little weird but..ok
Your whole grade depends on one paper!!
he's an ok guy. Tough grader though.
Worst professor I've ever had.
He's brilliant. Surfer.
do what he want you to do. and u'll pass the class. just pay attention and memorize what he said.
He scared the class the 1st day and everyone dropped. Pay attention, read the hw stories, and if you can write papers-you'll do great. There is a six page research paper but he lets you do rewrites. I got an A and will be take him for English 205.
good guy. mostly busy work. there is a 6-8 pare research paper but it's chill....like him. just go to class even if you zone out, just show up and you'll end up with a B at least.
Surfer. Described himself once as a "cedar tree dreaming." Comepletely clueless. His one saving grace is that our final research paper did not have to be about literature, but he remained a vapid non-force throughout the class.
Great teacher
THE ABSOLUTE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. I MEAN THE GUY PUTS THE D IN DULL!!! MONOTONE VOICE PUTS YOU TO SLEEP LIKE A GOOD BOOK BEFORE BED TIME. NO SENCE OF HUMOR. WEARS THAT SAME OLE BLACK SUIT CLASS AFTER CLASS. DUDE GET ANOTHER SUITE.
Scott tries to scare you by saying that your whole grade depends on your final paper. If you do good on your in class essays don't even sweat the final essay. He is very boring in class and half the time likes to waste your time with group work.
His class is very boring, but very easy. He is a stickler for making you stay there till the last minute of class,he even tried to change the time on the clock in the classroom because he thought it was fast. He doesn't communicate very well.
the class was boring he gave me 'B'for my final research paper even though he said he loved my work and he wanted to keep it
I really like this teacher. He's a little out there, but also intelligent, honest, and interesting. Can be monotone, but if you pay attention, you can learn a lot from him and your classmates. "Workshop" was a good way to get feedback on your
Writing is the key to this class. Make sure you read all the works assigned and you'll do fine. Writing an in-class essay was difficult to do in the little time that he allots and takes practice. Most of our time was spent in discussion groups.
love starbuck, wish i could take more of his classes...surfer dude, easygoing, just do the work and turn assignments in on time.
Don't do it!!!
Come on guys, he's not that bad!
He is pretty laid back I guess. You need to keep YOURSELF in check to succeed in his class. He talks pretty funny, it's cool though. I recommend him to the "higher" class of people out there.
The creative writing class is interesting and easy. Mostly poetry so every class we just sat and wrote or listened to poetry from other students. Wouldn't say it was challenging, but more inspiring than most classes. CAN get a bit boring.
I can not believe all the bad remarks are about the same Starbuck that I took... I thought that he was great. Really laid back guy with great stories. I felt that he took the time to get to know me and my interests. He was very encouraging when it came to my writing. I loved his class!!!!
If you like a teacher that is stuck to the rules and will mark you down on the littlist thing, Scotts your man.
this was the single most inspirational teacher i have had so far at mesa. he is sooo kind it almost hurts your feelings, picks great stuff to read and talk about, he is a fair grader, he sits in a student desk to talk with the class about the readings, its obvious how much he cares about his job.
Very straight forward instructor. The material is pretty dry. It's not too hard to get an A. I got perfect scores on almost all of my papers. There is an exit exam to go to ENG 101 or 105. The class moves really slow. Highly recommend.
LOVE HIM! He's a hippy though. Very layed back in his class. Some writing and reading neccessary, but if your interested, its not hard at all.
Prof. Starbuck is a rare specimen in Mesa's English Dept., he is an excellent English teacher. He cares about the written word and stays very focused. Encouraging and respectful to all students in class.
Very straight forward with no surprises. There are no re-writes so make sure you proofread your work. Highly recommended! I learned quite a bit. He's very clear with his instruction. I actually enjoy writing now.
COOL TEACHER. Very laid back and always willing to help. Readings are basic, tests are multiple choice but pay attention to research paper.

Great teacher. Really all he cared about was making sure most of the class passed the exit exam. He was very chill and knew exactly what he was talking about. He talks like a surfer dude.
Scott has taught me so much this semester. He is very well read and a great professor. He just wants to inspire people to find literature that they love and I found many works I enjoyed in his course.
SUPER interesting guy. Class was worth going to just to hear him talk. He is very passionate and knowledgeable about lit. He made class discussions very interesting. Gives 3 open book open note exams. 10 Quizes, 1 paper and journals.
This guy knows what he is talking about! We watched a couple of cool movies, including part of "Office Space." I loved his class. He splits you into groups to work. It's an easy A if you try. Not a lot of homework. Totally reccomend him!!!! Starbucks' #1
He has a strong surfer accent but he is good at what he does.
Scott understands that this class will be at the foundation of your entire college career. He works to help you understand the basics and admits his only goal is help you pass. Do the work, rewrite if allowed and you will do well. As long as you pass the exit exam , a requirement for all Eng 51 classes.
Great.
He created a great environment for begining writers to grow. I would take his class again. He was great.
I took him over the summer and he was great!
Took him for eng 51 and learned a ton. He gears the whole class towards the exit exam and has a high pass rate. He makes writing fun and easy! Take him you will like his class!
Prof. Starbucks is WONDERFUL! He's style for Eng. 51 is without like or equal. GO TO CLASS-- you will get something out of it. He's helpful and is your tool out of Eng. 51. He's into surfing-- too bad he's not younger!;)
TAKE HIM> YOU CAN GET AN EASY A. HE LETS YOU REDO THE FIRST FEW ASSIGNEMENT SO THAT YOU CAN GET A BETTER GRADE> I LOVED HIS CLASS
Our 205 class seemed to move pretty slow, however it was pretty easy. If you took him for english 51 and think this class is gonna be that easy think again. His grading style changes and he expects a lot more from you as a writer.
Starbuck teaches the class as if english is your major. He's really tough on grading and expects way too much for a 200 level class. I'm a strong writer and got a C..don't take him
By far the greatest teacher I've ever had! Besides learning about world literature, I learned more about LIFE in 16 weeks that I have in 21 years. He is fun, cool and straight up enlightening. Take World Lit with him if you can!
Where do I start? So his a nice guy and will help you in any way but he loves surfing that's all he'll talk about every example he'll give you will be about surfing. His funny in his own way and the class was confusing, he would ask for papers but never graded them. Not a horrible teacher but not the best.
AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME! Not only is 80% of the class student discussion of the readings, but he also gives you a more deeper insight into what the material means. Very rewarding of effort even if Lit isn't your thing. Show up with an open mind and read the material and its a guaranteed B at worst. Definetely taking him again if I can 4 anything!
Scott is a good instructor. He scared me a little at first, but if you do what he says for the essays then the class is cake (a little stressful though). This was critical thinking- so that is what he expected- if you morons can't handle it then go back to 101. go to office hours and he is very helpful!
This man is a genius! I?ve never met a teacher that could quote from all the brilliant writers out there by memory...
Well Scott was a really cool teacher. I was kind of nervous because the class started out with about 30 students and ended up with only 5 but it was still good. Listen to how he wants the papers written and give good details and participate in class and you should do fine. He is a really good teacher that has his own unique style of teaching.
THE BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD
Mr.Starbuck has been one of my fav professors! His clear about the work that needs to be done. Just follow the syllabus & be involved in class discussions.
If you want to get better at writing take his class show up and participate. What he expects from you is very clear and he is always available for help.
This guy has a brain that just won't stop - brilliant, funy, and nice
his class is to easy but very informational.
Really enjoyed his class. The work wasn't hard but it was stimulating and interesting which made the course a very enjoyable. Scott is incredibly understanding of strict work schedules and was more than accommodating to help me succeed. Not only will i go out of my way to refer him but i will definitely try to get him as a professor again.
Professor Starbuck is one of the best professors that I?ve had. He answers all questions in a non-condescending way and he lets you use your own experiences instead of the books to complete writing assignments. 100% recommendation.
horrible teacher the previous comments lie!it is hard to find out where you are in the class since all the pints are given after the withdrawal deadline.only 300 of the 1000 class point can be earned before u can leave the class and i needed it to transfer so i had to drop and take it someplace else to make sure i got a passing grade dont take him!
Professor Starbuck is by far the best English professor at Mesa. He keeps class interesting and inspires thinking and debate. An absolute must take professor for anyone at Mesa
Extremely difficult to get an A, but you can get a B with a moderate effort. His grading system is nonsense. I got 3 As and ended up with a B due to his nonsense grading system.
Starbuck is great, he remembers more off the top of his head than any professor I've met. He's reliable, knowledgeable, engaging, and he cares about what he does. His coursework is never overwhelming and he's very reasonable with deadlines and attendance. He can really go off on a tangent at times, but he always comes back to the subject at hand.
One of the most life changing classes I've ever taken- he presents the material in a way that his students can relate to. If ur all about structure and organization than he might not be for u. He doesn't rush the lessons, he wants u to take time to appreciate their meanings. Amazing teacher! Very inspriational, funny, and wise. :)
Professor Starbuck is an excellent English instructor. This class helped me to realize that I have a creative side which writing taps into.Professor Starbucks teaching approach of life and familiarities as literary devices, in class essays, grammar videos and group activities really helped me to enjoy and write effectively. I recommend starbuck.
Very easy class. Professor Starbuck may seem intimidating the first day, but he's really a nice guy. He helps with anything and everything. The writing assignments are easy. He helps bring out your creative side.
Amazing class! Super knowledgeable professor. If you are not open minded you might not enjoy the class. He has a lot of wisdom!
this teacher is chilli, what i mean is that you shoudl take it. he is super laid back. teaches you to think critically he likes when youuse creatives words. easy class. no daily homework. just projects over the course. you can even redo assignments turned in, let him know though. he might seem a little stoned, but hes 100% smart. i recom him
You'll actually learn something, this was a great class
Very fun class. He's very funny and make jokes to keep us entertained. I hated English so much but after taking this class, It's now one of my favs. Very helpful with questions and actually teaches you how to write paragraphs and essays. A must have teacher.
Great teacher by far!!. He actually cares about his student's and is willing to get to know them not like other professors who don't even know your name by the end of the semester. If you're able to get in his class I highly recommend it. Thanks again Starbuck!!! -Antonio
You wont regret having him as your instructor! Hes 110% understanding, he's extremely easy to get along with and to be honest, its damn near impossible not to get an A in his class!
Starbuck is an impeccable professor. I learned more in his Creative Writing class than I have in any other class I have ever attended. The class is a blast, the environment is safe and comfortable, and the work load is manageable and reasonable for working adults. I highly recommend him.
I commend his ability to read hundreds of student stories and still make individual comments on each paper. That is a true sign of dedication to teaching! All with a positive attitude and a desire to share.
If you are passionate about writing and you want to excel your ability to write, Professor Starbuck is the professor for you. His creative writing class, by far, has been one of the most HELPFUL and FULLFULLING classes that I have taken.
His class has 1 10-question exam worth 200 points, 3 essays (1 of which is in class), and 5 pop quizzes. Do not take this class if you are not familiar with politicsenvironmental law. It was extremely difficult. There was probably only 10 people left at the end of the semester. He's not very clear with directions. Overall he's a nice guy.
Scott is one of the most understanding professors I have ever had. This guy really loves what he does. This was by far the toughest English course I have taken, but glad I stuck through it. He's a tough pill to swallow at first, but stick through the course. He's a good guy. 3 big essays, 1 of which is in class. 1 closed note test. 5 pop quizzes.
The coolest teacher I have ever had. His stories are so interesting as well as his lectures. We only used the textbook like twice in the entire semester so i recommend not buying on and to just share with the person sitting next to you. He is a very great guy and very sweet. I recommend him to everyone
As long as you show up, pay attention, and put in the effort you'll do well. He likes to keep you on your toes, at times. He's all about helping you find your inspiration to write. When he gives you reading assignments, do them. There would be times when we would have to take turns reading aloud because some wouldn't do their reading assignments.
I had Professor Starbuck for English 205 8 week course. I don't usually do ratings on this site but I believe he is one worth to share with. He is such a caring & honest professor. Don't miss class and simply do your assignments and you will do well. He is always willing to help/hear out his students. Not many professors out there like him!
Starbuck is a great Professor. Had him for Eng 49. Pretty easy class but keep in mind there are not a lot of assignments. That being said they're weighted heavily on your grade. Got 90 & 95's on my last two in class essays, and good grades on my paragraphs but still got a C because I did poorly on one test from reading a book. Would take again.
He was a really great teacher overall. Always held good discussions that were interesting and got everyone involved without them feeling pressured. He's very straight forward on what he wants to see in your papers. I really appreciate that because some teachers are vague in what they want. I highly recommend him.
He is a very knowledgeable prof in English and literature, but he's chill about it and let's you learn as much as you want. I took his poetry seminar, and it really helped me be creative and write again. He sometimes brings some of his students who became published to the class. if you want an easy A, take any of his classes, nothings mandatory.
Enjoyed how he incorporated environmental issues into the english course. You'll watch and read many things related to global warming. However he gives less than five assignments, 3-4 of them being essays each worth about 25% of your grade. If you're a great writer or dont care for an A I'd definately reccomend him. Little to no homework.
Scott Starbuck is one of the best professors I've ever had in my college experience. He is extremely competent and caring. His class offered me so much insight and perspective toward reading/analyzing literature. The only assignments are writing 2 nonfiction essays, 3-15 pages. We workshop everyone's submitted pieces and give feedback respectfully.
Professor Starbuck is a notch above the rest. He teaches you and inspires you everyday at class. He believes creative writing is freedom, and he is a strong advocate of that belief and it shows. I became a much better writer after taking Starbuck. Can't recommend enough.
Do not take this course if you want to learn English. Not once was there discussion on how to improve our writing. All that we talked about was climate change and how if we don't do something we will all die by 2050. This class is not English. If you want a free grade and can put up with useless lectures take this course.
Took Professor Scott for English 205 spring 2022. His class had a focus on the climate emergency. You watch videos and do discussions in class. If you want to get more informed about the climate emergency take this class. If you need to improve your writing maybe take a different class. Easy A. 3 papers and few discussion post.
He is passionate about Climate Change and the entire course will be about it! I got an A in the course, but it was not easy.
The class discussions are not only informative but also eye-opening, and Professor Starbuck provides clear requirements for graded work. He offers constructive feedback without being overly critical. I highly recommend taking Professor Starbuck's class.
