For an intro class, tests where difficult even with studying. Uses a lot of online homework and reading which is a pain and can be difficult. Not the best professor for GEOL120
Bad don't do it, online homework and learn-smart (online book) work was easy but didn't prepare you for the tests and the final is cumulative
There's weekly readings from the online textbook (so don't buy a hard copy!) that you have to do because there's questions that go along with it. The website tracks your progress so the grade depends on how much you do. The tests are somewhat difficult.
Great teacher! One of the best I've had so far at CSU. Something changes, he'll let you know. You have a question, he'll answer it. I'm not even a geology major and I enjoyed his class very much. Each week there is assigned homework but it is really easy! Great instructor!
I absolutely loved professor Bryan. He is enthusiastic about teaching students and that is important. He is a really cool guy and very willing to help. He is very fair and fun to listen to. The reading assignments are very time consuming, but lectures were awesome. GET THE E-BOOK. I would recommend him to anyone. Favorite professor so far.
I loved Sean. He was very fair and an engaging lecturer. He cares a lot about his subject and tries to make students enjoy it as well. Tests are difficult, but all multiple choice and easy to pass if you study. He assigns weekly online activities, but you can usually skip the reading. Don't buy a textbook, only the eBook. Show up to lectures.
This class was easy for someone like me who hates science. It's all stuff that most of us have learned before in grade school. Go to all the lectures because there are clicker points but they usually aren't too hard. The one horrible part of this class is the connect homework (time-consuming/pain). Other than that the lectures were easy to follow.
Really easy going
I clickers are used in Geol 120. If you don't go to lecture you wont get a good grade.
Sean is super enthusiastic about his classes. But as someone that's not very interested in science I still didn't really enjoy going to his class (which you have to do to get iclicker points). Don't buy the hard copy textbook. Only buy the eBook. Tests are online except for the final.
Attendance is mandatory bc of iClicker questions every day. It's all lecture & tests for the most part but only 3 tests. Doing the online homework will save you if you don't do well on the tests which can be a little tricky. It's not a difficult class if you just do everything but it's also not necessarily an easy A if you don't try.
You must show up to class to pass his class. There are literally hundreds of iclicker points. However the midterms are online and are easy if you take good notes and manage time well. Overall his lectures are bearable but I mainly showed up for the daily iclicker points.
Very easy class. He puts all his tests online except for the final which is in class. Iclicker points are taken everyday so if you show up you get a good grade.
4 midterms - all online at home. 1 final - in person. Homework every week - online at home. Not a hard class at all, but you have iclicker points so you need to go every day. Midterms are all really easy.
This class can definitely be long and boring, but it's incredibly easy. Sean is super helpful if you need it, but he offers so many dropped grades and the homework and midterms are online. If you need an easy science credit and this counts, take it.
Sean is a very passionate teacher, and awesome for explaining concepts and providing help. The grading for GEO120 is very clear and simple. You just do weekly homework, show up to class or iClicker points, and take an online midterm once in a while. It's an easy A if you put in the time. Its not hard, but you need to actually use brain cells.
Lots of clicker points in class so you have to go. 4 midterms but all online so it's easy. He clearly cares about the students and material he is teaching. He also is very understanding as well as long as you shoot him an email saying you won't get something done in time.
Geology 120 is a very easy class. If you go to class you will get a good grade. Sean Bryan is one of the few professors to give extra credit via these mid semester and end semester surveys. He is always willing to help students and is very caring. I recommend Sean Bryan as a professor to anyone. If you can take Geology 120 take it!
I had a really great time in this class. Sean is a great professor and really seemed to love what he was teaching. 10/10 would take a class from him again, in fact I probably will be. Grading is very explicit and there is no wiggle room, so yes, you have to DO THE ASSIGNMENTS, but they are reasonable. You get 5 free passes for not showing up.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Previously, all exams were online... Well not anymore. Impossible in class exams and the final is worth 25%!!!!!!! of final grade. This teacher is ridiculous and no one should take him. This is a 100 level class acting like a 300! do not take
Easiest class ever, with a good professor. 3 exams and a final, he drops one of the exams. Clicker points daily that you should get. You could be working on an art project and he wouldnt say anything, even though he says cell phones away and no other homework. Hes nice though, take this teacher and class for your AUCC science credit!!!
The lectures are very boring, but you have to show up because clicker points are a big part of your grade. Midterms are online and are somewhat easy. 2 weekly quizzes.
Very long boring lectures, and there isn't even much information that you can write down.
Sean is a great guy actually. He cares a lot about the subject and does a good job explaining questions. He teaches huge lecture classes but genuinely cares about each person passing.
Sean is a great guy and really cares about his students. His lectures can be a little boring sometimes but he posts all of his slides online and there are only 4 tests and he drops the lowest one at the end of the semester.
Professor Bryan loves rocks and the stories they tell. If you show up and do weekly, easy online quizzes you will pass. He is a caring guy and easy to learn from.
Sean Bryan is a really nice guy, you can tell he really does love Geology. The workload is a bit much for an AUCC class, you have to stay on top of your assignments or you will start to see your grade slip. Clickers are used every class so you have to show up. If you do all the right things and put a good amount of effort in you'll do just fine.
Super lecture heavy, but the lectures are not interesting. Only redeeming thing about this class was that the midterms were online.
Sean is one of the best profs I have had at CSU. He truly cares about everyone in his classes passing, and he LOVES rocks. His passion makes class fun, there are 4 midterms online, a final, 2 weekly quizzes (2 tries per), and clickers account for a big portion. Go to class and you'll pass.
All the tests are open note, and it helps to actually do the readings and weekly quizzes. Sean is very passionate about what he teaches which is refreshing as well. Beware the GEOL121 lab though, because it is a toss up on if you will get a helpful TA instructor or not.
Sean Bryan really cares about his students. If you dont understand something he will always respond to email and be there during office hours. There are 4 midterms online and he drops the lowest one. We do participation on iclicker reef in class which is a huge percentage of grades, same with online quizzes. This is the easiest science class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This is a 100 level class. Supposed to be fairly easy but this professor just makes everything so hard. Even though most tests are online except for the final, the final is cumulative and worth 20%!! The material is fairly easy but sean makes it seem like this is a 400 level class.
sean was very passionate about geology but gave lots of work for an aucc course
This class is a very large lecture so almost everything is online. There's two online quizzes a week, which I thought was kind of a lot, but there's two attempts on each one. Sean is very passionate about geology. As long as you do every quiz, online midterm, and iClicker, you should pass. Lot's of things to do but not horrible
Professor Bryan cares about Geology way too much to be teaching this introductory class. The content in this class isn't basic and is 100% memorization. He makes it intentionally hard to get an easy A and makes you work for it even though he knows 95% of his students aren't going to be geology majors. I would never take his class again.
Sean does a great job at making this class as easy as possible, providing tons of resources and clear communication. You get an 8.5x11 sheet of paper on tests for notes (both sides) and quizzes are open note. iClicker is a big part of the grade and really boosts you up. Quiz answers are easily found in the textbook and he gives you two chances.
If you are reading this right now there is a 90% chance that you are trying to decide between taking GEOL120 or another AUCC science class and lab. TAKE GEOL120 YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. The class is really easy because Sean did such an amazing job designing the curriculum to the point that even when you're not learning, you are somehow learning.
A lot more difficult than it needed to be. HUGE class and the slides he puts up only have pictures so you cant even take notes. A ton of work for this level of class.
Dr. Bryan is very passionate about what he teaches, and he honestly does a good job lecturing to about 300 students at once. The material, however, is extremely dry and doesn't latch on to a lot of people. Most students take this class for the AUCC credit, with that said, a study group would have helped me a lot more.
Sean is super passionate about geology and teaches a pretty easy class. You have to go to lecture because there are a ton of iclicker questions. The book is free and online which is a huge plus, I never really used it. There are a ton of cushion points so if you don't do super well on the tests (where you get a cheat sheet) you'll still be fine.
He solely focuses on the reading and videos he provides. If you don't read every single detail and have all of the notes accessible at a moments notice you will not pass. He is very specific with his questions both on his major exams and his quizzes and is often confusing. I found myself studying between 8-12 hours for this one class per week.
I loved this dude. He wants you to succeed, there are no stupid questions, and he's very available. My only complaint is at the beginning it was reading heavy, but it mellowed out. Now I don't even read the book, his lectures are enough
Hes a good teacher and wants you to do well, however, his classes are super boring. IClicker counts for a big part of this class.
Rating on the lab even though he was not necessarily the professor as he had TAs. I found the lab bizarre as you're graded on accuracy rather than trying. For specialty classes, I would get that. However, for a class mainly taken for an AUCC, you would think the grading would not be as intense when you're learning these things for one hour a week.
This class was so easy. Lectures got a little boring a little quickly. Exams are open notes and there were hardly any other assignments besides that. If you're looking for an AUCC course, take this.
Overall I really liked the structure of Professor Bryan's class but sometimes felt like the lectures were a little boring. There are a lot of small quizzes, 4 tests, and then a final which were all fairly easy. I felt like I learned a little bit in this class and it was a good class to fulfill my AUCC credit.
Professor Bryan is a super good professor for an AUCC class. He makes the material accessible and the textbook is free. There's a weekly quiz/RPA that counts for participation, a weekly survey, and 4 summative assessments. If you pay attention to his lectures then you really don't need to read the book for anything other than if you have questions.
Great teacher!
This was one of the most boring and hard to follow classes I've ever take in STEM. The way things were taught was not beneficial to most people, on top of the fact that the class was just hard to engage in. People fell asleep regularly and the lab equally sucks.
Anyone that hates on Sean for Geol 120 is my enemy. He is extremely passionate and it shows in his lectures. He has a quiz system that ensures you understand it, that I didn't take advantage of (take them as many times as you want). If you attend all the lectures, do I-clickers, get 100s on the RPA quizzes, you should get an A, or a very easy B.
I'm speaking as a non-stem major, but Sean is good, not great. Lectures are a drag but necessary due to I-clickers being graded. He does his best to include hands-on activities with identification and timelines, but overall loses the attention of the class. Textbook is free but necessary as test material is not always covered in lecture.
Interesting class but participation is very important, iClicker attendance points can have a big impact on your grade
Sean was a good professor, that clearly cared, but he just didn't capture me as a student. This class was an absolute drag and I almost stopped coming to the classes. Don't get me wrong, the lab was fun, but the class itself was just dull. But I will completely say that Sean cared and is a nice, genuine, and kind professor.
This class is an easy A. He posts the lectures online and he's a nice guy. I don't like how much he uses iclicker though, and iclicker is a heavy portion of your grade. His lectures are pretty boring and it's one of those classes that feels painful to go to. I'd say take it if you need an easy science credit but don't expect it to be interesting.
Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant human.
He's a very nice guy but not the best professor. I don't like how much he uses iclicker though, and iclicker is a heavy portion of your grade. His lectures are pretty boring and it's one of those classes that feels painful to go to. Its an easy science credit but he can make a topic that is very interesting and turn it into something so boring.
Participation points and assignment have a bigger impact in the grade than exams.
He knows what he's talking about, but lectures are so. freakin. boring. Attendance is taken through iClicker (so much iClicker) and Echo360 was available, which made this class bearable. Lectures are seriously iClicker heavy to a point it is unhelpful. Professor Bryan cares about students but should probably do some restructuring. Textbook is free
tests are hard and content is boring. he is very caring and friendly!
Awesome guy, mid class.
Easiest A you'll get for a science class, don't go to class just sign into the iClicker and chose a random answer. Four exams and all the answers are online, but don't take the lab because the TA's make you stay the whole time and it just sucks.
GEOL121 is a lab, my TA was amazing- fun, inspirational, and most importantly I enjoyed coming to class. Ive taken sean's lecture and loved it and loved the lab even more. Didn't love the two field trips as it was messy and annoying. Labs can be difficult to understand without help from TA.
Sean is awesome! You can tell he really loves geology. He puts a lot of effort into lectures and activities. If you are taking geo120, MAKE SURE you have Sean!!!
the class was alright but so boring and there were a million iclickers every class. the class size was so large that it was hard to focus
Sean Bryan was a descent professor for this required class to graduate. While you are technically required to do readings, I never did it and ended up just fine. However, lectures are a big deal, but I managed to end with a B while only going to half the classes. Also, lectures are very boring.
This class isn't too hard, the homework reading is incredibly long and tedious, but the videos are alright. The lectures are long but he is passionate and shows cool things sometimes. The quarters and final are open book which is a massive win, also the RPA's aren't graded on score, but how often you do them.
do not take this class if you have any self respect. this is a 200+ student class with everyone shoved into a big room. i can't move without elbowing someone else. you absolutely can't miss the lecture, even though its a 100 level class. miss two iclickers? watch your entire grade drop an entire letter. the professor is a bit of a pushover/very meh
This class isn't that bad but if you don't pay attention to every single thing in class- you're screwed. I mean everything. There's also LOT of assignments, so prepare to do at least 3 assignments a week, not including test weeks.
Sean Bryan was a great instructor! This class was a little challenging if you do not pay attention to the lectures and take notes. I did not bother reading the textbook. Lots of iclicker but he drops 6 absences. Most of the tests are online including the final which is nice. I think that the course material is just hard because science is hard!
Mostly a review about the TAs as this was a lab course. The lab is super easy if you go (I didn't), and grading is pretty lenient. Mostly, the class is just boring. Maybe it was just my TA, who knows. Overall, I would say just take another lab course for your AUCC, as geology isn't really worth your two hours a week unless you really like rocks.
A lot of lecture time but really fun topics
Prof. Bryan is very lecture heavy, and takes the entirety of all of his classes to talk. Be prepared to show up to class a lot, since he takes attendance. Aside from this, he communicates really well, and is willing to take time to talk to you.
He posts the slides but does iclicker every day. There are a couple of test but weekly ones too, make sure you do the weekly ones 3 times to get a good grade. You should pay attention during class but the big tests are easy just heavy.
not great but not bad either. pretty boring. he doesn't ever make study guides for exams which is pretty annoying for an intro class. if taking for credit, i would take his class. def managable
Sean is genuinely a great professor who values the material he teaches. The only thing is the difficulty is made to sound easier than it is by advisors. Attendance is mandatory because of iclicker; however, he drops 6 of them throughout the semester. He is also very accommodating to disabled individuals (at least in my personal experience).
He cared and actually new what he was talking about. I wouldve loved this class if i was actually interested in geology
the class itself was fine. exams were online and students got 3 tries per exam. however, the final is in person and covers the whole semester. it just frustrates me that most students in this class are not geology majors and therefore are just taking it for credit and have to spend extended amounts of time studying for the final.
I actually had him for NR-140. I think his rating should be way higher. I didn't take geology with him so idk maybe hes different in a harder class but dr bryan was so sweet. he actually responds to my emails and he really did care about his students. he was super lenient with attendance and late assignments.
All the tests are online until the 20% final which he makes it a 100 questions with multi select with five possible answers. He wanted to hurt everyone's grade because everyone was doing good. Don't take his class. He is also very rude.
Sean was actually a great professor, if you pay attention in class and actually go most of the time this class is not difficult. He also gives lots of practice quizzes to prepare for the final which I'm assuming most of the people who left bad reviews did not do.
Sean isn't great or awful. He lectures the entire 1 hr 15 minutes for every class which can be boring, and his slides sometimes require you to interpret charts to understand the concepts. All unit assessments are done online, asynchronous, and you get 3 attempts. Discussions are completion only. The final was hard, but it's doable if you study.
I really liked Sean. All of the exams are online except for the final. He does an iClicker but it didn't count for part of my grade and he doesn't have the location setting on so did it from home. Assignments are extremely easy but the final was very challenging. I had a 96% all semester but the final dropped me 10% Ended with B+, very manageable
I took this for my AUCC and liked everything I learned about. A student passed in our section & he was really kind abt it. If you just do all the busy work and do a quizlet for exams ur fine. Idk what the drama on here is abt tbh. It's a science class that's for everyone ofc it's gonna be hard to cater to everyone. He's a good professor.
I never met Sean, only the TA who taught my lab, but this lab is very well organized and very easy to do well in if you try. I actually learned a lot and had fun. Would recommend!
Never met him as he was my lab professor, but communication with him was incredibly easy, allowed me to make up a final due to a family issue. He also really cared about my accommodations.
This guy has no idea what he is doing. 100 slide lectures every week, 0 homework, quizzes every week, 3 midterms, and a final worth 25% of your grade. Exams are impossible and he gives you nothing to help you study or even somewhat understand the material. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IT IS TERRIBLE.
Class is heavily based on midterm grades. Almost everything is just lectures and iclicker (attendance is a heavy portion of your participation grade.)
Course is built around the mid terms and final exams.
I hated this class. The slides contain zero information, the "study guide" he gives is a practice exam that is nothing like the test. DO NOT TAKE IT!!!
Genuinely the worst lecturer ever. He lectures for the entire hour and a half and it is basically impossible to retain any of it because of how boring he is. Don't waste your time on the lectures and instead just be prepared to teach yourself all of the content. The class is extremely exam heavy, and the final is made unnecessarily difficult.
This guy is utterly pathetic. Your grade will be determined by midterms ONLY. Don't think the midterms are easy either, he makes the mid terms like your a 5th year Geology major. Even worse, his poor TA's that lead the labs are just as lost. I was required to take this course for a credit and it was by far my hardest final, 100 question. DONT TAKE.
This class was intensely lecture heavy and the lectures lasted the whole hour and a half, making little to no sense. Attendance is mandatory. The course is also fully reliant on your midterm exams and final exam. Would not recommend this course as it was the hardest AUCC I have had to take at this university.
DO NOT TAKE. If you are not a geology major or someone who is willing to go to class every single day and actively learn a ton of material. Your grade is dependent on 3 mid term in person tests (that have 5 DIFFERENT VERSIONS PER CLASS) and then the 100 point all multiple choice final that is worth 25% of grade. Terrible class. Unaware professor.
I would recommend that if you decide to take geology attend office hours when you're stuck. Professor Sean is extremely professional and always answers emails. Use quizlets and study with friends. He is more than willing to explain concepts during his office hours and making sure you feel confident in his class!
With this geology class you have to take a geology science lab that doesn't grade things until end of semester. So your final grade is a myth until then. He is not easy too reason with at end of semester to help you get a good grade
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, choose any other option. It was by far the hardest course I've taken in college, harder than my upper-division math classes. Mandatory iClicker was a waste of time. Grades rely almost entirely on brutal midterms with expectations far beyond the course level. Extremely stressful and draining.
Don't take this class thinking its going to be an easy A, be prepared for brutal exams, required lectures, and no extra credit opportunities. Sean is a good guy, the class itself just kind of sucks. He did round my 79.9 to a B- though.
It's clear he is very knowledgeable about geology, however he teaches in a monotone voice that makes it very hard to pay attention. Exams will have questions about things he quickly mentioned once in class. Most of your grades are exams which are very difficult. If you are taking this for an AUCC pick a different science class.
