Sean is fantastic and fun. TAKE. HIS. COURSE. Dude is a full on dork who's so excited by the material but that makes it so much more engaging and interesting (you'll find yourself enjoying chemistry whaaat)
Man is an absolute goofball. Loves chemistry almost as much as he loves his daughter. Manages to keep all 200+ students engaged all class. Def take his course.
Depends on your learning style. I hated his class for the first couple weeks because we have assigned seating (What is this high school???) and have to work on these things called POGIL exercises which is basically another $40 on a book no other classes require. He's a good lecturer and engaging but sometimes he only lectures for 15 minutes a class
teaching style is not for me. every lecture we have POGIL groups which are group learning activities so you have assigned seats for the semester which SUCKS. if you have a bad group then you'll hate every lecture. when we aren't doing group stuff & he's just lecturing I almost fall asleep every time. he's very animated & proud of being a chem nerd.
Sean is by far my favorite professor at Pitt so far. He is obviously super excited about the topics he teaches and does his best to make chemistry as fun as possible for all his students. 10/10 would recommend.
He is literally one of my favorite professors ever and REALLY tries to make classes as engaging as possible. Even though he taught a POGIL class (which is NOT AT ALL effective) he really puts in the time and effort to try to make sure you understand. Definitely go to his office hours or stay after class to ask questions, he's the BEST
Ok honestly we had to do these things called POGIL which he was assigned into - it wasn't his choice - and it was absolutely not effective at all. He really tries to get around it and hates it himself but he is an absolute GEM. 10/10 would recommend.
Easily my favorite professor ever in my college career. He is so passionate about what he teaches and gives amazing advice about ANYTHING. I have so much respect for him; he focuses on more than just grades and cares for your understanding and even wellbeing. He is an amazing lecturer and makes his class super interesting. HIGHLY recommend!!!
Do not take unless absolutely necessary. There are much easier natural science gen eds so do not take this course unless you know FOR SURE you are doing bio major or chem major. Sean is forced to do POGIL exercises which are not helpful at all and tests have multiple choice questions that are tricky and worth 5 whole points. Not easy
Such a great prof! The POGILS we had to do sucked, but that wasn't his choice. Very passionate about chemistry and his students. Such an engaging lecturer. Lots of homework, but necessary in order to learn the topics. The class is difficult and you will have to work hard for your grade, but Sean really tries to help and make sure you understand.
Sean is a phenomenal teacher. Yes, POGIL is the majority of lecture, but I dont think that is a bad thing. Anyways, Sean is extremely enthusiastic and very understanding. I started this semester hating chemistry but thanks to him I enjoy the subject a lot now. You should definitely take him!
Sean is a great guy who really cares about each student. He wants students to understand the material, HOWEVER, with the use of Pogil, it is rather difficult to understand the material. Students are expected to fill out the activity pages without prior instruction and w/o going over the answers after. This was also Sean's 1st time teaching chem110
Very energetic and is an ok teacher but very fair grader. I took AP Chemistry in high school so his class was relatively easy for me. However, could be very confusing lecturer sometimes and I dislike the way he words certain things. I read the book in topics I didn't understand and I used homework and lecture power points to help me study.
Super nice guy and a very fair grader, Sean really loves his students and chemistry itself. He was always very excited about the material and just an all-around great guy. As previously mentioned POGIL is flawed, but Sean's tests are fair and class is helpful. If I could pass, so can you.
Sean is a really great chem professor. He typically teaches P-chem but he did really well with chem 1. Pogil is a terrible teaching tactic that he was kinda forced into teaching with but he did the best he could. Reading the textbook helps with the course a lot.
Sean is a great, fun guy but an iffy professor. If there's POGIL involved in your class you're basically screwed and have to teach yourself through the textbook and homework. However, he seems to actually be a really good teacher and is really passionate about chem in review sessions when there's no POGIL.
I thought I hated chem, but came out of Sean's class finding myself interested in topics I never liked before! Sean is willing to help his students succeed in every way. It took me until the end of the semester to understand how to prepare for exams, but I definitely learned from my mistakes and understand where I went wrong before. I learned a lot
Sean was my favorite professor from my first semester at Pitt. He is a great guy, always excited about teaching and truly wants his students to enjoy the class and learn. He tries to make the class as painless as possible and is extremely approachable with issues and concerns
Sean is a nice guy outside of class but his lectures are useless! Everyone hates POGIL (group activities during lecture) and he does not explain things unless people ask. His practice problems do not prepare you for the exams, and he only gets his good ratings from being a nice guy. You will need to learn all the material on your own.
Sean is a great guy & you can tell hes passionate about teaching & chem, but the tests were so unreasonably hard even if you go above & beyond to study. If you took AP Chem you will be better off. Quizzes will save your grade. POGILs suck and usually have nothing to do with the lecture. Teach yourself & use Khan academy if you want an average grade
Sean is a good guy but not the best teacher. POGILs are somewhat helpful for beginning a topic but generally a huge waste of class time. You are essentially paying thousands of dollars to teach yourself. Despite this, if you do the online homework and do every textbook problem that is assigned by Sean, you should do fine on the tests/quizzes.
Sean is a great guy and his love and appreciation for chemistry is very evident in his lectures. He truly wants everyone to understand the material. If you read the textbook, pay attention in lectures, and do every practice problem, you'll get an A. Only negative thing is the use of POGIL use in class. Not helpful. Much prefer traditional lecture.
An all around great guy if you get to talk to him outside of class. He is super passionate about chemistry and teaching he really wants the students to succeed. The free response questions arent graded by him but regrades make up for it. His teaching style however, I don't like. If you took AP or remember chem you are good. If not, get a tutor ASAP
Sean is a really nice guy but the way his class is taught through POGIL is hot garbage. You basically have to teach yourself. Worst class ever.
He is a very nice person but not a good teacher. If you took AP Chem you will do fine. If you didn't just be prepared to teach yourself, Pogil's teach you the material qualitatively but does not help for the tests which are mainly quantitative.
Sean isn't a bad choice for Chem 1, but beware that he teaches in a way that assumes you already know a lot about chemistry. I did not take AP Chem in high school, so most of the information was new to me and I had to teach it to myself. Most lectures involve doing activities with your lab group rather than listening and taking notes.
I HATED THIS CLASS. He barely ever taught, and when he did he was unclear and covered the least important material from the chapters. Most of the lecture time was spent doing POGIL, which are basically group activities that are wayyy easier than any test questions ever were (so they were useless). I pulled a B, but I learned it all on my own.
Solid for CHEM 0110. His lectures are kinda boring and don't explain why things are, but he's pretty enthusiastic and gen chem 1 material just isn't interesting. Pogil is annoying. Tests are easier than most other profs (except Morgan). Gives a midterm drop. If you've taken high school chem you're set - I dropped a 96. Often makes mistakes grading.
If you don't have a better option, take Sean. He is not a bad professor, however I did not enjoy his class. POGIL is horrible, and it seems like you only do it because it requires you buying his book. Exams are average, and you drop one so thats a plus.
Sean is not a good teacher. He relies too much on POGIL, which barely correlates to the exam material and is a flawed attempt at teaching. I would hate coming into lecture and relied on the TAs for help. I would strongly recommend someone else.
Sean is a great professor and very enthusiastic. He cares a lot about his students and the course is graded fairly (he drops your lowest midterm grade of the three tests). If you've taken AP chem, you will have no problem with this course. If not, you'll need the textbook because the POGILs may not be comprehensive enough to do well on the tests.
Sean doesn't really teach at all. He gives you POGIL assignments in class to do with students around you with little to no direction so I was pretty lost in this class. He's a nice man though he just doesn't care about students who don't have a chemistry background is what I got from taking him.
Hes the worst professor ever. He doesn't teach a single thing. He uses POGIL style which is where you basically get assigned a team and you guys have to figure out the lecture by yourself. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone at all do not pick this professor.
Honestly one of the worst profs ive had. Doesnt teach AT ALL. Awful awful awful teacher. Doesnt even try to teach, just assumes you already know the material
POGIL is awful. Unless you are already a chemistry genius don't take this professor. He assumes everyone has a good knowledge of chemistry I see people in other classes with different profs succeeding vastly more than under this prof. Seems like a nice guy, but jeez is he the worst prof/teacher I've had in my life. I highly suggest another pro f.
Honestly one of the WORST professors/teachers Ive had. If you are premed and you havent taken a chem class in over a year DO NOT take this class unless you are willing to spend 6+ hours EVERYDAY doing doing work for this class. Both Sean and his RAs not willing to help (in my experience). If you do take his class, PLEASE dont take Bio with it
SGR is certainly knowledgeable about chemistry but expects you to know everything about it because he barely lectures for 10 minutes in class and won't even answer questions in class. I relied on my TA to teach me stuff. He literally told us on the first day if we wanted to be taught how to do this stuff we should watch Khan Academy or Youtube.
Sean begins every class by lecturing for 5-10 minutes and then puts all students into assigned breakout rooms. EVERY class. You have to teach yourself in this class-- even while paying attention to his short lectures, it is very confusing because he goes over selective questions and it is disorganized. HE DOES NOT TEACH!
This class was so hard for me. He assumed we knew all the basics, and while I had taken honors chemistry in high school, I was not prepared for this class. He put us into breakout rooms every single class and made us work on POGILs. This was not efficient for me, and I felt like I wasn't learning anything. I ended up getting a tutor.
This class was the biggest waste of my time. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. You will end up teaching everything to your self; Sean does not teach a stitch of chemistry. You teach yourself. Do yourself a favor and do not take Sean. You have to learn POGIL style which you teach yourself with a book.
Please dont take his class! Everything is POGIL and you will end up having to learn everything yourself. Going to his lectures have been the biggest waste of my time. He does not teach anything. Unless your willing to study chemistry for 5 hours a day yourself good luck, I find my physics class a lot more enjoyable and doable than Seans class.
Sean should definitely be a last resort option. You teach yourself everything in the class. Sean does not deserve the credit and the rating he has as far as I am concerned. Avoid him at all costs unless you are confident u can learn everything in ap chemistry by yourself.
Everything is rushed. I havent learned one thing from Sean; Ive learned everything by myself. Out of everyone I know taking chemistry, Sean is the worst. Wouldnt recommend him to anyone. Spend everyday studying and studying for his class. Everyone of my friends in his class think says lectures are the biggest waste of their time.
Sean is one of the nicest teachers I've ever had, but I had a hard time in his class. He teaches with the POGIL method. It would probably be great in person, but it was very difficult online. We would go into breakout rooms with worksheets and we didn't have any actual lecture. So if you're planning on taking this class online, I wouldn't.
Sean is a great teacher who really shows a passion for chemistry. The pogil style can be quite difficult at first, but when you get used to it, it really gives you are better understanding of the subject matter rather than the teaching just spewing information to you. Test and quizzes are all multiple choice and are really fair IMO. I Recommend him
Every class is a group project. if you get a bad group youre screwed for this class. wouldnt reccomend this teacher. He doesnt teach for the life of him. Lectures are entirely up to you. The quizzes are easy and the 4 midterms are extremely difficult. Sean assumes that you know everything about chemistry (like the basics).
Sean is a funny guy and all. But he does not teach. The homeworks and the quizzes do not prepare you for the midterm. The midterms are very hard. If you dont know a lot about chemistry or its ur first time taking chemistry dont take his class. Do ur self a favor.
Sean is the limiting reagent of my life. The tests are extremely difficult and he doesn't lecture at all. The textbook is the only thing that keeps me going. TAs can be helpful but that's not enough. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Every other professor is better I promise you.
Don't let the ratings fool you, Sean is so nice but that does not translate to good grades. Sean does not teach a single thing, and may as well not be a professor. In order to pass I have taught myself everything from the textbook and had to schedule tutoring on my own time. Please save yourself and do not take this class it is a waste.
In this class, my beaker is half-empty. Please avoid this class at all costs. This has ruined this semester for me, It has forced me to do so much work on my own it might as well be a full time job. He should be a therapist because he is so nice, he just should never teach another day of his life, oh wait he doesn't teach. NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS
This class is taught by POGIL. which means everything you learn will either be with your group or on your own time. Although it is very stressful, the tests are very fair. You just have to work for it. And the work you put it will be the grade you get.
Not recommended for online. Weekly quiz/midterm, mostly multiple-choice (no partial credit); no backtracking allowed on assessments. He doesn't lecture, instead using POGIL, which is like DIY learning. We tried asking for lectures, but he said POGIL is better. We don't even get answer keys after, so there's no way of knowing if we got it right.
Sean's class is hard because he doesn't teach well online, but it is still manageable to get an A in his class. He is definitely a better option than most chem professors for this class, his midterms are hard but if you study well you should be fine. Most of all he is super caring and will go back and individually hand grade all tests.
This class was difficult. Even if you know chemistry, you'll most likely still need to read the textbook to keep up. The chapters are very long but helpful. Weekly quizzes are 4-5 questions and the 4 midterms are pretty hard. All you do during class is work in groups on worksheets. Sapling homework and Packback discussion help your grade.
Sean seems like a great person, but the way he runs his class is atrocious. He'll do a 15 minute lecture (on a good day), and the rest of class is POGIL worksheets in a breakout room. If you get a bad group, don't bother going to class. The exams were rough too: 10 questions, 10 points each. He is very helpful if you reach out, but it's up to you.
Seans very nice but not a good prof. quizzes are anywhere from 4-10 Qs and are 10 pts and midterms are 10 Qs worth 100 pts, no partial credit. doesnt teach so if you dont have a good chem background, youll have to teach yourself. If taken with bio, its a nightmare unless you took AP chem. Sadly not the worst chem prof, but I dont recommend
The POGILs can be quite annoying but they are helpful if you continue to go over them. I think that he got the point that we wanted some lectures later on and he catered to that need. The amount of different stuff you have to do makes it easier for you to make up your mistakes. You can tell he loves chemistry cause he's very excited in class.
Absolutely the worst
Do not take this class if he is using the pogil system it's a disaster. You get put into groups with random people over zoom breakout rooms. Don't buy the textbook either it's useless. I ended up skipping lecture and watching the organic chemistry tutor on youtube and that's how I learned the material. Really nice guy but with pogil not good.
Sean is a great and insanely intelligent guy who really wants his students to succeed. The POGIL activities aren't ideal, but I heard that some other gen chem 1 professors at Pitt use them too. He is super understanding if you reach out to him outside of class. As for gen chem 1, take Sean. Overall, a funny and lively guy who genuinely cares.
Avoid if you can unless youre already really good at chem. I went to his office hours and cried like every week only for him to be barley any help. Hes a nice guy but is an awful professor, especially during a pandemic. I hated my life and barely passed despite studying very efficiently and often for the class and bio. Lowered grades last minute
He does teach in the *put into groups* manner but he still partially lectures. Just make sure you figure out what you're doing when you do the homework and you should be fine. There were 4 midterms and he dropped the lowest one. The class is structured for success and has wiggle room. He really enjoys the subject and is really nice to students
doesnt teach nuff said
Every class was a breakout room with really basic questions. The homework was a lot harder and and you would have to teach yourself from the textbook or YouTube. Exams were completely different and it's application of knowledge. There's also little room for error. The final was easier. Seems like a nice guy and really excited about chemistry.
Sean did not lecture much and primarily used POGILs, which is doable with effort. If you've taken AP Chem I would recommend him. If you need more help, I might stay away. He is approachable and nice, but sometimes if you asked a question he wouldn't always answer, directing you to learn it yourself through the POGIL. Exams weren't bad.
Awful, didnt even teach. One of the worst profs ive had at Pitt. Will not even open emails from students, and was very clear about that. Like he says i wont open your emails at the beginning of the semester. Doesnt teach anything, and is incredibly hard to find outside or even inside class.
Chem 0110 is basic chemistry that you learn in highschool. Atomic structure, vsepr, bonding. I thought the class was easy. He puts us in small breakout rm to do class activity worksheet the entire time. (I didnt focused in class at all because literally he goes over the stuff again and again which is why I didnt really studied hard to get an A)
ONLY TAKE IF YOU HAVE TAKEN AP CHEM BEFORE. Lecture not mandatory and useless. Does not lecture, puts you in groups and gives you problems irrelevant to quizzes/tests. Midterms are 10 Qs and 1 wrong is 1 % off of your grade. If you already know the material well, take him bc minimum work, no need to show up to class, but if you don't you will fail
Fun person and explains concepts well one-on-one. However, I don't think he teaches much; most of the content is learned from group classwork. I took AP Chem before, so I wasn't too affected by the lack of lecture. The group work may be excessive but is really helpful. For harder chem courses, I'd probably go for a prof who teaches more.
If you don't already know the chem material from AP Chem, be prepared to teach yourself the material using the textbook and Sean's office hours. Class is POGIL group work rather than lecturing, and Sean is often confusing even when asked to further explain content in his office hours. Exams can be confusing and lack possibility of partial credit.
It was a very tough semester. I hadn't taken chem since 10th grade, but a pretty good student. Literally had to teach ourselves. POGIL group did not help at all. Had quizzes every week. Learned more during recitation than all the lectures combined. Quizzes easy, midterms and final (open ended part) was hard. Only good thing was not being proctored.
Sean cares a lot about his students and is very excited about chemistry. He uses POGIL teaching method and isn't very lecture-based. It more up to students to discuss and figure out themselves. Not my learning style but may work for some.
This class is completely POGIL based. Every class, we were put into breakout rooms and given a worksheet to do with our group. Sean did none of the teaching. The class is an easy A if you have a good background in chem and did AP in high school, but otherwise, get ready to learn everything by yourself.
Sean is a good guy and really cares about students learning, but he just does it wrong. He only teaches with POGILs, which if you've never had a POGIL class it basically means you have to teach yourself then ask questions. Everyone learn new material by doing a worksheet in a small group. Don't take his class but if you have too read before class.
Hes a great person, but I wouldnt recommend him to students that have trouble teaching themselves or have little to no experience in chemistry beforehand. His lectures are mainly just us being put into groups and working on worksheets with TAs. The last maybe 10 mins are lecture material. I stopped showing up because it didnt help me.
He used the POGIL methods for his classes, making lectures absolutely useless. He did not teach at all and offers no partial credit on exams. He also does not respond to emails. The class is an easy A if you're good at chem or have prior experience with it, but it will be very difficult if not. YouTube ended up teaching me everything for exams.
Lectures are useless--you're just grouped with students and trying to figure out problems he's not going to teach you to do. If you spend time doing practice and learning on your own, exams will be fine. Overall a very nice guy, just not a great professor.
Sean was a great teacher but I think what really made me give him a lower rating is the way the Gen Chem 1 is set up. We do these things called POGIL, in which you group and you work through a worksheet covering the material for the day. While it is not a bad system, I would rather prefer an actual lecture. His tests are fair, allowing retakes.
I do not recommend taking Sean at all. He does not lecture in class and we did worksheets every period to learn the new information. He gives 4 point weekly quizzes that are very hard to understand. Nice and caring man, but makes learning Chemistry hard.
His class is hell. He does not lecture at all and makes you learn by POGIL worksheets which do not explain the concepts of chem. His weekly quizzes are nothing like the class material, and the homework is about apply information that is not taught in class. He is not helpful in office hours and when you have a question he says "ask your peers." NO
He doesn't have lectures and only uses the POGIL technique. You are supposed to work through these with a group, but its very difficult if no one knows what's going on and if your group stops showing up to classes. He gives weekly 4 question quizzes which are very confusing and hard to get a decent grade on.
If you love to torture and yeah yourself college level material, then this class is for you. He does not teach, the textbook isnt helpful. You have to pay for like 4 different subscriptions for the class. The homeworks in no way actually aid in my understanding. The quizzes arent terrible because you can retake them but overall DONT TAKE ROE!
He uses the POGIL method so get ready to teach yourself. He cares about his students if you go to office hours and he is very smart, but teaches like we already know everything. Avoid him if you like to have notes or have someone actually teach you. There are no actual tests, just weekly quizzes of 4 questions, Packback, and Achieve assignments.
Here's the course layout: no lectures, only POGILs which give a basic understanding but fail to mention critical details. The only way to get info is by reading the textbook religiously. Grades rely solely on 4-point quizzes which are designed so that most students get 2/4 every week. He wants you to fail. Finals weeks included 4 separate tests
Heres the thing about his CHEM 0110, I relied HEAVILY on my AP chem knowledge from high school. His class consists of Pogils which are basically in class assignments and practice that usually end up making the topic harder to understand in the first place. 4 question weekly tests that are retake-able but are mostly set for you to get a 2/4 on each
Does not lecture. The course is structured through POGIL. POGIL activities do not prepare you for quizzes. The fourth question on the weekly quiz is always difficult and the POGILs do not create a deep enough level of understanding to get the point. Sean relies very heavily on TAs/ UTAs to teach students but they can only do so much. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Professor Garret-Roe structures his lectures in a flipped style, where you basically teach yourself the content outside of class and complete group POGIL assignments during class time. This method did not work for me. Was understanding when personal problems arise and was flexible.
Sean is overall a nice guy and is very accessible. However, he does not teach with lectures at all. Instead, he uses POGIL activities where students are given worksheets that are supposed to take them through the content and make them learn it. You teach yourself. The only reason I knew what was going on during class was because of AP Chem.
You test every recitation in this class and the quizzes are 4 questions with the 4th being practically impossible to get the point for. There is also no real lecture and instead have to teach yourself the material. The grades are curved for example a 63% is a C, however doing well in the course is difficult. The class style is just not ideal.
In general, Sean is a nice, enthusiastic person, but the structure of his Gen Chem 1 class wasn't conducive to my success. Despite performing well in AP Chemistry, I struggled to maintain a B in this class. He uses POGIL, so there were no traditional lectures. Additionally, most of my grade rested upon difficult 4-question assessments.
Do not take him, he doesn't teach and his quizzes aren't even based off the POGILS he uses. The way the class is set up is bound to make students fail. He doesn't respond to emails and makes his TAs go through hell too. I would give him a 0 if I could
If you have taken chem in high school and have a SOLID foundation this is the prof to take. He doesn't teach at all and I only got an A bc I had a good chem foundation from high school. An A is more than an 83 which is extremely easy to get if you know what you're doing but if you are looking to actually learn something then don't take him.
This class was a joke. Even though the grading criteria saved me in the end by not relying much on the final and being able to do retakes for every quiz, the stress of being in the class and not ever knowing what was going on made me dread going everyday. Beware of POGIL
Not an awful option if you don't mind POGIL style learning. Assessments are given weekly, out of 4 points, and most can be retaken more than twice. Near end of semester started to lecture in the first 15 minutes, but in beginning never really lectured at all. Overall solid choice, just have to get used to the way the class is taught.
I was not impressed with Sean's class. If you want to teach yourself chemistry all semester, this is the class for you. Every lecture is being handed a pogil worksheet and trying to figure it out somehow with your partners. It may work for those who are very good/strong in chem. However, there is a big grade curve so it's harder to fail at least.
If you like being lectured do not enroll in this class. He does not teach the material instead just puts you in groups in class to figure it out yourself. The weekly quizzes are only 4 questions and he expects you to get barely get 2 right. Do not take.
Graded off weekly quizzes that are out of 4 points. Averaging a 3 on the quizzes will get you a B+ or A-. The curve is somewhat nice but you still have to do well on your hw and lab and the 4 questions are pretty hard (question 4 is usually a hypothetical that you'll never get right). Class isn't awful and is passable, but there are better options.
DONT DO IT. This class uses the POGIL system and to say the least, its terrible. The system gives you papers you do in class with your "groups" and you have to teach yourself the topics and never truly know if what you determined is correct. There is also a decent amount of assignments each week so reading the book isn't very practical for time.
This class is very doable if you have a good foundation in chemistry. He does throw extra hard questions occasionally and its off-putting, but as long as you're good with chem he's not bad. If you don't have a good base/never taken chem would not recommend tho, especially if you're a freshman.
Bad professor for a general chemistry course. He used the POGIL method which basically means that you tech yourself the material. This class is not worth the stress and frustration. Take another professor!!
Took him on a whim for PChem 2 during my last semester. POGIL format made lectures engaging; you're learning by doing and you don't even realize it until 3/4 of the way into the course. Format emphasizes actually learning the content rather than just regurgitating information for an exam. Super accommodating when i was concussed. Highly recommend
He is a terrible teacher and should not even be called a teacher because he will not teach you anything. He will have you do worksheets all class and make the TAs answer all your questions, and half the time the TAs don't know the answer. He will treat you guys like toddlers and is just a bad teacher. He will make you want to quit school.
He gives you a packet and expects you to learn the topics from this. He never lectures and thinks his bs "POGIL" learning is helping you. Weekly quizzes out of 4 where it is nearly impossible to get 100% on, even the TAs don't know how to help, nor do they agree with what he says. weekly ALEKS homework that takes genuinely 5 hours at least.
He gives you a packet and expects you to learn fthe topics from this. He never lectures and thinks his dumb "POGIL" learning will help you. Weekly quizzes out of 4 that are literally impossible to get 100% on. Even the TAs dont know what theyre helping you with, nor do they agree with what he says. Weekly ALEKS homework that takes genuinely 5 hrs
Sean does not lecture at all. He passes out packets and calls his lazy teaching "teamwork learning" by having us learn by completing the packets with those who sit around you in class. The only reason I received an A was because I took AP chem in high school and already knew the material. If it weren't for that, I literally would have failed.
Even if you understand Gen Chem 1, the weekly quizzes are almost impossible to score a 4/4 on, and they're a big part of your total grade. It's not as much about knowing and learning the concepts taught but learning how to take these specific tests. If you know Chemistry well or have taken AP Chem you will still do bad.
He refuses to lecture and demands that students teach themselves the material. In class, he breaks students into 4 people per group in chevron lecture hall, so 350 people are screaming over one another trying to figure out chem. He hands out a packet at the beginning of the class and expects students to teach themselves via the packet.
If you want to take understand chem in order to take chem 2, do not take this professor. He does the "POGIL" method, which is where you do the work by yourself and he just gives you the answers later. He also gives assigned seats in the lecture like we are not all 18+ years old. Literally doesn't teach. By far the worst professor I have had so far.
dog this aint it. he doesn't lecture, and only does pogils. also his homework is wack. this aleks stuff is a week or so ahead of what we learn, and the quizzes come two weeks after we learn what we do in class. the curve makes u feel better abt urself, but it doesn't mean anything bc u still hate it anyways. i cannot stress enough... stay away!!!
There are no lectures, and the packets you complete as a group do not give you a solid understanding of the material. The weekly quizzes are not straight-forward at all, and it is expected that students get a 2/4. I spent a ton of time learning the material outside of class, and it was still extremely hard for me to succeed. I do not recommend.
This class is extremely difficult and very hard to pass. I have gone to his office hours specifically as well as exhausted every single study resource Pitt offers (Co-Lab, Study Lab, Office Hours, etc) and I could not improve my grade at all. Pogil learning is very confusing and I do not recommend this course unless you already know chemistry.
if you have any other options for professors take them. everything is done through a POGIL system that makes it so difficult to actually retain any of the information. lectures are unneeded group work and he will hover over you for an uncomfortable amount of time just watching and you can hear him breathe. skipping lectures is a better use of time.
There are no tests which is nice, but you have a quiz each week during recitation before your lab. Each quiz is out of four points and it is very unlikely that you will get a 4/4. I took AP Chem during high school which helped me a lot because I did not learn much in this class. If you are not strong in chemistry I would take another professor.
Garret-Roe's class is definitely intimidating but he makes it very hard to fail. There is a lot of homework but once you get into the groove it's not so bad. I don't feel like I learned a lot of chemistry but again it's a hard class to fail so if you just need to pass Gen Chem 1 then take Garret-Roe.
Sean Garrett-Roe is an extremely smart man, but not a great teacher. He uses the POGIL method, which essentially has the student teach themselves the material. There are weekly assessments instead of quizzes, which sounds great until you realize how difficult it is to get a 4/4. But, it is very hard to fail this course.
His lectures are a waste of time because he does not teach and ig he thinks he does. Gives four-question quizzes once a week that the averages are usually 1.17 (each quiz is worth 3.85% of your total grade). The materials we are quizzed on do not correspond to lecture, and if you're lucky your TA might teach during recitation. Complete the ALEKS!!!
No tests. Only quizzes. You have to put in consistent work to get the grade you want but it's not definitely not impossible because there are only 4 questions per quiz, which means less studying per week. Lots of 'ALEKS' homework though. His teaching method is mainly practice based instead of listening based so depends on your learning style.
If you are coming into his class from AP Chem, it is fairly easy to do well. Sean is very kind, but grading/feedback and content for his 4 question quizzes are confusing. POGIL-style learning seems to be fairly ineffective - and I usually benefit from working in groups. He is obviously very passionate about chemistry and teaching.
This entire course was beyond stressful. ALEKS took over 7 hrs each week. UTAs would give me the wrong answer during lecture. POGIL makes no sense, and SGR refuses to teach or help you. Impossible weekly quizzes that are 4 open response questions with no partial credit. I only passed because of colab, study lab, and balcony tutoring. Good luck
This professor uses POGIL where the majority of your grade is made up of weekly quizzes. These are graded by TAs, who all grade differently. The class isn't terribly difficult and he uses a curve, but you definitely need a good background in chemistry to keep up. In class we just do worksheets and he rarely lectures.
He does POGIL and teaches nothing. Incredibly difficult to fail, I averaged a 2 on the quizzes, got a 91 in lab, completed all the ALEKS on time and did the tophat during class and finished with a 71% which averaged to a B in his class. I put in hardly any work and Im satisfied with my grade. I did take AP Chem in highschool which helped also
AVOID IF POSSIBLE. most of your grade is made up of weekly quizzes (only 1 test) that have only 4 questions. But the 4th question is designed for only 1 or 2 people per lab section to get right. the hw is VERY time consuming bc you essentially teach yourself as you do it. lectures were useless. Possible to do well, but requires A LOT of work.
Sean is a nice, smart guy, but man is his class structure dumb. He has you go the "discovery" route where we did POGIL in class before he lectured what we did in maybe 5 min. ALEKS HW was doable but not applicable to quizzes. Aim for a 3/4 on quizzes, but a 4 is near impossible. Class is more doable than people saw tho, it's only quizzes no tests.
If general chemistry 1 is a weed-out course, then professor Garrett-Roe is a gardener. He uses a teaching method referred to as "POGIL" for the course. With POGIL, he gives you a worksheet you have to figure out each class with others, so you basically teach yourself. There is a quiz each week on the material you just taught yourself :). go to TAs.
This extraterrestrial believes in the "POGIL" experience. You basically end up learning absolutely nothing and walk into Chem 2 set for failure. He has a completely made up testing system that makes no sense and it forces him to put a massive curve on the entire class or everyone would be failing. Makes no sense, he is a constant trigger.
Honestly people complain about this class a lot, but it's really easy if you've already been exposed to chem in high school. Your whole grade is entirely based on quizzes, and I really liked that there was no midterm or final. I found this to be one of my easier classes. Only downside is learning with a small group during class. A little stressful
Professor Garrett-Roe as a person is really great. He's obviously passionate about chemistry and is willing to help anyone that is struggling. The only issue with his class is the teaching itself. As others have already said, the POGIL method basically forces you to teach yourself the concept. If he had more lectures, his class would be perfect.
The entire class is done through POGIL, which is basically a worksheet that you have to complete. Even worse, you have to do it with a group of strangers. About half the people attended the lectures. The quizzes are every week (with retakes) end up being worth 55% of your grade, but are almost impossible to get a 4/4 on.
Do everything you can to avoid this professor if you want to actually learn anything in Chemistry 1. He doesn't teach during the lectures, instead he gives you a worksheet to figure out. He seems enthusiastic, but that does not make up for his lack of teaching. Pretty easy to pass the class, but you won't learn anything.
I am doing well in this class and I would still recommend literally anyone but him. Most of the grade is based on 4 question quizzes. The entire "lecture" is just a worksheet (POGIL) that you figure out during class with your learning group. All of the content is put in these paragraphs before the problems which reading in groups is impossible.
Sean is very nice and will do his best to answer your questions. However, I do believe that you need a relatively good chemistry background to do well in his class - taking AP Chem prior to taking this course was a huge help for me. His teaching/testing styles are not great, but there is a huge curve (83% + is counted as an A).
his teaching style is just so bad. he managed to take the most simple concepts of gen chem and teach them in ways that made them complicated when they should not have been. but if you have to take him, you will get a good grade without trying too hard. lectures consisted of completing his (ineffective) workbook and nothing else.
Actually terrible. If it's possible to take a different professor, please do. His lectures consisted of you sitting there working through problems with almost no guidance, there are no tests but the quizzes are difficult to get above a 75%, if that. If you just want to pass chem, I would take him, but if you want to learn anything, avoid!!
As kind as prof. Sean is, I can't say his class is great. He teaches through a workbook with very little lecture. You are just thrown into the material and expected to learn it yourself through his workbook. He doesn't believe in tests so you have weekly 4 question quizzes with a fourth question that is notably impossible to get. ALEKS hw weekly.
Sean genuinely cares about his students and is extremely passionate. However, his charisma doesn't translate into his teaching style. POGIL and ALEKs were counterintuitive to my prior extensive knowledge of chemistry and were a waste of time inside and outside of lecture. Quizzes were fair, but heavily weighted and almost impossible to get a 4/4.
Sean is a really nice and sweet person.what I wish I knew before taking him as a professor: 1, he does NOT lecture. He uses a workbook that you basically teach yourself through pretty unusual problems. If you like to attend lecture and take notes, he is not the professor for you. 2, small quizzes each week that are impossible to get
Grade is almost entirely made up of 4 question quizzes where the class averages a 1. There is an insane curve so it's easy to pass the class, however it's difficult to actually learn and do well. The TA's provided little to no help. The majority of students sit in class doing nothing because he assigns questions without teaching any material first.
HE DOES NOT TEACH. All you do is do questions in a workbook and then do aleks. The work never lines up with recitation. Also the lecture does not line you up with homework. Then you have to learn a whole lecture by yourself because the only thing he explains is the workbook questions
Sean Garrett-Roe is a nice person, but you will learn absolutely nothing from his class. He uses POGIL to teach, which is basically some sort of teaching pyramid scheme. He makes money off of every student who buys the POGIL book, which is the workbook you will use all semester to teach yourself. But his class is easy to pass if you do the work.
Sean Garrett Hoe is THE worst professor ever. This creature doesn't teach you anything and your whole grade is based on weekly quizzes that are out of 4. He teaches in "pogil", whatever that even means, but he just makes easy things so complicated so you will know nothing. Every time I hiked up to Chevron a tear came down my face.
The professor doesn't teach the material like it's new, so If you're unfamiliar with Chemistry, you might have a hard time. If you've taken AP chem, this class should be easy. Your grade is based on your homework, quizzes, lab, and tophat participation.
Sean Garrett-Roe is awful!!! Lectures are boring and he uses the POGIL method. You spend class doing textbook problems in the book he authored so he makes money from us. Your grade is based on the weekly quizzes and the average is 1/4. Lots of ALEKS homework that doesn't line up with classwork. Recitations aren't helpful. Class was a waste of time.
flipped classroom using pogils and aleks. in his recs, there were weekly assessments with odd questions that basically made up your whole grade since he didnt really assign anything else. didnt teach at ALL, so i had nothing to study with and didnt know what to expect on the assessments which was the most difficult part. super enthusiastic though!
He kinda just doesn't teach. You sit there in your assigned groups talking to your peers about what the questions could possibly mean because there's not much to go on in the book. It's 10-15 minute sections of working on the confusing work book broken up by five minute lectures. Make sure you can be self-reliant before taking his GenChem 1 class.
Avoid this class unless you enjoy teaching yourself the content. He seems very passionate about chem, but would barely explain topics and would instead just have us work in groups during lecture. Was confused all semester
Do NOT take this professor. His lectures don't even correspond to the weekly quizzes you take (which make up most of your grade). You also have to do Aleks and he's not lenient about it at all. If you're not coming in with prior chem experience then ... good luck.
Honestly not the hard but Sean is weird and cannot teach.
Sean is a great, caring professor. He genuinely cares about his students and their success in his course. He offers out of class study sessions where he takes the time to answer questions and form deeper relationships with his students. He does use the POGIL approach during his lectures, but I found it very effective as long as I attended lecture.
Sean used POGIL and Aleks, so lecture time consisted of working in small groups to learn the material on your own, then complete hours of online homework. It was not ideal, and because I didn't go in with prior chemistry knowledge, I failed. Would NOT recommend.
DO NOT TAKE AT ALL COST. He does not teach in class and makes students do pogil in class, which is basically just teaching yourself the material. He acted like he cared about his students, but did not really care to take the time to teach the material. There were weekly quizzes, which did not reflect content from class and were difficult.
Don't take him or Tricia. Lectures consist of doing questions from a workbook you have to buy. He doesn't teach, you basically have to teach yourself. No tests, but each week there's a 4-question quiz; the last question is meant to be very hard. He has a very high curve, so it's easy to pass, but you don't learn anything. Our TAs weren't helpful.
this man is so evil. hate him n his ponytail. i took this last semester and his pogil method set me up for failure. idk anything from chem 1. did not teach. recitation quizzes were EVIL and mean and were the reason my grade was bad. evil evil man. he is nice outside of class but puts the evil in devil inside of class. juicy curve tho (he needed it)
I barely learned anything in this class. The POGIL style is not ideal at all, and I struggled along with my group. A lot of what you learn in lecture was not aligned with the recitation quizzes which is what count towards your grade. It didn't make a lot of sense to me. He's very nice, but I wouldn't do this course again.
Genuinely worst professor I have ever had.
Sean's class was a mixed bag - the POGIL method meant we had to teach ourselves, but the high curve made it passable. unstuck study was a big help for test prep. Attend lectures, do the Aleks work, and you'll get by, but don't expect a lot of handholding.
SGR is not liked by many but I don't see any issue with him. Even in lectures more than 150 students he knows each one by name and cares about his students. Quizzes are made up every unit with a great chance to improve your grade. Attendance is mandatory but he curves it at the end of the semester. If you do the work in class you will be fine
appears to come off nice yet he fails to give the resources for success. He says pogil method is the best way to learn, but any educator should know that you cannot generalize one teaching style to every student. You teach yourself everything. This class hinder with my confidence and gave me great anxiety. can't wait to not see him ever again.
hate hate HATED his class. "flipped learning classroom" he uses that as an excuse to not teach a single thing. no notes or lecture slides are provided you are given nothing to study for the exams and quizzes. he praises his teaching style but it sets you up for failure
Very sweet and genuine professor but learned nothing. Makes you buy a book he wrote and teach yourself with it. Homework and in class (work book) not helpful for the quizzes. Very easy to pass this class, but even more hard to get an A. Expect a B- to a B+ when taking this class. Im scared to take Chem 2 as I feel unprepared.
He uses a "POGIL" style teaching method which almost everyone, including myself, hated. The entire course is essentially you teaching yourself. There are no exams other than the final, and the lengthy homework will NOT prepare you for the quizzes. I would not have passed without the amazing TAs working overtime to teach us in recitation/lab.
SGR was a good person, not a great prof. You have mandatory ALEKS that must be completed every week and POGIL which we practically teach ourselves. You can't miss a class because you lose points every time you miss, and he does not accept doctor's notes. He is a nice person, and nicer than some I've heard. I do not feel very prepared for Chem 2.
I love SGR! Pogil style learning is a little difficult to get used to at first. Class consists of workbook problems. He is super friendly and has a study session after class that is extremely helpful. Quizzes every week but you get the chance to retake them a month later and then at the very end for the final. ALEKS sucks tho.
I only did good in this class because majority of the grade was based off 4 question weekly quizzes that you can retake up to 2 times. Doesn't lecture and uses pogil workbook, which can be difficult since you're basically teaching yourself. However he posts all his slides so you can get the answers, and is very patient when you ask questions.
I went to lectures and barely did the work because POGIL made no sense to me. I would spend HOURS at study lab, hillman tutoring, co-lab. The UTA's helped me pass not SGR and the TA's Go to lecture because attendance influences your grade. This class made me depressed. He also is low key fake. Good luck with chem 2 if you take him.
Makes you buy a book he wrote to do the stupidest practice problems that really don't apply to actual chem material. Weekly 4 question quizzes and he brags about how less than 1% of people get a 4/4. You probably won't fail but it's annoying to do so poorly so early in college.
By week 2 I was hoping that the fire alarm would somehow go off in the middle of classso we could leave early. POGIL method is ineffective if you don't have prior knowledge about chemistry.went to class for the attendance points and just sat and did nothing. Then I would spend hours with the TA's, UTA's, study lab, co-lab. to learn the material.
Uses POGIL, so you love it or hate it. Personally loved it, kept lectures engaging. Super approachable outside class and offers study sessions to get homework and assessment help. No exams, weekly assessments that are 2 questions and you can retake 2 times (keep best score). Hard material but with retakes on everything makes it easier to do well.
He is by far the worst chem professor. Every class consists of doing questions strsight from a work book that he wrote. Unhelpful, disorganized, and lectures were different than the recitation quizzes. The ALEKS homework was also unhelpful as it forced people to rush through it instead of actually learning the concepts. Dont take him!
People seem to not like his teaching style, but I actually really enjoyed the interactive lectures. He also holds study session right after class twice a week and those were super helpful. Highly recommend if you don't like being talked at. There is a textbook, but you really don't have to read it.
I know that this class is hard, but the POGIL method takes away the stress of exams, and gives you multiple chances to prove yourself. You will have to teach yourself everything, but he is a nice guy. I would say it is hard to get an A but it is the easiest teacher to pass with/ get a B.
Everyone hates on him but honestly a lot of people would do better in his class if they just put in the effort to do their homework consistently and study. It's not ideal to have to teach yourself everything to some extent, but I personally thought the POGIL method allowed me to gradually increase my understanding. Plus he doesn't believe in exams.
DONT TAKE HIM!!! He never finishes a lecture and the textbook does not help at all. The lectures are very rushed and he basically makes you learn every topic on your own. He also tries to be funny and it never works.
Lecture heavy and everything comes from the book he wrote for the course, but he doesn't believe in exams, so a lot of your grade is determine by 4 question test in recitation and 2 easy finals. Lectures are easy if you show up and follow along, but be sure to do the homework and review the textbook.
The class is POGIL-style, which consists of active learning via a workbook without true lecture. Personally, I dont learn that way and my disdain towards chemistry itself does not help. However, Sean genuinely cares about his students. I notice him addressing them by name, which is insanely impressive considering my lecture hall has over 250 kids.
SGR is very nice, and a great guy that I think would be a great professor if the course style wasn't so awful. You do all work in class through a workbook, and there are only weekly recitation quizzes for exams. They are awful and teach you nothing. I feel unprepared for Chem 2, at this point I'm dying for an exam.
Very sweet guy, but if you are not common sense smart in chemistry this is NOT a good class to take. We learn a new topic everyday in the textbook he created. I went to tutoring once and my tutor said this is the fastest paced gen chem class you could take. You can pass, but don't expect a good grade.
Contrary to popular opinion, I loved SGR. If you are an independent learner, this is a great class for you. He gives a general idea of topics, then you expand on your own. I hated the weekly quizzes and would've rather had exams, but all in all I enjoyed his class. Super sweet guy too, cares about his students a lot.
Be prepared to do a lot of self-taught learning. Contrary to many others' beliefs, I really like the class's design and feel it helped me do better. Class time consists of workbook questions in a textbook you need to purchase. There are weekly recitation quizzes with a guarantee of a 60 if you attempt the first three problems.
The fact that very few people can get 100% on the quizzes is an absolute joke. You are supposed to test on things that were taught, not completely different questions that require a different train of thought. It's an outrage that my future is determined by this and I seriously question the fact that I am paying for this. Save yourself the trouble.
So bad, do not take. Left class knowing less chemistry than going into the class. HORRIBLE
As a person and professor, SGR is great. But for the structure of his class, DO NOT take this. The lectures are easy but don't at all prepare you for the weekly assessments. You have a lot of homework, the homework isn't helpful towards the assessments either. I've never gotten below an A in a class, but I'm in danger of this being my first time.
SGR is a cool guy who seems passionate about his work. However, your grade is mainly weekly assessments that are four questions long with no partial credit or MCQ. It is really tough to get an A in this class because of how odd the questions on his quizzes are. Also, there are no notes for this class, so it is a teach-it-yourself type deal.
Essentially self-taught. You must buy a POGIL book for every activity. Minimal notes (often just answers). Weekly recitation quizzes on set standards, retaken once and again on the final. No traditional tests/ exams. He designs the quizzes to challenge students with strong chem backgrounds, do not take if you don't have a good background.
might be the worst chem professor oat. Him and Shepherd use Aleks and POGIL. Aleks is the most bs thing I've ever done in my entire life. He does not teach jack. If you want a good grade you gotta teach urself chem1. If you are taking chem, never take him or Shepard. And also the school should fire the whole chemistry department.
SGR is a very nice guy, but his teaching ethic is not desirable especially if you are trying to learn the material. If you are a very independent learner than this is the professor for you. His lectures consist of doing workbook pages and putting up the answers for a split second. He also uses ALEKS which DO NOT help!
No big exams, class graded by weekly quizzes that have retakes. Very helpful office hrs that aren't packed. POGIL takes a bit to get used to but overall good prof
I don't think the reviews are fair at all to SGR. He's incredibly friendly, cares deeply about his students, and was encouraging. I didn't mind POGIL at all, although some people aren't the biggest fans of it. His class is based around the idea that he gives you some brief instructions, and then you work through problems on your own.
Honestly, SGR is super friendly and an easy grader, but beware if you don't have a good background with chemistry. His lectures are super learn it yourself and he never really teaches, weekly rec. quizzes that you will never get 100% no matter how hard you study. He is however super easy to talk to if you have questions and is super flexible w ext.
Might be the worst prof at Pitt. Everyone keeps saying he's caring, but all I see is a guy who couldn't care less about anyone's future. Got an A cuz I grinded, could've gone to 0 lectures and still ended up with the same grade. Horrible lecturer, POGIL ineffective, ignores emails at times. Do surveys for EC, quizzes are not hard, but dont take him
SGR is a very nice person, this entire class is based on POGIL, which involved oneself and a group of 3 other people. Beware of this class if you hate group work. SGRs quizzes each week were near impossible to pass or fail. I found this class frustrating because you can't really do bad, but you also can't do great. You're stuck at this "ok" range.
