Good teacher, helpful, very very funny, I injoyed going to class.

He was one of the coolest, funniest laid-back professors I had. He's extremely knowledgable and fun. Cool shirts too.

I was enrolled in his American Literature class (English 40B). I really enjoyed it. He is funny, open minded, and really gets you thinking about the material.

Thought the worse, before taking the class. He is so cool, just show up and turn in the assignments. I never saw my papers back, but everyone should be able to pass the class. He does talk a lot so be prepare to entertain yourself during class.

not the greatest, but tolerable. seems to be only proficient in his forte and nothing else. he's funny at times, but appears to be intimidating. and sometimes it feels as though he looks down on you-- as if, that your answer is good, but his is better.

I took this in the winter and even though there was alot of reading, he made it fun. And he explained the reading SO well. I just dont like his socratic exams (in a circle).

Good teacher, nice and pretty funny, he's very helpful and very laid back, makes you buy cheap books (even new they're cheap), it was fun learning about the difrent stories we read and gives you good background info on everything but he has a very strong opinion on everything and people eventually are afraid to give opinions

Mr. Donnell is the man. Hes a really good teacher with a damn good heart who will try and help you alot. Take him for english 1A. its not that his class was easy, i got a B. but hes a ddamn good teacher.

What i loved the most about his classes was the fact that he makes you think. The books/poetry that he chooses are exceptional pieces or work and cover a varity of themes. If you want a teacher that is funny and fair to all his students, oh, and love to talk, definetly take donnell for his English courses. his class is fun, and very enjoyable

He explains the readings better than most of us could. I enjoy the class, but you have to have an open mind. Don't take the class just cuz you need it-take something else then. You should only take it if you want to, otherwise you'll go crazy.

Mr. Donnell is a great teacher. He gives you alot of info about the stories you read. Tests are easy. He is very relaxed about your essays. As long as you are respectful, and turn your papers in on time,you will get an A. He plays devils advocate alot, so be ready to stand your ground when you give your opinions. Don't sway because he does.

I read the reviews on this site and took him. It was a good choice. It's a pretty easy class, and you actually learn. Highly recommended.

He's really into Romanticism, but at times you want to fall asleep because he will assign reading and then just use the whole next class to read it all out loud. Once he read us a long ass poem that took up an hour of class and when he was done he just said "well, i don't know that much about this poem, so lets read the next one"

Mr. Donnell is cool, he is (or was in my case) very understanding, and would make class fun with his rants. Sometimes it was boring though maby it was th 3 hr class.

He is just a cool guy and seems more like a friend than a teacher! The class can get VERY boring sometimes but talking about books for 3 hours is not exactly a fun thing. The mid-term and final are very easy but boring! He is fair and cool. TAKE HIM!!

This teacher is the best teacher ive had in my life. ive never been so interested in lit b4 now thanks to him i actually understand it & enjoy it! GREAT teacher, friendly, there for u, funny and the assignments and tests are very straightforward and direct. You learn so much and actually have an understanding of it STRONGLY RECOMMENDED! He is an awesome teacher.. he explains thngs in the stories they you may of never noticed and he changes you point of view on things. i HATED to socratic exams, but as long as you know wut your talkin about then you'll do fine. i would take him again if i had the chance..

Nice guy, yet is out for organized religion from day 1 and sticks all Christianity in it. Still, a strong intellectual and teaches the material well. Grading seems lenient, as I did ok. Very clear in explaining the text and is an amusing fellow. Overall one of the better English teachers

Prof. Donnell is a great teacher. There is a lot of reading to do for homework, but if you participate and take notes it's easy to do well in his classes. I'd definatly recommend him. He's nice and a good teacher and makes English interesting. Plus the Socratic exams are much better than taking an in class test. I had him for 15B and 1A.

I really enjoyed being in Mr. Donnell's class. He's a lot of fun, his assignments are very clear and there is no reason to ask twice because you'll get it the first time. I used to fear Literature but now I just love it. I find myself reading all kinds of literary works by Edgar Allen Poe and Kate Chopin. It was a joy being in his class.

This teacher is allright I guess...I took him for summer but he is extremely boring...his class feel like forever in the summer or winter. But his not hard or easy. A lot of reading though and some what writing.

Very flexible, just because you interpret a story one way he doesn't tell you it's wrong as long as you have evidence on why. The socratics aren't as bad either, just type a couple of pages and read your respones to the questions.

I like Mr. Donnell as a teacher. He's very cool. No written tests! Just turn in all assigned homework, and speak 2x in his socratic tests and you pass! Great teacher, good sense of humor and very smart! Take him! An A+ teacher.

Whenever we discuss a story/ poem in class, he always has a very good interpretation and u understand his perspective very well, plus you wont get bored cos he's funny. Let me just say that this guy is the MAN! for English Literature. He interperets it very well and can easily relate it to other students viewpoints. Oh my! mr. donnell is the best english teacher at elco. he is so helpful and listens to students opp about a perticuler topic or dicussion. But you have to really think critically on the novels to understand them.THat is why it is a critical thinking class. Had an A+ in the class and learned a lot from the class.

I had such a great time in Professor Donnell's class! He doesn't have standard tests, but rather, he gives you a set of questions for which you write outlines, which you will then use in a roundtable Socratic seminar where the entire class openly discusses and answer the questions. Basically, if you make a statement, back it up. Would take again.

Professor Donnell is a man who generates passion amongst his pupils. In ancient Greece you could be sentenced to death for proselytizing false information to the youth. Prof.Donnell will never tell you what to think, instead he makes you prove or give credence to your thoughts and feelings about literature and life. Amazing instructor, cooler dude.

Mr. Donnell is a great teacher. He made learning fun again. I was actually able to go to his class with the desire to learn and voice my opinon on the topics we discussed in class. I recommend him to anyone! He's so full of knoweldge and truly values his students opinions.

He is a good teacher. He was sick during our class so he missed alot of classes. But he didnt take it out on our grades. wink. But he is very opinionated and you have to do at least average on the essays. On a scale from 1 to 10 I give him a strong 8.

donnell is so chill. easy grader on papers but still leaves room for improvement. he likes to discuss sorta controversial topics that are brought up by the books (in the 1c class)but he never forces his opinion on people. awesome prof! btw if you get the whole class rallied behind you, you can often push the due date of a paper back. :)

Eng 1B is the class I took with him. He is very smart,and talkative guy. He makes you feel comfortable and encourages people to talk. He can get off track, but his conversation is interesting. Overall, I recommend him as a teacher.

Donnell is a very interesting teacher. I loved the books we read during our literature and film class. We watched the movies of the books. He did cancel a Scene Analysis during the summer course, we basically discussed the book in class. Reading is a must. I got an A by doing all the work, lenient grader.

He's ok. His class is pretty easy just read the stories he assigns and do ur essays. Final is pretty easy.

Donnell is annoyingly easy. He assigns a heavy workload and takes role every day, but you hardly need to keep up with the reading or attend class regularly. He likes to talk a lot, so bring something to do during class. Read the books & some of the poems/stories for socratic questions and do your best on the final. He's very understanding. Easy A.

Donnell is an exceptionally good teacher. Lives up to the name on his web site "The Lunatic Fringe." For Eng 1C students, the focus is race. If you are easily offended in matters of racism, particularly African American students, the lesson is very valuable. Donnell's methods are unconventional but not unsound. A very unique instructor.

Cool professor, but lots of work. There's about 3-4 essays and 2 mideterms. If you're not good withessays just go see him and he'll help you out. The midterms are pretty simple all you have to do is talk. He's a really nice guy ;)

Pretty chill, intimidating and easy teacher. Very intelligent and he literally memorized ALL the stories assigned. 3 essays, 1 research paper and two "socratic" sessions which you are to speak up to the class about two of the six questions asked and explain your claim. It may be hard for those who doesn't like speaking up. But overall a great prof.

Took him for Lit & Film over the summer. All he demands of his students is that they read the texts and show up to class. His lectures are boring at times -- sometimes he will go on an hour-long diatribe -- but he's usually pretty funny, and you can tell he enjoys his job. He seems to grade on completion, so don't sweat it if you're a bad writer.

This is a very relaxed class. He is very relatable and flexible. There were only 3 assignments in my class. 2 socratic test outlines, and a research paper. The socratic tests are fun and easy. Just make sure you give yourself time to do it. I did them in one night, and it was hard, but I got a B. Take him. You won't regret it. :)

Donnell is an awesome professor to take, one of my favorites at El Camino. He tries to maintain a structure to the class but his passion for the literature and how much he really just wants to get to know his students on an honest level tends to move the syllabus around quite a bit. He is one of ECC's best professors. He's passionate about his subject and it shows. Really, all you have to do is READ the assignments and participate in the discussion. He gets very frustrated when you don't show any effort. If you don't want to take tedious quizzes, participate in discussion!

I say it's mandatory to go to class cause he goes over everything in detail. Stuff that sounded foreign before totally made sense when he went over it. He doesn't require alot of writing, but DOES expect you to do well on assignments. I would totally recommend him. He knows his stuff & was very entertaining. The 3 hour class went by like nothing!

The teacher was great, it was an interesting class and he made it seem even better. He is one of the better teachers at El Camino for sure. He showed some homosexual pictures during the course what I didn't want to see but I geuss it was part of the text or something. Overall a good class made better by the teacher. I liked this professor very much. Had him for what might be the last winter session. Involves everyone in class discussions and participation. Welcoming and insightful in those discussions during class. Defines the college-level thesis driven essay and research paper, and its significance for future jobs and universities.Read lotsa stories!Was fun!

This professor is a gem, he truly changed my life and formed a passion for me I didn't know I had! He is so helpful, very caring, and funny! He is very gifted in the material and knows his stuff. He is a professor working with you not against you, he wants to see students succed!

3 essays, 1 research paper, 2 Socratic sessions. You only have to speak up twice and you can read directly off your paper so it doesn't suck too bad if you're shy. :) He goes into extreme detail when discussing the readings so make sure to take notes because they'll help you later on. I never dreaded going to class, definitely take him if you can.

Good class if you want to write. You will be challenged to write a strong analytical paper, and to develop critical thinking. This class is a must for non-fiction and even fiction writers. Mr. Donnell was always willing to critique my work; I am a much better writer than before. Take this course seriously if you plan on writing in your career.

Professor Donnell is great, I took his class this summer and honestly it was great. HAving to be in class at 8am during the summer sucks but it was not that bad having to go to a cool guy like him. Definitely take him, his essays are simple and the reads are good, also the tests are super easy to pass!

Donnell was helpful and definitely pushes you to do your best work. You read short stories instead of a book which is great and he only gives a few essays that are graded. You get a socratic exam and its very informal and easy. Definitely a teacher to take for english.

Def one of the best professors in Elco. Passionate; very inspiring without being rudebrasharrogant (personality wise, one of the realest people you'll ever encounter). You'll enjoy his class even if you absolutely hate English. Hilarious too. If you're fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take his class, do it. You won't regret it.

He takes attendance. He's very entertaining and makes the class goes by fast. Take advantage and go to his office hours to get feedback on your essay before you turn it in. He really gets into it and it will give you the best possible grade. He's fair.. If you can't make it he will help after class too.

While at El Co I took professor Donnell for just about every English course he offered. He is the best professor I had at ECC. He's caring, passionate, knows the material and creates a learning environment that never puts the student down. He truly loves what he does and it shows and makes it so much more enjoyable to be in his courses.

He is a cool guy. He made a 3 hour night class bearable because he is actually interesting to listen to. Doesn't grade to hard on the essays just make sure to put some effort into them. As long as you are on top of things an A is possible. would take again.

He's cool and easy to talk to, which makes class discussion all the easier. But he's not a serious grader and he rarely stays on-topic. If you'd prefer to go through the typical list of readings or are looking to improve your writing skills, I wouldn't take him. If you want an unusually enjoyable, laid-back class, then you should.

sean is really cool i took him during summer we read 2 books and it was about an essay a week and 2 socratic seminars. it's a lot of work but just keep up with it and turn it on time & you'll pass the class. he's easy to approach when asking for help & he's super laid back & his humor is messed up in a funny way.

Professor Donnell was overall an okay teacher. His lectures were interesting and all you really had to do was sit and listen and participate occasionally since he does most of the talking. If his class wasn't easy, I would say that he wasn't a good teacher. A bit disorganized; he skipped out on the midterm and we rarely followed the syllabus.

Pretty chill class, no tests or quizzes just a lot of reading. Had to read 3 books for socratic at end of the semester, had 2-3 essays but topics are easy. He discusses the books pretty much all of class, he also takes a long time to grade and procrastinates a lot but overall would recommend

Professor Donnell is an amazing professor. His classes mainly involved discussing the assigned readings, very in depth but helped a lot during the oral final! His essay topics were fair, some were easy and some took time to process. Overall, I would recommend. You will not find another better English professor at El Camino than him.

Sean is one of the best professors at ElCo. He assigns really interesting short stories and allows total freedom in your essays. I cant say enough good things about him but he definitely is on your side 100%. Hes approachable and super helpful, will break anything down if you're having trouble. Really really chill person. Great Professor. I would definitely recommend taking him. He cares about his students and genuinely wants you to learn. As well as understand the material. I enjoyed his insight and our class discussions. Additionally the three mandatory books we read in class were really interesting.

Easy A honestly. Didn't have to buy the book since all we did was read poems & discuss them in class (poems were available online -- lets you search them up using phone). He does all the talking so you don't have to worry about participation. Less than 3 essays/hw assigned throughout. Doesn't care if you're late. Really chill class. Recommended.

Great professor, his not hard yet I recommend to always read his stories ! They are pretty good!! He also gives great feedback!!! We did have about 3 writing assignments I like the fact that he gives a bit extra time to finish assignments.

We didnt get much work. Majority of the class time is spent talking about concepts and one of the 3 books that we've read. Donnell has a really great personality and is willing to give you his opinion on just about anything. He is, however, very forgetful when it comes to certain assignments. -- one of those "laid back" classes

He does give a lot of papers but he gives a lot of time and he always extends deadlines. Hes hilarious. Thats for sure. He doesnt expect a lot from you but he can be unorganized. Other than that, hes great!

Professor Donnell is amazing!! He cares about his students. He gives three paper with lot of time and helps you if you need help, however the only downside is that he grades paper late. Just show up to class, do your work, and you will pass the class with an A. The only reason I got a B is because I missed two weeks of class then I miss other class

IN CLASS THIS GUY WAS GREAT! ONCE THE PANDEMIC HIT, ITS LIKE HE WAS ON VACATION WHILE IN CLASS. HE DID'NT RESPOND TO ANY STUDENTS AT ALL, AND NEVER GRADED OUR PAPERS TIL THE END OF THE SEMESTER. STUDENTS WOULD TALK BEFORE HE GOT TO THE ZOOM MEETING ALL COMPLAINING ABOUT HIS LACK OF PRO ACTIVITY. HES DOPE IN PERSON, BUT AVOID THE CLASS ONLINE W/ HIM

Professor Donnell was one of the best English professors I've ever had. It's easy to tell that he genuinely cares and is passionate about what he teaches which makes the class much more enjoyable. He's always willing to help students out in after hours and by email/canvas inbox. Work load was cake. Such a great and funny guy to have as a prof.

He does return grades a little late, but is helpful you just need to ask. If you need more help than is provided go to the writing center! We had great discussions in class.

Professor Donnell is highly knowledgeable and personable. Choose him to develop critical thinking and gain diverse perspectives. Homework is paced effectively for timely essay completion.

I took his English 1-A during Fall, then 1-C during winter. Here's my what I can say, Sean is a great professor when it comes to it. He engages and jokes around with the class, he enjoys when the class participates, and he gives great feedback when it comes to grading. I did roughly 20-25 hours per week for work, plus his class so Ik you'll pass.

Sean was an excellent prof, I especially enjoyed his class discussions as he is very open minded and funny! Ask for help if you need it, and you will pass the class easily. He does grade things super late tho but gives good feedback.

Great professor

I took Professor Donnell in person and he was great. Not too many papers and for the ones that he did assign he was relatively lenient with a very clear grading structure. Raise your hand in class and speak up, otherwise he might just call on someone. Overall, great guy, wish I could take the class again

I took this class in the winter and thoroughly enjoyed it. A lot of great discussions came out of the material we were reading and I got a lot out of the class. Professor Donnell definitely keeps students engaged and is one of the most entertaining and comedic instructors I have ever had. I 100% recommend.

took him for Winter25, and in just 1month i was already sad for the class to end. hes hilarious, very lenient, doesnt mind late work if theres a genuine reason and you make up for it. attendance isnt strict, though he takes roll. do read closely & join Socratics. if you have anxiety, hes chill—lets you speak comfortably after class. def recommend!

fair warning, the entirety of class reading was hemingway. i didn't mind, i knew almost nothing and hemingway prior and he doesn't glorify the guy or anything, but just so you know. all texts provided, no need to buy anything. very chill, open-minded environment, lenient with late work, and fun to talk to, especially if you're an english person.

Awesome English teacher, very interactive with students and is also very interesting. Definitely has a lot of stories to tell, sadly i didn't get to hear all of them. Great Class if you're just starting out or trying to fulfill required courses.

Great Professor, very minimal work, shifts due dates to best benefit students.

I really enjoyed his class, he likes participation and for people to laugh with him. The assignments are not terrible and he accepts late work. The lectures mostly consist of him reading the whole time so you don't ever need to read outside of class.
