This teacher suck. He should be fired.
This guy is SO SO SO easy. He thinks we're still in kindergarden. I suggest this teacher. Easy, Easy, Easy.
The (only) Comp.Sci. teacher is good to work with, helpful lectures, appropriate prog. assigns/labs. Curves and has multi-part (scan/short/prog) exams. Pretty easy if you're serious about CS. Personality OK if a bit picky over things like style,PC use,foo
Even though I got an A in his class I still hate this teacher. CLC should fire this guy because he does not know what he is doing.
I think that this teacher was great. He was very nice and very helpful. He was the only teacher in CLC that i enjoyed. In addition, he is not a very hard grader as long as you do what you're supposed to.
Don't take his classes because he is such a bad teacher. When we took a quiz only three people finished but he did not care that he made it imposibly long, so the class got screwed. He is not clear and very hard to understand. I have an A because I have had to teach myself. Just take a diff. class.
This guy is an easy professor. He's more than fair on his grading and his material is pretty clear. Our class got to use a note card on each exam, and the homework and projects were a breeze. Just another math class...learn the stuff and plug in numbers.
He spends 20 minutes talking about something totally unrelated to the class, then explains in 2 minutes something that should have taken the whole class. I hate being in class and have had to teach myself everything from the book. He's in love with the calc. and doesn't relys on it too much. Admitted he's only a teacher for the vacations.
A nice, funny layed back teacher!
Scott is a nice guy but is a horrible teacher. He curves his test to make himself look better. It actually took him a month (not an exaggeration) to grade the one test, seldom graded "program assignments". Scott is an awful teacher. Too lazy to make new test took test from another text book. Ask for a study guide he'll give you the test.
He was a great teacher. He really helps you pass the class, if you show him you really can do it!
Mr. Reed is an excellent teacher. You will have no problem passing his class, just show up and do as he ask and you should have no problems. grading is light and wants his student to pass. If you fail this class it's because YOU wanted to. Take this class and you are guaranteed to pass plus he takes his time to explain the material. Great instructo
This guy is easy. when people complain they didn't put forth the effort. He made himself avali. PLUS the math center was there for added help. Easy, easy class. I haven't had algebra in 12 years. I was able to understand AND PASS! good teacher.
Good teacher. Easy to pass as long as you come to the class and do the hw.
His memory on the subjects are not very good. you have to go online to reteach yourself. you also need to pay extra money online to do the manditory homework. the only good thing is that he curves everything.
Took this as a summer accelerated online class. He answered questions and was a little slow to get exams back but I got an A and he was helpful clarifying problems. You need to dicipline yourself with these classes and the online Mathlab is invaluable. Great learning tool!
well...lets see...very hard to understand...i have taught everything i was suppost to learn myself, by the book...makes pointless jokes, makes the class boring, does not explain anything (just does it on the board)...I do not like this teacher and would not recommend him to anyone!
Was a very good teacher. At some times it was hard to understand but he is an extreamly fair grader and a predictable test giver. Reading the chapters will help, I read the first 7. Verry nice person. I highly recommend
Okay teacher. He told me that if i did bad on a few quizzes or didnt turn in a couple of homework assignments they would be erased from my grade. Not true, also does not explain things very well. If you know what your doing i reccomend him, if not id look else where.
He is a good guy.Yes,don't expect to learn a lot in his class but it's not a big deal if math is not your priority. You can negotiate with him a lot, easy grader, curves everything. And willing to help you. However, very slow in grading tests and projects
He is a very nice guy! Very easy grader, curves the grades a lot ! He wants you to have a good grade! Although do not expect to learn a whole lot!
Good algebra morning!
Uses Blackboard for communication.
I actually got a B in math for the first time in my life. Mr. Reed was super helpful and easy. He grades on a curve so your pretty much guaranteed to pass.
I took stats with him and it was horrible! whenever i had a question, he would never answer it, he never handed anything back,he would always go off topic, he sucked at teaching, it took him forever to change anything in the gradebook, very disorganized/unstructured and made us do pointless projects. He cant teach to save his life
good instructor!
Took for online math 108. easy deadlines, easy tests if you do the homework. Very friendly. The math projects sounded dumb at first, but actually made the class less monotonous.
Very Helpful and Funny ;) I wish I could have him like Teacher for all my Classes
I've had better. He is quiet the talker...he waould talk and talk and talk and in the last 15 min of class teach us what we were suppose to learn in an hour. He's a nice guy but as for a professor I'll pass.
Wonderful teacher. He is so understanding and willing to work with you. I would take him again.
GREAT!!! :)
Mr. Reed explains the math so that it is easy to understand. Class participation helps the learning environment.
Mr. Reed is not as funny as he thinks he is but he is a good teacher. The class is a good class of students who want to learn.
Mr.Reed is very talkive and loves to tell jokes which 95 percent of the time aren't funny. At first he was pretty annoying but he's really nice. He's really easy as long as you do the work you'll be fine.
It was my first online course. I was scared, but Mr. Reed made it easy! He is always willing to answer questions and help you understand the material. He's also patient with a student who emails too much (me). Highly recommend. Good quality and exams aren't too hard if you prepare.
Do NOT take this class online. He gave us no notes, tutorials, power-points, or anything that can be called "teaching". This was no different than buying a book, and learning on my own. Most of the class dropped, and those of us who stayed are facing failure. The "average" grade per blackboard tells us the handful of us left will probably fail.
Summer math online is extremely fast paced- LOTS of homework! Don't think you're taking the easy way out. You really are your own teacher (although website animations and videos can be very helpful). Mr. Reed is really understanding when it comes to grading. Exams can be difficult and count towards 65% of your grade, but often have a huge curve.
Mr. Reed's class ONLINE is very much self guided and self taught, which makes it very challenging and time consuming. If you have no prior programming experience, this class will be difficult, but not impossible. Mr. Reed was not very good at responding to e-mails promptly, and doesn't grade assignments quickly, but he is very helpful when he does.
I took this class with Mr. Reed online. It is very much a self-taught class. There are no notes or anything, just you and the textbook. The assignments are right out of the textbook. This class will be a challenge if you have no prior programming experience. Mr. Reed was not very good at responding to emails or grading assignments quickly.
I am a math major and I obviously love math. I took College Algebra with him last semester and I think he is honestly one of the worst teachers at CLC. He is not very good at teaching and sometimes he couldn't solve some problems. I pretty much had to teach the class to myself, so do yourself a favor and take someone else!
pretty good teacher. very helpful and great at teaching and driving points home.
Class was easy. Mr. Reed was a very nice teacher and cracked a lot of jokes(none of which were funny at all) but he's cool. He didn't require attendence but he had in class labs that worth a small percent of your grade. His tests were straight forward and pretty simple. I would recommend Mr. Reed to any student who wants to learn java.
Scott is a very nice fellow, and knows a lot about Java. Sadly, I did not find the lectures or the labs to be very helpful to learn this material. My failing grade in MCS-142 was all I needed to determine that computer science is not a good subject to major in, even if I want to keep learning Java on my own. Exams are open book, but not easy.
"Good algebra morning!" Mr. Reed is fabulous! Always upbeat and positive. Very clear in class. Always helpful. Algebra is so easy with him!
First let me congratulate you on doing something no teacher has been able to do before. I have had several algebra teachers and in each class I either fell asleep or did my best to simply loose myself in other thoughts. You however make a subject that for me seemed like a plague actually interesting and a class engaging.
As a math teacher, he seems to be fine. As a computer science teacher, not so much. He doesn't seem to know very much about coding in Java. He may know all these technical terms and definitions, but he lacks the ability to code intuitively or be able to explain things well. I took MCS 141 and 142. Both have taught me nothing useful at all.
I had Mr. Reed for mcs141 and mcs142. I transferred to NIU and felt prepared for CS classes. I have used a lot of the CS stuff so far, like data structures. Mr. Reed did great for my NIU transfer.
He's funny when it comes to math. He's willing to help you out if your stuck on a problem
He's very easy and friendly :). His class is easy and trust me he'll help you out.
Makes class interesting. Helps when a student asks during or after class. Will go over previous day assignment if anyone has a question on something, but still manages to maintain daily schedule.
This guy is literally the worst teacher I have ever had!!! He spends the whole class time rambling about random stuff not pertaining to class, then will write codes on the board and not explain anything about them. His tests are quite challenging and long. Hopefully you know programming beforehand or else good luck!!He is so terrible at teaching
Half in class, half online. I had no idea what he was talking about all of this class. Really sweet man but definitely is not a stats teacher. Keep up on homework. One project, 4 tests, no midterm, final. did all of my work in the tutoring center; really helpful, but still a hard class. Willing to make his course schedule flexible. lots group work
Professor Reed is a great teacher if you are willing to pay attention and learn in class. His Stats class that was half in class and half online was easy, I did not like the concept but it worked out well. He cracks some funny jokes as well.
In all honestly this is the worst professor I've ever had. He would go on a tangent or trying to explain the homework that he expected us to teach ourselves. If he taught us what we were suppose to learn then maybe we could do the homework. He was also rude to the students. I ended up having to drop the class.
His online class is awesome (if know what you are doing). Class is best fit for students that are familiar with the criteria. However, if you dont know what you doing, take this class on campus. If you don't know what you are doing and still choose to take the class expect a lot of reading, in this case it would be smart to take it on campus.
Worst class ever! Mr. Reed is a nice guy, but does not fit well with teaching. Talks too much about everything EXCEPT stats. It was hard to focus because he would talk too much or not get the right answer (you're the teacher but don't get the right answer? Okay...). Eventually dropped the class because it was not worth it!
Very nice man, but teaching statistics is not what he should be doing. Your grade mainly depends on your test scores which are 65% of your grade. During his lectures he talks about everything other than what we need to learn. My class was 1/2 online, 1/2 in class. Don't rely on him to teach you, you'll have to learn on your own
He is a very good teacher! he assigns daily homework and will go over everything and anything you ask. He's also hilarious. Makes stats fun and doable with his teaching. As long as you do homework you will pass the tests.
I loved him. would def take him again.
Nice guy, not a good teacher. Spent much of class debating the dedicated tutor on how to do problems. Talked about the old days quite a bit, and confused himself when explaining homework. Book is required, but many times the wrong answers were in it, and not an easy read. you will have to teach yourself.
Mr. Reed keeps it real with you if you keep it real with him, I had a lot of questions and he was willing to see me during office hours to talk about them. He's easy to talk too and fair. I took his class online but needed to go in to school a lot to get extra help and better understanding. Personally I would recommend a face to face class.
I took Mr. Reed's 102 online. He is responds very quickly to questions and gives clear and helpful answers. If each chapter's homework is done on time, you are given the option to do more practice for extra credit. As long as you keep up with the work, an A or B is easy to earn.
Mr. Reed is a great teacher! He is very easy going. You will always have homework but it helps with the quizzes and tests. I would definitely take him again.
He's a great teacher! TAKE HIS CLASS. YOULL LOVE HIM!
This professor is VERY helpful in and out of class. There is homework almost every night but sometimes there is no homework. You have to pay attention or you won't know what to do.
Literally the most terrible professor I have ever had. I had to make him teach us a unit he never mentioned or taught but then decided to put on an online test. He spends 70% of our class talking about nothing important and teaches a barley legitimate lesson. Do not recommend him whatsoever.
Highly recommend. Explains the material in easily understand ways, provides opportunities for extra credit, good class learning community.
Absolutely ridiculous. I've asked him for assistance several times when I didn't understand a topic or specific question. He'll only tell you to look in the book or email him or have your classmates answer the questions instead. Even if there is at least 15 minutes left of class and all he's doing is rambling like normal, he will not help you.
I'm a little surprised there are many positive reviews. He is very nice but he doesn't know how to teach. Chapters are assigned to read which is fine, but he doesn't follow up with effectively teaching the chapters. Very unorganized & lecture is very hard to follow bc he will go on tangents about unrelated topics. Very upset I'm paying for this.
Do not take his class. He does have good intentions but is a terrible terrible professor. He talks about nothing important and his humor is terrible. When he does lecture it is a complete mess and messes up all the time. Does not explain well and the class has to remind him about everything. Uses past material and doesn't even update the date.
It is a stats class and very calculator heavy. You need it to do mean and standard deviation, i.e. 1varStat. And for hypothesis tests to calculate the p-value. And also for linear regression, LinReg.
Mr. Reed is a good guy, but not the best professor. For someone who has taken stats in high school I had an advantage, but I still struggled to understand what he was teaching. He would change the subject and tell stories when teaching. Was good at asking questions and going over homework. Overall very disorganized and made it hard to sit through.
Wonderful thank you! I will be doing CS at UIS this upcoming spring :D
I wanted to take the time to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed your class and liked the way you kept it very lighthearted and interesting as well. It is not too often you have a professor that keeps class fun and you can also learn a ton. I learned a lot! Thank you,
If you want to meet in person then he was available to discuss homework and grade. Thank you for all your works and appreciate it!
Very accommodating the distance. I'm registering for 4 CS classes at UIS next semester. I do all the work and exams in the exact same way I would if I was in f2f class. I will leave a good reputation for CLC and the CS program.
Tough grader.
The PowerPoints provided for teaching during the semester and for the time and effort provided were helpful. I consider to have learned much during this summer semester.
heads up about the time commitment. Although I am involved in some extracurriculars, I think it is something that you will spend time in class, especially considering the fact that you write programs!
Attendance is only mandatory in the scenes that this is the time to do your labs. If you are present for the lab you will most likely get a 100%. He walks the class through the lab because every lab is crustal to understand as they are exactly what's on the test. As long as you are willing to put in the work, you should see success in Reed's class.
spends most of class time trying to figure out how to teach online. he often tells off topic stories and makes jokes that only he laughs at. he spends a lot of time talking about how the slideshow was made, rather than explaining how to solve the problems. he reads off the slides rather than visually showing how to solve a problem.
I am preparing for the final as we speak and I want to do as good as possible! It was great teaching for a great semester amidst all the chaos of 2020.
Mr. Reed was super nice! I struggle with math so taking this class online was challenging. It occasionally took him awhile to grade things, which was sometimes frustrating. I had a 79.6 after the final and when I asked if I could do anything, he said he was going to round up, and was extremely nice in all conversations.
This professor is nice and somewhat funny with his computer science jokes regarding mountain dew in my opinion you'll get by if you put effort to go tutoring every single time. since his way of explaining java was very confusing and at best his way of teaching was all over the place but I was fed up of attending class clueless from start to end.
Mr. Reed is the worst professor I've ever had. He doesn't have a copy of the book. not timely with responding to emails, if he responds at all. first half of class is spent with him rambling about how "fussy" canvas is. lectures do not make sense, doesn't answer questions. ignore him & teach yourself for a better grade. He makes learning harder.
Rambles on about random stuff, his grading sucks. Teach yourself bc he just reads off slides and does not answer your questions well. Barley replies to emails. He gives no extra credit but instead offers volunteer points which help your grade more than hw does.
Talks a lot about canvas and the issues it holds. However he was always willing to help, offers office hours and extra time when needed. Lectures and notes were a bit of a drag but definitely passable.
Super nice guy. Definitely does his best to teach the material to you the best as he can, however he does not always do the best job. I suggest showing up to his office hours so that he can explain the material better. Entire grade is pretty dependent on how you do on the quizzes, no tests. Gets carried away from time to time talking about canvas.
Mr Reed seems like a kind soul. But when it comes to teaching he basically read off of power points with answers in them - there was no teaching going on. When questions were asked he seemed to beat around the bush because he didn't know the answer or just couldn't explain how to solve it. I could've learned better with a different teacher.
He struggles with the material he teaches. Many homework questions and test questions had incorrect answer options and students had to correct him quite a lot. Very monotone voice and reads directly from slides. Beware of popup assignments/quizzes in his class, it's how he takes attendance.
I don't recommend anyone take a class with Professor Reed. He gets stuck on problems and has to be corrected by students during lessons. Reads answers off pre-made power points and doesn't actually teach. I basically paid money to teach myself stats, he's a horrible online teacher. He also constantly accuses of cheating if you do well on a test.
I really enjoyed statistics a lot more than I thought hahah may be in my next life I will indeed be a math major :)
I saw that final grades are in because I took my final yesterday. It was a great class. I was appreciative of him letting me accelerate the first half of the class to fit my summer schedule. I really feel like I have a solid grasp of statistics now and will enter business school (If I get in....) with a good, refreshed foundation.
I think spending a bit more time on arrays would be a good idea! I think one way to have good practice with arrays is building a project that focuses on implementing various sorting algorithms (like binary search and sequential search, which were discussed in class).
I like professor Reed, but, if you are genuinely interested in learning java, I would not recommend him. He gives lots of extra credit opportunity. There's just one thing, he does not stop talking during lectures. The whole class just tuned out what he was saying two weeks in. Was hard to pay attention to lectures because of this, but I managed.
Professor Reed is kind, not a harsh grader and if you put in the work you can get an A, but you have to attend class to do the labs and his lectures are very boring. He spends 80% of the time talking about things other than the actual material. He also has SEVERAL mistakes in his quizzes/exams which WILL jeopardize your grade if you don't speak up.
The only point of attending his Comp-Sci class is the labs worth 15%, besides that the lectures are abysmally taught. He is incessantly off topic about everything and subjects you to the exact same prior rants. His tests are poorly put together and the "answers" are often incorrect. I don't say this lightly, he is the worst teacher I've ever had.
Gives extra credit if impressed by quality of work. took his online class so can't say much about him personally. Grading is pretty clear, the tests reflect assignments he gives. If something is wrong with assignments speak up and you'll be okay. I advise looking for resources outside of what Mr.Reed provides to ensure you get a good grade though.
Inspirational teaching. Passion for the course and dedication to students. He made every class engaging and memorable. One of the best teachers I will forever remember. Jack
Professor is very understanding and patient. Easiest class ever. Although he did take quite a long time to grade assignments. He redeems himself by giving extra credit when you volunteer during lectures. He is still the best professor for comp sci.
Professor Reed can be chatty, but his lectures are worth attending to break down the concepts. The class is manageable with the free textbook and extra credit. unstuck study was a lifesaver for practice problems alongside other study aids.
Professor Reed is very spontaneous and disorganized with his teachings, often messing problems up and mumbling his way slowly through mistakes and even expecting students to correct his own work. Half of the classes he just spends rambling on about A.I. and other unrelated topics, especially politics. Just learn from the textbook, not in person.
Besides the crazy circumstances I'm in, it was a great semester. Professor Reed is always helping and answering my questions when I needed help. It was a great semester!
Professor Reed is very nice and the labs/homework are not harsh, but he takes a LONG time grading assignments. He grades exams, but when it comes to homework he will not grade it until the end of the semester.
Old fashioned; rewards professionalism & doesn't navigate technology the best. Reasonably flexible & lenient. Generous with extra credit. I wasn't in the top 25% for online tests, but scored the highest (90%) while >50% of students failed the final (>60% on final to pass) — if you cheese tests with AI, study before the final. Timely enough grading.
Professor Reed is a very lenient grader. You get extra points for just volunteering the class. If you need an easy A then take him but you won't learn alot independatly as he solves the coding with the class. He may yap alot but he is a nice guy who might take a while to grade your assignments.
