I am taking 213 with Scott this semester and he gives you every oppurtunity to exceed. He puts his notes on D2L before class so you can follow along and fill in notes as needed. His tests are fair and posts youtube videos covering virtually any question you'll see on a midterm.
Scott is awesome! Don't listen to these fools saying he is a joke and unclear and brutal to his students. He makes lectures engaging and knows his stuff. Likes to crack jokes. Course is hard, but go to class and keep up with notes, study hard and you will be fine! Best stats prof I have had at U of C.
Gets angry at students very easily. he has a temper problem.
Generally grumpy guy, will be nice at times but is most annoyed or angry he is bipolar.
You got to ask him question when he is in a good mood otherwise be prepared to get yelled at.
Difficult class, test and quizzes are more or less similar in difficulty. Scott is very helpful and is willing to accommodate reasonable requests. His online proofs are very helpful. His lectures are fairly engaging but he sometimes gets lost in the material. You need the textbook to do well but there are pdfs online.
Love him. He make statistic really easy in class. Make sure you come to class or you would get lost easily.
1. He does not have a phd, he only got a non-thesis based master's. 2. He made an average of two mistakes per class. 3. His tests were designed to test stat, english and sports terminologies. 4. Later in the semester, he skipped quite a few questions and asked students to go watch his youtube videos. 5. Cancelled quite a few office hours.
Scott Robison was one of the best professors I have had. He did absolutely everything he could to help us succeed. The class was very difficult, but he somehow still made it enjoyable. He is also very approachable and funny. I would definitely take another class with him.
Scott is very reasonable and tries his best to help students and be there for them, he is the only prof I have ever had to have office hours 5 days a week, he posts videos of nearly every example and proof done in class. His tests aren't easy and sometimes wordy but unlike other Stats profs is willing to curve. Wished he taught 323. 321 is hard!
I thought Robison was a great prof, the best i've had. The tests are hard, but it prepares you well for the final exam. The videos he posts for examples in his notes are VERY helpful and he encourages you to see him if you need help. Makes the lectures interesting and uses funny examples to help you remember things. Wont be forgetting the P-value!
Great Professor. He was incredibly helpful in a class that is pretty challenging. Brings an upbeat style to his teaching and is always available if you need any help. Tough tests but that is the nature of the class
Scott explains the material really well and makes it seem easy. Gives multiple ways to tackle questions. However the questions on the assignments are very hard and on the tests are even harder. Feels like he wants to see deep understanding of stuff that wasn't even covered in class. He does curve the grades to make it fair, though.
take stats with Robison! This is a hard course but Scott provided all the tools to do well if you're willing to put in work. His youtube videos are SO helpful and he has one for virtually every type of question. helpful in office hours and has a bunch of them. If you review everything his midterms were fair and they prepare you for the killer final
Ignore the haters. If you are taking Stats, take it with Scott. His biggest asset compared to other stats profs is the ability to grasp the English Language. Great guy, would definitely learn from again.
Hey everyone who is mandatory to take Stat. My friend I had to take Stat 213 for Fall 2015. He took with Stalard and I with Robinson. I must say he disappointed so bad. Scott gave us many chances along the course. Also he had 5 hours of office hours, which he only had to have one. Also very helpful one to one too. I don't regret any single second
Scott is a pretty good in his lectures, however I would avoid seeing him in office hours. He can be very rude and seems to be in a bad mood a lot of the time and you may leave feeling worse about the material than you did going in. Not very helpful whatsoever.
Scott is an amazing professor. I don't understand how some people say he is unapproachable or rude to students! I saw him in office hours multiple times and you can tell he genuinely cares for his students' success. Not an easy class, but if you put the work in you will definitely see positive results. Would recommend taking his class
Scott is a great professor! He is approachable &I am taking Stat217 with him specifically again because of his teaching methods in Stat213. The way he conducts his lectures helped w/ my learning &he genuinely cares about how his students do. He gives chances to us students which is pretty considerate!Definitely recommend officehours if you're stuck
Scott definitely has his ups and downs as a prof. While he makes the material fairly clear during lectures, he also comes off as rude towards students and a lot of the time he seemed to be in a bad mood. You have to go to class and do all of the examples he gives out. Assignments are challenging at times, so are the midterms, so get ready to study.
If you want to do well, take it with a different professor. It's not that he is a bad prof, it's just that his class is really hard, harder than other stats 213 profs.
He was very good in lectures. Notes are very detailed with lots of examples which all have videos with them. Gave us opportunities for bonus marks on midterms. very good at merging english and stats.
Scott's genuinely cares about his students and is willing to help them out. He has LOTS of videos on example problems. One thing i didn't like is how this course uses minitab throughout the semester but on the final you can't use minitab, which i really don't understand why since students are grown so accustom to it. 50 MINS TO WRITE ALL TESTS!!!
Not the worst prof to have for statistics 213 or 217, but expect tough assignments and midterms. Scott is fair with his tests by giving opportunities to gain a small percentage of what you lose on tests back with bonus assignments.
Scott is an amazing prof. While his tests are hard, he does prepare you for what's about to come for the finals. He gives you all the materials you need anyways for all the assignments and the midterms, not to mention he's very fair with grades. Definitely recommend going to his office hours for clarity. Also, he's very passionate about Stats.
I came into this class thinking I was going to hate it, however it ended up being one of my favourite classes! I'm horrible at math but Scott gives tons of examples and is a really fair marker. He is an amazing prof & is super passionate about what he does. He genuinely wants his students to do well. So as long as you try, you'll do great!
Although this class requires a lot of work, Scott makes it as easy as he can. He gives tons of examples & is probably the most reasonable prof I have ever had. He wants his students to succeed. He is really funny & his lectures go by fairly quickly. Fair amount of homework but if you try, you will get a good grade.
He posts all of his notes online and goes through a lot of examples in class. He spends a lot of time showing how to do the calculations using software which was nice as we got the computer for the midterms and final. His tests can be a bit difficult but gives a very generous curve.
I'm not really sure why there's so manuy bad comments about him. Maybe he's changed, but I never saw him lash out or be rude to anyone in class. He explains very well and is a nice prof. Course is really hard though, and the main problem is that Scott teaches mostly minitab, but final has no minitab which sucks.
Scotty is a good prof and tries his best to make sure his students learn the material. Course is difficult but his explanations make it better but a downside is that his midterms are that much more difficult. He removed us from his D2L an hour before the test began which sucks cause you dont find out what we got on final until Myuofc is uploaded
I took Scott's class as a 'science' option. I was nervous going into it since math isn't my forte, but Scott's YouTube videos and his clear passion for statistics made this class a pleasure to take. He gives many opportunities for extra credit, which is nice since his tests are pretty difficult, and somehow I ended the class with B+!
Stats was the class I was most scared about. Took 213 and 217 with Scott and they were my two highest classes. Great prof, YouTube videos are amazing, especially in 213. Very helpful in office hours, always has a line out his door. Downfall is all his tests focus on minitab, try to get your mark as high as possible before the final with no minitab.
Scott's lectures were pretty good and his ability to teach the material was also quite good. He could be a little condescending at times and was even rude during his office hours. It often felt like you were wasting his time if you went to see him outside of class.
Scott is a real gem. He tries his best to make you understand the material. He was really nice if you asked him questions, as long as his mood was great. His tests are not hard but they can be surprising. Midterms and Assignments are easy as long as you watch his videos (Long but SUPER USEFUL + hints). Come to class! Final is hard, not his fault.
Scott is the best teacher for getting through introductory stats (213/217). His passion for the subject reflects in his teaching, and he instills a passion in students that's rare to find with most other profs. Make use of his office hours, he will always go to any extent to make sure you learn a concept.
He's alright
Scott cares a lot about his students and wants you to do well. Make sure that you put in effort before asking how to do questions though, and go to office hours instead of trying to ask questions before/after class. If he's taking time out of his day to do an extended office hour for midterm/final review... GO!
I suck at math but Scott made it possible for me to do well in his class. He genuinely cares about the success of his students. He goes through tons of examples in class, gives homework that helps for the exams and is clear on what he expects on the exams. The exams are not easy but if you do the homework, you will do well. He is also very funny!
The good reviews are all written by himself.
Scott Robison (not to be confused with Scott Robinson) is a saint of a prof! His lectures are entertaining and informative! He understands the difficulty of the course and is willing to work and help the students. I'm lucky to have had him for 2 of my courses so far. 10/10!
Good prof. The only reservation I have is rounding and emphasis for 4-decimal place rounding. Because of this poor answer input system many capable students are losing marks because of discrepancy between calculator calibration. I am completely disgusted and appalled the university approved 4-decimal places for answers. it should be 3 AT MOST!
Quality guy that seems to care about each student specifically. His marking is harsh but he is always willing to hear your side and admit if he makes a mistake.
Wanted to give him a good rating but I can't. He really has no interest in helping students. Doesn't respond to emails on purpose.
Legend
Astounding professor, he has videos posted online which supplement his lectures and help out students anywhere/anytime.
Scott is a great professor. His grading is very fair. During lectures he does an excellent job at explaining difficult concepts. I would recommend him to anyone.
Not very good. Many questions on the test were very vague and hard to interpret. The second half of the course is much easier as it's mostly doing integrals and proofs. When asked questions in class he wouldn't give a clear answer and would get confused solving basic integrals. Definitely take it with someone else if possible.
Great Prof! Scott teaches this course knowing that you're not a math major. His lectures are well organised and his notes are solid with plenty examples. He almost has videos on all of his notes and in these videos, he goes through the examples and his notes. He is very fair and tries very hard to teach the content thoroughly. Would recommend
Scott is great at what he does. Although this is a very tough class, he definitely sets up the people who put in the effort to succeed. The way he runs his class is very organized and efficient. He's very clear about what his expectations are, is super approachable, and genuinely cares about his students.
He made the transition from High school to university a little bit easier. Although I was assigned in JingJing's lectures, she was terrible and I just went to Scott's. He goes a little fast so keep up! For stats, he's a real gem. Even if you don't get what he's saying in class, he has YouTube videos for you to watch to really understand the concept
Beauty
Seemingly nice at first. But he became very rude and unapproachable during the semester. He purposely ignores emails. His class structure is horrid. The way you take notes in class isn't really suitable for a math-based course. While he does do examples in class, 50% of the time they were pre-done or vague and inexplicable.
Robison is one of the best profs I've had so far. He is very respectful of students. He posts videos on the content which is really helpful. Towards the end of the semester he posted filled in notes. Take notes in class, he does examples that are really helpful.
Robison says that the people on here who rate him either love or hate him, I was in the middle. He's one of the better stats profs but makes u print out a million pages of notes. Also the two midterms are all on minitab and the final is by hand so you have to re learn it all by hand. But overall I do think Robison is a good prof, I'd take him again
Very knowledgable and very helpful. Go to class, do not skip or else you will be very lost for the rest of the semester. Midterms were hard, wish that we were taught how to do problems more by hand then on minitab, which we weren't allowed to use on the final. Wish labs were easier and there was more time to go over the material that was covered.
His final is extremely hard and I found it stupid that he teaches the whole course with minitab. You do NOT learn anything by having the computer do it for you and will struggle in the last week to learn everything by hand. You wont be able to learn throughout as his quizzes require the use of minitab. Also his class is too hard for non math majors
Scott's a really great prof. Explains the matter in a very creative way and is thorough. Can rush through the matter at times but would definitely slow down a bit to help you understand. Is very easily accessible during office hours and it is advisable to attend those at times . Is always ready to listen to you and give you feedbacks to do well.
i very like him, i will take his course again
Scott is a good choice. Better for people who have a strong math background, as he goes through material fairly fast. Assignments were very time consuming, at least for me. Labs are basically a pass or fail, they're usually only out of a few points. It's annoying that we learn to use software all year and then don't get to use it for the final.
Great teacher! Knows what he's doing
Awesome proof would definatly recommend, has amazing helpful videos online for all the lectures.
The real MVP. His notes are amazing, and he gives students multiple chances before the finals to improve their marks. If you didn't understand something in the lecture, he'll post a youtube video just in case. Best prof out there.
It did bug me that he would quickly write notes and I wasn't the fastest writer, so once I looked up to try to write more, he had already flipped the page. It's understandable though, he had a lot of material to cover. Overall he's a focused helps clarify any questions students may have for assignments and goes over what's on the Midterm.
From the very beginning I knew Scott was an excellent, professor, but it wasn't until I had a professor from hell in 217 where I truly appreciated Scott's teaching abilities. He is thorough, explains material so clearly, and genuinely cares about the well-being of his students. By far my favourite prof from my university experience thus far.
Scott is honestly just a great person and prof. He's engaging and makes class fun to go to, and is always willing to go the extra mile if you see him for help outside of class. He's extremely clear on what is going to be on the midterms as well, and the videos and note booklets he posts on d2l are extremely helpful resources. Take Scott if you can!
Scott is so passionate about stats, it makes the class worth coming to. He is funny, excellent at explaining concepts, and easily approachable. Easily one of, if not the best professor for STAT 217.
Scott creates useful practices tests before tests which are very helpful. He seems to knows what hes talking about but lectures become quite unorganized along with the notes. Unfortunately he doesn't like Tim Hourtons and booked a test on Bermuda Shorts Day late in the day so be prepared if you sign up for his class.
THE GOAT. Had him for 213, and now 217. His passion for stats is infectious and makes the lectures more interesting. Hopefully I have more lectures with him in the future.
He gives you solved notes which is nice. However, he presents those solved notes in class as his lectures instead of walking through each problem by hand which made it harder to understand the material. Assignments are tricky and lots of work. The tests were fair.
Had Scott for 213 and 217. He's a great prof who's really enthusiastic about stats and his lectures are really clear and concise. He's really good at explaining concepts in a simplified way so everyone can easily understand. I really enjoyed his class overall. Definitely take stats with Scott if possible.
Scott's a great prof. Honestly STATS classes aren't my forte and he's very good at explaining and providing examples and how to do them. He's also funny and passionate about the class which makes it more enjoyable. Only thing is he teaches a lot using Minitab which is great for the midterms but not at all for the final; so don't get used to that.
Scott has his quirks but he's an A+ character who's very genuine in all that he does. A family man. Midterms are so easy, all very similar to his practice tests. Final was easy this year as well... I did a previous final from a year that Stallard wrote it and it was 10x harder than Scott's. Thank god I took Stat 217 at the right time!
Would recommend for stats, puts up videos on d2l and gives videos of class material. He is also easy to understand.
this guy does try to make every effort to give himself good ratings here.
This is here to fail you and is rude. He just enjoys to fail and in fact he said "next semester you will get a prof where you have memorized the formula but I give you a formula", he already planned to fail us. I am surprised that he is still teaching.
Good Professor and honest about the difficulty of the course
Scotts lectures are amazing. He explains everything well, and his assignments are not too difficult. However, midterms are nothing like the practice questions. MUCH HARDER. I went into the midterm feeling confident until I took a look at it and everything was confusing.
He really makes the effort for students to understand the material with his youtube videos. However, his lecture style and his quizzes & exams are definitely not good for students not pursuing actuarial sciences or statistics. He is confrontational and a bit rude. It is also difficult to contact him as he ignores emails. Take with Stallard.
Hes the biggest babe of first year business. Certified Beauty
Scott is great, his teaching style is easy to understand. As long as there is effort put in on your behalf, this class will come fairly easy. Do the materials assigned and the tests will be an easy pass. Scott does what he can to set you up for success, highly recommended.
Scott is very understandable and his lectures are very helpful. The quizzes and assignments are totally manageable. Definitely recommend him as a prof
Scott is a really great prof, and cares a lot about his students. His notes are clear to understand and the tests and assignments aren't hard! His videos are super helpful as well!
Scott has been one of my favourite profs so far. His notes are super helpful and he actually makes Stats understandable. If you put in some effort into the class you'll do fine.
Scott is a really good prof, you can tell that he cares about his students and actually takes time to make videos on d2L for extra help. He is passionate about his job which shows while he is teaching. He breaks things down by providing memorable examples in class. He actually makes stats understandable and I do not completely hate his class!
he explains stats very clearly and understands what would be hard/ confusing to the students. he posts videos on D2L, which are so helpful. He tends to cover many materials at a class sometimes, but I can tell that he cares about the student. As long as you put your effort, you have enough resources to learn well.
Despite the difficulty of the course Scott can make the lesson very enjoyable. Mornings aren't too bad with his jokes and stories, and he made Stats less boring than it should be. Of course tests are still difficult and his videos are helpful but his teaching style can be effective, if not usually. Just be sure to study still.
If you have to take stats, take it with him. His jokes are great and he posts helpful videos on d2l. The course is difficult, but he tries his best to help you understand the material
- Good lecture notes - posts informative videos - you can find questions related to your weekly assignments on his youtube channel -emphasize a lot on minitab but does not allow students to use it during tests -RARELY replies to e-mails -Condescending/ rude when speaking to him in a one on one situation -"Go talk to the TA not me"
I wouldn't want to take stats with anyone besides Scott. He goes out of his way to provide great notes you can print off before class and posts the solutions to these notes on D2L. His exams are exactly like his assignments and quizzes. Show up to class and to your labs and it's easy to do well.
Try to avoid Scott - Does not explain notes in lectures and expects you to self-learn - His notes are helpful, but you rely heavily on only the notes - Known for taking grades off assignments/midterms just for asking him questions about it - Not approachable, not understanding, rude - Does not explain how to use R code clearly
Seems to me as though Scott may be writing his own reviews. I havent found a single person who has previously taken a course with him that likes him as a prof. The previous negative reviews have received the most likes as well.
do you ever wonder why a lot of people fail the the final? It's probably because the prof keeps using Minitab well past the 2nd midterm even though the final is written all by hand, leaving you to learn the material on your own from the textbook. Scott is also quite rude when responding to your emails and it's clear that he does the absolute min.
funny and a good prof
Here's the thing about STAT213, the reason why Scott is an instructor is because the other instructors (who actually have a PhD) have very thick accents which makes understanding a confusing course more confusing. He DOES NOT reply to emails and comes across as money hungry. But unfortunately, he's the best of the worst...
Scott taught me a lot about stats, especially the importance of a big p-value. Would take his class again.
scott was great. he actually made me challenge yet enjoy stats. He's a good lecturer, chill and laid back.
Many people dislike statistics because they find the concepts difficult to grasp. Professor Robison is highly skilled at communicating statistical concepts, and his teaching style is far better than other statistics professors. His mock final exam was excellent preparation for the real final exam, and the course isn't too difficult if you try hard.
His teaching is pretty poor. He got behind the class schedule and started to just blaze through topics with little to no clarity. I would say if you are going to take STATS 321 definitely go to Jim. I went to Jim's lectures instead because Scott was so terrible. Really helped me out in the end.
really good professor. Makes the classes interesting. Stats isnt an easy class so you do need to attend but if you show up you'll be fine!
When I tried to see him about a midterm mark he was very condescending and belittled me. Argued that he could take off additional marks because I got other questions relating to the concept wrong, saying I shouldnt get marks for a lucky guess regardless if it was correct and used that as a reason not to give me the marks argued. Are you serious?
The class itself was fairly hard, but he tought it well. Uses a more concept and hands on teaching method as in he does questions during lecture in order to explain methods, which for me i like. Speaks clear english and is very enthusiastic as well.
I think he was a good lecturer. He explains stats clearly, so I don't think I had any troubles understanding the professor even though English is my second language. In fact, I made sure I attended all the classes because I knew that I would miss a lot even if I miss only one class. He is strict yet you do have all the materials to learn well
Scott is genuinely pretty passionate about the subject he teaches and it comes across as such in his lectures. As long as you do the homework and pay attention in lectures you are pretty much guaranteed a good mark. The final was pretty much just given since a practice final was uploaded and was basically the exact same.
Scott is an amazing professor. He redeemed my interest and faith in professors and this course. He does give a lot of assignments and its imperative that you do them by yourself. He is an easy grader but you need to show your understanding. The final was not easy because it was more multiple choices. I hope University Of Calgary doesn't loose him.
Tests were fair, but he crammed in too much in too little time. My main complaint was that towards midterm, he stopped going through problems step-by-step and would just project the notes, point, and talk to get through the material more quickly - not helpful for comprehension. Overall good instructor.
Legend prof, prepares you well for final. All assignments, midterms, and quizzes are fair.
I had Scott for 213 and decided to take 217 with him. His lectures are engaging and he covers exactly what you need to know in a way that everyone can understand. Midterms for 213 were pretty tough but he doesn't put any unfair material on them. Very easy to get ahold of in office hours or by email. 100% the best stats prof at u of c
i personally do not like his lecture style and feel he spends a good chunk of class cracking bad jokes, not the worst but definitly not the best!
His lectures are very very organized and he provides lots of examples during his lectures which I found them helpful.
Students who give this prof a low rating must have learning disabilities. Robinson's lectures are great and easy to follow and he posts videos online which go over them and numerous questions. Best professor at University.
Notes are pretty straightforward but the exams are made to take almost every single minute given to you, to the point of sometimes not finishing. Grades are based on only exams. Quite pessimistic about how well people can do in the class. The final was too long and all exams were written with no multiple choice.
Scotts lectures are great his notes are great he is accessible after the class . The course by itself its not that hard exams are also not hard but Scott makes them super tricky I would say the wording of the exam is confusing.
Scott is great, he challenges you and makes you really work for your marks in his courses, which I feel like sets you up for success in other courses as well. His exams are pretty tricky and the wording can sometimes catch people off guard. So be on guard ! His lectures and notes are very well done, Highly recommended taking Scott for 213 and 217.
His lectures are great and the notes are very well organized. But his exams are tricky even though the concept of the course is not that hard .
Scott's lectures are organized and to the point. He gives lots of examples for each concept, also posts youtube videos of him going over extra examples. First part of the course was on perms and combs which was not my forte. His tests are fair, just study the assignments and examples. He curved both of our midterms, so definitely a reasonable prof
Good guy with good intentions, sometimes he's a little lost, but he makes good notes
Robison is a good teacher but he'll snake you hard on exams and assignments. If he's reading this comment out loud to you right now know that if he disagrees he's lying. The guy gave us only two attempts on our final assignment and literally we were covering the hardest topic of the semester. The dude's a good teacher but he pissed a lot of us off.
His exams will not be the same as class material.
Scott is quite easy to learn from. It's extremely helpful that he provides note packages for all of his lectures. I felt prepared for the midterms just by doing the assignments and weekly quizzes. He'll give you tons of practice material so don't let it go to waste; do all of the questions in each booklet and complete all the practice exams.
Words cannot describe how great a professor this man was throughout both Stat 213 and Stat 217. His extensive videos on his YouTube channel coupled with the incredibly insightful statistical knowledge he employed in lectures made his classes a gem. He's not for everybody, as he's standoffish and unfriendly in his office, but he's a fantastic prof.
His lecture sections were amazing, as the notes and material were clearly explained well. Even though the final exam does not have minitab, he prepares you well for the final exam. If you study and attend lectures with the printed notes, you will do awesome in the class!
Excellent lecturer with equally amazing notes. Study his notes carefully and you won't need the textbook. Thing is, the course is hard. Just like in 213, you need to know how to do calculations by hand for the final. Scott does examples by hand and through Minitab so make sure you pay attention AND GO TO CLASS. Can't stress that enough, attend!
He speeds through some of the material on minitab sometimes which is fine until you get to the final and dont have access to minitab. Super friendly guy who knows what hes teaching and teaches it well. Class is difficult but thats to be expected. Would definitely take another class with scott.
Scott gets a lot of negative feedback but I thought he was great when I had him for STAT 213. His lecture notes were great and following along during lectures really helped solidify concepts. He's a nice prof and is really enthusiastic and educated about the subject matter. Didn't need the textbook at all, just make sure you understand the notes
Loved the way he taught in class. Was effectively, clear and concise. Took his lectures for stat 213 and 217 and he was great for both! Very friendly and accessible in class and outside of class. All examinations are fair and he prepares all his students well for them. Do not buy the textbook, it is a waste of money with all the in class practice.
I had Scott for both 213/217 and he was amazing! He gets straight to the point in lectures, shows you every step for problems both by hand and by minitab. His exams are also quite fair w/ the material he teaches. Lectures are entertaining (even though it's stats) but he's so enthusiastic 'bout it. If you have Scott, you don't need the textbook.
Tests are way too long and arent anything like the assignments
Scot is a poor lecturer. He. Makes it sound like he wants students to fail. On first day braggedabout how 50% of students drop his class and from remaining 50% fail the final. He makes his test questions super wordy and confusing on purpose which he admits to. Whenever I go to see him in office hours he is rarely there. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
All these positive reviews seem highly suspicious, I suspect some are written by Scott. Out of my class of 60 students, not one person had anything good to say about Scott. He takes pleasure in failing students, the exams are ridiculously hard and nothing like the assignments or homework. Avoid at all costs.
Robison loves to talk about how much everyone hates stats, and taking this class with him won't change your mind. No time management in lectures. Poorly balanced tests- either unfairly long or comically easy. Takes the idea of "you don't need to know why this works, just that it works" to the extreme- you're just memorizing a list of buzzwords
I thoroughly enjoyed my classes with Scott this semester. He keeps lectures entertaining and still manages to get the information across. The course itself is hard but he does a great job teaching it. Labs are mandatory to write your quizzes so don't expect to skip those.
Scott was a great prof. I know some people don't recommend him for higher stat levels (300s and above) but for me personally, he was an excellent prof for stat 213. He taught the class material thoroughly and took his time with lectures but he we still managed to finish everything on time. Would strongly recommend to anyone needing to stats.
Scott is a really good prof. He may come across a bit rude at first but in reality, he's just super straightforward.
Tells you what to expect on tests but hard course overall. Gave bonus opportunities on quizzes but quizzes very difficult as questions required time(only had 50m)The final we just did was ridiculous, not enough time to complete, made it more time-consuming by adding MC for what we already needed to write for the written-have to keep flipping pages
He is very good at teaching hard concepts & his lectures as well as the videos he would post were quite powerful tools. On the downside though he usually didnt give us enough time on tests but hed try to make that up with bonus marks on quizzes + 5% bonus from assignments. Final is quite hard. Overall hard course but good guy. Study a lot!!
Stats is pretty hard, but Scott wasnt in the slightest condescending when teaching the material. He would constantly tell the class how much people generally struggle with the course, and this made me feel like I wasnt the only one barely passing the course. I would recommend this prof
Ill stand by my opinion till the end that Scott is the best Stat prof out there. If you go to lecture, lab, and do the practice problems at the end of each note booklet youll do well despite the material being hard. Midterms and tests are worth quite a bit (70% of grade all together), but he boosted marks and theres a 5% bonus for assignments
I'm pretty sure that we can all agree that Stat 321 is a freakin' hard course in general! But if it weren't for Scott's extra 5% bonus on assigments, 3/4 best quiz marks to count, and all the other bonus opportunities he gave us on the quizzes, I don't think I would have gotten an A. Although, he definitely took us by surprise on the final!
He's alright, but don't ever take his course as an option if you care about your gpa. It took like 70% of my time to study for his class and the course load is must higher than any other course I've ever taken. Scott also doesn't always stick to his word, for example when he says something won't be on a test, it likely will be! So prepare to study!
He looks like a good prof at first, but his technic of teaching statistics is just awful. You do not show students the solved questions and expect them to understand it. He has videos on D2L which somewhat helps you but then it defeats the whole purpose of having lectures. Ridiculous prof do not take it from him.
Scott is a fast paced-prof, his tests are similar to assignments, he's good at teaching material, but all you need is a ton of practice to pass this course. Put in 100%, ask questions, do homework, and you'll see good results. Otherwise, Scott's smart with his questions and if you don't really understand the material, you wont solve well in exams.
Hilarious and sarcastic cowboy that loves math. I wouldn't want to take Stats with anyone but him. Good lectures, positive and funny. You must work hard and practice tons to do well. He does not make time outside of his scheduled office hours.
Great prof. Keeps you engaged during the lectures.
He is extremely fair and is not afraid to admit when a mistake is made and come to a solution that is best for everybody.
Not on lecture notes only on the problem answer and do anything he wants in the small quiz he will give you 300000 problems. Stupid and damn prof . Do not take his course.
Terrible STAT course coordinator. The webwork website is terrible to use and the way he has designed the course is awful. Just not a good person overall as well.
Very invested in the content, & a fantastic professor if you attend lectures. Fair tests & easy to do well if you keep on top of it. 2nd only to Claudia :)
Really funny, knows what he is talking about. Only complaint is that the lectures and learning is not too structured.
Scott gets a lot of bad rep for a course that is hard. It shouln't be taken as an option, and be prepared to work. He's really good at explaining concepts in a way that's understandable. His tests are too long and hard, but I have never written one of his tests he hasn't given bonus or curved. He's a fair guy with a great personality.
Scott likes to make jokes that aren't funny at all. Tests are also very difficult. Wish he had more examples and would go a little slower, showing us step by step by hand, and not on minitab. Once studying for finals, it is very difficult going over everything by hand when we were taught to do so.
Beware that Scott closes the D2L very early so you won't have access to anything on the day of the exam if you need to access any materials last minute. D2L site for STAT217 was disorganized and poorly labelled. Also for quizzes you can't see the question after you do it so you can't study where you got it wrong. You just get a grade. Same with 213
like every prof he isnt for everyone. i personally learned well from him but i do have friends who preferred other profs. his teaching style is fairly fast and steps can be skipped over during in class examples. its important that you keep up with the assignments and try to practice them until your comfortable. He has videos to solve problems !!
Scott was ok for STAT 217 however at times he goes fairly fast so if you miss a day since it all builds off the previous day it is easy to become lost.
His quizzes and midterms are nothing like the practice problems he gives. Extremely hard marker. Goes extremely fast in his lectures. If this is not a required course please don't take it, if you have to take it use a different prof
I had scott for 213 and 217. Initially he seems like he wont be a great prof but he gets better as you get used to him. Hes a funny prof and his lectures are good, but his writing is messy. Cares a lot for students in general but hard to access outside class and seems to brush off questions outside of class. Tests are easy if you practice.
Very good prof!!! Cant picture a good stats class where he doesnt teach it. You actually retain everything he teaches even after you write the final, unlike a few other profs. Take stats with him if you can.
Scott is a decent prof. The problems he goes through, he explains them well. His examples are thorough and are usually on the exams. However he tends to skim most of his lectures and expects you to go through the notes and self learn. He's not forgiving with marks and his exams are tough. I would recommend Chibry or Stallard first.
With this course, dont take it if youre not a stats or actuary major. It makes no sense to lower your GPA with this course. I think the teaching was fine, but if youre not good at tests generally, this course will really challenge you. I knew how to do all problems, but often the problems had stupid tricks to get results meaning they took time.
This was my hardest class for the semester but also my FAVORITE. Scott is super funny and teaches the content well. He wants u to succeed even tho the midterms can be tough. There was a 5% bonus opportunity. As long as u go to his class and keep up with the weekly quizzes/assignments, you'll be good. Dont buy the textbook but make sure to practice.
Scott is honestly a professor who is worth considering when taking this course. Most people say he creates long and difficult tests, which he indeed does. However, if you go to class and work through problems in the textbook, you should be more than fine. Please don't trust what other people say about him, since this course is hard regardless.
Robison is not fit to be a professor. When asked about grades and remarking , the gist of his response was "if you come to me too much, I'll make the final harder." He brings up, the pass fail rate almost everytime theres mention of a quiz. If someone makes a valid and formal complaint he makes the whole class suffer because his ego is bruised.
Awful. If you have to take this class, take it with someone else.
By far the worst prof I've had. Scott doesn't teach anything during the lecture, just shows how he would solve problems. He doesn't respond to questions well either.
So he is not a bad teacher and seems to know his content. But he is simply chaotic and has no order. You come in the class and you simply don't know what you're doing. He's rude on emails too. This course shouldn't be that hard as the content is easy. He tried to change things to prevent failure, but he simply fails incredibly as final is 50%.
Scott doesnt respond well to valid criticisms and is heavily disorganized. The method of teaching is simply ineffective for a class like stats since it lacks order. He always brings up "real life skills" but lacks the capacity to teach those skills.
Scott is very disorganized, shows tricks for problems but doesn't clearly outline which kind of problems to use them in so the tricks often get lost in translation. Read the textbook from the beginning of the semester and it hasn't cleared up any questions. Take this class with someone else.
Mans will say that he is tryin to make the class better for students but just gets rid of a midterm and adds a 20% worth quiz (wtf is the difference its still a midterm)&keeps the 50% final. When ppl ask questions in the class that challenge the structure of the course his pride gets hurt. Fix the marking on the quizzes its either you get 1or0. BS
Hes not a bad professor overall, but he is incredibly scatterbrained. His classes are hard to follow. He only does examples that look nothing like the questions asked in quizzes or tests. Basically nothing (4 quizzes and a final worth 50%) is for marks so its really easy to fail. Refuses to admit when hes wrong. Incredibly hard tests.
Scott is the worst professor I have ever had. His examples given in class and in the given textbook are nothing like the problems he designs on quizzes and exams. He responds poorly to feedback, and is one of the most unapproachable people I have ever worked with in my life. Disorganized, rude, and ultimately sets his students up to fail.
Honestly, the best prof I've had at u of c so far (second year). His homework is hard and so are his exams but if you really pay attention to him in class and actually do your best to understand your homework assignments it's not a hard class. As for approachability if you ask a dumb question be prepared for a dumb response.
Scott is a pretty good prof. He is funny and keeps you on your feet. He makes learning fun and interesting. The course itself is not incredibly easy, but Scott does make it pretty easy. Scott is a little scatter-brained and disorganized but overall a good intructor.
Disorganized, rude, and his lectures are useless. A complete waste of my mornings. He just does problems in his head, mumbles, writes the answer, and expects his students to just get it. A 50% passing rate is a reflection on you, Scott, not us.
Scott brings up the 50/50 pass fail rate of the class whenever possible. He says he wants to change it but keeps the format of the material taught disorganized and unclear. If you have questions, he makes it seem like an automatic F will be given if you even think about seeing him out of class. If you must take this class, find another option.
His lectures are very frustrating, he spends half the time off topic and in the time when he is doing examples he is very passive aggressive. He responds to questions in a rude way but passes them off as jokes. He makes up unnecessary rules and threatens to lower your grades if you even speak to him. The worst prof I've ever had
Scott clearly enjoys the content he is teaching, so I never dreaded a lecture. Tests are difficult but in the end he is fair with the grading scheme. Don't ask stupid questions about course structure/grading as he can be a bit harsh. If you have valid questions about course material he does his best to help you (granted its in office hours).
Went into the final with a 94 studied hard for the final but didnt pass. Got given a D+ because of one test even tho thats physically not possible as the final is worth 40%. He makes a rule you have to pass the final to move on. WORST CLASS EVER
I just took this course twice with him and just barely passed. The final was out of 31 marks and worth 50% of our grade. He keeps saying he wants to help people pass, yet he made it more impossible my second time around. Incredibly rude to students. Scatterbrained. Disorganized. Never looks up so he never answers questions. Biggest ego ever.
Do not take Scotts class! Scott is an extremely hard marker and is easily insulted when he questioned. Also, you have to pass the final in order to pass the class! Try going into the final with an A-, having a bad test day and ending up with a D+. I would give Scott a 0 if I could!
Fast at teaching but you can quickly adapt to it. He can go off topic but can also get his point across. Overall not too hard of a course if you put in the effort to do good. Wouldn't recommend if you're a slow learner. Otherwise pretty good at teaching as he is straightforward
I got 50s on both midterm but Scotts notes got me a 90 on the final. Only reason I passed is because of his notes. Generally a good prof who just gets down to
Scott knows the material well and has been teaching it for many years, he's the course coordinator. His lectures do go fast, so outside of class effort is needed to excel in this class. If you are looking for someone who is approachable and sympathetic, he is not your guy... Expect some harshness. Also don't expect much hints for exams or quizzes.
I liked the way he taught STAT 213, he made the very dry material engaging. His writing is a little messy. I do recommend going to class because what is said in the lecture really helps during the assignments and quizzes. The assignments, quizzes and midterm are all marked by the computer so no room for bias.
Doesn't solve problems step by step, but rather pulls out the already-completed solution and talks about it really fast, so effort outside of the lecture is required to understand. He really does care about students tho. Always tries to be fair and doesn't want to "trick" anyone. Not the clearest, but his intentions are always in the right place :)
I had Scott for 213 in which I thought he was pretty decent and better than most profs. However, for 217 it seemed like he completely lost the will to teach, we started using R Studio instead of minitab and a lot of the time he made it up as we went along. He started pre writing his notes and barely did practice questions. Rude when asked questions
Scott is overall a decent prof. Like others said, he uses prewritten notes for 217 which makes it difficult to grasp concepts. He also relies on you knowing small details from 213, which I wish he reviewed prior
Scott is unprofessional. He will not get back to emails and prefers that you post questions publicly (fine). However, when you do he will respond to them days later with a rude response that is of 0 help. His lectures are long, boring and fail to get to the point. Not a hard course. Just a really awful prof who does not care about his students.
At the beginning of the semester, it seemed as if Scott had no clue what he was talking about. Now that the course is over I can see that this was not his fault but stats 217 is a random course with information tying in together in later units. He did everything he could to allow students to succeed, would recommend taking.
I soon regretted being in this class simply due to the elitist behaviour Scott displays. As a bro, he is a funny guy but is super snarky and almost feels insulted when you ask a questions. His notes are so disorganized and class almost seemed like it was him playing on R. Honestly, best advice is just watch the pre-lab videos and figure it out
First, be wary of some reviews. We realized Robison writes some of his own reviews. He doesn't teach the same for higher stats courses. Bad lecturer and asks us to self learn. I self taught the entire course Notes are hard to read Unforgiving grader Avoid him for higher level stats
If you're looking for a prof who cares about their students, TURN AROUND. Scott severely lacks people skills and compassion. He also does not comprehend how emails work. He will not respond to any email you send him. His lectures are like Usain Bolt, our class was usually 2 chapters ahead of every other stat 213's class.
Did not go to any office hours so I don't know how he treats students, but as a professor, his teaching is clear and understandable. his notes are easy to understand, and watching the prelab videos basically guarantees you will do well on the quizzes.
I found Scott to be great in the beginning of the course, but halfway through he started to use pre written notes which made it hard to follow along as he stopped doing them step by step. His lab exercise videos were extremely helpful and detailed so make sure to watch them before your quizzes. Tests were fair and easy as long as you study
Let me be clear, I hated statistics but the only reason I got an A and was able to understand anything in this course was because of this prof. Totally recommend him.
One of the best profs, my only advise for you is to study and not to skip classes, the content is easy and his assignments are easy to follow but only if you study the material. Also the midterms are heavily based on the assignment they are similar exercises.
During the online semester, all of the STAT 213 teachers worked together to provide students with lessons. I got to say, Scott and Thuntida are the only professors who were actually good this semester. Scott knows what he is talking about, you just have to pay very close attention because he does not waste time like some of the other professors.
I didnt like Scott one bit. He is not a good teacher (no offence to him LOL). If you see Robinson on your schedule, RUNNNNNNNNN :)
gives pretty good online lectures and responds pretty well to discussion boards or emails. difficult class but lots of opportunity for practice. Can clearly understand each video as every topic is thoroughly communicated
AMAZING PROF, his instruction is phenomenal. Definitely recommend, go with him over any of the other profs. He makes STAT 213 easy, and that is important as this course is not too easy. He also checks emails quite quickly. GREAT PROF
He makes Stats actually understandable and is very clear and straight to the point. He is very promt on answering discussions and emails and overall made stats manageable.
Big fan of non-synchronous classes, not such a big fan of pre-recorded lectures with pre-written notes. Arbitrarily uses Rstudios instead of actually teaching formulas associated with the course.
Scott provides a lot of examples to help develop your understanding and he explains concepts really well. It is relatively easy to follow along. The test and quizzes aren't bad as long as you do the assignments then you'll do good. He doesn't check emails so don't even bother, but if you post on the discussion board he'll get back to you.
He will not help you at all with anything trust me never replies to any emails also will not provide clear notes basically you gotta teach yourself everything. Trust me when i say this hes the worst
You guys run he will ruin your gpa your grades, everything literally the worst person ever
Scott explains things in the course very well, the course is organized so you know what to expect. This is definitely a tougher course and you need to put a lot of effort into learning the content.
Prof Robison is an incredible stats professor. I had him for both 213 and 217 and he made both easy to understand despite being hard classes. He really takes the time to explain concepts and doesn't expect you to do work "by hand" with the option to do it with the computer. That said, he still explains HOW it works to make sure you understand.
Horrible professor. No practice questions to prepare for tests, doesn't respond to emails, and no textbook for reference. Lectures are pre-written so it is very difficult to follow along, lectures do a poor job of explaining anything about the course, and rarely do the Rstudio downloads required for the course work. Avoid if possible.
The courseload in this course is WAYY too high. It should be around 9 hours a week at most, however I am spending upwards of 15 hours a week. His videos are so boring and unhelpful that after watching them and attempting to do the labs I basically learn nothing and have to get help from TAs. Please never take 217 as an option.
Scott seems nice but his videos were horrible to understand for the class. They are so long and never seem to match up with the assignments and quizzes. He did understand when we needed extensions but always gave them the day the assignment was due so it was never worth it. I would not take him again but he was not the worst professor I have had.
Class taught completely asynchronously, so you can watch the lectures whenever, as long as you make sure to keep up with the content. Lectures explain content very well, lots of examples are done, and best of all - you're not expected to do everything by hand and memorize long formulas, since Scott shows you how to do everything using the computer.
Honestly, great prof, hes a good guy, very approachable, good teacher, just really long videos for lectures, the course takes work, its hard, but doable, you can get a solid A, quality of instruction is excellent. Overall, Highly recommend
I had Prof. Robison for STAT 213 and 217. He doesn't beat around the bush and doesn't waste time. All his lectures were asynchronous making them easy to go at your own pace and fit in your schedule. I see other people complain he doesn't answer emails but he made it clear unless they're personal, they belong on the discussion board. I recommend him
He is a nice human and he posts asynchronous videos which is great and he explains material well but his assignments and tests are definitely very challenging. If you have to take anything with him, best of luck - it will be difficult
Unnecessarily hard tests & assignments. Asynchronous lectures were pretty bad and everything was just examples from the textbook. Basically like having no prof. Good luck!
The prof gave everything asynch, but the schedule builder did not say that. lec time replaced with tut. Assignment workload is a lot: YOU NEED A GROUP. If you have a group then you should be good. He did that maybe that people make groups so he has to mark fewer submissions. Quizzes are ok: not too hard: questions are from lec.
honestly just a mid professor. taught what needed to be taught, nothing more nothing less. I definitely don't understand the 1 ratings tho, though he's not even close to that
Definitely beneficial to go to his classes. This course was tough and I think he over-explained things and made content more complicated than it was a lot of the time. However, he does care about his students and is generally pretty chill. 6 hour final was my breaking point.
Taught the material alright but made some rude comments towards me in office hours. Not the kindest and can make you seem kinda dumb.
He's a good professor but his tests can be a bit tough.
The professor is an effective teacher who ensures that the class grasps the material. Although the exams can be quite challenging, he made an effort to improve the class performance by giving opportunities for rewrites, which was very helpful. However, it is worth noting that at times he can be short-tempered and has a tendency to be rude.
He's a nice person and makes his lectures entertaining and engaging but does not explain the content well. He strays from the notes, goes on many side rants, and explains the content in a confusing manner. A month in I stopped going to class and watched Professor Mahler's recorded video lectures instead and my grades went up.
Scott was a pretty good professor, he taught well but sometimes taught extra stuff (code on R, different ways to do some problems) which could be helpful but was a little challenging to understand at first. He was funny which was nice because 8 am classes are miserable. His lectures along with Claudia's videos on D2L helped a ton.
Teaches mostly through examples, found this course pretty easy but there is quite a bit of homework/quizzes. Robison is engaging and explains many different strategies to find the answer
Hes a hilarious and genuine prof. I really liked attending his lectures. When he teaches however, there can be holes in his teaching and its up to you to figure it out. He gives good tips sometimes in his lectures, but its sometimes hard to understands him if there is gaps in his teaching abilities.
Avoid this prof if possible. Not very accessible - no office hours, will trash emails sent over the weekend. The course started okay but delivery got more and more disorganized. At times there was important info missing from lecture. It didn't help that many lectures got cancelled last minute. He can also be a bit mean-spirited & easily annoyed.
I like him sorta. The last few weeks' lectures mainly consist of how to do calculations by hand and not with the software, even though that is what we use. We could be using time more effectively, with more applicable examples. Overall though he is very kind, his online lectures are what I have been using and I find them very clear and helpful.
Our final was terrible, and we crashed multiple times. I believe Scott is somewhat, to, as Webwork has crashed before, BUT the registry also assigned the STAT 213 on the same day, which is uncontrollable. I am very upset that all the course content was deleted because we paid for a course, and I think we should be able to leave with it.
Posts all the lecture videos online, makeing it easy to catch up on your own time. Assignments and tests are easy. We faced many IT issues during the course, which I am sure will be resolved next semester. Although the exam was completely messed up he took it upon himself to help us make up for it. Definitely shows he cares about his students
He's a good understanding teacher, spinkles some dad jokes in lectures here n there. It's not him that is bad, it's the course that is. There's a ton of information and 99.9% of it is so complicated. There's a ton of different possibilities so you really have to give 110% in this class and make sure you understand it as much as you possibly can.
Amazing prof!
He has a good understanding of what he teaches and does want you to succeed (I think). Does not make himself available to students, can be condescending. This class is doable, it's definitely possible to get an A if you do the assignments and go to the lectures/watch them online. Units 1-3: go in person, units 4-6: watch online lectures on x2.
He's fine, he can be condescending at times but I think he does want students to do well. I think his lectures could be a lot more clear along with his notes. He has lots of videos, by end of the semester about 40 people were coming to the 300 person lecture because everyone was just watching the videos.
Attendance was not mandatory. He posts videos with all the units online and goes very in-depth with them. As long as you watch the videos, understand each unit, and do the webwork questions you will do fine! His midterms will have some theory questions that are a bit harder than the webwork questions but are 100% doable. The final was really easy!
They force you to buy a program but its definitely worth it, it saves you so much math calculations and formulas to handle. All exams are online, the lab quizzes are almost identical to lab exercises(unlimited tries) and grants you retries(70% of redone mark)
Scott's online videos are very helpful, I never went to any in-person lectures and was able to have a firm understanding of the material from watching the videos. WebWork may or may not have issues during exams, but Scott is very accommodating and supports the students through this. Scott is awesome.
He doesn't want you to learn anything. His lecture notes are difficult to read, bad handwriting and confusing formatting. The homework and tests are also very difficult. Some of the questions he gives make it difficult for you to know what exactly you need to do. It's like He is an English beginner who doesn't understand English grammar.
Passionate about the content he teaches but his approach to this course is just unacceptable. Lectures are just example questions with poor handwriting and mumbled explanations. Tests/assignments were difficult for no reason. Content isn't easy but prof makes it so much harder. Can't confirm anything about grading, he doesn't seem to know either.
He's better suited to be in a mental hospital ward than a college classroom
He is helpful if you go to him for help. Go to lectures and office hours. Office hours are a good place to work and ask questions. He's fair and gives us quizzes based of questions we've already done just with different numbers. He's a good professor and is passionate on teaching. He's very patient too.
He is an incredible professor. Go to office hours, talk to him, he's incredibly helpful & passionate about statistics. Lectures include many examples so you get to see what is actually happening rather than learning hours of theory. If you want to learn & care you'll do great. I can't believe how negatively he is rated. Hard course =/= bad prof.
He is the type of prof that actually cares about his pupils, spends his office hours on the math help center and a fun guy to be around. He goes through real life implementations of stats in a way that keeps you invested. Just keep in mind to put in the work from really early on, as long as you are on the right track and keeping up you'll do fine.
Dude's pretty funny. Respectful and helpful. Attendance is not mandatory. Attend a mix of his classes and watch Claudia Mahlers videos.
Explains things thoroughly yet quickly, if you need help with a topic, he's able to explain it in different ways to help understand. Class is super easy as long as you keep up with homework and practice on your own time
Worst
His lectures make it seem like he doesn't know anything, and his notes are the worst. Although he will tell us all the exam questions in advance, this still does not change the fact that he is not suitable for teaching. Please look for Claudia instead of him...
He's not great but he is nowhere close to the worst professor I've had. At least he makes it somewhat easy to understand.
Caring Prof who genuiely seems to try his best. Somtimes the lectures were a bit of a mess but we love him for it. Very entertaining and very approchable. tests were hard but fair, we were given similair questions in advance so it was very do-able if you just put some effort in.
Scott is very funny and clearly cares about his students. He gave us lots of chances to practice the material before the actual test and get feedback on our work. Though he has his quirks, overall he is a great prof and made the course a fun time.
Scott is a great prof who obviously cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Attendance isn't mandatory to have success but I'd encourage it as he teaches well and is very engaging. He makes a boring 8am class interesting.
Very disorganized, hard to understand, moves way to fast, isn't clear in his explanations. Teaches how to manually calculate things in a class based around using a software that calculates for you, the point of the class is to learn the software (R studio), not how to do mental math. What every you can do, do get in his class.
No further comments I wish to write.
Scott was an enthusiastic prof who I felt really tried to make the class topics as understandable as possible. He was always happy to answer questions and work with students to help them understand the content. I would definitely suggest doing the weekly exercise and assignments to prepare to the midterms and exam.
A very friendly professor, always enthusiastic about class. However, marks were often taken off for "requirements" that were not mentioned on any rubrics or assignment instructions, which I found unfair. Also never answered any emails, making him impossible to reach outside of class.
Scott does not do many examples in class and will often skip over many pages in the notes documents. Assignments have many questions and are difficult due to the little time he takes in class to demonstrate and the lack of practice questions provided. Overall he is a nice guy but does not understand most students are new to the course content.
Decent teacher, his online videos are helpful, going to class is so useless in my opinion, make sure to have friends for this class.
Scott is a decent professor, and the way the course is set up makes it pretty easy to get a good grade. Going to class is not necessary as he posts plenty of videos. My recommendation is to make the Math Help Center your friend if you plan on taking this course. Another recommendation is to save your R code and work from the assignments.
Overall, I thought he was a good prof. He's a funny guy and is accessible outside of class. At times, he was a bit rude when students tried to ask him questions before/after class, but was super nice and informative during office hours. His handwriting is a bit messy, but both good classes with recorded videos if you miss class.
STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PROF. His personality Isn't bad, however the structure of his class is HORRENDUS. There will be multiple questions in the tests that have not been properly discussed in class. He expects you to know the intricacies of R (which is VERY code sensitive) like he does, without any proper knowledge basis.
If you can take other prof, do it! Do not take any course with him. I know a lot of people who also hates him so much. He blabs so much and talks about unnecessary stuff. If you need a regrade on something, he makes himself like this almighty dude who you need to please for him to look into it.
Robison is a decent professor; he's decent at explaining things but the lectures are somewhat dull. However, I would recommend taking STAT 217 with him if he's an option. In terms of material, the initial unit is the hardest but it progressively gets easier. The midterms and final exams were fine if you understood the quizzes and assignments.
First unit is the most confusing. After that focus on the code and understand when to use it and the class is a breeze .Pre-lab videos are awesome since he explains how to solve the question which is similar to the on the lab. Write down your work/code for assignments and the ONLINE final is reused questions with different numbers from assignments.
Go to the TAs and to literally anyone else. This man will not help you, he's rude and unhelpful to the point that it's unprofessional over email. It's obvious he doesn't like teaching lower level statistics and makes it known.
Enjoyed Scotts' class a lot! He was very clear in class with what would be on assignments and exams and went over good examples as well. The videos on his D2L were really helpful too along with the tips in class for exams. Only talked to him during class so I'm unsure about outside of class but he seemed helpful. His lectures were engaging as well!
Professor Robison's STAT217 class can be challenging, but the online videos and unstuckstudy AI proved to be very helpful study tools. While the lectures may be dry, engaging with the material and attending study sessions can go a long way. Overall, a decent class if you're willing to put in the effort.
10/10 prof super easy work and no tests. Interactive in lectures as well as using great examples to help grasp consepts.
Great professor and amazing lectures
Seems great, class had no exams, almost everything was online and unlimited attempts. Honestly can't think of a downside.
Just attend class and avoid using homework sites to learn the material as it will just make it harder down the line. His lecture have a lot of personality to them and takes time to teach hard topics. Stay on top of assignments, labs, and activities and you are almost guaranteed to get a good mark. No exams.
funny guy.
Everything was online through Webwork. Lectures and notes covered exactly how to do the problems online with unlimited attempts, no traditional midterms or finals, just more online problems barely worth anything. Hilarious guy, and super enthusiastic even during 8 am class.
Absolutely enjoyed his lectures, especially such a dry subject. Highly recommend to anyone who struggles with math-related content.
Professor is very rude and difficult to ask any questions from. He hates answering questions and treats students like children who need punishment. Does not give any answers without mentioning the course outline and deletes all material once the course is finished without any warning. Hates dealing with SAS and doesn't like accommodations. Avoid.
All the assignments are online and there aren't any test in the course so it doesn't really matter what prof. you choose.
I think he's a great prof, I had him for my Stat 213 class and now for my Stat 217 class. Hilarious, caring and really know how make the lectures more interesting
He cares about comprehension, not just whether you can answer formulaic questions. If you show your work and aim to understand rather than just completing requirements, he'll recognize that and mark you accordingly. Lectures are hands-on: he demonstrates problems in class. We could replace exam marks with textbook problems - good for practice.
Doesn't care about students. Got sick and asked for an extension. Didn't care, I ended up having to withdraw from the class.
Scott is a great professor. His lectures helps a lot. He also takes feedback after every quiz and make changes accordingly to help everyone to learn and succeed.
I would've attended more classes because he's a good prof, I'm just not a morning person. He's quite funny and cares that you understand what he's talking about. While he teaches on paper, that doesn't detract from what you'll get from him in this heavily electronic class. Relevant examples and good notes that make outside of class homework easy.
Professor Robison made stats engaging and interesting. He took the time to explain concepts and how to do problems by hand even though the course focused on how to use R. While all the marks come from online assignments, they are structured in a way that you have to learn the material. Overall, great course and amazing prof.
Gives lots of opportunity to increase grades, especially if you have test anxiety
I wrote Rob's STAT213 midterm a few hours ago, and all I can say is this: everyone involved in writing that test must enjoy tormenting students. We were never introduced to anything even remotely as difficult as the questions that were on there. Worst part is, failing the midterm would cap your grade at a C. Most ridiculous experience I've ever had
Midterm was the worst exam I have written. Mind you I'm a 4.0 student and feel like I FAILED. The Mc was fair only for the written response to be completely out of left field, nothing like concepts taught in lecture. Scott himself admitted that test was too hard and gave us merely 15 minutes extra. He needs to curve so the average isnt failing.
The pacing and assessment design made the course feel unnecessarily difficult. Lecture coverage and exam expectations often didn't align, so I had to repeatedly restudy core concepts each week. Limited worked examples and late practice materials compounded the issue, making retention and application harder than in comparable courses.
Midterm was nothing like the material taught, some sections got material others couldn't access, 400 students out of 1.2k gave signatures within 48 hours after the test for a petition against it. Told us the C cap if u got
Does everything in his power to make the course as inconvenient as possible and will revoke d2l access day before final exam
we had over 400 signatures about the midterm cause it was that bad, none of the questions were questions that were remotely similar to ones we covered in class, practice resources were no where near the phrasing/ level of difficulty. this guy chatgpted his whole response addressing the absolutely horrible midterm :/
BRUTAL. Exams are all written yet he pushes r studio to solve the majority of his examples. He also tries teaching new concepts and software at the same time which is enough to make your head explode. Everything with statistics felt unorganized and almost hostile towards students. The exams were exponentially more difficult than class material.
Scott has continuously changed how he grades things in the course. He revoked the D2L a day before the final. Has had to curve EVERY quiz by at least 20-30% because he is writing too hard of exams for how he is teaching. He is unresponsive to email, but can be accessible out of class. Seems nice at first, but just out to see students fail.
Scott at first was a fun and cheerful guy who just loved statistics, but after that midterm, there was no coming back. Lectures are chill. However, questions on the midterm were out of left field. The main issue with this prof is that the exam difficulty did not meet the level of difficulty shown to us in assignments/lectures.
Seemed to be a good prof at the start of the course but then provided a midterm that was extremely difficult compared to the examples given in notes. We were a unit behind at the end cause of random tangents which caused us to not be able to submit assignments for due date. Will not answer emails or provide extra materials to study for exams.
Was not a very reasonable test maker. His tests were much harder compared to the assignments and lectures. The midterm was no where close to the difficulty of the assignments and included topics not even discussed in class. His lectures were a slow and he used goofy analogies that made the concepts even more confusing.
He refuses to answer emails because apparently sending emails out to your professors is "inappropriate". The midterm was unbelievable to say the least. Imagine if he taught you how to solve 10th grade math problems but gave you 12th grade problems on a test with minimal time. He used chatGPT to respond to everything. do not take this class.
The midterm was tough, but since 50% of the class is online assessments, passing and getting a solid grade isn't that difficult. The final was fairly easy; some high school finals were more difficult. Scott is a chill guy.
never replies to emails, in one of the online lectures he said to the online class 'i can't stop you guys from cheating' and then proceeds to give the in person classes an abysmal midterm he is very slow and teaches r code only but the test's are on math formulas not r code so you get f'ed. don't take his class save yourself.
I will admit, the midterm and final were horrendous. Granted, he is still a good professor who ended up curving the midterm 35% after students reached out. He understands that this is a difficult course. There are many online assignments to build your grade up!
Easy class. It is very chill.
terrible. course is taught very poorly
I would like to say that I believe Scott had good intentions seeing that we were the first class to do this course online since pre covid. Expectations were a bit unclear at the beginning. Midterm was horrible but he heard us out and made the final better. Stats is not a "hard" class its just not the easiest.
The lectures were not really helpful. He is not the best professor. I would definitely not take this class ever again.
Course was taught so poorly and it made the class very unenjoyable. The exams barely had any of the stuff we discussed in them. His teaching itself isn't too bad, just did not include anything he taught on the midterm. 400 people had to sign a spreadsheet to curve our midterm grade if that tells you anything
