Seems like his other English courses are hard from what others say but he is pretty easy for Creative Writing I. He gives reading assignments from the book each class but you are never quizzed or tested on them. I got an A.

Shouldn't be a teacher! Arrogant& biased. Beats students down. I was hoping to learn more about writing (esp about lit)but so much time was spent on poetry there was no time left for anything else. Isnt clear on what he expects in an A paper. Got best grade (B) when I wrote paper the night before.

Unfortunetly I took this class my first semester of college. There were times where I was so offended I was on the verge of tears. He was arrogant, rude, and it didn't seem like he wanted anyone to succeed. I believed I had decent writting skills before I took this class, usually receiving A's on papers, I barely got C's, just like everyone else.

Grading is unfair. Makes everyone feel stupid about everything they write. I know he's supposed to be critical but he totally smashed my writing. I didn't know what the heck to do! He is really down to earth though, but doesn't really care about the students.
He's a jerk to all of his students. He thinks that he's some sort of God of English but all he is is a cocky little man who doesn't know how to teach.
Scott is a bit tough, (thus everyone's terrible ratings) but is an awesome proffessor for somebody who wants to be challenged.

While he appears to have a cocky nature and doesn't care about the students, nothing could be further from the truth! For English students who want to be challenged, and not just get another A, then take his class! His CW I class was not structured as well as Colleen Webster's is; however his in class writing and outside projects made you think outside the box. He also challenges you to think about why you hold certain views on Literary works, which is wonderful if you plan on Grad School
4 words - DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!! he is degrading, and makes just about everyone who takes his class feel stupid. and he wont think twice about humiliating you in any way possible. he is the worst teacher i have ever had and i am lucky i even passed the class (ive always been good at english) he is unclear and his grading is HORRIBLE!! Great teacher!! I signed up for 102 with him because he was such a great 101 teacher. He makes things very clear as to how he wants them. He is very humorous and needs to be taken with a light hearted attitude. Don't take his sarcasm to heart he is only making fun.

If you have a chance to take scotty, go for it. He will give you a hard time and wants you to work hard. His favorite literary device is sarcasim. If you cant take it, and your looking for another easy A rather than learning, dont take scott. Otherwise, he's a great teacher and you'll learn more than you ever sought out too, if you actually try.

I thought he was a great teacher! My girlfriend warned me about him at first, told me I would either love him or hate him. He is sarcastic and makes you work. Seeking his help outside of class is very beneifical, as he will not let you leave until you understand what you came to get help with. One of my fav teachers
i had him a while ago...He is an idealist, and is passionate about his teachings. He was also helpful when I had to miss classes, and funny.
He is so rude. Do not ask stupid questions! He gives extremely hard tests and bases papers on the grammer and works cited not so much the content! An extremely hard grader...DO NOT TAKE FOR PHILOSOPHY 101!!!!
Don't even think about taking his class. He is the most ridiculous teacher i have ever had. He is rude, and belittles his students and considers nothing. I had to miss a few classes for a funeral and he told me i needed proof..? Save your self the trouble and take another professor
You either love him or hate him....he has the humor of Dane Cook and my class LOVED him, even though it's hard to get a good grade...you really have to work at it, but it's worth it. I'd take him again...very sarcastic but sweet...you HAVE to have a sense of humor :) (and I don't care what anyone says...he's cute in his own way...awww!)
Alright, if I'm now at a nationwide recognized university. I received A's in all english classes starting in middle school continuing through my first semester at HCC. Unfortunatly, I signed up for English 102 having Scott West as my professor. I'm not about to graduate from college and he still, hands down, holds the record for most horrible teach
The greatest downside to this was that he graded this philosophy class as an English teacher. Class discussions were often interesting and he had a broad range of knowledge to share, but he clearly had an agenda. The last section was on ethics and the treatment of animals and he had us read animal rights literature without an alternate view.

i liked him a lot. he is a good teacher and has a lot of knowledge. he also has a good sense of humor! i had him for english 101 and purposely took philosophy so i could have him as a teacher again. he can be kind of sarcastic, but he is funny and will help you if you need help and dont slack.

Scott West's class is not fun. Be prepared for reading quizzes on the assignments most classes and lots of studying. Half my class dropped out after the midterm and West accused at least 3 people in my class of plagiarism on their research papers, thus giving them an F. He's difficult to get along with sometimes and isn't always the nicest guy.
I dont see what all the hype is about Mr. West being difficult and mean. He is an awesome teacher and has a great sense of humor! as long as you do your work & try your best you'll pass! don't be scared to take him he isnt as bad as everyone says :].

West is a horrible teacher. for our midterm and 1st paper he gave his expectations after the papers were turned in. he has no point system he just gives out grades. he nit picks everything and is unclear about his grading methods. one girl even went to the english department twice, got her paper approved by them and got an F. do not take him!
Drop his class, had him as a replacement teacher at the beginning of the semester. Unclear on paper requirements, and his grading is hard on citations.He will say you plagiarized a paper with minor citation errors and automatically give you an F for the first paper. Or not explain citations and expect them.

I have taken Mr. West for Philophy. He is really funny and the class was really eady if you ask me. You have to read the materials amd make sure you have a understanding of what is going on, but I think tha he is a favor professor and he is really funny! In order for you to understanding the material attendance is best

it seems like everyone who had him for english hates him, but for philosophy he is great. he's a real teacher, so you have to do reading and think outside of class; as well as pay close attention in class. His tests aren't bad if you put time in studying. He makes relates abstract ideas to things everyone can understand like the matrix. love him!
West was very funny. I liked the class a lot. He's a hard grader so you really need to put time into your writing. We'd have conferences for papers a lot instead of class. It was helpful but I think I wouldve liked it more if we had like "workshop" days where we worked on stuff during class,it was hard only having 15 min.but He made the class fun:)
I'm taking creative writing w/ him & never had I had a worse teacher for the job. He teaches completely from the book (which is unclear, with a stuck up author who asks you to write about your childhood every practice) West loves to hear the sound of his own voice and talks for an hr then 20 min is spent doing a practice from the book.
while i thought he was a jerk the whole semester, the last few classes i sought help, he was really nice to me but, he seems to only make connections with students who are really into the theme of the semester. if you didnt know about old hollywood, then you were pretty lost i thought i was a really great writer til took this class; hes a challenge
Prof West is the worst teacher Ive had at HCC. He loves the sound of his own voice. If you dont say what he wants you are WRONG. He expects 4yr college work. His theme and book selection sucks. Be prepared to read everyday and be prepared to write long, drawn out papers about bs. He tells his students "no one ever gets A's in my class."
I busted my butt in this class and did all the readings TWICE as well as researched them online to make sure I knew and understood the material before class. I got a B but felt like I deserved an A. He grades hard on his papers and he is very liberal in his views. If I had to do it again, I'd take the class with a different professor.
This was the hardest English class Ive ever had, he expects very high quality work from his students, this class was very stressful. Even though mr west was humorous and joking at times i would not take another class taught by him.
One of the worst English teachers I've ever had. I'm a very good English student and took AP English my senior year of high school. I found his class very unclear and difficult. He gets pissed off easily if no one knows an answer to his questions. Definitely wouldn't take another class with him.
I honestly can say that Prof. West was a very good teacher. He's intimidating, but nice & as long as you do what you're asked & you do the work you'll be fine. I was worried before I took this class but he's actually a very good teacher.
Unless one's trying to acquire your master's degree, do not take this professor. After the first paper, he grades as if you're in graduate school. I'm majoring in engineering and mathematics and have a cumulative GPA 3.80, which includes my C in his class. Moreover,in class, he will just rant about nothing the whole period.
Professor West is a hard teacher, but I think it comes from his love of English and materials. He is always willing to sit down with you and discuss what you need to do in order to improve your work. He seems very intimidating, but unless you are just showing up to take a mandatory course, you will find he is very interesting. Made me a Poe fan.
Hybrid class. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This was a creative writing class and he was very encouraging, and not negative or critical. Still he offered alternatives to weak areas of your writing. Peer critiquing was wonderful. He ensured people actually read your work and had useful comments. Pushed me to stretch myself as a writer. Excellent teacher.
This teacher was very hard at times. Every time you asked a question, not give a direct answer and make the student feel like it was the wrong answer. Although he was tough, he would try to correct your mistakes, but he would not make clear what he actually wanted. Overall he was a pain, but fair teacher when it came to grading.
Honest and fair but hard, would not take his class again. I felt pretty stupid by the time he was done grading my paper and often wondered how I tested into English 101.
He is the toughest grader that I have ever encountered at HCC. He has wayyyy too high of standards for his students. Also is really tough on citations and making sure things are to the book. He likes to go off on long rants on irrelevant topics in class also. I would NOT recommend him to anyone.
I cried about 3 times because of this class throughout the semester. Very critical, doesn't clearly explain his critiques. Made me feel like he didn't want me to succeed, didn't consider all my effort and dedication. Willing to help over office hours or email but still very difficult.
He is one of the best professors I've had so far. He is very tough on grading but that is because he wants you to put in your full effort. He is always there to help you if you need it. If you take his class and are struggling, then ask to schedule an appointment to see how you can do better.
I took Professor West for two writing classes and benefited greatly from both. You tell he loves to teach, especially writing. I would take more courses with him. If you come to class prepared and willing to work you will succeed.
Work with the rubric and you'll succeed. He's obviously super bright. It's about meeting the course objectives. Keep your appointments.
DIdn't enjoy this guy whatsoever. His English 101 class is poorly structured and you on top of that, the writing assignments are pointless because he cares more about the citing than the actual content of the paper.
There was always something wrong with your papers even if you followed his rubric to a t. He is a nit picker. Also when you do the MLA format no matter what you were wrong. Good luck
Worst teacher I have ever had in my life. If you do not agree with his opinions you are wrong. He loves the sound of his own voice. You are also never aloud to chose a topic to write about. He grades as if you where an English major going for your masters. This is Harford not Harvard. I would never recommend him and I highly advise you transfer.
I think Professor West gets a bad rap because he can be a tough grader and actually makes you work for your grade, but he is an excellent teacher and very helpful. It seemed many of the students in my class were just not educated enough in basic college level writing to succeed in research writing and therefore blamed West for his grading methods.
I took Philosophy and a few English courses from Scott West almost ten years ago. Even after transferring to a four year school, he remains one of my favorite professors. If you don't want to put in effort in college, you might as well continue flipping burgers. I used to keep score in class, I got a point for every time I answered correctly.
Professor West expects all writing assignments to be done correctly, citing, grammar, references, formatting, etc. If you are looking for an easy A, don't take his writing classes. If you are trying to grow as a student, he challenges you and is very helpful in the process. Great sense of humor and charismatic way of teaching.
CAUTION!!! STAY AWAY.... IF YOU KNOW BETTER, YOU WILL DO BETTER AND NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.... This professor is a very tough grader, and do not explain explain exactly what he expects. The tutoring center does not like helping you with any of his writing assignments, because they do not know what he wants. Professor West is very condescending.
Professor Scott was HILARIOUS and I can tell he knows his stuff! Definitely a hard grader though. You could participate in discussion, do the research, and write the papers and he'll STILL find something to take points off from. You WILL have to work for a good grade. Anyway, I still liked him. He was really funny and I learned a lot.

If i could rate him a zero, I would. This man got on my nerves from the get go. He will answer your question with a question. He's a tough grader-- like this is some Ivy league school. You have to calculate your grade for yourself too. If you sign up for his class, drop it and find a new professor. He's rude and condescending. I Don't recommend him
Run away from this teacher. Switch out of this class. He was absolutely horrible. I do not understand how HCC keeps him on as a teacher. He is the reason kids drop out of college. I had him for english 101 and he does not help you. He grades hard with no advise. Worst experience with a professor in school I have ever had.

Mr. West is a kind guy but he does not believe in grade inflation. "If you get a C in my class you're doing well". I would say save yourself some stress, it's just community college.
Don't listen to "Even if you follow his rubric exactly he still finds something wrong with it", how many English professors are just handing out easy A's? English is my worst subject. Ever. Papers don't come easy for me at all. But he helped me and challenged me. Citing your sources are the easy points so learn how to do it, it fairly simple.
I wish I could say kind things, but I found his rubrics vague, and his standards almost mysterious. He will give vague rubrics, and then grade on hidden standards. He's a little pretentious too, but that's the cherry on top of the worst English class I've ever taken. It doesn't help when he leaves passive aggressive comments on essays.
I learned absolutely nothing in this class. Unless you count anxiety and stress as something. He rants on about random things in class that have nothing to do with anything you should be learning. Doesn't clearly explain what you should be doing for your papers. Gives you bad grades just because. Doesn't teach to help you to become a better writer
If you don't plan on attending every class then don't bother signing up for this class. Professor West said if you attend every class and actively participated and had a borderline grade that he would bump you up. But he takes English very seriously, our first paper topic was on how to write a paper using examples from an academic article. Yikes
I'd say a 3/5 but for an English 101 teacher and the supposed "open-forum" that English should be I was not allowed to write about a certain topic because he held "personal (political) beliefs" against it even though it fit the main papers criteria, his intro paper and final exam were very hard and vague but the main paper itself is pretty smooth.
Okay look, yes he's a tough grader but that's because he has college level expectations. So many students half-butt there way through classes and then they get to West and are upset that he grades them accurately! If you get a C in his class, you earned it. He took the time to explain corrections when asked. He is intelligent and intense.

West's nebulous grading criteria was the source of so much anxiety in my life that I feel compelled to advise anyone who might be contemplating taking this course. In a word: don't. Scott West is probably the worst professor that Ive had so at Harford Community College. He creates these things called formal discussions and the prompts are completely irrelevant to what we discussed, learned, and are learning in class.
He grades papers so harshly and just expects us to know everything without actually teaching us anything. He never really taught my class APA so I struggled with that and would get marked down. If you think Im bad at writing then youre wrong I got a B in ENG 101 so clearly this professor doesnt know how to their job. I recommend staying far away
Grades hard but you will learn how to do things correctly. The effort you put into the class will reflect your grade. Hes available to help those struggling. You will work hard but its college and you will learn a lot.
Professor West is a harsh professor. His lectures last until about half way through the semester and then you are on your own for the research paper he assigns. He grades super toughly, I worked extremely hard on essays and didn't receive above a C.

Professor West is a good instructor. Any negative feedback on here is probably due to the fact they didn't get a grade handed on a silver platter and the sense of entitlement is ridiculous. This is college, he teaches a college course, it's up to us as students to learn the material. If you want to learn and improve take Professor West!
Professor West is truly the worst professor at Harford Community College and his supervisor knows it. He is available outside of class but will not answer questions on assignments when asked. He is arrogant, condescending and flat out rude. If he is your only option to take for graduation, wait a semester and get in with someone else, its worth it.

I agree with almost every review on here. very demeaning, rude and not helpful at all. I asked for feedback on a research paper several times. After he graded it he left a list of incorrect things that he took points off for but NEVER told me to fix when I sent him the drafts. If you can wait to take the class with a different teacher, DO IT.
This class has been the worst class that I have ever taken. Before taking his class i came to this page to check his rating... boy they were right. I was trying to take a class during summer to graduate earlier but that was a terrible choice. He says that his average for grading is C.... So he just set up students for failure since the beginning
West does not see that this is an elective course; meaning it is not required. ANYONE can take this course, and he grades like you are an English Major. Don't waste your time taking any classes with him; no matter how closely you follow his suggestions, nothing will please him. Rubrics are so unclear it is laughable what his feedback is.
Every mention of the final exam (including the syllabus) implied it was a written exam. Last minute, he assigned a paper instead. Its as heavily weighted as the research paper, and we have 3 days to complete it. 1000/1000 points in the course are subjective, and he tears you apart for every small error. He deducts points with no explanation.
Prof West's English 101 course was very difficult and lacked structure. As someone who needs rubrics and specific scoring agents to be successful in a class, I found this course hard because there was no way of knowing why points were deducted, and no way of knowing what to strive for. Prof West, while accessible outside class, is snarky & rude.
West was probably the worst professor I've ever had at Harford. While he was accessible outside of class, he was passive aggressive and rude. When giving back grades on papers, he would tear you apart for everything little thing you messed up, and make passive aggressive comments to make you feel stupid. His grading is not clear. Avoid if you can!
He is THE worst teacher I've ever had. He is demeaning and rude. His grading methods are unclear and never the same from one paper to the next. On the first day of class, he bragged about the fact that he rarely gives anyone an A. Most people get a C. Not sure why he was almost proud that he sucks at his job so much students are unable to learn.
Gives little to no help. Has gotten rude with me over email when I asked for help over an assignment, as he did with many other students in the class. Doesn't explain assignments very well yet, is a tough grader. Many comments left on my assignments have been very degrading and did not have any constructive comments on what I could do better.

Very tough grader, and as the reviews state, can be considered condescending and rude with feedback. Has detailed rubrics and if you follow, you can obtain a C which is the best you can hope for. I am a 4.0 student and had to accept a C in this class. That being said, I absolutely came out a better writer. Easy to access outside of class though.

Professor West is hands down one of the WORST teachers I have ever had. Hes very rude, grades very strictly, and he just makes class miserable. The professor is one of the most challenging English instructors I've met. He won't help students fix their paragraphs and don't understand any topics as he is confusing. Just retake English class with a better instructor.
Very unclear instructions, unnecessary workload, you have to teach yourself. short time to work and submit.
When I need guidance, I reach out in email. That is the only way since this is an online course, but out of the four emails I have sent he does not respond. This leaves me with confusion and not being able to complete the assignment fully, and then failing the assignment. He does not provide good feedback and does not seem to care.

Any feedback he gives is demeaning, discouraging and isn't helpful at all. Please take this course with any professor BUT HIM, if you wish to succeed.
Whenever I asked for help or guidance on writing a thesis or even coming up with a topic. He would rephrase it and make it more confusing. His critism neverhad any sugessions on how to make it better. In lectures, he would always go off topic and confused people even more when trying to relate it to writing.

This professor was by far the worst professor I have ever had, and is simply someone who is not passionate about teaching nor is he someone who cares about his students and does not care to help u. Everything everyone has said about him is true, please if you want to keep any sanity just don't take his class especially the comics class.
This professor is very challenging. He provides little guidance and feedback. However, tools like unstuck study and the textbook can help you navigate the workload. Just be prepared to put in a lot of independent effort.
Worst professor. Stay away. Never take class with this professor. If you do, be ready to not be appreciated for your work.
Terrible teacher, graded incredibly hard and had unclear instructions. A mandatory textbook that is expensive.
Here's my experience: I overheard him sarcastically talking to another instructor in the hallway that he was a month behind grading and has not prepared a lesson in years. He didn't know I was in his class while standing there. Seems more focused in being in a union and getting more money for himself rather than doing his actual job. Dropped.
Honestly he's very forgiving about late assignments, at least online. I emailed him more than twice for him to regrade an assignment that was late, and it was done within 3 days.
A large portion of your grade lies on just a few assignments and papers. The papers that you write are long, extensive, follow a tough rubric, and have tight deadlines. You will fall behind if you do not stay on top of the work all the time. He does not give great feedback in general. However, he is lenient when it comes to late assignments.
very condescending and tough grader
Grading criteria is nonexistent, he gives only vague commentary as feedback. Information that is provided holds little relevance to the actual assignment of the week. Professor is obviously passionate about the topic, but not teaching the material. This was the first year he's providing this course, and I unfortunately got stuck experiencing scuff.
