good teacher. do all extra credit and assignments and study all questions on the study guide and you'll do well. take good notes and use the book as a reference.

Can you say boring?! Mr. Porteous obviously really knows his stuff, but his monotone voice makes everything he says go in one ear and right out the other....study hard, do extra credit, and you'll ace the class.

too easy, take this course, don't have to buy book. all questions on test come off study guide and answers all questions day before test. plus EC available, too easy.

I love this man, even if i fail he was still a very good no great teacher, very leanit, and very helpful, he knows most of us are not goin to be rocket scientist, recommend him before his class fills up, i even told my g/f to go with his class

Excellent instructor with a great, slightly warped sense of humor (my favorite kind). I was really dreading taking Biology, but Mr. Porteous made it all so clear and easy to understand. I highly recommend him.

Way cool guy. Likes science but makes it applicable and interesting. Very understanding if you've got other problems but has a good **** detector, so watch it. Made a potentially horrible class fun. One of the best experiences @ City ever. Take him if you can.

I love this guy. Very easy on the eyes and his enthusiasm can be contagious. Can also bore you to tears...must admit, I fell asleep most classes.But he knows his stuff and makes the class easy to pass with moderate effort.

MR. Porteus makes Biology interesting and fun to learn

The easiest class at city. Never opened the book, got a 98%. He assigns a couple papers, but he gives everyone 100% as long as you do the bibliography/citing right. Not incredibly boring. He was funny actually. But most of all, EASY.

Porteous is the first teacher, who got me to love biology. He's an awesome teacher. I would definatly recommend him to anyone.

He's a really great teacher. He tell's you that you can fail all the tests, do all the work and pass with a 'C. But, he doesn't mean fail the tests with 30 and 40 percents, you have to get at least a 50% on all to get a C. He's really willing to help you with any questions and everthing comes from his lectures. Great guy, funny at times too!

Awesome teacher. Looks like Woody Harrelson's older brother. I honestly studied twice for this class... and that was 15 min before the test. Gves you his lecture tests to study for the final and the questions are pretty much the same. Very helpful. I didnt buy anything for this class except the lab book and got an A.

Scott is fun, very clear, and a great teacher. He makes the class very interesting and you can come away with so much. He isn't hard as long as you pay attention (take notes or read the book). I would definately take him again.

Overall, his a great teacher who makes biology interesting. He can be funny at times which makes biology fun and not borry. His very helpfull he you need help with anything. This class can be very easy if you attend to his class and take notes, the book can be helpful if biology is a weak subject for you. I highly recommend Mr. Porteous.

Mr. Porteous truly loves Biology, and that is why I'd recommend him. His lectures are really boring at times, but he's very approachable and very clear of what's expected from his students. The class is fair in difficulty as long as you keep up. For the book, you don't need it if you attend all the lectures, but you will if you miss them.

I was really afraid to take a Bio class, being that I am not good at science. But Porteous was super clear, gave extra credit, and was very straight forwards on what to expect on the tests. I even got an A! I would definitely recommend him!

Excellent teacher, easy to understand and makes sitting through lectures bearable with humor. We only had two lecture exams which he gave back to us to study from for the final. He used the exact questions for the final, so study from those and you're golden.

Mr. Porteous made the class so much fun, he is really passionate about the subject and you will learn a lot and be positively influenced if you actually take in what he says. I'm thinking about majoring in Bio now, I really loved this class. He's easy going and a real nice guy, a definite must-take class with him teaching.

Really Easy! If you go to all the classes and the labs you will get an A for sure. All the material for the tests come straight from your notes. He also gives you a study guide for each lecture and lab tests. He makes lecture fun because he makes little jokes. Take him for Bio 3!

His lectures/labs are enjoyable because he is such an entertaining guy, and I actually like going to class. His tests are all from the study guides, and they super easy/straight forward. Mr. Porteous is the best professor I've had so far at FCC. He is so passionate about what he is teaching, and he really wants all of his student to do well. It's kind of hard not to get an A in his class with all the opportunities he gives you.

A very fun and enjoyable class. Explains material in a clear and understandable fashion. There are lecture tests and lab tests which are simple if you do some studying. Textbook is not needed as long as you take good notes. You DO need the lab book to complete the labs. Overall,one of the most enjoyable classes.Fills up extremely fast so take him!

Professor was a pretty funny guy. The workload is pretty easy, almost no homework at all. Do yourself a favor and do the flora fauna thing early, its a pain to do last minute. One research paper. Labs are relatively easy. Field trips are mandatory, have to bring your own transportation. Good class, teacher is funny, pretty good experience.

Honestly one of my favorite teachers at city. I recommend him to everyone. He is so enthusiastic about teaching. His tests are pretty much his lectures, word for word. He's flexible to student schedules. I genuinely enjoyed his class greatly, always went home quoting new facts I had learned in biology. He made me excited to learn. AMAZING TEACHER!

you will work in this class, but hey, it's for science majors. That said, Porteous made the material interesting an fun. His tests were solid and injected with humor. His lectures were the same way. A good teacher to get if you can.

Amazing teacher can't complain.Do yourself a favor and do the flora fauna weekly or just make notes of their names!! Do the study guide and you should pass the test. Also pay attention when you're selecting the time of the course because I thought I was getting a good time until I found about lab and had to take the 8AM lab

Overall, a great professor who is very passionate about the things he teaches. He is very entertaining and always willing to help you understand anything you need help on. Offers extra credit to help you out. If you attend the lectures and the labs, you will pass with at least a B; BUT put in the effort.

3 exams (including final) and for final questions, all multiple choice and they include questions from the 2 previous exams (which he gives back to you to study for the final). 2 lab exams. Very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. He's kind and willing to help! I wouldn't mind taking another one of his classes.

Do the FloraFauna early, same with your lab notebook. The better the lab notebook, the better you do on the lab test. Very little homework. If you don't have the book, read his powerpoints. Whatever he draws on the board, it is more than likely going to be on an exam. Same with the random things he says on trips. Awesome professor.

Mr. Porteous is one of the best teachers for bio11A. He is very smart and funny. Must pay attention to pass and do all the assignments. Also make sure to study in order to do good. He won't give you an easy grade if you don't study. 2 lecture tests, 2 lab tests and a final. Take Porteous if you can you won't regret it.

I absolutely loved this class! I missed a great deal of time in the semester due to an injury but he helped me get through it! There is alot of work in this class and it pills up at the end. Put as much detail in your lab book as possible and really study for his tests! Even though i missed half the semester i was able to get a B in the class.

Mr. Porteous is nice teacher and hilarious. He knows his stuff, but he is not an organized teacher he goes all over the place that's the bad thing. Overall good teacher he is there to help you succeed in the class. This class is hard no matter who you take just study hard. Go to his office hours that's the clue to pass his class. Ask qs too

Mr. Porteous is very influential instructor. I did not enjoy the content of the class, but I certainly enjoyed the instructor. He works hard to make sure his students understand him, and he is usually available to meet with students after class to discuss the material. I would definitely take Porteous!!!!! He is extremely resourceful.

Scott is a G. Honestly such a cool guy and made tha class really enjoyable. Super flexible on turn in dates too. If you talk to him he'll be willing to help you figure out what you need to do to Bump your grade up too. Take his class homies you won't regret.

Prof Porteous is hands down the best science instructor at Fresno City College and has a genuine passion for teaching. Besides being a great guy he is highly knowledgeable and brings a high level of energy to the classroom everyday. He offers so many points for assignments, projects, participation and extra credit that you are guaranteed an A!

Lectures are very informative but its too much information, so I felt lost. Many fun trips where you actually get to interact with the ecosystem. The ppt slides are only pictures and you will have nothing to study from for he quizzes. You really need to research the net on you on and take heavy notes to get a good grade.

Really passionate about what he teaches. Really makes the class enjoyable and has a hilarious personality. Attendance is not mandatory for lecture but for lab, in order to pass you have to show up to do the work. End of the semester there is some field trips!

Dr. Porteous is one of my favorite professors I have taken. There is a lot to learn in this class so be prepared. The study guides he provides for each exam outline what is going to be on the exam. Do the study guides and add everything from lab into your lab notebook. He is VERY disorganized and his lectures are all over the place. Easy class.

Dr. Porteous is an amazing instructor. He truly cares for his students and really wants each and everyone to learn. His lectures may go off topic, but whatever he talks about pertains to the chapter in some type of way, and will be on the exam. Not to mention, we get to go to the zoo for cheap & get extra credit pts. He's always willing to help!

Mr. P is the best prof ever. There is a lot to learn in Bio 11b, so get ready for it. His exams are easy if you study everything he puts on his study guide. Final is comprehensive. Free field trip to morro bay RECOMMEND YOU TO GO. You'll learn a lot from it. XCREDIT is given throughout course. HE WANTS YOU TO PASS! Same with LAB! Take lots of pics

I had Professor Porteous for spring 2020, he has so much enthusiasm in his lectures, hes super funny and has high energy. Lab was fun and easy, youll only need your lab book, the other books really are not needed. Do the extra credit, study for your exams and youll do fine. Also take advantage of his embedded tutor.

Nice Professor. Lecture is a bit boring but slides are helpful and reliable. Study guides is helpful for the test make sure to do them. There are a lot of paperwork and there are lab homework every week. Make sure to do all of them asap or they will pile up. 25 points extra credit so take advantage. Very communicative.

He is an amazing professor. I was terrified of taking a biology class. He was very clear about everything and his lectures were easy to follow. He is very passionate about the subject which makes his teaching engaging. He will give you any help you need, and if he cant help you directly he will direct you to someone who can! Professor Porteous made biology thoroughly enjoyable. His lectures are a lot of fun, and he always cracks me up. He's a truly nice guy and is always there to help or answer questions. It's obvious that he wants his students to succeed, and I appreciate that so much.

Mr P is one of the greatest!! Was worried about this class early on, but he makes things clear and is always willing to go over things again! I wish i was able to have taken his class in person! Work seems like a lot, but he grades within reason of course! Plenty of changes for extra credit! Effort counts, don't hesitate to ask questions!!

If you have the opportunity to take this class 100% TAKE IT! You won't be disappointed! Took the class online, and we sadly couldn't go on any of the planned field trips. If you are taking this class in person just pay attention and have fun! Great lectures, and like any other class if you do the work you will pass with no problem.

He literally let e go on my phone the whole time an nap everyday, but other than that he's super chill and funny and cool. Like he's the professor that are on those tik toks who everyone thinks is cool. But he also makes learning easy and fun

By far one of the best professors that I've had the privilege to be a student under. Sadly, he will no longer be teaching as he a retiring. He was extremely kind and respectful to all students.

Can take a while to grade things but he does get to them, tests aren't hard, he makes study guides, make sure to go to class, overall a great professor!

I wish I could give Professor Porteous a higher rating but I just can't. The class was fairly easy but I did not feel I learned much. The lectures were unorganized and sometimes rushed but he does do a good job of explaining what will be on the exam. There was a free field trip to Morro Bay which was very fun and a lot of extra credit.
