his tests are ridiculously hard and he goes at hellish 1 chapter-a-week pace.
the worst teacher i've ever had...he dances around the room...what a schizo...
Tests have tricky questions, covers the same as a HS chem course in a semester
worst chem teacher for people who don't want to be completely bored
Tests are very tricky even though he says they are not.
This guy is lame. His tests are hard and he goes way too fast. You might think it is easy at first, but then it gets hard and there is way too much homework.
Doesn't clearly answer questions and lectures are hard to follow. Exams are easy if you can interpret what he's trying to ask (or read his mind.)
Didn't make understanding chemistry any easier. Was lost easily with him
If chem is not your thing, I wouldn't recommnd taking a class from him. He's a great guy, sometimes a confusing lecturer but he really knows his stuff. It was nice in Chem 106 because one topic is his expertise so he covered the important things and made them make sense! I liked his style.
Absolute joke of a techer. Rambles on at the front of the classroom while he tiptoes through the hard topics, making mistakes, and then changing the subjects to make himself sound smarter and all the students look inferior.
fantastic teacher. if you can do science and keep up, he makes perfect sense. teaches chemistry exactly the way it should be. also very funny and quirky
He is an interesting teacher. His lectures can sometimes be confusing, but it was fairly easy to take notes. He knows his stuff and if you have to take Chem it might as well be from him.
He was very confusing. He didn't explain anything and gave very few example questions. The only thing that got me through this class was my amazing TA.
This was a very difficult class, but I am sure it would have been that way no matter who tought the class, if you didn't understand he was always there to answer questions. I have to give him credit though, during his test review session he stayed until all questions were answered on his own time.
At the begining he explains things well and it all goes down hill from there. His exams are hard and the questions are vague. He talks to the class like it is his upper level classes. Better than Finnegan though...
Wherland was a great professor. His exams were pretty straight forward, and the homework generally wasn't too bad. Very helpful outside of class time. Only complaint is that his final was a tougher than the previous exams which caught people offguard a bit.
If you get this guy. He explains well, but his tests are more then unreasonable. AVG on 2nd test was 55%. He does not curve, his test questions are misleading, and the class sucks all around. Not a good class...the genchem program here SUCKS. He wouldnt drop Q's from the test that 80% of the class missed. Will be stuff not on test not on lectures.

He's a pretty good teacher.. I like him better then all my other chem teachers so far. Hes a funny lil man :)
Horrible lecturer. "Digressions" on upper level topics shortchange clear explanations of IMPORTANT material. Too much "I'ma a research chemist" and not enough "I care about this class enough to teach my students" Tests are short, and not too hard, but little room for error. WSU has LOST their great GenChem teachers, & the rest are NOT "world cl
Although a lot of people don't like him, I think he's pretty reasonable (will throw out test questions if they are ambiguous), explains things well, and is kinda funny sometimes
Horrible sense of humor, boring and unexcting lectures, constantly digressing to the point of idiocy. Tests seem to be hard and material in class is not covered in some of the tests. Hopefully you have a good TA......
Hard teacher, hard class...the only thing good is that he drops quizzes and assignments... His exams are bs tho, he trys to trick you...

Many people say that he is hard, but if u attend the lecture and actually listen not fall asleep, then he is not too bad. And you gotta love his jokes and side comments.
I went to lecture everyday and still managed to not pull anything helpful out of him. Quite possibly the worst teacher I've ever had. His tests are out-of-control difficult for a 100 level class. All I can say is...make sure you get an awesome lab TA. If you're lab TA sucks, switch IMMEDIATELY to one that is good. The TA will make or break you.
If you go to lecture everyday and also read the book, you will be fine. Especially if you go to his office hours, you will get your questions answered. He wants everyone to do well. The material really isnt hard, you just have to dedicate lots of time to it outside of class... a bummer yes, but you'll get an A.
Going to class didn't help me at all. He is really nice, but lectures confusing; he seems to assume you know things when you really don't and didn't explain with much clarity. He was friendly and really likes Chem, but doesn't seem like he really cares a lot about the students. Exams are hard. I worked my butt off just to get a C+.
Wherland made awesome 'hirr' noises during lecture some times, occasionally unintentionally made t-rex arm gestures, and noted that "engineers have unit envy." Kickass. Most entertaining 8 am class ever. Also, the class was a **** at times. Never used the textbook at all.
Won't give you points for problems you've answered correctly. The chemistry department chair will hear about it. One good thing about him (or perhaps the only thing) is that he [repeatedly] reminds the freshmen to hush it up. Seriously, get it through your heads freshmen--you're in college now. Shut your trap for an hour.
Worst Teacher in my life! I always attended class but his lectures were uninteresting and useless. Bad teaching skills!!! My grade to him F!
Worst Teacher in my life! I always attended class but his lectures were uninteresting and useless. Bad teaching skills!!! My grade to him F!this teacher should stop teaching!!!!!!!!! also you will not understand what is he writing in the bord. This teacher is the worst!!
Prof. Wherland was very accessible. He's always glad to help, so I made sure to sign up for one of his classes next semester. It's difficult, but I like the way he teaches.
Wherland is great. No professor in my experience could be more perfect for a 100 level class. Compassionate, knowledgeable, and funny, he clearly wants his students to do well. Student effort pays off in class. He makes the sometimes obtuse topics of chemistry completely accessible. Top notch overall.
As far as chem professors go, Wherland is great. He explains things clearly, is eager to answer questions in lecture, and is willing to work with students during office hours. His jokes are corny but entertaining. I wanted to take 106 from him, but I'm not willing to go to his 8am lecture.
Whirly-Man go back to research and what you are good at, stay away form teaching because you don't have the skills.
Wow. Easily the worst class from the worst professor I've had at WSU. Stay away from Chem 106 with this guy because he will show no mercy....really, when the class average for the tests is 50 percent he still won't admit he's giving us the wrong material, horrible class.
Professor Wherland is a fairly difficult professor, not because he doesn't cover the content, but because the content is difficult to comprehend. I got an A simply because I put the time in to talk to the professor when I had questions instead of cowering away and whining about how he was a terrible professor. When you talked to him...very helpful.
uses a powerpoint and he goes through it really fast. Not very clear and not always in during office hours.
Classes are large, but Wherland is good at explaining everything and very willing to answer any questions even in the middle of lecture. it's a hard class but not terrible to sit through. reading the book is VERY important!
Hard class. The textbook doesn't help much but review sessions help alot. lecture was really boring. wherland was alright, had some hilarious nerd jokes and makes funny t-rex arm motions. i wouldnt take this class unless you absolutely have to.
Wherland's a nice guy who really knows his stuff when it comes to chem. That said, he should not be teaching, especially a big class like this. I went to class but found just reading the book made it easier to understand. Don't blow off the quizzes, they're hard. The exams were ridiculous and tried to trick you. He will try to help you though.
Tests are difficult, but as long as you know your way around a lab write-up and get your OWL done its hard to fail. Detailed lecture notes make the book obsolete and turn the weekly quizzes into easy points.
This is the prof to get for 105. He knows what he is talking about. However the class requires a lot of time. There are quizzes every friday, and online homework every monday. On top of it all, student needs to keep up with the reading. Exams are tough, but usually there is a 10% curve. Don't take this class unless you have to.
he's not bad. the tests are hard unless you prepare. owl takes forever so plan ahead. the review sessions are useless for exams don't bother going unless you have a specific question. the texbook doesn't help much but the study guide is extremely helpful and the practice exams are a must do before the exam. he's a reasonable guy, go talk to him
Good professor, he knows what he is talking about. His in class lectures can easily get confusing because of how hard the material is. Talking to him out of class is really helpful. Textbook is really helpful for the online OWL assignment. Do not take this class unless absolutely necessary.
Well this guy is kind of weird but knows his stuff. Inclass notes everyday and quizes on fridays. exams suck cause he sometimes throws new crap on there. Labs suck because they are lame and the writeups suck because my ta is so nitpicky its hard to get an a. My ta was shurie harrison. shes hard but knows her stuff. takes alot of time. online hw eas
I remember the first time I heard him laugh...it was so strange. Weird guy, but he knows his stuff. Tests are hard and he puts new material on them. Study!! Mastering Chemistry online homework is easy, usually you can copy+paste the problem into google and find the answer. Do not get lab with TA Shurie Harrison, she is a nit picky nightmare.
Very nice guy, helps you understand material if you care enough to ask a question, knows his chemistry well, surprised he's teaching instead of some other job related to Chemistry, very good teacher overall, class is hard though, study hard and it'll be worth it!
Good teacher, but uses some examples in lecture that I feel most students don't understand (I don't really either). READ YOUR BOOK BEFORE LECTURE. This is THE reason I got an A this semester. Labs are difficult and long; write-ups are impossible to get A's on. So make up for it with high exam scores! Study the homework for the weekly Friday quizzes
Study hard for this class! Professor Wherland is very nice and kinda goofy. He's vert willing to help you.
Wherland is not very helpful. While the in class quizzes are hard, he puts numerous zinger questions on the tests that will burn people even if they have a very firm grasp on the content. His lab manual is republished every year because it has so many errors and typos in it. Worst of all he lectures more than a week behind the homework assignments.
If you need to take chem and are decent at it, Wherland is the way to go. His lectures are structured and not difficult to follow if you pay attention to it and read the book. 105/6 are hard classes to begin with, so expect assignments, quizzes and exams to be challenging. He does digress a lot, which can be annoying but overall, I recommend him.
This instructor is very capable and he tends to be more amusing in the earlier lectures because he hasn't had his coffee yet.
Wherland is actually a really fun teacher, even though the material is pretty difficult. There's a lot of work for his classes and his tests are tricky. As a lecturer though, he's a lot of fun to listen to.
He is a good teacher and sometimes entertaining.
A hard class, and very confusing. It helps tremendously if you do the homework and really understand it, taking good notes while doing it will help tremendously on the quizzes (I wish I would have known this sooner). A good TA helps tremendously... Kyle Welch is excellent!
Great professor. Always willing to help you understand something if you don't. Also, first day of 105 was the best lecture i've ever had. Blowin' stuff up. BOOM
Very intelligent man but not a great professor. Exams are very hard! The only reason I recieved an A was because I read the book EVERY DAY. The material is not easy but if you are willing to put the time in you can get through it. Homework/quizzes/labs are not bad especially if you get a good TA. Good luck! Study hard and you will get a good grade!
very fun and interesting professor and understanding if you have a problem. Class material is very hard but if you study hard you can do well. Some of the TA's are pretty hard. don't get Schurie harrison!
Labs are nearly imposible to get A's on, quizes are drstically easier than exams. Skips over steps when teaching problems. Exams are long about 25% finish the exam in the alotted time, questions are set-up to fool. So despite having a strong group over 90% of the material you will get hammered for the 10%. Having a good Ta is essential for success
Funny, smart and a giant chemistry nerd! Makes class fairly interesting but it is tough material.
Wherland is goofy as heck. He'll make jokes during lecture which keeps us awake (8am). His exams are extremely difficult if you don't try and practice exams. Quizzes are easy since you get to use a cheat card. Study hard if you plan on getting a C if you don't get things easily. Oh and, demo on the first day? AWESOME!!!
Scott is not a good professor. He is a poor lecturer to say the least, and while he does know his stuff, he has problems translating that to something understandable. I found his lectures useless and had to teach myself from the book. Even for someone fairly bright it isnt easy to get much more than a C without comitting your life to the class.
textbook is really all you need. a tip: do well in labs, quizzes, and everything but tests and you will get a C. work hard on studying for tests and do descent in that category and you'll pull off an A. go to office hours he's extremely helpful even though he is fast during lecture. this class will give you the grade you honestly earned good luck
His exams were crazy difficult. There were questions on stuff he mentioned once in lecture and the textbook was no help. Also the lecture topics have nothing to do with the laboratory concepts. He is funny though which is good.
Professor Wherland is a good lecturer, and I had no problems with that. The tests will sometimes have problems that are not covered in lecture, tutorial, or anything of the like. Also, a good TA is a MUST HAVE for success in the class. A bad TA will DESTROY your grade.
The class itself is extremely difficult. I didn't get anything from lectures though. It is hard to follow him and the way he does the lecture(notes on overheads). I relied a lot on friends, the textbook and the TA(who still wasn't that helpful.)
This Chemistry Class is a weeding out class, if you've never taken AP chemistry or anything higher than basic chem in highschool, you are in for a hard time. His lectures are pretty useless, unless you read the book right after, which gets annoying having to do each lecture. This class is hard and i love math and science.
Wherland's lectures are pretty dry, and only helpful some of the time. Exams can be fairly difficult, and the textbook they switched to this year is awful. Having a good, helpful TA is probably the easiest way to come out of this course with a decent grade.
Tests are tricky. Quizzes are easy points that really add up to help. Be sure to do the homework. Dr. Wherland is kind of hard to pay attention to, but reading the book before or after and looking over the other professors notes are very helpful. Nick Treat is a GREAT TA.
The prof. Wasn't that bad, However you may not understand everything because sometimes he talks as he's talking to him self. quizzes aren't that hard. T.a. Schurie harrison don't take her she's tough and she'll never give you a good grade even though you work hard on your report.
CHEM 105 isn't too bad if you've taken AP Chem, but if you get a bad TA, 105 will be really hard. Lectures aren't too bad and Wherland isn't a bad prof. He just sometimes finishes lectures the day before homework is due. The tests are difficult though. Labs and quizzes and homework isn't too bad. Good luck!
Not a class you can sleep through, not do homework, and expect to do well on exams. Go to lecture and ask for plenty of help before you get completely lost. Wherland is really nice and very willing to help. He holds review sessions before exams and offers a lot of study material. He can go off on tangents during lecture, but it's not bad.
Awful teacher. He rambles on and on about the non-important things and never actually gives you an example. Avoid him if at all possible. I attended a different lecture which was the only reason i got a decent grade
Wherland is a good man and he is helpful. However, its hard to understand from him, once I attend his lecture I get confused but in fact the class the class material is very easy, you can study at home and you don't have to go to the lecture.
Wherland's class was early, and his teaching style isn't too exciting. So, many mornings in his class were spent half-sleeping. His exams were extremely difficult but the weekly quizzes were helpful. His lecture style is a bit confusing, but the notes are clear.
He helps when asked and puts on revision sessions for exams but his exams are hard and he words questions really weirdly.
Exams are very difficult. Lectures are hard to pay attention in. The way he writes his lecture notes is extremely confusing (I often found myself wondering what information went together). He is easy to understand, however. Lectures make sense for the most part (if you pay attention).
Clearly knowledgeable in his field. Could use some work on clarity of presentations. Has an accent.
Awful prof. was no help at all. Lecture was confusing unless you read the book after.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Tests are extremely difficult. Nothing like the study guide, he is no help when you ask for help on your own time. For being the head of the CHEM department he should be a much better teacher. Do anything you can not to take his class.
Many people find this class hard because of the work involved with it. Professor Wherland is a great teacher if you have a general idea of what he is talking about... Make sure to read the book before lecture, especially if you are unfamiliar with the material, and you should be able to get a good grade in the class. (The class is usually curved).
Wherland knows exactly what he is talking about, and when you take a course such as this it won't be easy. In order to pass you need to study diligently and make an effort to learn on your own. He gives ample inforin the notes, and what you don't understand you need to read up on, people blame him for bad grades but it's them.
this class is easier than chem 105 except for the 3rd exam material the prof is better than some but he is the head of the department so i would follow the way he teaches
He is a very good Chemistry teacher. If you are not a science major and are just taking his class for lab credit you won't like the work and expectations. You need to have a passion for the subjet to understand his teaching Expectaons are clear, material is tough, but he teaches it right out of the book, which is adequate. The internet taught me.
Do not skip this class
Chemistry 105 is absolute hell, but it isn't impossible. Wherland is a decent professor who will help you when you need it. He respects students who take his class seriously.
