Good teacher, good course! Always helpful and approachable.
nice guy but boring lectures. He's not great at stimulating a good class debate
average class, lots of reading that you really have to do, kind of boring
He marks way too hard. Very unclear in his expectations.
He's HOT!
Very good class. Would recommend any of his classes. Take them while you can don't expect him to be sticking aroung UVic very long.
Sticks too closely to the readings, which are useful, but needs to branch out away from the readings.
Unfair tests, boring lectures, interesting topic but he ruins it
Very interesting class--phil 331 i believe it was. You learn different views on abortion and suicide. Makes it interesting to learn. However, there is a paper to write. One in which needs to be written well. Other than that, tests are easy if you study
Best teacher I've had so far. Interesting, funny, insighful, clear, and interacts well with the class. I look forward to going to this class, and highly recommend him for any philosophy course.
Trys to teach which is nice, but do some of your own marking. T.A's know nothing!
Decent teacher, nice enough guy, never ever heard his own opinion, its always "Descartes would have answered like this...", "What Hume would say is..."
Really good at teaching philosophy. If you pay attention to what he says in class and read the readings then you'll do fine. Yes, he is very objective... likes to avoid opinions... which is good for this class. Pretty neat guy.
Cool dude. Unassuming, but definately knows what he's talking about.
Likeable and really generous with his notes. Although, there is some weird uncomfortable class vibe going on. I couldn't help but feel embarassed when he posed a question to the class and no one answered. What the hell is with you people?
Nice guy, fair and flexible too. Definitely knows his phil of biology, but perhaps a tad too impartial-I still don't know his opinions. Seminar class and he really encouraged discussion and seemed to be disappointed when there was none. Thumbs up!
Awesome course (phil of biology). You learn a tonne. If you like this sort of thing, then you'll love the course; otherwise, it'll be very boring. He's great, really helpful and loves discussions and interesting student insights.
Very funny guy, makes class interesting. Not to hard to look at either.
Very organzied and clear. Makes the concepts easier to grasp. Does not state personal opinion, which I believe, shows he is very professional and allows the student to feel comfortable about their own opinion when writing. Also, very up to date, cool guy!
Definitely nice to look at...he's got a wife. The topics we did were very interesting and he has a great sense of humor. It's nice to have a young prof. Definitely helpful and even makes a point of remembering names. Loved the class.
Awesome prof - nice tush too! Really enjoyed the course, but the TA was an arrogant, opinionated goof. Go home fratboy!
Another happy face folks! definately a good course for newly highschool-graduated kids - structure, conventional note taking - no surprises! Great prof... but if you are looking for in-depth analysis, you won't find it here. A new philosopher each day!
Nice butt and good concepts. Found this class to be fabulous. Not the easiest papers because he thinks that a C+ is a good mark. Not a class for overachievers!
This guy is the human equivilant to a Playmobile man. Watch the way he moves, you'll see what I mean.
expects a lot from students, but why shouldn't he, this is university folks. he was always willing to review my work before i handed it in, and discuss stuff. i had to work hard, but i got good grades. very worth the effort, i learned a lot.
sweet teacher
my alltime favorite prof.
My hero. I guess there is a resemblance to a Playmobil man, but that's irrelevant. He explains everything perfectly. Generous with notes. Always available for help. Overly patient with annoying students. I hang off his every word (mostly). By far, my favorite (and most charming) prof.
Good guy, I can't get over his speaking voice, I keep wanting to run up, and shake the words out of him. Sometime he ansewers too many dumb questions.
Great class, amazingly informed prof. He makes his expectations for the midterm and final very clear. However, He marks papers pretty hard which can be frusterating. I still loved this course and learned a LOT of very life applicable things.
1st off---NICE ASS!!! Other than that he's an awesome teacher and made me really enjoy and understand moral and ethic philosophy. I highly enjoyed this course and I recommend taking any course that he teaches.
The best prof Ive had so far. He explains everything crystal clear, very respectful (sometimes too much so) of everyone's opinion, and he keeps class interesting.
Plain cool. He is young, funny, clear, understanding. One of the best profs in the department.
Scott's teaching style is awesome, you almost feel like every class is a one on one session until the smelly person beside you shifts and the stench makes you lose your concentration. But besides the questionable personal hygene of my classmates, I found the course really awesome. Recommended!!
The material was difficult at times, but Dr.Woodcock was more than willing to answer questions to help us understand it. He was polite, sincere, and very approachable. Definitly recommended!
I loved Dr. Woodcock's class. Not only is he nice to look at, but also he is interesting, amicable, and extremely helpful. He's always available for help outside of class time, and has a knack for communicating difficult concepts, making them easier to understand. I'd definately recommend his course
He's an awesome guy and teacher. His TA was kind of horrible but he marks some of the stuff so it evens out
The best prof I've had. I became a Phil major because of him. Unfortunately, after taking classes with other profs, it turns out I dont like Philosophy. Damn you Woodcock!
Im a big fan of this teacher, however in the classes the people who like to hear their own voices tend to be the ones that speak not leaving time for the students who may have comments but are not assertive enough to speak over those students.
really good teacher, smart guy, really makes sure you understand what you are reading.
Scott is an absolutely awesome teacher, one of my all time favourites. He's nice, funny, knows his moral philosophy and seems to really care about students. Highly recommended.
he is the best prof EVER
SUCH a good teacher- funny, knows his material, really helpful during office hours and good at explaning tough concepts! Plus waaaaaaaaaaay cute!!! Not an easy course but worth it!!
My favourite prof this year. He understands things in such a clear and concise way, but never comes off as arrogant. He always seems like he's talking TO you, rather than AT you. There's always room for questions and he's not afraid to admit when he doesn't know....cute bum, too.
Excellent all around prof. Funny as hell and smart as well.
Amazing prof, the class is just bad. Make sure you're actually nterested in philosophy befor you take Phil 100, otherwise you'll be lost!
Scott's an awesome prof. there's a problem though...if you take a class with him, most of your other profs start to sound unenthusiastic and boring, well the material is interesting too. It’s true that he never states personal opinion, which makes the class very democratic, but I bet he's a Kantian. two thumbs up
Scott Wood**** is the best professor I have ever had the pleasure of learning under. His genuine passion for the subject matter, clear and comprehensive notes and brilliant sense of humor made class a joy to attend. I would recommend him to anyone, whether they are interested in Philosophy or not. Go Wood****.. or go home.
very helpful, clear, and fun
great prof
Dr. Woodcock is a very competent professor. I don't have much exposure to non-science professors, but he seemed very good. I got a rather poor mark, but that was totally my fault. His lectures are interesting and he gives everyone's opinion the attention it deserves. I'm looking forward to his PHIL 337 class in January.
Really great professor. He is really funny and clear and a really fair marker. I would recommend either Woodcock or Christie for any classes they offer, they are two of the best Philosophy professors at UVic.
Scott Woodcock is the best teacher I've had to date. Philosophy was just an elective for me but he has made the subject so fun and interesting that I have decideded to continue in it. Very clear, interesting lectures. He's funny and uses contemporary examples to explain the readings, a really awesome prof.
Not only was he one of the least interesting professors I've ever had, he was extremely unhelpful, constantly made lectures much more confusing then they needed to be, and was no help at all when asked questions. Avoid this course and especially this prof at all costs!
Fantastic professor! Actually makes Philosophy interesting, which I didn't know it could be. He was recommended to me (the only reason I took the class) and now I'm passing along the favour and recommending him to you. Do it. Take a class from him. Engaging and cute sense of humour. And, yeah, not hard on the eyes either.
Best class ever. Funny professor who clearly loves teaching philosophy and makes it interesting! He explains the readings very well. If you take down his notes in class, you will do well on the final. HIGHLY recommend!
Great Prof! Interesting and funny lectures, very clear explanations of concepts, and fairly light course load! He doesn't state his opinions very often which makes for an open and democratic environment. I highly recommend taking his class!
Best teacher there is at Uvic. He is hilarious, all of his slides are very clear, and he makes himself avaliable for all questions. Fantastic teacher!
An all-around great teacher - just that, a TEACHER, someone who loves to connect with students. Passionate, clear, a real gift for communication and making the problems of philosophy as well as the method feel relevant. I blame him for setting me on the path to my philosophy degree.
Professor Woodcock was the best prof. I had in my first year. He made a tricky subject super interesting and enjoyable. He is adorable and hilarious and really encourages discussion. He is just the nicest guy and the best professor; I'm taking Phil 232 this year because I so enjoyed his class last year. Everyone should take a class with him!
Dr. Woodcock ran a very well planned out course. He knew all of the papers well and knew what papers we should read. He gave both sides of the debate for every topic. I am currently in a third year class of him and he is the reason i am getting a Minor in Applied Ethics!!!!
He's really into what he's teaching, likes discussion and makes the course really interesting and fun. Definately got me more interested in philosophy.
Fantastic professor, highly recommend taking 232 and 337 with him.
Is a very committed and interesting professor. Test and assignments are reasonably tough but fair, and are designed in a way that helps you grasp and learn the content. Has a good sense of humour and makes some quirky jokes now and again. Got me into philosophy and ethics after taking 232 with him. Highly recommend any class he is teaching.
All around great teacher, funny, clear, and a really approachable and genuinely nice guy!
He was really great; made the material interesting and seemed passionate about what he was teaching. He was approachable and funny in class, but also stayed on topic. Great proff :)
Easily the best prof. I've had. Had him for both 100 and 232, and greatly enjoyed both-if I switch majors it'll be because of this teacher! Highly recommend his classes.
Easily the best prof I had first year, and will probably remain as such throughout uni. Very clear at explaining, and clear about what he wants in assignments. Marks fairly, encourages class discussion, comments. Take this course--guarantee it will be interesting and extremely engaging.
Super funny guy and really helpful. This class was engaging and he brought about some very interesting discussion.
Hilarious professor. Always looked forward to his class as a breath of fresh air. Highly recommend.
Amazon prof! Its amazing how he explains every reading clearly without being biased. Represents each philosopher in a fair and unbiased way. I always looked forward to going to his lectures!
Professor Woodcock is an excellent professor. He made philosophy interesting and had amazing notes. Exams were based on the notes in class, so make sure you attend! Also has fun activities to drill home the main concepts that are discussed in classes. Cannot recommend him enough. Dr. Woodcock is the best professor I have had thus far at UVic.
Loved him. Minoring in Applied Ethics which he coordinates and I couldn't be happier. I take every class he offers and look forward to each class. He's absoloutely hilarious. Wasn't planning to be a philosophy student studying ethics but I couldn't be happier that that is how it worked out. Strongly recomend him to every single student. You rock!!!

Awesome awesome professor. Really entertaining in class and easily approachable. Makes lectures fascinating. Very fair maker.
Scott Woodcock is an amazing prof! I would definitely recommend taking a class with him. I haven't taken any other philosophy but this class is interesting, and definitely helped me improved my persuasive writing skills. That is why I know you will be persuaded by this comment to take his class.
By far the best professor I've ever had at Uvic! It is really helpful to go to the lectures but they were always entertaining and I laughed constantly! He is a gem. I would defiantly recommend Dr. Woodcock. You do have a lot of readings to do, which can be ambiguous at times but he makes everything clear and understandable. HONESTLY SO FUNNY
SUPER NICE GUY!! He's awesome but typical philosophy class where you'll get 79 on everything no matter what you do.
Amazing class. Definitely recommend taking this or any philosophy class with him. He is so sweet and really makes the material more engaging and thoroughly explains each paper in class. The midterm and final was all written and there were two papers and two activist letters(easy 5%). If you understand the concepts you will do great!
One of my favourite professors during my entire time at UVic. Great lecturer, makes material very interesting and clear. I had him in my first year for Philosophy 100 and it made me decide to be pursue philosophy. Truly great professor and good person as well. Criteria was fair and feedback was helpful.
Transferred to Dal recently. I miss you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Really funny and friendly. I get the sense he cares about students and loves to see them get involved with the material.
Favourite course and favourite prof at Uvic so far! Lectures are funny and engaging, reasonable exams, thorough/accessible powerpoints . Excellent at moderating discussion and not letting personal bias impact his lectures. Can't recommend this class highly enough!
So Scott was my favorite professor by far this semester. He really cares for his students, has active class discussions, and gives amazing lectures. There is a lot of reading if you want an A in the course but it is achievable! His midterm contains a lot and make sure to understand the key concepts of all the papers but he really likes his students
As Scott is a kind person, I would not recommend him. Especially for first years.
I have had Scott for a semester now and I'll have him until the end of the year but so far he's been a great prof. He makes the material as interesting and engaging as he possibly can. Getting a good grade is tough but not impossible. Honestly skip most of the reading and just watch youtube videos about it and you'll do fine.
Scott Woodcock is a real gem. He's engaging, incredibly hilarious, and genuinely interested in the opinions of students. At first, I was a little intimidated by the amount of reading, but the content is incredibly interesting. It is probably the most socially/ethically relevant material I've ever covered in a class. Take PHIL232!
Dr. Woodcock was able to simplify and help make sense of complex philosophical content. He was very organized and provided all his powerpoint slides for each class in advance. His lectures were always interesting, relevant and relatable. He's very approachable and always encouraged students (even the shy ones) to ask questions and share comments.
Scott makes every class so interesting! I would take any class with him as a prof. He works hard to make sure you understand the concepts and is always there for extra help. He is very caring of all his students and each lecture is different and interesting! I really recommend him as a prof!
He's a great prof and gives excellent lectures! Very clear, thoughtful, and organized. The material is thought-provoking and he creates space for a lot of discussions in class, which is helpful in engaging with the course material. He puts a lot into his feedback so you know why you're receiving the grades you are. Highly recommend!
His lecture was great, lots of room for students to ask questions and engage in the lecture. He really cares about his students and very well organized. However I found that he's a tough grader, or maybe I wasn't doing well in his class because he covers so much material. Great professor, however his class was not a GPA booster for me.
Scott was a fantastic prof and his course really taught me a lot. His style is perfect. He will often present a few different view points on controversial moral issues and try to convince you of each one. It's a great way to learn the material and about yourself. Tests were easy. Papers were fair. His lectures are awesome. Go to them or no pass.
Such a funny guy and a very interesting class
Scott is a great prof, he makes the lectures fun and interesting, and considers a wide variety of viewpoints. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there are a lot of smaller assignments that can make the class a bit more demanding. I would definitely take a class from him again. (Sit near the front, he is quiet sometimes).
His lecture is engaging and interesting, but his exam is quite tough(maybe the content itself is also tough), so you need to study hard to pass this course.
Best prof ever. Even with the new virtual lectures, you can tell he rly gave it all. Its nice knowing that the prof generally cares and is passionate about what his teaching!
Scott is literally the best professor, especially with his adaptation to online classes. He's always very organized, happy to answer questions, encourages discussion and is so funny and sweet. Highly highly recommend his classes, super reasonable expectations and inspired me to add philosophy to my major.
Dr. Woodcock is incredibly engaging and kind. He's highly respectful of the opinions that he encourages through his welcoming atmosphere. You can tell he really cares about what he teaches, in my class he encouraged us to give to charity as was the topic in a certain unit, then gave $1,000 himself. Also a very engaging prof, making use of polls.
Professor Woodcock is a real gem of a professor. His classes are always interesting and it always feels like he genuinely cares about his students and how well you do. He's also really organized and teaches his material in a really interesting way. Would highly recommend!
Such a beauty of a prof. Knowledgeable on the subject matter, funny, and teaches in an interesting way! I was not worried about asking questions in his class. Difficulty of assignments was just right, fair grading too.
I really enjoyed my class with him. In lectures he goes over the material we read and helps everyone understand. We were graded on multiple tests and papers, as well as some mini papers for participation only. writing the papers helped us get a better grip on the material which made the tests easier! I would reccomend him.
one of the best professors i have ever had, so caring, loves teaching phil, gives good feedback not a harsh marker!
Doctor Woodcock is one of the best professors at UVIC in terms of personality. However, his courses are super heavy in reading and also the way he sets up his tests is terrible. The final exam for 337 had 5 long answer questions, 2 short answer paragraphs, 5-10 each of sentence, fill in the blank, t/f, and multiple choice. Worst test ever.
definitely my favourite prof I've had at uvic so far. Scott's lectures are incredibly engaging, the material is interesting and relevant, and he's just an all-around great guy. Definitely lots of reading, but it sets you up well to have a more engaging class. This is my first Phil class that I haven't wanted to gauge my eyeballs out in!
Scott is my favourite prof. Every lecture was engaging, unbiased, & so interesting. Never felt like a waste of my time. He constantly pauses for questions and listens to student feedback. Very approachable and so so helpful when it came to any questions around assignments. Such clear expectations and breakdowns of readings, cannot recommend enough!
Scott is by far the best prof I've ever had. Despite being a political science major, his class actually made me interested in philosophy! His lectures were super informative while still being engaging, and he genuinely cared for his students and wanted them to do well. I would 100% recommend PHIL 232, or any other class you can take with him.
Scott was my favourite teacher out of all 5 of my classes. So funny, super engaging in lectures. Was a hard marker to be honest but its because the material is very specific. Would definitely take again, not for the class but just for Scott! Also gave me $5 for free in one of the classes :)
My absolute favourite professor so far, exams are tough but all of his grading is fair and clear!
Scott is hilarious and works very hard to make sure that the class understands the difficult concepts being taught. The readings are sometimes difficult, but he spends a lot of time fleshing out the ideas and engaging the class to think about them and clarifying the concepts.
Dr. Woodcock's lectures always blend humour with in-depth discussions of topics in philosophy. He has a knack for explaining highly theoretical philosophic concepts simplistically, something very much valued as someone attending his class. I found him to be of a tough grader and your mark is based heavily of off papers and exams but it's still ok.
Engaging lecturer who explains difficult concepts clearly. Exams were hard, but fair. Feedback on the two papers was extremely useful and detailed. Lots of readings, some of which were dense, but he explained them well in class. Inspired me to minor in applied ethics. Readily available to help with papers outside class.
One of my favourite profs was always excited to go to lectures. 232 was a great intro to philosophy without any boring theory or history. He gave great feedback that is actually useful for future essays tests are difficult but fair. Take one of his classes if you get the chance!
Awesome, unbiased, and funny lectures which made it easy to understand even the more complex papers covered. Readings aren't difficult to stay on top of. There are a bunch of completion assignments which are a nice grade booster. He was a tough but fair grader on the essays. I found the tests much easier to do well on than the essays.
Scott is the best prof you will ever have. He marks pretty tough, I wouldn't recommend taking any class with him as a grade booster unless you're experienced with writing phil papers. But if you like phil papers, or just want a nice prof for once, his lectures are a lot of fun and he is great to talk to outside of class too.
Scott is the GOAT!!!!
This was one of my favourite classes so far. Scott is an amazing prof. Although I would say the lectures are mandatory to get a good grade, I always looked forward to them and found them super interesting and engaging so it wasn't a bad thing. The tests are easy if you've kept up with the reading and take notes on them and in the lectures.
