Tests are really easy and have extra credit. Class really doesn't require a lot of outside work, just make sure you know your basic American History and you'll be fine. Has movies every Friday that are really interesting about various topics. I learned quite a bit, and he offers a lot of extra credit opportunities that I never did.

I took 202 and 201 with him. Class is interesting and as long as you take good notes you can do good on the test. I don't think you even need to buy the book. Do the extra credit and getting an A won't be too difficult, and you'll probably learn something!
Really makes class enjoyable. Easy to listen to. Usually watch movies on friday so thats nice. Quizzes and tests are fine as long as you study the notes he gives during lectures
I'm not a big history fan, but he made it bearable. Can miss up to 3 classes before he starts taking off points. Tests weren't too bad.
He doesn't make you remember specific dates, which is always nice. Make sure to take notes and you'll be more than fine in his class. Offers a lot of really simple extra credit - like watching historical movies and writing a page about them. Takes attendance, but class isn't bad at all. Shows lots of movies too.
I took this class last year at UNO and failed, took it again this year and passed with a B+ online. GREAT teacher, the book was really helpful, his lectures online were very clear and helpful. Great teacher, I absolutely recommend him!
Very easy going guy. Class is boring but he makes it bareable. Don't need to memorize dates. I would suggest showing up to class, as he randomly takes attendance. Take notes. Don't really need the book.
This guy was awesome! He is a great teacher. I learned a lot
Super great teacher! Awesome lectures, he makes everything come together and he jokes with the class. Movies on Fridays.
The best professor I have ever had! I received an A+ in this class and never even cracked the book. Tests are based on notes in class and movies watched on Fridays. Before this class I hated history, but now I actually understand it! He makes jokes throughout the class and many times makes attendence worth extra credit.
Although the subject of this class is easy, Stempson makes it even easier. Very up front with his style and grades. Difficult to screw it up too much. Study guide covers all questions on the test. Take him!
Stempson is the best teacher I've ever had! Awesome teacher + sports = Best Class Ever. TAKE IT!!!!
If you like history or you don't, you will enjoy this class. He's a great teacher, wants everyone to pass, and helps if you need it. He offers extra credit too! If you have to take HIST 201, 202, or 222, I've had him in all three and it's a blast.
If you need history classes, take them with him..theyre all set up the same with him, 202,201 etc..dont need the book, just go to class and copy everything he puts on the board, if you do that and pay attention, no reason for any headaches at all
Great professor. One of the best history professors I've ever had. Would definitely recommend taking as many classes with him as possible. Lectures are always worth going to.
I have no interest in learning History whatsoever, but Professor Stempson actually made it interesting. I made sure to take all my History classes with him! He is a great teacher, extremely helpful to his students, and has a great sense of humor. I would suggest taking him for every History class you can!!
He gave feedback and was timely about responding to any questions or concerns.
Great professor, loves his job and his subject, offers lots of extra credit, easy tests as long as you study, read the material, and know and love sports, highly recommend taking his classes, especially history of sports, shows a lot of movies, fun class overall
It was really, really easy. All you have to do is show up and take notes and you'll do fine on the tests.
Awesome teacher. Makes class easy and interesting. Take notes of the lectures and read the book and you should be just fine
History of Sport was the easiest, most entertaining class possible. Stempson is a fantastic teacher. Take this class! You won't regret it unless you fail to show up or don't take notes.
Great professor always makes lectures fun and interesting! Movie fridays are the best too!
Hands down best professor at UNL, Makes lectures fun, Tests are easy as long as you pay attention. Nice professor.
You will want to go to class. Stempson is one of the best teachers I have ever had and his class is extremely enjoyable.
You will want to go to class. Stempson is one of the best teachers I have ever had and his class is extremely enjoyable.
The teacher was knowledgable and interesting for a lecture class. Pay attention in class and on quizzes, the same questions usually pop up on future exams. The tests aren't hard if you take good notes in class and review them. There is a fairly strict attendance policy that can really hurt your grade.
His class is very easy! He shows a lot of videos and the tests and quizzes do not have a lot of surprises. Students know the test essays beforehand. He is fun, but he tries too much to make his students like him. Still, good class!
The class I took with him was incredibly easy and fun to be in. He used to own a bar so he kept things interesting by talking about sports and drinking in addition to History. Overall, I had a great experience with Professor Stempson.
Had a brand new textbook this semester written by Stempson. Sometimes it seems like he didn't translate his quizzes/tests over to meet the new book. Made material hard to follow/find because it has no organization yet since it's unfinished. He pulled a couple rough moves that made me struggle in a class I shouldn't be. Not a fan.
Such a great class and teacher! So easy to be interested, he actually cares about his students and what he is teaching. Not a hard grader and not a heavy course load. Take his class for sure!
Enjoyed the content of the class, but it was hard to earn a good grade. Professor gives pop quizzes. Most of the quiz and exam questions are random and impossible to study for. Professor wrote the textbook so he assumes students know it at the same level he does. If you watch Sports Center more than once a day on your own, take this course.
Great teacher, but I took the class online and some of his recorded lectures didn't match up with what he was working on in-class (since they were filmed several years ago), so there were some things that showed up on the tests that weren't in the books or the recorded lectures. Good essay grader though, and eager to help.
Attend the lectures and you are guaranteed a B+ for sure. His quizzes are straight from his lecture and the online homework, that goes for the same tests.
This class has a lot of content and information to cover. There is a lot of information in the reading to remember and he likes to give pop quizzes so if you don't read it hurts. The information is cool there is just a lot and be ready to study for tests because there is a lot of content to cover. Overall he is a pretty cool guy though.
He is an amazing teacher. The pop quizzes are really easy, they all come straight from the book and online homework. I recommend doing the study guides that are provided on MyHistoryLab because that's where he gets the questions from. He is a pretty fun teacher and likes to go into depth on topics.
You will need the textbook, and possibly an online access code to my history lab. You take quizzes weekly on there. He does give out pop quizzes. But he explains everything clearly.
He wrote the book and the pop quizzes were all just over trivial knowledge instead of conceptional content. Very hard to study for.
The class is just memorizing a bunch of facts, dates, events, and people from every sport over a long range of time. Stupid because this information is not relevant in life so it's already forgotten. He is a cool guy but doesn't test you well. The final exam was supposed to be mostly over Unit 3 but ended up being majority cumulative questions.
Stempson is a great professor that is always willing to help. Class was very fun and informative even though it was an online course. I'll be taking more courses with him in the future!
I took this class online and the class lectures are so out of date that it doesn't properly prepare you for your tests. There's a lot of unnecessary homework and the teacher didn't respond to any of my 5 emails I sent all semester long with questions.
He doesn't present everything during his lectures, so in order to do well on the pop quizzes you have to read the book. If you attend class, he usually hints at whenever quizzes are and gives TONS of extra credit opportunities. He is also a pretty tough grader when it comes to test essays.
Because it was an online class, there really wasn't any attendance policy. But participation matters. You have to complete the revel assignments, quizzes and journals. Make sure to read the books for the Doc quizzes. Overall a good class if you put in the work!
I loved his class and got a 99 in it. Attendance was mandatory. He only lectures and doesn't have a power point but it doesn't matter because he is interesting and pretty much all the test answers are in his lectures. He gives quizzes after most of his classes but if you pay attention in class you can easily get a 100 on them
Lectures are WAY out of date. No slideshows or easy way to take notes for the exams. As long as you read the book for the Doc quizzes and put in the work. You should be okay.
He picks random days to have quizzes but gives up to 5 extra credit points every quiz.
He graded only on chapter quizzes, 3 exams, and 1 paper. His quizzes were hard and tests even harder. He really tested on small details that you wouldn't think you needed to know. He did offer extra credit at the end of the semester (10 points). I took this class online which was easily paced. Exam 3 is comprehensive and a lot of old test questions
Professor Stempson is easily one of my favorite professors. His lectures were fun, and the tests were shaped similar to his lectures, if you take good notes and pay attention in class, you will do great. He was very accessible outside of class and will answer any questions you have over lecture or review. Definitely take him if you have the chance.
Hell of a professor. If you love sports, take this class. Mainly focused on baseball and beginning of football. watch videos almost daily. attendance required via tophat. only three exams which includes final. cancels class frequently on Friday's. take this class with stempson and get an easy A.
He was a really cool guy. Would cancel class if he had a personal conflict. Pop Quizzes were not too bad. You watch videos like 50% of the time. However, the tests were really hard and the questions were very detailed.
Stempson is a fantastic teacher. His lectures are very old school, but it is clear to understand everything. His exams are word for word with what he says in lecture. Does not try to trick you. Easiest Ace 5 course to take.
Exams are way too hard.
is there anyone that have the exam study guide for HIST111?
He is very knowledgable, loves what he does, and it shows.
Don't take this class unless you are interested in learning about the history of American baseball. Completely unknowledgeable about history of other sports besides baseball and football. Also Women's sports somehow do not exist in this version of history of sports. Wrote a textbook to make his students buy it for $100 a pop and pop quizzes.
Scott was a very good professor. He really cares about what he does and is very helpful when it comes to helping students. He knows the content well as he wrote the textbook himself. His lectures can drag on at times but he tries to make things interesting. The class was not hard at all if you even remotely tried and there was lots of extra credit.
His lecture is just so so, but quizzes and exams are not relevant to his lecture at all. that means you can't get a good grade unless you are extremely lucky to guess the right answer.
Great teacher, requires some reading for quizzes for and writing but as long as you try and complete tasks you will get a good grade. Quizzes were taken at-home with resources available.
I HIGHLY recommend taking one of his history classes. Hes a very good professor and cares about the success of his students.
You barley have any grades in this class. There's only 3 exams, a final paper and about 6 quizzes. The tests are SOOO hard and have nothing to do with his lectures.
His exams are so hard!! They don't have anything to do with his lectures!
Probably the most traditional teacher I have ever had. He tried using Zoom for the lectures and couldn't figure how to use it. Good in-class lectures. He does not use powerpoint or any other forms of technology. The only thing he uses for lectures are hand written words on a sheet of notebook paper. Watch out for pop quizzes!
If you are interested in sports, this class will be very interesting to you. Overall, the class is not very difficult besides the tests and quizzes. The questions can be oddly specific and detailed but reading the book and going to lectures definitely helps. Take advantage of extra credit!!
This class is History of the present. It is my favorite class I have taken and I do not keep up with current events. If you need an easy but fun history class take this one. Scott is also the best teacher. His lectures are fun and he is not a super hard grader. As long as you put effort into your work you will get a good grade.
Literally the worst class I have ever taken at UNL. I am a junior and I have never had a class be so intense. Grades you on 12 quizzes, which youre supposed to read the book (that he wrote) but the chapters are so long and jumbled its difficult to know what to even look for. Plus 3 exams. Which are awful, the "study guide" is a joke. STAY AWAY!
He is super chill. Not much work outside of class besides studying. He will occasionally cancel class without assigning work. He is respectful towards all opinions and a really down to Earth guy! He also provides a bonus question for the quizzes so that you can miss one question and get a 100%. My favorite class right now! 10/10 recommend
Scotts a great professor and is very knowledgeable in his field as a professor should be. The class consists of 2 exams, a couple pop quizzes, a paper and the final. The tests are pretty challenging because they compose of small details that are pulled from the book which he wrote. However he offers a lot of extra credit to mitigate this
Worst class I have taken throughout college and I am a STEM major. The 2 midterms (on lockdown) were hard and you have to read every detail of the book to get a remotely okay grade. Quizzes are lockdown w/ webcam and 8 min long (impossible). Lectures are pre-recorded from several years ago and not helpful at all- I can't even hear what he's saying.
This was the absolute worst class I have ever taken. Stempson was rude and ignored emails, never sent out 1 announcement, and made exams crazy difficult. Only 3 exams and a few quizzes (8 min time limit)- all lockdown w webcam. SO rude. Lectures are irrelevant and unclear. I absolutely hate this class more than anything. You have been warned.
Uses a lot of videos/documentaries as lectures which was super nice!
Dr. Stempson is an amazing teacher and is great at making lectures informative and interesting. His teaching style is more traditional than typical, but he does a wonderful job and I really liked it. There are 6-7 pop quizzes, but he will warn you they are coming and drops your lowest grade, and there are lots of bonus/extra credit opportunities!
Amazing Professor, all you need to do is show up to class, which he allows 3 absences until he starts docking points, 3 small essays which consist of like 3 easy questions, just put a little effort in it and its an easy 100, pop quizzes were not that hard if you just show up
Professor Stempson teaches very old-school, but it works well. The class itself is introductory, so its fairly easy, but we cover a lot of content, so the textbook is your friend. Stempson is very laid back and approachable. If you have questions, email him or go to office hours. I would 100% recommend this class for anyone, I had a great time!
He gives six pop quizzes in the semester. There is also a group project and you can't pick who you work with. My group got stuck with someone who did nothing and we couldn't do anything about it. Honestly not a fan of that work model.
I took this class online. You are expected to read and watch every lecture and article he sends out or you're cooked for the quizzes, which are 5 questions, 4 minutes time length, lockdown browser with webcam. And for exams, they are lockdown browser or DLC and the questions on the exam are about the littlest of details from random articles.
I found this class really difficult online. Not aided by long readings, 10+ year old lecture videos, and test questions that were from tiny book details. Offers up to 10 points extra credit which helped, but weekly quizzes can be hard and can kill your grade. Dr. Stempson is knowledgeable in this field but the way class worked online was not ideal.
This guy is terrible. HIST112 online with writing assignments that are graded on whether he agrees with your political views or not. 6 quizzes that bring your grade down by 40 points when you get 1 out of 5 questions wrong. The class learning criteria needs to be rewritten by the history department because this course was an waste of time and money
I had a great experience with this professor. He's very understanding and genuinely wants to help you succeed. His lectures are clear and make sense, but be prepared for the exams—they can be quite long and usually include an essay question.
His lectures usually have nothing to do with the weekly quizzes you take. When a majority of the class basically failed the first exam he blamed it on the books not being available at the beginning of the semester. Overall, would not recommend taking this course, especially online as you will probably struggle through it and be extremely annoyed.
This class is rough. You could love sports a lot and still not do well in this class. He uses Top hat for attendance so attendance points do matter and he has quizzes some classes but never says before hand when they are. He is lowkey sexist and the exams have questions from the book but are very random.
Do not take this class. The professor teaches it using materials such as Prager U and republican comedians. He once made a remark in class along the lines of “I've had a few jokes that have gone too far, but certainly never to the level of sexual harassment.” The class is incredibly easy, but so emotionally draining if you have any empathy
Was a great teacher and yes the class was heavier on the homework side, I thought he graded pretty easy. I also appreciated he was always available to help and was very understanding.
Avoid taking an online course with this instructor. He requires a "qualified proctor" and records every quiz, which feels unnecessarily strict for a 100-level history class. His policies are extreme, and I doubt he's effective at his job. He seems odd and out of touch with reasonable expectations. I cannot imagine what he's like in reallife
It was an online class and all there was to do was one quiz for ten questions each week. He was an easy grader and the tests and midterms were all questions from quizzes where you can go back and look at the wrong and right answers.
loved professor stempson! mostly common sense if you just show up and do the work, you actually have to read tho. beware of the essays on exams and pop quizzes. uses top hat for quizzes and attendance. would highly recommend!
one of the best professors ever! he will bend over backwards for you, he genuinely cares about his students and he wants you to succeed, he offers extra credit. i would highly recommend this professor if you need this class as a credit. he is just an overall great person
Stempson is super chill and will help you in any way he can. He teaches old school, mainly writing up terms on the board, which worked super well for me, but I know it doesn't work for everyone. He does give pop quizzes, so it is important to go to class.
