smart, funny, one of the best professors i've ever had.
He is a very good professor. If you pay attention in lecture, you will be just fine.
He gives alot of HW but its worth it, he is the best math proff I had

the greatest professor in ccny i ever had.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Great lecture, tons of homework, but is definitely worth in preparation for his exams!! HE IS SO AWESOME...down to earth, BEST PROFESSOR FOR ANY HIGHER LEVEL MATH!!!!
he moves extremely quickly, does not explain everything properly gives ridiculous examsand grades terribly
funny guy. do all the HW and you'll be fine.
Luckily, you can read the textbook and do well on the tests. Warning, watch out for the third test, sequences and series, your A average might turn to a B or worse after the 3rd test. Do all the problems on series to make sure you've got a hold of it. Fall 2004 final was also surprisingly hard.
Best prof I've had yet at CCNY- great explanations, actually kind of funny too.
clear explanations and wanted us to understand, I learned alot of stuff from 201 and 202 that I didn't understand before he explains that stuff too, hard exams though, I crashed on the triple integrals stuff but still did ok in the end but had to do all the hw and there was a lot
He is one of the best professors that I've ever had, but he gives too much homeworks. Definitely I'd recommend that you take the class with him
in a word...stupid. talks from the book. he has no ideas. weird guy.
Great prof! Best at CCNY so far for me.
He's a hyper guy and grades fairly. He goes a bit fast.
He went fast but he explained things many different ways when I didn't understand.
He is probably one of the best professors at City College. He explains clearly and he gives you lots of homework problems to practice for the test. Great class!
WHAT AN OUTSTANDING PROFESSOR! He is the most down to earth, clear, helpful and intelligent professor I have ever encountered. His exams are straight forward, but the material itself is hard. Though he gives a lot of homework, DO THEM ALL because it will help you for your exams and final! He really prepares you for those ccny math finals!
Clever professor and has really good methods of making you understand not so easy topics. Attendance is not mandatory but is important if you want to pass. ONLY professor I suggest for MATH 203!!!

just take him ..good professor
easy tests. lots of hw. ask questions
This guy knows his stuff and is very passionate about the material.
One of the best in the field. The material maybe hard for some, but he goes over it really well and answers questions really well. EXPLAINS THE MATERIAL WELL!!! Make sure you do his long homework for practice. His tests are rather straightforward. Got A+ with doing all HW & 3-5 hr. study before exam. Prepared me well for departmental final!
Enthusiastic about the material he teaches. Makes the course enjoyable and simple to understand. Definitely need to take any class with this man. One of the best there is in this school.
He is a great professor who is patient and takes time out of class to answer questions. He adds analogies to help students understand the material as well. Homework is mandatory and tedious but worth doing. His exams are fair and always have one proof. If you know the basics, you should be able to figure things out to do well on them.
Tons of time-consuming HW. Front row duty forces you to come to class. Tests are crazy since he covers a lot of material, never gives hints on what to expect on the exams. There are always annoying proofs on his exams and definitions that require filling in the blanks. Final was really hard since he wrote some of it! No curving just like his peers!
Never there during office hours, doesn't reply to emails, doesn't give any hints or practice exams. He said on the syllabus that a later exam grade can replace an earlier exam grade if the grade was higher. Second exam had to be curved because of a firealarm so he went back on his own words. Avoid him, that's the best advice I've got.
Don't be deceived by his seemingly chill personality. He is an assassin when it comes to exams. Know every single proof in the text and the notes to stand a chance. Also, understand ALL HW problems. He is one of the hardest math profs I came across in CCNY. He is a genius at math but not a genius at making people like math.
Prof. Cleary has a generous exam policy (replaces a test grade if you do better on a later exam; doesn't work backwards). There is front-row duty, which counted as your participation grade; as well as 15 HWs. The final, (though departmental, he made it) was HORRIBLE that the other sections had a curve. He didn't curve & that impacted most of us!
He is very clear and enthusiastic about what he teaches. Goes through material really fast. If you miss a class be sure to learnt it. Linear's pblms are long itself and expect a lot of HW if u r taking him. No partial credit, no curving and no consideration, in one word harsh. Set aside extra 5-6 hrs for HW's for Linear Algb disregarding the prof.
I did pretty well (B+ range) on the class exams but the final killed me. He wrote it and did not curve it just for his class. It brought me down a lot. He is an ok teacher, it's obvious he likes math and is passionate about it, but if you just want a decent grade and don't care about lin alg don't take him.
The course is VERY DENSE. He brought up previous chapters to reinforce new topics constantly. This confused me in terms of learning the new material, especially the vector analysis portions where I got a lot of the theorems mixed up. He tended to cover things from homework until the halfway point of class, and then rushed through the new lesson.
Cleary is a great math professor. He really makes math come alive and is very lively. I learned so much from him. Yes tests may be tough but its okay if you study and do all your homeworks. The proofs on his tests are very easyyy!! You will really work for your grade tho. And the dropped quiz really helps. The only thing i hated is front row duty
He's a pretty good professor. I found his tests to be pretty tough but in the end I got a B-. I could have done better. However, I don't get the point of front row duty. Gives people a chance to participate or something, but people that have front row duty don't even participate anyway. It's always the same few who talk, no matter who's in the fron
Ehh he's OKAY... nothing more really. The lectures are a bit fast and confusing. Exams start off simple enough but become quite hard by the end, which pairs badly with his grade replacement policy. He's also VERY eager to avoid students, if you ask him even a simple question after class he avoids eye contact and gives a one word answer.
His lectures consists mostly of him regurgitating the textbook onto the board. He tries to simplify the topics but does so rather terribly and leaves most very confused. I had to rely mostly on the textbook and homeworks to pass his exams. He is very stubborn when it comes to grading so don't expect a curve on anything.
Don't listen to the reviews below! He rushes through material to complete the entire course work, homework assigned 3x a week minimum, exams do not reflect homework material. The biggest issue is that he did not realize that students grades are a reflection of how you teach and showed no concern or regard for students when approached. Do not take!!
He's a knowledgeable man who knows the material well, but presents them in a quick manner during lectures. He comes off easy going and jokes sometimes. He grades ok, as if an answer wrong will guarantee you half credit with appropriate work. His hw was a bit of a hassle with the new tested hw system, mymathlab, but overall it was ok.
He goes through the material very quickly, so sometimes it may be hard to follow up, but not always. He's fair and does care for his students. Be prepared to work a lot and be dedicated. The homeworks can become very tiring, since he assigns a lot, but in the end they did help a bit. Also, don't be late. He starts right on the dot.
He loves to joke around during lectures which makes it enjoyable a bit. He gives a lot of homework that's long to complete. He expects you to know what the tests are going to cover and is quiet about it. He dosent curve but has a generous exam policy in which a higher test score can replace an earlier one. I find him to be very tough and hard.
I have taken 6 math profs in CCNY and Cleary is rock bottom. He has a blank face in his office hours. So, if you have a personal problem, he won't attempt to help you. He knows the material but can't teach it. His handwriting is chicken scratch. His exams are hard & there's no curve. FYI, front row duty is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of.
Excellent instructor with clear explanations. He was better than any other math teacher I had. I wish I had him for 202.
One of the better math ones at CCNY and I had some good ones. Would take him again in a heartbeat but now I'm done with math.
He is great at explaining and making jokes in class. However, he is strict in grading, writes chicken scratch on the board and the final was harder than the previous ones and demanded more from the students. He didn't curve the final.
He is a terrible professor. He seems great and genuinely interested in what he teaches, however, he is a harsh grader. Minuses 2-5 points for an answer he "didn't see" when the answer was clearly stated for the specific problems in question. Two. He didn't curve the hardest final given recently by the Department. Also, he writes like a 5 year old.
He is hard, but he is fair. He expects a lot, but he is very clear about what he expects. As he put it, "we've never seen this before so we run away screaming. No we don't, because we're math 392 students." His lectures can be a bit frantic but he keeps you engaged.
He is a really good professor but you have to practice outside of class a lot. MATLab is a pain in the ass and he will give you a final on that. But his way of teaching and explaining is amazing. WebWork is annoying as well but you can use that for extra practice. PLEASE PRACTICE ON YOUR OWN!!
Calc 2. Material isn't that hard, but his exams are extremely theoretical, time-crunched, not curved, multiple answer with (no joke) 15-30 choices (multiple can be correct). No partial credit but must submit work. Reserves 30m-1h of exam days for lecturing and gives whats left for the actual exam. Very harsh and poor at explaining material. Avoid.
Do not take him. His lectures are too fast paced, and even skips computational steps which makes his examples hard to follow. His exam policy is one of the worst. No backtracking, 15-20 choices in a single question, too little time, requires supporting work which may hurt or benefit your grade, doesn't offer partial credit, nor does he curve.
Professor Cleary is punctual, productive, & prepared to answer questions before, during and after class. Sounds great, right? NOPE. Think again. Spring 2021 was his first time teaching Calc II since at least 2008. It was rough. Lectures were sloppy and meaningless. Pretends to care about our technical difficulties. Exams were a sham and punishing.
worst professor I have ever taken at CCNY, Please avoid at all cost. Exams are the worst, unable to backtrack. Each question had at least 15-30 choices and only 1 hour to complete the exam. I had him for Cal 2
If you barely managed to pass the pre-requisite calculus class, be sure to review common derivatives and integrals (it's immensely useful) and devote some time outside of class to study the material. (I passed with a B without paying attention to any of his lectures, but the time I spent cramming for the tests was not worth muting his lectures).
He is one of the nicest professor I have ever seen. He always teach us the materials and make them very interesting to his student. I highly recommend him for Calculus II
I took this class as a hybrid option, meaning in person tests and online lectures. Math 212 is a very difficult class, in that everything moves so quickly. He is a very fair grader, in that he makes sure to give partial credit if you showed correct steps or work. You need to dedicate a LOT of time outside class to do well, but it was a good exp.
His lectures are fine. Calculus is hard and he points out things that might be hard. The only thing is that in every exam, you will be expected to ask him every question you got wrong. You will have to find solutions by yourself. It would be nice to hand out exam solutions and check by ourselves, but it will not happen.
I was scared going into this class after reading some of the other posts on here, but most of them were wrong. Although his handwriting is horrible, his lectures are easily followable and I feel like he wants to make sure everyone in the class is understanding the material. But I also had to devote A LOT of time because it was very practice based
Math 212 is a very hard class and it's important to understand the concepts and the practice problems outside of the class every week. Prof Cleary was a great lecturer and was easy to understand if you paid attention. He extends hw deadlines often but don't expect curves or extra credits in exams. Exams (in person) were pretty straightforward too.
His lectures were unbearable while online. The only fair thing is his grading policy which is 10% participation, 10% homework, 40% for 3 exams, and 40% the final exam. You have to purchase Pearson MyLab in order to complete the homework. I do not recommend.
I couldn't find any worth going to his lectures and had to resort to self-study. Mumbles, makes irrelevant jokes (that weren't even funny), and atrocious hand-writing. Don't take him.
Loved the guy. Made the class more enjoyable to be in with his jokes and teaching style. Very interested and knowledgeable in what in does. Tests are always difficult and you need to study a lot for this course, but if you study well, you will 100% pass. Better than Sergiy because Sergiy was so monotone for me...
PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED BY GOOD REVIEWS!! I just had to withdraw from this class not only because it was difficult but also because he is a terrible teacher. First off, he writes like a kindergartener so half the time no one understood what he wrote. Second, even if I wanted to ask what he wrote or what something meant he would keep going.
He really enjoys teaching Calclus and he cares about the students
There are a lot of ass kissers and people looking for revenge. so my honest opinion. IDK what happened to him during the middle of the semester but after the 1st he was every lenient of the grading, the Test are basically your whole grade. However, he is a great lecturer even if his hand writing is a little messy.
Wonderful professor! If you want to learn, he's great at teaching. Make sure you study for tests thoroughly because they can be tricky. Makes jokes very entertaining.
Prof explains topics well and keeps lectures entertaining. He gives many chances to participate and is available to answer questions. The one negative is that he doesn't curve. BUT, he gives generous partial credit and lowered the bar significantly to get a C. Instead of curving a 64 up to a 73, he made a 64 = C. Same thing if you think about it.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE OTHER OPTIONS. THE WROST. HE GIVES YOU SO MANY CHAPTERS TO COVER FOR MIDTERMS AND ONLY FEW SHOW UP. HOMIE DOESN'T BREATHE WHILE TEACHING ;). ALL THE REVIEWS ARE FAKE..
He is very good at teaching. It may seem he is rushing at times, but he goes slower than other professors despite there being so many topics to cover in Calc 3. He cracks jokes many times to keep the class entertained. Know your quadric surfaces and be very very strong in most trigonometric identities. Spend 2 hours studying daily for Calc 3.
Professor Cleary has to be one of the most knowledgeable math professors I've ever seen and learned from. His lectures are amazing but tests are challenging. The best way to study would be to redo hw questions and doing sample final questions as they tend to be repeated. Don't wait till the last day and you have to do practice questions to pass.
This professor was hands down one of the best lecturers I've had in this school, not only was he very enthusiastic about teaching our class and he made it interesting while joking around with us. However you will have to spend time out of class self-teaching because some topics were very difficult and not easy to follow in class.
Professor is amazing himself. You can tell he has a passion for math. Tries to entertain the class once in a while. His teaching skills is quite amazing with his unique examples. The only difficulty ig is his messy handwriting. Otherwise, he's an amazing professor to have. Very highly intelligent. However, you may regret thinking the class is easy.
He truly cares about his students.
He's so petty with test grading. He barely gave ANY partial credits. When grading, he doesn't care if you understand the concept, he only looks for the right answer. His lectures are extremely fast paced and hard to understand. I didn't pretty well in calc 2 (A) but coming into his class was really rough
Doesnt rlly know how to teach but he likes the content himself
Tough Grader and not good at teaching.
Professor is knowledgeable and lectures are not too bad, but he is a very harsh grader. Little partial credit on exams. Based on the exam rubric, you get more points for putting correct answers with no work than if you had full work with a slight mistake in the answer. He doesn't care about you passing the class or doing well and makes it tough.
This professor is very knowledgeable but he has no empathy for his students and grades harsh. His exams were annoying with the theoretical questions. He does extend deadlines for the homework but that's pretty much the only nice thing about him. Expect to learn a lot of material because there is ALOT to learn for each exam.
I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk I hate the way that you dress I hate the way you sneak diss, if I catch flight, it's gon' be direct
Not a good professor AT ALL! Honestly so much of his content went into theory and if you get those wrong, max you can get on the exam is a 90. Offers ZERO partial credit, and assigns a lot of homework.
LOTS of theory in lectures. 20% of exams are theory. Hes pretty cool dude but hella petty with grading and partials. His classes arent a great representation of what can appear on the exams. I recommend looking at older exams and studying those. He responds very fast through emails and seems to care.
before enrolling into his class, pay attention to what other reviewers gave him and their grade, do not walk in with high expectations for your final overall grade. tests are unbelievably theory heavy (despite this being calculus). test content will only include a few of the numerous chapters in lectures. extremely conservative w/partial credit.
Based off his previous reviews I thought he would have been a great prof, but I was sadly mistaken. This semester he was absolutely heartless with his grading, it was actually crazy. Take at your own risk.
not a good prof whatsoever
Better attend them lectures, Do those practice problems, and and make sure you don't mess up a single step on them tests. Even then, pray. Mid Professor.
Doesn't care about students. Don't know what happened to him after 2023 but it's like he feeds off making this class more difficult. Also kind of unorganized in his teaching. Clearly intelligent but not a good professor. E permit or take different professor if possible
AVOID. Idk what happened to this professor honestly but he's harsher than before apparently. He's passionate and clearly an intellectual person but he doesn't care/no empathy for his students. Inconsistent and stingy with partial credit. His lectures are.. ok but unorganized. The only reason I learned anything this semester is youtube.
His drawings are extremely helpful for vectors, regions of integration, line integrals, etc. Very open to questions and always answers the best he can. Quite the tough grader. Exams are long/tedious. Expect
