Dry ... very very dry
This guy is Dullsville. He really has no life and isn't very pleasant. If you close your book 2 minutes before class is over he'll throw a fit. He's grouchy and pathetic. Class was easy though. 3 tests and once assignment.
Very, very boring teacher. He knows lots of information but hes so dry at teaching it. His class is really easy though. He just is very monotone and boring.
Very boring. He is very knowledgable about the subject, but doesn't know how to make it interesting. There is no class involvement in the lectures, but with only 3 tests and one assignment, don't skip class! You must keep up with the reading too!
ZZZZzzzzz... Very dry, speaks too soft, although very informative. Many points can be earned to receive a good final grade, he even does a review before tests!!!Nit-Picky with grading papers!!!
This guy is Dull City. Monotone, soft-spoken and quiet. He knows his subject, but it's so hard to listen to a guy that boring. Very inconsiderate about letting the class out when its time to go, always keeps you after at least 5 minutes.
I think he's condescending, and he keeps us after class despite university custom to let us out when the course's allotted time is up.
As said before,,,,VERY boring! Along with the stinking books he makes you read, his grading of papers suck! Oh, and don't expect to get out on time, because he holds it over at LEAST 5 minutes everytime. Dull, boring and lectures were boring.
Takes a little getting used to. And he will hold you over, so don't take this class unless you have at least 30min before the next class. The class was alot more interesting than I thought it was going to be.
His voice can become monotone, so fight not to fall asleep. But his knowledge of the subject is immense. The tests involve some material you need to read, and the reading is ...YAWN...but if you get the lectures, your good.
Smart prof. Interesting class. Papers are not long, longest is 4 pages. However, he does grade the papers strict. In my opinion, this class was too difficult to be a 100-level class.
Can we say "snore-ZZZZZZZZ"? This guy can definitely take the life out of a party, even in class. He is a smart guy and I respect him, but if you don't get your daily amount of sleep he will vertainly make sure you do. I recommend coffee and
too hard for 100 level course class

I majored in soc at SVSU and he was by far the most boring prof in the dept, and in the school. He is smart, but is monotone and talked so quietly I had to sit in the front row to hear him. Sketchy with grading papers. Take with caution.
In a word? - Frustrating! He runs class like a preschool, treats students like mentally retarded kindergarteners and acts like he is the first person in the history of the world to do anthropology. Sometimes he's interesting, usually not. The assignments are a joke. Seriously, a joke.
BORING BORING BORING. Not only BORING but he thinks he knows it all. DO NOT TAKE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!
Very boring! This guy not only wears the same exact blazer every day, but he makes it so easy to fall asleep. His papers are bogus and he tries to cover too much material and put it all on the exam. He wonders why most fail the exam, well don't expext us to remember 7 chapters worth of information.
NEVER TAKE THIS GUY.. HE IS TERRIBLE AND HIS LECTURES MAKE NO SENSE. HE DOESN'T GRADE FAIR AND YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND HIM BECAUSE HIS VOICE SQUEAKS CONSTANTLY. THE MEANINGLESS LECTURES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TESTS.
Dr. Youngstedt is the best Sociology professor at SVSU. Youngstedt is inspirational, and motivating. He not only enourages class room participation but for individuals to participate in the Greater Social World Around them. He is very dedicated to his Career, he is an Anthropoligist and I recommend anyone to take his course.
This guy put the "Bore" in boring. If you are looking for an easy A, he is not it. If you are looking for an interesting class, this is not it. He is not one of the better teachers at SVSU, he's one of the worst! He is not helpful, he isn't clear or specific on what he wants from his students. He should consider a job that has no contact with people
He knows what he's talking about. Great teacher for a serious student. He expects you to work, listen, and learn. Sometimes he is boring, but you'll learn a lot.
i thought that he was a decent teacher. You definatly have to study and pay attention in his classes but that is to be expected. he is quiet but a good and understanding teacher.
One of the most boring professors ever! Very smart though, knows his subject matter well. However he will grade a 100 level Soc class like it was Sociology 400. Very rude when it comes to letting you out of class on time, ALWAYS 5 minutes after class has ended. Don't schedule another class right after this guy, or you'll be late.
He is not that boring, talks quiet sometimes, but not that much in this class. Very knowledgeable prof, and his slidshows are awesome, because they are picture he took while doing research/work in Africa. Class is fun, papers are easy. The only complaint I have is that he keeps you 5 minutes longer than class requires. Good guy in general!
This guy did not assign a volunteer student to hand in the evaluations. Tests are based on reading and lecture, and some questions on exam were never covered. He doesn't like if you question or ask to look at your test. Said more than once he could have 2 wives if he lived in Niger. Don't say "black", say African American. Very poor teacher.
Yeah, basically if you're obsessed with the small, African country of Niger, you'll just get along great with Youngstedt. For those of us who are not, which is to say...all of us, avoid him at all costs! For God's sake, the man mentioned Niger an average of seven times per lecture. Pointless class! Absolutely pointless!
This class was such a waste of money. The so-called "book" I had to buy for 120 bucks was just photocopies of other people's work that he compiled together! Well, all right, there is ONE article written by Youngstedt in the "book" but, as you may have already guessed, it was the most boring of all of them! Youngstedt should go back to Niger!
Take good notes and you don't have to use, or look at your book. The only time you need your book is to write two essays on selected readings. I would recommend sharing the book with someone. Never let's you out early, keeps you until the last possible second or goes over. Has first hand research of studies he's done in Africa, kinda interesting
So, I thought this was supposed to be a "Global Cultures" class, but it was nothing more than "Intro to Liberalism". I didn't listen to the comments from people on this site and took him anyway. Don't make my same mistake. This guy is the most terrible prof I have ever had. RUN AWAY and FAST!
OK class, papers are hard to get an A on unless you visit him during office hours. Tests are moderatley hard. He's kind of monotone and his voice cracks a lot. If you like Soc, I'd take it, he's the honors prof. So/So overall.
WEll i would say if you want a very boring class which you dont have to go to,then this is the class for you!I really hated this class and after the first 3 days of i didnt go,I only went on test days and paper days. The papers were bad and stupid and the test were worst. If you dont like to just sit and listen then dont take this class bad!!!!
the lectures were pointless. I got nothing from them. we were forced to attend this three hour friday class for pointless lectures. if you miss more than three classes (leaving 10min early and showing 10min late is an absence) you automatically fail!
Unorganized and Unclear. Jumps around the syllabus too much. Assigns tons of very difficult/dense reading. Tests consist of 4 ESSAY questions about the readings...and it's unclear out of all the readings what topics are covered on the test. Tests are graded very harshly. Lecture style(laid back-vague) and test assesment (strict) dosn't match.
he is one of my favorite proffesors
Avoid at all costs. Incredibly dull, irrelevant, and ultimately useless. He's insecure and his manner demonstrates this. Everything he teaches (?) is within the context of Niger, which apparently is the only thing of any consequence that he's ever done. He proves that no amount of education or degree can bestow actual teaching ability.
Wonderful class, very informative and lots of interesting reads
Lectures are informative. He uses real world examples to emphasize course information. He also gives clear pre-exam handouts so there are no surprises. He teaches a well balanced and informative class.
Very boring!!!! Avoid this class if you can. He is very monotone and insecure because he freaks out if you talk, fall asleep, eat or if your phone goes off. The class would have been more interseting if i could have actually stayed awake. The tests are super hard and he grades really tough
Avoid this class. Professor is very boring. monotone, and you wont be able to stay awake! its the worst class ive ever taken! tests are hard.
I enjoyed his class, although make sure you get a seat near the front of the class as he is a quiet speaker. Assignments were easy, but the tests were tough.
Take him if you can! He talks quiet so sit near the front. You HAVE to do the reading and pay attention in class. But his tests are relatively easy if you do. He will review your papers prior to turning them in if you send it via email.
He was very liberal, and only taught one side to the issues. You could not speak your mind, or ask questions in his class. Way too strict in grading papers, and plays favorites. he thinks he's better than everyone because he 's been to Africa a few times.
He was the worst teacher i have ever had. he graded me down on a paper for leaving early when there was a sub and i proved that i didnt and he still didnt care. he is monotone, only cares about his own views and is bias towards women. AVOID! worst teacher i have ever had at SVSU. would never take him again!
He whispers the entire class and ONE word to explain him and his class is... HORRIBLE..!!
This was the worse class i have every taken. He does not give a rats butt about you as a student. Hes willing to fail any student. He didnt help anyone. Favors students. Will not e-mail you back. Wont help during Office hours. I recommend you NEVER take him. Sae your self the money and time from the class you will probably fail. DONT NOT TAKE HIM.
ABSOLUTLY TERRABLE!!! his test suxs his attendents policy is to stricked and he is to quite. Learnd absolutly nothing in his class except for steriotypes...not what the class was intended for. I dont have one good thing to say about him
OMG BORING DOESNT DESCRIBE. ugh he has his own "personafied" grammar rules. Half the class was late the first day since AT the door we asked if this was the class but he spoke so quitely the only words we heard was the class and "moved". His knowledge is very simple but his readings are about 120 computer single spaced pages a week. Avoid for GPA
Avoid. NEVER left class happy most were left in anger from boredom and confusion. The writing center people was confused about the way he graded our papers. BORING BORING BORING. Exams cover about 100 pages of reading. ANYTHING from those pages. HORRIBLE actually DEVELOPED the emotion hate. I had never felt it before, he created a new emotion in me
If you don't like to read and take notes from the book, take notes during lectures, or study those notes like crazy before a test, then don't take this class. His tests are almost directly from his lecture notes but you have to study or you will not do well. There are very limited points available in this class so you must do well on everything.
Clearly the bad reviews are from whiny freshman. Go to class, take thorough notes and fill out your study guides! You don't have to read your book unless you want to do the extra credit quiz. I'm bad at tests and I walk out with 85%'s on the exams from studying the day before/day of. This is College! You can't just slide by without some effort!
He's not a terrible teacher. You do have to show up to most of the classes and definetly take notes but it's not like he speaks in riddles. He clearly outlines the notes you should take. But he speaks very softly so it's best to sit towards the front.
Talks extremely quiet almost to the point where you can't even hear him. He also constantly rambles on and on about things irrelevant to the class. If you are looking to pass then look elsewhere! I would NOT recommend this guy to anyone!
I almost have a 4.0 GPA, I am a junior, and he is the worst professor I've ever had. Do not expect an A in the class, regardless of how hard you work or how much you know. He has unrealistic expectations for his students to uphold and he doesn't hold himself to the same standards. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Seriously.
He is one of the best professors I have had. While he is rather quiet, he notes he gives are word for word what is on the test. If you go to class and listen, you will barely have to study, but beware it is more difficult learning material, so don't take this class as an "easy" one.
He is one of the most boring teacher that i have ever taken. I was planning on going into my freshman year and getting a 3.0, that is not going to happen with this guy. You do not have to read the textbook, but you do need to take crazy good notes. I would not suggest this professor to anyone. studying is mandatory if you want to pass.
Dr. Y barely teaches. He assigns readings and then every week all students are divided into groups to present the material. If those students hadn't read, the rest of the class would be screwed for the tests. Also, he routinely forgets to mark people as being in attendance and then refuses to admit his mistake, resulting in problems for everyone.
Dr. Youngstedt is extremely helpful. Sociology of Religion has a lot of work, but I am really happy I took it. It seriously made me a better student. I know a lot of people who did well in his class. You will be fine, don't be afraid to take his classes
You need to sit in the front row if you want to hear him, he talks very quiet. He seems like a nice guy but it has to be the most boring class in my entire life. Bring a monster or red bull to stay awake. I would not suggest taking this professor.
Excellent prof! Knows his stuff. Loved the class. If you are interested in learning and thinking, you'll love him. Cute, too.
Really knows what hes talking about. I can see the class being boring if you don't like sociology, but if you're into it, he's awesome. A lot of real life experience and examples. Take good notes, but the study guides tell you exactly whats on the tests.
The reviews were nothing like what I experienced. He talked about interesting topics and even made the class laugh at times. You have to read a lot but I could easily skim the readings a get by just fine. The only thing that bothered me was that he's a stickler for papers so write carefully! He's not that "quite" either.
I honestly enjoyed this class, had no prior knowledge in anthropology but Dr. Youngstedt is very knowledgeable and enjoyable to listen too. However his voice is often soft spoken so you do have to focus. Overall the class was engaging, and easy to do well in. Only a few tests and he gives out study guides as well as in class reviews! I recommend!!
I'm an international student. The exams are hard I couldn't understand most of the questions how about the answers. he didn't help me he just said if u want to review come to my office! Besides the review time before exam only 10 min.the class is BORING forever. he gave us a lot of topics in a short period of time..I DON'T RECOMMEND taking his class
His lectures were all over the place. Very hard to follow and not very clear about the guidelines of the class., Talks frequently about stuff that is not on the tests and that has nothing to do with the class.
Most of his lectures are boring and monotone but if you are interested in Anthropology, then you will like his class. He definitely knows his stuff and is very passionate about it but he doesn't convey it very well. His tests come straight from his lectures and the assigned readings... so you MUST read.
Definitely knows plenty about the subject but expects too much of the student. It was a tough class and most of the time he spoke too quietly and moved on from subject to subject too quick. Make sure to write down nearly everything he says otherwise you'll be clueless on what to study.
My GPA is low now because of him lectures are so hard .. he is not helpful at all.. he is arrogant & don't know how to treat students
Grades papers very intense, as if he was a english teacher, expects a lot, must read book, can pass if you give a medium amount of effort
Very tough grader
Dr. Youngstedt is a very good prof in my opinion.I've had about 2 classes with him now... I highly recommend him for the Soc of Regions class...it was very interesting. One of the only things I did not like was he did not give the dates for the video assignments so if you didn't do the first one and missed the second some points are deducted...
Good teacher. is very quiet and monotone but he really knows his stuff. really enjoyed it, challenging but interesting
As long as you are in class and take down all of the notes, you should do well on the exams. The exams are straight from the notes but they are all writing with few multiple choice which are mostly vocab. You also have visual assignments to do and you have to be in class and sign in the day he assigns it. Easy if you take notes and do study guides.
Dr. Youngstedt was so knowledgeable and inspiring. I had to take the course, but it blew my mind and id take it again. I learned more in one semester with him than probably my entire college career. He definitely makes you work for your grade. Do the reading (as much as you can) and listen during class and you will have no problem landing an AB
Dr. Youngstedt was honestly the best professor I have had so far. He's awkward and can be misunderstood as arrogant sometimes but he has good intentions. He is extremely knowledgeable. Classes are lecture based but can be extremely interesting. The exams are typically challenging but if you make the study guides you should be fine.
If I could go back to registering knowing what I know now, I would skip right over him. He is very monotone, but yet tries to use a speedy technique to teach the class while also blabbering on about nonsense. When it comes to him grading anything, he will GRADE you down to the T. Wouldn't wish him on my worst enemy.
He is okay. The worst part was his long lectures and pop quizzes over reading. There was a lot of reading and I could rarely keep up with it on top of my other 3 classes. He expects high quality work and is very passionate about what he teaches, however he is very quiet and monotone. Hard to stay awake, wouldn't recommend the night class.
Dr. Youngstedt grades hard, is the most boring lecturer I've had (Im a senior), and makes you read a book every two weeks. I recommend not taking him.
The teaching language is not good. It's kind of boating class.
He is tough grader. Less helpful and he never cares about the student. I don't recommend taking his classes.
Very little help. Material is dry. Must read the book to pass the exams. Few assignments so you must do good on the exams to pass.
Scott is a great professor. His lectures are full of insight and can be very inspiring at times. He is very knowledgable and seems to intend to leave a lasting impression on his students. His course isn't the easiest though. There is a lot of reading and the grading criteria can be strict. Just don't be lazy. I would definitely recommend his class.
He's a super quiet and monotone guy but really knows what he's talking about and is obviously very passionate about the subject. Very helpful if you just ask him. Homework and exams aren't too bad. I would take again.
Dr. Youngstedt is an extremely passionate person about what he teaches which makes it interesting, however, he is a pretty tough grader. Don't expect to pass if you do not show up or read the assignments. You really have to work for this grade. He's really monotone and is very quiet-- I suggest the front row. Good luck!
He is not friendly or helpful to students at all. There is a lot of group assignments and he is a fan of quizzes and no multiple choice.
Professor Youngstedt's teaching style is a little dry, he just reads off his notes and lectures. That being said if you're actually interested in the subject his stories and work in the field are super interesting but to other people it may just be boring. I didn't use the book and I was okay, just take notes.
I would only take this class if you are genuinely interested; I had him for Intro to Anthropology. He's very into what he teaches, and you will learn a lot, but nothing is ever posted online. Lectures are mostly just writing down what's on the board; he says you need the book but I never bought it and did fine. Few, but tough, assignments/tests.
He talks super soft so if you want to hear him clearly, sit in front. If you don't read the assigned reading before class, be prepared to fail. He gives random quizzes and randomly assigns group discussions. The assigned reading is usually long and hard to understand but the answers to the quizzes are usually in the first couple pages of reading.
Prof Youngstedt really knows anthropology. You should expect to do the readings and come to class prepared but you should do that anyway ;) He tells stories really well and kept me interested most of the time. Recommended
Because Dr Youngstedt has traveled a lot in Africa, he makes this class really interesting. He shows pictures from his travel and talks about the research he's done there. And he helped me understand a part of the world that seemed really confusing before I took his class. A caring prof who really wants to share what he knows.
Great class. You have to show up daily and have read before class but if you do its easy to get a good grade. He talks a lot about Africa and puts it in a global context which is really great since he knows so much about it. He makes the class interesting.
No other class has made me want to hop on a plane and travel like Youngstedts Africa class. This guy knows Africa and brings into the lectures a lot of stories of his own travels there. And if you're in the international studies major, definitely add this one to your course schedule.
Youngstet is a good and interesting prof. He's traveled all over the world, and so he has got great stories that help you understand the concepts from the book very well. He doesn't use Canvas, so there are no online quizzes or extra readings to download.
Best class. So interesting to learn about different religions and not just the main ones but Caribean ones too. Every class was interesting.
I didn't know anything about global politics, but Dr. Youngstedt explains it really clearly. There's lots of writing because it's a CI but he gives good feedback.
I took this class as a general ed requirement and didn't expect much but it was really good. You have to read but the reading was interesting.
good way to get a gen ed. Dr Youngstedt has interesting lectures and is really supportive. I hope to take a nother class from him again before I graduate
good lectures and fair grading
This class is very clear and cut. Show up and do your work. The teacher is very passionate and is very soft spoken. He is very adept and educated and open minded when it comes to his work as well. Put in the effort and you'll get a good grade. VERY interesting class and book.
A lot of reading. He is very quiet, but it was an awesome class.
He has a very soft voice so try to sit in the front so you can hear him. He is a fare grader but there is a lot of work outside of class.
60+ page articles assigned to read before each class. Unexpected quizzes and group discussions on readings. Very monotone and quiet at the beginning of the semester. By the end, he was just monotone. Quite a few papers b/c it is a CI course.
Scott Youngstedt is one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are often accompanied by real-life experiences. He doesn't just speak of the principles he teaches, he has lived and seen them. His homework is concise and his exams are fair.
Never take this man again. He is the most monotone man, and gives the most dry presentations in the school. I took him in 112, and tried desperately not to take him again but had to in order to graduate. Truly, the worse decision in my college career. If you take him, be prepared to commit ALL your time to him.
Overall, this was a really enlightening class. I really enjoyed the readings in the first half of the class. You're split up into groups for discussions, and then one person from the group has to speak. Most class time is spent discussing the readings. I didn't like how there were 4 (short) papers due in the last month of class, though.
Great professor, I was nervous walking into the class after looking at RMP but I had little reason to fear. The course has a level of difficulty if you take notes, listen carefully, and read the books you should pass. Also, he was able to adapt quickly when COVID hit he jumped on Canvas and did a great job keeping the class flow. BIG Props!
He clearly hates America. Its pathetic having a professor blame world hunger and climate change on the great country we all live in. His class was a failed attempt to indoctrinate students on why capitalism and our country is evil. He never taught anything. We read articles that he uploaded on canvas and all asgmts. and exms we based around those.
Dr. Youngstedt is definitely a tough cookie. There is a LOT of reading so make sure you have the time to read the assigned reading; theres papers or short paragraphs assigned! Hes very clear on what he wants included, and grades down to a T. He knows if you put effort in or not. The exams are also lengthy.
Actual quotes in context from Dr. Youngstedt: " I think men have done enough to ruin the world, it's time we handed everything over to women and stepped down."- lecture about African Hunter- Gatherer tribes "Communism is good, it has just hasn't been done right yet"- lecture about South American shaman beliefs. Stop it. Get some help.
This professor was extremely hard, although he was very understanding. I personally would not take this professor again.
I have only been in this class for a few weeks and Im already struggling. This class should not be difficult but with his grading it is. I received minimal feedback and when I tried emailing him about a grade he gaslighted me and threatened me with a worse grade. If I could give him a worse rating I would.
Youngstedt was monotone. Grades very hard, looks at the fine details because he has read '5000+' books. There was too much going on. He has assignments due every week that can have 20+ pages in an article. When you only need 5 pages of out of the 20 to do the question sets he assigns.
his grading is harsh, and he will make you down for his own grammatical preferences. the lectures are long and hard to obtain knowledge from. however he is clear on what he expects from students.
Very monotone and boring lectures. Changed the rules of our assignments halfway into the semester from 2 days to do "question sets" to 20 mins in class without being able to use the book as a resource. Grades so harshly I don't know how anyone could get an A. If there's a different professor for SOC 280, go with them !!!!
This class is tough and pretty stressful, so be ready to read everything a few times. The grading system is rough, and it's impossible to get an A. The lectures are super monotone and boring but don't skip them because you won't get the notes anywhere else since the only thing he uses Canvas for is posting grades and announcements.
he is very bias in what he teaches, and ONLY addresses how capitalism is bad and communism is better. NOTHING except for your grades is on canvas, EVERYTHING else is/must be in physical, printed form. he never answers emails, and the content in his exams never matched the study guides.(he punished the ENTIRE class because SOME people were using ai)
qoutes from Dr. Youngstedt: "I don't think it should be legal for someone to buy a pick up truck if they don't use it for its intended purpose. some might say thats communism..... and interferes with our rights..... but it's not" and "slavery was bad........ but it was good for the economy!"
Enjoyed the material taught in the class but not the way it was taught. He's super quiet and he doesn't use canvas AT ALL. The homework is kind of tedious and every assignment must be printed out and turned in in person. He'll allow you to email assignments if you are sick though. Heavy use of textbooks and one of them was almost impossible to find
I thought the actual subject was very interesting and he is very knowledgeable! He is a very tough grader, making it almost impossible to get an A. Nothing is posted on canvas except for grades. A textbook is required and there is a lot of reading but make sure to do it because all the assignments are based on it.
Dr. Youngstedt is a very challenging professor, but he's a fair grader. He expects quality work and that you will be ready for class. He will respect you if you show him respect. He is soft spoken, but will repeat himself if asked. Don't be afraid to answer questions in class. He's an expert at trying to reframe a wrong answer into a right one.
Professor Youngstedt has a unique teaching style that isn't easily learnable for myself and other students. He is a tough grader and doesn't grade your assignments quickly. During lectures he goes so fast and talks so quietly so you can barely hear him. It is hard to learn during lectures when you are trying to write down the information in time.
Do not take a class by this professor, unless there is absolutely no other option. He has a very odd personality. This class shouldn't be titled "Global Cultures" it should be "Scott Youngstedt's Opinion Piece on His Hate for Capitalism". He knows how to get a plane ticket to The Gambia but doesn't know how to work a projector.
Dr. Youngstedt's classes are old-school and a bit heavier workload than most, but a lot of students that don't like him are just afraid to actually put effort into their classes. Lots of reading and the Question Sets are kind of like weekly pop quizzes, but he's a chill guy if you get to know him. Sit near the front because he's very quiet.
