he's a good teacher. gives back good insight on papers really helps to improve writing skills. his tone of voice seems to flucuate a lot, which can make it hard to stay awake. great sense of humor. overall i recommend him.
Mr. Tenney is of the best teacher i ever had in america. i wish i still have him in one of my classes but im already at csn. he used to teach at hi tech institute but i guess he moved to unlv. he is very helpful and encourage you to do well. class is easy if you are present all the time and just listen and you'll pass his class. he's cute=)
Professor Tenney is awesome! He's cute and smart. He encourages everyone to give thier point of view but make sure to back it up with evidence from the text. If you go to class and follow the guidelines you will do very well.I started the semester pretty rough but ended up with a high B because i started attending class.
2 thumbs up. I didn't like him at first. He is very solid and unwavering in his views. It takes a good argument to pursuade him. He's an ex-lawyer.But he grew on me and helped me establish a stronger writing style. He's got a dry sense of humor and is pretty funny if you play along. Relatively easy class. Solid amounts Homework and 4 Papers were due.
I gotta be honest, at first I didn't like him very much. But as the semester steadily went on I grew to like him. He's helpful with your writing and gives good tips. In-class arguments are good; there always seemed to be an interesting subject discussed. Definetely pick Tenney for English!
He's scary at first but if you stick it out in his class, you will find he is one of the most helpful English teachers you will ever have. His assignments seem hard, but he grades fairly easily. He offers good feedback to help improve your work, he's really easygoing and always available to discuss assignments. He's also very goodlooking.
he is good teacher at first not but he grows on you ....this class makes you think and he provides positive feedback
Take the links
Mr. Tenney is nice, but he is blunt. It was fun to watch him pick on other students like a bully in HS, but he was never rude nor disrespectful. He tries to pick your brain by asking questions to help you draw your own conclusions about topics discussed in class, which is a good way of encouraging for you to think outside the box. Take the links.
At first, I couldn't stand Mr. Tenney. Through the grapevine, I heard he was a lawyer, so he liked to argue. I felt like my opinion didn't matter to him. Later on, his help with my papers really did help. attending class is crucial. I hope you enjoy him.
As a person he's not my favorite, but as a teacher he's so-so. He like the sound of his own voice, so if you don't pay that much attention you'll be fine. The book is a total waste of money, if you and a friend (or group of friends) are taking the class split the cost of the book and share it.
If you ever need help shoot him an e-mail or ask in class to get something clarified.
he is a super helpful man, that really enjoys what he does. he commits to you as a student 100% if you show interest. he is interested in the integrity of your work and will help you grow. recommend
Awesome class!
Professor Tenney speaks his mind and some people may not be able to handle his comments. Yet, if you are able to not take what he says personally, his class can greatly benefit you. He knows a lot about English and is ALWAYS willing to help his students out. He provides good office hours for you to stop by & also replies quickly through email.
Prof Tenney definitely knows his stuff. He focuses hard on critical thinking which helps when it comes to writing the essays. He may seem a little rude at times but it's nothing personal, that's just his approach. He made everything clear as to what he wanted to see in our papers. I took his themed course and would definitely recommend him!
He is a great professor. His grading is very easy and is more critical of the content rather than the spelling or grammar. Although his lectures may seem to never end I would still choose to take his class again.
had to drink a 5 hour to stay awake every class
Tenney seems a little harsh at times and his comments may be much for some, but he's a good teacher. He pushes u to think for yourself, which is very helpful. He goes into a lot of detail with feedback on essays. His ways of teaching pushes u to think in certain ways that will make u a better writer and he's a fair grader. Take his class!
Mr Tenney is really a great teacher overall. He is very blunt at times but that is just his personality. You should never take offense to what he says in the end he is really trying to help his students do well. He is very big on the abstract of things and grades more on the clarity of the work rather than the grammer. I would def take him again.
tenney is definitely one of the best professors at unlv. he is very blunt, but wants you to think critically. he's funny and I would definitely take him again if I had the chance! he knows his stuff and is a professor you'll miss!
Tenney is by far the best proffesor i have had so far. The way he approaches lesson plans are not as traditional, but yet you learn more and you come out the class a wiser person. Definitely would like to take his classes again.
If you like to do tons of critical thinking then this is the class for you.
He's a great professor and super helpful! I joined the class late and he spent an hour helping to catch me up on everything. Always open to questions and emails from students. He'll even let you send papers early and give you feedback. Not too tough of a grader either, and he is clear with what he expects from students.
The great thing about taking this class is that it is relatively easy. You can send him your essay before it is due and he will make comments and suggestions. He cares more about the content of your essay rather than the mechanics, and is a fair grader. However, I didn't learn a thing during the mandatory lectures that would help me with my papers.
Tenney is always willing to help you out if youre having any difficulties-hes a great teacher and his lectures may seem rather pointless but hes very lenient ¬ too harsh of a grader so I suggest taking him. He has a very dry sense of humor too so dont take anything he says personally. Tenney WANTS you to succeed, I highly recommend him.
A helpful professor who cares about his students. His humor is something not everyone will "get", but I definitely learned in this class on how to write properly. I recommend this because this professor will definitely be remembered.
I adore Mr. Tenney. He seems so intimidating, but he really cares for his students. He will work with you to help you as much as he can. He is very intelligent and accepts others' opinions and really makes you use your brain. Attending class every day will get you a really good grade. Mr. Tenney is always available. He is a real gentleman!
Mr. Tenney is a great teacher who will make you think and analyze more than you thought you ever could. That may sound like a bad thing but class discussions are very entertaining. This makes the class go by very quickly. I definitely recommend his class and there is not much homework.
Strong humor, I didn't like him at first but he grew on me. Don't take this class if you're sensitive to cuss words. You don't do anything in class besides listen to him lecture and write 4 essays.
LOVE him, so much respect for him. Funny, helpful and handsome. DON'T take his class if you're sensitive to cuss words.
Took him awhile back and he still remembers me and asks how I am doing. Great professor! Much respect for him and his work.
I enjoyed his class so much. Fun class discussions for my English Composition 101F. He has a great sense of humor. He is very approachable and clearly wants his students to be mindful of things.
Mr. Tenney was one of the best English teachers I had. He's hilarious but in a blunt way, so don't take his jokes personally. His class is just a lecture with some peer review. If you have the chance to have him as a professor, take him. He's helpful, nice, and unforgettable. You won't regret taking him.
Easy grader. Go to his office hours and he's extremely helpful. His lectures are confusing initially but once you get used to them they're clear. Keep in mind that literally everything he says has something to do with the topic. Literally everything. Go to class and do the work and he'll notice. Also he's a silver fox so that's nice.
During class discussions he often says "No one cares what you think" if you answer the question using I. Many of the things he says are pretty offensive so if you are a sensitive person like myself then don't take his class . English 102 is a required class, based on four writing projects and it's basically the same structure with every professor.
To the person underneath, you misunderstand Tenney. He said that the beginning that everything he does is for education, and never shares his personal beliefs. He teaches using the Socratic method; he will throw back your question so you think about it. It is better to realize something yourself than someone telling you. Excellent professor.
Professor Tenney is very blunt about what he expects in the class. Overall a good class to take for English 101
One of my favorite instructors at UNLV. Some of his examples/jokes may seem blunt, but they're all in good nature. Don't take him if you're sensitive to criticism. He provides really good feedback on papers and is helpful if you ask. If you have the chance, take him. I would take his class again without a doubt!
I can see why people have said he's a good professor, but I personally didn't like his teaching style. Sure, he'll make you think more about how/what you're writing, but for a required class like this, you're better off taking someone else. They all have to follow some what of the same structure anyways.
He was a great teacher who cares about his students and gives them time if they need it. If you show up to class then you will pass, he really just wants to know that his students care. Even if he seems like he doesn't care because he can come off a little scary. Great teacher but participation is a must!
In the beginning it seemed like none of his lectures had a point, and I often left class with a headache. But after a while it was clear that he was trying to teach you how to think for yourself. He has a unique sense of humor but always means well. He tends to grade more on content than grammar and is easily accessible. He truly helped my writing
He grows on you as a person but he's definitely not an easy A. I do however, admire his dedication to his students. He's always available to help you.
Great teacher but he definitely isn't the push over type. If you work extremely hard, you'll do well. He's always available to help you but he takes a long time to reply to emails. He throws out some funny sarcastic jokes in class so try not to take them too seriously
At the start this class will seem difficult. Tenney is definitely one of the hardest teachers I have ever had here at UNLV. If you truly pay attention to what he is saying and get used to the way he teaches you, you'll find a middle ground that you could work with. He does care about his students and tries to help you succeed only if you want it.
He is the best professor I have ever had! He definitely takes some getting used to because he is so blunt in class, but he taught me so much and I am a better writer because of him. If you are a sensitive person, I would not recommend taking his class as he can be very candid, but he truly cares about his students and the work that is being done.
He has a military style of teaching, w/c obviously where he came from. Sure he knows his stuff but he curses a lot in class and would make the bluntest remarks. He should be sensitive enough to know that there are people who are not used to the kind of linggo he's using.
If you are an English major, even if you write non-sense stuff in the writing projects, you are guaranteed an A in this class.
One of the best professors I've had.
Professor Tenney definitely has a different teaching method than most other teachers. He gets a little getting used to but after that, he is a great teacher. Professor Tenney gives great feedback and lets you know what you are doing wrong. He will definitely break a few of your bad habits.
Mr. Tenney definitely has a unique teaching style that takes getting used to. He is a super cool guy and can be very really funny during his lectures. He takes attendance so make sure you go, or your grade will suffer. He gives really good feedback on papers so that you know what to fix next time. 4 writing projects and he doesn't collect the "hw".
Dr. Tenney really helps his students become better writers. You will learn a lot if you pay attention and make a good effort to learn the material. I had Dr. Tenney during Summer session 3. With a super busy schedule and turning in work late twice, I still got a B. That said, you still need to learn the material. I highly recommend Dr. Tenney.
Scott Tenney is a decent guy. Hes a fair grader and cares for his students to improve. The only negative thing is I dont like his teaching methods.
I was able to take Mr. T in the summer and then luckily got his section for ENG 102. Definitely has a stern and thought-provoking teaching style. With my sarcastic personality, I really meshed with him and he's honestly one of my favorite educators throughout my life. Take his class you won't regret it. You will become a smarter person at the end.
I'm unsure if this was an "off" semester for him due to the pandemic, but I was beyond lost in this class. It's Nov and he's only graded 3 small assignments (and we've had MANY assignments turned in since). I've taken high level English courses and was forced to take this again (took it at previous U)--I've never been more lost in a basic course.
He wears his mask below his nose. Every. single. class. period. Besides that journals and a few essays make up your grade, so if you do poorly on essays you probably wont pass. His lectures dont make any sense. Youre better off to teach yourself the material from the book. Most of the course is just him saying why the book sucks. Class is easy.
I showed up to class and couldn't even believe what I was hearing. Scott Tenney is dismissive, rude, and confusing. He would often ask for student engagement in discussion and students would raise their hand and start "I think," and he would cut them off with "nobody cares what you think." Just rude stuff like that. Lectures are so confusing.
He is so outright with his views. It's an English 102 class. He makes everything so much more difficult than it has to be. He has a very military style of teaching which can be very difficult for students to understand. He grades so harshly. I have never received a score above an 80 on any of my papers which I felt very proud of. Don't take him.
He's a jerk. Work wise I imagine this class is of normal difficulty, but his teaching and behavior placed so much mental strain on it that I HATED this class. Didn't get anything out of this course except the mandatory credit.
He can be intimidating at first but he is not as bad as he seems. It takes time to learn his teaching methods. He cares for his students and grades based on effort, just put one the work for the writing projects and you will get at least a B. His class helped me become a better writer. Keep in mind that his lectures can be confusing.
I dreaded coming to his class every week. He was giving red-pilled free thinker rhetoric every class and would find a way to work his opinion on communism into every lecture someone like can we be serious rn... Some of his jokes were funny tho. He's never clear enough on what he wants from students from journals. Please don't take this class.
Tough grader for an English teacher who gives very ambiguous writing instructions. Attendance is mandatory and I dreaded coming to his classes because he lacks passion for his teachings. Has horrible body odor and the entire classroom smells. Takes off marks from your work without giving constructive criticisms on how you can improve your writing.
Tenney is very forthright about his opinions in class, which can be an issue for some, but if it isnt, you'll find him to be a solid professor. His lectures are fairly straight forward and he clearly outlines expectations on hw assignments. His grading is based on effort most times, and he will give thorough feedback.
Professor Tenney has a very unique style of teaching that is far from easy to understand. His lectures contain a lot of psudeo-intellecutal philisophical rhetoric and his hatred for commies. I understand that he is trying to make us understand how to critically think and how to combat against it, but he does it a very inappropriate manner.
He is a relatively easy grader, but you have to put effort into the writing. His feedback is rarely helpful. The lectures are exhausting to sit through, and not very helpful. Though it is still necessary to attend, every so often he will give useful tips in lecture, but you have to pay attention to catch them. Not a lot of assignments though.
Everything about his lectures and feedback made absolutely no sense. He grades lightly and workload is light, but i had so much stress for this class just due to confusion.
This professor 100% just wants people to pass his class. His lectures are excruciatingly boring and hard to understand. It's not always clear what he wants from your work. However, he's an incredibly easy grader. If you just do the work, even a little bit of it, you're going to pass. You would have to to try to be able to fail.
I have asked for help, and he keeps telling me no .He keeps using me as examples and i am very uncomfortable with that. He humiliates me in class. He will tell me what i am doing wrong but will not tell me what i am doing right.
If you need to take ENG 102 please take another course!! Professor Tenney's feedback doesn't help with the writing project at all. His lectures are boring and his notes don't correlate with the assignments at all.
DO NOT TAKE!!! Professor Tenney is a very unfair grader. He makes fun of students and humiliates them in front of the class. He clearly does not care about the student's wellness, if you are not in class you WILL fail. I missed a 2 classes during the semester and i lost points even after submitting a doctor's note. He also gives longer assignments.
Due to Prof. Tenney's teaching style, I am retaking this course with a different instructor. His "notes" and his lectures don't correlate and are often irrelevant to any assignments as he tends to throw subliminal comments at students' grades during them and doesn't respond to help. I found that my time and money were wasted taking this course.
Try to not get Scott Tenney as a professor if you are not strong in English. The lectures are very boring and confusing. He also says some pretty outlandish things that can be offensive. Not very many assignments, but he can grade kind of harsh on some assignments.
I thought this class had easy work, but terrible structure. Prof Tenney went on tangents that didn't truly have anything to do with the work, just some random concept that he thought was relevant (it wasn't). His rubrics seemed clear enough but when he graded, he made comments that weren't helpful at all but took off points. Would not take again.
He is a good teacher but very passive aggressive and overall a rude person. Has said misogynistic remarks to students and even yelled. You don't need the text book for this class. Get ready to visit the writing center for the semester it helped me out a lot!! Tough grader but clear on directions. Overall, I grew as a writer by taking his class.
Do not take this professor, you will regret it. Very boring lectures, not only that they are mandatory. He talks about the most random things that don't correlate to the subject. Take any other instructor.
Lectures every class that are very philosophical and metaphorical that make sense to no one. Prof. is a self-proclaimed "technophobe", so you may not use any technology in the class. Attendance is mandatory, and if you do not email him first for a make-up assignment, your grade will definitely suffer. If you can, avoid taking the class with him.
I personally loved this class. At first, I was adamant on his teaching style. The more classes I went to, the more I adapted to it and realized his lectures were heavy, but worth the time. He gave me great points of criticism which led me to get good grades for this class overall. When you go to Tenney's class, just be open minded!
Scott Tenney is a very strict professor and will humiliate his students in front of the entire class. He often went on unnecessary tangents about the most random topics. I had to drop the class because of his teaching style. Avoid taking his class if possible.
He is an English professor who communicates in a very confusing manner. Every assignment feels like a riddle you need to solve to get a decent grade. He's not a fan of technology, and makes that clear. He makes questionable comments occasionally during lectures. Though he seems strict and cold, he's can be quite nice if you communicate respectfully
Prof. Tenney is really not a professor at all, in every single one of his classes you are expected to teach yourself what he is trying to tell you. There is no lecture, the entire class is you trying to figure out what off topic idea he is talking about. He doesn't give feedback for anything unless its him telling you your wrong with no explanation
although I ended with a B, the class is an easy A. I would not recommend taking this professor simply due to the way he lectures. very hypothetical and theoretical style of speaking, doesn't make sense to any of the students in class. don't ask simple questions, he will passively call you a dumbass. attendance is mandatory, and does not allow tech.
His lectures are nothing short of incomprehensible and intentionally confusing. It's like he doesn't even know what his lectures are about, but he tries to make it seem profound. If you want a philosophy class disguised as an English one, this is your guy.
Dropped his class the first day, thinks this is the 1900s and bans technology, and will lock you out if your late even though your paying to be there. speaks very monotone and is boring making it hard to stay awake. Don't take him
this is honestly the worst professor i ever had, i got A's on all the projects but barely scraped by with a b, he literally yaps all class about the silliest stuff and he grades attendance so weird, i genuinely think bro just likes to hear himself talk, hate dude fr he needa get packed out ngl
if you like to listen to people talking about absolute nonsense this is the class for you. he talks for the whole time (which is fine) but goes on random tangents just to somehow tie it back to our objective.don't try to skip his class or it'll severely impact your grade. his feedback on assignments are really vague so you're on your own tbh
if u like hearing someone talk about absolute nonsense this is the class for you. he yaps about absolute nonsense but miraculously ties it back to the objective. he reminds me of agent 5.5 ngl. don't skip the class if you end up taking it (i'll pray for you if so) attendance is a huge part of the grade even though the lecture says otherwise.
Prof. Tenney deeply cares that students practice critical thinking within their works throughout the projects. He's vague at times, but it's because he wants us to think; if you at least try, he'll acknowledge it. (He'll give extra cred in HW for effort and if you ask questions in class). Lectures could be overly complex; not good if you're tired.
fair grader as long as you put in effort. if you like philosophical lectures then you would like him, but if not he's confusing to follow and talks a lot of nothing to reach a point he could've made in 5 minutes. he's still a great professor and gives good feedback. gives helpful pointers in class that should be listed on the criteria but aren't.
