students and treats them with respect and generosity. He makes the material fun to learn about and I never ever dreaded going to his class. As a graduating senior I will genuinely miss you Professor Nolan!!!!
This was my second course with Professor Nolan, and I loved this class. Professor Nolan makes class very interesting, and I looked forward to the class every day. The material was very interesting and I felt like I learned a ton.
I took Nolan's POLA 3010 summer course and it was all online. While I love Nolan's style he gave us sooooo much work to do. With the amount of reading, videos to watch, plus daily assignments, it was almost too much for a five week course. I love this dude but so much work!
He's a very sweet guy, grades really generously, answers emails fast. Definitely an easy A. I took it over the summer thru Zoom so personally it was a lot of work but I'm assuming it'd be easier during the school year. He tends to ramble A LOT unnecessarily so lectures get boring fast but the homework is straightforward and he offers extra credit.
Prof. Nolan is the most comprehensive teacher I've ever had at Tulane. Do not turn down a chance to take on of his classes, they fill up really fast. His lectures are so thorough and taught me exponentially more than I normally take away from other Tulane PoliSci classes. Really hoping I get the chance to take him again before I graduate.
Professor Nolan is obviously super appreciated by students and is super caring and approachable. He was so flexible about everything this semester in terms of due dates and assignments and even though it ended up making the class super easy to do well in, it was still super engaging anyways!
POLS2010 isn't easy because its basically a stats class. The homeworks are extremely long and took me hours to complete and my final paper was 39 pages long. However Prof Nolan is a GOD. He helps you so much on the paper which in total is 50% of your grade. Gives great feedback and makes sure you get a good grade, def take him if you can.
can't say enough good things about prof Nolan. He is an angel & one of the most passionate professors I have ever had. I have taken every course he has offered at Tulane & wish he was teaching something else I could take going into my sr year. His Scopes and Methods class was all online when I took it & it was asynchronous which made it easier!
Professor Nolan is the best! He is extremely smart and has a background in medical malpractice law. His classes are a highlight because he is so funny! He makes everything interesting and is very clear with assignments. I remember so much from that class because of his teaching. He wants the best for his students. Take any class you can with him!!
Professor Nolan is the easiest professor you will ever have. If you actually want to think with your brain and come to nuanced conclusion find another professor. If I need an easy A I will take another Nolan course. I would go to other professors if you actually care about expanding your mind in college.
Nolan is the best teacher I'll probably ever take in my life. He is the reason I became a Political Science major. His lectures are engaging and hilarious and he makes learning fun. His classes are impossible to get in for a reason, he is such a special educator and everyone at Tulane no matter your major should take his class at some point
Professor Nolan is the best professor I have ever had at Tulane, and I will 100% take any opportunity to have him again. I had him for scopes (asynchronous) and he made an extremely intensive and tough course enjoyable. He cares so much about his students and their success. Do not pass up a chance to take him!
Professor Nolan explained concepts very well and went through things with so many examples it was so easy to follow and understand. Quizzes and activities are straight forward. He shared personal stories and research that made the course fun and engaging, he also gives great feedback and advice. Definitely take his classes! best prof I have had
Dr. Nolan gives some of the best lectures. It is like you're listening to a fun podcast. However, his weekly assignments were late to be posted almost every week which would mess up due dates. He is obviously very busy, but that comes with being such a highly sought after polisci professor.
I LOVE Professor Nolan! Every week you have 5 days to complete an assignment where you choose which questions you want to answer, and all the answers can be found in the notes or recordings of class. No tests! Prof. Nolan loves to give extra credit for answering extra questions on assignments or going to events around campus. Highly recommend!
I love professor Nolan his class was my favorite throughout the semester. He is understanding and cares abouts his students. I never missed a class because I was excited to go back every time. The course load is not heavy plus there is extra credit. Hopefully I can take another class with him!
Such an awesome dude with every possible qualification and life experience. If you can get into one of his classes, definitely seize the opportunity. There are weekly "RCAP" assignments which can easily be done using the notes on Canvas and a few outside sources, as well as two papers. Great with extensions and always willing to help students out.
What an amazing Professor and class! Professor Nolan's lectures are very interesting, and if you care even a little bit about the course material, you are bound to be fully invested in the class. You should do the readings, but I found that you can survive from the lectures. Lots of weekly writing assignments but worth the work for his lectures.
Race, sex, and power was the third class I've taken with Dr. Nolan. He is amazing and cares so deeply about his students. This class solidified my interest in the law and law school. Whatever you do, take one of his courses before you graduate!!
Scott Nolan is the best overall professor I've had at Tulane. Aside from great teaching, Scott is an incredibly caring and smart teacher. He deeply cares about his students, the courses he teaches, and politics/law. He does so much on campus for pre-law and politics students, but all students too. I cannot recommend him enough. He also isn't hard
No tests/midterm/final, weekly RCAP assignments can feel like basic regurgitation. Prof is passionate abt LGBTQ+ rights, and courts/law. Lectures are funny and great as a foundation for American systems of government. Lots of opportunities for extra credit. Friday political science discussion seminars suck with the TAs and the Ezra Klein book.
Honestly the best professor I've had at Tulane. He is literally the nicest person ever and his passion for the subject is inspiring. I took his American Government class and it honestly made me want to pursue law school. His class is very writing and reading heavy but there are no tests and he grades well. He also gives very helpful feedback. LOVE!
Really interesting lectures, consistent assignments no exams or papers
Such a kind man. Whole grade is determined by attendance and two weekly assignments. No essays, no exams, no tests, no quizzes. One weekly assignment regarding lecture content, and one weekly assignment regarding a reading. Mostly pretty manageable. He also posts his lectures and slideshows in case you weren't paying attention in class.
Literally just take Prof Nolan if you are a Poli Sci major. His lectures are so engaging and he is such a nice guy. No tests but two weekly assignments that are time consuming, but if you go to class and listen to lecture you can knock them out easily (and they are graded really easy too!!) Easy A, but also an interesting class!!
Professor Nolan is an incredible professor. He is an amazing lecturer and passionate and knowledgeable about what he is teaching. There are no midterms or finals for this class, but you have a weekly essay related to class content and a weekly essay on a book chapter. TAKE THIS CLASS!
If you have the opportunity to take Scott Nolan, do it. Not only are his lectures amazing and worth going to, his weekly assignments (no tests or quizzes, just weekly assignments!) are engaging and don't just feel like a repeat of class. Every time I asked for help or an extension it was provided in a timely manor.
Prof. Nolan is, in my opinion, an extremely strong lecturer that inspired in me an even greater interest in learning about political science. Your grade will be mostly calculated through weekly writing assignments that cover the previous week's lectures. I would especially recommend this class to those interested in attending law school.
I LOVED Professor Nolan's class. He is an amazing and engaging lecturer. There are no tests or quizzes, but the homework takes forever. Attendance is mandatory, but six freebie absences are allowed, so it's not bad at all. I would love to take another class of his in the future!
I love Prof Nolan he is so kind and cares so much about his students. He know how to get the work done and get through the content without making the class your whole life and he really tries to make the content interesting. One of the best professors at tulane and one of the best professors/teachers I have ever had.
Fantastic professor, I strongly recommend.
Love Prof Nolan, has very reasonable expectations. Weekly summary assignments are not difficult, just a bit time consuming. They were really helpful though and I feel like I learned a lot from them. He grades very kindly and offers a lot of extra credit opportunities, although you probably won't need them. No tests, midterm and final paper.
Great class! You learn a lot, but it can be all over the place sometimes. However, the assignments are the typical weekly RECAP writing assignments, which are easy but get more time-consuming later into the semester.
Nolan is the best for scopes! It's a boring class but he fills the lectures with so many fun stories and personal anecdotes that you don't even notice. The big final paper sounds daunting but he structures so much of it that you're barely doing any of the writing for yourself. Cannot recommend enough
Professor Nolan is the best. He's a great lecturer and puts his all into what he does. Very supportive to students and loves to throw out extra credit when people go above the call of duty on assignments. 10/10 professor and 10/10 class
Prof Nolan is the most knowledgeable professor, and finds ways to make content extremely tangible and understandable for his students. He finds ways to incorporate comedy into his lectures, and records every class in case you miss it. His instructions are clear and he is a fair and easy grader. I would take ALL of his classes in a heartbeat
The best! He has the most engaging lectures and amazing stories, understands scheduling conflicts, and always checks in to see if anything is over burdening his class. Would 1000% take again.
Professor Nolan's class is a must-take for Poli Sci majors. Engaging lectures, no exams, just weekly assignments - a real easy A. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for prepping those assignments. Highly recommend this class!
Prof. Nolan is the best teacher/professor I've ever had. He truly encompasses what it means to be a passionate, educated, and helpful mentor. His lectures are never boring, he doesn't have any exams. Just longer writing assignments that will make sure you know the material. Grades fairly and posts slides. 10000% wish I could take his course again.
