I had him because phang broke her foot but lucked out. everyone sais cost is hard which is complete bull. amazing teacher, attendance helps, explains everything, just read the book and practice and youll be fine... although the rest of my class may not agree but teacher wise hes excellent, nothing to be afraid of ...A++ teacher
To anyone that has to take Cost he is the man!
great professor, really helps students and tries to explain the material the only problem is the final is departmental so its a killer no matter who you have but he is one of the better cost acc teachers at baruch i just hated that he kept saying there was gonna be a curve, there was none at alll
OMG he is Baruch's best kept secret. I heard nightmares about COST & its teachers but wow- its like this guy was heaven sent. He takes the time to answer your questions, emails & makes himself available to clarify anything you may need. Definetly take him, he will make this crazy class bearable & best of all UNDERSTANDABLE. I learned A LOT!!!
He is a great Prof!Take this class, highly recommended!!I got A on this class, but it wasnt easy. You really have to study and prctice.Read book so you know what it is about and then do as many exercises as possible. He is very good at explaining and helpful if you need him after class.hope this review helps.Get exams from previous years & study hard!
He makes this class harder than intermediate accounting. Exams r insanely hard. You need to learn tricks, and professor said learning tricks is more important than knowing concepts!?I solved 500+ practice problems, I was very confident, but on exam I had no idea what is going on. Guessed 50% of q; q are MC, but u need to show work.No curve! Crazy
Agree with below poster. Makes the exams extremely difficult for the graduate course. Many dropped out after the 1st exam. He doesn't curve & states that the book and its questions aren't reflective of the exam. Then what do you study from? Interm. ACC is easier than his class. I would REALLY avoid this professor if I can and not waste your time.
Agree with bottom 2 posters. I have no idea what the undergrads are talking about, this class is way too hard and he's not at all helpful. He makes the tests much harder than the practice tests and thinks it's normal to have a class avg of 71 on the first test. Class avg in a grad class is more like an 88. Avoid this guy.
He stands out at Baruch. Very intelligent and extremely knowledgable. Has the answer for you before you finish the question. And he is also very polite.Tests are a little tricky, but the subject itself is a little complicated as well. Needs a lot of work and practice.
Avoid professor. Stuck it through both midterms and still ended up doing awful, had to drop the class. Studied a great deal and thought I got an B on the tests and he must have tricks in each questions. Gives no practice problems and tests do not reflect level of difficulty of book or practice test. Lots of memorization.
This guy is a cost accounting GOD. Baruch seriously needs to give him a raise. Makes the material completely understandable. Lectures are so clear and helpful. You dont even need to read the book just go to class and take notes. This guy is seriously the best prof. I would def take him for other accounting classes if I could.
OUTSTANDING professor: his lectures are very clear and helpful; the amount of homework is limited (no quiz, no collected case); some test questions may be tricky but you can definitely get an A if you study enough. He is very helpful, polite, and considerate. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! One of the best accounting professors at Baruch!
This class is a weeder class, so leave it for the end. Quarter of the class dropped. As hard as intermediate accounting, but while professors like Byard and Nurnberg curve, Vandervoort does not. 50% of the people had less than 70% on MT; they were not stupid, he doesn't teach well, and he wants you to fail.
Great professor! The class is hard but Prof. Vandervoort takes time to explain anything you find confusing. As long as you are able to do homework problems and practice exams, you will have no problems on the exams (as hard as they are).
This guy should get a raise. I don't know why he works two jobs, he is a very good professor. Pay him more baruch. Anyways class is at night so that gives a lot of time to study. And all you really need are his slides. Just review them 15 min before class every class and your set.
The best! I repeat the best professor you can have for cost accounting. We all know cost accounting is sort of a weeder class so the departmental exams aren't going to be easy. This guy will make things more clear for you. No need for the text book because he has good slides and explains well. If he can't help you pass, I don't who can.
WARNING for those thinking of taking Vandevoort for 9811 in Summer 2012. I took him for 9811 in Summer 2011. HANDS DOWN the hardest exam I ever took in my life. And I've been at Baruch for 6 years. I failed his midterm. 1/3 of the class dropped. I'm taking 9811 right now with Cherny and getting an easy A. DO NOT TAKE VANDEVOORT. SAVE YOUR GPA.
Great professor. Explains super clear and knows how to teach. Cost accounting is more like math so if you read the textbook, struggle with the homework you should be fine. Those who give him bad rating I guess aren't good at math, it's not easy but he not only teaches well is love to teach!! Hard to find teacher like him!
Great professor. Lecture notes are all you need to study. The homework is helpful. He hands out practice tests that help you study. Hes available when you need. Fantastic professor. I would rather have him during a regular semester b/c he is a great teacher. Definitely worthwhile taking him in the summer.
Great teacher. Has the experience and knowledge to do a lot more than teach but decided to pass on the knowledge to future accountants. 2 midterms and 1 final which is non-cumulative. Attend all classes, do all homeworks and practice exams and you will get an A. Tests can be tricky but he is an excellent teacher so you will be well prepared.
Very good professor, 2 midterms and final, all tests are departamental, so you have to study previous exams are very helpfull, you don't need to buy a book, his slides are enough, he explains very well.
great! lectures make more sense then book, this class is hard! he is to the point,he puts up actual problems at beg of class, some actually showed up on test, make sure to get previous exams!! this is most crucial test is unlike any hw,class,or book problems, they cannot be solved if you havent seen them, find prev test this is the only way to study!
Two midterms, one final. All departmental. Connect homeworks and attendance are required. This class itself is very interesting but it's the department that makes the exams unbearably hard. It's possible to get an A but you need to have previous exams to study and practice off! He is a very good professor though!
He is the best professor. always avialable to help students. deinitely take him.
Top class professor. Genuinely cares for the students. Difficult class and he does his best to make sure students are prepared for the departmental exams. He is a Cost Accounting gem and Baruch is lucky to have him. Highly recommended!!
Amazing professor. One of the best that I had so far.He is very helpful and crystal clear. I learned everything from his slides, didn't use a textbook. Highly recommended.
Great professor. very helpful, gives a problem at the beginning and end of each class. attendance sheet is passed around every class. Attending will help you understand the subject better. the 2 midterms and final are departmental. practice will help you. the exams were much like the exercises at the end of the chapters. take him he is the best.
Don't waste time with other Professors. Your best chance of passing this class is with lots and lots and lots of practice and taking Prof Vandevoort. He explains topics clearly and gives helpful insight on what to expect on department exams. Also find friends who have old midterms, without them, there's no way to pass the class.
the best professor for cost! gives you enough examples so you really understand the material. very nice and tries his best to help his students!!
Easily the best professor for cost. He explains the material really well and clearly and gives examples similar to what will be on the exam.
He is THE BEST!!! Pay attention to the class lectures and do the practice problem. Tests aren't too bad if you can get hold of past exams but PRACTICE! I really enjoyed the class only because he was an amazing teacher! WOULD SOOO RECOMMEND!
GOOD PROFESSOR, HELPS YOU THE MOST HE CAN, HE PROVIDES YOU WITH ACTUAL PREVIOUS PRACTICES EXAMS. EXAMS ARE FROM THE DEPARTMENT, SO HE CAN'T HELP ON THAT; BUT HE WOULD DO THE MOST HE CAN TO HELP STUDENTS. I HAD TO DROP 2 TIMES BEFORE TAKING VANDEVOORT. HE HELPED ME A LOT. I GOT A.
The best Professor for cost accounting!! Of course you need to practice a LOT previous exams to pass. Also you need to read book before lecture. Professor explains material very well. I enjoyed the subject.
The professor is not involve in creating or grading the Cost Accounting Exams since they are departamental. That being said he will help you all the way during his office hours and after class. He responds to emails and gives a great lecture.
The prof goes through his .ppt slides in class which cover most of the material without opening the book. Mandatory homework(Connect+) for every chapter and attendance. MUST solve previous exams to pass midterms and the final. He is helpful in class and email but be prepared the exams are departmental. WORKSHOP is very useful! Great prof!!
This is a very difficult class that is run by the accounting department-so every section has the same hw&tests. This is the 2nd time i took this course;VandeVoort is a MUST TAKE for this course. He will guide through every concept and explain how the test may ask on a certain topic. Practice questions at start and end of class to prepare for tests.
He lectures really well. I just wish he could've done more problems in class. Very knowledgeable and friendlyopen to questions. Would definitely take again. Study hard! The homework can get overwhelming, especially during the summer session.
Best cost accounting professor you could have in Baruch!!!
Mr. VanderVoot is the clear choice when taking Cost because he will emphasize what really matters. It is a very challenging class independent of the instructor, but at least his teaching style keeps you focused when in class. Welcome to THE Baruch "Accounting Bottleneck Effect Class" and may the curve be in your favor!
Prof. Vandevoort is very patient to explain the same question again and again when students need. He talks fast, make sure to stop and ask him if you don't understand. His lecture is very clear. However, you need to do your own work. This is a departmental exam, taking his class doesn't mean you can get A. Ask yourself how much effort you put on
Yes, the professor gets great reviews for the right reasons; he is knowledgeable, clear, passionate ab accounting, funny, just perfect. Pay attention to everything he says in the class, work individually, ask him what you don't understand, and I don't see any reason why not get a good grade for cost accounting. Enjoy the ride :)
A great hard working professor who goes out of his way to give students the best educational experience. Very considerate and passionate with teaching.
best acc 3200 professor ever!
This class is very hard and it's department exam so professor have no clue what will be in the exam him self because of his rating all the students wants to take him but that may ba unfortunate for you because as a result there is a lot of compiation . Do ur self a favor take a class that have less compilation so that u can get a better curve
Stay away and save ur self
Do you wanna stay in Accounting program? If yes, then stay away from him. I took class with him, and I kicked out from the program.
Avoid him.
He is a good guy, But he is always late on class and rushes through lecture and let us go early home! He assumes that we all learned everything in an hour. I would not recommend him.
He never discusses any problem, in class he goes over his slides what you can do at home. Never cares about the attendance and doesnot even do reviews before the exam. Not helpful!
He tries to help students but the Exam is departmental so nothing he can do about it. But atleast he can help us solving the practice exam. BTW practice exam has nothing to do with the actual test. Actual test is 10x harder than practice exam.
This is a nightmare guy. He always helps students who enroll in other class. Never care about you. Moreover, he is very rude if you ask a question.
Cost acc is a tough class so you need to put in A LOT of studying and practice. I was registered for another class and still attended VandeVoorts evening class since seats were available. He explains the topics very well and didn't move on until everyone was on board. He's honestly the reason I passed this class with an A-. ATTEND COST WORKSHOPS!!
Take him, you will regret. People in other classes curves grade, his class NO WAY. He don't really care about you, if you don't understand,he said because you don't speak English as the first language. He RESISTED you to send him email !!!! Discrimination !He said exams are made by the department, he can't do anything as an excuse to skip answer
He is rude when someone emails him and asks question in class.
Best Professor for Cost Accounting. You will love his class. All exams are departmental so there is nothing that professor can tell the students but he is very helpful and always gives good feedback to prepare his students for the test. He is awesome and you will enjoy the class.
An unfavorable professor, Not helpful ! I got my A from all my acc class, except this class. He ruined my GPA. He doesn't know how to teach that is a problem to compare other excellent professors. Not rational at all and have some bias. But workshop tutor totally helped and was so nice to teach than him. I don't enjoy this class!
Overrated
He gives me an awful learning experience!
Seriously overrated. Holds grudges, he's biased & frankly doesn't know how to teach. Just reads off of his slides and never posts solutions for slides problems to BB, which is one thing that actually might be helpful!! Test are departmental so there is no reason to take him unless you like being bored in (EVENING) class & than self-study anyway.
I did avg on the first exam, started going to his office hours and got a 100 on the 2nd MT. He is always in his office before class and is always willing to help out. Very patient man, I was in his office before every class with questions and not once did I get the impression it bothered him. His lectures are clear and precise and offers insight.
Cost accounting is one of the most competitive accounting classes at Baruch. It is hard and exams are departmental, but professor Scott is the best for this subject. He always posts few past exam questions during the classes and explains how to solve them. He cares students and is responsible. Remember, it is departmental. He is your best choice.
He is the best prof in cost. You would not regret if you take him. This class is hard, but not as bad as people say. Just do as much practice as you can and you would be fine. There is a huge curve, as long as you score slightly better then the average on the test, you will get min grade of B. If you are good in math this class would be easy.
He explains the topics in a very logical manor which helped a lot. Listen when he explains different ways they could ask a question on the exams, he gives great insight. Read the text book before class and use the lecture as reinforcement . Get your hands on past exams and you'll do great. In my opinion he's your best choice for this course.
He is only one professor that ruined my higher GPA at Baruch college. I actually can get better grade on exam, but he never be helpful especially when I asked questions. I would recommend you to take other cost professors who really dedicated to explain lectures and pass exams
Avoid this professor. He isn't a nice professor. He let my GPA go down. I don't learn something in his class because he just use PPT in his class. Don't take his. He don't replay my question in email.
Best choice for cost accounting! Great professor!!!
He is the best Costing prof at Baruch rush to take his class. All 3 exams are Deptal but he will prepare you very well. If u want to do well, read the text book twice or thrice; read book chapters and PPT before u go to class and write notes in class. I visited him a lot in his office and he advised me on the best methods to solving questions.
He is a true professional and he treats all students with respect. He teaches with passion and very caring. He solves a lot of questions every week. Listen to his lectures and take notes. Ask questions in class and if you have any difficulty, see him after class or go to his office before class. He is good. Register for his class very early.
My advice to you is listen to his lectures because he will tell you/ give you about 3-4 free qtns for every exam and try to finish hw 1 week before every exam. He solves review qtns before exams and gives you direction. Read the book and PPT before you go to class and write notes and practice a lot of past exams. I got B-. U can do it so fear not.
Its my 1st time taking cost and I dont feel the hype around this class because Scott's teaching style is amazing. He makes you understand concepts and the different ways questions can be asked. He shows many sample questions just like exams and shortcuts/tricks to solve them. Exams and HW (2 connects/week) are departmental so its out of his hands.
Honestly, he is just OK. He won't help you with Departmental Tests because he will make you spend hours on the problem and say that that's the way you learn. I felt like ACC3200 weekly workshops were way more helpful than his lectures which are basically him reading off slides. Very intelligent and good man, but overrated and not that helpful.
Dont take him!!! Save your GPA and take someone else if you can.. exams were really hard in his class.
This class is tuff with this prof. 3 exams all were hard. Take someone else.
This class is really tuff and hard!! Prof teaching style was off and must read the text to get a better understanding. Take someone else if you can.
He's a very smart man but I'd give him a 6.5 or 7/10 at teaching. Some lessons are easier to follow than others. I thought the slides were very helpful. Each class he gives you examples of the type of questions you will see on the exam which is awesome. He is really nice and respectful but that has nothing to do with doing well in cost.
The most fair class that shows who is interested in ACC and who wants a degree only by learning the answers from TB! Who is interested - will get A or B! It's a departmental exam. Practice as much as you can and you will do it. Material is easy but problem calculations need some practice. Lots of HW. Best Professor in ACC major! Listen in class! :)
Very polite, has a calm and relaxed personality which helps you not get stressed out over cost. He gives good lectures & explains concepts in an understandable manner. Always available outside of class. Make sure you study 10-15 hrs a week because no matter how good he is its dept exams. HW & powerpoint examples are a joke exams are hieroglyphics.
Never had an Accounting professor like him. He is the BEST of them all. His teaching style was very clear and understandable. I wish he could teach all the accounting classes and I could take them all. Accounting courses are never easy, you must work hard for it. Ask professor question if something isn't clear to you he will explain to you again :)
Practice!!!! Professor Vandevoort is caring and amazing at explaining things but you have to do this on your own majority of the time. He is available to answer questions. The test is departmental and the average is usually a failing grade. you must practice, do the HWs, you need every advantage you can get. I would take him again!
One of the best in the ACC department. His teaching style is very clear and he shows you how to approach and solve test level questions. Email responses can be slow (im blaming covid) but he gives good responses and really helps when he can. Overall, glad i took him and i highly recommend
Take Him !!! He is one of the best professor i have ever taken. Took him for acc 3200 and acc 3000. As long as you try your best, you will get the grade you deserved.
Avoid!
Awesome Professor! His teaching style is great, he listens carefully to everybody and answers any questions. He gives some examples in class that are really helpful in a preparation for exams. The class is tough, exams are tricky, but he does everything to ensure you do great. To pass this class, solve lots of problems and go to SACC - it helps!
One of the best Professors in the Accounting department. Lectures are very helpful and he makes one of the most difficult courses in accounting much easier to understand. Exams are departmental and the material covered in class can be difficult but he prepares his students extremely well. His lectures and SACC reviews prepare you for the exams.
THE BEST accounting professor at Baruch. His reviews before the tests are really helpful, he takes the previous semester's tests and reviews each question. The tests are departmental but are curved based on how all the cost accounting classes do. His students usually do the best compared to the other classes.
He is the best. Take him and you won't regret
The professor is a nice guy, but his teaching is overrated and he is overhyped. He goes really fast and started ending class like 30 mins early every class for the last two months of the semester. Mainly self study class either way though so good luck whoever you take for cost.
The best professor I had taken so far. Cost is meant to be hard and the three tests are all departmental. Go to sacc workshop each week and you will be fine
Cost is a hard class. There definitely needs to be self studying to be done. I didn't go to the SACC workshops and solely relied on the textbook and the class lectures to get the grade that I got in this class. Make sure to do the practice exams he gives out and pay close attention to his lectures to succeed!
He sucks! Take anyone else, but him.
Great professor. Very straight forward during lecture and gives practice problems every lecture to help prep for tests. Attend lectures for general understanding and go to SACC workshops for their problem sets. Put in the effort and you'll be okay, this cost class usually gets a generous curve anyway.
Awesome professor for students that want to learn in a logical way. He is the best at lecturing, explains the material in a very easy and digest-able way. Loads of HW for the class, but the professor is a 1000/10.
Amazing professor. Explains content very well, very organized and willing to answer questions. The subject isnt easy but he makes it understandable and slides are very helpful. Tests are fair, final is non-cumulative, and homework is on connect
He's a nice guy but can't teach at all. He speedruns the lectures like it's some sort of game. He also just jumps around with the questions when reviewing for tests. He's honestly horrible at teaching and you have no choice but to learn everything on your own.
He is a really good professor, if you come prepared and ready to learn you will do ok. Bring a print out of the slides and take notes on them during class. 3 exams each non cumulative, homework for each chapter (can get up to 60 pts off and still get full credit). The course is graded on stdrd curve. do better than evryne else and youll do well.
Cost is hard but professor doesn't really teach much better than reading the textbook. Since the exams are departmental, I am only rating his teaching style and helpfulness and not the coursework load. Here is a tip for future students: Attend SACC workshops. I didn't do well on first exam but attending workshop boosted my grades.
Great professor and a fantastic guy. Recommend taking this class.
Cost Accounting is said to be one of the more difficult accounting courses at Baruch. Im so happy I decided to take this course with this professor. His lectures were easy to follow and b4 exams he held reviews n gave techniques for answering problems. Lectures coupled with SACC reviews helped. Highly recommend this professor!
Probably the best professor you'll take for accounting in the school, no lie. The class itself is overwhelming but we don't have any hard-core assignments, just connect and 1 group assign. Scan a QR code for attendance, speaks loud & clear, and is very easy-going. Great class.
You have to try really hard to fail this class. All exams (which are just 2: 1 midterm and 1 final) are both online.... so use your notes or connect. Speaks clearly, legible, and wants you to actually understand. even if you don't attend class (that's 2% of your grade) you'll still pass.
HWs are very helpful, connect allows to check your answers and there are multiple attempts. Midterm and Final were online, and I pretty sure he might've slightly curved the overall grade. He is a great choice, very approachable, explains everything well and is transparent with you. Even makes jokes rarely, awesome guy!
He is good at explaining while reading off the slides but honestly, even you can do that by self-studying his slides at home. Basic concepts were explained in class while on test/homework assignments, I found them twice the difficulty. I would recommend taking another professor.
His lecture are just perfect in my opinion. Cost is hard no doubt, but he makes every topic so digestible for us to comprehend. Homework itself helps you understand the topic, while the practice exam helps us prepare the actual exam and do well. However, its all about commitment and finding strategies to solve problems. Take him, you wont regret it
Prof. VandeVoort does a great job of "teaching to the test", but he doesn't go in-depth about the "why" so that may not be beneficial to all. Each class he goes through possible test questions to prepare you to think about content in a different way and warns you about common tricks. He does run through slides quickly, so you leave 20 min early.
Attendance is taken, but you can miss up to 5 classes and receive full credit. Hw deadlines (Tues and Fri) are awkward, but you get 10 check my work on each problem. Review the slides and understand each step of the practice problems. The 2nd midterm was voted the hardest, and Chap. 8 was the most difficult for me, so use SACC tutoring when needed!
Prof. VandeVoort made Cost Accounting (an incredibly difficult course) digestable and easy to follow. His lectures were extremely insightful and he gave us many tips on how to go about working through difficult problems on our exams. I truly am so grateful that he was my Cost professor, I don't think I would have done as well if he hadn't been.
Overall, an ok experience.
He himself is a good professor, he's chill and will just do his thing. He takes attendance but won't get you on it. You can go if you want. It basically felt like a online course, you just did the assignments and exams online and you're done. Beware of the exams, I messed up on those and got a C.
Please do all homework and excel project , I did horrible on the exams (especially on final) but thanks god I almost did all homework and SAM project and end up with B
He's honestly a good professor I think the course is just difficult in general. You can tell he cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. He gives good shortcuts to solve the problems, but like I said I think the course is just hard in general. 2 midt, 1 final, hw every Tues and Fri, 1data analytics project. I recommend taking
