Excellent teacher, tough tests, but worth it to be prepared for the hour exams.
Great teacher. Good lectures. sorta hard but helps on exams.
Excellent teacher. The best you'll find in the department.
Very good, has difficult quizzes but they give great prep for hour exams, extremely helpful, courteous, hold attention well, very funny

Northrup is great!! He is funny and an all around good guy. He is very helpful! The course is a little hard, but it's worth it!
Northrup is the man. He really cares about his students and it shows.

Good teacher. Sometimes hard to catch him after class since he's Dept. Chair, but will help you and explains stuff well. Knows some good jokes too. Highly recommend him!
good teacher - has some funny jokes and loves fishing
No Comments
The best teacher by far for basic chem. He likes fishing and talking about his views alot. Sometimes he just stops teaching and starts talking about nothing. Definitly get him.
Fantastic teacher, Explains everything very well and very easy to talk to if help is needed.
Be perpared to work! He is a good teacher but his quizzes are really tough. Take him if at all possible.

Was very clear and would take agian
Very good teach. Presents material well and offers his exact lecture notes for sale at beginning of semester. Good at backing up theory with examples. Will make you work hard but is good about curving grades. THE teacher to take for intro chem.
Good lecturing, keeps you awake. Offers exact notes he uses in class for sale. Quizzes can be tough, but often aren't.
Awesome!
Wonderful man. I come to class just to listen to his humor and geekiness. He relates Chemistry to real life which helps me learn and keeps me interested.

good for teaching a class of 200
He is an aweful teacher, and his jokes are stupid. If it wasn't for a few hot chicks in the class I wouldn't even show up for it. Take someone else, you'll make a higher grade.
best chemistry prof to take--if you have the chance, take his class!!
He is the best-- I wish I could take him again!
although he is very longwinded he is an excellent teacher who can relate chemistry to real world applications. He is the one to take to learn the subject.
I had a friend that had the motorcycle professor, She didn't pass not one quiz, where as I passed all but one of mine. The only difference is she got a C and I got a D. it was bull.
TAKE THIS GUY, he is the man to take for general chemistry. you learn a lot and as long as u go to class, ur sure to pass
This is the coolest nerd in the world. Buy the notes, but the book is unnecessary. Take the practice tests on his website if you need to study. I wish I could have taken him for CHEM 1120.
power-hungry, once in charge of labs in 1120 he tries to be difficult, he is quite unfair, very very unhelpful, he is good at teaching, he just shouldnt have any control
He is the best. He is the most helpful teacher in chemistry department
Dr. Northrup is the best to take for both sections. He is tough, but the most clear. If you go to class and take notes you'll pass fine. You don't need to buy the book. I did, and I haven't even used it, and I got an A in the first section
DR.N. is the best for both 1110 and 1120. Skim the book, read his notes, and go to class and u should make a good grade. Harder quizes than other profs' but same exams. Not as high a curve as other profs' but u'll be MUCH better prepared for next course.
take northrup for chemistry
Very hard class but Northrup is willing to help. He does however pride himself in making questions that no one can answer and does a good job of it.
Northrup is the best chemistry prof. His tests are hard but he prepares you well. GREAT persoanlity and sense of humor. He's sometimes hard to find but always eager to help out.
Not helpful at all he is VERY BORING take Swartling if you can
Dr. Northrup is extremly helpful. The tests are hard and no where near anything like they teach in class. I would however, strongly reccomend Dr. Northrup!
Just take him, because he's good
Dr. Norhtrup is a good teacher and always willing to help. He makes tests hard, but always has you ready for them.He also has practice tests for you to take online.
He's a great teacher, and he explains things well. He is also a very nice guy.
tries to be funny but this class is really hard
He is a pretty decent teacher. He does a good job of explaining everything thouroughly. It seems that I am alone when I say that the tests are pretty mild. If you have a general understanding of the principles of the material you will do fine, but don't go in thinking all the problems will be math.
Good teacher but i could not stand to go to class because it was extremly boring.
funny, explains things very well. quizzes pretty easy, exams a bit difficult. overall, easy class. (but i don't like the daggum owl homework)
Great Guy.
he's a good teacher and i liked him alot. he's not very easy, but neither is the material. my advice: take him
Avoid.
I did not like Northrup. I was told to take him but then the semester after I took him I was told the reason why I didn't do all that good in CHEM 1110 was because I took Northrup. I do not recommend taking him at all. The class is extremely hard no matter who you take it from though.
he is the best teacher, funny and clear, but the class is hard, and he makes it a little easier, study the notes that you get from the bookstore and you should be fine, hard material to understand
Dr. Northrup is the best prof at Tech for general chem. I took him back in the day (before the cushioned seats) and still recommend him to everyone who asks. He was more into the physical chem side of the subject, so if you're an engineering major like me, you'll probably like him more than others.
Dr. Northrup is amazing! I'm a music major taking this course and I understand very well the topics. He's very clear. If you need help, go to his office hours... he's great one-on-one. Highly recommended!
very helpfull and not all that hard. i would advise taking him if you've got a choice.
This class wasn't very difficult. Everything is multiple choice. The tests are a little difficult but not to bad. The quizzes are usually easy. He gives "clicker quizzes" to take attendance sometimes. If you know the answer you get a hundred, if you don't you get a 90, and if you aren't there you get a 0 so I recommend going to class.
Northrup made this class easier to do well in. He is usually very clear and sticks to the notes. He cares about his students and emails us with any questions or additional info. Really great guy, your best bet for chem 1110! Funny too (in a *groan* sort of way!)!
awww poor dude, he wanted a hot sign...so there! he's a pretty cool teacher who can make you laugh at 8 in the morning. He knows a lot about Chem. and what he's talking about!
This class is a lot more difficult than 1110 but just because the material is more difficult. Study the notes and know how to do the owl problems. He is the easiest/most interesting teacher for the class though.
Don't listen to what others say, he is an excellent teacher. Gives about six quizes a semester, and they are average hardness. He usually gives one really hard one, but curves it. Practice exams and quizzes online. Exams are the same for all chemistry classes, and his class average scores are higher than other teachers.
he is a really great teacher....get him if you can he is God and fursch is the devil!!!
As a non-science major, Chemistry is not particularly my thing, but I am thankful I took Dr. Northrup. He is passionate about chemistry, good with students, has a good sense of humor, is easy to get along with, and makes a sincere effort to ensure that as many students pass as possible. Tests are tough, so you MUST study and do OWL homework!
one of the best chem teachers ive ever had, do your homewok andlisten in class and its an easy a
If you had him for 1110, this is harder, but I still made an A. Study more, pay more attention to the OWL, and maybe go to his review sessions (I didn't). He LOVES his students. Oh, and he'll know you by name and add you on Facebook by the end of the semester.
He is a good teacher, but if you aren't good in chem it is HARD!!!! To make the best grade u can go to the help sessions, do the OWL, show up for class everyday, STUDY his tests are HARD! He give extra credit, DO IT!!! If you show any an effort he will try to help you out. Take a late lecture he will put u to sleep in the morning 8 lecture.
Very hard class. Don't take 8 o'clock lecture. Will help you if you need it. Do your OWL, any extra credit he assigns, and go to the study sessions if at all possible. Tests are hard. Study good.
Northrop teaches Chemistry very well. I unlike many love Chemistry so I enjoyed his class and the way he teaches. Do your OWL. Do Extra Credit. Be sure to be in class just in case he gives a clicker quiz(automatic 90 if your there). Study for his Quizes, they are pretty tough. Study and listen and you can make whatever you want.
Verey funny and helpful i enjoyed his class alot, and dont worry if you dont understand he usually gives help sessions before exams.
This class was hard for me because I didn't have a great high school background in Chemistry. Dr. Northrup actually made it eaiser as the semester went along. He helps alot if you ask for it. OWL sucks but you have to do it. If you just put forth some effort you should do okay.
Best Chemistry prof. Take at all costs. Though Dr. Dan is a close second. His classes do the best on all the tests and quizes on average and the curve is based off of him. Typically takes the 8:00 am section, but definitely worth it. Buy the lecture notes, skip the text books.
Very nice guy, very hard class. If you want a good grade in here you have to study your tail off. However, he seems like he would be very willing to help if you need anything at all.
Great guy, hard class. I would make sure not to fail this class just so i wouldnt have to take it again. Dont buy the textbook... you probably wont even use it. This class takes a lot of time especially with the online homework. You have to study for the tests.
Awesome professor! He'll help you in any way. The OWL homework totally sucks, and sometimes the program doesn't even know the right answer. But as for the professor, he's great. It's SO worth waking up at 6:30. Plus, I get a great parking place!! Oh, STUDY for the Tests!!!!
I fit my entire year's schedule around this prof. I woke up every MWF at 6:30 just to take his class! He is by FAR the best gen chem prof at TTU. He will help you with anything. BUT the homework is horrid! You average 200 questions per quiz, which there are normally 5 of. But he's very helpful! Oh, don't buy book! If you want, get 7th edition, ~$2!
Study, study, and study. Really nice guy and good teacher, but chemistry is rough.
This Guys is hilarious. Emailed the whole class a picture of one of the bass he caught in a fishing competition. Cares about his students... offers study sessions before exams. Gives extra credit. Hard Class. Good Teacher. Work for the grade. He'll help you out along the way. Definately the Best teacher compared to the other chemistry teachers.
DON'T get the book unless you are in Firtch's class. You want get any money back from it. Chem 1120 is hard but if you put in a great deal of effort, it will pay off. He is very helpful and wants you to do well
Hard class. Be prepared to study your butt off. Northrup is nice and cares about his students. Sometimes it seems the class is harder than necessary, but he is the best gen chem professor on campus. If chemistry is not your thing, and it is not necessary for your major, I would suggest you take it somewhere else to keep your GPA high.
Ok, so the class is HORRENDOUS! He will help you along the way with extra credit so do all you can! Probably the best General Chem teacher, but Furtsch gives a bigger curve so you need to weigh the options.
Dr. Northrup is a great professor. Gives great lectures, reasonable tests (NEVER any unexpected or tricky questions), a good amount of homework (it's tough, but if you do it all, you do well on the tests). If you see him during his office hours, he'll answer all your questions on the work and will help you bring your grade up. Gives extra credit. :)
I had Northrup for 1110/1120. He is the best professor I have had at tech. I got an A, but I worked for it. Do the online homework. Go to class. I didn't open the book once. I used the online to study. Gives extra credit. It's not easy, but definitely doable. Nothing compared to Organic with Banks.
I think is the best chemistry teacher at tech! Just like any other chem class with studying though. Homework and practice quizzes help you study for the tests so do them.
Wonderful professor! I would definitely take him again. Go to class, do the online hw, and STUDY. Take him!!
If you do the homework, attend the classes, and study for the exams and quizzes you will make at least a B in the class. The clicker quizzes are simple and the homework fairly simple. He is great with explaining things and gives numerous help sessions. Makes the class really enjoyable. I would highly recommend!
I had Professor Northrup for chem 1 and 2. Attend class for clicker quizzes, ace the lab, ace the hw, and do ok on the exams/quizzes and you will make a B. The quizzes are difficult and he pushes you but it is worth it. I learned all the stuff in high school and he did a great job explaining it again to me. TAKE HIM
His class is pointless to go to, but he takes a clicker quiz every day so you have to go. You can learn just as much from reading the book, which still doesn't even come close to preparing you for his quizzes or the tests.
He's a really good teacher, and you have to go to classes for the clicker quizzes. His quizzes aren't really hard. He taught well, but OWL homework probably helped me the most. But I'd definitely take him again.
Dr.Northrup is AWESOME!
He's a pretty nice teacher. Does everything many times to make sure you understand it. If class is hard to you, you probably need to just do the homework.
Professor Northrup is very easily understood. He is a nice guy who cracks jokes and always tries to make sure everyone is following along. His teaching style of teaching through example is great.
I'll be honest. Northrup is a GREAT teacher, but his GEN CHEM class is NOT a walk in the park. This is a math & science school so difficulty is key. Go to his class, do OWL homework, study for his quizzes, and cram cram cram for tests! If you need help, go 2 office and ask him!A primitive class to lay a good foundation for study skills. Take him!
Northrup seems to be a great guy and I enjoyed his lectures. However, I do no enjoy his teaching style or his use of Christian references. This class is extremely difficult for a first year course. If there was less material covered and more emphasis given to difficult concepts then I believe his teaching would be greatly improved.
This class is not a walk in the park, but if you study,do online OWL homework, and do decent in lab you will leave class with a decent grade. For me, the second half of the class was much easier than the first. The quizzes are difficult and the night exams are extremely difficult. He is a great guy(who loves bass fishing)and is very easy to talk to.
Has a help session before nearly every quiz/test. Desires for students to learn.
Dr. Northrup is just spectacular. He truly cares about his students and the subject matter. I would rearrange my whole schedule just to take him for other chemistry classes. Take him! Seriously, he's wonderful!
He's easy compared to the other chemistry professors and a great teacher. The only downside is he incorporates his own religious beliefs into his material which I believe is not professional. Though overall, I would recommend this professor.
Great professor even better looking!
Dr. Northrop might be the hottest teacher I have ever had. He's a must take for pchem
I got through this class with minimum studying
Good teaching combined with good humor. He's definitely one of my favorite professors I've ever had.
Looking at Dr. Northrup always gives me a good reason to wake up in the morning
Hottest professor on campus. I've heard the other chemistry professors cry at night because they can't compare. Good class.
Overall, great Professor. I really enjoyed his class.
