Run as fast as you can!!!! His lectures are boring and you have a paper due every week. If it weren't for his class I would have been on the Dean's List. The best grade I ever got on a paper was a B and I was one of the lucky ones. He's a nice guy, but his class is rough and I wouldn't recommend it.
I thougth the class was really intersting... he expects a lot of reading and there usually is a paper due every week, but come on, suck it up. They arent that hard heh greades on a check scale! He is really intersting if you listen to him so get over your whinny ****, it's college.
his lectures are interesting...but he grades too hard on his papers....its hard to get higher than a B! his unclear on what his looking for in papers....so if you are concerned about grades dont take him...he assigns alot of reading but they are very intresting.....his really smart without being arrogant
Hard grader on papers~
Do not take his class! He is a really tough grader and expects way too much of freshman! I don't think anybody enjoyed that class! It's supposed to be somewhat easy discover chicago and it ended up being more work than my other three classes combined! He tries to help, but frankly doesn't make any sense!
he makes you write a serious paper every week which is due BEFORE he even begins disussing the material. he also grades the paper harder than any english teacher ever does! he expects way too much of his students and when you go to with questions, he is very rude. i would not recommend him to my worst enemy!!
Interesting lecture and overall nice guy but, he graduated from Princeton and assumes his students did the same, extremely hard gradder. If you need to get an A DO NOT take his class.
He's a nice teacher & interesting but he really encourages discussion & even calls on people who havent said anything in the class period. There is a paper due every week but just ask for an extension and he'll give it to you, grades hard but gives you opportunities to improve your grade by going to outside events & writing about them.
Brilliantteacher. He really knows his stuff and delivers it in a great way but is a hard grader. We had 3 papers and then a very long final paper on a pretty difficult subject. Received an overall B in the class.Read a book a week (200 pgs approx).Nice thing was the classes - all discussion, and was student run. Great class if wasnt for papers.
he is very liberal other than that good
Rel & Globalization: only 5 students enrolled, one of which never showed up. Class discussion, as one would expect from such a small class, was amazing. Read 5 books, wrote a critique on 2 of our choosing, & a final paper. Very intelligent. I learned more from Prof Paeth than from any other prof at DePaul. Highly recommended. One of DePaul's best.
This teacher is an amazing teacher. Really encourages class discussion. There is a lot of reading that he assigns and he is a tougher grader, but he's very helpful and available if you have any questions. His class was one of my favorites. Very understanding if you have problems.
I really enjoyed the class, there were no exams, your grade was based on 4 papers. He was fair on the grading, if you put in some effort to your papers you can get a B, but it was really hard to get an A. Dont take the class if you do not like to read. We had to read 5 books for the class.
Paeth is an excellent teacher. It's easy to get a B but very difficult to get an A. He is a hard grader but the class is worthwhile. His lectures are interesting and easy to understand. He's liberal, extremely intelligent and knowledgeable. No exams :) If you like to write take this class.
Very good teacher, places emphasis on debate and writing. Writing needs to be strictly adherent to prompts. He said himself he does not believe in multiple choice tests. People taking his class should expect a B, but receiving an A is very tough.
Worked my butt off just to get a B in the class. Have to read like 60 pages for each class. Final paper is worth 35% of your grade! I was averaging a solid A (Got an A on all my papers) before I got a B on the Finals and that lowered my final grade to a B in the class.
He is a simple teacher. Anyone who can't at least get a B in his class has a problem. He doesn't believe in multiple choice test so all you have to do is write about 4-5 papers for his class. He is an easy professor.
Very nice teacher, but semi-hard grader, he exspects a lot of reading but you can make it with a B without basically reading any. You have to write 4 or 5 papers and one is about a book. This class was very interesting at times.
great teacher. very interesting class. a lot of reading, but most of it is interested. I recommend to take this class!!
Good teacher, but lots of readings everyday for class. Helpful with papers.
Awesome! He could just as well be teaching International or Peace studies. A lot of reading and Writing, but the class discussions were very interesting. Texts are from many diverse viewpoints.
horrible teacher,i highly recommend not taking him..he doesn't even talk about the class, always off topic..
Class was mostly discussion, with few notes. The professor is really smart and a really nice guy; wished he would've spent more time going over info. relating to the papers. LOTS to read, and 500-wrd posts on BB every class. Learned a lot on war theory-Chrisianity and Islam-and Iraq. Take it if you're into these topics.
If you are not up to reading almost 200 pages a week and buying 6, yes 6! textbooks...don't take him. I think he could be a good teacher, maybe I just was not interseted...but I think a lot of the reading was useless. Repetition and just mucha-do about nothing. He doesn't offer enough guidance, and seems to play favorites..thats no good.
This teacher is horrible. The worst teacher I have ever had in my life.He doesn't teach, just lets people talk. All he does is make you read 200 pages a week(this is the only form of learning).Class was so boring.
This man is set in his methods and will not change unless he feels like it. He requires you to use Chicago Style (which no one else uses), justifies decisions with "because I said so" argumentation and requires excessive amounts of work. Avoid at all costs.
Eventhough the professor is passionate about the subject, class gets Extreeeeemly boring. There's lots of talking, reading and writing. I am not kidding... You have to force yourself to write ljournals for each class and give your opinion. Taking the class during summer is a heavier load, but at least you wouldn't have to deal with it for 10 weeks!
This teacher is horrible..I don't know why he makes you come to class when he doesn't even talk about what the 200 pages he just made you read..He is boring and I didn't learn much in his class.
I came to this class with absolutely no interest in religion but Dr. Paeth was able to change this. I don't know how he did it but maybe it was because he clearly knows what he is doing and i always thought religion is all about church stuff. And he's kinda hot too.
When I signed up for business ethics, it was only because I had to. But his class was entertaining, I learned a lot about both ethics and the workings of the economy, and we had intelligent class discussions that often had nothing to do with the readings. It was great.
Focal point seminar...extremely boring. I didnt learn anything. He made us read 7 books. Wayyy too much reading. Discussions suck and go way off topic. I do not recommend him.
Horrible teacher..The worst teacher I have ever taken at Depaul..He makes you read over 200 pages for class then doesn't even talk about the readings..Save yourself and don't take him..
GREAT TEACHER!!! He does make you read a lot and depending on you class the discussions may go off topic, but having the discussions go off topic is the best part of the class. The readings are relevant to the course and he chooses them for a reason so do the readings. He's understand and will let you modify his essay assignments if you ask him.
Mr. Paeth expects way too much reading. There is little reason to read the books as the discussions rarely if ever have anything to do with the readings. The class seems interesting. But he always seems to have more important work to do than grade the papers. I knew the grade for only one of my papers before the group project. His grading is t
There are a lot of books to read but as the prof says you don't need to read every single page. He's very well read and that makes discussions interesting. Participation is important and it doesn't have to relate to the readings so speak up. Ask for help on papers if you're confused. Proofread your work and you'll be fine.
BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS! I think this man is the king of books, if you visit his office they are literally every where. Needless to say, you'll do a good amount of reading. Thought this class would be about RELIGION and WAR but we've mostly just talked about War, and finally getting into religion in the second half of the quarter... overall an OK class.
Read and you'll do fine. There are 3 papers: 2 small, 1 research (final), and weekly online postings. He's really interesting/smart, and as long as you ask the right questions he?ll stay on topic of the books. He does, however, bring up themes not presented in class that can be confusing. Read, read, read!
GREAT TEACHER, if u have a change make sure you take him. One of the most brilliant people i have ever encountered...make sure you read though, class discussions are a lot of fun but you need to know your stuff
If you are complaining about reading and writing, you need to realize you're in college and not grade school. There is a lot of reading and writing yes,but Dr.Paeth helps you through it.Discussions do go off on tangents, but overall a great class and his passion for his work means you'll learn a lot!
This guy is the worst combination of teaching habits. A.) Doesn't talk about the reading in class B.) Expects you to read 7 books over 9 weeks C.) Requires attendance. And the final paper - 20 scholarly sources for a 10 page paper!? If you like Jesus, he's your man, but if you just need a religion credit AVOID.
Great Teacher. He does his job and he does it well.
Overall Dr. Paeth is a great teacher. While there is a lot of reading for this class, it is not always required to participate in class. We did not always stay on topic but none-the-less learned a ton. No test. 2 short papers and 1 long. He gave several extra credit chances. Recommended.
The worst professor yet. Do not take him unless you want to be buried under piles of books and spend the class listening to mindless discussions. Learned nothing!
Though I had to take his class for a religion requirement, I'm happy I did. Prof. Paeth is very nice and interested in the subject matter. There is alot of reading, but most of the material is thought provoking. There are 2 short papers and 1 long one and thats it really, besides reading and attendence. Made me respect what he teaches.
The best Professor DePaul has to offer. If you're looking for someone who is passionate about what they teach, Paeth is the one you want.
Great teacher, a fountain of knowledge. Discussions in his class were the most thought-provoking and interesting ive had. Also, a pretty good sense of humor.
Professor Paeth really is passionate about the subject. With that said, do not take his summer class if you are looking for a blow-off. Took it just to get the credit in and worked pretty hard for the grade. A lot of readings (I read this before taking the class too).
I'm not going to lie, the readings can get very dense and overwhelming. Be sure to stay on top of everything, attend class, and take lots of notes! I was dreading taking a religion class, the class discussions were awesome, and he's also funny, nice, and more than willing to help if you're lost. I highly suggest him, but stay motivated!
I really enjoyed this class and learned so much from Professor Paeth. He's so passionate about the work he does, which makes it hard not to stay engaged.
One of the hardest classes I've taken at DePaul so far. He is passionate and knowledgeable with his teachings, but it was tough to keep up with the class.
He's super passionate about what he teaches but don't take this class if you aren't willing to put in a lot of work. The readings are very intense and very long. And there's a 10 page research paper due at the end of the course.
One of the best professors DePaul has to offer. Extremely intelligent man who cares about stimulating intelligent dialogue in his students. Many of my friends who took this class maintain a personal connection with him. One of my favorite professors by far.
LOTS of work, but well worth it. This class is exactly what we should be going to college for -- regardless of the workload, he genuinely cares about the material and does his best to help you through it. Deeply intelligent (it's hard not to have an intellectual crush on him), kind, and funny. If you like learning and working for it, go with him
Professor Paeth is a very intelligent guy, and makes many references throughout his lectures to help understand the material. Despite him being a very good teacher, he did assign our class three medium-sized essays and a research paper along with a good amount of reading. If this isn't too daunting to you I would highly recommend taking him.
I had him for my FPS class, he was great! We had 4 papers, pretty clear expectations and he was always willing to meet outside of class to help clarify anything. Good at connecting reading to discussions. Participation in discussions is a must and you have to do at least some of the reading so you can contribute. An understanding and helpful guy.
Weekly, you have to read a 250-300 page book not including articles and videos on line. Then write a 1000-1500 word paper and two 500 word discussion threads on D2L for 5 weeks. If you're looking for an easy summer course this isn't for you, might want to think about the other options for LSP 200.
Scott is brilliant. Brilliant. He knows so, so much, and he's a fantastic lecturer. That being said, the amount of reading is downright unreasonable. Five books, some short, some longer, and a discussion board post for each class. Bear in mind that he assigns up to 100 pages per class. If you don't have the time to read, don't take this course.
Had his class last quarter and really learned a lot about the complexities of Christianity. Wasn't too excited about having to take a religion class, but I was intrigued by his lectures and the thoughts he inspired in us were stimulating. A VERY intelligent, well read man. Pay attention, stay off of the laptop, and learn TONS from him about life.
Professor Paeth encourages thoughtful discussion both inside & outside the classroom. His reading list is long, but engaging. As a would be community organizer, I got to PAX 300 (senior seminar) & found myself wishing that the reading list had come around sooner. Finally, we got to talk about organizing!
I had Dr. Paeth in 2008. The course was called "The Maps of Heaven and Hell". It's been 8 years since I took Dr. Paeth's course and it still ranks as the most intellectually intense, spirited, and important undertakings of my life. Be prepared to be questioned, to have your beliefs challenged, and your head spun, but you'll be better for it.
Terrific professor. You have to do the work, but it pays off. Really good in-class discussions.
One of the best teachers I ever had. Great with students, very kind and competent, Scott always brought the best our of everyone. Great teacher!
Dr. Paeth is a well respected theologian that has taught me a great deal. He cares deeply about the material and the students he teaches. He is always willing to respond to questions and challenges his students to evaluate the subject matter critically.
Paeth was one of the best instructors I had at DePaul- mostly due to the fact that he challenges everyone (students, fellow teachers as well as guest speakers) to think critically. As an adult student in my last years of undergrad- I appreciated it and my work was the better for it.
One of the best professor I have had. I am a Muslim and took religion class with Dr Paeth. He was always open to listen to my ideas and actually taught me a few things about Islam. Amazing professor highly recommended!!
I took my first DePaul class (Discover Chicago) with Dr. Paeth and it was an excellent introduction to the city and to the field of religious studies. Picked excellent textbooks and led classroom discussions that made you think about big questions.
Professor Paeth was a blast. The class was a great deal of fun, and the material was presented in a challenging, engaging manner. He was very communicative and easy to work with, happy to answer questions or just have a conversation about the material.
Scott is a pretty good professor. At first, he comes off very condescending, but as the quarter goes on it becomes clear that he really cares about the subject matter and is just a really smart, nerdy person. A lot of reading that, at times, is unreasonable. His lectures are also vague and often not organized, so the reading is often necessary.
One of the most intelligent professors at DePaul. Six years later and I still remember the class and what I learned. Would rank him in my top 5 at DePaul and I wasn't even passionate about the topic we were studying.
I had Dr. Paeth for a SCUPE course. Amazing class, amazing prof.
Dr. Paeth was and is the best professor I've had, ever, hands down. I had him for two different classes, and both times he was engaging, knowledgeable, and friendly. He's open to debate in his classes, and he really knows what he's talking about. Every DePaul student should take a class with him, whether or not the class matters to their major.
Dr. Paeth was an awesome professor.
Professor Paeth was one of the best and most memorable professor that I had during my 4 years at DePaul University. His classes were challenging yet allowed me to reconsider my positions as well as really made me ponder the discussion topics of morality. These very personal topics were presented in a truly non-biased and intelligent way.
I currently am one week shy of completing my graduate degree from Northwestern University, and Professor Path is still one of the best professors I have ever had. The lectures/assigned readings were interesting and engaging. Not an easy A, but well worth the work. I still find our class discussions relevant in my current line of work.
Originally, I was not very excited about DePaul's Religious Dimensions requirement. However, I became so interested in the area after taking two courses with Professor Paeth that I also took an independent study course with him. These courses helped me realize that I was interested in learning more about public policy rather than Business.
At first I wasn't a huge fan of Paeth but over the quarter I really grew to like him. He is a VERY smart person and sometimes comes off condescending, but his lectures were overall very good. He shows videos and is a big nerd, plus he talks about other authors that you're free to explore if you're interested. Take him, he's one of DePaul's best.
I do not rate professors but I was eager to make a rating for Paeth. He is the smartest person I've ever met. His lectures make me want to come to class. He really gets you thinking. It's fun to disagree with him just to see what he'll say. 4 small papers and reading isn't that mandatory. I loved him
Dr. Paeth is my favorite teacher I have had at DePaul. His lectures are amazing and they feel personal. I am considering picking up a bioethics and society minor because of the impact his class has had on me. He is also super funny. Take this class.
Awful class. Dr. Paeth was late daily, didn't show up to class multiple times, took weeks to grade papers and then there was absolutely zero feedback. I took this class based off other reviews, but I will avoid his classes in the future. Waste of a quarter. Class was assigned a large amount of reading, but it was rarely discussed.
I took Prof. Paeth for Evolution and Intelligent Design (LSP112 course) and it was very intriguing. Participation was basically mandatory because he wanted to hear our thoughts and opinions but this made the class even more interesting. He is very smart and challenges his students to think beyond their current ideologies. Would recommend.
made going to class bearable, was very knowledgeable and open to other ways of thinking.
Took one of his religion classes and was the most boring class. He is really smart no doubt that but not everyone is passionate about it the subject. He takes forever to grade papers which is annoying because when it comes time to write the final paper you have no feedback to go off of. There is some extra credit offered that can help.
nothing to say but he's super boring man. Also takes forever to give grades back.
The prof seemed nice but this class had a ridiculous amount of work and was unorganized.
Lots of reading and lectures. Six textbooks and one huge group project. Makes you work for it. He is a nice guy and really smart but listening to him at 9 am was not the highlight of my week.
Took Scott Paeth to fulful my Focal Point seminar. He expect us to read and understand so much material and would get very angry if we didn't have anything to contribute to during discussion and accused us of being lazy and was offended if we didn't read. Definately deserved an A and got a B. Try to avoid taking him if you can.
he had 5 required textbooks and wanted to get through them very quickly. he talks very fast and is boring. takes forever to give back grades. he set up a group project for the class but made no class time for groups and is not cooperative with commuters who don't have time to work with groups outside of class.
Lots of reading. Most of the grade is determined by 3 papers + the final. He's a pretty easy grader for the papers, but you have to do discussion posts twice a week on the reading so you atleast have to read a few pages to be able to write something that sounds insightful. As a non-christian in a christian ethics class I felt very welcomed.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Ridiculous amount of readings and papers for a 10 week course. The books he assigns are very hard to comprehend and his lectures are extremely boring. Definitely the worst class Ive taken at DePaul thus far. If you can, take literally any other Focal Point Seminar class and get the credit with a different professor.
This class was really interesting, but not worth it. He doesn't grade papers until the very last minute and gives little to no feedback. SO MUCH reading and expects everyone to master the content even in the first week or two. Barely any rubrics or criteria to follow for assignments, I would not recommend this professor at all.
There are 3 "short" papers, about 6 pages, and one final paper 10-12 pages, all are graded extremely tough. The bi-weekly discussion posts are just tedious and rarely used in class, and in-class discussion is usually irrelevant. About 4 books need to be bought and read in their entirety, most are confusing and never explained, Good Luck.
LSP112: It was always a drag coming to this class because there was never a set lesson plan, the lectures always felt unorganized and confusing. you're going to have to purchase 5 different books (unless you find the online versions which I just recommend you do!) There are weekly journals and papers that are usually based on text.
prof Paeth is a cool dude had him for LSP112 science and religion and he's great at conversation and knows what he's talking about so get ready to participate. very very reading heavy read like 5 books ish but you can get away with skimming but it makes it hard to participate in conversation. Overall great guy would recommend
He knows what he's talking about so he's very interesting to listen to in lectures. There's a lot of reading but tbh I rarely did it and passed all my assignments. He never took attendance in my class but it was quite small, and even though it was a seminar, I never spoke a word and somehow passed. Cool dude, 10 page paper as a final though.
Scott Paeth is a good professor and did not grade too harshly as people say he does. If you read the books, then you will be able to do well on the essays. I don't recommend this for a summer class because there was a 3-page paper due every week and 300-500 pages to read every week. Overall I was skeptical because I hate writing, but it was not bad
We read 5 entire books in 10 weeks, wrote three "short" papers, on top of a discussion post before every class and the classic 10-page honors final paper. Tbh you don't have to pay attention in lectures to do well, it's all based on reading. I got the same exact grade on every paper so idk if he reads them. An interesting class but a lot of work
Professor Paeth is a very intelligent, caring, and fun person to teach this class. Has a lot of personality and is always encouraging discussion, thoughts and opinions. Lots of homework for REL252, but Professor Paeth is one of the best religion teachers at DePaul. I've taken him twice and it's always been a great experience. Great guy overall too
I loved having Professor Paeth, he is a very very nice man (dad vibes) and he's funny in his lectures too. The REL 351 class is super interesting, even if you are not religious, but it does require a lot of reading and writing. I would recommend it if that's your strong suit. Overall an awesome guy!
This class was ridiculous - Well over 1000 pages of reading material and well over 10,000 words written for papers. Harsh grader, and barely returns any feedback. Took almost the entire quarter for him to grade assignments. Also, the class has a 2,500 word research paper at the end of class that is rarely spoken about all quarter. Don't take this.
Professor Paeth is a great person with great insight into religion. The class was super interesting and had you thinking about different views of despair & hope. The class is not easy and has a heavy workload. You write a paper a week and have to read at least 100 pages of a book a week. The final paper is 2,500 words. Great Professor/Hard Class
Professor Paeth is a caring and engaging teacher. While the workload is heavy, his lectures are informative and discussion-based. Unstuck AI proved helpful for essay prep.
so i don't actually go to depaul and ive never taken one of his classes by dr. paeth is actually my pastor. he is awesome and all of the great reviews of his teaching matches is great pastoring. love this guy.
